A SEASONAL SHIFT

many of us have experienced change lately, and we must recognize the past in order to move forward. So, as we thaw from a frigid winter, change will occur. I always remember my high school dean of students saying that as spring approached, we tended to play our music louder as if to make the flowers grow faster in a New Hampshire spring. We may need music and other elements to make the snow thaw for our Sun Valley flowers to pop this spring!

This year’s Sun Valley Film Festival (SVFF) will be honoring the producer to help usher in a change of season. SVPN Magazine, a founding media sponsor of SVFF, offers more than 30 pages of content to discuss what is happening, who is coming, and what is screening for 2023. Read about Vision Award recipient Josh Brolin, Variety’s ‘10 Producers to Watch,’ and standout films not to miss among the many events and happenings at this year’s beloved Festival. LORI WILLIAMS is a freelance writer, copy editor, former home-educator, and native Idahoan who’s lived in Ketchum for 35 years. Also a poet, she records family histories and stories writing in rhyme, and is a self-published children’s book author. When not road-tripping with her husband, she manages a handful of private Valley properties, hikes and bikes, journals, and drinks a ton of green tea.

MARTHA WILLIAMS is a freelance writer who’s lived in the Wood River Valley since 2009. A native of Arkansas, she found her home in Idaho after moving out West to work for a summer in Stanley. She’s held positions around the Valley and currently can be found at The Community Library in Ketchum when she’s not reading or out on the trails.

Originally from Connecticut, LILY MARTIN attended Gettysburg College, studying studio art and art history. She has a master’s degree in modern/contemporary art and the market. In 2020, she left Christie’s Auction House in New York for Ketchum. Calling Sun Valley home, she works at Gail Severn Gallery. Embracing the outdoors and learning to love camping, she spends her free time skiing, hiking, and with friends at the lake, in the river, or on the Grumpy’s patio.

EMILY SHARP is a freelance writer and editor from New York City. She produces a weekly Substack newsletter called Emily For President, and, most importantly, she’s trying to be funnier on Twitter.

ELIZABETH WESTWOOD

is a producer based in Austin, Texas. SVMOA KE TCHUM MAKES IMPROVEMENTS

SVMoA’s Ketchum location temporarily closes for maintenance while Hailey Classroom remains open

The Sun Valley Museum of Art in Ketchum’s current building has some maintenance issues that need addressing. In the review of those updates, the Museum seized an opportunity to make some much-needed improvements to the galleries and public spaces as well. As a result, the SVMoA Ketchum galleries will be closed for renovation this spring.

The official closure dates are March 21-June 23, 2023. SVMoA in Ketchum will reopen for its summer show on June 23, 2023. These modifications will expand the SVMoA exhibition space by 25%, allowing the Museum to serve the community better.

“One of the most significant things that drew me to SVMoA is its rich and long history of supporting artists and fostering opportunities to explore the power of creativity,” says SVMoA Executive Director Jennifer Wells. “This is the heart of what it means to be a contemporary art museum—to engage and support meaningful exchanges with art, artists, and ideas. Through our exhibitions and programs—including concerts, lectures, and film series—SVMoA sparks curiosity and creative conversations about the pressing issues of our time that artists help us all understand better.”

The changes are modest in scope, yet they will significantly impact the visitor experience. While the Ketchum location is temporarily closed, SVMoA will offer a slate of classes, workshops, and programming at its Hailey Classroom location. In addition, concerts will continue to be held at The Argyros, including Parlour in the Round on Friday, April 17, at 7:30 pm.

A musical game show, Parlour in the Round features Alaskan songwriters paired with nationally touring artists to trade tunes, stories, and songwriting homework in the first half. After intermission, tradition is cast aside as the musicians dive into collaborations, jocular interventions, and premeditated musings based on written submissions from the audience. The Ketchum performance will feature Korby Lenker and Barbara Lica.

Korby Lenker is an award-winning American folk singersongwriter and author of short stories who is a native of Twin Falls, Idaho, and now resides in Nashville. Barbara Lica is a Canadian jazz singer and songwriter in Toronto. She was named one of Canada’s top upcoming female jazz artists and received her first Juno Award nomination in 2017 for Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.

Our town is big enough for both of us

Friction between longtime locals and seasonal visitors is an inevitable trope of resort communities all over the map. The pandemic migration amplified this clash as crowds decided to stick around after the holidays, and tourists became full-time residents. Here in Sun Valley, our small town saw a large influx of people, primarily from California, Oregon, and Washington. This meant learning to share the once-empty trails and campsites and waiting a little longer for the chairlift or dinner table. However, the secret is out on the spoils of this valley, which has proven to come with a fair share of growing pains. Behaviors and attitudes that may have served someone in the city don’t necessarily match the customs or pace at which we operate around these parts. Luckily, “Stay Sunny” is here to help ease the tension with a savvy campaign welcoming newcomers while reminding them to chill out.

Destination management and marketing organization

Visit Sun Valley teamed up with a creative agency, Two Things, to develop “Stay Sunny.” This movement declares its mission as “reminding visitors to be patient with, kind to, and respectful of our community and its workers with a collective voice of the community: its servers, bartenders, cops, hoteliers, young townies, aging lifers, celebrities, and regular Joes. It’s also to encourage our locals to show the welcoming spirit that makes this place so special. We are one community, bound by a common goal: to love and protect Sun Valley.” Rather than nagging or criticizing, Stay Sunny takes a bold approach, implementing humor and charm to get the message across. Over the past year and a half, Stay Sunny has rolled out a series of tonguein-cheek messages infused with positivity and the spirit of this community. Posters, bus wraps, murals, and even chalk scribbles spell out clever one-liners: “The fastest way to Sun Valley is to slow down.” Or “Don’t be the tourist we all talk about when you leave.”

Stay Sunny also rolled out swag with campaign messaging to local businesses around town. Owners can hand out custom coasters, t-shirts, hats, stickers, and patches to customers, encouraging good behavior from tourists. Smiles and friendly etiquette might get you some “Friendship Chips,” redeemable at four restaurants and coffee shops in town, giving $15 off the tab. Sawtooth Brewery will even offer up a four-pack of customized beer if you get on their good side by staying sunny. Another operative for local restaurants is “The Patience Portal,” where customers can scan a QR code and be directed to a mobile site with trivia games and entertainment to help

pass the time. After all, “our local flavor doesn’t need any sour attitudes,” to quote another Stay Sunny flyer.

Most Sun Valley dwellers recognize that “local” is a relative term in this town full of transplants. However, many of us were outsiders at one point and can probably recall a warm smile from a stranger inviting us into this unique community. So, let’s pass it on and be that smile for someone else. We can’t fault people for choosing to move here, so long as they learn to slow down, lay off the horn, wave with all their fingers, clean up their campsites, and stay sunny. 

things are looking a bit different at SVFF since last year’s festival wrapped By expanding into year-round programming with screenings, events, talks, and receptions, we have emphasized our commitment to connecting the community through the power of storytelling. As a result, we had the honor of sharing three Academy Award® nominated films in the last 12 months (Women Talking, Navalny, Fire of Love), as well as screening indie darlings and first looks (Bruiser, Wildcat, Outer Banks). Additionally, we hosted first-of-their-kind interactive events like Movie Night in Sun Valley with the wonderful George Prentice and Boise State Public Radio.

As we continue to pilot new offerings throughout the year, we want to hear your feedback so we can tailor our films and events to your interests. So reach out! Say hello. Please share your ideas and desires for film-related programming to add to our Sun Valley community’s cultural fabric, extend the Festival’s excitement, and reach beyond its five days in the spring.

New and notable this year, SVFF is joining forces with Variety for their revered “10 Producers to Watch” list to recognize the most impactful scripted producers over the past year. Several of these esteemed producers will be in attendance with their films, allowing our audience to see why they were chosen. In addition, our Education Initiative is making strides with the Sun Valley Junior Film Competition (formally known as FFF) returning to the Festival along with the Screenwriters Lab competition. We’re just getting started, stay tuned for some exciting new initiatives to come!

As far back as the classic Goonies, Brolin has approached his characters and portrayals with strength and purpose. From the stately stature of a U.S. President in W to the thundering Marvel supervillian Thanos, each character he plays commands the viewer’s attention. Roles like Dan White in Gus Van Sant’s MILK brought Brolin critical acclaim in 2008 when he was nominated for an Academy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award and received awards from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review.

Even before these notable roles, Brolin received a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the ensemble cast of Ridley Scott’s blockbuster American Gangster. That same year, he won the SAG Award as part of the ensemble cast for his work in the epic Coen Brothers’ film No Country for Old Men, which won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. In addition, Brolin’s prowess as a leading man was proven and certified in the Coen Brothers’ subsequent western True Grit.

“No one knows why they do what they do,” says Brolin. “I am interested in how people choose their paths and exist for the next best thing. I never understood this. When I did No Country for Old Men, I was completely broke, and then I was offered a huge movie that paid well, and I said no. They were angry and told me it was a natural trajectory. I said it just didn’t feel right. What seemed more important to me was that I didn’t want to look back and regret a role. It’s always been about an instinct for what feels right and then the fear factor of if I challenged myself.”

This foresight and inclination to take the road less traveled make Brolin a cinematic visionary worthy of the SVFF Vision Award. Creative decisions weigh on him, which was behind the choice to take on super-villain Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, the finale of all three phases of the Marvel

Cinematic Universe. The film follows T and their allies as they deal with the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War. The blockbuster opened to rave reviews and is the secondhighest-grossing movie ever.

“I love the idea of being able to do roles in The Avengers and Deadpool at 50 because I wondered if it was possible to get in that shape at 50—not just physically but emotionally,” Brolin shares. “Will people accept me for this? It was an incentive, and I liked that. We pulled it off, and I liked its impact, and now that chapter is closed.”

Today, Brolin is seeking something new. He has been watching different types of films and meeting with many writers to find that next project that “scares the shit out of me again,” he says. “With big movies, you have a massive built-in audience, but what does the ego say when you do a small film? Do I have enough talent to pull it off? Of course, admitting that money and fame drive your truth because you can’t help it. But it’s personal integrity when I do good work, and people respond emotionally.”

When it comes to cinematic inspiration, Brolin doesn’t have to look far outside of his family. Son of distinguished actor James Brolin and stepson to the illustrious Barbra Streisand, Brolin has gathered the seeds of wisdom from their storied lives and careers. “My dad had a very handsome career,” says Brolin. “With Barbra, she was involved in such an old-school process, and I am always impressed by how she made these iconoclast decisions in a studio-run era when people were told what to do. I so appreciate her moxie. She was doing things for women’s rights before many people realized it. She wasn’t fighting. She just did it. I appreciate her very much.”

Brolin has ascended over the past several decades as one of Hollywood’s most notable and accomplished actors. His presence and work has never lost a beat. Brolin has collaborated with the Coen Brothers in many films including the comedy Hail, Caesar! as a Hollywood studio head opposite George Clooney, Channing Tatum, and Tilda Swinton. He also appeared in Sicario 2: The Day of

the Soldado, reprising his role as pragmatic special agent Matt Graver opposite Benicio Del Toro’s mercurial Alejandro. And then there’s Everest, where he played opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, and John Hawkes. The list goes on and on.

Brolin is the star and executive producer of Prime Video’s acclaimed drama series Outer Range. The series centers on rancher Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin) who is fighting for his territory and grappling with the unknown after discovering a mystery on his land.

“Producing is very interesting to me,” says Brolin. “I recently produced George & Tammy and brought in Jessica Chastain. I developed the whole project as a producer, not as an actor. With Outer Range, it was real producing, not vanity. For a second season, I brought new people in and I’m directing an episode or two. It’s how I am filling my time creatively and cutting my workload in half. I hope it’s all making me a better dad. I honestly don’t know, but I am happy. I work on really good projects with good people, whom I respect.” 

Variety ’s Creative Impact Award recognizes the grit, dedication, and creative insight that goes into the behind-the-scenes work of producing the films we love. This year’s recipient, Nina Yang Bongiovi, demonstrates all of the above. This award celebrates her decision to be an independent film producer. A BAFTA-nominated producer with an industry-proven reputation, Bongiovi posesses in-depth knowledge for film financing as well as creative and physical producing. She proved her fortitude while producing her first film, Fruitvale Station, with producing partner and co-founder of Significant Productions, Forest Whitaker. Bongiovi went on to produce Dope (2015) by Rick Famuyiwa, Songs My Brothers Taught Me (2015) by Chloe Zhao, Roxanne Roxanne (2018) by Michael Larnell, and Sorry to Bother You (2018) by Boots Riley.

“When I set out to do Fruitvale Station, it was not supported, and then when Forest and I previewed the film he said. ‘This is what we are meant to do; we have to champion storytellers to change culture,” says Bongiovi. “The film changed culture, and I realized my clear mandate and my purpose as a producer was to change the paradigm of Hollywood.”

Shifting culture and changing perspective is a path that Bongiovi continues to pave for AAPI women, so for her, creative impact holds special cultural significance. “Creative impact makes business and art sense,” says Bongiovi. “It’s a meeting of art and commerce that works and improves the culture. It’s actual change.”

Bongiovi’s most recent work, Rebeca Hall’s directorial debut Passing (2021), masterfully displays this connection between art and commerce. Based on Nella Larsen’s renowned Harlem Renaissance novel, the Netflix global release went on to garner over 29 wins and 120 nominations throughout the awards circuit.

“Storytellers of color can be awarded by all quadrants,” says Nina. “It is possible.” She adds, “We were told Passing could not be made. However, Rebecca Hall was the perfect director for this film. She is a brilliant filmmaker, writer, director, and amazing human—a dream for a producer. It was my personal goal to do the film. It is a piece of art.”

As a producer and the backbone of the creative process, Bongiovi finds every element of filmmaking to be a proven and worthwhile endeavor. From gathering investors and pitching projects to financiers to carrying a film through

production, Bongiovi is involved in every step of the way. On a mission to create opportunities and push inclusivity for historically excluded narratives and storytellers, Bongiovi champions culturally significant films and television shows starring BIPOC talent alongside diversified representation behind the camera.

“It’s a great deal of work to do, especially with indigenous storytelling,” she says. “Fancy Dance is part of this work, which is opening at the Sun Valley Film Festival for 2023. Fancy Dance and other stories are universal, even culturally specific. I am always researching who we can lend our leverage to help others make their films. I stay in the independent film space to bring more producers into the BIPOC space and have it sustainable. I can guide.”

Bongiovi takes on producer mentees to open doors and elevate voices in culturally specific arenas where successful talent and financing can be possible. Although it’s a great challenge, she is on a path to help producers step into this realm. She serves as a board member of the Oscar Grant Foundation, Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE), and the Producers Guild of America. In addition, she serves on the Executive Committee of The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences’ (AMPAS) Producers Branch and is a voting member of the Television Academy. She received her graduate degree in Entertainment Management from the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California and is the Associate Chair for the Peter Stark Producing Program at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.

“The word producer has many different definitions in the film business,” says Bongiovi. “From the creative aspect, it is about someone I want to spend my time with, and the story is first and foremost. I work with a budget and start a path for financing for why there is an audience. For me, it’s a full process not just a credit.” 

SOPHIE THATCHER

Embracing spirit and edge

A Chicago native, Sophie Thatcher started her career working in the theater. A multi-hyphenate talented artist, Thatcher has captured audiences with her layered performances, making her one of the most enticing young performers on the rise.

Thatcher is best known for her lead role in Showtime’s Emmynominated coming-of-age survival drama series Yellowjackets. The series centers on a team of talented high school girl soccer players who become the survivors of a plane crash deep in the wilderness and the aftermath of the group’s descent from a thriving team to warring, cannibalistic clans. Thatcher stars as Natalie, whose punk rock spirit and habit of finding trouble make her an unexpected team member. The series also stars Melanie Lynskey, Sophie Nélisse, Tawny Cypress, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Christina Ricci, Sammi Hanratty, and Ella Purnell, with Juliette Lewis playing the adult version of Natalie. The series’ second season is set to be released on March 24, and has been picked up for a third season.

Currently, Thatcher is preparing for the upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King’s short horror story, The Boogeyman. Other film credits include her breakout role in Prospect, starring as Cee opposite Pedro Pascal and Jay

Duplass. The science fiction film revolves around a father and daughter’s perilous journey across an alien moon searching for valuable gems. Thatcher also appeared in Bleecker Street’s The Tomorrow Man, which premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

On television, Thatcher can be seen as Drash in Disney’s The Book of Boba Fett and in Quibi’s murder-mystery series When the Streetlights Go On, where she led the cast as Becky Monroe. Thatcher has also appeared in Chicago P.D., The Exorcist, and Chicago Med.

When she’s not acting, Thatcher can be found making music or writing her own stories in Los Angeles. 

Emerging industry movers and shakers come to Sun Valley

One of the main core values of SVFF over the years has been acknowledging the behind-thescenes work of the independent film producer. A film producer’s know-how, savvy, and resourcefulness can turn a film into a polished work. Delivering story, message, and intention on budget, in its most visually creative capacity. It’s these brilliant and dedicated individuals that get the job done.

Honoring the producer and the process, Variety’s “10 Producers to Watch” will be presented at a panel as one of Sun Valley Film Festival’s highlight events. Many of the producers from this group will be in attendance, and some of them have films slated in the Festival lineup, including Birth/Rebirth, produced by Mali Elfman and directed and written by Laura Moss. Elfman, the daughter of acclaimed film composer Danny Elfman, has an affinity and expertise for the horror genre and supports women

making their way as prominent filmmakers in the industry. “I am thrilled to be part of this list,” says Elfman. “It’s an honor and amazing to be celebrated for this work.”

In Birth/Rebirth, a single mother and a childless morgue technician are bound together by their relationship with a little girl they have reanimated from the dead. With a different take and a female’s perspective on giving birth, producer Mali Elfman with director Laura Moss brought to life, literally, the gothic novel Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley as if Mary Shelley was playing out her role in the film. In this layered horror thriller film about a female pathologist, Rose, who prefers to work with corpses rather than those in the living realm, and she likes to bring the dead back to life. Along with a maternity nurse, Celie, Rose changes the natural order of life. This reimagined classic gothic horror fable is a contemporary spin layered with detail, emotion, and psychological fantasy for the cerebral at heart.

Making its Idaho premiere, Fremont, produced by Rachael Fung, is the story of Donya, a 20-something woman who works in a Chinese fortune cookie factory in San Francisco. As a former translator for the U.S. military in Afghanistan, living in Fremont with other Afghan immigrants, Donya struggles to sleep and put her life back in order in the civilian world. Then, promoted to the ironic position of writing fortunes and learning how strangers are reading them, she decides to send out a special message in a cookie.

Fung is an independent producer and filmmaking fellow of The Gotham (formerly IFP) and SFFILM. The founder of New York-and Sydney-based Extra A Productions, she produced Nia DaCosta’s debut feature, Little Woods starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James, which premiered at Tribeca 2018, was released theatrically in the U.S. by NEON, and is currently streaming on HBOMax. Other producing credits

include The Giant (TIFF 2019, San Sebastian 2019) and shorts Kimchi (SXSW 2018), The Lonely Whale (2016), and The God Phone (Audience Award winner at Little Rock Film Festival 2012). Fung was previously Associate Producer for Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin’s company, Bazmark Inq, working on projects including The Great Gatsby and The Get Down. Fung will attend the 2023 Sun Valley Film Festival screening of Fremont and participate in the Variety panel discussion.

Other producers joining Fung for the Variety panel discussion are Jamie Gonçalves, Margot Hand, Karl Hartman, Karina Manashil, Nikkia Moulterie, Rishi Rajani, and Jolene Rodriguez. Each producer has participated in a celebrated film or project, offering a lens to change and insight.

This group of spotlight producers includes Jamie Gonçalves, who produced Dos Estaciones, which received a Sundance 2022 Special Jury Award and Cinema Guild award and also screened at SVFF 2022. In addition, producer Jolene Rodriguez at Broken English Productions continues to represent Latina stars on the big screen, producing films with top Latino talent and mainstream appeal. Her latest film is the action heist drama, Righteous Thieves. And Karina Manashil, who executive produced X and its prequel Pearl, will also be producing the sequel MaXXXine with director Ti West, who directed all three horror/thriller films.

Also attending the Variety panel discussion will be Valerie Steinberg, the executive producer of A24’s The Inspection, a Toronto International Film Festival 2022, Golden Globe nominee, three-time Indie Spirit, and Gotham Award nominee. She also executive produced Riley Keough’s directorial debut, War Pony, co-directed with Gina Gammell, which won the Caméra d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022 and recently premiered at SXSW.

And Karl Hartman has worked on Still Alice, Manchester by the Sea, and Captain Fantastic. In addition, Hartman is producing Eric LaRue, which he partnered on with Sarah Green and Jina Panebianco. The movie marks the directorial debut of Oscar-nominated actor Michael Shannon and stars Judy Greer, Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Sparks, and Tracy Letts. He is currently developing a slate of projects with other award-winning writers and directors.

FROM REVERENCE TO RELEVANCE

True Stories about Real Life

As a founding supporter of the Sun Valley Film Festival (SVFF), National Geographic presents a world premiere and an Idaho premiere among its documentary film slate for this year’s Festival. National Geographic has been a Sun Valley mainstay for SVFF filmgoers for more than a decade.

“We are one of the longest consistent partners for Sun Valley Film Festival because we love its functionality and that the event is for the entire community, and that it’s so welcoming to its audiences,” says Chris Albert, EVP, communications, National Geographic content. “In the landscape of film festivals that we sponsor and attend, it’s one of the most welcoming communities, and it is truly community-supported, which we love.”

Chris believes that National Geographic content is a natural fit for SVFF. Previous screenings of Free Solo, The Rescue, and Fire of Love, although all very different films, each offer elements of gripping entertainment that represent National Geographic and cater to the adventerous, nature-loving Sun Valley Film Festival audiences and the local community.

“The pandemic certainly changed viewing habits,” says Chris. “However, above all else, what stands out the most is great storytelling by great storytellers, which we always strive for. In addition, our content is meant to inspire people to take care of the planet and explore, and there’s no place better to do this than in Sun Valley.”

Finding films and filmmakers for National Geographic is based upon criteria that have never changed since its founding.

“Incredible visuals have always been a hallmark of National Geographic,” says Chris. “How you deliver those visuals has evolved over time. It’s a pillar of what people expect from National Geographic, and we have achieved this in our documentaries as well. We try to take the reverence for National Geographic and make it relevant.”

For 2023, National Geographic will screen Wild Life, making its second screening in the U.S. at SVFF. Also from National Geographic will be the scripted series A Small Light making its Idaho premiere. And the documentary Secrets of the Elephants is a world premiere and a follow-up to the National Geographic Documentary Earth Day franchise, that started with Secrets of the Whales, which screened virtually with SVFF. Secret of the Elephants includes cinematography by Ketchum’s own Bob Poole.

“What I love about our brand is the large portfolio we can bring to Sun Valley,” says Chris. “It makes it exciting to share with the Sun Valley community.”

Wild Life

Oscar-winning filmmakers Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin of Free Solo present Wild Life as a sweeping portrait of a conservationist who never stopped evolving and of those who shaped her on a journey to become a global leader in wildlife preservation. From the epic climbing trips of Doug Tompkins, Yvon Chouinard, and the pioneers of a new kind of outdoor lifestyle to the heated controversy brewing in South America as two Americans purchased local land to a love story as wild as the terrain it unfolded on, the film prompts audiences to ask themselves—what makes life worth living?

A Small Life

This series is about the little-known story of the people who helped the Franks hide from the Nazis. Miep, who believes she’s just a secretary, is asked to hide the Franks and must rise to the occasion. Her first task is to get a nervous Margot into the secret hiding place in plain view of the Nazis. Due in large part to the efforts of Wood River Valley resident Greg Carr, Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique has gone through an extraordinary restoration, rising from civil war and unrest and returning to a state of astounding beauty, a story that has been highlighted through the lens of Sun Valley Film Festival’s programming.

Carr has been an original supporter of SVFF, and the relationship between the Festival and Gorongosa has matured throughout the years with a celebration of its coffee products, documentary films about Gorongosa wildlife and conservation with E.O. Wilson, and the many reports on the progress of restoration, rejuvenation, regeneration, growth, and functionality of Gorongosa’s people, environs, and wildlife. The world of Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique has been seen through several documentary films about restoring Gorongosa from its war-torn state,

including Africa’s Lost Eden and War Elephants, both of which were featured at the Sun Valley Film Festival. Gorongosa also has connections inSun Valley due partly to original supporter and local cinematographer Bob Poole, who has brought his work in Gorongosa and other exotic and beautiful places throughout Africa and elsewhere to the attention of our local audience.

The wildlife safari drives allow you to see everything Gorongosa Park offers with qualified safari guides who will take you on a full-or half-day wildlife drive in an open vehicle through spectacular floodplains, mystical fever trees, wooded and subtropical savannas, grasslands, and palm forests. Search for antelope, primates, and a wild array of birdlife. Three safaris are available daily to increase your chances of seeing lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, and monstrous crocodiles. SVFF Screenwriters Lab and High Scribe Competition honor creativity

The Sun Valley Film Festival (SVFF)

Screenwriters Lab, sponsored by Variety, is an integral part of the Festival’s intimate access to storytelling. During the Lab, one of three finalists of the High Scribe Competition is crowned the winner.

For new residents who may not be as familiar with the town’s cinematic tradition, SVFF celebrates the smaller movies that tend to get overlooked alongside the artists who create them. What sets this gathering apart from other festivals worldwide is the emphasis placed on connection, education, and storytelling. Emily Granville, the Director of the Screenwriters Lab, explains that the Festival and the Lab are intentionally structured to keep the joy of sharing creativity alive because, in a digitally-dominated world, interpersonal communication that draws SVFF’s inventive crowd together.

are invited and paired up with industry mentors for the weekend. “That’s what is most fun for me,” she shares, “finding a screenplay…and giving [the screenwriters] access to someone who can help.” Even after 11 years, the event remains a highlight for Granville.

The host of this year’s Lab, Will McCormack, won the 2021 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for If Anything Happens I Love You. Having served as a mentor in previous Labs, McCormack was eager to return to lead the 2023 event. “Sun Valley Film Festival has championed and supported me and my voice as a screenwriter, so I will always be indebted to them. SVFF is all that is right about film festivals—it is pure and immersive, and connected. It’s a place that nurtures stories and storytellers in the most beautiful surroundings!” says McCormack.

Granville adds that it is an excellent opportunity for the screenwriters participating this year to be led by someone who understands the event and the Festival.

Additionally, the Screenwriters Lab will honor Erica Tremblay, whose film Fancy Dance is the opening film for the festival. Known for her heartfelt documentaries, Tremblay is making her feature directorial debut with Fancy Dance. The film follows the disappearance of a young Native American woman from an Oklahoma reservation and has already started to garner rave reviews for Tremblay’s direction. When asked what he looks forward to at this year’s SVFF, McCormack says, “I’m thrilled and honored to speak with Erica Tremblay. She’s such an exciting and essential voice in the film community.”

Fancy Dance was co-written by Miciana Alise, which landed her/the duo a 2021 Sundance Screenwriter’s Fellowship and 2021 SFFilm Rainin Grant. The film was also featured on The Black List’s inaugural Indigenous List and the 2022 Wscripted Cannes Screenplay List. Fancy Dance premiered at Sundance 2023. In addition, Alise was a 2022 Flaherty Fellow and Women at Sundance and Adobe Fellow.

For many, the best part of this year’s Sun Valley Film Festival is the sense of reunion and normalcy that many are feeling. For an event rooted in the tradition of connecting with others, the Festival’s liveliness comes from guests seeing one another and learning more about their respective creative journeys, which is why the buzz around this year’s gathering is all the more exciting.

Just as in years past, Granville hopes the 2023 Festival will continue to build on the event’s stable foundation. “I always say it’s like a bonsai tree—it won’t get much bigger. So we can make it better and keep polishing it,” says Granville. As a result, the event promises to be an inviting and inspiring experience for new guests and returning patrons, with ingenious work and thrilling potential everywhere you look. 

Sun Valley Junior Film Competition recognizes high school filmmakers

When John Nordstrom and his sons Jack and Will took on the Sun Valley Junior Film Competition (SVJR), they were fully prepared to lead the way for new, young filmmakers to take to the screen. Raised with the Sun Valley Film Festival, and attending year after year, young Jack and Will premiered their first film at SVFF. Another Way to Die, a James Bond parody set on Baldy, which they made with their father, John, at the helm. At the premiere, they gave away t-shirts and DVDs to a packed theater and never looked back. Today, as they celebrate the Sun Valley Junior Film Competition, formerly the Future Filmmakers Forum (FFF), they are still making films and work in the industry.

“We have a long history at the Festival,” says John. “Will had his first animated film in the FFF in 2015. Jack won the HOT SHOT award in 2017, and Will won second place in 2018. In 2019, Jack and Will became junior producers and judges with me when we took over the competition and screenings from Bex Wilkinson and Peter Burke, who founded and supported FFF from its inception in 2013. Having the boys grow up with this opportunity allowed them to develop incredible artistic confidence, especially seeing their films with an audience. Their reaction was exciting, even more so when they won.”

The 2023 SVJRreceived 500 entries from across the globe for 2022. In addition, there are 50 honorable mention films, which SVJR acknowledges so that the filmmakers can be proud of their work and continue making movies. The top 11 films will be judged at this year’s competition.

“Last year, there was a clear winner,” says John. “This year, the field is wide open. Seeing whom the judges pick for the top three films will be exciting. It’s important that the top 11 are a good mix and for Jack and Will to add their scores as judges because they know all the nuances and slang of the current younger generation.”

SVJR received thanks from around the world from submitters in Bangladesh, Iran, and Ukraine, to name a few. In addition, there was a submission by a Sun Valley filmmaker and one from Boise. John adds, “These kids have done the work. Why not give them an award for their resume. This competition is significant because we want to increase local teen participation and attendance. The 2023 slate of films is the best yet with seven female directors and four male directors. When judging, we did not look at gender, it just worked out like that organically!”

In the top 11 picks for judging at the SVJR, an eclectic mix of comedies, dramas, animation, documentaries, and experimental films provides excellent entertainment for all who come and watch. “This year, we received as many as 20 films about someone who lost their best friend or a family member to suicide. It was an overwhelming theme throughout the submissions,” says John. “We received many self-reflective films. It’s an honest reflection of what kids are thinking at the moment. Every year we see a different trend. And our judges love watching these films.”

Judging this year’s very competitive field for the SVJR Hot Shot winner, 2nd Place, and 3rd Place awards include Will and Jack Nordstrom and Academy Award-winning editor Richard Chew, the editor for Star Wars, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Risky Business, and The Conversation. Also judging is Emmy-and Golden Globe-winning television producer and writer Mort Nathan of The Golden Girls and the feature film Kingpin. And the competition’s third judging team will be Priscilla Nedd-Friendly, and David Friendly, the Oscar-nominated editor, and producer responsible for Little Miss Sunshine, Pretty Woman, American Pie, We Are Marshall, The Proposal, and many more.

Johnny Sequoyah will host this year’s event at The Argyros Performing Arts Center and present the awards for Hot Shot, 2nd Place, and 3rd Place as an eighth-generation Idahoan raised between the mountains, Los Angeles, and New York City. Johnny began acting at the age of six. Her credits range from the feature film Among Ravens, produced by SVFF’s Teddy Grennan, to leading her own television show Believe, created by Alfonso Cauron and J.J. Abrams, to the record-breaking cult classic revival Dexter: New Blood on Showtime, and starring in Undercut, a festival darling that premiered across 19 festivals.

“As soon as I could talk, I wanted to act,” says Johnny. “I am fortunate that my parents are storytellers. I follow in their footsteps by producing and writing for my projects, so I am excited about the SVJR. As a fellow young artist, I am very grateful to SVFF because there are spaces to celebrate with each other and work together. It’s encouraging to tell young artists what they can achieve. Our stories need to be told and heard, and there are spaces where we can fit in and find each other and community.”

She adds, “It’s hard to be passionate about storytelling. There’s a great deal of competition, but it’s a matter of perseverance, consistency, and reminding yourself that you can do it. This program provides a community of people on the same path as you.”

Johnny resides in Los Angeles, where she continues to act while venturing into producing and creating her own stories, striving to find ways to collaborate with other young artists.

SVFF Film Programmer Ana Souza shares 2023 highlights

Ana Souza shares her curating talents for 2023 Sun Valley Film Festival (SVFF). For the last four years, Ana’s input has taken the festival’s programming to new heights. Assisting her in every aspect is Programming Manager Bennett Krishock, who makes sure SVFF audiences have the ultimate screening experience.

Ana’s knack for finding films to fit an audience, event, and festival is honed with each year of working on film festival program teams, which includes being a staff member of the Sundance Film Festival. Her uncanny ability to pair films and people is a gift to SVFF, along with her love

of independent film and the artists and the stories behind them. Her deep knowledge and eloquent descriptions make for a one-of-a-kind experience.

For 2023, Ana’s chosen highlights are a well-rounded list of films, which include SVFF alums, projects that have come to completion, and movies that are must-see, even beyond the Festival. “This year’s films support many filmmakers who have been part of SVFF in the past, but more importantly, it shows the support for producers and directors who are moving forward in their careers and the projects they choose to uplift themselves,” says Ana.

Fancy Dance

The opening film for the 2023 Sun Valley Film Festival, Fancy Dance, directed by Erica Tremblay and produced by Deidre Backs, Erica Tremblay, Heather Rae, Tommy Oliver, and Nina Yang Bongiovi, will receive the Variety Creative Impact in Producing Award at SVFF 2023. In addition, Erica and Fancy Dance writer Miciana Alise are part of SVFF’s 2203 Screenwriters Lab.

“It is a discovery film,” says Ana. “Erica Tremblay is an incredible talent for a first-time feature and a star performance by a character we have not seen before. It’s a rare and beautiful performance, and the magic in this film is in writing by Erica and Miciana. Fancy Dance will reward the audience. It’s an important story. And producer Heather Rae, a part of SVFF since it started, is excited to bring this film to the Festival as well as Nina Yang Bongiovi, who is this year’s Variety Creative Impact Award recipient. Both women work on amazing films, they are real powerhouse producers alongside a strong team that includes Erica herself, Tommy Oliver, and Deidre Backs.”

Fancy Dance is a film that brings to light an actual situation in dramatic form. Following her sister’s disappearance, a Native American hustler kidnaps her niece from the child’s white grandparents and sets out for the state powwow in hopes of keeping what is left of their family intact. The cast includes Lily Gladstone, Isabel Deroy-Olsen, Ryan Begay, Shea Wingham, Crystle Lightning, Audrey Wasilewski, Tamara Podemski, and Patrice Fisher. Ana adds,“Lily Gladstone gives a star performance by a character we have not seen before.”

Midday Black Midnight Blue

Ian (Chris Stack) lives alone in a house on the edge of Puget Sound, wrestling with long-held grief and shame over the loss of Liv (Samantha Soule), a woman he loved dearly who died nearly two decades prior. As he moves through the world he creates with visions and fantasies of their life together. Yet, he drifts further and further from the present. Liv’s surviving sister Beth (Emmy Award winner Merritt Wever), a woman with ghosts of her own, is the only one to see how far Ian has slipped from reality. Their chance run-in sparks a spiral, ultimately forcing Ian to choose between losing himself completely or journeying toward healing.

“Midday Black Midnight Blue is such a beautiful film,” says Ana. “I feel these filmmakers made something that is universal. It is atmospheric, and it feels like a poem was created in fusing a surreal world. The sound is also a huge part of this film, and watching it on the big screen will be a special experience.” Ana adds that it is exciting that a theater audience will be sitting down to watch Midday Black Midnight Blue as it is meant to be.

This cinematic poem is about love, loss, and healing, a portrait of man grappling with shifting memories of a woman he once loved. His existence is turning ever darker. He must let her go before his imagined life swallows him whole. Writers, directors, and producers Samantha Soule, Daniel Talbott, and Lovell Holder were runners-up for the SVFF Ford Initiative in 2021. The cast includes Chris Stack, Samantha Soule, Will Pullen, Addie Johnson Talbott, McCaleb Burnett, Shane McRae, Dale Soules, and Merritt Wever.

Aliens Abducted My Parents, and Now I Kinda Feel Left Out

Itsy Levan is devastated by her parent’s decision to leave the city and buy a fixer-upper in the middle of nowhere. Her life seems over until she meets her space-obsessed neighbor Calvin Kipler. Calvin has spent most of his life awaiting the subsequent arrival of Jesper’s Comet—partly because he is obsessed with astronomy, but mainly because the last time it came, Aliens Abducted My Parents. This year he will be ready for its return to finally get them back. Itsy sees this as a chance to help her get into an NYC journalism program and decides to help him, however crazy his plan seems. They discover much more than what is on the other end of the comet’s tail—directed by Jake Van Wagoner and starring Emma Tremblay, Jacob Buster, Will Forte, Elizabeth Mitchell, Kenneth Cummins, and Matt Biedel.

“This is a rare film,” says Ana. “It plays to kids and adults as a charming, fun, and heartfelt film. It’s about finding belonging and feeling seen.”

Dreamin’ Wild

“Dreamin’ Wild is a musical biography with beautiful music,” says Ana. “It’s about the story of how Donnie and Joe Emerson blew up. It translates to independent filmmaking in many ways, especially in terms of the struggle between mainstream success and retaining an independent voice.”

What if a childhood dream suddenly came true—but 30 years later? That’s what happened to singer/songwriter Donnie Emerson. His vision of success suddenly—and unexpectedly—came true, but only as he approached 50 years old. And while it brought hopes of second chances, it also brought up ghosts of the past, and long-buried emotions as Donnie, his brother Joe, and their entire family came to terms with their newly found fame. Dreamin’ Wild is an incredible story of love, hope, family, guilt, and responsibility.

Produced by Jim Burke, Bill Pohlad, Kim Roth, Karl Spoerri, and Viviana Vezzani, the film stars Casey, Affleck, Zooey Deschanel, Walton Goggins, Noah Jupe, Beau Bridges, and Chris Messina. Jim Burke is a long-time SVFF supporter who has been instrumental in bringing independent cinema to Sun Valley.

Surrounded

The closing night film for SVFF, Surrounded, is directed by Anthony Mandler. About five years after the Civil War, former Buffalo Soldier Moses “Mo” Washington travels west to claim a gold mine bequeathed by her late enslaved father. It is a mean, dangerous world for an unaccompanied Black woman, so Mo travels into the deep frontier disguised as a man. After her stagecoach is ambushed, Mo is tasked with holding a dangerous outlaw captive and must survive the day when the bandit’s gang tries to free him. The film stars Letitia Wright, Jamie Bell, Jeffrey Donovan, Brett Gelman, and Michael K. Williams.

“This is a fascinating film from producer Jason Berman, who is also an SVFF alum,” says Ana. “It’s Anthony Mandler’s second feature, and it’s a very accomplished western, which is done very well. It’s a classic story with a twist and a compelling performance by Letitia Wright. It is a good fit for the SVFF audience.”

Documentary

Documentary films have become front and center as a source to inform and understand subjects important to viewing audiences. “In the last couple of years, documentary films have been advantageous,” says Ana. “Documentaries are crossing over to a much wider audience. They are being sought out. It’s been said it’s the ‘Golden Age of Documentaries.’”

King Coal

Making its Idaho premiere, King Coal, written and directed by Elaine McMillion Sheldon, pushes boundaries with form and storytelling. “It’s playing with the idea of what a documentary film might be in a hybrid form,” says Ana. “Elaine Sheldon is from the community she portrays—she is a coal miner’s daughter. She’s immersed in this world and exploring it from all different aspects. She created a visual motif, and it’s wonderful and astonishing, tying together the past, present, and future. It’s like a poem and how a community is defined by coal. It’s boundary-breaking, creative, and risk-taking.”

Central Appalachia is a place of mountains and myth. Director Elaine McMillion Sheldon knows this well, and calls those mountains home. Coal has had a profound influence on this community’s identity. Still, Sheldon

dares to consider what future stories might look like out of the shadow of coal now that relationships with coal are changing. She takes us on a fascinating cinematic journey through Appalachia’s past, present, and future.

Sheldon’s distinct vision remixes present-day moments of life in a coal-mining town with archival footage and atmospheric invocations of the land to alchemize something new—a rare, nuanced depiction of this community. A young girl learning the story of coal anchors the journey while Sheldon’s poetic voiceover guides us through the experience. A definitive score differentiates the reality of coal from a more imaginative world. The hybrid approach allows Sheldon to explore the act of storytelling itself and is a magical reclamation of the power of stories to shape how a region sees itself. The end of one story welcomes the beginning of another.

SVFF Short Film Blocks

Not to be overlooked and growing in popularity at all film festivals recently, short films are a segment of independent film, often leading to much bigger projects and careers. SVFF has several filmmakers returning with features and screening shorts. This year’s SVFF Shorts programs exemplify the fantastic ability to tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end in only minutes with a small group of creatives and often on a low budget. A short can be a big film.

“Laura Moss shorts have shown at SVFF before, and for 2023. Laura is back with Birth/Rebirth,” says Bennett. “It’s so exciting to see the potential in shorts and then come back to a career. So many alums return to submit their feature film work after screening shorts at the Sun Valley Film Festival.”

For 2023 there will be an Idaho Shorts block of films made by Idaho filmmakers, a Midnight Shorts block, and a Shorts l and Shorts ll. 

A night to celebrate. A night to commemorate. A night to remember.

In all its glory, the Sun Valley Film Festival Awards Bash is one of the most anticipated nights of the festival. Attendees forecast awards announcements. Winning filmmakers receive the coveted SVFF Belt Buckle. And, of course, all await the performance of the headlining band. But it isn’t just a party—or even an awards ceremony. Instead, it’s an equal opportunity for special guests, filmmakers, and festival-goers to share a night of fun, get rowdy, and bask in the company of others and their successes.

As the culmination of the week’s events, more than ten filmmakers will receive awards, such as Best Documentary and Feature, SVFF Shorty—the best short film, Gem State— granted to the best film made in Idaho, and One in a Million Documentary and Feature—each given to a film made for under a million dollars.

“It’s truly one of the most enchanting nights of the Festival. Seeing the filmmakers’ graciousness and the attendees’ excitement and support is indescribable. And having everyone

together to celebrate the Festival is just so special,” says SVFF Executive Director Teddy Grennan.

The band takes the stage after the awards are over and everyone has thanked their moms. Breaking out of the San Diego scene and headlining this year’s Awards Bash is Sonoblast’s Blair Gun, who will deliver one of the first and soon-to-be-many performances featuring songs from their new and debut album, Blaspheme Queen, which was released on March 3, 2023. The post-punk alt-rock group is made up of Joedin Morelock (vocals, guitar), Zach Cavor (guitar), Alland Mendivil (bass), and Jake Richter (drums). Conceived in a garage during the pandemic, the group of four 21-year-olds continues to prove that punk isn’t just “noise”; instead, it’s something to be heard. Blair Gun brings the energy—it’s palpable and fits the vibes of this infamous night like a guitar in its case.

The group has never been to Sun Valley, but all the members share a love of films, so they look forward to checking out the festival and showing us what they can do. When asked what the next steps are with their SoCal tour ahead, Blair Gun says that they love having their tracks out on films and hope they might find the opportunity to do so at the Festival.

The SVFF Awards Bash takes the stage at Whiskeys on Main Street on Saturday, April 1, at 10pm. Festival, Insider, and Patron Passholders are welcome. You can prep for the party and listen to Blair Gun (Blasphemy Queen and singles) on Spotify and Apple Music. Grennan adds, “See you there with a shot of Tito’s on us.” 

US ALPINE SKI TEAM RIPS INTO TOWN

Sun Valley’s contributions to the sport of skiing are well-ensconced into American lore. They include the first chairlift in the world, the first destination ski resort in North America, and the first alpine ski racing competitions in the United States, along with the glitz and glamour of the Hollywood crowd. And the legend will continue this April when the US Alpine Ski Team comes to town for the National Championship races.

Sun Valley and Ketchum have a rich history of pioneering alpine skiing competition in the country, which began in the 1930s. The area is known for its multi-faceted ski culture, starting with the visionary feats of Averell Harriman and the countless personalities he sought out, who had to help him achieve his vision of creating a world-class skiing destination and establishing it as such. The history also includes a radical, avant-garde filmmaker and self-proclaimed ski bum Warren Miller. Miller produced numerous films, books, and magazine articles and propelled the downhill skiing lifestyle into the minds and hearts of countless people. (For a glimpse or a deep

A lot has changed since those heady early days. However, the sheer magnitude of athleticism involved in alpine ski racing remains—using gravity, and an immense amount of skill, and nerves of steel to propel down the face of a mountain at top speeds escalating to a range of 75 to 95 mph while maintaining control and contact with the run. We will experience the excitement and awe of these elite athletes up close this April when Sun Valley hosts the US Alpine Ski Racing National Championships on Bald Mountain, April 2-5, 2023, welcoming the best skiers in the United States to our slopes once again. The community will be able to witness the best racers in Super G, Giant Slalom, and Slalom races. Local US Alpine Ski Team racers Ryder Sarchett, Jack Smith, and Dasha Romanov will also compete.

Everyone is welcome to come out and watch the races on Baldy and the other events over the weekend. The opening ceremony will be held in the Ketchum Town Square after the Super G race on Sunday, April 2, with music and food along with the awards ceremony for the Super G. Award events for all other races, will be held at Warm Springs Village an après-ski vibe, including music. “Locals are very knowledgeable and appreciative of this level of competition in alpine racing, and that vibe has an effect on the racers’ experience,” says Wally Rothgeb, former US Ski Team member and Sun Valley Race Director. “There is a prestige and significance in competing here.”

For the athletes competing at this level, in these events, winners have been crowned US champions. There is an excellent distinction in that, for other competitors, it is an opportunity to improve their point profile and their standing in the sport. For local racers coming to race on their home turf, the support of a home crowd and knowledge of the mountain can springboard their performances in significant ways.

The last time the US Alpine Ski Team held their national championship races here was in 2018. “This is an incredible honor for Sun Valley to be chosen to hold such an event this year and next year. It is a credit to the hardworking staff and a real feather in the community’s cap,” says Sun Valley Resort Communications Manager Jenna Vagias.

Since Averell Harriman introduced skiing competitions (with downhill and slalom ski races), Sun Valley has been one of the most prestigious racing venues in the world. Many alpine ski racers consider it a premier stop on the race circuit. The alpine ski racing culture has been embedded in the modern zeitgeist of our valley for almost a century. The camaraderie and incredible performances by the athletes, supported by our enthusiastic, welcoming community, are sure to make for a lively event. With the longer and warmer (hopefully) days to beckon us all out of our hibernation, this legacy of nearly 90 years continues. 

PART OF A LONG HISTORY

Erin Zell and Don Shepler say farewell to Galena Lodge

Don bars. Mountain bike clinics. Loaner dogs. Full moon dinners, yurts, weddings, kids’ camps, and more.

All this and a rustic day lodge are tucked into the elbow of Highway 75, beneath the Boulder Mountains and Galena Pass, where hundreds venture each day in the summer and winter months to shred the trails, savor delicious meals, and spend time with friends and family.

Since becoming a community-owned site in 1994, owned by the Blaine County Recreation District (BCRD), Galena Lodge has seen a handful of operators at its helm. And in the 115 years before that, this land, in what is now the Sawtooth National Forest, saw a mining town come and go, leaving a ghost town in its place. Back then Charles and Pearl Barber, as new owners, ran the Galena Store outpost. They brought a new purpose and existence with new construction using historical parts and developing a winter trail system along old mining and logging roads.

Each set of Galena Lodge operators has left an imprint on the historic site and the community, none less so than Erin Zell and Don Shepler, who will hand off the reins this summer to new managers. The pair took over the Galena concessionaire contract with the BCRD in the spring of 2006 and have spent 17 years guiding the lodge’s journey since.

Zell and Shepler moved to the Wood River Valley in 2000 from Oregon. They held various restaurant industry jobs before landing at CK’s Real Food in Hailey when it opened in 2002. Shepler was a chef for the new restaurant, while Zell worked as a server.

One day, in the Idaho Mountain Express classifieds, they saw an ad looking for new managers at the day lodge 23 miles north of Ketchum. They knew Carlin Thompson and Charles (Chas) Savage, who had overseen the lodge’s ski rentals and restaurant for the last half-decade, during its final years of being entirely off-grid and powered by a diesel generator, and picked their brains about the job.

“It started as a joke,” says Zell, that morphed into a “maybe we should” idea. Looking for a more significant role in

their work and the community, they applied and were hired by the BCRD to take over from Chas and Carlin.

“It was exactly what we were looking for,” says Zell. “And we were what they were looking for.”

As it turned out, 2006 was an exciting time at Galena. The BCRD’s vision for and energy around the lodge was changing as improvements and upgrades were made. A new era was beginning.

Up to that point, Galena had primarily been a winter destination, offering miles of pristine groomed cross-country trails, rentals, lessons, and food.

“The trails were perfect when we got here,” says Zell. “They had already mastered that.” Though the snowshoe trail system would grow under her and Shepler’s management.

The restaurant was also open in the summers but served fewer than 50 lunches daily to motorists, road bikers, and the occasional hikers. So, Zell and Shepler began working to increase summer business: from special events and yurt offerings to more weddings and kids’ camps.

The biggest boom to summer came in 2014 as the BCRD began a three-year project building out 49 miles of new trails around the lodge. As a result, Galena instantaneously became a summer destination, on par with its reputation for winter. Mountain biking also grew in popularity, and Galena’s bike shop space and staff grew in response. Soon, the business acquired a permit to guide the growing number of mountain bikers and offer summer clinics.

Despite the endless recreational opportunities, people still come up at all times of year to enjoy the scenery or a scrumptious lunch, says Zell, echoing how special this place is for all who encounter Galena. The humble pair deemphasized themselves, their dedicated hours, and years to Galena Lodge.

“It’s about the community,” says Zell, acknowledging their long history and the community that supports the lodge’s operations. “It’s incredible the stories that come from up here,” she adds. “It’s what people do to be here.”

Shepler and Zell will be around through the end of the season, which closes on April 2 with the annual Ride Stride Glide event and a farewell party for the pair. They’ve been gradually handing the reins over to Kyle Oldemeyer and Chelan Pauly Oldemeyer since 2020, who will formally take over the lodge this summer.

Then what? “We’ll take the gap year we never got,” says Zell. They have plans to travel, spend time with family, and go backpacking in the Sawtooths, but she says mostly, “we want to be here for the summer and enjoy things we haven’t gotten to enjoy” while working.

It’s a dream come true: a year-long staycation, well deserved after seventeen years operating Galena Lodge—which the pair knows they’ll miss. Even the little things, says Zell, that at the moment you tell yourself you won’t miss, like refilling ketchup dispensers in the restaurant or perfecting the minor details of summer camps, weddings, and brunches.

“We will miss this place tremendously,” she says, thinking of the friends that have become family, all the winter and summer days, open to close, spent living and working together in the middle of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.

“It’s legacy,” Zell says, that she and Shepler are proud to have been part of for many years. 

founder, Kirk Bachman, handcrafted and installed the yurts at 8,000 feet on the flanks of Williams Peak in the northern Sawtooth Range, making them legendary as some of the first used in North America for backcountry ski shelters. The location offers some of the best hut-accessed ski terrain anywhere—powder glades, alpine bowls, and extreme couloirs.

“Our guided trips that focus on ski mountaineering and couloir skiing typically happen in the spring when, generally speaking, the snowpack can be more stable,” explains Leidecker. “Traditionally, that’s when ski mountaineering

objectives are in good condition.” Two Ski Mountaineering Camps happen in April at the Williams Peak Hut. These four-day programs include two days of skills and instruction and two days of applying those skills in the terrain.

Spring provides the perfect environment to learn essential skills through these camps, such as steep snow travel, belaying, and rappelling. First, anchor building, then applying them on technical tours, classic peak ascents/descents, or aesthetic rock-lined couloirs. SMG accommodates a variety of skill levels, from entry-level

ski mountaineering routes to technical steep skiing objectives—and as high as you want. Thompson Peak, at 10,751 feet in elevation is right next to the yurt, though it is a rarity to ski off the usually rocky and windswept summit, according to Leidecker. “The highest peak in the area where it’s common to ski off the top is Williams Peak at 10,635 feet,” he says. “We also guide in the Lost River Range, where our state’s highest peak, Mt. Borah, is.”

Inside the hut is a snug and inviting atmosphere for creature comforts, a warm woodstove, a kitchen, cooking supplies, and bunk beds with stocked sleeping bags. SMG supplies delicious and hearty meals and porters the food to the hut to keep your packs light. Evenings are for swapping tales of the day over a hearty dinner, followed by a soothing sauna. It is the most comfortable you can get cozying up to couloirs.

“Depending upon snow conditions, we stay busy skiing through the first week or two in May,” says Leidecker. In addition to using the Williams Peak Hut for their own guided groups, SMG also rents to non-guided groups for private experiences. As mountaineering adventures have gained popularity over the years, bookings for the camps and use of the Williams Peak Hut happen further and further in advance, now over a year out, with spring 2023 completely sold out. Says Leidecker, “It is best to secure reservations up to a year in advance for yurt stays for unguided trips and at least six months ahead for the skills camps and guided programs. Yet, cancellations certainly happen, so it is best to check our social media accounts for those. They can get snagged quickly.” 

Food is the center of health

The current gold standard of success may be simply being healthy, energetic, and leading a purposeful passionate life. We’re seeing a lot of fatigue, immune issues, and generally lackluster spirits dragging around. This is an opportunity to use the impact of the last few years to create empowered thought and action through personal health and vibrancy. There is so much life to live, so much connection to create, and so much inspiration to spread, and to achieve that we need to have people feeling vibrant, healthy, and empowered.

The struggle is intense right now between the host of postpandemic issues including tension, division, depression, anxiety, poor health, and pandemic-associated side effects of other kinds. Despite this, we have the power to upgrade our health on a daily basis and one of the most powerful ways to do that is something we do all day, every day, and requires conscious, health-promoting food choices. The reality is that this is simpler than we make it out to be, and 80% of the guidelines apply inclusively to everyone. The other 20% can be personal and individualized.

Food is a way of promoting health on a daily basis. Taking supplements, doing treatments, yoga, IVs, hyperbaric, meditation, and retreats are all great, but they’re secondary. They’re expensive, and they would all work better if we supported ourselves with healthy, fresh, whole foods.

We can’t get around the fact that eating a nutritious, wholefood, high-quality diet will accelerate our health goals and allow us to empower ourselves to achieve our health goals on a daily basis. And yet sometimes this is the last thing people want to do. Sometimes we have to feel good and be supported to mentally and emotionally understand that we have to care about ourselves enough to want to feel good, to look good, and to want to increase our quality of life. I feel amazing every day on this diet, it gives me energy, the food is colorful and fresh, tastes amazing, and is filled with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and vibrancy. I stay away from processed and cooked foods in general, as they make me feel tired. Processed

foods make me generally feel sick. I don’t like eating meat, and I never liked eating animals from a young age, so I don’t eat them. It was something I was sensitive to as a young child. And I love eating that way, and that’s why I opened GLOW, to share that love of healthy food.

Meat eating is the choice for others, and that’s what makes them feel good, but the general trend is to minimize animalbased proteins. My son, raised on a plant-based diet, recently wanted to try some meat, so we bought very high-quality nutrient-dense meats from regenerative agriculture farms and wild Alaskan salmon, so he could have high-quality choices. But for meat-or plant-based diets, the emphasis should be on the quality of food. My son predominantly eats the same as he’s always eaten, with a little meat added in. There’s no problem, no division created. The point is feeling good and

It takes a community

St. Luke’s Health System’s mission is “to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve.” St. Luke’s has two main strategies to address this goal: population health and community health. Population health aims at improving the health of a defined segment of patients and seeks to provide them with the tools to manage and improve their health and well-being. This population segment generally accounts for a large percentage of the high cost of health care.

Community health focuses systemically on addressing the array of personal, social, economic, and environmental factors, or “determinants of health,” that positively or negatively influence the health of an entire community. Determinants of health typically fall under several broad categories, including biology and genetics, health services, environment, social and economic factors, public policy, and individual behavior. Given that those determinants of health reach far beyond the boundaries of a health system, St. Luke’s works strategically and in partnership with many others to achieve community health objectives. St. Luke’s role will vary depending on the community being served, the nature of the initiative, and the partners’ expertise.

One of the ways St. Luke’s Wood River (SLWR) works to address these determinants is via its Center for Community Health (CCH), located in the Hailey Clinic. The St. Luke’s Center for Community Health serves the community through bilingual, comprehensive, and coordinated health and wellness prevention services, including health promotion and education, health screenings, information, and referral to local and regional health and social services, access to insurance and health care, emergency financial assistance, support groups, parent and family education, and community action.

ASSISTANCE

Individuals with limited or no resources seek assistance in a variety of ways:

 Financial assistance for medical care, mental health services, prescriptions, transportation, rent, medical equipment, food, housing, etc.

 Government assistance such as Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security Disability, and Veterans Benefits.

 Understanding complex medical or government systems such as Health & Welfare and care coordination helps people understand and apply for insurance.

RESOURCES

A broad spectrum of individuals, regardless of their resources, interact with the CCH through a multitude of health promotion and prevention services, such as:

 Health education talks

 Information and referral to health and social services

 CPR/first aid classes

 Childbirth education

 Health screenings

 Fitness classes

 Breast cancer support groups

 New mom’s groups

 Car seat safety checks

Additionally, CCH partners with St. Luke’s clinical providers by referring to their services, being a resource to their patients who need additional support, promoting their expertise through our education programs and screenings, and providing office space for them to deliver services of the Center.

Sarah Seppa, Director of Community Engagement and Manager of the Center for Community Health, explains examples of how they have helped. “We have helped people of all ages, from all walks of life, who, for one reason or another, need a helping hand,” says Seppa. “Whether it be transportation to receive cochlear implants, paying for seizure medication, navigating Health & Welfare and Medicaid to have enough money for food, making appointments with physicians that lead to life-saving treatments, or connecting people to other organizations in the community that provide social services, our team has improved the quality of life, and even saved lives, for countless members of our community.”

St. Luke’s recognizes that it cannot and should not try to it go alone as far as addressing community health needs. Therefore, it may take on other roles, such as a promoter, convener, or anchor.

One such example is that organizations across the Wood River Valley, including St. Luke’s CCH, have been coming together for several months to address a growing humanitarian emergency due to the lack of stable housing in the area.

In the summer months, The Hunger Coalition saw a significant increase in the number of people who needed food assistance, particularly among newcomers to the area. Through the organization’s intake process and coordination with wrap-around services offered by partner organizations, such as the St. Luke’s Wood River Center for Community Health and The Blaine County Charitable Foundation, The Hunger Coalition learned that many people, including families with small children, were living in unsafe or unstable conditions.

As the colder temperatures arrived, the urgency of finding temporary housing solutions became apparent. As a result, temporary shelters have been supported through efforts coordinated by local volunteers, elected officials, and nonprofit organizations.

St. Luke’s Center for Community Health welcomes walk-in clients or will be happy to assist clients over the phone. Most services are offered free of charge or with financial assistance if needed.

The bilingual outreach coordinators at CCH have helped individuals and families get placed into housing, fulfilling medical and dental needs, mental and behavioral health referrals, prescription assistance, transportation to medical appointments, and access to legal, financial, and housing agencies that can offer help.

These are just two concrete examples of community health initiatives in which St. Luke’s has a role. St. Luke’s conducts Community Health needs assessments regularly, determines how they can make the most meaningful impact, and then communicates and coordinates with stakeholders and partners to define roles, strategies, priorities, and desired outcomes. St. Luke’s position (e.g., convener, anchor, specialist, or promoter) will vary depending on the community being served, the nature of the initiative, and the partners’ expertise. All of these efforts aim to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve. Doing so reduces the total cost of care by helping avoid costly Emergency Department visits and hospitalizations. It does take a village, and together we are more robust and healthier! 

Silas Thompson has quickly become a familiar name among collectors. On annual backpacking trips with his father, he began to treasure the distinct birthmarks and icons of beautiful rivers, valleys, and mountains that carve through the high desert and farmlands of the West. His desire to create work that evokes a memory continues to be a driving force that has pushed Silas to be innovative in his choice of subject matter and composition.

Andrzej Skorut was born and spent his early years in Krakow, Poland, before immigrating to the U.S. in 1987. At first glance, his paintings appear to be simple landscapes, but further study reveals that they are as abstract as they are representational. He

reveals concealed depths within his surfaces through layers of paint and glaze, which he then partially removes with rags, sticks, and other objects.

Utah artist Seth Winegar paints unique tonalist landscapes of the West, marked by broad brush strokes and subtle colors. Having overcome severe health challenges in his youth, he has immersed himself solely in his artwork, and when asked why he paints, he responds, “That’s like asking me why I breathe...it’s instinctual.”

Pulp Reality

Gilman Contemporary’s exhibition Pulp Reality

will feature works on paper by local artist Jill Lear, in addition to works by Peter Clark and Jeri Eisenberg.

Jill Lear is a painter whose primary subject and inspiration is historic trees, but that would be too simple. To Lear, recording the trees is a means of interpreting not only the experience of being in and thinking about nature but also the way in which we process the world around us. Using a variety of mediums, including charcoal, pencil, watercolor, Washi paper, and Washi tape, Lear “maps” the tree, applying a level of investigation beyond what the eye typically absorbs at first glance. This “mapping” is a systematic approach to separating the picture into parts, conceptually and visually. “It is rather like treating the tree and surrounding area as if it were an entire mountain range rather than a single object in space,” Lear notes.

Taking in her work, the viewer notices the inherent restraint rather than an exact replication of the tree. There is as much honor for the space between the branches and roots as there is for the tree itself. It is this space, where time and events have unfolded around these ancient beings, where Lear speaks the loudest. It is this space that offers deeper contemplation and perhaps the key to processing the world around us.

Pulp Reality will also feature Peter Clark’s hand collages and prints. For over 20 years, Clark has been creating collage works in his hometown just outside London, England. Clark has stored up thousands of papers in his studio for his creations by scouring antique stores, “car boot sales,” paper shows, and flea markets in places across the globe. Using maps, old labels, pamphlets, magazines, discarded tickets, or cigarette packages, Clark relies on colors, patterns, and textures to create a menagerie of images. From beloved dogs and parrots to colorful fish and flowers, he has a unique ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary while maintaining a sense of wit and whimsy.

Amongst Clark’s favorite materials are old maps, which he uses “for color, information, or joke reasons. I use the linear qualities within them sometimes to ‘draw’ with,” he explains. “They are so versatile. They can be very specific or used in an abstract way. I love them, and they enable one to instantly play and change scale!”

Gilman Contemporary will also exhibit four prints by Jeri Eisenberg from her ongoing series, “A Sojourn in Seasons.” For Eisenberg, this series serves as an affirmation of beauty in the everyday natural world, tinged with the bittersweet—a reminder of our temporal being.

“I began this series as my father was losing both his sight and his memory. With his slowly increasing dementia and the blurring of his vision, much was lost; but an essence always remained accessible,” says Eisenberg.

Using a defocused lens or oversized pinhole while shooting the treed landscape around her, she captured a world she assumed he saw.

“I repress photography’s typical emphasis on specifics and detail but retain an essence that stresses the medium’s expressive nature,” she shares.

Eisenberg’s images are segmented, printed on three-footlong panels of Japanese Kozo paper, and infused with molten encaustic medium (a mixture of beeswax and tree resin). There is an internal luminance resulting from the use of the wax and the texture of the Kozo paper.

Maggie Shafran is a multidisciplinary artist in oils, plaster casting, graphite, photography, and collage. The poetry of her process is inherent to her work, echoing themes of impermanence, transformation, and the human impulse to capture and preserve. Shafran is inspired by classic portraiture and still life tradition, visually and symbolically deconstructing art historical tropes. Maggie’s studio is based in Idaho, but she is completing her MFA at ULA Camberwell in London, UK. This will be her first exhibition at Gail Severn Gallery, featuring new work in various mediums.

Gary Komarin

A master of post-painterly abstraction, Gary Komarin has been at the forefront of contemporary art with a bold yet whimsical style. Over the course of his career, Komarin has developed his unique iconography and flare that garners international recognition. Komarin’s paintings have been exhibited alongside the work of “postwar” masters such as Joan Mitchell, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Philip Guston. This solo exhibition will feature new paintings by Komarin, who invites viewers into a world dictated by color and form.

The latest group show from Hemmings Gallery, Time Stands Still, includes work that captures the present fleeting moment and calls back through the ages in search of something timeless. Friesen+Lantz Fine Art presents a bold new body of work from Boise-based encaustic artist Suzanne Hazlett. Encaustic painting is a technique dating back to the Greeks, blending fire with wax pigment to fuse the material with a rigid surface. “I am a rock climber and a stargazer seeking a balance between celestial inspiration and earthly reality,” says Hazlett. “Incorporated in this collection are influences from stone, land formations, skyscapes, and atmosphere, as well as stars and nebulae.”

This will be Hazlett’s first solo exhibition at Friesen+Lantz, where owner and director Yanna Lantz has been known to challenge the boundaries of traditional, contemporary art curation. This mission aligns harmoniously with Hazlett’s craft. “Familiar contemporary paint media include tubes of oils, bottles of acrylic, and cakes of watercolors,” she says. “To create art with encaustic materials requires possession of ancient knowledge. Wax and pigments in the painting are one of the oldest art forms. I am challenging the expected confines of painting with a new perspective.”

The most intriguing aspect of Hazlett’s work is the freedom for self-curation. Pieces can be rearranged to spark new and provocative visual conversations, an enticing prospect for collectors who can experiment with different alignments in their homes and spaces.

Dr. Stefan Litt, Humanities Curator of the National Library of Israel, will share highlights of the Kafka archives and tell the story behind the Kafka collection and how it ultimately came to the National Library of Israel in partnership with the Wood River Jewish Community.

MICHEL’S CHRISTIANIA

Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as

the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s extensive wine list.

SUSHI ON SECOND

After over 30 years of serving the best sushi in Ketchum, Sushi on Second shows no signs of slowing down. In addition to crafting amazing sushi rolls like the SOS or the Who’s Your Daddy, the chefs at Sushi on Second also whip up other Asian-influenced delights, like Hoisin Lemon-Glazed King Salmon with Sesame Seeds, Baby Bok Choy and Scallion Rice, Spinach Batayaki (sautéed spinach, red bell peppers, garlic, onions, fresh shitake mushrooms with a soy and rice wine dressing), and their SOS-Style Hawaiian Ribs.
