and lifestyle, SVPN visited Smiley Creek and its new owners, the Crist family, in a new era of ownership.

Wrapping up a packed schedule of concerts and events, the Sun Valley Museum of Art presents a show with Devon Allman and Donavon Frankenreiter on their See It All Tour, which stops in Ketchum. In addition, this issue offers new fine art exhibitions for September’s Now Showing section, along with articles on Gail Severn Gallery artist Kiki Smith and Hemmings Gallery artist Frances B. FEELING SEPTEMBER VIBES

As we turn the corner from summer to fall, Sun Valley becomes a different type of playground. It’s one of inspiration for mind and body. It’s also a time to reflect on community and home. For the September edition of SVPN Magazine, we have gathered stories that are grounding and offer perspective for embracing Sun Valley life on every level, so dig in!

SVPN Magazine is excited to be a media sponsor for this year’s Trailing of the Sheep Festival and provide coverage for the next two issues on all that is happening for a valleywide celebrated cultural and heritage event that garners national attention. Read an overview of what’s in order and mark your calendar for the many planned activities and events.

This September edition also covers several other fall events, including the Ernest Hemingway Seminar and the Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency. Each celebrates the creative mind and writer, while offering inspiration in our spectacular Idaho environment. In addition, we had a moment with comedian Lewis Black who will perform at The Argyros for his 2023 Off the Rails Tour—get ready to laugh.

Especially for fall, we wanted to spotlight the Wood River Trails Coalition for making our hiking and biking life the best in the world and taking care of the trail for all users. Learn how volunteers and others work on our trail system. And for another area highlight focusing on outdoor fun

Our News & Views section welcomes Tyler Reinking, MD, who joins St. Luke’s Clinic–Internal Medicine in Ketchum and the first Sun Valley Culinary Institute Fall Gathering benefit for its Student Professional Fund. It’s a special event with western BBQ fare by Wood River Valley notable chefs with exceptional vintage wines, locally-crafted beer, and games, including mechanical bull rides and rising country music star Kurt Van Meter, as well as one-of-a-kind culinaryinspired travel, adventure, and live event auction items.

In this month’s SVPN Magazine Style Dial section, we feature some new trends in design and living with wow-effect powder rooms, bedrooms, and art accents that make Sun Valley homes so stylish. Continuing with Sun Valley style, we also visited Baby & Co and its go-to fashion. Learn how Baby & Co fits perfectly with our happening mountain town life.

For our Wellness section, we continue EXTEN’s health checklist, and we have some interesting thoughts from CENTER on cellular regeneration and preventive teeth development for children from St. Luke’s. It’s all great reading for returning to health this fall.

The September SVPN Magazine also offers the Valley’s best dining establishments from the Sun Valley Restaurant Association. In addition, we have all the most up-to-date property listings for those looking for real estate in these beautiful days.

Fall is always a great time to take care, reflect, slow down, and catch up with those you love. It is also one of Sun Valley’s most underrated times of the year, so enjoy it!

NEW INTERNAL MEDICINE DOCTOR AT ST. LUKE’S Tyler Reinking, MD, joins St. Luke’s Clinic–Internal Medicine in Ketchum
“I enjoy general internal medicine because I get to work with the whole body and a huge range of diagnoses and treatments.”

—Dr. Reinking

Tyler Reinking, MD, grew up in Summit County, Colorado, with two science teachers as parents and he naturally loved being outside and learning about science. He became particularly interested in the human body and proceeded to study exercise physiology in college. Reinking gradually became interested in medicine as a career, particularly after taking a class that taught him how exercise prevents and treats chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Reinking received his Doctor of Medicine at University of Colorado School of Medicine after receiving his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and his Master of Science, Exercise Physiology and Nutrition at Montana State University. He completed his residency at Spokane Internal Medicine Residency.

“I enjoy general internal medicine because I get to work with the whole body and a huge range of diagnoses and treatments,” Dr. Reinking explains. Through his educational background in exercise physiology and nutrition, he continues to have a special interest in metabolism, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and obesity. He adds that his style is patient-centered, “I think the trust and cooperation between patients and their provider is so critical. I know that the most effective interventions in medicine are the ones that the patients are invested in, so I really want to partner with my patients to make a plan that we both feel good about. I also want to make sure that I am following data-driven guidelines and practicing medicine similar to what you would expect at a big academic center.”

Dr. Reinking will join Dan Fairman, MD, and Sasha Chavez, NP, at St. Luke’s Wood River’s Internal Medicine Clinic and will begin to see patients in early September. “We are truly excited to have Dr. Reinking join our practice. He has extensive training in adult internal medicine, and his recent additional chief resident year shows his dedication to learning and teaching,” comments Dr. Fairman. “Dr. Reinking’s personality is even more impressive. His warmth and character are immediately evident. I’m thrilled to be able to have him participate in the care of our patients.”

Most of Dr. Reinking’s hobbies involve outdoor recreation, particularly running, hiking, a little biking, and plenty of skiing in its various forms. On moving to the Wood River Valley, he enthusiastically adds, “Ever since leaving my childhood home near Silverthorne, Colorado, I have been telling myself that I want to return to a small mountain community. I love being outdoors recreating, and there is a special community in these little mountain towns, where locals greet each other in the grocery store and have such a strong fabric while they watch the tourists come and go.”

SUN VALLEY WINE AUCTION SUPPORTS ARTS EDUCATION

Funds raised serve youth and teens in Blaine County

Bringing vintners, chefs, oenophiles, and art lovers together, the Sun Valley Wine Auction celebrated its 42nd year by raising more than $1.2 million to support the Sun Valley Museum of Art’s (SVMoA) exhibitions, education, and public programming. Held over five days, SVMoA welcomed over 400 guests in the spirit of food, wine, and the great outdoors to raise critical funding for arts and art education in the Wood River Valley of Idaho.

“This year, we continued a long-held Sun Valley tradition and created new events, including a Cycle and Sip along the Wood River Trail and a river rafting winemaker dinner on the Salmon River,” says Sun Valley Museum of Art Executive Director Jennifer Wells Green. “We are very grateful for the overwhelming generosity of our donors and community of supporters who showed up to the Wine Auction and Paddle Raise. It is always an affirmation of the importance to the community of the art and cultural experiences we bring to the Valley every year.”

Wine Auction co-chairs Andie Laporte and Christopher and Jennifer Laporte were honored to host this year’s wine auction. Andie, also President of the Museum Board, welcomed donors and members of the community to an unforgettable Magnum Pig Roast and Live Auction.

Longtime Sun Valley Wine Auction committee members

Trish and Dave Wilson and Cheryl and Murray Hall hosted the evening’s festivities, starting with a Magnum tasting on the lawn of the historic Hall Barn in Ketchum, followed by a traditional Pig and Veggie Roast created by host and Pit Master Dave Wilson and award-winning Chefs Bruce Kalman, John Tesar, and Austin Simmons. The Wine Auction’s critical Paddle Raise was introduced by a documentary film directed by Matt Luem featuring local art educators Tyler Sant and Jackson Flynn and SVMoA scholarship recipients Leo Star, Cassius Klingenfuss, and Audrey Hernandez. These teachers and high school students told their stories, in their own words, of how the Sun Valley Museum of Art has impacted their lives and life paths.

This year, the evening’s Paddle Raise generated nearly $400,000. These funds allow SVMoA to serve upwards of 4,000 youth and teens in Blaine County, guaranteeing access to the arts, artists, and performances from around the world. The Museum’s scholarships and other programs have helped allow individuals to pursue interests and continued education in the arts. SVMoA scholarships have redirected some of those lives and, in the words of educator Jackson Flynn, impacted “their life for the better.” 

PAWS UP 2023 CELEBRATES OUR BEST FRIENDS

Mountain Humane fundraiser delivers smiles

Paws Up 2023 kicked off at 5:30pm on a balmy mid-July summer evening with over 250 of Mountain Humane’s best friends greeted with refreshing signature cocktails, including the Sun Valley Labrador, Dog Gone Good Margarita, Watermelon Margarita, and the Mountain Humane Manhattan. Live music by Yachty By Nature included the best of the 60s, 70s, and 80s covers throughout the evening as guests found their way to their tables, where gift bags awaited each of them. Fun, flowery, and sunny décor matched the smiles and laughter of all attendees, especially those who stepped into the Paws Up photo booth to create a custom souvenir from the event.

There were more than 40 fabulous silent auction items, and Mountain Humane pups and kittens joined guests during the cocktail hour for extra enjoyment. Still, the big hit of the evening was the forever popular puppy parade, which was bigger and better than ever.

Sumptuous appetizers and a plated dinner were provided by Rasberry’s, along with a bevy of wine selections. A highlight of the evening was a “Best Friends” video, which was the perfect tee-up for the eight exceptional live auction items and trips, where a few were doubled for high-level exuberant and competitive bidders, which included a one-of-a-kind VIP trip to Scotland and an exclusive getaway to Stuttgart Germany for a Porsche experience. And a lively Paddle-Up from $50,000 to $500 was one for the record books.

TR AILING OF THE SHEEP FESTIVAL

Remembering Idaho’s ranching culture and history

58 svpn- mag.c om

The tradition of raising and herding sheep runs deep within Idaho’s history. It was the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the Wood River Valley and the West experienced tremendous growth. Farms, ranches, and open spaces were fast being lost to development and economic losses forced families from the land.

At the time, the Blaine County Recreation District (BCRD) was working on the Wood River Trail System to connect all of the communities in the Valley. When some missing pieces for right of ways were needed to connect the Trail, BCRD staff asked local sheep ranchers if they would agree to allow use of some of the sheep driveway that was dedicated in the early 1900s to move sheep through the Valley to graze. The ranchers graciously agreed. The sheep came trailing through as

they had for 150 years, but bike path recreational users didn’t understand why sheep were on “their” path. It was then that local sheep ranchers, Diane and John Peavey, decided it was time to tell the growing community of newcomers in the Wood River Valley about the place they now called home.

Together the founders, alongside the Sun Valley/Ketchum Chamber and Visitor Bureau (CVB), worked to create the Trailing of the Sheep Cultural Heritage Center, Inc., which has since taken over planning and execution.

This year, the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, October 4-8, presents its 27th anniversary celebration of the culture and history of sheepherding in Idaho and the West. The celebration includes five days of events, presentations, classes, cultural exhibits, and the ever-popular Big Sheep Parade. The Festival aims to celebrate and educate community members about the regional history of sheepherding and ranching.

“We are a unique festival,” says Trailing of the Sheep Festival Executive Director Laura Musbach Drake. “We exist to keep the history alive and preserve the cultural stories of our community.”

Sheepherding and ranching have a deep tie to this region’s history. John Hailey was recorded as the first individual to bring sheep into this valley in the 1860s. As popularity grew from local mining practices in the 1890s, sheepherders and ranchers played a founding role in the growth of our local economy. By 1918, the number of sheep in Idaho had become nearly six times the state’s population, reaching over 2.5 million. An influx of new residents and a decline in the sheep industry eventually tipped the scale in the 1970s.

As the Wood River Valley rapidly grew, new residents lacked an understanding of the history and culture of sheep ranching in this community. The Peaveys worked with the community to honor the cultural and historical value of the animals and their owners.

60 svpn- mag.c om

“The Festival is an opportunity for participants to experience Idaho’s true living history.”

Today, the Festival honors the work and dedication of these communities and aims to inform the public about the integral role of regional sheepherding. This year, the Festival is bringing in a range of different individuals to share their expertise in their related fields of work.

TahNibaa Naataanii, a Navajo artist who creates handwoven “wearable art,” will present at this year’s Sheep Tales Gathering. As a fifth-generation weaver, her talents reach far. Naataanii uses the wool from a heritage breed of sheep called “Navajo Churro.” Their natural brown, tan, black, gray, and white coloring allows the artist to explore a multitude of different design patterns. Her creativity and skills are remarkable, and community members are encouraged to learn more about Naataanii’s art and cultural history at the Argyros Performing Arts Center on Friday, October 6.

Alongside Friday’s festivities, the Festival is hosting an array of different viewing and participant activities. The Sheepdog

Trials, hosted across two-and-a half days, offer a spectacle for all animal enthusiasts. Some of the most talented border collies and top handlers will showcase their skills in the art of herding. The event is guaranteed to elicit astonishment from viewers as they witness the historic art of herding and handling.

These events, and more, allow viewers to experience and learn about the history of sheep ranching still practiced in Idaho today. “The Festival is an opportunity for participants to experience Idaho’s true living history,” says Drake. “The Festival welcomes all community members, whether they are looking to engage with the beauty of Idahoan culture or learn more about the future of sheep ranching. We look forward to welcoming individuals of all ages to this uniquely, wonderful annual event.” 

PROVIDING CREATIVE SPACE AND EMBRACING COMMUNITY

Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency attracts game-changing writers

The Wood River Valley has a long history of attracting artists of all stripes. The natural beauty of the area’s small mountain towns draws people from all over who are seeking to create away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Artists not only find inspiration from the Valley’s community and the natural beauty, but the community also finds inspiration from the artists. The Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency leans hard into this reciprocal relationship. In only a few short years, the new nonprofit playwright commissioning program and new play development lab has supported some major playwrights and begun making contributions to the Wood River Valley community.

The Playwright’s Residency’s co-founders, Artistic Director John Baker and Producer Jonathan Kane, have launched a nonprofit in partnership with The Community Library and The Argyros Performing Arts Center to provide writers with a year of support to generate a new play. Taking many shapes and forms, this support includes a month-long retreat at the historic Ernest and Mary Hemingway House, which is managed by The Community Library as a private residence for visiting writers and the site of ongoing preservation efforts, as well as a workshop and reading of the new play at The Argyros.

“We’re working with playwrights at the very beginning of their creative process— when their next play is just an idea. And we’re inviting audiences to be a part of that creative process by showing up and spending time with the writer and their work-in-process.”

ABOUT SUN VALLEY PLAYWRIGHT’S RESIDENCY

A non-profit organization, the Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency offers emerging and established playwrights time and resources to write in an inspired Idaho setting while providing community events that offer insight into writers’ creative processes. The Playwright’s Residency fosters new relationships between theatremakers and the Wood River Valley community and fuels the theatre with new plays that speak to our collective humanity. This fall, Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok wraps up her time as the organization’s 2022-2023 Resident Playwright, and Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph begins his time as their 2023-2024 Resident Playwright.

sunvalleyplaywrights.org

Since its founding only a few years ago, the Playwright’s Residency has worked with Obie Award winner David Cale, Obie Award winner and Tony Award-nominated director Les Waters, MacArthur “Genius” Fellow Samuel D. Hunter, and Pulitzer Prize winner and 2023 Tony Award nominee Martyna Majok. Adding to this exceptional list of talent is its 2023-2024 Resident Playwright, Rajiv Joseph.

“We’re so thrilled to welcome Rajiv to the Wood River Valley this fall. His writing has such tremendous depth and range,” says Baker. “His plays are funny and dark and dig into thorny aspects of humanity. He’s an extraordinary talent.”

Joseph made his Broadway debut in 2011 with Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, which starred Robin Williams, and was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. In 2016 and 2018, his plays Guards at the Taj and Describe the Night won Obie Awards for Best New American Play. Joseph’s latest play, King James, that explores the legacy of basketball superstar LeBron James, premiered at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, and recently debuted Off-Broadway. Joseph also writes for television and film. His projects include Draft Day, starring Kevin Costner, the Showtime series Nurse Jackie, and the Netflix series Russian Doll.

“Each October, we welcome a new playwright to Ketchum for a month-long stay at the Hemingway House to begin writing a new play in this breathtaking setting and to become enmeshed in our local community,” says Kane. “The following year, the playwright comes back to the Valley to share their new play. Combining resources with our wonderful partners at The Community Library and The Argyros—two cultural pillars in the Valley—allows us to offer visionary writers exceptional resources and to deepen the programming we offer the community.”

“Combining resources with our wonderful partners at The Community Library and The Argyros—two cultural pillars in the Valley—allows us to offer visionary writers exceptional resources and to deepen the programming we offer to the local community.”

Adds Baker, “We’re working with playwrights at the very beginning of their creative process— when their next play is just an idea. And we’re inviting audiences to be a part of that creative process by showing up and spending time with the writer and their work-in-process.”

In the post-pandemic years, support and creative space for playwrights has severely diminished. Though support has dwindled, the need for stories that offer insight into our culture and humanity has only increased. This need was a major driving force for Baker and Kane when they launched the Playwright’s Residency.

“I won’t sugarcoat it—American theatre is in a real crisis. Theatres are canceling seasons or shuttering entirely,” says Baker. “Organizations that playwrights once considered homes to birth their new plays no longer exist. We’re giving writers a new home to develop their work. And we’re offering the local community a unique opportunity to engage with these writers in meaningful ways.”

All the Playwright’s Residency’s public events with artists are offered at no cost. These events continue to evolve and grow with the organization, a benefit of being an intentionally nimble nonprofit. In the near future, for instance, the Playwright’s Residency is planning to pilot a writing workshop with local high school students.

“Creating opportunities based on what artists and the community are telling us they want and need is really exciting for us,” says Kane. “There’s real joy in being able to pivot to meet people’s needs. In the end, that’s all we want—to support our artists and our community.”

L AUGHING AT LIFE

Comedian Lewis Black gives pause

In the opening of comedian Lewis Black’s latest stand-up special, Lewis Black: Tragically, I Need You, he says that if you don’t know who this aging Jew is on stage, it’s on you, not him, because you didn’t do your homework—and that’s how Lewis Black rolls. Black wears his King of Rant crown well in addition to his trademark pointy finger and comedic yelling execution, which he is bringing with his 2023 Off the Rails Tour to The Arygros in Ketchum.

A two-time Grammy Award-winning comedian, actor, and writer, Lewis Black has a comedic gift that not only exposes life’s absurdities in a way that we can all relate to but also makes people laugh at the hypocrisy and insanity of life in the best ways. “What drives me is money,” says Black with a huge laugh. “Seriously, what drives me is that I am learning something. Recovering from the pandemic kept me going, and now I need to relearn some things. We live in satire because things are so out of context that they have become a joke.”

With Tragically, I Need You, Black brings his inimitable insights to the post-pandemic state of the world. Picking up where he left off with the Grammy-nominated Thanks for Risking Your Life, Tragically, I Need You explores the topics of Black coping with the pandemic, his frustrations with the evolving world, and of course, his rants about the chaos of America over these last few years. It’s spot-on, as Black is one of the most respected comics in the industry, and his 2023 Off the Rails Tour proves it even more.

For Black, it’s easier to find humor when talking to an audience. “If I come out and talk about AI and people start laughing, I can get started. Connecting to a live audience is everything. The relationship with an audience is essential. It’s how I think about things, and when I am on stage and discover I am going too far, I stop.”

A unique element Black has added to his shows is delivering audience-written rants that fans worldwide have submitted to him. This connection with his listeners has led Black to produce more than 400 live-streaming The Rant Is Due shows, and these rants are also available on his podcast, Rant Cast.

A published playwright, Black has written over 40 plays and has found his work performed throughout the country, including at the A.C.T. Theatre, the Magic Theatre, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, and the Public Theatre. In addition to his professional pursuits, Black is dedicated to several charitable organizations, including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Rogosin Institute, and the 52nd Street Project.

Black is also deeply committed to supporting our troops, and as a seasoned USO tour veteran, he has performed for the troops on three Christmas tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, which he says was life-changing.

Black is the longest-running contributor on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. His stand-up specials have appeared on HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime, and Epix. In 2015, Black notably voiced the Anger character in the Pixar Academy Award-winning film Inside Out and will reclaim his role in the movie’s upcoming sequel. His other notable films include Universal’s Accepted, co-starring Jonah Hill, Blake Lively, and Justin Long, and Man Of The Year opposite Robin Williams, Christopher Walken, Laura Linney, and Jeff Goldblum. 

OH, BABY!

Find your sophisticated mountain style at Baby & Company

Baby & Company, a Seattle-born concept store established in 1976, has arrived in Ketchum and is here to stay. Baby Burstyn is the original founder and namesake, but Jill Donnelly has been challenging typical retail since taking over as owner in 2009. Her mission has been to create a versatile brand that speaks to the urban sensibilities of Seattle, more recently, the mountain lifestyle of Ketchum, and always the sophistication of Paris. “For me,” says Jill, “retail is a little bit of magic. It’s all theater. I want to capture the curiosity and the wonder.”

Baby & Co offers more than fabulous clothing and accessories—it provides an experience. Jill invites shoppers into a vibrant space that lights up all five senses: visually striking displays, intoxicating scents, luxurious fabrics, fun music, and maybe even some prosecco. “My job is to go out into the world to find something fresh and exciting, to show the client something they have never seen before. Discovery is such an important part of why we shop.”

With the changing landscape of e-commerce in Seattle and Sun Valley’s major influx of people during the pandemic, Jill seized an opportunity to roll the dice on a new market. Emboldened by successful pop-ups and trunk shows from years past, Jill knew Baby & Co was filling a high-fashion niche here in town. With her husband and business partner, Wayne Donnelly, Jill moved to Ketchum in 2020, “along with the rest of the world,” she jokes. They were prepared to set up shop permanently. The next challenge would be adapting the store to fit a new consumer, not just in terms of Seattle versus Ketchum but also navigating post-COVID preferences. “Things got comfier, looser, prettier, brighter. Let’s face it, the world got a little dark, so people generally began gravitating toward cheerful color. I dress people for their lives, so when the lifestyle changes, so do their clothes.”

While Jill admittedly is not a fan of “athleisure,” she recognizes that people tend to be less dressy in our mountain town. “It is my job to blend the functional and the fashionable. I believe you should always be comfortable regardless of how dressy the occasion.” Casual or comfy, she makes sure to emphasize that the way we present ourselves is something always to be mindful of. “Clothing is not a superfluous afterthought. It is an expression of self, culture, and historical context. When we get dressed, it signals to the world who we are and how we feel about ourselves.”

Another central pillar of Baby & Co’s philosophy and identity is upholding a standard of responsible fashion. Sustainability is at the core of what Jill does, and she is acutely aware that fashion is second to oil as a polluting industry.

“Clothes have become disposal. People think they are getting a great deal, but at what cost? To make cheap clothes, we are using toxic chemicals and dyes that are polluting our environment and our bodies. Fast fashion is built on the backs of slave labor, and nobody wants to take responsibility. My whole focus is to break this chain and educate people about the reality. I do this by supporting indie designers who are working small and sensibly in an industry that is skewed to represent volume over quality. I host trunk shows every season called ‘Meet Your Makers,’ where I bring the designers in so they can interact with the clients. I like to share the behind-the-scenes of the industry and underscore that “these hands are making the clothes.” 

ERNEST HISTORY

The Community Library welcomes back the Hemingway Seminar

strolling through the picturesque Wood River Valley, it’s hard to miss the indelible mark left by the internationally acclaimed literary icon Ernest Hemingway. In 1939, Hemingway first visited the valley on a promotional vacation, courtesy of Sun Valley founder Averell Harriman. During his brief stay in 1939, Hemingway found love for Sun Valley and its rich natural beauty. Today, our community proudly honors Hemingway’s life, preserving his history and celebrating his affection for our small town.

The Community Library has played a key part in preserving Hemingway’s personal assets and historical remembrance. It serves as the sole protector of the famous Hemingway House and possesses a unique set of archival imagery. Alongside this work, the library offers an annual three-day seminar to share Hemingway’s life and knowledge with the public. The Ernest Hemingway Seminar, hosted from September 7-9, provides a wide range of informative and fascinating activities.

The 15th annual event focuses on the theme “Fathers and Sons.” The seminar will analyze six short stories written by Hemingway; these stories include Indian Camp, The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife, My Old Man, Ten Indians, Fathers and Sons, and An African Story. Attendees, whether Hemingway scholars, avid fans, or curious individuals, will have the opportunity to explore the life of this extraordinary literary figure.

The library’s Programs and Education Director, Martha Williams, highlights Hemingway’s profound influence on American literature. “Ernest Hemingway is a significant figure here,” says Williams. “Some people love his work, others are intrigued by his famous persona, and others dislike him entirely.

Wherever you stand in that range of responses to the man and his writing, it’s undeniable that Hemingway greatly influenced American literature and continues to intrigue those who dig into his life and work.”

The seminar boasts an impressive lineup of speakers, drawing scholars nationwide. Among them are Dr. Verna Kale, Assistant Research Professor in English at Pennsylvania State University and Associate Editor of The Letters of Ernest Hemingway, and Dr. Marc Seals, Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin–Baraboo. The event will also feature renowned figures like National Book Award Winner Sherman Alexie and presenters from Boise State University, Dr. Stacey Guill and Dr. Clyde Moneyhun.

Hemingway’s exceptional writing style can be observed in all six short stories. The rhetorical and literary practices used in his writing will be meticulously discussed through presentations and writing workshops hosted by these individuals. Moneyhun will present “Fathers and Sons Stories: Continuity and Change in Hemingway’s Themes,” and Guill will present “Exploring Ernest Hemingway’s ‘My Old Man’: Origins, Publication History and Narrative Artistry.”

Dr. Seals, from the University of Wisconsin–Baraboo, will shed light on the profound impact of Hemingway’s tumultuous paternal relationships in his fictional literature. Drawing connections between Hemingway’s literary creations and real-life experiences, Dr. Seals will offer invaluable insights into the author’s published works and personal life.

In addition, participants can look forward to films, food, and breakout discussions. The exceptionally talented Native American novelist, short-story writer, poet, screenwriter, and filmmaker, Sherman Alexie, will deliver the keynote speech. The Ernest Hemingway Seminar provides a unique opportunity for individuals to gather in appreciation of Hemingway’s literary legacy. For three inspiring days, attendees can indulge in community-based education, forge meaningful connections, and share their admiration for Hemingway’s work.

“We have many attendees who return year after year for this seminar,” adds Williams. “In a way, they have become a family of readers invested in Hemingway’s work and endlessly curious, asking questions about his life and legacy. Many have a long-standing admiration for Hemingway’s work and a story about how his writing influenced them. This seminar allows participants to connect with others, delve more deeply into specific works, and become a part of a community.”

trail stewardship

In 2008, a group of local mountain bikers formed a volunteer coalition to help take care of the Valley’s trails. The Wood River Bike Coalition was officially born in 2011, thanks to riders like Eric Rector, Greg Randolph, and Greg Martin.

When Sara Gress was hired as executive director in 2018, the aspiration was to grow the nonprofit into supporting U.S. Forest Service (USFS) trail crews in the north valley and the maintenance of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) trails in the south valley.

Soon, it was clear to Gress—who had just spent three years on the USFS Ketchum Ranger District (KRD) trail crew—that a shift needed to happen. “People would get hung up on the word ‘bike,’” she says, describing the challenge of raising money to support projects on trails also used by hikers, equestrians, and bird watchers. “We needed to get rid of the user specificity.”

In 2019, the coalition took on a new identity, replacing “Bike” with “Trails” and expanding the organization’s reach and possibilities. Today, the work of the Wood River Trails Coalition (WRTC) focuses on stewarding 400 miles of trails within the KRD and many more across land managed by the BLM, Sawtooth National Recreation Area, and Salmon-Challis National Forest. Financing trail crews for routine maintenance and projects on these federal lands can be difficult, and that’s where WRTC steps in: with staff, volunteers, and funding streams.

“We take a lot of the basic stuff off their plates,” says Gress, like clearing downed trees, raking trails, and building and maintaining drainage features—on-the-ground work that helps the federal organizations focus on longer-term planning.

WRTC’s 850 members and supporting businesses make the work possible, with a variety of volunteer events running May through October for all ages and skill levels.

“Our volunteer trail nights aren’t just about getting work done,” Gress says. “We love it when people come, and they don’t have any experience because then we get to teach them. That’s what it’s about: creating a community of people who understand what trail work is, how much work it is, and why.”

“Having that invitation to everyone is where our opportunity to grow is,” says board member Julian Tyo, who’s worked professionally on trails around the valley for years and was a member in the coalition’s early years.

80 svpn- mag.c om

Recently, WRTC completed its Adam’s Gulch Adaptive Sports Trail Enhancement Project, which included new bridges and work on the Forbidden Fruit trail. Working with the KRD, Higher Ground, and the National Forest Foundation, the trail was extended and improved for adaptive mountain biking.

“That project is emblematic of our shift to the Trails Coalition,” Tyo says. “It’s the type of project and community involvement that we want to pursue going forward.”

Also among WRTC’s work is a Trail Use Monitoring Program, launched in 2021 to monitor trail usage and patterns. Through specialized trail counting equipment and volunteer observations, data is gathered and shared with recreation managers to inform planning. WRTC also crowdsources trail

conditions through a reporting form on its website, where the public can submit information about downed trees, snow and mud conditions, or whatever else needs attention.

And some exciting changes are coming that will further expand WRTC’s work. “When I was on the Forest Service crew, I was shocked to learn that I was funded by grant money,” Gress says. “It was clearly a structural problem. So that was exciting to think about: how can we build sustainable systems and infrastructure to be able to do maintenance and trail construction in perpetuity?”

In 2024, WRTC will launch a hybrid trail crew—hiring two trail crew members on its own staff who will be

embedded with the KRD for the summer season. Currently, the coalition funds one annual crew member position at the USFS via a collection agreement. At the end of each season, Gress is billed for the individual’s wages.

“That’s been good,” she says. “But it doesn’t allow us much control or ability to recruit locally and create career pipelines.” The new arrangement will also allow WRTC to offer higher wages than the federal pay scale allows.

Gress and Tyo are looking forward to the change, noting how it enables WRTC to start building and keeping the next generation of trail managers. “Keeping that institutional knowledge in the valley is key,” says Tyo.

“We have a vast network and not a lot of professionals to maintain it outside the KRD, WRTC, and Blaine County Recreation District.”

The new initiative will continue steering WRTC into the future: taking care of the trails and uniting bikers, hikers, and other users under a single purpose. “We exist for the trails, so we make trails the common ground—literally,” says Gress. “We’re here to take care of what we have and build community around that.” 

SMILEY CREEK’S MANY SEASONS

Explore the golden opportunities

84 svpn-mag.com

For 140+ years, the Smiley Creek area in the Sawtooth Valley has been a rest stop for travelers between Ketchum and beyond Stanley, including prospectors during the mining boom days of Sawtooth City, on Beaver Creek, and Vienna, on Smiley Creek, as well as the ensuing migration of trappers, sheepherders, homesteaders, and ranchers. The 21st century hasn’t changed anything. Known for its iconic black bear statue and huckleberry milkshakes, Smiley Creek Lodge still offers travelers, recreationists, and locals a welcome respite. An area named after its original prospector—Levi Smiley, who found paydirt in the sands of a stream and established successful mining claims here in the 1870s—the oasis lives up to its happy moniker providing year-round recreational offerings and opportunities for lodging, food, gas, souvenirs, good beer, and relaxation. What’s not to smile about?

Smiley Creek Lodge sits 37 miles north of Ketchum and 22 miles south of Stanley as the gateway to the Sawtooth Mountains and White Clouds Wilderness. The surrounding area has a long and storied history. When Sawtooth City and Vienna peaked, the combined population climbed to nearly 1,500, but as boom towns go, the two went bust. Today, very little imprint can still be seen in the forest.

In the 1950s, Smiley Creek Lodge was originally constructed as a sawmill to serve former Sawtooth City. Later, it became a roadhouse restaurant with an adjoining mobile home park. Today, the property is owned by the Crist family, generational backcountry enthusiasts who, since moving to Sun Valley in 1979, have enjoyed exploring the surrounding mountains as their backyard. Just over two years ago, when the opportunity to purchase the property presented itself, they jumped on it.

“Given that we grew up here, we understand the culture and community,” says Zach Crist, now 50, who enjoyed his first milkshake at six. “Our goal is to maintain the authenticity of Smiley Creek, honor its traditional values, and provide a great lodging experience.” The property consists of a store, gas pump, restaurant, and ten RV sites, including two rustic cabins, tepees, yurts, and seven brandnew luxury cabins.

Like those from the past in search of riches or adventure, today’s travelers and recreational enthusiasts flock to the Sawtooth Mountains f or golden opportunities to experience the riches of this valley’s natural offerings.

Smiley Creek Lodge provides the perfect base for seasonal exploration, and fall is a spectacular time to visit the Sawtooth Valley and Stanley Basin. The summer hustle has

dissipated, yet there’s still lots of adventure before the snow flies. The list is long—boating, hiking, mountain biking, river rafting, off-roading, motorcross biking, backcountry flying, camping, paddle boarding, and fishing. The lodge offers standup paddle boards and electric mountain bike rentals through September.

When winter has settled on the landscape, snowmobiling is king, with additional opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. You can follow the groomed trails or easily get off the beaten path. The lodge offers the latest Ski-Doo sleds for rent and guides for extra riding tips or to explore and learn about the area’s history.

Smiley Creek Lodge’s cozy accommodations perfectly blend rustic charm and modern amenities. Their new luxury cabins are available for rent year-round. The Luna sleeps two, the Orchid sleeps four, and each has a living area, full kitchen, washer/dryer, and ensuite bathroom with panoramic views of the Sawtooths. The full-service restaurant serves gourmet homestyle food through the end of September so that you can begin your day of adventure with its famous biscuits and gravy breakfast. Stop in later for a hearty lunch featuring grass-fed burgers or a dinner of beer-battered fish and chips and a draft beer. Even if all you’re after is a peaceful getaway, Smiley Creek Lodge

is perfect for campfire sitting, full moon viewing, and star gazing in the heart of the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve.

New this fall, their ‘milkshake parlor’ area will evolve into a café offering prepared takeaway food and provisions. “Our goal is to serve the community better while producing a much better culinary experience,” says Crist. “We also hope to stretch the rustic lodging into the hunting season.”

Beyond the amenities, Smiley Creek Lodge staff strive to inform and educate guests throughout the seasons so that each experience in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area is safe and respectfully managed. Their guides are educated and experienced in mountain skills. Zach, who also owns Sun Valley Guides, was a member of the U.S. Ski Team and a three-time X-Games skiercross medalist. His brother, Reggie Crist, is an Olympic ski racer, a five-time X-Games skiercross medalist, and a recognized big mountain skier and helicopter ski guide.

Whether you need hearty sustenance, sleep, or supplies, Smiley Creek Lodge delivers with a smile. Wear yours too. The line for handmade milkshakes can be long, but it’s worth the wait. 

STYLE DIAL

BEAUTIFUL THINGS CAN MAKE A HOME A PALACE when we consider feathering our nest in the mountains. For this month’s SVPN Magazine Style Dial, a few of our contributing interior decorators and designers offer exquisite stylings from powder room tiling to cozy bedrooms and accessorizing—it is Sun Valley style at its best.

ARTFUL ACCENTS

“Accessories are a must when it comes to designing your home,” says Jennifer Hoey Smith of Suede Studo. “Coffee table books and ceramic pieces are even more functional and beautiful when displayed on a custom charred red oak table.”

BLUE POWDER

“The powder room is always the gem of the home, and in this new First and Fourth Streets penthouse in downtown Ketchum, the goal was to create a sapphire glow from the inside-out,” says Suzanne Sherrill of Suzanne Sherrill Design. “With floor-to-ceiling, 360-degree application of glass tile from Sun Valley Rug and Tile and sconces from Ketchum Lighting, the scene is set for the stand-alone vanity created from a single block of marble—the jewel in the jewel box. The oversized mirror lends an infinity effect to the tile to create a space with playful horizon lines and points of view. To balance masculine and feminine looks, angular lines embedded in the tile and the heft of the marble are juxtaposed with the vanity’s fluted apron front and glass raindrop light fixtures. Hints of industrialism mixed with a nod to French deco and sharp cuts in a smooth setting make this powder room gem shine.”

CELLULAR REGENERATION

Dr. Molly Brown on tech for well-being

Always in the pursuit of optimal health and peak performance, we are constantly finding advancements in regenerative machines as solutions to reverse aging and live a high-energy life. These cutting-edge technologies aim to harness the body’s innate healing abilities and promote overall well-being. Let’s explore here four revolutionary regenerative machines: Vasper, Nano Vi, Infrared Therapy, and PEMF Therapy. Embodying a holistic approach to wellness, these devices hold the potential to elevate one’s health to even greater heights, particularly embedded in our core neurologically-based techniques.

VASPER: COMBINING COMPRESSION, COOLING, AND INTERVAL TRAINING Vasper is a groundbreaking exercise system that stands at the forefront of regenerative machines. By synergizing compression technology, liquid cooling, and interval training, Vasper offers a unique approach to physical training and recovery. The specialized compression cuffs worn on the arms and legs during Vasper sessions temporarily restrict blood flow, simulating high-intensity anaerobic exercise without the stress on the muscular system.

The accompanying liquid cooling system helps reduce inflammation and increases blood oxygen levels. By integrating interval training, Vasper improves cardiovascular capacity, strength, and endurance, all while minimizing stress on joints and muscles. This technology, especially when combined with pure oxygen, vascularizes the entire system, the blood, and every organ in the body. In addition, it balances the hormones, and studies show that it reduces nighttime cortisol levels by 50%, with the most reported benefit being improved quality of sleep. Particularly at altitude, there are interesting implications with this technology. The Vasper technology leaves one feeling rejuvenated, invigorated, and full of radiant life.

NANO VI: ELEVATING CELLULAR HEALTH

Nano Vi, another regenerative technology, focuses on enhancing cellular health at a fundamental level. Employing advanced technology, Nano Vi generates a bio-identical signal that targets and revitalizes damaged cells, shutting off the inflammatory cascade. By facilitating the cellular repair process, Nano Vi optimizes cellular function, leading to improved energy levels, mental clarity, and overall vitality. With its non-invasive approach and efficiency, Nano Vi offers a time-effective method to boost cellular health and promote well-being from the inside out. PREVENTIVE TEETH DEVELOPMENT

The role of fluoride in protecting your child’s oral health

As a pediatrician, I feel it is important to discuss children’s oral health, which can have a tremendous impact on childhood development and overall health. In particular, I want to talk about fluoride and its role in preventing cavities or dental caries.

Cavities, which are also known as caries or tooth decay, are the most common chronic disease of childhood in the United States. They are caused by tooth destruction from certain bacteria that live in the mouth. When the bacteria metabolize the carbohydrates (sugars) a child eats, they produce acid as a byproduct. This acid dissolves the outer coating (or enamel) on the teeth. Luckily, with enough time between meals/snacks and good oral hygiene, the body can repair this damage. However, if children are snacking frequently on carbs, going to bed with bottles, and not practicing good oral care, this acid exposure can damage the outer coating enough to create a cavity over time.

In children younger than five, we sometimes see an aggressive form of dental caries called early childhood caries. Having caries in this early age group is the single greatest risk factor for having caries in the permanent teeth later. Dental caries will first present as white spots on the child’s teeth. These will progress to brown cavitations that will worsen and eventually involve the gingival tissue around the teeth if not treated. It often affects the upper front teeth first because these are the least protected by saliva. It then, subsequently, affects the posterior teeth as they emerge.

Untreated cavities can lead to many poor outcomes. This includes pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, difficulty sleeping, poor self-esteem, playing, and learning. Children who have poor oral health often miss more school and receive lower grades than children who don’t. When a young child has many affected teeth, their dentist may need to complete the procedure in the operating room with the child under sedation to help them tolerate the oral surgery. This is very expensive and may expose the child to a significant amount of anesthesia (depending on the length of the surgery) at an early age, which we always try to avoid in the developing brain, if possible.

Happily, all of this is preventable with good oral care, which includes the use of fluoride. Fluoride is a trace mineral naturally found in small amounts in a variety of foods and liquids. Fluoride helps prevent caries by stopping the bacteria from being able to make the acid that destroys the teeth and by repairing the destruction caused by the bacteria on your child’s teeth. In this way, it helps prevent and reverse dental caries and aids in building strong teeth and bones. Most fluoride is absorbed in the gut and stored in bones and teeth.

Children living in communities with fluoridated tap water have fewer cavities than children whose water is not fluoridated. The water in Blaine County is not fluoridated but does have naturally occurring levels below the optimal amount of 0.7 milligrams per liter. It ranges from 0.15 mg/L to 0.48 mg/L, depending on your neighborhood. Recent water fluoride levels in your neighborhood can be found on the CDC’s Public Water System website. Children may also have exposure to other fluoride sources in their diet if they drink beverages made with tap water in cities with fluoridated water or eat foods that naturally have trace amounts of fluoride, like shellfish, oatmeal, raisins, and potatoes.

Given that fluoride levels in our water systems are suboptimal for preventing cavities, your doctor may recommend fluoride drops to increase your child’s exposure to fluoride. Another way that we can increase children’s teeth exposure to fluoride is through topical application of fluoride on children’s teeth. This method has the advantage that the fluoride is being applied directly to the site that needs it (the teeth) with less risk of any negative side effects of fluoride from ingesting too much (which is rare in our population). Fluoride can be applied topically in children in two different ways.

First, we recommend using toothpaste that contains fluoride two times per day. Parents and caregivers must help children brush their teeth until they develop the dexterity to do it themselves (usually around eight years old). Second, we recommend having fluoride varnish applied to children’s teeth 2-4 times per year, depending on the child’s risk for developing caries until age 6. Usually, fluoride varnish is offered at the dental office two times per year. However, most children do not see the dentist until age 2-3 and only two times per year, meaning they are not getting the recommended amount of fluoride varnish to decrease cavity formation before that age and in high-risk populations.

For this reason, we are increasing access to fluoride varnish for children by offering fluoride varnish application at the Family Medicine and Pediatric Clinics through St. Luke’s so that we can ensure that we give every child the best dental protection possible. Please ask your child’s primary care doctor about applying fluoride varnish at their next well-check if they fall into the 0 to 5-year-old age group and have teeth! Currently, Medicaid covers fluoride varnish, and those with private insurance should check with their plan. And remember, while fluoride varnish is helpful, it is important for your child to continue to practice regular oral care daily at home and to visit the dental office two times per year. 

WAYS TO PROMOTE GOOD ORAL HEALTH

1. Instead of snacking all day, limit how many times per day your child eats carbohydrates to three meals and two healthy snacks per day.

2. Choose healthier foods (carrots, cheese, or fresh fruit over candy, dried fruits, gummies, or crackers).

3. Brush teeth two times per day and floss between all teeth that touch (see recommendations for teaching your child to brush their teeth).

4. Receive dental care two times per year once your child can comply with a dental exam.

GOOD HABITS RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DEVELOPING GOOD ORAL CARE HABITS WITH YOUR CHILD

1. Brush two times per day with fluoride toothpaste once the first tooth emerges. Toothpaste amounts:

 0-3 yrs of age: a smear-sized or grainof-rice-sized amount

 3+ (or once a child can spit it out reliably): a pea-sized amount

2. Caregiver should brush a child’s teeth until age eight or nine (or when the child can tie their shoes or write in cursive) by standing or sitting behind them.

3. Child should spit, but not rinse, after brushing to maximize topical fluoride exposure.

4. No food or drink after brushing.

5. Floss once daily between teeth that touch to remove food and plaque.

HEALTHY LIVING COUNTS

Feel good today and in years to come

At EXTEN, we are passionate about wellness, so please join us on our journey to maximize life on this wonderful planet called Earth. It’s not just about having a long life but about feeling really, really good today and in the years ahead.

As opposed to lifespan, a “healthspan” is the duration of a healthy life. Here are the most important factors in having a long healthspan. This is the second of a two-part article. The August issue discussed 1 through 4 below. This article is about 5 through 8.

1. Exercise and movement

2. Regular check-ups and preventative health measures

3. A diet of whole foods with minimal processed and sweetened foods

4. Adequate hydration. A recent study shows that hydration is key to longevity and health.

5. Getting the optimal amount of quality sleep

6. Minimizing unhealthy habits like smoking and alcohol

7. Intermittent fasting

8. Supplements, vitamins, and NAD

5. GETTING THE OPTIMAL AMOUNT OF QUALITY SLEEP

Sleep maladies come with modern life. Our ancestors were more physically active and lacked electricity to keep them awake. Lightbulbs are bad, but video screens are even worse. Sleep aid medications are very unhealthy and associated with early death. What to do?

Exercise can help a lot. Learning to focus on your breathing will quiet your mind and bring slumber. Early morning sunlight helps daytime alertness and improves sleep by strengthening the circadian rhythm. Go outside soon after you wake up to get sunlight in your eyes for several minutes. Don’t wear sunglasses or look through a window, as those ruin the effect. It works best when the sun is low, as that wavelength is the signal to our brains. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time if possible. Limit screens for at least one hour prior to bedtime. Sweet dreams!

6. MINIMIZING UNHEALTHY HABITS LIKE SMOKING AND ALCOHOL

People drink and smoke because they enjoy the feeling. However, if we aren’t careful, they can be a trap that decreases our health and happiness. Smoking cigarettes dramatically increases the risk of lung cancer and is associated with a 30-40% increased risk of dementia. Vaping isn’t as bad for you, but it sure isn’t healthy. Nicotine is associated with an increase in anxiety and a decrease in overall happiness.

HEALTH FACTORS FOR A BETTER HEALTHSPAN

“As opposed to lifespan, a ‘healthspan’ is the duration of a healthy life.”

When I was in medical school in the mid-1990s, we learned that moderate drinking is healthier than being a teetotaler. However, new data suggests that any alcohol increases the risk for multiple diseases, including cancer. Heavy drinking has a significant negative impact on memory and speeds up the aging process.

Moderation is key. Two drinks a week are considered harmless by most medical experts. Cheers to that!

7. INTERMITTENT FASTING

Intermittent fasting, or eating during a limited time window, is associated with longer lifespans , probably because digestion takes energy that could be used for cellular repair. The most efficient method is to wait an hour after waking to eat and stop two to three hours before bedtime.

Sleeping in a fasted state is particularly beneficial for cellular repair and sleep quality. Fasting triggers a metabolic switch from glucose-based to ketone-based energy, with increased stress resistance and longevity and a decreased incidence of diseases, including cancer and obesity.

8. SUPPLEMENTS, VITAMINS, AND NAD

With all the supplements on the market, how can we decide what to take? In general, it’s better to get nutrients from the source foods. For instance, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to improve moods and decrease depression, but a recent large study showed that omega-3 supplements don’t do that.

However, I take supplements because there are some nutrients that I can’t easily get from the foods I eat. I take turmeric and saffron, which have been shown to increase happiness. I take a probiotic to boost my gut health. A recent study showed that a daily multivitamin decreases age-related cognitive decline by three years.

My favorite supplement, by far, is NAD. NAD is the energy source for our cells and the high octane for the engine. NAD levels naturally decline as we age, contributing to aging and decreasing available energy. When I take NAD, I have the energy levels of a younger me. I supplement my NAD with home injections and periodic infusions because it works better than taking it orally. Come try it out at EXTEN! 

SVMoA brings See It All American Tour to The Argyros

152 svpn- mag.c om

Rock ‘n’ roll recording artists and globe-trotting journeymen Devon Allman and Donavon Frankenreiter hope to make history in 2023. The friends have teamed up for the See It All American Tour to attempt to set the official world record for the fastest time to play a concert in each of the 50 states. The current record is 50 in 50 days, set in 2003. The concept is simple, but the execution will be brutal as Allman and Frankenreiter seek to complete the challenge in 49 days. To commemorate this unique adventure, the two multi-talented artists released a collaborative soundtrack EP, Rollers, featuring the singles “Calling All You Riders” and “See It All.” SVMoA brings the tour to Ketchum for its Idaho concert— the 44th in the 50 lineup.

The See It All Tour launched on August 5 with two shows in one day, first in Maryland and then in Pennsylvania. From there, the tour officially took off and is bringing these road warriors to places they’ve never been, at a pace that’s never been done, testing their wills at every turn, before it wraps up with hopeful celebrations on September 22 in California at the Beachlife Ranch Festival in Redondo Beach, California. Throughout the tour, Devon and Donavon are performing music from Rollers and each of their solo songs, with a fourpiece backing band. Along the way, they are joined nightly by rotating support acts: Matt Anderson, JD Simo, Matt Costa, Davy Knowles, Mishka, Jackson Stokes, and Goodnight Texas.

“I had this idea in my back pocket for the better part of a decade,” shares Allman. “Doing 50 shows in the 50 United States in 50 days. I think growing up reading the Guinness Book of World Records, it’s just always been a fantasy to go after a world record. This undertaking is going to be really difficult but very rewarding. I found the perfect co-conspirator in Donavon Frankenreiter. We have been jamming together for years and are quite simpatico...he is the perfect Evel to my Knievel.”

“There’s no better way to see it all. I couldn’t think of a better friend to do something this crazy with,” adds Frankenreiter. “I first met Devon on the Allman Family Revival Tour, and we always talked about doing something together. As soon as Devon shared this crazy idea about breaking a world record, I said, ‘Let’s do this.’ A year later, we are ready to see it all...or at least attempt to see it all. This is a huge feat for everybody, from managers to agents.”

For nearly four decades, Donavon Frankenreiter has been traveling the globe, first as a professional surfer – he turned pro at 16—who started jamming ukulele with Jack Johnson on the circuit, his surfboard always in tow. Over ten years later, he was writing and singing his songs. With over a dozen albums under his belt, Frankenreiter has worked it on the worldwide touring trail—including at Whiskey’s in

“It’s going to be so emotional if we’re onstage for that 50th show at Beachranch Festival in LA. It’ll be a moment you can’t ever re-create.”

Ketchum—for three decades, entertaining audiences with his unique blend of laid-back grooves, philosophical lyrics, and soulful delivery.

Blues Music Award-winning singer, guitarist, songwriter, and producer Devon Allman (son of rock legend Gregg Allman) has appeared at the world’s biggest festivals and has co-founded the supergroups Royal Southern Brotherhood and The Allman Betts Band, amassing a recording catalog of 11 albums.

The heart and soul behind the EP Rollers is all about rolling down the road to experience a different perspective on the greatness of America, explains Frankenreiter. Their single, “Calling All You Riders,” invites the ‘wild, brave, and free to go places they have only seen in magazines, movies, and TV.’ Allman adds, “These songs aren’t rockers, they’re rollers…the perfect soundtrack for you to roll from town to town on a summertime road trip.”

With Idaho’s stop sixth from the finish line, Frankenreiter assures his Ketchum audience that the same energy will be there as it was for concert eleven. “We’ll be well-greased up for a great show,” he says. “I told the guys if we get past 40, we’ll be counting down. The adrenaline will be building at that point. It’s going to be so emotional if we’re onstage for that 50th show at Beachranch Festival in LA. It’ll be a moment you can’t ever re-create.” 

L AY OF THE L AND CONNECTS TO NATURE

New works by Frances B. Ashforth

Artist Frances B. Ashforth is fascinated by land, whether a singular boulder, a rock cairn, a body of water, or the slope of a mountain. A student of history held within a landscape, Ashforth methodically studies her surroundings. With a background in architectural illustration and draftsmanship, she has a clear understanding of lines and space. Drawing on the tension between light, land, water, and her own perspective, Ashforth successfully constructs moments of time. Her large and small works on paper impart a knowledge and awareness of material and terrain. Attune to the delicate balance between humanity and environment, Ashforth creates drawings, paintings, and prints that are quiet and powerful. Ashforth writes, “Our landscape defines us. We know the outline of a particular hill or mountain, the shape of the edge of the lake we swim in or walk along, and the feel of a familiar stone wall.” Her work demonstrates just that, familiarity and memory, a story and understanding of the land that continually shapes our understanding of the world.

There is a strong thread that weaves art to land. Art is inherently shaped by natural elements that make pigments, stone, paper, canvas, clay, wood—a list that is seemingly endless. Ashforth acknowledges this and intentionally sources her ink, graphite, paint, paper, and boards. “My studio practice is as sustainable as possible. I use water-based inks, which require no use of solvents, and I repurpose paper

frequently. Natural resources are essential to us all. I am an ongoing observer and do my best to research where my materials, such as ink and paper, are sourced from.”

One can see the dedication to understanding a place, visually and viscerally, in Ashforth’s graphite drawings of boulders and cairns, oil landscapes, and monochromatic monotypes. As a hiker, Ashforth is familiar with reading a rock cairn and the visual cues that guide. Stones placed to mark a trail—stacked carefully but susceptible to the elements, a large boulder with layers of the past. The drawing Big Boulder, Redfish Lake is skillful and technical, demonstrating Ashforth’s background as an architectural draftsman and illustrator. Structure meets negative space, and the entire page is filled with a sense of the layered nuances of geological history. The precise penciled details of the crevices, chips, and layers impart “grit and beauty” to what Ashforth sees as an artist. The smooth surface of the page and the pureness of the untouched white paper bely the realism that is achieved. The Big Boulder holds a history and past that can be overlooked but is seen in the imperfection and beauty captured by Ashforth’s hand.

An avid fly fisherwoman and hiker, Ashforth is keenly aware of how water shapes our interactions with our surroundings. Essential and precious water is constantly changing—it ebbs, it flows, and it dries up. The diptych Wild Blue 1 & 2 creates

an almost frenetic movement mediated by the stillness of white. With the same innate sense of space seen in her drawings, Ashforth is able to give us a familiar landscape. It is not explicitly rendered, but we know that the artist is intimate with the nuances of shifting planes of light and the flatness of earth meeting sky. Ink meets paper creating sharp contrast, ranging from deep and rich to pale and wispy. Ashforth imprints a sense of movement that is suggestive of water or snow. While seemingly different from the tightness of her drawings, each print maintains Ashforth’s intentional study of mark-making and how it can embody a place.

In her oil landscapes, Ashforth uses color to create light and space. While her monotypes and drawings rely on monochromatic shading and white ground, her paintings offer controlled studies in light. Prairie Study 1 is simple but holds a feeling of clouds sweeping over flat land. Her brushstrokes are loose and intuitive. This is a study of memory, it is a place, but it is her place. She is giving us a memory of something we may have seen.

In each of her chosen mediums, Ashforth’s hand constructs light, land, water, and geological history. She is not recreating the natural world for us but bringing us into a nuanced and researched space. We can each find some familiarity or memory of landscape in her work. Ashforth’s work successfully puts memory to paper and “instill[s] the desire to respect and remember what the land continues to give us in all its variety, grit, and beauty.”

KIKI SMITH

Collaborating with the physical world

German-born and New Jersey-raised, Kiki Smith is one of the most prolific and well-known female artists of our generation. Smith came of age a mere stone’s throw away from New York City and the vibrant East Village art scene of the 1980s, which would ultimately become the backdrop of her early career. Her father, Tony Smith, is cited as a pioneering figure in American Minimalist sculpture, primarily throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

Art and creative thought permeated all aspects of Kiki Smith’s early life, as did her Catholic upbringing. Although she is no longer a practicing Catholic, she says, tongue-in-cheek, “The church just has the best iconography.” Themes of religion, mythology, nature, and the human body manifest in Smith’s evocative work across a wide variety of mediums.

Kiki Smith’s artwork exists at the intersection of fantasy and folklore, with powerful feminist undertones. She posits the female form as a highly charged symbol and a vehicle to speak through. Characterizing the imaginary, Smith blurs a line between what is carnal and what is illusory. Smith initially challenged traditional ideas of figurative sculpture by exploring beneath the skin’s surface, going as far as to illustrate bodily tissues and organs.

She talks about how her interdisciplinary practice has evolved from being much more corporal, confrontational, and political to considering nature and the mystery of its beauty. Motifs of animals, celestial bodies, and unlikely flora reverberate throughout her sculptures, paintings, prints, and tapestries. Smith explains, “My work went toward nature because at first (when you’re young), you’re grappling with what it means to be in a body, to begin with, and all the complexity of that, but now (being older) it’s to look beyond one’s own body and to the universe. That’s when I started working more with fairy tales because I thought identity is interwoven with nature.”

Gail Severn Gallery presents new work by Kiki Smith in an exhibition comprised of large-scale prints and jacquard tapestries. This two-person show, in conjunction with Japanese American artist Jun Kaneko, will run through September.

Smith’s work is in numerous prominent museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Smith currently lives and works in New York City. 

Artists Erik Hall and Amy Spassov combine two vastly different painting styles and mediums to create collaborative paintings that celebrate their individual expressions in painting the natural world around them. Their paintings capitalize on the dualities of what is real and what is fantasy.

Erik Hall’s landscapes are representations of reality that have been filtered and augmented by his memory. As described by Hall, “The expanses in my work are an indication that something I have seen is present, is real, and exists, even though it is being told as I remember it and not as it actually occurred.”

Hall uses an adept process of laboriously layering common colors with unlikely ones as his basis for creating gesturing organic forms set amongst still yet suggestive landscapes, compositions that speak with a silence.

Amy Spassov’s process has developed over the years through an exploration of different themes and mediums with a deep fascination and connection to the natural world. Spassov works in layers using numerous tools, paint, and collage as a means to assemble and then deduct what is relevant. This ebb and flow process allows the artist to unearth the premise of each body of work.

Frances McCormack

Above and Below

“These places provide a container where the urgency and noise of everyday obligations fall away, and the visitor has access to other dimensions of thought and feeling.”

Frances McCormack is a Professor

Emerita of Painting at the San Francisco Art Institute whose work as an abstract painter draws on the history of gardens and landscape design. Combining architectural elements and loosely interpreted botanical forms, the paintings hold a range of energies reflected through the natural world. Lush paint, the physicality of the execution, and the history of decisions are obvious and unapologetically optical. She has sought out these spaces or walled gardens in Rome at the Villa d’Este and Villa Lante, at the Alhambra in Spain, the Topkai Palace in Istanbul, in Mexico at the houses of the architect Luis Barragan, or Santa Barbara at Ganna Walska’s LotusLand. More interested in seduction than instruction or critique, she is in pursuit of the marvelous.

Russell Chatham (1939-2019)

Russell Chatham’s perfectionist nature is evidenced in his landscape paintings. Sometimes taking as long as a year to complete them, Chatham did not consider a painting “finished” until he determined it so. Working from memory, his landscape paintings contain an inimitable poetic quality. Chatham often began a painting with notes describing the light, the weather, and the atmosphere and recording more of a sense of place. He carried this memory and experience back to the studio, where he would proceed to suggest and convey through paint. He is also regarded as one of the foremost lithographers in the world, with his lithographs taking up to 50 separate plates.

Chatham’s early upbringing in what were then the wild hills and country around the family ranch in Carmel and later in Marin County, California, had a direct influence on Chatham’s future. The grandson of renowned painter Gottardo Piazzoni, Chatham was seldom without paints, an easel, and a fishing rod. With his love of the outdoors, Chatham was later drawn to the mountains surrounding Livingston, Montana, where he spent several decades.

In addition to his painting, Russell owned and operated his own printing company, Clark City Press, wanting to have control of designing, manufacturing, and doing a first-rate job not only for his books but also for new and promising authors. A self-taught writer, Chatham’s articles, stories, and essays have appeared in Esquire, The Atlantic, Sports Illustrated, Outside, and dozens of other publications. His books include The Angler’s Coast, Silent Seasons, Dark Waters, Striped Bass on the Fly, The Missouri Headwaters, and One Hundred Paintings. During that time, Chatham also showed off his culinary expertise by opening a restaurant because he wanted to have fine dining available in desolate Livingston, Montana.

While Chatham’s major accomplishments, adventures, and stories are pratically endless, his landscape paintings are what he is known for, and it’s no surprise. Since he began formally showing his work in 1958, Chatham has had a multitude of one-man shows at museums, art centers, and galleries.

Carol Glenn has traveled to locations throughout the world and studied ceramics with master potters since the 1970s. Her pottery exudes her life’s experiences, relationships, and connections to her own family, art, and home. She has also accompanied her husband, actor Scott Glenn, to movie sets and locations around the world.

“Glenn came of age as an artist and ceramist during the time of clay’s and American art’s greatest transformation,” says ceramic art historian Kristine Poole. “In the 1940s and 1950s, Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada’s commitment to simplicity, form, and function gave way to Peter Voulkos and Paul Soldner’s defiant insistence that the vessel form and functionality were confining. Glenn began her work as an artist in the ‘70s, just after

abstraction in general and Abstract Expressionism specifically had taken hold of the art world and shaken it to its core...It is at the intersection of the radical letting go and the strict limitations of form where Glenn’s success lies. And in the balance, there is a tremendous quiet beauty.”

Carol Glenn’s book Carol Glenn is an exquisite reflection of her work and her life. She is a recipient of the prestigious Moonhole Fellowship from the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and also studied at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and the University of Southern California at Idyllwild. Her work is in many private collections throughout the country. Carol Glenn lives and works in Ketchum, Idaho.

Jun Kaneko and Kiki Smith

A selection of artwork by Jun Kaneko will be on view through September in a two-person exhibition with Kiki Smith. Kaneko’s monolithic ceramic sculptures, paintings, wall platters, small-scale works from his private collection, and iconic “dangos” comprise a major survey of the artist’s work. Through intentional repetition of brushstrokes and motifs, Kaneko creates a kind of abstract imagery that is recognizable and uniquely his. The exhibition will also introduce Kiki Smith’s new, large-scale prints of majestic woodland creatures and symbolic forms adorned with brilliant gold leafing, bringing her original mythology to life. Printmaking has played an integral role in Kiki Smith’s oeuvre since the beginning of her career, and she became an equal partner with her sculpture by the 1990s. Her later prints expand upon her established proclivity for nonconventional approaches and present images of nature and folklore. The artist’s monumental jacquard tapestries similarly tell mystifying stories that aim to uncover the spiritual within the natural world. The work by both artists engages in an interesting dialogue involving texture and scale, as well as surface and three-dimensionality.

Robert McCauley

A solo exhibition featuring new paintings by Robert McCauley, inspired by his Native American artifact collection. Over the last 35 years, McCauley has expertly honed his depictions of Western wildlife, such as trout, bears, deer, and moose. Though his style is rooted in the tradition of 19th-century American Romanticism, his narratives are contemporary, timely, and relevant. McCauley addresses themes and issues of cultures in collision, environmental ethics, and humankind’s impact on other species.

Linda Christensen

Linda Christensen’s oils catch people in a “pensive place.” This may just be a moment, but something that we all do without being aware. Christensen finds the magic in seeing the humanness in others as they turn inward, reflective but uncritical. It is this emotion and empathy that the artist seeks to transmit on canvas. With this selection of new and recent work, Christensen captures our intimate knowledge of the solitude of the self through a poignant understanding of the relationship between color and form.

Sightings

September 15-December 2

Living through the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans developed a new relationship to the night sky, looking to the stars for connection at a time of isolation. Located in rural Idaho, the number one state per capita for UFO sightings, Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) sits at the edge of the 1,416 square-mile Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve. Motivated by this geography and by local lore surrounding the possibility of extraterrestrial life, SVMoA’s fall exhibition considers our human experience of UFOs and the extraterrestrial. Rather than

ask what those who report UFO sightings have actually seen, the exhibition asks why we look to the night skies for signs of life and how we experience phenomena we can’t explain. Featuring commissioned projects by artists Deb Sokolow and Cable Griffith alongside work by Karla Knight, Robyn O’Neil, Lonel Talpazan, Esther Pearl Watson, and Timothy Wyllie.

Frances B. Ashforth

Lay of the Land

September and October | Opening Night September 1 | 5-7:30pm

Idaho is where Frances B. Ashforth comes to allow her mind, body, and imagination to unfurl. It is here that she can immerse herself in her multifarious interests in art, fly fishing, geology, and conservation. In a recent TEDx talk, Ashforth discussed her process, influences, and motivations: “I understand the importance of art within the environment, of the role art plays in sharing ideas through imagery and storytelling.”

Her stories frequently center on the powerful confluences of natural forces at work in The Great Basin, the Snake River Plain, and surrounding areas. “To me, some of the most starkly beautiful places are deserts and ancient inland seabeds.”

In her current exhibition at Hemmings Gallery, Lay of the Land, the awesome power of water serves as the subject for Wild Blue 1 & 2 (2021) and Water & Sky 1-4 (2022). These minimal, deep-blue landscapes feature a spare horizon line with wide brushstrokes above and below, massive storm fronts moving in over placid bodies of water. Ashforth elaborates, “I wanted to capture that giant, wide feeling of big, open sky” and her experiences of being caught in major weather events while hiking or fishing. These works are an extension of her ongoing series Water Study (2014–present); a

handful of her first compositions from this series in blackand-white are also on view.

The Horizon, Lay of the Land, and Walking on Lava series (2019–present) are based on the ethereal lava flows of Craters of the Moon National Monument. Ashforth’s unique process, in which she manipulates liquid ink over a smooth surface, perfectly emulates its flowing masses of volcanic rock. As seen in many of her works, the horizon is of personal significance for the artist, symbolizing not only possibility but also “our individual range of outlook, experience, and knowledge.”

While much of her work is indeed monochrome, she has expanded to a wider palette in recent paintings, including Prairie Study 1-4 (2022). These works reflect her current focus on The Snake River Plain and Camas Prairie. She is drawn to the region’s ecotonal biodiversity, geology, and importance for the Shoshone-Bannock people.

PIONEER SALOON

Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

THE SAWTOOTH CLUB

Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials and much more.

In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 18 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this summer include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams and garlic, chicken Senegalese, mesquite rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, fresh steelhead salmon, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, roasted free-range chicken, fresh Alaskan halibut, seared ahi salad, spicy sesame noodle bowl and fresh Willapa Bay steamer clams, to name just a few.

All of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood.

An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and summer evenings on the outdoor terrace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

MICHEL’S CHRISTIANIA

Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and

mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, Executive Chef Laurent Loubot, who hails from Chalon-sur-Saone (Burgundy), presents classic French cuisine that is also inspired by Michel’s background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital).

Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s extensive wine list.
