INTERVIEW

with Richard Hawley

Despite his Northern roots, actor Richard Hawley has been a long-time resident of Brighton. Currently walking the cobbles of Coronation Street as Johnny Connor, Lisa de Silva talked to Richard about living on the south coast and his work, both in Corrie and as a supporter of the Alzheimer’s Society

A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE

“M

ost of my early years were spent in the North. I was born in Yorkshire, was a student in Liverpool and then part of a theatre company in Leeds,” Richard told me. “Back then in the mid-70s and early 80s, Leeds was struggling with the effects of the miners’ strikes, there was a lot of economic deprivation and the atmosphere was highly politicised. As a theatre company, we were making art that was very connected to that.” As the group became more successful, touring became a way of life and gradually Richard was spending more and more time rehearsing in London. So, when his girlfriend Heather (now his wife of over 30 years) got a job as a teacher down in Brighton, Richard decided to move south to join her. “Basically, I moved down to Brighton in 1984 and I’ve been here ever since,” he laughed. “For the first four years, the demands of touring meant I spent little time there, but once I got involved in mainstream acting and had my children, it really began to feel like home. At the time, Brighton’s huge sense of fun provided a completely different vibe to the North and gradually, I fell in love with the place.”

It was then that I decided to learn about it properly and to do all I could to raise awareness and support those coping with the impact of dementia Having appeared in shows as diverse as Family Affairs and Prime Suspect, Richard achieved a lifelong ambition in 2015, when he landed the part of Johnny Connor in Coronation Street. With shooting in Manchester, he now enjoys spending time in two extraordinary cities, enjoying the best of both worlds. “Corrie’s a lovely show to work on. Everyone’s very funny, very direct and there’s a lot of straight-talking Northern humour. Part of me has always felt like a traitor for leaving the North, but the cast and crew are part of a deep-rooted old company and are incredibly welcoming.” Richard has also appreciated being involved in several major storylines, such as the suicide of his son, a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and more recently, coping with Charles Bonnet syndrome. For those unaware of Charles Bonnet syndrome, it is a condition that often starts with reduced eyesight, which then leads the brain to compensate by creating visions 10 SUSSEX LIVING | May 2021

in the form of hallucinations. Those experiencing the symptoms can confuse what’s happening with mental health issues and Richard is proud to be helping raise awareness of the syndrome. “I get to connect with research on these issues and conditions, as well as work with some amazing charities. It’s been great to represent those suffering with Charles Bonnet syndrome. Being able to tell peoples’ stories helps to balance out all the nonsense of being a celebrity,” he explained. Another disease which has had a huge and heartfelt impact on Richard, is Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia. The disease triggers a loss of brain function and symptoms include memory loss, confusion and difficulties with speech and understanding. Sadly, Richard’s father lived with Alzheimer’s for a decade before passing away in 2004, but the effect of the disease on his family has had a profound and lasting influence on Richard. “Living with Alzheimer’s is hard on families on a practical, financial and emotional level. My dad was very fortunate because he had both my mum and my sister around to support him - that was also a great comfort to me. Living and working so far away, I could only pop up to see him several times a year and was deeply grateful for help from the Alzheimer’s Society and their volunteers, who would come in to read to dad to give my mum and sister some respite.” After his dad passed, Richard initially started to help out at dementia cafes, as he remembered how embarrassing it could be for his mum to take his dad out to an ordinary café. This experience helped him to appreciate the comfort and understanding that comes from being part of a community with a shared experience of dementia. Then, when taking part in a Memory Walk organised by the Alzheimer’s Society along Brighton seafront, Richard met a family just like his own, struggling to deal with their father’s dementia. It was a significant moment for him. “Talking to them, made me realise how little equipped I’d been to speak to my dad or to know how to deal with him during his illness. It was then that I decided to learn about it properly and to do all I could to raise awareness and support those coping with the impact of dementia.” Today, Richard is a committed supporter of the Alzheimer’s Society and is currently supporting Dementia Action Week. He is passionate about government funding for both research into the disease and the development of a high-quality social care support system which is free at the point of use,

in the same way that education and the NHS are. His advice to families living with dementia is to try to value the time spent with a loved one. “I lost my dad to Alzheimer’s, but I worked hard during the time I had with him to treasure everything about him and our time together. Now I have some amazing memories of our tender moments, confusing moments, big moments, which live within me in a very positive way. It’s like a kaleidoscopic swirl of memories and experiences which give me a deep connection to him, both comforting and joyful.” Having grown up walking the Yorkshire Moors, listening to his father talking about all the places they visited, last year Richard took his Memory Walk alone up on Ilkley Moor. “My dad was a great storyteller and he’d tell me the

history of all the places we visited. It was like we dwelt in the soul of the place together and walking back up there, his presence was still by my side.” Living in Sussex, Richard continues to enjoy countryside walks with his dogs, enjoying the panoramic views up on Ditchling and Firle Beacons. Yet, he confides that his favourite place to walk is along Brighton seafront. Not only was it the location of that first significant Memory Walk, but years ago after the birth of his twin girls, he walked down from the hospital to the seafront, along the prom and out onto the pier. Looking back over Brighton as a new father, he experienced a special moment of pure unadulterated love. “Brighton is home. I love living here and it’s where I plan to grow old disgracefully!” l

IT’S A MATCH! A new platform piloted in West Sussex could revolutionise the way that home care is delivered. Hanna Prince finds out more about CareMatch

W

hen you find yourself in need of home care, it can often happen suddenly. That’s why CareMatch, an innovative new platform that connects clients directly with local carers, is such an effective idea. CareMatch is the

brainchild of Anne Marie Perry, the owner-manager of home care services agency Abicare. It’s based on a deep understanding of the problems facing more traditional care models – not just the lack of guidance and signposting for those who find themselves urgently in need of home care, but also the difficulty of coordinating teams of carers, pay rates that fail to reflect responsibility levels, and high staff turnover within the industry. “With CareMatch, we want to change the world of care,” explains Anne Marie Perry. “My aim was to create teams of hyper-local carers so you’ll always be able to find a carer if you need one. I also wanted to pay carers more without increasing rates for customers and move away from the ‘time and task’ model to offer a person-

centred service that can really deliver outcomes.” The platform assigns ‘care hubs’ to individual clients. Each hub includes carers engaged to work for that client, as well as family members and others with an interest in their care. There are some significant advantages to this approach – not only can flexible rotas be negotiated without going through an intermediary, but families are kept closely informed and the community-based concept means that carers will have local knowledge that can benefit their clients. Cutting out coordinating costs also results in carers being paid more – although each community has a clinical lead to offer support and help

Underlying Care Match is a strong appreciation of both clients’ and carers’ needs

with any issues. Underlying CareMatch is a strong appreciation of both clients’ and carers’ needs - insights drawn from Abicare’s long experience of domiciliary care provision. Abicare has been offering home care services for more than 30 years. The company expanded its community support offering during the

coronavirus crisis, easing the pressure on hospitals by delivering five ‘care hotels’. “We understand that if you’re a care provider then you need to engage and we’re constantly thinking about what we can be doing to make it a better care world,” says Anne Marie. CareMatch is a continuation of that pioneering philosophy. The platform has been piloted successfully in West Sussex since late 2019 and launched nationwide in April. While local authorities can’t currently contract through CareMatch, it’s possible to use a personal budget granted by your local authority to fund care through the service. l CareMatch Limited Visit www.carematch.ltd to find out more and sign up.

Had enough of being overweight? No matter how hard you have tried in the past, The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme could be the answer to losing your weight and keeping it off once and for all.

Rachel Ricketts, Weight Loss Consultant

It

can be extremely frustrating when you just can’t seem to lose excess weight, no matter what you do. If you have reached the stage where putting on any more weight is simply not an option for you, then read on!

Improving your health and welbeing Being overweight is no laughing matter when the physical strain on your body is starting to take its toll on your health. Your GP or your family may have expressed their concern and urged you to slim down – all very well if only you knew how to! Help is at hand to resolve your weight problem. Rachel and her team have helped over 8,000 clients of all ages and from all walks of life to slim down successfully. Many come to see her as a last resort and are delighted to have achieved, and successfully maintained, the weight they want to be.

As the weight falls off, time after time clients remark how well they feel, how much fitter they are and how their energy levels have increased. Typical health improvements include blood pressure, cholesterol, fitness, blood sugar levels, mental alertness, skin conditions and even fertility.

With an expected average weight loss of 7-14lb a month for clients and hundreds of hand written testimonials, Rachel’s results speak for themselves.

A workable programme that’s easy to follow The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme is a straight forward and workable four-stage eating plan: the first two stages deal with weight loss, while the last two stages deal with weight maintenance. This highly successful tried and tested programme is easy to stick to and more importantly, it works. The expected average weight loss of clients is 7-14lb a month. As you can imagine, clients are more than happy with this motivating weight loss, especially for those who have struggled with their weight for so long.

Clients often comment on just how impressed their doctors or consultants are with their weight loss and health improvements. “My doctor is very happy - I’ve been able to come off blood pressure and cholesterol medication.” Another client’s doctor said, ‘All my lady patients on thyroid medication are struggling to lose weight, but you’ve lost 2 ½ stone despite being on thyroxin –well done!’

One-to-one support

Consultations are available every 7-10 days with email support as needed. Clients welcome the very personalised support provided. Time and again, clients comment that they couldn’t have lost the weight without the support and encouragement of Rachel and her team.

For those who are not able to visit, a very successful remote support service is provided throughout the UK and overseas. Distance is no object!

Full speed ahead for Woods Travel as popular travel firm celebrates 50th Anniversary

T

he award-winning West Sussex travel firm has proved its resilience to emerge from the pandemic in excellent shape and with a renewed determination to satisfy the demand from clients keen to embrace new freedoms afforded by the easing of lockdown restrictions. And Tina, who runs the company with joint managing director Kristy Elsmere and sales director Alison Waterfield-Jones, say it’s brilliant to be back in business after the enforced shutdown. The relaunch of the coach holidays programme comes as Woods Travel commemorates half a century on the road. Founder Roger Elsmere, along with late friend Bill Wood, set the wheels in motion back in 1971. From those humble beginnings, the company has grown year on year and is now known for complete travel solutions including a travel agency as well as the coach holidays with their pioneering door-to-door service. Over the years Woods Travel has become known and loved for arranging relaxing trips to see sites throughout the UK and the continent. Now, with the popularity of staycations due to the continued restrictions on foreign travel, phones are already busy at the Bognor Regis-based company’s Park Road HQ. Tina explains: “It has definitely been a challenging year or so because of coronavirus but we have always had a robust business model in place and that has helped us navigate through these trying times. We have certainly proved the business is resilient and now we are delighted to be

Tina Shaw-Morton and the team at Woods Travel are busy putting the finishing touches to a double celebration as the business prepares to mark its 50th anniversary AND looks to re-start its everpopular coach holidays able to get back to what we do best. Our fantastic staff have been complete stars, working tirelessly to process refunds and move customers’ money to new dates. The drivers have also been fantastic, doing whatever was required of them at the drop of a hat”. “We have been meticulous in following government guidelines regarding safety measures and we’re constantly monitoring developments and this means we can ensure our customers’ welfare is always at the forefront”. “Customers should be assured that we have been awarded the ‘Good to Go’ status by Visit England for having a Covid-19 Risk Assessment in place as well as processes to maintain

cleanliness and support social distancing measures. “Celebrating our 50th birthday gives us a chance to reflect on many years of

putting smiles on faces and it goes without saying that in this respect we owe so much to Roger, now retired, for his years of devotion to the business.” Now the focus is fixed firmly on the future. Tina added: “From what we are being told, people are so, so eager to get away and enjoy a break after the confining nature of the lockdowns and, of course, we can help with that with some amazing trips available. “There is a boom in staycations and later in the summer we hope to be able to once again be full throttle ahead regards continental bookings but this will obviously be determined by how we continue to cope with coming out of the pandemic”.

“With all this in mind, we have produced a stunning brochure – available now – detailing exactly what’s on offer. Our coach holidays will recommence from Monday 17th May 2021, in line with Government guidance. We very much look forward to hearing from everyone.” To request a brochure, call 01243 871666 Information and bookings: 01243 868080 For more details or to view our brochures online visit woodstravel.co.uk/brochures

Super Sussex Adele Trathan anticipates the further easing of restrictions, the return to something closer to normal life, and a call to action this summer

S

pring is here and summer is on the horizon, after so many months of lockdown it is time to dust off the cobwebs and finally get out and about again hurrah! Although it’s still important to observe current restrictions, we are finally able to enjoy our beautiful county again so let’s make the most of it. We are extremely privileged to have the countryside and coast right on our doorstep, with plenty of space to roam and enjoy our natural surroundings. Blue skies create the perfect opportunity to pack up a picnic and set off for a family trek. Climb the South Downs, take in the

vistas, watch the wildlife and inhale the fresh air. Alternatively, head to the coast, and stroll along the promenade of one of our wonderful seaside towns or cities or follow a rugged coastal path; Sussex has so many different coastal opportunities. Inland, forests, woodlands, lakes and riverside walks are all in abundance. Each offering their own compelling space that allow the senses to thrive and blossom in these wonderfully varied environments. For history lovers there are many historic towns to explore, narrow cobbled

streets and beautiful buildings that have stood for centuries. They evoke the senses, enticing discoveries about places and times gone

by. Strolling back in time and learning about our surroundings, the people and places, help connect our lives with the past and create a

sense of belonging. Local attractions are slowly opening-up, finally offering the chance to visit places that perhaps, we once took for granted. A day out with the kids provides an opportunity for education, engagement, entertainment and most of all a fun-filled family day out.

Pubs, restaurants and tea-rooms have found new ways to ensure customers can indulge safely, to go out, socialise and enjoy the pleasure of being served tasty food and drink. It’s an opportunity to appreciate the local fayre and produce and help support the local hospitality industry. The

chance to spend time with friends and family has become precious, and a priority. Our high streets have suffered enormously during lockdown. The pavements of towns and villages across our county have emptied and become still. Shops, retailers and businesses need

customers and if we value a thriving local community and economy then it’s time to show our support. Sussex has so much to offer in every aspect, so now more than ever, this is the opportunity to show our appreciation, while still observing safety guidelines. Why not give some support to the retailers, entertainers, attractions, hospitality industry and businesses across the county and help us all recover from this tough last year? l

Brighton Festival returns with arts outdoors, online and safely back on stage this May!

B

righton Festival returns from 1 May with acclaimed British and Ethiopian poet, playwright, and broadcaster, Lemn Sissay MBE as guest director. The annual celebration of classical and contemporary music, theatre, visual arts, literature, comedy and family events will take place online, outdoors and as guidance allows from 17 May, in socially distanced venues across the city. Artist Ray Lee brings the world premiere of Points of Departure, a spectacular series of mechanical sculptures that will light up the night-time backdrop of Shoreham Port. The large-scale structures sing out a sci-fi symphony that will mesmerise visitors as they walk around the outdoor installation. Families and friends will be celebrated in Arrivals & Departures, an interactive artwork by Yara & Davina located in Royal Pavilion Gardens. Births and deaths are commemorated on two digital billboards and the

public can nominate a loved one to be included. Immersive sound installation Pier to Pier combines interviews with 14 people who live and work on the coast with music from a coastal choir, played from a bench as it travels the Sussex coast from Brighton to Worthing. HERstory, an insightful and inspiring collaboration between writers, storytellers and performers, uncovers the real stories of Brighton-based women.

egend has it that cricket began in Sussex and that Arundel, formed in 1704 is the oldest club in the county. Sussex County Cricket Club, formed in 1839, is the oldest of all the county sides. It took them until 2003 to win the county championship. They won it again in 2006 and 2007. At the foot of the South Downs in the village of Hurstpierpoint, the cricket club has been batting and bowling since 1717. With the 2021 season underway, this progressive and inclusive club is noted for a family focused, welcoming nature at its Fairfield Recreation Ground home. In recent years, 2-lane cricket nets have been installed and a stateof-the-art bowling machine has been obtained. For 2021, 2 roll-on cages have been purchased for training sessions on the practice wicket. The evolution generated at the club during the last decade is remarkable. A solitary men’s team has become 200 members across 6 adult sides for men and women, plus junior teams ranging from the U9’s to U16’s. Once a male domain, cricket is now a sport for all.

It’s that time of year when clinking spoons start stirring tea in china cups whilst knives slice through scrumptious fresh cake. It’s that time of year when the crack of leather on willow begins again in earnest as Robert Veitch reports Like teams across the land, Hurstpierpoint struggled through 2020. Being community minded, the club has chosen to forego the normal £40 fee to sponsor the match day ball this season, preferring to offer the opportunity free of charge to businesses within the parish boundaries. It’s a small but generous gesture to help local businesses get back on their feet this year.

Cricket creates camaraderie that bonds players in all teams Club President Dave Parsons has been through the ritual of strapping on his pads and walking out to the middle, willow in hand, to represent the club since July 12th 1970, when he scored 75 in his debut against Guildford

Referees. 25,012 runs and 1,331 wickets later he has staked a claim as a genuine all-rounder, something referred to not so long ago on Test Match Special, with former England Captain Michael Vaughan commenting, ‘Dave’s best years are ahead of him!’ Hurspierpoint’s pavilion has been around almost as long as Dave Parsons, though in contrast its’ condition has markedly improved over the years. One upside of Covid-19 has been the chance to give the pavilion a facelift and new lease of life. There’s a nod to club history with honours boards and nostalgic photos. The biggest cricketing scandal of 2020 took place at the AGM of the Sussex Cricket League when the AGM voted to end the necessity for teams to provide tea. An institution that had survived for centuries was smashed

out of the ground. Hurstpierpoint were on the side of the ‘Tea-mainers’ but accepted the ‘Tea-vers’ had won the day… or so they thought. Voting irregularities were identified in the first vote, so a second ballot was held. This time, a strong majority decided to maintain the institution, so the ‘Tea-mainers’ prevailed. The competitiveness to provide an excellent feast serves to motivate players and spectators alike

Hurstpierpoint were on the side of the ‘Tea-mainers’

and Hurstpierpoint are delighted the celebrated ‘Battenberg Buffet’ can continue! With so many teams, members and opportunities to get involved, regardless of cricketing ability; Hurstpierpoint like many other clubs is welcoming new members into the ranks. In the years to come you could also be mentioned in dispatches on Test Match Special. Since 2018 the Sussex Cricket League has been the largest on the planet with 335 teams spread across 34 divisions, catering for all levels of ability. From West Wittering to Wisborough Green, Ifield, Horsted Keynes, Cowden, Wadhurst, Iden, Pett, East Dean and Friston, Rottingdean, Clymping, Selsey and all wickets in-between there are teams that need new blood. Cricket creates camaraderie that bonds players in all teams across the land. In addition there is the social side of afternoon tea, preceding an isotonic beer to help recover once the match is over.

So rather than living in what Sir Geoffrey Boycott calls ‘the corridor of uncertainty’ why not get down to your local club and discover if you’re the next Freddie Flintoff, James Kirtley, Ben Brown, Jofra Archer, or better still, Holly Colvin. SPORT

Feeling positive about the upcoming summer? Searching for a new challenge? Why not take a hint from Hanna Prince and take up a new sport. Here’s four to choose from

Croquet Sociable, challenging and great fun for all ages, croquet is more than just a casual garden sport. Here’s how to get involved Croquet has been an English country garden staple since the 1900s. Its origins are shrouded in mystery – one theory is that the game was imported from Ireland in the 1850s, but it’s more likely to be based on the French sport paille-maille. Charles II was such a fan of this ball-and-mallet game that he appropriated a walk in St James’s Park where he could play it with his courtiers

Hockey If you’re looking for a fast-paced sport that boosts fitness and is suitable for the whole family, hockey might just be for you Hockey is famous for its inclusiveness – not only is it the country’s most genderequal sport, it’s also common to have several generations of the same family playing on the same team. The game enjoyed a resurgence after Team GB women won Gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics, with 10,000 people signing up to their local hockey club after being inspired. There are several different variations, but field hockey is generally played by an 11-a-side team with the aim being to score a goal in the other team’s net. Ice hockey – most popular in North America and northern

- the area now called Pall Mall. Today, croquet is governed by the National Croquet Association (www. croquet.org.uk). There are many versions of the game, but it’s generally based around six hoops and four balls. The object is to hit your balls around a croquet lawn using a mallet, scoring points as you move through the hoops.

a-go sessions and free coaching on 11 international tournament lawns across a five-acre site. All ages, genders and abilities are welcome. Visit www.sussexcountycroquetclub.org.uk to find out more

WHERE TO PLAY There are plenty of places to try your hand at croquet in Sussex. Linda Gavigan of Sussex County Croquet Club told me, “Croquet is a challenging yet sociable sport, which is experiencing a revival as people look for Covid-19 safe activities in the open air.” Sussex Croquet County Club is based in Southwick. Linda added, “It’s the leading club in the South East and has experienced a 26% increase in members in the past year. We offer free have-

Europe – sees two teams attempt to hit a ‘puck’ across an ice rink, while street hockey is similar but played on asphalt rather than ice. England Hockey (www.englandhockey.co.uk), field hockey’s governing body, is a good place to start if you want to get involved. WHERE TO PLAY Sussex boasts one of the country’s most successful hockey clubs. East Grinstead

Hockey Club (EGHC) was founded in 1897 and has produced several international stars. “EGHC is a family hockey club offering training and matches from complete beginners to Premier League standard,” said ladies Club Captain Lottie Gregory-Young. “Our coaches are some of the best in the country and it’s easy for beginners or experienced players to get involved. We are running sessions over the summer, so please email info@eghockey.co.uk for more information and to arrange a free trial”

Bowls This historic sport is played in dozens of villages and towns across Sussex. Joining your local club is a great way for all ages to get active outdoors It might look serenely relaxing, but bowls is a tactical and highly competitive game that unites people of different ages, genders and fitness levels. It’s one of the world’s most historic sports. A form of the game is thought to have been enjoyed since prehistoric times, and bowls in its modern format has been played in England since the 12th century – possibly even earlier. Most clubs welcome complete beginners. You can track down your local bowling green through Bowls England

Tennis

Looking for a fun way to boost your fitness? Tennis is a winning combination of aerobic activity and competitive thrill – and it couldn’t be easier for beginners to gain racket skills

Think tennis and your mind probably jumps to the hushed crowds and tension-laden games of Wimbledon. Away from the international arena, though,

(www.bowlsengland.com) or find an indoor venue via the English Indoor Bowling Association (http://www.eiba. co.uk). Whether you’re playing indoors or outdoors, the objective is to roll biased balls, so that they stop as close as possible to a smaller ball (usually called a ‘jack’ or a ‘kitty’). WHERE TO PLAY Lewes has a strong historical bowls tradition. The Lewes Bowling Green has been in use since the 17th century

tennis is one of the most versatile sports around. It can be played indoors or outdoors, on grass, clay or hard courts. Games can be competitive or relaxed, singles or doubles – and all you need to get started is a racket, a ball and a partner. “Tennis can be started from as young as three and into your 80s and 90s,” said Suzi Christie of Cross in Hand Tennis Club. “It’s a great sport for getting you outside and giving you aerobic exercise as well as mental stimulation.” The Lawn Tennis Association (www.lta. org.uk) is the governing body for tennis in Britain and offers a club finder for aspiring new players. WHERE TO PLAY Located just to the west of Heathfield, Cross in Hand Tennis Club (https:// clubspark.lta.org.uk/) is one of the area’s leading tennis venues. According to Suzi, the club welcomes players of all ages and standards. “For beginners, returners or people who want to improve, there is

and counted Tom Paine as one of its earliest members – he’s said to have pondered ideas for The Rights of Man while playing bowls. Nowadays, the Lewes Bowls Club (www.lewesbowlsclub.co.uk) offers a welcoming and sociable place to play, with coaching available for beginners. “All you need to come and try your hand at bowls is a flat pair of shoes,” says the club. “The big thing with bowls is to take part and to have fun!”

an excellent coaching programme,” she noted. “For more experienced players there are ladder competitions and the opportunity to represent the club in various leagues. The club has five excellent artificial clay courts with floodlighting and a clubhouse with changing facilities and a bar.” l

hen Georgina, her husband Mark and their children, William, Lottie and Henry entered the very dated property in East Grinstead, there was not the instant attraction that most people talk about. “We had been living in London and East Sussex and had the best of both worlds, but when we viewed the property initially we hated it because it was so out of date,” said Georgina. “Then, when we walked into the sitting room, what hit me was the lovely green expanse through the windows at the back of the house,” she added. Although it was impossible to see the view at the time, Georgina saw the potential and decided to

SITTING ROOM The sitting room is light and airy with window seat views across the stunning garden

When we viewed the property initially we hated it because it was so out of date put in bi-fold doors both downstairs and upstairs to take advantage of the views. “We changed all the windows and did a lot of re-modelling because it just didn’t flow. It really was a mish-mash of different plastic windows and then there was William Morris wallpaper everywhere which just wasn’t our style. We really wanted a calm and relaxing space that would be continuous in its theme in every room of the house, we wanted it to be neutral in muted shades of whites and taupes.” Previously the couple were living in London and also owned a place in East Sussex. “But we had always liked this area and the location seemed ideal as it was close to schools and to East Grinstead station. It was an important factor to bring the children up in a more rural environment, and with the sea and countryside on the doorstep it appeared perfect. It was also an easy commute for Mark who worked in London, so it all seemed very manageable.” Georgina explained. Structurally the house was sound. “We just had to move walls around

to give it a better flow, then we installed the new staircase and new flooring.” However, the garden was the biggest job Georgina recalled. “We completely re-landscaped the garden as we couldn’t see the amazing outlook that we can see now. Then we opened up the terrace to make the most of the view. It had been so obscured it was unbelievable, and suddenly we had given it an Ibizan feel, which we both love.” The limestone flooring in the kitchen was carried out onto the terrace to make it continuous, “It’s a great party and entertaining house – we have enjoyed so many celebrations here,” said Georgina. On entering the house, the hallway is impressive, with a lovely wide staircase and original wood flooring. Period features abound high ceilings, handsome fireplaces and intricate cornicing, while the large windows look out everywhere to the beautiful settings beyond.

DINING ROOM The open plan kitchen/dining area all link together with the terrace – making the house perfect for entertaining

“I love looking out onto the view from the window seat, it is a perfect quiet space to wind down with a book. It was already here along with some Grecian columns, but we removed them, and just gave the seat a bit of a facelift,” Georgina laughed. Through into the sitting room there is the magnificent original working fireplace and of course the glorious views out onto the gardens. Georgina and Mark knew exactly the look they wanted to achieve.

“We wanted to create a comfortable and elegant interior that was sympathetic to our style and practical needs. We love a neutral backdrop and we already had several antique pieces, family treasures and paintings that would fit in perfectly. And we would like to add more if we can,” said Georgina about her penchant for buying antique pieces of furniture, particularly chairs! This in mind, they created a tasteful scheme using cool heritage paint colours, luxurious textures and contrasting furniture to give a sense of light and shade. Contemporary yet classic elements were introduced to mix old and new such as the sofa and designer ‘surfboard’ coffee table.

HENRY’S BEDROOM Bunk beds make sleepovers fun and maximise the floor space for playing with friends

On the ground floor the free standing rustic kitchen opens up beautifully to the terrace and open plan dining area. It has further access to a utility room with streamlined units and appliances which maximise the space. “Having the three areas in close proximity, is practical and perfect for entertaining,” said Georgina. Beyond the flight of stairs is the fresh family bathroom with a stunning freestanding bath, while in the main bedroom on the top floor Georgina has opted for a French boudoir look with inspired daybeds, linens and attractive painted furniture. Georgina and Mark have successfully created a beautiful family home – elegant and full of character and charm. With stunning architecture, beautiful views for miles, the house has it all. “We’ve never regretted moving here, it’s a wonderful place to live,” smiled Georgina. l Text by: Clare Wallace Photography: GAP Interiors/Fiona Walker-Arnott

HOMES EXTRA

BRINGING Home office, playroom, dining room or even a chill-out room; a conservatory can be whatever you want it to be, whilst also adding value and a wow factor to a home as Adele Trathan explains

s families grow and homes fill up with a lifetime of accumulation, space is always at a premium, even more so during the last year when most of us have had to live, breathe and work in one place – our home! Originally, a conservatory was a small side extension to a home, in which plants were grown. They were very popular in Victorian and Edwardian times and thanks to modern building

greenhouse styled rooms with temperatures that ranged from freezing in winter to smoking hot in summer. Now, there’s an incredible range of styles, from traditional to contemporary, with better climate control using modern technology and materials to create the perfect conservatory. To be classed as a conservatory, the walls must be at least 50% glass and the roof at least 75% glass. The structure also needs to be built against the wall of the property and have heating independent to the rest of the property. The size and location of a conservatory will dictate whether or not planning permission is required. After that, the next step is to choose the frame materials. May 2021 | SUSSEX LIVING 61

Hardwood is ideal for a more traditional look and for older properties but is also more costly and requires a certain amount of TLC when it comes to maintenance. Choose from a range of wood and painted finishes to fit in perfectly with your home. If you’re looking for that authentic feel, it might be worth investing the extra pounds. The most popular and affordable option is uPVC. This material is easy to maintain and comes in various colours. Coupled with solar self-cleaning glass, which keeps rooms at a pleasant temperature as well as saving money on endless visits from the window cleaner, uPVC is a smart choice for the modern family. Aluminium frames are long lasting, strong and recyclable, available in almost any colour or style. In many conservation areas authorities now accept the fully recyclable aluminium framing as a real alternative to the traditional hardwood. For the beauty of wood, but the practicality of aluminium, a composite conservatory might be the right choice for you. Composite frames have a timber inner coupled with an aluminium outer, which reduces the need for maintenance, so everyone wins. Being closer to the great outdoors creates an opportunity to decorate your new conservatory with a calming outdoor theme. Mix nature and comfortability.

The range of natural furniture in organic materials is vast and a conservatory is the perfect environment to grow plants more suited to a warmer climate. Bougainvillea, oranges and lemons can all excel with a little love and attention. a conservatory could be the perfect option to add value to your property whilst giving the additional space to have a comfortable home office. Working in a separate space helps define the workspace as distinct from the home. It also offers flexibility in the future should you need to utilise the space for different needs. A conservatory could also be the solution to a much-needed playroom for a growing family. The children will have easy access to the garden and at the end of the day you can close the door on the toys and mess.

If you like your alfresco meals to be as delicious as the ones you eat indoors, why not ditch the barbecue and invest in a wood fired oven? “At this time of year, people are usually starting to think of holidays rather than stoves,” says Paul Labus, owner of Bolney Stoves. “But one of our suppliers, Morsø, a Danish company renowned throughout Europe for producing high-quality products, has launched an outdoor living range. It’s beautifully made and includes a growing number of products, from the Forno Outdoor Oven to the Grill ’71 and the Kamino Outdoor Fireplace.”

With summer just around the corner, now is the perfect time to invest in a versatile outdoor stove. Distinguished local company Bolney Stoves can help, writes Hanna Prince Paul points out that many people now use gas barbecues because of convenience. This, in his opinion, misses the point of cooking outdoors. A wood fired oven manages to capture the feel of a more traditional barbecue, but the flavours are significantly enhanced and you can use it to cook virtually anything. “I’ve cooked a leg of lamb and a complete roast dinner in the Forno Oven,” says Paul. “Last weekend I did a

a mark of elegance to any outdoor space and bring that coveted feeling of ‘hygge’ (the Danish art of living cosily) to your back garden. Just add an awning, outdoor heaters and a few Bel lamps – also available at Bolney Stoves – to create a magical evening atmosphere.

As lockdown eases, visitors to The Orchards in Haywards Heath will notice an exciting new addition to the shopping centre called Acorn Sales & Letting Agency. Lisa de Silva paid them a visit recently

ACORN SALES & LETTING AGENCY A

lthough Acorn Sales & Letting Agency is new, the team have a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise in estate agency, lettings and finance. “We’ve all got extensive experience in our individual sectors,” explained director Carl Turner. “My background is estate agency, Laura’s is lettings, while James is a financial specialist. We can offer people a one-stop shop, for selling, buying, rentals and mortgages.” What’s more, the team are all born and bred in the local area and being part of the wider community is important to them. “The location of the shop was really significant for us,” said Carl. “We wanted to be part of The Orchards so people could pop in for a chat and some face-to-face customer service, although initially that might be difficult with the pandemic.”

With the aim to serve and support the local community with warmth and integrity, building longterm relationships with clients and landlords is the number one priority for Acorn. “We really want to get to know our clients and their families because if we can understand their main drivers for moving, we are better able to help them,” Carl told me.

Drop in to say hello – the team are ready and waiting So, while the process of selling and buying houses is common to all, Acorn focus on the personal. To aid this and to keep communications flowing, whenever someone signs up with Acorn to market a property, a WhatsApp group is created with Carl, Laura and James (if finance is required). This

helps speed everything up and ensures everyone is on the same page. When it comes to lettings, Laura was keen to emphasise their flexibility. “We can provide any service that landlords require, from finding a tenant and dealing with all the paperwork, to collecting the rent, to full property management,” she explained. To celebrate their launch, Acorn have two promotional

offers for vendors. Firstly, listings will include a free video tour (worth £150) to showcase properties, giving prospective buyers the opportunity for a virtual viewing. Secondly, Acorn have teamed up with a local carpet and flooring company and once a sale is complete, vendors will be given a voucher towards upgrading the flooring in their new property. With a focus on customer service and a prime location in The Orchards, Carl is keen for people to pop in for a chat. So, whether you’re looking to buy, sell, rent or would like to talk to James about mortgage and financial products, do drop in to say hello – the team are ready and waiting. l Acorn Sales & Lettings 24 The Orchards Shopping Centre, Haywards Heath, RH16 3TH 01444 523444 sales@acornsalesandlettings.co.uk www.acornsalesandlettings.co.uk May 2021 | SUSSEX LIVING 69

MONEY MATTERS

CONVEYANCING They say that moving home can be one of life’s most stressful experiences. It can also be expensive – taking into account estate agent’s commission, stamp duty, surveys, removals and, perhaps most importantly, conveyancing – as explained by Peter d’Aguilar

Ask family and friends for recommendations based on their own experiences and check out online reviews and testimonials. Be wary of an estate agent’s referral – as they may have a financial agreement with the firm. Choose someone well-qualified who you like and trust and remember

C

onveyancing is the transfer of the legal title of a property or land from one person to another. The conveyancing process starts when an offer is accepted and finishes when the keys are received. This is normally a two-stage operation. The first stage is the ‘exchange of contracts’ at which point the terms of the deal are fixed. The second is ‘completion’ when the legal title passes from the vendor to the purchaser. Buying or selling property is likely to be one the biggest financial transactions in life for most people. To ensure this process takes place as quickly, efficiently and economically as possible, the selection of the right solicitor for the job is essential. Here are a few suggestions to help with your research. 70 SUSSEX LIVING | May 2021

Patience, goodwill and good communications on all sides are paramount good two-way communications are vital. Check whether the firm or individual is on your mortgage provider’s panel of conveyancers. Don’t be fobbed off with an inexperienced member of staff. Avoid using the same solicitor as your buyer or seller. Select a conveyancer with local

knowledge. Don’t necessarily go for the cheapest quote but do bear in mind high fees do not always guarantee the best service. Do they charge a fixed fee or a percentage of the property value? Ask for a written estimate of all likely costs and expenses, including any extra disbursements. Don’t withhold any relevant information from your solicitor and ensure they keep you fully in the loop throughout. Discuss how long the conveyancing is likely to take – six to eight weeks is an average length of time, but factor in space for any scheduled or unforeseen delays. Ask about their dispute procedure and make sure they are members of professional bodies such as the Law Society and the Council of Licensed Conveyancers. It is also worth investigating online conveyancing services, as they can be cheaper and offer the advantages of online case management, document signing and verification – which can speed up the process. To avoid unnecessary delays and expenses, have the necessary paperwork ready at the outset – contact details of all parties, mortgage information, any planning permission, structural considerations or other relevant data that could affect the sale or purchase. Keep in mind the prospect of a few unexpected problems along the way – so patience, goodwill and good communications on all sides are paramount. l

aroline at Home is one of those shops that you can lose yourself in for hours. It’s a treasure trove of floral fabrics, plump linen cushions, delicately scented candles and beautifully printed china, with that cosyyet-classy feel that most of us would love to create in our own living room. But this isn’t just any interior shop. Caroline Packham, the brains behind the business, specialises in creating bespoke soft furnishings to order, from curtains and blinds to beautiful upholstery. She’s been sewing since childhood, inspired by memories of the floral summer dresses that her mother used to create on an old-school Singer sewing machine. “I do it for love,” she tells me, as we chat over a low table piled with tempting fabric sample books. “Sewing brings back memories of my childhood.” In 2005, with two young children at home, Caroline decided to turn her hobby into a profession. She took a City and Guilds course in soft furnishings and began making curtains at home. Her dream, though, was always to have a shop. “I started to put all the profit I was making through the sewing back into the business,” she explains. “And then, four years ago, I opened Caroline at Home. Now I have a small team working with me, but everything is still handmade locally.”

MAKE HOME

beautiful Offering everything from bespoke soft furnishings and room styling to gifts from local designers, Caroline at Home is one of Haywards Heath’s hidden treasures, as Hanna Prince finds out

Caroline’s intuitive feel for interior design is obvious as soon as you walk into the shop. She also has a natural flair for tailoring her design sense to different likes and personalities – a gift that she’s channelled into a room styling service. “A lot of people don’t necessarily want an interior designer, they just want somebody to help them make their rooms work and bring a look together,” she says. “My strong point is that I’m very good at reading people.” She looks at me and smiles. “For instance, I can see that you’d like a rustic look rather than something sleeker.” Her reading is absolutely spot on – impressive after ten minutes of acquaintance – but this knack for sensing what’s right for the individual is what makes Caroline’s service so unique. She likes to visit customers’ houses before

embarking on an upholstery or curtains project to measure up and ensure that the fabric works in the home environment. She also prefers to work with small, local designers, stocking fabrics and gifts from the likes of Lindfield-born Zoe Glencross and Mosney Mill. Even if you don’t take advantage of Caroline’s bespoke services, it’s worth popping into the shop to lose yourself in the delectable range of gifts. “This is the kind of place where you just want everything,” says a customer who pops into the shop halfway through my visit. She’s at home already. l Caroline at Home 29 The Orchards, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, RH16 3TH 07591 984703 caroline@carolineathome.co.uk carolineathome.co.uk May 2021 | SUSSEX LIVING 73

Not surprisingly it took ages to find it, but the couple were determined to locate a home that satisfied all their exacting requirements. “With just three of us in the family I did not want to be stuck out in a very rural and remote spot, especially as Nicholas worked in London during the week,” Annie explained. “But we did want some seclusion and not to be within earshot of traffic, plus we wanted a house with a decent view, set in the middle of a well matured garden. We looked at dozens of properties, many of which were either too big and sprawling with long corridors, or the other extreme and too cramped. What I loved about this house was its compact layout. You never feel isolated or stuck out on a limb as all the rooms fan off from the main staircase, which leads into a lovely big square hall.” The house is steeped in history which appealed to both Nicholas and Annie. “Architectural historians have paid us impromptu visits since we have lived here. The original building would have at one point in time, had a central open fireplace with smoke rising through just a hole in the roof – not

Then in 1960 it was knocked back into one house and modernised and it then remained untouched until Annie and Nicholas moved in. “It was locked in a 60s time warp,” said Annie.

What I loved about this house was its compact layout As they didn’t have a huge budget for the makeover of the cottage, it was mostly cosmetic which Annie said, “It just goes to show, how you do not need a lot of money to make dramatically beautiful changes. It was largely achieved with just a paint brush and pots of paint. In an old cottage like this one, I did not want lots of pattern or colour on the walls, which would complicate and overwhelm the interior. So instead I painted just the window frames in colour and painted the walls all white.” “Nicholas did an amazing job on the outside garden area, we had an area of scrubland by the swimming pool, which he cleared and turned to grass, which made a huge difference. Whilst inside, I painted most of the walls white and removed as many of the old carpets as I could. Then I painted the floorboards in off-white which looked quite special as they vary in plank sizes and some are quite wide and uneven. But the variations created character.”

Annie explained, she went on to paint old tiles in the hall, tiles behind the Aga, tiles in the bathroom and even several pieces of junk furniture. “It was all perfectly feasible and inexpensive but with the amazing paints now on the market the results looked surprisingly professional.” To create contrast and inject some colour, she painted all the window frames in a pale blue. “I knew my favourite colour is red which would show up best against the white and muted blue.” For Annie, the most important asset of the cottage has been that it has “lots of nooks and crannies and it really suited my style which is country, eclectic, French and decorative, which all slowly developed out of my interest in shabby chic.” Having done an art foundation course and opened a dress shop when she first graduated, a sense of style has always been her main inspiration whether in fashion or interiors. “I have

For instance, I have always collected Kate Greenaway but the pieces always looked a bit of a mess until Nicholas rearranged them.” Annie warns that her kind of style attracts clutter and she has to keep it under control. “Every now and then I have a clear out and edit out the junk keeping only what I love. The rest goes to charity.” Full of money saving ideas, Annie used inexpensive embroidered voile panels at windows in the main bedroom and her guest room, and then combined them with white blinds. “People can spend a fortune on interlined curtains but in a small cottage like this, they would be particularly inappropriate.” Another radical saving that she suggested was to create a kitchen along continental lines with open shelves hidden behind pretty curtains. “The Italians keep a stock of winter and summer curtains just as some people in England have seasonal sofa covers or rugs. It is so much cheaper than having a fitted kitchen, which I find so boring and I can change the colour scheme any time I like.” l

BLOOMING TIMES

This month, Flo Whitaker’s on the veg patch. If you’re new to veg growing, you can be sure of success with beans – and now’s the best time to plant them

EASY BEANS P

rovided you give them a sunny, sheltered site and fertile soil, runner beans are easy to cultivate. They’re quick-growing and vigorous, so put a strong support framework in place before setting out the plants. Using 8ft (240cms) garden canes, arrange two parallel rows of canes approximately 45cms apart, with 20cm spacings between each cane. Bury the canes at least 30cms deep to give sufficient anchorage. Push them into the ground at a slight angle so that each cane crosses its opposite partner about 30cms from the top. Tie each opposing pair together with twine. Place a cane horizontally along the ‘V’ shapes above the string ties and bind everything together. Finally, drive two more canes or tree stakes at the ends of the row and secure to the framework. Alternatively, a simple wigwamshaped support can be made using

A simple wigwam-shaped support can be made using canes arranged in circle and tied together at the top 90 SUSSEX LIVING | May 2021

canes arranged in circle and tied together at the top. As they climb, the plants will cast shade, inhibiting growth inside the wigwam, so crop yield will be reduced. However, wigwams have some advantages; they’re highly decorative, are quick to construct and can be fitted into awkward areas where there is insufficient space for rows. At this time of year, when there is minimal chance of frost, bean seeds can be sown direct outdoors but this method is not without risk as the emerging shoots are highly attractive to slugs and birds, so there is much to be said for raising plants in the controlled environment of a greenhouse or sunny windowsill. Sow seeds 5cms deep in individual 9cm pots - they’ll germinate within a week. ‘Tall’ pots specifically designed to accommodate their long, vigorous roots can be purchased - or make your own paper pots using a jam jar as a mould. When the plants reach 10-15cms high, set them into ground that has been enriched with

multipurpose fertiliser and water-retaining organic matter such as leaf mould or compost. Young plants may need tying in at first, but they’ll soon develop the climbing instinct. Runner beans come in seemingly endless varieties. Some produce flowers in dainty pink or white, while others have striking bi-coloured blooms. Tall varieties will easily attain 2 metres and are best ‘pinched out’ at the growing tip when they’ve reached the desired height. ‘Bush’ types such as ‘Hestia,’ (50cms) require just a few twiggy branches for support and do well in large patio pots or half barrels. If you ask me to name one vegetable I would not be without, the climbing French bean, ‘Cobra’, (150cms) gets my vote every time. Prolific, stringless and supertasty, it keeps on going until October, so if you’ve never grown beans before give ‘em a go! l

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Garden Sage was born with the ethos of providing quality plants and sound horticultural advice. After five years and a recent move to a new home near Henfield, Robert Veitch went to see how far they’ve come

Sage Advice FOR THE GARDEN

T

he knowledgeable folk at Garden Sage have been advising the gardeners of Sussex since 2016, and this spring they’ve moved home, to the outskirts of Henfield. “A new home, means a new beginning,” enthused owner Ed Nugent as we sat inside a polytunnel. “We’ve already welcomed lots of returning friends and customers, but it’s also great to see new faces from as far afield as Horsham and Brighton.” The new location is on the A287 between Henfield and Cowfold. It has plenty of onsite parking. Tea, coffee and cake are available in the car park at weekends from Mama Brew in their horsebox. Having only moved recently, Garden Sage is currently operating at a similar level to their previous site in Hassocks. But there’s plenty of room for organic expansion in the future at their new home. Garden Sage was started in 2016 by husband and wife team Ed and Josie Nugent. Just over a year ago they joined forces with Steve Bartram, a nursery owner from Albourne. “It was perfect timing,” smiled Steve. “It made a lot of

sense as I was already supplying plants to Ed and Josie.” The team grow what they can at their nursery otherwise they use UK suppliers wherever possible. The aim is to produce as much own grown stock as possible and broaden the range as they expand. Ed and Steve indicated that growing plants locally means they’re better suited to the local climate, meaning they have a greater chance of thriving in the gardens of Sussex. All plants sold by Garden Sage, whether home grown or brought in from other nurseries, hold a plant passport – an identifier as to their nursery of origin. This is vital for promoting good plant health and husbandry. Sustainability is also high on the agenda at Garden Sage. All the plants are grown peat free. As explained by Ed, “Peat free composts have, in the past, been notorious for drying out and lacking appropriate nutrient but we use and supply Melcourt Sylvagrow – a bark based product that is so effective it has been endorsed by the Royal Horticultral Society.” In a bid to reduce single-use plastics they also offer this compost in a ‘Bag for Life’ which you

can return to refill. Refills are also available on a range of liquid and dry plant feeds – just remember to bring a suitable container. Some of the plants on display at Garden Sage might be considered oddities and curiosities, but they hark back to the spirit of the bowler hat wearing Victorian and Edwardian plant hunters who searched in farflung places for interesting botanical specimens. “We retain their pioneering spirit,” observed Ed. “If you’re searching for something different, you’ll probably stumble across it here. We’re not a bog standard corporate garden centre, we’re a nursery with character.” If the plant that you are looking for isn’t in stock the team will do their best to source one for you. “We want you to plant your garden with the plants you want,” declared Ed. “We’ve found some really unusual things for people in recent years.” The eagerness among the Garden Sage team is infectious. Almost all of the nine-strong team have qualifications and/or years of experience in the

industry which means they are keener to advise than to sell you the wrong plant. “No one shrugs their shoulders here,” revealed Ed. “If we don’t have the answer, we will find out for you. We are passionate about seeing people grow as much as the plants.” Garden Sage specialise in plants, pots, compost, tools and advice. Good customer service goes without saying.

The willingness to help customers is obvious. It’s easy to say, but it’s true… the team know their stuff. Throughout our conversation, the enthusiasm of Ed and Steve constantly shone. “I’m still obsessed with plants” cited Ed with a grin. “We really enjoy what we do,” added Steve. Gardening is a healthy activity and it’s good for the soul as well. Garden Sage is open seven days a week, so why not go and get some sage advice from the experts. As Ed said, “It’s about people… and plants.” l Garden Sage Nurseries London Road, Henfield, West Sussex, BN5 9AA 01273 041785 info@gardensage.co.uk www.gardensage.co.uk

Pierre Magnol’s Legacy The ancient magnolia plant dates back to the dinosaurs, and was named after the French botanist Pierre Magnol. With over 200 varieties listed, Peter Erridge explains their interesting backstory and the best ways to cultivate them in the gardens of Sussex

F

ossilised magnolia type plants dating back 95 million years have been found. Magnolias appeared before bees, leading the flowers to evolve for pollination by beetles. Their main centre of origin is South and East Asia with another group in eastern North America. Magnolia is the official flower of North Korea, the Gangnam district of South Korea, and the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai. The impressive magnolia flower is represented on the flag of the American state of Mississippi and is also the official flower of Louisiana. At their original sites many species are endangered where the plants are cut down for firewood or the land is cleared for food production. Magnolias are named after Pierre Magnol, an eminent 17th century French botanist and Professor of

Medicine. The National Collection is held in Cornwall where over 40 species of magnolia plus many hybrids are held. More locally, some of the finest examples can be found in gardens just outside Haywards Heath. Magnolias with their large white, pink or purple flowers first emerge in a tulip shape, gradually opening to a bowl or a star shape. The earliest flowers appear in March followed until mid-summer by other varieties. In favourable conditions there may be repeat blooming, on a lesser scale, even as late as October. Most have a fragrant aroma, which can best be appreciated by selecting low growing varieties. Many magnolias grow to over 20m (60ft) such as M. grandiflora, however in Sussex none is currently recorded as exceeding 13m (45ft) in height. This genus hybridises easily allowing the best aspects of different species to be selected to develop plants which are more suitable for modern gardens.

GARDENING

M. denudata

There are now over 200 varieties of magnolia; one online nursery lists 177 varieties, but local plant centres usually have a limited range of hybrids. Searching online for compact magnolias results in examples varying in size from M. laevifolia ‘minnie mouse’ at 1.25m (4ft) upwards. The white flowering M. denudata, ‘Lily tree’ which grows to 10m (33ft) has been hybridised to produce one example at 2m (7ft) with a red base to the flowers, two white types to 3m (10ft) and 6m (20ft), and a 10m (33ft) yellowish flower variety. M. Soulangeana 8m (26ft) has a hybrid ‘Lilliputian’ 3m (10ft). Many hybrids flower later than the parent species to reduce frost damage, and with more fragrant and impressive flowers. Older varieties of magnolia seldom bloom before they are 20 years old, the hybrids flower after 3-5 years but they need time to settle after planting before blooming.

Their main centre of origin is South and East Asia with another group in eastern North America

M. stellata Rosea

Evergreen varieties develop into large trees, with the blooms often becoming submerged within the foliage. The majority of this species have deciduous foliage and some plants come into flower before any leaves appear, the bare branches carrying large blooms, which in good years create an impressive floral display resembling pink or white lollipops. However, the lack of foliage protection renders them liable to frost damage. Site selection is important. For best results magnolias should be planted where they will get partial or full sun and in fertile, humus rich moist but well drained soil, pH 6.5-7.5. The buds and flowers need shelter from cold winds. This can be provided by an adjacent wall or building. The evidence is that

the roots of magnolias rarely cause damage to the foundations of walls. Planting is best done in autumn when

Controlling the size and shape should be started at an early stage in the life of the plant. LEGEND

Which Witch Is the Worst Witch? T

In the supernatural world, spells, incantations, rituals and magic are commonplace, though in the rational world these things take some explaining. Shaun Cooper offers a few thoughts and examples on the folklore of witchcraft in Sussex

here are over 60 places in Sussex with definite reports of witches, with the range of witch legends from across the county being both broad and interesting. Generally, Sussex witch legends are typical of those found across Britain. Many witches were reputed to be shape-changers and whimsical stories are commonplace. A witch from Duddleswell called Dame Garson could change into a hare when she wanted to spy on people. Although it might have been supposed that all witches could change their shape, only about a third of county witch legends feature that sort of thing. Yarns concerning witches who could immobilise horses and wagons also proved popular. Witches who immobilised horses and wagons, or wagons-and-teams, were believed to have used their sorcery at Albourne, Hurstpierpoint, Laughton, Wigperry, Plumpton, Ditchling, West Grinstead, Crowborough, Horsted Keynes, and Hadlow Down, to name but just a few locations. Belief in witchcraft lingered long in some of the more rural parts of Sussex, and so it has quite a few unusual witch legends – Old Martha, of Plumpton is a notable example. My favourite tale about Old Martha is the one Marcus Woodward recounts in The Mistress of Stanton’s Farm (1938) concerning the time she chased him down a hill, running backwards, and brandishing long knives. He also tells of an incident that occurred near East Chiltington. ‘A carter making a journey to Lewes on a dark night with a loaded wagon saw something spring up at the horse’s heads, by which they were thrown into a great fright, and how it turned into a hare which he struck with his whip, and how the hare then materialised into Old Martha.’ A very similar old tale was published in the Kent & Sussex Courier in 1932 about a Crowborough witch who leaped at the horses in the form of a black dog. An even earlier version

was recorded by Alice Catharine Day in 1927 in her book Glimpses of Rural Life in Sussex During the Last Hundred Years. This witch was named as Mrs. Weaver of Hadlow Down and the incident was said to have occurred near the Dudsland Paygate, on the modern day A267 between the villages of Cross-inHand and Five Ashes. What’s interesting about these tales is that the witch had already shape-changed when she attacked the horses. Although Sussex also has other examples, this curious hybrid of the two most popular types of witch legends is very rare – especially in the shires. Another unusual type of witch legend illustrates the uncanny laws prevailing during the death of a witch from old age. Nanny Smart became the notorious 18th century witch at Hurstpierpoint. Not only did she immobilise wagons-and-teams, but she also enjoyed bewitching civilians. It was reported, ‘She could not die unless someone bought the secrets of her life, and at last a man from Cuckfield bought them for a half-penny, and she died in a blue flame!’ Similarly, Witch Killick of Crowborough could not die, old though she was, until her witch-spirit ways had passed to somebody else, someone who was preferably one of her kin. When her time was upon her, Witch

Dr. P. Habberton Lulham, writing in Sussex County Magazine in 1939, noted, ‘The belief in witchcraft is by no means dead yet, and in many Sussex villages I have been told that the witch’s malevolence is directed mainly against farm horses.’ And in Sussex Ways and Byways, (1969), Cecile Woodford writes, ‘Superstitions linger longer in Sussex than most other counties. Even today the belief in witchcraft and ill-wishing has not entirely faded out.’ Cecile Woodford also notes that over Crowborough way a supernatural

‘pack of hounds still pursue an old witch in the guise of a hare.’ This may be similar to the phenomenon known as The Witch Hounds, sometimes heard around Ditchling Beacon in the summer, and here described from a report in the Mid Sussex Times, in May 1933. ‘Suddenly the wind rose and the shepherd raised a hand in warning. Faintly at first, but growing in intensity, there came the sound of a hunt in full cry – the thud of hoof-beats, the short, excited yelping of the hounds, and the call of a hunting horn. The sounds grew louder and louder till they seemed to

be just above us. Then they faded away.’ Be they folklore and legends handed down through the generations, or authenticated reports we should all pay heed to, witchcraft through the ages remains fascinating subject matter. l A Sussex Book of Witch Legends (2020) by Shaun Cooper is published by Country Books

A LIFE OF FLIGHT Adonis Blue (Polyommatus bellargus)

t was the first real day of spring and cherry blossom was bursting from the branch as I saw a flash of colour dip behind sunlit white flowers. It was a Peacock butterfly, common across the UK but still uncommonly beautiful. Some survive for eleven months, hibernating over winter to emerge in March on sunny days. They begin breeding immediately and the next generation arrive in July to gorge en masse on their favourite plant, Buddleia Walk on the South Downs in early summer and you’re likely to see the dazzling Adonis Blue. The males sport a wing colour to rival those of a kingfisher. A chalk downland specialist, its larvae feed solely on Horseshoe Vetch and the

But overall, true butterfly diversity is possibly greatest in June. One of the greatest success stories in Sussex concerns the Duke of Burgundy, the unlikely name of an orange and brown chequered butterfly that used to be prolific in the coppiced woodland of days gone by. Once commercial coppicing almost ceased, the Wealden colonies were lost, one by one. Fortunately, the Brighton and Hove area contains the largest stock of Elms in Britain because of the measures to limit the growth of the Elm Bark Beetle population by East Sussex County Council. A pioneering rewilding project near Horsham is both the county and UK hotspot when it comes to seeing the magnificent Purple Emperor butterfly. If you find one dormant in a shed or building over winter, do not disturb it as the energy it will have to expend in flying may mean it cannot survive for long. THE BIKE T

here’s something about sitting down while exercising that gives it a refined quality. If your preference is to go backwards then rowing should become your sport of choice. If your preference is to go forwards, then it must be cycling. Cycling is defined as ‘the sport or activity of riding a bicycle’ with a bicycle being a frame connected to wheels, pedals, brakes, a seat, and a handlebar for steering. Unlike running or boxing it’s a sport with a low impact factor for the

No matter what sort of bike you ride, there’s something uplifting about turning the pedals and becoming self-propelled as Robert Veitch discovered when we put him back on his bike and took off the stabilisers In this part of the world, we are blessed with a varied terrain that suits all cyclists; including the inland rolling hills and high ground of The Weald, the flat lands just north of the South Downs, the contours of the South Downs, and the coastal area which isn’t as flat as might be anticipated.

In recent years the roads have become populated with mamils (middle aged men in lycra), pounding the tarmac on road bikes, covering a vast number of miles, keeping fit and loving every second of it. Off road routes remain the playground of the casual cyclist and training ground for young pedallers. The

Forest Way, Cuckoo Trail, Worth Way, Downs Link, and the South Downs Way are all bike compatible and freely available. Venues like Friston Forest, Rye Harbour, Bedgebury, St. Leonard’s Forest and Tilgate Forest all offer a variety of routes. When the sun is shining and the kids are enthusiastic, strap the bikes on the car, grab the helmets and get going. Of course, before setting out, it’s advisable to ensure any bike undergoes some scrutineering to ensure it’s safe. Experienced cyclists might do this themselves, but

Cycling charity Sustrans (www.sustrans.org.uk) promote a variety of options on their website; varying from short punchy routes to extended sections of the national cycle network. The Cycling UK website (www. cyclinguk.org) is also a mine of information. There are also many cycling clubs and groups across the county, willing to accept and help new members. Cycling is an environmentally friendly

and sociable activity. Cyclists may generate plenty of hot air from time to time but they produce no noxious exhaust gasses. In recent times, the advent of the e-bike is slowly revolutionising transportation. E-bikes make that commute all the easier, utilising rechargeable batteries to generate that extra assistance that’s sometimes required for those hills that seem slightly steeper than they look. Why sit in traffic, on the bus or train, if an e-bike does the job in a similar timeframe

Penny Farthing, but he also developed the Ariel bicycle with the first metal spokes. He later engineered the ‘Starley Axle’ for the earliest quad bikes. The successor to the ‘Starley Axle’ is the differential found in cars. In recent times Sussex had its own standard-bearer at the top of the sport. Sean Yates lived in Forest Row, cycled at East Grinstead Cycling Club and competed at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. He won a stage of the 1988 Tour de France, wore the yellow jersey for a day in 1994 and was Bradley Wiggins’s directeur sportif when he won the Tour in 2012. Cycling is a sociable activity, its good exercise and offers a chance to enjoy the landscape while sitting down. Cadence, grupetto, parcours, hors catégorie and peloton may be phrases for the serious enthusiast, but the rest of us can still purchase a yellow jersey even if we can’t earn one on merit. l

How can I replace a gap in my smile?

Unsightly gaps in your smile can be replaced by dentures, bridges or implants Practical Benefits of Implants include: • Enhanced Usability – dental implants offer ‘set and forget’ convenience (unlike removable dentures that must be removed/replaced each day) • Enhanced Levels of Oral Health – where necessary, the procedure involves building the surrounding bone and soft tissues (halting and reversing any deterioration) • Enhanced Speech Delivery – dental implants are embedded into the bone and do not move/slip when speaking (eliminating mumbled speech) • Enhanced Mastication (ease of chewing) – dental implants are fixed into the bone and do not slip or move around when eating food

Psychological Benefits of Implants include: • Enhanced Self-Esteem – dental implants can create a smile that results in greater self-confidence during personal interactions • Enhanced Visual Appearance – dental implants have the visual appearance of well looked after natural teeth (resulting in peace of mind that people will not realise the teeth are prosthetic) • Enhanced Comfort – dental implants do not agitate the gums (e.g. removable dentures may cause friction issues)

ther dental practices have treated me as just another patient; that is not the case with Oakmead Dental Care. They have made me feel like a valued individual, with every visit being a welcoming experience. A huge step forward from dreading a visit to the dentist! Proposed treatment plans, including potential options, have been discussed with me as an educated adult, rather than being presented as a fait-accompli. All stages of treatment are fully explained during and after, which makes me feel involved in my own well-being. I am very reassured in their hands and am sure I will continue to be so for many years to come.”

WELLBEING

WHY BALANCE & POSTURE MATTER Standing tall might make us feel more confident but as Lisa de Silva explains, there are multiple benefits to our health and body from taking control of our body posture

A

t some point in our lives most of us will have been told to ‘Stand up straight!’ And while we might have rolled our eyes at this request, it is actually great advice. For posture not only affects our ability to balance but is also essential to our general health and wellbeing. Posture is defined as the body’s position when standing, sitting, lying down or performing movements including lifting, twisting and bending. Central to good posture is the position of your spine. There are three curves in the spine: the neck; the middle back and the lower back. The aim is to maintain these curves without lengthening them, creating what is known as a ‘neutral’ spine. This is achieved by keeping your chin parallel to the floor, your shoulders, hips and knees in alignment, your abdominal muscles flexed and your weight evenly distributed across both feet. Poor posture can affect our balance resulting in falls and injuries, particularly among the elderly. More generally, it can lead to tension headaches, backache, fatigue, increased wear on joints and joint pain, along with impaired

Good posture improves balance, keeps our bodies strong and helps to prevent injury digestion and lung capacity. Conversely, good posture improves balance, keeps our bodies strong and helps to prevent injury. When bones and joints are properly aligned, there is less muscle fatigue, less neck, back and shoulder tension, as well as improved circulation, digestion and breath control. As a result, we have more energy, can undertake our daily tasks free from pain and are less likely to suffer injuries. What’s more, good posture makes us naturally stand taller, feel stronger and radiate a genuine body confidence. l

HERE ARE OUR TOP TIPS TO IMPROVE POSTURE AND BALANCE 1 Be aware of your posture and check regularly throughout the day that your body is aligned and relaxed. 2 Try workouts, such as Pilates and yoga, that increase your core strength and improve your flexibility. 3 Build general muscle strength with a programme of resistance training. 4 Book a session with a physiotherapist or personal trainer to ensure you appreciate what good posture feels like and that you have the correct form when exercising. 5 Practise standing on one leg to help

118 SUSSEX LIVING | May 2021

improve your balance. You can make this harder by closing your eyes. 6 Invest in a wobble board or gym ball and practise balancing several times a day. 7 Step-ups can also help to improve hip stability and strengthen knees. Simply, step up with your right leg and bring your left leg up to join it in a slow and controlled manner, alternating the leading leg. 8 Ensure your working environment is as ergonomically friendly as possible and try to get up to stretch at least once every hour.

Keep balanced and well

As we get older, our muscles naturally start to lose strength and everyday tasks can become more of a challenge. The Wellbalanced strength & balance exercise programme is for anyone who wants to feel more steady and confident on their feet. We offer low cost exercise courses at the right level for you and our Wellbalanced instructors are qualified and experienced in Postural Stability and Falls Prevention. Give us a call to find out more.

The Wellbalanced Programme is delivered by AHS Wellbeing on behalf of Mid Sussex Wellbeing, Chichester Wellbeing, Adur & Worthing Wellbeing and Arun Wellbeing

A Wellbalanced course may be suitable if you... • are feeling less steady on your feet • are finding it harder to rise from a chair, or to use the stairs • have been referred by a GP, Healthcare Worker or other professional Get in touch today to find out how you can be referred onto a Wellbalanced course

The perfect partners; offering a combination of texture and taste, an ideal companion to salmon or steak. Meanwhile, put the egg 2 and white wine vinegar into a tall container and mix together using a hand blender.

Slowly add the melted 3 butter, while blending all the time. Add the oil in

the same way until the sauce becomes thick and creamy. Season with salt and pepper. Serve at room 4 temperature with asparagus and lemon to

Having a dog in your life can be a very rewarding experience, however it is also a lifelong commitment. Adam Levy, Regional Manager at Dogs Trust explains why it is important for potential owners to be fully informed before bringing a dog into their lives

LOCKDOWN DOGS I n 2020 there was a 62% increase in the number of enquiries Dogs Trust received from people wanting to adopt a dog. With families spending more time together at home during lockdown, it is understandable that this would seem like a good time to get a pet. However, with restrictions beginning to lift, we would advise potential owners to think about postlockdown life and whether they will be able to cope with the demands of having a dog. Originally, we anticipated around 40,000 dogs would be at risk of being abandoned because of the pandemic. While the extension of furlough and lockdown has kept many of us at home, we have not yet experienced a huge influx of ‘lockdown puppies’ coming into our care, however the full effects of the pandemic are yet to be felt. We are already starting to see signs of this as more dogs come into our care as their owners return to the workplace and spend more time away from home, while others have lost their job and can no

Living in a household of ‘lockdown learners’ has made Teddy determined to show he can also demonstrate his own practiced skills, as pawed by his human translator, Helen Stockton

T

here is a saying that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but I’m not sure why advancing in years means you can’t learn fresh things. Not that I’m an old dog myself you understand. I’m not even in double figures yet, and my predecessor, Rolo, lived to over sixteen, so I’m barely middle-aged. This is a status that I share with ‘Her Indoors’ although ‘barely’ is not an adverb I’d attach to her mid-life designation. During the prolonged spells of lockdown, people have been busy learning new things regardless of their age. Amongst our acquaintance there has been sign-language, guitar playing, DIY, bread making, bee keeping, wet felt making and wild water swimming. Quite impressive really. Since I’ve been living with ‘Them Indoors’ I have demonstrated some previously unseen skills. Because they rehomed me however, they don’t know if these are new skills or ones I’ve had before that I’ve been keeping quiet. For example, 128 SUSSEX LIVING | May 2021

I’m very good at walking upright on my back legs. This is very useful when I want to get to something on a table top – what can I tell you I’m a small dog. I am also good at spinning a toy around really quickly. ‘Them Indoors’ are surprised it doesn’t make me dizzy but I’m like a ballerina and keep my eyes on a fixed spot. I am very gentle at taking treats from people’s fingers, unlike Rolo, who would take your fingers too if you weren’t careful. I’ve found that being respectful of people’s digital integrity means that that you

are more likely to be offered a further treat. I’m not just a pretty face! ‘Her Indoors’ has returned to university to do some more studying so she’s clearly learning new things too. There has been a lot of huffing and puffing over her computer so I’m guessing her grey cells are feeling a bit stretched. I just keep her company and bring her a tuggy toy if I feel she needs some non-screen based distraction. ‘Him Indoors’ has been taking art classes so he can be found at his easel with his pencils and paper, squinting at some object and trying to capture its likeness. I’ve tried sitting nicely, directly in his line of vision, but so far, he hasn’t taken the hint. Now of course, I have an apprentice of my own, with the arrival of young Bear in our lives. She’s been busy learning the basics, like where to wee and how to sleep during the night, but I’m sure she’s got potential for more interesting stuff over time. I’ll see if I can enlighten her so just watch this space; new tricks can be fun for dogs of all ages! l

CARE

FOSTER CARE FORTNIGHT: Foster Care Fortnight takes place from May 10th-23rd and West Sussex County Council is using the national event to celebrate its fantastic carers and promote the real need for more foster carers in West Sussex as Stephen Pickthall explains

T

he theme is #WhyWeCare and the Council will be promoting the incredible role its foster carers play in supporting children in our care, a role which is needed more than ever after 12 months of the pandemic. Since the start of the pandemic, more and more people have been finding out about becoming a foster carer with West Sussex County Council. However, while enquiries have gone up, sadly the number of children who have come into care in West Sussex has risen too. Clare Spencer, Service Lead for Fostering at West Sussex County Council said, “It’s really positive that more people are finding out about fostering as a result of the pandemic. However, the reality is more children are also coming into our care. The need for people to foster in West Sussex has never been higher and we would love to hear from people who want to make a difference.” It usually takes between 4-6 months to go through the training and become

THE CHANCE TO CHANGE A LIFE

an approved foster carer. In the last year 23 households became approved carers with West Sussex County Council and are now supporting a child or children. Events of the last year have seen people reassess their situations, leading to many seeking something more rewarding in life. People looking for an alternative career are realising that

fostering can be a great option which can fit around family life and work, and make a real difference to a child’s life. Mark and Scott began fostering twins just before the first lockdown began. Scott said, “We’re really loving it and although it’s a total lifestyle change for us both, it has been brilliant.” Mark added, “We foster with West Sussex County Council because we know we’re part of a big network of other foster carers and there’s professional help if its ever needed.”

An enhanced allowance package for foster carers who support two or more children West Sussex County Council provide full training and ongoing support and guidance to all its carers. The Council provide competitive allowances and in April, introduced an enhanced allowance package for foster carers who support two or more children. You don’t have to be in a couple to become a foster carer and the council welcomes enquiries from people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. l If you are interested in fostering, you can speak to the friendly recruitment team on 033 022 27775. Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them. 23

Place a different arithmetical sign (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in each circle so that the total of each line across and down is the same. Perform the first calculation in each line first and ignore the mathematical law which says you should always perform division and multiplication before addition and subtraction.

WHY DO WORKERS IN THE DENTAL INDUSTRY STUFF YOUR MOUTH FULL OF IRONMONGERY, RENDERING YOU LITERALLY SPEECHLESS, THEN START A CONVERSATION? BECAUSE THEY CAN, THAT’S WHY. NEVER MIND – JUST BE GRATEFUL THEY’RE PREPARED TO DO SUCH A REVOLTING JOB, SAYS FLO WHITAKER “Does this hurt?” enquired the relentlessly cheerful dental hygienist as she vigorously poked my gum with something resembling a giant barbecue skewer. I wanted to reply, “Well, it didn’t …until you did that,” but “Arrgggh!” was all I managed as the hygienist also seemed to be holding my tonsils in a vice-like grip. “Oooh! You’ve got some inflammation there!” she continued, gleefully stabbing away. “Gotta floss, floss, floss!” Her words were delivered with snappy rhythm; like a tyrannical ballroom dancing instructor issuing orthodontic advice. Swapping the skewer for a tool with the power of an industrial orbital sander, she enthusiastically commenced buffing and polishing, pausing to comment on the apparently unusual fact that I still have a full complement of wisdom teeth. Clearly impressed, she decided to take a closer look; leaning precariously with one knee practically on my chest. Until that point, I hadn’t realised the rules governing dentistry and snooker are much the same; gymnastics are permitted – providing you always keep one foot on the floor. Other topics of our ‘chat’ included the “nightmare” of Internet supermarket shopping, the chances of booking a holiday this summer and “frankly, right now I’d commit murder for a haircut.” I eventually found myself out on the pavement, fifty quid poorer and bewilderedly wondering why everything seemed so dark, (having forgotten to remove the complimentary sunglasses). I’ve never understood the appeal of dentistry as a career and, thanks to Covid-19, that hygienist now spends her workdays clad in sweaty PPE gear. I hope she gets her holiday.
