INTRODUCTION

It’s time to step up!

As a young boy I always said I wanted to be like my father. I felt the same love for engineering as he did and, together, we also grew our shared passion for sustainability.

Take a step to a safer and more sustainable world

In this ‘BRENDAN’ I wanted to clarify my ideal vision, not only for myself though also for the reader of this magazine; friends, family and business contacts. I am convinced that if everyone takes care of their share in sustainability, we will make the world a better place to live. For ourselves, though more importantly for our children and the generations to come. When traveling around the world, I notice that people often point at someone else when it comes to sustainability. It is time to step up and take responsibility for OUR world. As the design and production of Vlentec’s vacuum pipe lifters strongly go hand in hand with my personal philosophy on sustainability, we as a company hope to encourage and motivate others to also make a small step in the right direction. The family I grew up in made me the person I am today. Together we traveled the world and whilst doing so we shared ideas and learned from one another. The trust we have in each other and our partners, suppliers and stakeholders, make us the strongest and most reliable team we are today. In this magazine you will read the experiences we had together on both personal and professional level. I extend gratitude to my family, friends and business contacts who were willing to share their stories. You have greatly contributed to making this magazine a success. I hope that when reading through this magazine, it inspires you too in taking a step forward towards a safer and more sustainable world. I am always available for contact if you feel I could play a role in YOUR step forward, as small or large it may be.

You live, you learn... 2003

Learning the tricks of trade At the age of 13 I started buying, repairing and selling on mopeds for a profit. This was one of my first experences in making money with a hobby.

1988

1999

2008

Young and brave In 1988 I was born the third child in a family of seven in Perth, Western Australia. This was also the year that my father Klaas Boelema invented the self-contained vacuum lifter, a device that changed the way pipes are handled. When I was five, the company (VacuumLift Australia) grew and we moved with it. Moving to a property where we had our house in front of the 575m2 factory. I loved to help with the vacuum lifters every day after school. I developed a strong technical interest. At the age of 10 my parents wanted to make the most of my interest in engineering. I was given additional technical schooling at the Guildford Gramma private school.

66

Reset Moving around the globe When my parents sold their company we moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA for half a year. Tulsa is well known as the trial grounds for new fast food meals and restaurants. Graduating in elementary school in the USA completed the full American dream experience. For me this time was one great adventure. After living in the USA, we moved the Netherlands, my parents’ home country. We settled in a small city called Emmen, near the German boarder. Emmen has a good manufacturing industry, the local people are down to earth and hard workers. This is also the city where I now live and our company is based.

My first year of University was one with lots of fun and socializing. However this lead to a major setback. Only after defending myself to the school committee, I received sufficient points to continue studying. However I decided to take a gap year and move back to Australia. In Australia I worked for a construction company, building apartment buildings. This was an eyeopener for me, giving me better insight to where I want to go to in the future. In 2009, after returning to the Netherlands, I continued to study for a Mechanical Engineering degree and put the majority of my time in studying to eventually graduate with high scores.

2010

MY LIFE

The joy of sharing I was always eager to find someone to enjoy the world with me. But that someone had to be the right person. The day I met Ilse she intrigued me in a way that I knew she was the perfect partner. Ilse is a very outgoing person, when possible she travels with me. Together we visit congresses and trade shows and we enjoy interacting with others.

2009

Part of the company For many years I worked weekends and school holidays at Vlentec, however in 2009 I officially got a job as a general labourer at Vlentec. In the beginning my main tasks were to assemble vacuum pipe lifters and also service used equipment.

Into the future: introducing efficiency Within the International Pipeline and Offshore Contractors Association (IPLOCA) I took the opportunity to present the next big revolution in vacuum pipe lifting with the step to electric powered units. This presentation was held during a conference in Berlin in front of hundreds of pipeliners. I am proud to help our industry make steps towards a more sustainable future.

2013

Change for the good During my Bachelor degree Mechanical Engineering I was asked by the school director to become a member of the student board. I was an active member and was involved in many different consultations. Some of these included monthly school board meetings, student union meetings, debates with the Royal Institute for Engineers (KIVI) as well as a debate with the Dutch minister of Education Ronald Plasterk. Besides being active on the boards, I was also a teachers assistant for the subject ‘Drive Technologies’.

2011

Temporarily clipped wings A day before I was going to travel to Chile to commission vacuum lifters, I was hospitalized due to a spontaneous collapsed long. The doctors did not trust I would fly so I was requested to stay in the hospital. Due to being a frequent flyer the safest and fastest way I could fly again was to undergo surgery and have my long glued to my chest. The day after the 6 week recovery period I boarded a plane again.

My father and I had bigger plans with our company. Together we updated the vacuum lifters with the most reliable and efficient technology to bring the product to the highest standards. Our company became member of pipeline and oil and gas associations and to date I actively engage in these associations to provide technically supported advice to assist pipeline contractors.

A passport identifies you, giving you a name, place of birth and a country you can call home. This document gives you the ability to travel the globe and meet different cultures, taste different food, do business in different ways. For me my passports are my freedom, taking away borders.

My second nationality is the Netherlands, a nationality that I was lucky to be given at the age of 11. I have a strong connection to the country, not only because it is where my house stands but also because it’s where my family and friends reside. The Netherlands is a country of joy and strong social bonding.

Being a holder of two nationalities gives me two countries to call home. Australia is where I was born and grew up until half way through my youth. Deep down it is the country I feel most attached to and enjoy to visit. I see my Australian passport as a passport to paradise, because that’s what Australia surely is.

Needing to travel almost two-thirds of the year expands my home from outside these two distant countries. As soon as the wheels of the plane touchdown the country I arrive in becomes my home. Arriving in Saudi Arabia, the Arab side of me comes in to play. I feast with the local Saudi’s around a shared bowl of rice and camel meat and respect the local

traditions. Visiting Chile unfolds into an experience of hot desert, ice cold snow and forests. It is a country you can experience any type of weather with the joy of being amongst open and caring people. For every county in the world, adapting to the local culture and tradition is a must and is a part of my attitude. It was something I grew up with, my parents took me to the United States of America for half a year. And at the age of 18, I temporaraly moved back to Australia on my own. I feel every country as my home and therefore I would not call myself an Australian or a Dutchman, a CITIZEN OF THE WORLD is what describes me best.

Entrepreneurship Well before I was born my father was an entrepreneur, starting off with a steel works engineering company. From 1982 he ran a company manufacturing vacuum pipe lifters. Until 1999 the company was located in our back yard, therefore as a child I grew up in the factory and noticed many of the aspects that come with owning a company.

We rise

by lifting others

(and pipes)

From the age of 13 I had my first paid job delivering door-to-door flyers. At the age of 14 I bought my first of many mopeds which I repaired and resold for a profit. Bringing technical work together with a commercial business was a hobby I enjoyed for many years. This was a small margin hobby and did not cover the costs of living so I always had a job on de side of studying. However the extra effort that I put into my side jobs was not always appreciated to the level I hoped or seen by my employer. At the age of 20 I officially became an employee at Vlentec, my father’s company. Within less than 2 years my position changed from manufacturing, assembling and commissioning vacuum lifters to a more commercial side including sales. In the beginning years I was involved in all the steps from manufacturing, assembly, delivery and commissioning. A satisfying process of which my efforts resulted in positive and rewarding outcomes. My father has a true beta personality; technical, down to earth and honest however less of a commercial personality. Becoming a part of Vlentec gave me the drive to invest all of my energy in the company to make the best of its potential. My focus is to make Vlentec a reliable and honest brand that is noticed by any company involved in pipe handling.

Contributing to a sustainable world

Sustainability is in my perspective lasting, efficient and minimal to no impact on the environment. Our world has an increasing focus on sustainability and it is something I have always enjoyed studying. When buying my first house, the new windows I fitted were of one of the highest grade insulation classes. Within a year I fitted the roof with Solar(PV) cells, more than sufficient to cover my electricity bill even though my roof was not ideal which resulted in a long return of investment. The idea is to reduce my carbon footprint and also reduce my cost of living on the long term.

Within Vlentec we have a strong focus on sustainability. Our factory is highly insulated, lighting is by LED and the roof is covered with Solar cells to compensate our electricity consumption. All Vlentec’s company vehicles are fully electric powered (from forklift to cars) and employees are encouraged to drive with electric cars by offering free charging. Our products have also been designed with sustainability in mind. The diesel powered units have a custom designed engine to eliminate inefficient gearboxes. From 2012 we have started testing various electric powered vacuum lifters and in 2017 we officially introduced the electric vacuum pipe lifter that runs off the excavator’s battery or from an intergrated battery. This change has not only resulted in less emissions though also less maintenance, less noise, lower running costs and s safer and healthier working environment for staff near the equipment. Even for countries where sustainability is not as important as in the Netherlands, our sustainable electric vacuum lifters are the most logical and cost efficient vacuum lifters for any company handling pipes. I feel proud we can contribute to making the world a little bit more sustainable every day! Brendan Magazine 99

Electric vacuum pipe lifter The zero emission vacuum pipe lifter with the lowest Total Cost of Ownership

The concept of the current vacuum pipe lifter, the self-contained vacuum lifter dates back to 1988. The idea of the design is to have an easy to interchange vacuum lifter that can be fitted to any excavator or crane. It is driven by its own diesel or petrol engine which in general is rather noisy and pollutant. From 2011 we have been studying other drive methods for the vacuum pipe lifter. Electric drive is our preferred method as it is efficient and clean. However, there were many hurdles to pass to present a simple and reliable machine for use in rural areas.

First electric prototype

Second electric prototypes

In 2012 the first electric prototype was field-tested. I spent many weeks on a pipeline project in the Netherlands to finetune the prototype and find any flaws in the technical design. This unit had a limited lifting capacity of 7.000kg and was powered by a interchangable battery pack. The test clearly showed positive results, the vacuum lifter could handle 600 pipes without needing to be recharged. However, the unit would be far more practical if it did not need recharging. Redesigning the vacuum lifter to an electric unit changed practically all components in the vacuum lifter. Together with suppliers we made every single part ideal for rough field use. However the experience we won in the process of redesigning our vacuum lifters also lead to many safety and reliability improvements to the other products in we offer.

The second two prototype units received the power from the excavator’s battery and alternator. This eliminated the requirement of operators to charge the unit. The two test units went to Australia and the United Kingdom for longer testing in different environments. The electric prototypes proved to be far easier to use than a combustion engine vacuum lifter. The electric motor eliminates the use of a vibrating, noisy and emission emitting combustion engine with less wear and tear. Electric drive is not only maintenance free, it is also easy to regulate. The vacuum pump starts, stops and runs at regulated rpms depending on the level of vacuum required in the vacuum tank.

Lowest Total Cost Of Ownership

Safety

Field experience shows us that the pump’s running hours are reduced up to 90%, extending the pump’s maintenance intervals and reducing maintenance costs by the same factor. Eliminating the combustion engine also eliminates refuelling, air and fuel filter replacement and engine oil replacement. The electric motor is maintenance free. The increased reliability of the electric drive results in further productivity and less chance of downtime. All Ventec’s vacuum pipe lifters have recently been equipped with further improvements to reduce the TCO including: - 2 stage air filtrations of which the first stage is equipped with an air filter that can be blown or washed clean and never requires replacement. - Maintenance free vacuum valve. - Extra durable rubber seal, which we specially developed for pipe lifting and fitted in a smooth profile to improve the seal life. - No gearboxes or belts are used between the motor/engine and pump. Resulting in less energy loss and maintenance.

The silent vacuum pipe lifter increases site safety as warning systems are better heard and staff can communicate with ease. The vacuum lifter does not emit emissions or require refuelling resulting in a healthier working environment. With the electrification of the vacuum pipe lifters, mechanical components have been replaced by digital components such as vacuum pressure switches and controllers. This switches the status lights and alarms on and off more precisely. The operator can also read the vacuum pressure on his remote control handset. This eliminates the need to focus on the lifter mounted vacuum gauges. As with all Vlentec vacuum pipe lifters the alarm system runs on individual 24Vdc power supply. In case of loss of power from the excavator, the backup batteries will ensure the safety systems work in all circumstances and there will be enough vacuum available in the large tank.

Family business Entrepreneurship is part of our family DNA. The year I was born was also the year in which my father invented the self-contained vacuum lifter, a device that changed the way of pipe lifting around the world. In a way, the company and I grew up together. I grew up in large family of five siblings, you could imagine there was always some action going on. My loving mother put order in the chaos and was the tower of strength in our family home. Our home in Australia was located in the same lot as the factory, where my father was always working on improvements to the machine. They say home is where the heart is. For our family of seven, this has always been intertwined with our family business: home is where our company is. That’s how we thrive together. Growing up you could often find me in the factory, doing all sorts of chores and work. I enjoyed spending my time there. My love for anything technical was born there. To enhance my skills, I took extra technical courses at a private school. When my parents sold their company to an American company, we moved to the United States of America where he taught the new owner the tips of trade. For me this was my first major international experience that meant a lot to me. At school I became the centre of attention with my Australian accent, sometimes it was a bit too much attention for me. But there were many typical American experiences that I enjoyed. They say home is where One is building rockets at school and shooting them up in the sky. the heart is. Also, the tremendous amounts of restaurants the US had to offer was an amusement park for my taste buds. After this amazing six For our family of seven, month experience, we all moved to the Netherlands.

this has always been intertwined with our family business: home is where our company is.

Shortly after we moved back to the Netherlands my father opened a new factory. He manufactured vacuum pipe lifters for the American company for about two years. This was a bigger change for me as we had to learn a new language. As a child it was quite easy to learn a new language and adapt to a new culture. The Dutch people also speak a little English, which was helpful when struggling to express myself in a new language. The weather in the Netherlands was a quite big shock though. In Australia I was able to wear shorts all year long but unfortunately the wet, cold and grey weather in the Netherlands brought that to an end.

We did not have the factory on the same lot as our house in the Netherlands. Having an industrial company near a house is quite difficult to get approved as industrial areas are clearly divided from residential areas in the Netherlands. The new facility my father built was just 8 minutes by car from where we lived. Or at that time, more importantly for me, about 10 minutes by bicycle.

COLUMN

In a way, the company and I grew up together.

I have always had the urge to be able to stand on my own two feet. On my 13th birthday, before I was officially allowed to work, I delivered door to door flyers. At that time, I also started repairing and trading mopeds. Followed by working in a rose greenhouse, supermarket, hardware store and a car rental company. I was determined in becoming financially independent and for sure did not want to live off pocket money which I received from my parents. Besides having various part time jobs, I still spent quite some time in my father’s factory. Either welding things together for fun or helping to assemble equipment and load sea containers. I was intrigued by the diversity of work my father did and with the amount of passion he did it with. On my 18th when I moved back to Australia to determine where I wanted to live, I got the first real experience of true independence. Being on the other side of the world far from friends and family I had to make sure I could cover the costs of living. Within a matter of weeks, I found a job as labourer for an apartment construction company. In my spare time I followed various training courses and looked for new opportunities. Working on construction sites and comparing them to the way things went in the Netherlands, I noticed that there could be a large need for mobile construction cranes in Australia. These cranes were not to be found in Australia. The new trend of building upwards plus the large amount of above ground powerlines made a mobile (truck mounted) tower crane a safe and efficient alternative when comparing to a traditional telescopic crane. I wrote a business plan to start a rental company with these tower cranes. The plan never became reality. After six months down under I decided to move back to friends and family in the Netherlands. My main goal was to finish my university degree that I started in the Netherlands before moving to Australia. After returning from Australia in 2009 I worked for Vlentec on a part time contract base and studied Mechanical Engineering. In 2011 my father was diagnosed with cancer therefore I stepped up in the company. At that time, it was not fully clear if and when my father would recover but growing up next to Vlentec I knew how important it was for my father that the company kept going on. Luckily the odds were on his side and he is healthy again, putting all his time and energy into the company. In 2016 50% of the company’s shares we transferred to me and I was officially pronounced as the CEO of the company. My father and I run the company together, we are a strong team and complement each other’s pitfalls. Our collaboration has led to a strong and healthy growth of the company, year after year. Together with the growth of the company we have also been able to include more family members to Vlentec. In 2016 my youngest brother joined us for manufacturing and assembling the equipment. He is now also our main operator trainer, traveling around the world to commission the vacuum lifters. Just recently my sister joined the team as Executive Assistant. With her experience working at management level for a large international company, she will be supporting us with our company’s future goals.

I was gifted with my father’s drive to make a technical idea reality. And added a bit of my commercial side to share our father’s legacy with the world.

‘He has an open mind and a friendly personality’

Back in 1993, when our son Brendan (Mannes) was 5 years old, someone asked him what he intended to be or do as a grown-up. The clear answer from this little Australian boy was: I want to do the same thing as my father does. Happy to say now that he hasn’t changed his mind. He runs the business (better) than his father did. And he does it with great enthusiasm and dedication. When I became seriously ill, first in 2011 and again in 2015, Brendan was still studying for his Bachelor of Science title. He managed to combine studying and

As a son he is a caring and helpful young man. As a business partner he is an inspiring stimulator and keeps me young at heart.

Brendan gets the job done. He does things on time. He is an - out of the box - thinker. He keeps me happy and spirited. I am blessed and thankful that I have the opportunity to have him around.

Brendan now has his own family to keep him sane. When my wife and I talk about whom did he get his helpful attitude from, we agree that he got his spirit and positivity from his grandfather Mannes. We remember that great man for being

Brendan is very professional, and has extensive knowledge of the pipeline industry. During the establishment in the Netherlands in 2001 we started to work close with his father/founder Klaas, and found them very knowledgeable and dedicated to the job all over the world. They have shown exellent business results with high customer satisfaction, from Saudi Arabia up to Thailand. Brendan is a hands on people person and an amazing individual te be associated with both professionally and personally. I have enjoyed working with him! Brendan is very effective and skilled in delivering the right value to the customer in the pipeline industry. He has an open mind and a very friendly personallity! And last but not least: works with a smile.

Brendan and I first met when he was at the age of 14. Brendan was always busy with all kinds of projects, mostly technically related. He is curious to the unknown and always seeks activities which challenge him. For example at a young age refurbishing old motorcycles, renovating bathrooms or installing solar panels. These characteristics are what created his passion for the Vlentec organization. A perfect example is when Brendan designed the first ever battery-driven vacuum lifter together with his father, from which Brendan inherited his technical talent.

I am convinced that Brendan’s motivation is not driven by selling the most vacuum lifters, though by leading the way in technical innovation and providing the best quality lifters on the market. He is a transparent person who stands fully behind his products. Another trait worth mentioning is that Brendan is very service-oriented. This shows in his personal approach towards his customers and clients. Each new inquiry is unique and requires tailormade advice. Brendan is capable of leaping into the minds of his stakeholders and providing the best fit solutions. He is

always available to provide assistance and advice during the process of product use as well. Overall, I can state that Brendan is a very likeable person with a genuine passion and talent for technique and for the Vlentec company.
