Despite his Northern roots, actor Richard Hawley has been a long-time resident of Brighton. Currently walking the cobbles of Coronation Street as Johnny Connor, Lisa de Silva talked to Richard about living on the south coast and his work, both in Corrie and as a supporter of the Alzheimer’s Society

A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE

“M

ost of my early years were spent in the North. I was born in Yorkshire, was a student in Liverpool and then part of a theatre company in Leeds,” Richard told me. “Back then in the mid-70s and early 80s, Leeds was struggling with the effects of the miners’ strikes, there was a lot of economic deprivation and the atmosphere was highly politicised. As a theatre company, we were making art that was very connected to that.” As the group became more successful, touring became a way of life and gradually Richard was spending more and more time rehearsing in London. So, when his girlfriend Heather (now his wife of over 30 years) got a job as a teacher down in Brighton, Richard decided to move south to join her. “Basically, I moved down to Brighton in 1984 and I’ve been here ever since,” he laughed. “For the first four years, the demands of touring meant I spent little time there, but once I got involved in mainstream acting and had my children, it really began to feel like home. At the time, Brighton’s huge sense of fun provided a completely different vibe to the North and gradually, I fell in love with the place.”

It was then that I decided to learn about it properly and to do all I could to raise awareness and support those coping with the impact of dementia Having appeared in shows as diverse as Family Affairs and Prime Suspect, Richard achieved a lifelong ambition in 2015, when he landed the part of Johnny Connor in Coronation Street. With shooting in Manchester, he now enjoys spending time in two extraordinary cities, enjoying the best of both worlds. “Corrie’s a lovely show to work on. Everyone’s very funny, very direct and there’s a lot of straight-talking Northern humour. Part of me has always felt like a traitor for leaving the North, but the cast and crew are part of a deep-rooted old company and are incredibly welcoming.” Richard has also appreciated being involved in several major storylines, such as the suicide of his son, a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and more recently, coping with Charles Bonnet syndrome. For those unaware of Charles Bonnet syndrome, it is a condition that often starts with reduced eyesight, which then leads the brain to compensate by creating visions 10 SUSSEX LIVING | May 2021

in the form of hallucinations. Those experiencing the symptoms can confuse what’s happening with mental health issues and Richard is proud to be helping raise awareness of the syndrome. “I get to connect with research on these issues and conditions, as well as work with some amazing charities. It’s been great to represent those suffering with Charles Bonnet syndrome. Being able to tell peoples’ stories helps to balance out all the nonsense of being a celebrity,” he explained. Another disease which has had a huge and heartfelt impact on Richard, is Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia. The disease triggers a loss of brain function and symptoms include memory loss, confusion and difficulties with speech and understanding. Sadly, Richard’s father lived with Alzheimer’s for a decade before passing away in 2004, but the effect of the disease on his family has had a profound and lasting influence on Richard. “Living with Alzheimer’s is hard on families on a practical, financial and emotional level. My dad was very fortunate because he had both my mum and my sister around to support him - that was also a great comfort to me. Living and working so far away, I could only pop up to see him several times a year and was deeply grateful for help from the Alzheimer’s Society and their volunteers, who would come in to read to dad to give my mum and sister some respite.” After his dad passed, Richard initially started to help out at dementia cafes, as he remembered how embarrassing it could be for his mum to take his dad out to an ordinary café. This experience helped him to appreciate the comfort and understanding that comes from being part of a community with a shared experience of dementia. Then, when taking part in a Memory Walk organised by the Alzheimer’s Society along Brighton seafront, Richard met a family just like his own, struggling to deal with their father’s dementia. It was a significant moment for him. “Talking to them, made me realise how little equipped I’d been to speak to my dad or to know how to deal with him during his illness. It was then that I decided to learn about it properly and to do all I could to raise awareness and support those coping with the impact of dementia.” Today, Richard is a committed supporter of the Alzheimer’s Society and is currently supporting Dementia Action Week. He is passionate about government funding for both research into the disease and the development of a high-quality social care support system which is free at the point of use,

It was like we dwelt in the soul of the place together and walking back up there, his presence was still by my side.” Living in Sussex, Richard continues to enjoy countryside walks with his dogs, enjoying the panoramic views up on Ditchling and Firle Beacons. Yet, he confides that his favourite place to walk is along Brighton seafront. Not only was it the location of that first significant Memory Walk, but years ago after the birth of his twin girls, he walked down from the hospital to the seafront, along the prom and out onto the pier. Looking back over Brighton as a new father, he experienced a special moment of pure unadulterated love. “Brighton is home. I love living here and it’s where I plan to grow old disgracefully!” l

IT’S A MATCH! A new platform piloted in West Sussex could revolutionise the way that home care is delivered. Hanna Prince finds out more about CareMatch

hen you find yourself in need of home care, it can often happen suddenly. That’s why CareMatch, an innovative new platform that connects clients directly with local carers, is such an effective idea. CareMatch is the

brainchild of Anne Marie Perry, the owner-manager of home care services agency Abicare. It’s based on a deep understanding of the problems facing more traditional care models – not just the lack of guidance and signposting for those who find themselves urgently in need of home care, but also the difficulty of coordinating teams of carers, pay rates that fail to reflect responsibility levels, and high staff turnover within the industry. “With CareMatch, we want to change the world of care,” explains Anne Marie Perry. “My aim was to create teams of hyper-local carers so you’ll always be able to find a carer if you need one. I also wanted to pay carers more without increasing rates for customers and move away from the ‘time and task’ model to offer a person-

centred service that can really deliver outcomes.” The platform assigns ‘care hubs’ to individual clients. egend has it that cricket began in Sussex and that Arundel, formed in 1704 is the oldest club in the county. Sussex County Cricket Club, formed in 1839, is the oldest of all the county sides. It took them until 2003 to win the county championship. They won it again in 2006 and 2007. At the foot of the South Downs in the village of Hurstpierpoint, the cricket club has been batting and bowling since 1717. With the 2021 season underway, this progressive and inclusive club is noted for a family focused, welcoming nature at its Fairfield Recreation Ground home. In recent years, 2-lane cricket nets have been installed and a stateof-the-art bowling machine has been obtained. For 2021, 2 roll-on cages have been purchased for training sessions on the practice wicket. The evolution generated at the club during the last decade is remarkable. A solitary men’s team has become 200 members across 6 adult sides for men and women, plus junior teams ranging from the U9’s to U16’s. Once a male domain, cricket is now a sport for all.

It’s that time of year when the crack of leather on willow begins again in earnest as Robert Veitch reports Like teams across the land, Hurstpierpoint struggled through 2020. Being community minded, the club has chosen to forego the normal £40 fee to sponsor the match day ball this season, preferring to offer the opportunity free of charge to businesses within the parish boundaries. It’s a small but generous gesture to help local businesses get back on their feet this year.

Cricket creates camaraderie that bonds players in all teams Club President Dave Parsons has been through the ritual of strapping on his pads and walking out to the middle, willow in hand, to represent the club since July 12th 1970, when he scored 75 in his debut against Guildford

Here’s how to get involved Croquet has been an English country garden staple since the 1900s. Its origins are shrouded in mystery – one theory is that the game was imported from Ireland in the 1850s, but it’s more likely to be based on the French sport paille-maille. A form of the game is thought to have been enjoyed since prehistoric times, and bowls in its modern format has been played in England since the 12th century – possibly even earlier. hen Georgina, her husband Mark and their children, William, Lottie and Henry entered the very dated property in East Grinstead, there was not the instant attraction that most people talk about. “We had been living in London and East Sussex and had the best of both worlds, but when we viewed the property initially we hated it because it was so out of date,” said Georgina. “Then, when we walked into the sitting room, what hit me was the lovely green expanse through the windows at the back of the house,” she added. Although it was impossible to see the view at the time, Georgina saw the potential and decided to

SITTING ROOM The sitting room is light and airy with window seat views across the stunning garden

When we viewed the property initially we hated it because it was so out of date put in bi-fold doors both downstairs and upstairs to take advantage of the views. “We changed all the windows and did a lot of re-modelling because it just didn’t flow. It really was a mish-mash of different plastic windows and then there was William Morris wallpaper everywhere which just wasn’t our style. We really wanted a calm and relaxing space that would be continuous in its theme in every room of the house, we wanted it to be neutral in muted shades of whites and taupes.” Previously the couple were living in London and also owned a place in East Sussex. “But we had always liked this area and the location seemed ideal as it was close to schools and to East Grinstead station. It was an important factor to bring the children up in a more rural environment, and with the sea and countryside on the doorstep it appeared perfect. It was also an easy commute for Mark who worked in London, so it all seemed very manageable.” Georgina explained. Structurally the house was sound. “We just had to move walls around

to give it a better flow, then we installed the new staircase and new flooring.” However, the garden was the biggest job Georgina recalled. “We completely re-landscaped the garden as we couldn’t see the amazing outlook that we can see now. Then we opened up the terrace to make the most of the view. It had been so obscured it was unbelievable, and suddenly we had given it an Ibizan feel, which we both love.” The limestone flooring in the kitchen was carried out onto the terrace to make it continuous, “It’s a great party and entertaining house – we have enjoyed so many celebrations here,” said Georgina. On entering the house, the hallway is impressive, with a lovely wide staircase and original wood flooring. Period features abound high ceilings, handsome fireplaces and intricate cornicing, while the large windows look out everywhere to the beautiful settings beyond.

This is normally a two-stage operation. The first stage is the ‘exchange of contracts’ at which point the terms of the deal are fixed. The second is ‘completion’ when the legal title passes from the vendor to the purchaser. Buying or selling property is likely to be one the biggest financial transactions in life for most people. To ensure this process takes place as quickly, efficiently and economically as possible, the selection of the right solicitor for the job is essential. aroline at Home is one of those shops that you can lose yourself in for hours. It’s a treasure trove of floral fabrics, plump linen cushions, delicately scented candles and beautifully printed china, with that cosyyet-classy feel that most of us would love to create in our own living room. But this isn’t just any interior shop. Caroline Packham, the brains behind the business, specialises in creating bespoke soft furnishings to order, from curtains and blinds to beautiful upholstery. She’s been sewing since childhood, inspired by memories of the floral summer dresses that her mother used to create on an old-school Singer sewing machine. “I do it for love,” she tells me, as we chat over a low table piled with tempting fabric sample books. “Sewing brings back memories of my childhood.” In 2005, with two young children at home, Caroline decided to turn her hobby into a profession. She took a City and Guilds course in soft furnishings and began making curtains at home. Her dream, though, was always to have a shop. “I started to put all the profit I was making through the sewing back into the business,” she explains. “And then, four years ago, I opened Caroline at Home. Now I have a small team working with me, but everything is still handmade locally.”

Caroline’s intuitive feel for interior design is obvious as soon as you walk into the shop. She also has a natural flair for tailoring her design sense to different likes and personalities – a gift that she’s channelled into a room styling service. “A lot of people don’t necessarily want an interior designer, they just want somebody to help them make their rooms work and bring a look together,” she says. “My strong point is that I’m very good at reading people.” She looks at me and smiles. “For instance, I can see that you’d like a rustic look rather than something sleeker.” Her reading is absolutely spot on – impressive after ten minutes of acquaintance – but this knack for sensing what’s right for the individual is what makes Caroline’s service so unique. She likes to visit customers’ houses before

embarking on an upholstery or curtains project to measure up and ensure that the fabric works in the home environment. She also prefers to work with small, local designers, stocking fabrics and gifts from the likes of Lindfield-born Zoe Glencross and Mosney Mill. Even if you don’t take advantage of Caroline’s bespoke services, it’s worth popping into the shop to lose yourself in the delectable range of gifts. “This is the kind of place where you just want everything,” says a customer who pops into the shop halfway through my visit. Not surprisingly it took ages to find it, but the couple were determined to locate a home that satisfied all their exacting requirements. “With just three of us in the family I did not want to be stuck out in a very rural and remote spot, especially as Nicholas worked in London during the week,” Annie explained. “But we did want some seclusion and not to be within earshot of traffic, plus we wanted a house with a decent view, set in the middle of a well matured garden. We looked at dozens of properties, many of which were either too big and sprawling with long corridors, or the other extreme and too cramped. What I loved about this house was its compact layout. You never feel isolated or stuck out on a limb as all the rooms fan off from the main staircase, which leads into a lovely big square hall.” The house is steeped in history which appealed to both Nicholas and Annie. “Architectural historians have paid us impromptu visits since we have lived here. The original building would have at one point in time, had a central open fireplace with smoke rising through just a hole in the roof – not

unlike an Indian wigwam.” Nicholas claimed, “You can still see the smoke marks in the attic.” They have also discovered other information about the history of the cottage including that it was occupied by Roundhead soldiers and that in 1912 it was extended to make two cottages. Then in 1960 it was knocked back into one house and modernised and it then remained untouched until Annie and Nicholas moved in. “It was locked in a 60s time warp,” said Annie.

What I loved about this house was its compact layout As they didn’t have a huge budget for the makeover of the cottage, it was mostly cosmetic which Annie said, “It just goes to show, how you do not need a lot of money to make dramatically beautiful changes. It was largely achieved with just a paint brush and pots of paint. In an old cottage like this one, I did not want lots of pattern or colour on the walls, which would complicate and overwhelm the interior. So instead I painted just the window frames in colour and painted the walls all white.” “Nicholas did an amazing job on the outside garden area, we had an area of scrubland by the swimming pool, which he cleared and turned to grass, which made a huge difference. Whilst inside, I painted most of the walls white and removed as many of the old carpets as I could. Then I painted the floorboards in off-white which looked quite special as they vary in plank sizes and some are quite wide and uneven. But the variations created character.”

Architectural historians have paid us impromptu visits since we have lived here

Annie explained, she went on to paint old tiles in the hall, tiles behind the Aga, tiles in the bathroom and even several pieces of junk furniture. “It was all perfectly feasible and inexpensive but with the amazing paints now on the market the results looked surprisingly professional.” To create contrast and inject some colour, she painted all the window frames in a pale blue. “I knew my favourite colour is red which would show up best against the white and muted blue.” For Annie, the most important asset of the cottage has been that it has “lots of nooks and crannies and it really suited my style which is country, eclectic, French and decorative, which all slowly developed out of my interest in shabby chic.” Having done an art foundation course and opened a dress shop when she first graduated, a sense of style has always been her main inspiration whether in fashion or interiors. “I have

I like nothing more than transforming pieces of furniture with paint, wax, sandpaper and some new crystal knobs.” Nicholas, an art agent, naturally has a good trained eye and Annie explained they also have the same taste. “He has combined everything with a good sense of balance. For instance, I have always collected Kate Greenaway but the pieces always looked a bit of a mess until Nicholas rearranged them.” Annie warns that her kind of style attracts clutter and she has to keep it under control. “Every now and then I have a clear out and edit out the junk keeping only what I love. The rest goes to charity.” Full of money saving ideas, Annie used inexpensive embroidered voile panels at windows in the main bedroom and her guest room, and then combined them with white blinds. “People can spend a fortune on interlined curtains but in a small cottage like this, they would be particularly inappropriate.” Another radical saving that she suggested was to create a kitchen along continental lines with open shelves hidden behind pretty curtains. “The Italians keep a stock of winter and summer curtains just as some people in England have seasonal sofa covers or rugs. It is so much cheaper than having a fitted kitchen, which I find so boring and I can change the colour scheme any time I like.” l

This month, Flo Whitaker’s on the veg patch. If you’re new to veg growing, you can be sure of success with beans – and now’s the best time to plant them

EASY BEANS P

rovided you give them a sunny, sheltered site and fertile soil, runner beans are easy to cultivate. They’re quick-growing and vigorous, so put a strong support framework in place before setting out the plants. Using 8ft (240cms) garden canes, arrange two parallel rows of canes approximately 45cms apart, with 20cm spacings between each cane. Bury the canes at least 30cms deep to give sufficient anchorage. Push them into the ground at a slight angle so that each cane crosses its opposite partner about 30cms from the top. Tie each opposing pair together with twine. Place a cane horizontally along the ‘V’ shapes above the string ties and bind everything together. Finally, drive two more canes or tree stakes at the ends of the row and secure to the framework. Alternatively, a simple wigwamshaped support can be made using

canes arranged in circle and tied together at the top. As they climb, the plants will cast shade, inhibiting growth inside the wigwam, so crop yield will be reduced. However, wigwams have some advantages; they’re highly decorative, are quick to construct and can be fitted into awkward areas where there is insufficient space for rows. At this time of year, when there is minimal chance of frost, bean seeds can be sown direct outdoors but this method is not without risk as the emerging shoots are highly attractive to slugs and birds, so there is much to be said for raising plants in the controlled environment of a greenhouse or sunny windowsill. Sow seeds 5cms deep in individual 9cm pots - they’ll germinate within a week. ‘Tall’ pots specifically designed to accommodate their long, vigorous roots can be purchased - or make your own paper pots using a jam jar as a mould. When the plants reach 10-15cms high, set them into ground that has been enriched with

multipurpose fertiliser and water-retaining organic matter such as leaf mould or compost. Young plants may need tying in at first, but they’ll soon develop the climbing instinct. Runner beans come in seemingly endless varieties. Some produce flowers in dainty pink or white, while others have striking bi-coloured blooms. Tall varieties will easily attain 2 metres and are best ‘pinched out’ at the growing tip when they’ve reached the desired height. ‘Bush’ types such as ‘Hestia,’ (50cms) require just a few twiggy branches for support and do well in large patio pots or half barrels. If you ask me to name one vegetable I would not be without, the climbing French bean, ‘Cobra’, (150cms) gets my vote every time. Prolific, stringless and supertasty, it keeps on going until October, so if you’ve never grown beans before give ‘em a go! l

Garden Sage was born with the ethos of providing quality plants and sound horticultural advice. After five years and a recent move to a new home near Henfield, Robert Veitch went to see how far they’ve come

he knowledgeable folk at Garden Sage have been advising the gardeners of Sussex since 2016, and this spring they’ve moved home, to the outskirts of Henfield. “A new home, means a new beginning,” enthused owner Ed Nugent as we sat inside a polytunnel. “We’ve already welcomed lots of returning friends and customers, but it’s also great to see new faces from as far afield as Horsham and Brighton.” The new location is on the A287 between Henfield and Cowfold. It has plenty of onsite parking. Tea, coffee and cake are available in the car park at weekends from Mama Brew in their horsebox. Having only moved recently, Garden Sage is currently operating at a similar level to their previous site in Hassocks. But there’s plenty of room for organic expansion in the future at their new home. Garden Sage was started in 2016 by husband and wife team Ed and Josie Nugent. Just over a year ago they joined forces with Steve Bartram, a nursery owner from Albourne. “It was perfect timing,” smiled Steve. “It made a lot of

sense as I was already supplying plants to Ed and Josie.” The team grow what they can at their nursery otherwise they use UK suppliers wherever possible. The aim is to produce as much own grown stock as possible and broaden the range as they expand. Ed and Steve indicated that growing plants locally means they’re better suited to the local climate, meaning they have a greater chance of thriving in the gardens of Sussex. All plants sold by Garden Sage, whether home grown or brought in from other nurseries, hold a plant passport – an identifier as to their nursery of origin. This is vital for promoting good plant health and husbandry. Sustainability is also high on the agenda at Garden Sage. All the plants are grown peat free. Some of the plants on display at Garden Sage might be considered oddities and curiosities, but they hark back to the spirit of the bowler hat wearing Victorian and Edwardian plant hunters who searched in farflung places for interesting botanical specimens. “We retain their pioneering spirit,” observed Ed. “If you’re searching for something different, you’ll probably stumble across it here. We’re not a bog standard corporate garden centre, we’re a nursery with character.” If the plant that you are looking for isn’t in stock the team will do their best to source one for you. “We want you to plant your garden with the plants you want,” declared Ed. “We’ve found some really unusual things for people in recent years.” The eagerness among the Garden Sage team is infectious. Pierre Magnol’s Legacy The ancient magnolia plant dates back to the dinosaurs, and was named after the French botanist Pierre Magnol. With over 200 varieties listed, Peter Erridge explains their interesting backstory and the best ways to cultivate them in the gardens of Sussex

ossilised magnolia type plants dating back 95 million years have been found. Magnolias appeared before bees, leading the flowers to evolve for pollination by beetles. Their main centre of origin is South and East Asia with another group in eastern North America. Magnolia is the official flower of North Korea, the Gangnam district of South Korea, and the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai. The impressive magnolia flower is represented on the flag of the American state of Mississippi and is also the official flower of Louisiana. At their original sites many species are endangered where the plants are cut down for firewood or the land is cleared for food production. Magnolias are named after Pierre Magnol, an eminent 17th century French botanist and Professor of

Medicine. The National Collection is held in Cornwall where over 40 species of magnolia plus many hybrids are held. More locally, some of the finest examples can be found in gardens just outside Haywards Heath. Magnolias with their large white, pink or purple flowers first emerge in a tulip shape, gradually opening to a bowl or a star shape. The earliest flowers appear in March followed until mid-summer by other varieties. In favourable conditions there may be repeat blooming, on a lesser scale, even as late as October. Most have a fragrant aroma, which can best be appreciated by selecting low growing varieties. Many magnolias grow to over 20m (60ft) such as M. grandiflora, however in Sussex none is currently recorded as exceeding 13m (45ft) in height. This genus hybridises easily allowing the best aspects of different species to be selected to develop plants which are more suitable for modern gardens.

There are now over 200 varieties of magnolia; one online nursery lists 177 varieties, but local plant centres usually have a limited range of hybrids. Searching online for compact magnolias results in examples varying in size from M. laevifolia ‘minnie mouse’ at 1.25m (4ft) upwards. The white flowering M. denudata, ‘Lily tree’ which grows to 10m (33ft) has been hybridised to produce one example at 2m (7ft) with a red base to the flowers, two white types to 3m (10ft) and 6m (20ft), and a 10m (33ft) yellowish flower variety. M. Soulangeana 8m (26ft) has a hybrid ‘Lilliputian’ 3m (10ft). Many hybrids flower later than the parent species to reduce frost damage, and with more fragrant and impressive flowers. Older varieties of magnolia seldom bloom before they are 20 years old, the hybrids flower after 3-5 years but they need time to settle after planting before blooming.

Evergreen varieties develop into large trees, with the blooms often becoming submerged within the foliage. The majority of this species have deciduous foliage and some plants come into flower before any leaves appear, the bare branches carrying large blooms, which in good years create an impressive floral display resembling pink or white lollipops. However, the lack of foliage protection renders them liable to frost damage. Site selection is important. For best results magnolias should be planted where they will get partial or full sun and in fertile, humus rich moist but well drained soil, pH 6.5-7.5. The buds and flowers need shelter from cold winds. This can be provided by an adjacent wall or building. The evidence is that

Which Witch Is the Worst Witch? T

In the supernatural world, spells, incantations, rituals and magic are commonplace, though in the rational world these things take some explaining. Shaun Cooper offers a few thoughts and examples on the folklore of witchcraft in Sussex

here are over 60 places in Sussex with definite reports of witches, with the range of witch legends from across the county being both broad and interesting. Generally, Sussex witch legends are typical of those found across Britain. Many witches were reputed to be shape-changers and whimsical stories are commonplace. A witch from Duddleswell called Dame Garson could change into a hare when she wanted to spy on people. Although it might have been supposed that all witches could change their shape, only about a third of county witch legends feature that sort of thing. Yarns concerning witches who could immobilise horses and wagons also proved popular. Witches who immobilised horses and wagons, or wagons-and-teams, were believed to have used their sorcery at Albourne, Hurstpierpoint, Laughton, Wigperry, Plumpton, Ditchling, West Grinstead, Crowborough, Horsted Keynes, and Hadlow Down, to name but just a few locations. Belief in witchcraft lingered long in some of the more rural parts of Sussex, and so it has quite a few unusual witch legends – Old Martha, of Plumpton is a notable example. My favourite tale about Old Martha is the one Marcus Woodward recounts in The Mistress of Stanton’s Farm (1938) concerning the time she chased him down a hill, running backwards, and brandishing long knives. He also tells of an incident that occurred near East Chiltington. ‘A carter making a journey to Lewes on a dark night with a loaded wagon saw something spring up at the horse’s heads, by which they were thrown into a great fright, and how it turned into a hare which he struck with his whip, and how the hare then materialised into Old Martha.’ A very similar old tale was published in the Kent & Sussex Courier in 1932 about a Crowborough witch who leaped at the horses in the form of a black dog. An even earlier version

was recorded by Alice Catharine Day in 1927 in her book Glimpses of Rural Life in Sussex During the Last Hundred Years. This witch was named as Mrs. Weaver of Hadlow Down and the incident was said to have occurred near the Dudsland Paygate, on the modern day A267 between the villages of Cross-inHand and Five Ashes. What’s interesting about these tales is that the witch had already shape-changed when she attacked the horses. Although Sussex also has other examples, this curious hybrid of the two most popular types of witch legends is very rare – especially in the shires. Another unusual type of witch legend illustrates the uncanny laws prevailing during the death of a witch from old age. Nanny Smart became the notorious 18th century witch at Hurstpierpoint. Not only did she immobilise wagons-and-teams, but she also enjoyed bewitching civilians. It was reported, ‘She could not die unless someone bought the secrets of her life, and at last a man from Cuckfield bought them for a half-penny, and she died in a blue flame!’ Similarly, Witch Killick of Crowborough could not die, old though she was, until her witch-spirit ways had passed to somebody else, someone who was preferably one of her kin. When her time was upon her, Witch

Dr. P. Habberton Lulham, writing in Sussex County Magazine in 1939, noted, ‘The belief in witchcraft is by no means dead yet, and in many Sussex villages I have been told that the witch’s malevolence is directed mainly against farm horses.’ And in Sussex Ways and Byways, (1969), Cecile Woodford writes, ‘Superstitions linger longer in Sussex than most other counties. Even today the belief in witchcraft and ill-wishing has not entirely faded out.’ Cecile Woodford also notes that over Crowborough way a supernatural

‘pack of hounds still pursue an old witch in the guise of a hare.’ This may be similar to the phenomenon known as The Witch Hounds, sometimes heard around Ditchling Beacon in the summer, and here described from a report in the Mid Sussex Times, in May 1933. ‘Suddenly the wind rose and the shepherd raised a hand in warning. Faintly at first, but growing in intensity, there came the sound of a hunt in full cry – the thud of hoof-beats, the short, excited yelping of the hounds, and the call of a hunting horn. The sounds grew louder and louder till they seemed to

be just above us. In recent years the roads have become populated with mamils (middle aged men in lycra), pounding the tarmac on road bikes, covering a vast number of miles, keeping fit and loving every second of it. Off road routes remain the playground of the casual cyclist and training ground for young pedallers. The

Forest Way, Cuckoo Trail, Worth Way, Downs Link, and the South Downs Way are all bike compatible and freely available. Venues like Friston Forest, Rye Harbour, Bedgebury, St. Leonard’s Forest and Tilgate Forest all offer a variety of routes. CROWBOROUGH WALK We thought for a change, we would allow our resident rambler Robert Veitch to come up with something on his own patch. Make it go past your house we said, find some bluebells we asked. He succeeded with one and got within 50m of the other. Happy wandering!

rom the car park, wander down the ramp, past Montargis Terrace, to the junction with Croft Road. Turn left and continue through the High Street to the traffic lights. Cross over, turning right and downhill, walking past the parade of shops, then past Batchelor Crescent and High Cross Fields, continuing along the pavement once the hedge separates it from the road. The path turns 90° left and continues past the car park and skate park. Across the road and through the gap in the hedge, turn left and follow the path along the topside of the running track to the exercise

The path emerges into a field of young wheat, leading straight as a ruler to a 4-way fingerpost. Continue past the fingerpost, easing downhill, alongside the stream to the junction with the bridge. Turn right, and take the concrete track uphill, veering left at the fingerpost. At the tarmac, the path angles left by a fingerpost, down a small bank and across another wheat field, then along its’ periphery to a kissing gate. Follow the path through the woods, but do not stray from it, there is a chance to sneak a peak at Hamsell Lake by the barrier. Continue to the traffic

WHY BALANCE & POSTURE MATTER Standing tall might make us feel more confident but as Lisa de Silva explains, there are multiple benefits to our health and body from taking control of our body posture

t some point in our lives most of us will have been told to ‘Stand up straight!’ And while we might have rolled our eyes at this request, it is actually great advice. For posture not only affects our ability to balance but is also essential to our general health and wellbeing. Posture is defined as the body’s position when standing, sitting, lying down or performing movements including lifting, twisting and bending. Central to good posture is the position of your spine. There are three curves in the spine: the neck; the middle back and the lower back. The aim is to maintain these curves without lengthening them, creating what is known as a ‘neutral’ spine. This is achieved by keeping your chin parallel to the floor, your shoulders, hips and knees in alignment, your abdominal muscles flexed and your weight evenly distributed across both feet. Poor posture can affect our balance resulting in falls and injuries, particularly among the elderly. More generally, it can lead to tension headaches, backache, fatigue, increased wear on joints and joint pain, along with impaired

HERE ARE OUR TOP TIPS TO IMPROVE POSTURE AND BALANCE 1 Be aware of your posture and check regularly throughout the day that your body is aligned and relaxed. 2 Try workouts, such as Pilates and yoga, that increase your core strength and improve your flexibility. 3 Build general muscle strength with a programme of resistance training. 4 Book a session with a physiotherapist or personal trainer to ensure you appreciate what good posture feels like and that you have the correct form when exercising. 5 Practise standing on one leg to help

You can make this harder by closing your eyes. 6 Invest in a wobble board or gym ball and practise balancing several times a day. 7 Step-ups can also help to improve hip stability and strengthen knees. Simply, step up with your right leg and bring your left leg up to join it in a slow and controlled manner, alternating the leading leg. 8 Ensure your working environment is as ergonomically friendly as possible and try to get up to stretch at least once every hour.

INGREDIENTS 4 x 150g (5oz) salmon fillets (skinned and boned) 100g (3oz) low-fat garlic and herb soft cheese Drizzle of vegetable oil Pinch of salt and black pepper

Topping 30g (1oz) fresh white breadcrumbs 30g (1oz) mature Cheddar cheese, grated 2 tbsp fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped 1 lime, finely grated zest

METHOD Place the salmon fillets on a lightly oiled baking sheet and season with salt and pepper. Spread the soft cheese on the top of each fillet keeping it away from the edges.

To Serve Lemon wedges Flat-leaf parsley sprigs

Mix together the topping 2 ingredients, add salt and black pepper seasoning to

taste, then sprinkle on the top of each salmon fillet. (This can be prepared ahead and kept covered in the refrigerator for up to 12 hours.) Pre-heat the oven to 220°C 3 (425°F, Gas 7) and bake for 15-20 minutes until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily. Garnish with slices of lemon and fresh parsley.

with Easy Hollandaise

Sauce

The perfect partners; offering a combination of texture and taste, an ideal companion to salmon or steak. Adele Trathan’s Hollandaise sauce is easy to make because it uses oil, which means it can be reheated without spoiling, or served at room temperature INGREDIENTS 625g (1¼lb) asparagus 1 lemon, sliced to garnish Pinch of salt and black pepper Easy Hollandaise 1 egg 125g (4oz) butter, melted 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 100 ml (3fl oz) vegetable oil Salt and black pepper METHOD Remove and discard any woody ends of the asparagus. In a pan, large enough to lay the spears flat, simmer gently in shallow water for 3-4 minutes until the asparagus is tender but still firm.

Meanwhile, put the egg 2 and white wine vinegar into a tall container and mix together using a hand blender.

Slowly add the melted 3 butter, while blending all the time. Add the oil in

the same way until the sauce becomes thick and creamy. Season with salt and pepper. Serve at room 4 temperature with asparagus and lemon to

garnish. If it’s preferred, the sauce can be warmed gently first.

Berry Parfait ‘Parfait’ means ‘perfect’ in French and this recipe by Adele Trathan is quick and easy, as well as eye-catching and delicious

INGREDIENTS 250g (9oz) frozen raspberries or mixed berries, defrosted with the juice reserved 125g (4oz) mascarpone cheese 100ml (3fl oz) double cream 50g (1½oz) caster sugar 4 ready-made supermarket meringue nests 4 scoops of vanilla ice cream

METHOD In a clean bowl add the cream, sugar, mascarpone and reserved berry juice. Beat to a smooth consistency.

LOCKDOWN DOGS I n 2020 there was a 62% increase in the number of enquiries Dogs Trust received from people wanting to adopt a dog. With families spending more time together at home during lockdown, it is understandable that this would seem like a good time to get a pet. However, with restrictions beginning to lift, we would advise potential owners to think about postlockdown life and whether they will be able to cope with the demands of having a dog. Originally, we anticipated around 40,000 dogs would be at risk of being abandoned because of the pandemic. While the extension of furlough and lockdown has kept many of us at home, we have not yet experienced a huge influx of ‘lockdown puppies’ coming into our care, however the full effects of the pandemic are yet to be felt. We are already starting to see signs of this as more dogs come into our care as their owners return to the workplace and spend more time away from home, while others have lost their job and can no

Living in a household of ‘lockdown learners’ has made Teddy determined to show he can also demonstrate his own practiced skills, as pawed by his human translator, Helen Stockton

here is a saying that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but I’m not sure why advancing in years means you can’t learn fresh things. Not that I’m an old dog myself you understand. I’m not even in double figures yet, and my predecessor, Rolo, lived to over sixteen, so I’m barely middle-aged. This is a status that I share with ‘Her Indoors’ although ‘barely’ is not an adverb I’d attach to her mid-life designation. During the prolonged spells of lockdown, people have been busy learning new things regardless of their age. Amongst our acquaintance there has been sign-language, guitar playing, DIY, bread making, bee keeping, wet felt making and wild water swimming. Quite impressive really. Since I’ve been living with ‘Them Indoors’ I have demonstrated some previously unseen skills. Because they rehomed me however, they don’t know if these are new skills or ones I’ve had before that I’ve been keeping quiet. For example, 128 SUSSEX LIVING | May 2021

I’m very good at walking upright on my back legs. This is very useful when I want to get to something on a table top – what can I tell you I’m a small dog. I am also good at spinning a toy around really quickly. ‘Them Indoors’ are surprised it doesn’t make me dizzy but I’m like a ballerina and keep my eyes on a fixed spot. I am very gentle at taking treats from people’s fingers, unlike Rolo, who would take your fingers too if you weren’t careful. I’ve found that being respectful of people’s digital integrity means that that you

are more likely to be offered a further treat. I’m not just a pretty face! ‘Her Indoors’ has returned to university to do some more studying so she’s clearly learning new things too. There has been a lot of huffing and puffing over her computer so I’m guessing her grey cells are feeling a bit stretched. I just keep her company and bring her a tuggy toy if I feel she needs some non-screen based distraction. ‘Him Indoors’ has been taking art classes so he can be found at his easel with his pencils and paper, squinting at some object and trying to capture its likeness. I’ve tried sitting nicely, directly in his line of vision, but so far, he hasn’t taken the hint. Now of course, I have an apprentice of my own, with the arrival of young Bear in our lives. She’s been busy learning the basics, like where to wee and how to sleep during the night, but I’m sure she’s got potential for more interesting stuff over time. I’ll see if I can enlighten her so just watch this space; new tricks can be fun for dogs of all ages! l

FOSTER CARE FORTNIGHT: Foster Care Fortnight takes place from May 10th-23rd and West Sussex County Council is using the national event to celebrate its fantastic carers and promote the real need for more foster carers in West Sussex as Stephen Pickthall explains

he theme is #WhyWeCare and the Council will be promoting the incredible role its foster carers play in supporting children in our care, a role which is needed more than ever after 12 months of the pandemic. Since the start of the pandemic, more and more people have been finding out about becoming a foster carer with West Sussex County Council. However, while enquiries have gone up, sadly the number of children who have come into care in West Sussex has risen too. Clare Spencer, Service Lead for Fostering at West Sussex County Council said, “It’s really positive that more people are finding out about fostering as a result of the pandemic. However, the reality is more children are also coming into our care. The need for people to foster in West Sussex has never been higher and we would love to hear from people who want to make a difference.” It usually takes between 4-6 months to go through the training and become

an approved foster carer. In the last year 23 households became approved carers with West Sussex County Council and are now supporting a child or children. WHY DO WORKERS IN THE DENTAL INDUSTRY STUFF YOUR MOUTH FULL OF IRONMONGERY, RENDERING YOU LITERALLY SPEECHLESS, THEN START A CONVERSATION? BECAUSE THEY CAN, THAT’S WHY. NEVER MIND – JUST BE GRATEFUL THEY’RE PREPARED TO DO SUCH A REVOLTING JOB, SAYS FLO WHITAKER “Does this hurt?” enquired the relentlessly cheerful dental hygienist as she vigorously poked my gum with something resembling a giant barbecue skewer. I wanted to reply, “Well, it didn’t …until you did that,” but “Arrgggh!” was all I managed as the hygienist also seemed to be holding my tonsils in a vice-like grip. “Oooh! You’ve got some inflammation there!” she continued, gleefully stabbing away. “Gotta floss, floss, floss!” Her words were delivered with snappy rhythm; like a tyrannical ballroom dancing instructor issuing orthodontic advice. Swapping the skewer for a tool with the power of an industrial orbital sander, she enthusiastically commenced buffing and polishing, pausing to comment on the apparently unusual fact that I still have a full complement of wisdom teeth. Clearly impressed, she decided to take a closer look; leaning precariously with one knee practically on my chest. Until that point, I hadn’t realised the rules governing dentistry and snooker are much the same; gymnastics are permitted – providing you always keep one foot on the floor. Other topics of our ‘chat’ included the “nightmare” of Internet supermarket shopping, the chances of booking a holiday this summer and “frankly, right now I’d commit murder for a haircut.” I eventually found myself out on the pavement, fifty quid poorer and bewilderedly wondering why everything seemed so dark, (having forgotten to remove the complimentary sunglasses). I’ve never understood the appeal of dentistry as a career and, thanks to Covid-19, that hygienist now spends her workdays clad in sweaty PPE gear. I hope she gets her holiday.
