EDITOR’S WELCOME

At Camp Rainbow Gold, a nonprofit that continues to take care of Idaho’s children with cancer, its gala fundraiser, the Share Your Heart Ball in Sun Valley, returns in person. In addition, taking care of another sect or of our community is Men’s Second Chance Living. Read about Sonya Wilander’s incredible efforts for a sober house that helps change the lives of men one at a time.

St. Luke’s is always caring for us, and David D. Laxson gives us the 411 on heart disease, while Dr. Molly Brown offers other options at CENTER for mental and wellbeing balance.

This February edition also highlights Sun Valley’s winter style with fashion picks from shops and store owners. It may hit you with a shopping bug! In addition, our new Style Dial look adds to our coverage of architectural trends and interior design. See the big picture of what you can do to make your mountain home irresistible and comfortable.

COMMUNITY IS EVERYTHING

the topic of what makes a community was part of a discussion I had while interviewing George Prentice, who will be in Sun Valley for this President’s Day Weekend with his fun and exciting “Movie Night in Sun Valley” for a Sun Valley Film Festival event. We agreed that what makes a community livable are the volunteers, emergency service personnel, and neighbors helping one another—something that happens all the time in Sun Valley.

In this issue of SVPN Magazine, we look at some of the organizations and people who make our Valley an incredible place to live, and what’s new in winter fashion, style, and fun. Perhaps most exciting is our cover story with world renowned French cellist Gautier Capuçon. He takes a jump from his European tour to perform at The Argyros as in An Original Argyros Production. This curated and styled event created explicitly for a Sun Valley audience is one of several this season that are shaping the arts and culture of our community on many levels.

The Argyros is one of several nonprofits that make Sun Valley a special and unique place, and there are others doing less glamorous work but still making a significant difference. Please read about how we are tackling the affordable housing issue with the Lease to Locals program and the real stories of those in our community who make it a place we all want to call home.

Adding to SVPN Magazine ’s winter appeal, we have covered all the outdoor winter fun from Stanley to Fairfield. Snowmobile in the winter wonderland of Stanley and in and around the Sawtooth Valley, or try out what’s happening at Soldier Mountain, a longtime family tradition for our contributing writer Lori Williams.

If staying inside is more appealing, we have you covered with new events from the Sun Valley Film Festival, “Movie Night in Sun Valley” with George Prentice, and an SVFFirst Look at season three and episode one of the everpopular Outer Banks with special guests in attendance. In addition, enjoy the Sun Valley Culinary Institute’s inaugural Sun Valley Food & Wine Celebration and take in the extraordinary musical talents of Andy Frasco & the U.N. Read about Andy’s new lease on life and how he is better than ever.

As always, SVPN is your source for fine dining tips with the Sun Valley Restaurant Association’s Dining Guide and we have plenty of homes and properties in SVPN ’s real estate gallery and listing section for you to peruse.

Get out, stay in, but enjoy February in Sun Valley— it’s happening!

On Saturday, December 31, Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) rang in the new year with a fundraiser at OCHI gallery sponsored by AERO. Over 75 guests attended the New Year’s celebration to preview the exhibition Wish You Were Here, featuring new works by contemporary artists. Revelers viewed the art while sipping Phifer Pavitt bubbles and enjoying caviar and canapes by Gastrolab in Ketchum.

Sun Valley Museum of Art Executive Director Jennifer Wells Green welcomed guests, artists, and art collectors and donors, including Bex Wilkinson, Ron and Susan Greenspan, SVMoA Board Director Andie Laporte, and Charles, Sophie, and Susan Sawyers.

The highlight of the evening was a live performance by BMG recording artist and American soul singer Rozzi, fresh off the release of her major label debut album Berry (Deluxe), BMG 2022. Rozzi, who has a personal connection to Sun Valley having visited throughout her life, electrified the audience with an intimate performance of her hit songs Joshua Tree and 66 Days 

Inside the 1940s cottage that houses Sister is a collection of carefully curated garments created by small batch, slow fashion designers from Japan, Italy, France, Turkey, Israel, the USA and more.

Each garment has been carefully crafted of the finest fabrics. Many are one-of-a-kind. Annette, Sister’s owner, has infused her own designs into her boutique with sweaters and clothing that have been hand-loomed, knitted, crochet and embroidered by artisans in Nepal.

Fashionistas from around the world shop in Sister, knowing they will find the perfect article of clothing that has been created using old-world techniques and the time honored craftsmanship that is lost in today’s fast fashion.

When you step into Sister, you sense the preciousness each garment holds and the love of beautiful fabrics, the care, time and intricate workmanship of craftswomen and men.

This is the heart of Sister.

ELEVATING US THROUGH MUSIC

Cellist Gautier Capuçon performs as An Argyros Original Production

There’s something about the cello that connects to the mind, body, and soul all at once. It’s a sound that exudes a proper emotion that captures your attention and holds it. It is elegant but with purpose and direction. And when Gautier Capuçon plays, especially on his 1701 Matteo Goffriller cello “L’Ambassadeur,” we reach a dream state from which no one wants to return.

FEATURE svpn-mag.com 77

Gautier will perform for his second time at the Argyros Performing Arts Center. However, for this visit as An Argyros Original Production, his performance has been solely created for a Sun Valley audience that adores him and appreciates this 21st-century master musician. Gautier will be accompanied by his longtime musical partner and arranger of 26 years, Jérôme Ducros, on piano. They plan to perform a variety of pieces ranging from classical to contemporary works, including opera and movie music, as well as significant cello sonatas from their repertoire.

Born in Chambéry, France, Gautier began playing the cello at five. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris with Philippe Muller and Annie Cochet-Zakine, and later with Heinrich Schiff in Vienna.

“There are two sides to what I love the most about playing the cello,” says Gautier. “The cello allows me to express myself and what I say with my cello in music. I cannot express it in words. We all have different souls, characters, and hearts. It’s what makes every interpretation different and unique. I express and feel emotions that are so strong that I cannot use words. Therefore, I need the cello. And what I love about the cello is I need to share it.”

For Gautier, it is a privilege to express himself with the cello as art and share it with everyone, as it is a vital part of his purpose and mission as a worldclass musician. “To be in a concert hall and feel the audience react and make a musical journey with them is to feel these emotions. I realize more and more every day that this is a privilege,” he says.

Gautier will only play music to which he has an emotional connection. It must speak to him, which is why you will find many of his recordings of classical and contemporary performances with titles such as

78 svpn-mag.com

Souvenirs, Emotions, and Intuition, along with Schumann, Beethoven, and Brahms. “I have one rule, which is always to do a project for the right reasons and never to play music where I don’t feel emotion, or I don’t understand,” he says. “You cannot share your passion if you can’t feel it. It’s like being a comedian or actor. We get into the skin of a composer with a certain culture, period, and story, so I try to get as close to them as I can, and then I can add emotion. It’s all question of balance. The spectrum of music we can share is fascinating.”

Performing with world premiere orchestras, Gautier works with conductors including Lionel Bringuier, Semyon Bychkov, Gustavo Dudamel, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, and Yannick NézetSéguin. In addition, he also collaborates with contemporary

composers including Lera Auerbach, Karol Beffa, Esteban Benzecry, Nicola Campogrande, Qigang Chen, Bryce Dessner, Jérôme Ducros, Henry Dutilleux, Thierry Escaich, Philippe Manoury, Bruno Mantovani, Krzysztof Penderecki, Wolfgang Rihm, and Jörg Widmann.

“I do many different projects,” Gautier says. “When I start a project, it is always for the same reason. I believe in it, and my heart tells me to do it. So, I go from playing charity concerts to performing for sick children in hospitals and performing solo, concerts, and chamber music.”

Besides performing internationally with many of the world’s foremost conductors and instrumentalists, he is also the founder and leader of the “Classe d’Excellence de Violoncelle” at the Foundation Louis Vuitton in

Paris and a passionate ambassador for the Orchestre à l’École Association, which brings classical music to more than 42,000 school children across France. As a result, children have been able to study music at school and play an instrument where most would never have had a chance to do so without this organization.

Gautier has won multiple awards for his expressive musicianship, exuberance, and virtuosity. In January 2022, Gautier launched his foundation to support young and talented musicians at the beginning of their careers, increasing his commitment to young artists. Gautier’s foundation works with young musicians, 18 to 25 years old. In addition, he has conducted a cello class since 2014.

“It is a very challenging time for young musicians,” he says. “When these young musicians finish music school, they are all of a sudden on their own. During COVID, I realized how difficult it was for them, and now it is even more so, which is why I launched the foundation.”

In its first year, Gautier’s foundation helped 11 young musicians worldwide, provided €120,000 in scholarship funding, and created partnerships with concert halls and festivals. However, Gautier always thinks of the big picture and has a long-term vision for these performers, perhaps even coming to The Argyros one day.

“We have created a recording with pianist Kim Bernard,” says Gautier. “A second recording will be created with Warner Classics for next June. The foundation would not have been possible without the help of my dear friends Dan and Martine Drackett. Their support of classical music and art and the younger generation has been extremely generous and important.”

Gautier and Ducros will interrupt a European tour to fly halfway across the world to perform at The Argyros, in an intimate setting, unlike a large concert hall, for only a few days. “Sun Valley is a special place for me,” he says. “The first time I came to Sun Valley was to perform with the Sun Valley Music Festival and Alasdair Neale, who is amazing. It is an extraordinary place and destination. Then, I came last February to perform at The Argyros, which was beautiful. I cannot wait to return and, of course, to ski.” 

MOVIE NIGHT IN SUN VALLEY WITH GEORGE PRENTICE

Sun Valley Film Festival presents exciting new events

Appealing to a broader audience, the Sun Valley Film Festival (SVFF) is programming beyond its annual festival event, March 29-April 2, 2023, to offer more to its patrons and devoted film-going audience. The Sun Valley community and visitors alike can prepare for an exceptional evening with a 2023 Oscar-nominee film discussion with George Prentice, host of NPR’s Morning Edition at Boise State Public Radio, and a sneak preview of the first episode of Netflix’s popular series Outer Banks with actor Charles Esten along with series creator and showrunner Josh Pate.

MOVIE NIGHT IN SUN VALLEY WITH GEORGE PRENTICE

A pillar of SVFF Coffee Talks, a festival favorite since its inception, Idaho’s most regarded journalist George Prentice is one of SVFF’s most celebrated guests, interviewers, and all-around knowledgeable hosts. If you are an Idahoan living in the Wood River Valley, chances are George Prentice is a household name from his years at the Boise Weekly and now at Boise State Public Radio, the local NPR station and, a favorite among many Wood River Valley listeners. As a serious political, criminal justice, healthcare, and business journalist, George views movies as a chance to plug into the other side of life and reveal stories that listeners can appreciate as unique experiences.

82 svpn-mag.com

“I think we’re all looking for something different,” says George. “When we talk about and explore movies, we have a lot of excellent meaningful conversations, especially those bigger conversations that relate to Idaho and our current existence.”

George will bring his popular and fascinating Movie Night, which he launched at The Flicks in Boise, as an event to The Argyros to discuss several of this year’s Oscar-nominated films and engage the audience in some movie trivia, facts, and inside reporting on the nominees with an opportunity to win some prizes, which George garnered directly from movie studios. In addition, the evening will be a celebration of film with SVFF and Boise State Public Radio.

As a regular Toronto Film Festival attendee, George will share his conversations with Sarah Polley, director of Women Talking, The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg, and Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, based in Idaho, and that’s just a start.

George will discuss a range of topics within several of the current Oscar-nominated films gleaned from his interviews. For instance, he shares that The Whale ’s writer Sam Hunter, an Idaho native, said to him, “It’s really easy for cynicism to

masquerade as sophistication or intelligence… Cynicism is cheap and easy. Having faith in other people is way harder than thinking the world is garbage,” providing a much greater sense of meaning and perspective offered by The Whale.

George hopes to channel the audience’s curiosity into a bigger and perhaps deeper meaning in terms of how these films and others inform our lives, along with shaping these stories for the silver screen.

“Having an open discussion along with trivia questions and prizes will make the evening more like a party you’ve always wanted to go to,” says George. “I cannot think of a better place on the planet to have this event than the Wood River Valley because of its love for what is good and, of course, film.”

Dedicated to research, backstory, source material, and where everything plugs into our lives and how it advances the art form, George will explore it all and reveal some exciting news for the 2023 Sun Valley Film Festival. This noteworthy event is a must-attend, with plans to have it be a yearly gathering. 

SVFFIRST LOOK AT OUTER BANKS

In advance of the highly anticipated third season of NETFLIX’s Outer Banks, join SVFF for an SVFFirst Look at episode one with actor Charles Esten, who plays Ward Cameron, and series creator and showrunner Josh Pate at The Argyros. A Q&A will follow the screening with Charles and Josh.

“On the heels of a successful Coffee Talk with the younger cast members at last year’s SVFF, I am thrilled to welcome seasoned actor and friend Charles Esten to Sun Valley to talk about his craft and experience working on Outer Banks,” says Josh. “To share the first episode of season three with our friends in the Wood River Valley in advance of the premiere on February 23, 2023, is a bonus.”

Over the last few years, Charles, a singer, songwriter, and actor, has become best known for his role as Ward Cameron in the NETFLIX global hit show Outer Banks. In addition, Charles plays Deacon Claybourne in ABC/CMT’s Nashville He has performed in hundreds of live concerts, including multiple headline tours in the U.S., Germany, Amsterdam, and the UK, including at the Royal Albert Hall. In early 2020, unfortunately, his central stage performance as part of the famous Country2Country festival in Europe was cut short by the pandemic.

For over a year during the pandemic lockdown, Charles entertained fans virtually with his weekly FacebookLive Quarantine Livestream drawing over 1.5 million views. Charles has resumed live performances, most notably on the Grand Ole Opry, where he has made more than 150 appearances. He was excited to open at The Ryman for Deanna Carter in November 2021. In his adopted hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, Charles serves as the National Honorary Spokesperson for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual “Light The Night” Walk and as a board member and volunteer for Musicians On Call.

When not filming or touring, he continues to write and record his music, with over ten million streams to date. In addition, he holds a 2018 Guinness World Record for releasing 54 original songs available on iTunes and Spotify once a week for 54 consecutive weeks. In May 2022, Charles released a new single, “Worst Day”—a duet with Julia Cole, a CMT Next Women of Country, Class of ’22. “This song is a flat-out upbeat banger about the joy of having that someone you love right there beside you in the good times, and even more especially, in the hard times too!” says Charles, who is currently working on an album of new music for release in 2023. 

VALLEY HOUSING CRISIS RELIEF

Locals share housing stories with Lease to Locals solution

130 svpn-mag.com

The persisting housing crisis afflicting Blaine County is not new, but a viable solution for the immediate future is finally offering some relief. As part of their Housing Action Plan (HAP), the City of Ketchum has piloted a new program known as Lease to Locals. The one-year program, initiated on October 1, 2022, intends to create and unlock housing for residents in need. Based in Truckee, California, Landing Locals has been contracted to oversee operations with more than $400,000 in funding for grants to homeowners who participate.

Landing Locals, founded by Kai and Colin Frolich in March 2019, was created to help solve the housing crisis in vacation towns. They do this through their trusted online platform, which connects homeowners who have underutilized properties or short-term rentals with local tenants needing housing. In addition, the Lease to Locals program further bolsters this effort by providing cash incentives for owners who convert their properties into longer-term rentals.

“The Wood River Valley Lease to Locals program has already seen early indicators of success,” says Colin Frolich, co-founder and CEO of Landing Locals. “Just a few months into the program, we’ve converted ten properties into new seasonal and long-term rentals for locals, and we expect to see continued momentum in 2023.”

According to the 2020 census, 66% of Ketchum’s housing stock is vacant, seasonally occupied, or short-term rented. The local workforce and their employers are largely shouldering the implications of this trend. In turn, the

Wood River Valley is seeing dramatic changes in staffing shortages, shuttered businesses, and the overall culture of an incredibly unique place. Lease to Locals aims to shrink the growing gap between homeowners and community members by encouraging altruism in the name of our neighbors and providing cash incentives of up to $18,000 for those willing to rent their property to a local.

But who are the locals? We decided to feature three individuals who have offered to share their experiences with housing here in the Wood River Valley.

Jill Parker is a Bellevue, Idaho, native who has lived and worked all over the Valley, but you might recognize her from Apple’s Bar & Grill. She had recently settled into a rental at the Limelight Condominiums in Ketchum. “I had a stroke of good luck. It was a nice, unique little place with a view of the mountains. I had an awesome landlord and neighbors, plus the rent was fair,” says Jill. Tragically, Jill’s apartment was one of the 26 homes destroyed by the accidental fire within the complex on September 3, 2022, which also happened to be her birthday. Without rental insurance, she lost everything, most devastatingly, a lifetime of photos and her cat, Lily, who is still missing. “I was a wreck, but my friends were there for me. I’m filled with gratitude for the firefighters,” says Jill.

Fortunately, Jill was put in touch with a second homeowner who was offering her Elkhorn condo to disaster victims. Not only did this give Jill a solid place to get back on her feet, but through Lease to Locals, she and her new landlord both benefited from supplemented rent. “She wanted to help out of the kindness of her heart,” Jill explains of her landlord, “but I am glad that the incentive offered by the program could reward her.”

Alex Kuntz was born and raised here in the Valley but officially moved back to town eight years ago. Since then, she has primarily worked in the food service industry and as a florist in the summer. Alex attempted to strike out on her own after buying a matcha business in 2020. Unfortunately, housing insecurity's financial and mental stress eclipsed her entrepreneurial spirit. Around this time, Alex was unexpectedly forced out of an apartment that had been put on the market. She quickly paid $1,500 a month for an Elkhorn one-bedroom with a mold problem. Then, when the rent increased to $1,800 in the throes of COVID, Alex was sent packing again. These unforeseen circumstances and expenses meant she had to reprioritize basic survival over her dreams.

Without resources or time to save the business, Alex had to let it go. Ultimately, she found a place to live in Hailey, which meant leaving her job as a server at the Grill at Knob Hill in Ketchum. Understandably, she couldn’t manage the 11pm commute home after a long shift, which proved especially treacherous in the winter months. Alex explained that her landlord currently has two people living in trailers in her backyard. “She is trying to help in the ways she can, but she’s just one person who happens to have a little bit of extra land,” says Alex.

Thankfully, through Lease to Locals, Alex and her boyfriend are looking forward to moving into an affordable (and mold-free) home together in Warm Springs. “We make

it work because we love to live here,” she says. “I think the people who can’t afford to buy houses or be super secure work hard because they love this place so much, but where is the breaking point?”

Max Russell moved to town in 2016 and currently works as a land surveyor for a local engineering firm. Unfortunately, like many locals when it comes to housing, Max has been forced to play a losing game of musical rentals. “I’ve lived in nine houses in the past six and a half years, all of which have either sold and become second homes or owners decided it would be more worth their time to rent their places shortterm,” says Max.

Max now lives at the base of Warm Springs on a six-month lease. But, with the building on the market, he is concerned about the threat of being displaced again. “It has made staying here long-term a struggle, even though I picture spending the rest of my life here. The stress of constantly worrying whether I will have to pick up and move again takes its toll,” he says.

A couple of years ago, Max started his own independent carpentry business, for anything from remodels to custom furniture. Unfortunately, he had to shut down the operation with no consistent place to work out of. “Even when looking for work, the first question I get is, ‘Do you have stable housing?’ There was a point in time when I did turn down a job offer because I couldn’t promise the employer that I was even going to be here in a few months,” says Max. “If people don’t start to focus on the housing crisis, all demographics will take a hit, whether financially or just the disappearance of some of the special things we get to enjoy about this place.”

Homeowners, buyers, and renters, respectively, view the topic of housing and the real estate market from different, often conflicting angles. However, a common denominator that anyone with roots here in the Valley can agree on is the beauty of our community. Therefore, it is imperative to encourage a new generation of entrepreneurs, creatives, and visionaries before it is too late because they will build the infrastructure of this town’s future. Lease to Locals offers a platform that has the potential to preserve and lift this community by taking people in. 

A LEGACY OF LOVE

Camp Rainbow Gold

Summer camp submerses children into a unique environment, free from everyday worries and cares, where they are empowered to be themselves, develop new interests, make new friends, and have fun. All children deserve these opportunities, but those with cancer and other challenges face exclusion from most camps due to their substantial medical needs.

Camp Rainbow Gold (CRG) is not most camps. Instead, Camp Rainbow Gold provides emotionally empowering experiences to Idaho children diagnosed with cancer and their families. Primarily known for oncology and family camp programs, they offer teen support groups, family events throughout the year, and college scholarship programs. They have awarded over a million dollars to Idaho children battling cancer and even initiated a new program awarding scholarships to the siblings of these children as well. Elizabeth Lizberg, Camp Rainbow Gold CEO, stresses that “a cancer diagnosis impacts the entire family, and the financial strain is massive, so we try to support everyone as much as we can.”

Hidden Paradise, Fairfield,
Idaho

Celebrating its 40th anniversary of changing lives and healing through nature, CRG only continues to grow. After years of leasing various camps throughout the state, CRG finally found a permanent home in Fairfield, Idaho. The 172-acre property, aptly named “Hidden Paradise,” was purchased in 2019 and was projected to be camp-ready by the summer of 2023. However, plans changed when COVID-19 forced the organization to get creative and go virtual. “It’s hard to make s’mores at home in your kitchen the same as around a campfire with all your friends,” Elizabeth explains. “These kids are already isolated through a cancer diagnosis, stuck at home or inside doctors’ offices.” It became increasingly clear how much these kids needed camp, so the race was on to make it happen.

During the height of the pandemic, CRG worked with the doctors at St. Luke’s Medical Center over a six-month timeline to ensure that camp was in session for the summer of 2021. Despite supply chain issues and strict COVID protocols, the team successfully remodeled 14 buildings into quality, adaptive facilities. With the help of many hands,

CRG successfully held its first camp at the new site two years ahead of schedule. Hidden Paradise proudly stands as Idaho’s only medical camp and will continue to welcome and focus on facilitating groups who otherwise have nowhere else to go. Elizabeth shares, “Our goal is simple: Build a lasting, accessible-to-all summer camp that will serve Idaho’s children, veterans, and families.”

Share Your Heart Ball is the primary fundraiser for Camp Rainbow Gold and the generosity of donors, sponsors, volunteers, and community support make all these incredible programs possible. “All of Camp Rainbow Gold’s programs are free for every child and family member we serve throughout Idaho. It’s because of the generosity of so many, including Share Your Heart Ball, that we can maintain that,” says Christl Holzl, Camp Rainbow Gold Development Director.

After a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the highly anticipated event returns to the Limelight Ballroom at the

Sun Valley Inn on Saturday, February 18, 2023. There will be dinner, dancing, and auction items that will get paddles high in support and celebration of Idaho’s families fighting cancer. Featured auction items include a culinary tour of Santorini, Greece, for two, as well as a local flag football day and barbeque hosted by retired quarterback Carson Palmer. In addition, the event’s guest speaker will be Ketchum’s very own Paula Shaffer, a standing supporter of the cause and owner of Valley Apothecary. As Elizabeth explains, that “The biggest challenge is ensuring that our gratitude is fully expressed and felt by the Wood River Valley and the amazing community of supporters.” This year’s event highlights what Christl refers to as “a legacy of love” and she emphasizes, “We aren’t only celebrating the kids and families, but also the donors who have been supporting us through our 40 years. They are a part of our legacy.” 

SOLDIER ON

Soldier Mountain is a mainstay for our adventure lifestyle

‘Family-friendly’ has defined Soldier Mountain since its humble beginnings in 1947 when friends Bob Frostenson and Hurry Durall founded the Fairfield, Idaho, ski area while visiting Sun Valley to watch the Olympic Team Tryouts. Since then, it’s had a handful of different owners, experienced drought and plenty, and survived a destructive wildfire in 2020. However, the lifts are still humming along at this iconic, historic ski area. Clearly, this little gem in Idaho is here to stay.

142 svpn-mag.com

Born and raised in the Magic Valley, I grew up skiing on this mountain in the late ‘60s when friends introduced my parents to the ski area. I remember the first clumsy, jerking pulls on the rope tow and the beginner’s class where we learned how to navigate our skis and do a snowplow. I remember how thrilling yet scary it was to finally progress from the J-bar to the Poma lift. My father joined the ski patrol and eventually became an advanced instructor.

In the late fall, the owners allowed those patrol and ski instructor families to park their travel trailers at the far end of the parking lot. The snow would pile up and all but bury the trailers. Then, on Friday evenings, when we made our way up to Soldier for a ski weekend, we’d have to tunnel and shovel a path to the door of our cozy, lantern-lit ‘snow cave.’ There was nothing like waking to the hum of the lifts firing up on a Saturday morning. At the end of the season, there was always a chili feed and a torchlight parade. Looking back from a ten-year-old’s perspective, those were the glory days. We were a Soldier family. It was a magical, memorable time.

The most recent owners of Soldier Mountain ski area, a group of six investors—all skiers, boarders, and backcountry enthusiasts—have a clear vision for maintaining that beloved, nostalgic atmosphere while making valuable changes to propel the resort into the future. General Manager Paul Alden, the only Idaho resident of the group, had visited the mountain 30 years ago while running volunteer events for the intermountain region. An event scheduled at Sun Valley had to be moved to Soldier. He didn’t return until March 2020, when the other five Utah-based investors asked him to explore

the for-sale opportunity. The outcome of that trip was that Alden set the purchase in motion. Now 86, Alden refers to his position at Soldier as his “fourth failure at retirement.” He’s spent 40 years in the snow sports industry, from ten years at Burton Snowboards to operating a family business that installed most ski lifts requiring helicopters in the western U.S. He diligently worked in the early days to get snowboarding permitted on various mountains in the U.S. and to be admitted as an Olympic event. During his first “retirement,” Alden, a Level 2 snowboard instructor, taught at Targhee for 22 years.

“We bought Soldier because it’s a fantastic little ski area,” explains Alden. “It’s a gem that was slowly dying away. It just needed more attention, and we knew we could give it some.”

Soldier offers skiing and snowboarding on 35 named trails, a terrain park, a magic carpet, a tubing hill, and 2,000 acres of snowcat-accessible private powder up to 10,095 feet. In addition, it has two chairlifts reaching an altitude of up to 7,177 feet. To this day, its lodge restaurant serves homemade fare, while The Fox Den Pub provides guests with a cozy spot to hang out after a great day on the mountain.

Alden says that guests will enjoy an improved on-mountain experience this winter. Snow-making capabilities have been up and running. At the top of Chair 1, the resort trackpacked every run to ensure a good base throughout the season, and the acquisition of a new tiller has made for even better grooming. This past summer, they had key runs mowed at the top of Chair 2, allowing snow to stick better and so that the resort to open trails earlier and remain open longer.

In addition, Soldier Mountain has upgraded its wireless network reception range and deployed three SNAPD action cameras—one at the top of the magic carpet, one as skiers and riders unload Chair 1, and a third near the top of Chair 2 with a picturesque mountain backdrop. The camera systems are designed to work like those at amusement parks. They automatically capture guests as they pass by, leveraging

RFID technology to identify guests and allow them to access their pictures online or via a smartphone app. This same technology was also added for lift access and online sales, making for one of the best technology platforms to modernize business operations. EVERY DAY A SECOND CHANCE

Men’s Second Chance Living leads the way

A few years ago, Sonya Wilander volunteered to advocate for people facing drug and alcohol charges in the local criminal justice system. Through her work in the adult felony drug court, she began to see a need for services that didn’t exist in the Wood River Valley.

“There weren’t advocates that catered to men,” she says, reflecting on the beginning of Men’s Second Chance Living (MSCL), a nonprofit she now oversees as executive director.

MSCL opened its first sober house in 2018 with the support of a small group of professionals and donors dedicated to helping individuals get their lives back on track.

To date, the organization has assisted 47 men and now supports 14 at any given time across its two sober houses in Hailey. As a nonprofit, MSCL is unique among sober houses. Most are for profit, says Wilander, and religious organizations run many others.

The men come from across Idaho’s 5th judicial district, often straight from in-patient treatment or incarceration. With MSCL, they can live in a safe, supportive environment where rebuilding and connection with the community and their families are possible. “Everybody works at a different speed,” says Wilander.

Middle: Men’s Second Chance Living Kristin Hovencamp runs the financial literacy/education classes.

Bottom: Men’s Second Chance Living home in Hailey.

The average stay in MSCL’s sober houses is around six months. Some stay for just a few months, while others wait a year and a half. “Best practices state that the longer you’re in sober living, the better your chances of long-term recovery,” says Wilander.

First, incoming residents must commit to sobriety and set personal goals with Wilander and her staff. Second, they must find a job within two weeks of moving into one of the two homes. Third, they share chores, have house meetings, and submit to random drug testing within group living.

Through MSCL, residents participate in a wide range of programs: from medical and mental health to substance abuse treatment, and finance and nutrition classes; the nonprofit is committed to providing support for all aspects of recovery. Residents can also utilize a matched savings program, gym memberships, and additional health services.

Among their activities, MSCL arranges group volunteering and recreation, supporting each man’s overall well-being. And sometimes they have fun together: snowshoeing at Galena Lodge or grabbing a burger at the Power House.

“It’s all those wraparound services that can help a person have a better chance,” says Wilander of her commitment to teaching life skills and supporting the men where they are.

Collaborations are critical to these programs, and many organizations and individuals provide support at reduced or no charge. Among them are St. Luke’s, Family Health Services, The Hunger Coalition, Sun Valley Resort, the Wood River YMCA, and Gravity Fitness, as well as local behavioral health counselors and wealth management advisors.

Wilander stresses the importance of creating an environment where the men are supported but held accountable and experience some independence that will set them up for future success.

148 svpn-mag.com

“More and more research shows that an encouraging support system makes a recovery much easier,” she says. “But, that’s always a balancing act of giving a handout or giving a hand up.”

When a participant wants to go back to school or apply for job training, MSCL provides supporting funds—but the individual has to fill in the rest, which includes balancing other expenses like the sober homes’ modest rents or car payments.

The support found within the houses is just as crucial to recovery as all the opportunities and requirements of MSCL programs. “Social-environmental factors are strong predictors of positive outcomes in recovery,” Wilander says.

Residents find companionship and nourishment while living alongside others who’ve experienced the same struggles. They organize group meals and play pool on a donated table in the garage, building relationships long after they leave the sober house.

Wilander sees substance abuse as a multi-dimensional disorder that affects all parts of a person. There are biological, psychological, and social effects of struggling with mental health, low socioeconomic situations, parents with addiction, or experiencing other traumas. However, many life factors put individuals at risk for substance abuse.

“We have to take away the moral aspect of it and look at it as a disease,” says Wilander of substance abuse and addiction. “There’s still the idea that it’s a moral choice.” Wilander thinks awareness of this distinction is growing, but there’s still work to be done.“Eventually, people will realize that when people turn to drugs and alcohol, they don’t perceive a choice,” says MSCL administrative assistant Heather Stark.

“When trying to cover that trauma, you’ll try anything, whatever it is.”

For those working with the residents, such as Wilander and Stark, compassion is central to understanding what these men have experienced and what they need to move forward.

“There’s a lot of shame and guilt, so people often don’t feel worthy or respected,” says Wilander, “and they don’t respect themselves.”

The small-but-mighty MSCL staff works daily to counter these self-perceptions, treating the men with respect, so they’ll understand that they deserve a second chance.

“In treating people with dignity, there’s a gain of worth,” says Stark. “You need external validation before you can develop that internal validation, so being treated with dignity gives these men enough time to develop that internal sense of worth.”

However, giving men a “second chance” doesn’t imply that they’ve ruined their first one. Many haven’t had a healthy and supportive environment, emphasizes Wilander. Sometimes, a person’s first chance is no chance at all.

MSCL works to give men who are committed to sobriety a second chance to improve their lives.

And that benefits everyone, according to Wilander. “The cost of this is way more beneficial to our tax dollars than jail and prison,” she says. “Once you start that cycle, it’s very difficult to get out. So I think we’re doing the biggest job of helping somebody remain in the community, be active with their families and children, be productive, be working.”

After residents experience sober house living, MSCL hopes that they will become more engaged and productive community members.

“The whole community is affected if we don’t help them,” Wilander says. “We can get them back. They’re all good guys, just trying.”

“They have children. They are members of our community, so we need them,” she says. “They are important to our community. They are working hard to be a part of our community, and we at MSCL are helping them.” 

SNOWMOBILING IN THE SAWTOOTHS

Over the River and Through the Woods Never Looked So Good

Carl E. J. Eliason’s 1927 “motor toboggan” patent stands out as the forerunner of the modern snowmobile, a wooden toboggan fitted with two skis, steered by ropes, and pushed along by a steel-cleated track powered by an outboard motor. While not the first snow vehicle to be designed, his was the first to be massproduced and reliable for the rider, forever changing winter recreationally and functionally, especially in the mountains. Fast-forward to today’s new era of sleds creating wilderness experiences like never before. These are not your grandfather’s snow machines—they’re more light weight and have more power and the latest technology for an engineered ride of effortless control, comfort, and convenience.

Nowhere is the sport of snowmobiling more popular than in the Sawtooth Valley, thanks to the collaboration of the Salmon River Snowmobile Club, the Stanley community, Smiley Creek, and the U.S. Forest Service. It is one of the most convenient ways to experience the backcountry. Thousands of acres of plush powder and hundreds of miles of groomed trails can plunge you deep into the winter landscape of the Sawtooth and White Cloud Wilderness foothills and the Stanley Basin, with incredible up-close and personal views of jagged peaks and access to favorite alpine lakes.

Wood River Valley native Jeremy Lato has found a deep connection and purpose through the sport of snowmobiling. As a child, he became infatuated with snow machines and

the ability to access backcountry ski terrain. And once he got hold of the throttle, he didn’t let go. Now, he lives and breathes the lifestyle. As a resident of the Sawtooth Valley, he knows inside and out the bountiful winter paradise surrounding Smiley Creek and Stanley.

Snowmobiling provides winter transportation in and out of the remote ranch Lato manages. He has fulfilled his dream of becoming a sponsored athlete with Zbroz Racing and is in his second year as a Polaris Ambassador. “My role with Polaris enables me to represent, promote, and be a part of a brand and company I truly believe in and ultimately rely on every day,” says Lato. “The mountains here are special, and I love the time I get to spend here, no matter the season or mode of transportation.”

Watching expert snowmobilers like Lato is like watching bareback bronc riding—‘just hold on and let’er buck.’ This is hard-core, sped-up winter play, the machinations of which resemble a combination of mountain biking, snow, jet, and water-skiing maneuvers, always in heaps of powder. And all the better at 9-10,000 feet in altitude.

For Zbroz Racing, Lato produces media content and promotes and tests products. Lato also works with the Friends of Sawtooth Avalanche Center in their educational presentations and is a vigorous advocate for assuring and maintaining riding terrain opportunities.

But you don’t have to be a hard-core enthusiast to experience Idaho powder, epic views, and rippin’ sleds. This new era of lightweight machines means getting out on one for the first time will bring a new thrill. Snowmobiling is one of the most accessible motorized recreational activities to learn, making it suitable for individuals of all ages to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle in the winter.

A 30-mile groomed snowmobile trail connects Stanley to Smiley Creek, where at either location, you can rent machines to ride through the stunning winter landscape of spruce forests and aspen groves paralleling the granite gray ribbon of the Salmon River. This trail can be traveled round trip or one-way, provided that shuttle arrangements are made. Snowmobile rentals generally begin in mid-December and run through the end of March, depending upon snow and trail conditions, and reservations are recommended.

Sleds are available to rent at Smiley Creek Lodge, where you can follow the groomed trails or quickly get off the beaten path. In addition, they offer guides to rent for extra riding tips or to explore and learn about the area’s history. Rentals in Stanley are available at Sawtooth Traxx, where they maintain a fleet of Polaris snowmobiles. “Helmets and the first tank of gas are provided, and if you are underprepared, we also rent bibs, jackets, and boots if needed, with gloves, balaclavas (head socks), and hand warmers for sale,” says Sawtooth Traxx owner Todd Sams. The most popular and scenic is the trail out of town up and over Nip and Tuck Road and on out to Stanley Lake. If you’re on the Wood River Valley side of Galena Summit, Lato suggests Baker Creek for first-time snowmobilers for its huge wide-open meadows and rolling foothills avoiding avalanche terrain. “I cannot stress enough,” says Lato, “to ensure you have the proper equipment and learn how to use it. It’s also wise to hire a guide or take a Level 1 avalanche class if you want to poke into terrain prone to avalanche activity.”

This winter’s snowpack leaves plenty of fun for February rippin’ through the woods, so get out on a sled! 

MODERN MOUNTAIN KITCHEN

“We had been working on plans for a remodel of a family vacation home for several months when our Bay Area clients decided to make the move permanently (another COVIDprecipitated decision),” says Allison Connolly, owner of Allison Paige Interior Design. “As both halves of the couple are skilled chefs and appreciators of good food and wine, we needed to provide them with a fully equipped kitchen. And for those of you who have visited Mackay lately, you know the views go on for miles, but the fine dining options are limited. L uckily, our plans were well underway, and we didn’t have to wait a year and a half for appliances. My clients took a leap of faith and decided to go with a stove alcove design per my advice. The end result meets both form and function, and fortunately, my clients could not be happier in their remote mountain home.”

FINDING STABILITY

Mental and Holistic Wellness for Ourselves

To feel well, it is essential to find stability inside ourselves. We will not find this in the external world, not today. Today the world is in chaos, deliberate confusion, and fraught with distress, disorder, and anxiety. Therefore, we must be self-directed, conscious people. For this reason, and for our mental wellness, we need to be mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually healthy.

Perhaps anxiety and mental distress start at an early age. Often, I wonder if our school systems foster an independent-thinking child who seeks and pursues the truth. In fact, by being so achievement-oriented, we may be achieving the opposite of the desired result. In his book In Praise of Slowness: Challenging

the Cult of Speed, Carl Honore cites a study by Kathy HirshPasek comparing children in a play-based nursery versus an academic nursery, in which “children from the more relaxed, slower environment turned out less anxious, more eager to learn, and better able to think independently.” So often, I see children seeking this type of environment with a slower pace and fewer activities, but the parents cannot be convinced to slow it down.

Fast-forward to high school and college. It is estimated that 31% of teens have an anxiety disorder. According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly one in three adolescents ages 13 to 18 will experience an anxiety disorder. Anxiety is the top concern among college students at 41.6 percent, followed by depression at 36.4 percent. Additionally, 45% of high school students report feeling stressed all the time. According to the American

162 svpn-mag.com

Psychological Association, people aged 18-33 suffer the highest stress levels nationwide. Alarmingly, psychologist Robert Leahy points out: “The average high school kid today has the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the early 1950s.” The American Psychological Association reports that teens have higher stress levels than adults. Going on to college-aged students, suicide is currently the second leading cause of death. No amount of childhood achievement is worth this.

More than one in five American adults took medications for psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression in 2010, according to new research by Medco Health Solutions, Inc. in a study titled America’s State of Mind. This is a 20% increase in the past decade in the use of drugs for mental disorders. Indeed today, that rate may be doubled. The research on these medications shows that suicide, erratic behavior, and societal

disconnect increase over time. According to research by Dr. Anil Nischal, some evidence suggests that medications may cause the worsening of suicidal ideas. Medications can also cause unknown side effects in some cases. But there are natural solutions out there.

Anxiety needs to be approached in many ways. The underlying causes are feeling overwhelmed, overstimulated, disconnected, and disoriented. There is a movement in education away from the frenzied pace of high-achieving and accomplishment-oriented school systems to ones who are co-creative, collaborative, projectoriented, outdoor-oriented, and inspired by relationships and respect for others. Our teachers, especially ones that connect with and see our children for who they are and pull out the best in them, are treasures of our society.

In our clinic, for anxiety, depression, and traumabased work, we use a combination of neurologicallyfocused techniques such as neurofeedback and QNRT. Neurotherapy begins by assessing the brain with an EEG and collecting objective data that readily determines anxiety patterns, depression, trauma, processing issues, and more. Then, in a series of sessions, the brain can be trained through neurofeedback sessions, using audio and video feedback loops, to healthy efficient patterns, and anxiety, depression, and impulsivity can quickly be corrected. Sessions are about 20 minutes. This is an invaluable therapy in our clinic to quickly resolved complex cases of anxiety and depression.

Hopefully, we will quickly learn that the human race cannot sustain such high stress levels, and our precious children deserve to feel connected, safe, grounded, and capable of handling each day of dear life. Therefore, our goal should be one of mental and holistic wellness. 

HEART DISEASE

164 svpn-mag.com

Perhaps your New Year’s resolutions include eating healthier, drinking less alcohol, exercising more, or losing weight, and your motivation may be to look better or feel better. Those are great reasons, but we may or may not be also thinking about the possibility of having or thwarting heart disease. Heart disease can include a range of conditions that affect the heart. Many are preventable or treatable with healthy lifestyle choices.

WHAT IS HEART DISEASE?

There are many types of heart disease. Most fall into one or a combination of specific areas of heart function and include:

 Conditions that affect the blood vessels that supply the heart with blood to enable it to do work, most commonly referred to as atherosclerosis or coronary artery disease (CAD)

 Conditions of the electrical system that helps control and coordinate heart function, e.g., irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias)

 Conditions that affect the normal behavior or function of the heart pumping chambers and heart muscle, collectively known as cardiomyopathies, of which there are several types

 Abnormal function of the heart valves, which normally ensure that the right amount of blood is pumped in the right direction to the right place at the right time

 Heart problems you’re born with (congenital heart defects)

Given the variety of types of heart conditions, let’s focus on one of the most common and most important conditions, coronary artery disease (CAD), which is also one of the most preventable and manageable conditions based on appropriate lifestyle choices and interventions.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common heart disease in the United States. It involves a narrowing of the blood vessels that supply blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the heart. It invariably involves the deposition of oxidized LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, often referred to as the “bad cholesterol” fraction) in the wall of the blood vessel, leading to a long-term, very low-grade type of chronic inflammation, which causes other inflammatory-related chemicals and substances to accumulate slowly and develops into what is referred to as an atherosclerotic plaque.

Over time, this plaque can become large enough to narrow the blood vessel lumen and limit blood flow through the blood vessel to the heart, causing symptoms that interfere with activities (angina) and can even sometimes deteriorate suddenly, resulting in a heart attack that can permanently damage some of the heart muscle and even lead to death. Anginal symptoms are often induced by a certain level of activity and can be relieved by avoiding or decreasing that level of activity. On the other hand, heart attack symptoms most commonly occur and persist when not doing physical activity and cannot be relieved by resting or avoiding activity.

A large majority of the time, coronary artery disease symptoms involve an element of chest discomfort, although not invariably, and may be different for men and women. For instance, men are more likely to have predominantly chest discomfort, although other symptoms may occur along with the discomfort. Women are more likely to have other symptoms along with chest discomfort, such as shortness of breath, nausea, and

extreme fatigue. Symptoms can range from chest discomfort or burning to shortness of breath, nausea, lightheadedness, pain in the arms or shoulder, pain radiating up in the neck and jaw and throat, discomfort in the upper belly area or upper back, or sometimes can be subtle enough that they are not recognized as a problem.

The risk of coronary artery disease is heavily influenced by lifestyle and several potentially avoidable or manageable risk factors. Particularly important among these are frequent regular exercise (avoiding a “sedentary” lifestyle), healthy diets such as the Mediterranean or the Diet Against Systolic Hypertension (DASH diet), checking for abnormal cholesterol/lipid profiles, and treating them when present. Other important risk factors include treating and controlling high blood pressure, avoiding or stopping tobacco smoking, and the appropriate treatment of diabetes. Additionally, good supportive social interactions and involvement and stress

management strategies (such as meditation, mindfulness, yoga, etc.) have been shown to contribute to the prevention and treatment of CAD.

While many people are aware that these may impact CAD, they also need to appreciate how effective intervention for these risk factors can be. Not only do these measures help prevent the development of CAD, but they can also be very effective in improving symptoms and outcomes once CAD has developed, stabilizing and sometimes even causing some regression of coronary artery disease and reducing the need for medications, stents, or surgery to manage the consequences of CAD. It is essential to mention that, in many cases, elevated LDL cholesterol levels have a genetic component. Therefore, optimally preventing CAD or treating established CAD requires medications to lower LDL cholesterol levels by the necessary amount. Fortunately, multiple different

medications can achieve this, so in most cases, an effective, well-tolerated treatment is available.

It’s essential to watch for heart symptoms and discuss concerns with your healthcare provider. CAD disease can sometimes be found early with regular health checkups.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

 Eat a healthy diet emphasizing healthy proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and monounsaturated oils (olive and canola oil) and limiting salt, alcohol, added sugars, and highly processed food. This can be beneficial by lowering cholesterol, decreasing the potential to develop diabetes, and lowering blood pressure. The American Heart Association has helpful tips on how you and your family can be successful in your choices at home, work, or out and about.

 Aim for 150 minutes of significant exercise per week, although 300 minutes provides even more protection.

DON’T HAVE A PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER?

Call the Center for Community Health at 208.727.8733 for help finding the right provider. In a life-threatening or severe condition, call 911 immediately or go directly to the nearest emergency department.

Start small and increase gradually if you’re beginning or restarting an exercise program. Before starting an exercise regime, check with your physician and discuss what is suitable for your body and goals.

 Periodically check in with your medical provider about your cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

 Learn to recognize your stressors and practice managing them, e.g., relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga, etc.

 Stay connected and involved with others.

 Check out the “blue zones”—these are certain areas worldwide where the inhabitants’ lifestyles result in the longest and healthiest outcomes. You can search blue zones online or in bookstores. 

ALWAYS A PARTY, AND ALL EARS

Andy Frasco & the U.N. return to Ketchum

Live music lovers get ready because Andy Frasco & the U. N. are more than prepared to serve up the rock ‘n’ roll concert experience at The Argyros in Ketchum, Idaho, this coming March. A known and celebrated performer to Ketchum audiences, pre-pandemic, Andy Frasco’s all-in vibe and energy on stage, in the crowd, and throughout his music never disappointed. But during COVID, Andy had to hunker down and sit it out like the rest of us. Having just moved to Denver, Colorado, the Los Angeles-based native and musician decided that connection was more important than ever and went online, never looking back.

Creating dance parties supported by Relix, Brooklyn Bowl, and Twisted Tea gave Andy a platform to keep his show going. And his ever-trending Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance with Somebody online lip sync with the stars of the jam band musician community allowed Andy to keep the creative juices flowing for us all. “I know my role in this community,” says Andy. “I try to glue everyone together—fans and musicians. It’s my goal as a frontman. Musicians don’t take time off. So, if I’m struggling, I know those continuously touring are also struggling.”

Keeping fans connected and his music alive, Andy’s following continued to grow, but he was in a new frontier, and it was time for a change. “When you do this show online for 200,000 people and turn off your computer, you realize

you’re alone in an empty home. I loved doing it, and I am thankful for how it helped people because it helped me. I am for the people,” he shares.

Beyond the studio and stage, Andy began to travel down a newfound path to better mental health and entered the podcast world. During the beginning of the pandemic especially, Andy says he forgot about music in favor of investigating his mental health through the podcast, where he has interviewed the likes of Tony Hawk, Khruangbin, Melissa Etheridge, Bert Kreischer, and Stevie Van Zandt. Today, his weekly podcast, Andy Frasco’s World Saving Podcast, is one of the country’s tops, with 218 episodes and counting, with everything from celebrities to music, along with comedy, life, and love.

“When you have your head down doing your work, you don’t see the light on the other side,” he says. “It gave me hope and karma. You give as much as you take, and I was thankful it all reciprocated. I think people realize it’s not just a party. There’s a different side to me and look to me for the softer and more delicate sides of life. The podcast is like a stew of optimism.”

When life began to turn back to normal, Andy & the U.N. found themselves at Red Rocks performing for 200 people, as one of his first live performances out of

lockdown. “It meant a great deal to me to play at Red Rocks, but now we’re the biggest we have ever been,” says Andy. “We sold out our fall tour for 25 shows. It’s been surreal, and all my dreams are coming true.”

Always ahead of the curve, Andy Frasco & the U.N. continues to deliver the music and live performances enthusiastically. Their latest album, Wash, Rinse, Repeat, from Andy’s label, Fun Machine Records, is full of well-written songs and exciting collaborative efforts. Written across the country with members of Dashboard Confessional, 3oh!3, Doom Flamingo, AWOLnation, and others, Wash, Rinse, Repeat is Andy Frasco & the U.N.’s authentic self sans the filters. Andy has put it all out there, from his addictions and breaking bad habits to getting through the tough times—it’s a valiant effort. There are so many great songs, including the tongue-in-cheek stomper Dancin’ Around My Grave written with Charleston bands Susto and Doom Flamingo in which Andy plans his funeral if he dies young—accompanied by a video depicting a Lakers-themed service—he’s a lifelong fan.

“This was my chance to learn my craft and fall in love with songwriting again,” he says. “This is me. This is how I feel. I’m not trying to write songs for other people anymore. I’m just trying to write songs that help me. And hopefully, through that, help others, too.”

Although Andy’s maturity level has risen, he has hardly lost his gusto for entertaining, as Andy Frasco & the U.N. has been cranking out the tunes with a new album on the way. So expect the show you have been missing with a group that has been together for 12 years with Shawn Eckels on guitar, Andee “Beats” Avila on drums and vocals, Floyd Kellogg on bass guitar, and Ernie Chang on saxophone. 

Douglas Aagard, John Horejs, and Neal Philpott

Reception | Friday, February 17, 5-7:30pm

Douglas Aagard draws on the Utah landscape as his source of inspiration. His subjects vary from the mountain pines and cedars to the farmland in between, and all are linked by his intriguing use of texture and light combined with a vibrant color palette.

John Horejs is one of our longest-standing artists and remains a favorite among clients and fellow artists. His elegant landscapes are painted using only seven colors plus white and convey a sense of warmth through the application of an entirely red underpainting.

Tuck Fauntleroy Burn

Tuck Fauntleroy’s focus for his Burn series is wildfire-affected regions in Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. They represent a diverse perspective, with some images shot aerially, and others shot from the ground. Like much of his other work, the aerial images were captured flying over the territory via small single-engine airplanes from an open window for an unobstructed lens.

Burn is timely and relevant in the current environment of climate change and the proliferation of recent fires across the western U.S. and globally. The massive 1988 Yellowstone fires were a wake-up call and significant warning of destruction and foreshadowing of the cost of climate events. Warming, drought, and the resulting fires have never been more dangerous.

The photographs are careful compositions of positive and negative space while capturing the elegant lines and shapes created by a natural landscape scarred by flame. Critical to the series is the idea of taking something more commonly perceived as unsightly, destructive, and negative and making it beautiful, elegant, and engaging.

178 svpn-mag.com

“To me, the work has a meditative quality and feel that is similar to Waterline. And while the aesthetics are quite graphic, they are calming and peaceful at the same time. I like to think of the winter season as a time for the land itself to rest. Zero human activity, the silence of falling snow in one of the most remote places on earth is enchanting and reflective,” says the artist. “Hopefully, the viewer finds the beauty that results from the juxtaposition of the violent event that transformed the environment and the resulting aesthetic. In that space, there’s hope of discovering a healing element that a landscape at rest is pristine and peaceful—it inspires promise.”

Exploring formal painting qualities, Thai Mainhard captures shape, light, color, and multiple planes that establish the complexities of human emotions in her paintings. Within these works lie abstract autobiographical elements that present the artist in unique, vulnerable, and deeply personal moments. The compositions featured in Find Me in the Garden showcase the power of expression and tie these works to the lineage of a greater history of human expression, conveying the lasting desire to connect people through building visual imagery.

Born and raised in Brazil with strong Italian and Spanish heritage, Thai Mainhard moved to California in 2010. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Mainhard lives and works in Los Angeles, California.

Through experimentation and self-teaching, Ken Peloke has learned to use all of his past works, whether it be landscapes, people, animals, abstracts, design, and photography, in his current work. A move to Scottsdale, Arizona, inspired a current direction, with Peloke finding inspiration by spending time with his wife’s horses. Peloke has discovered their beauty, their athleticism, and also their innocence. His bold, large-scale pieces capture the pure essence of the horse while still challenging his artistic talents. His multimedia approach creates depth and incredible realism in his pieces, giving them a one-of-a-kind contemporary appeal.

Theodore Waddell & James Cook Seen With the Brush

This two-person exhibition of paintings by Theodore Waddell and James Cook explores dual interpretations of the western landscape. Waddell’s stylistic approach has become iconic across the western states and beyond. His paintings reveal themselves as something frozen in time, something captured. His subject is nature and the animals existing within these wide-open spaces. The artist’s newest book, Tucker Plays the Back Nine, will be available at the gallery. James Cook brings scenes from nature to life with each impasto brush stroke on the canvas. His painting style evokes the impressionistic approach of capturing the essence of an instantaneous moment with a focus on movement and light. Cook’s subtle abstraction and attention to color create vibrant panoramas that awake the senses. This two-person exhibition will feature new work by both artists, offering a fresh perspective on long-established artists.

Carolyn Olbum and Raphaëlle Goethals Here and Now

“Isn’t that all we really have?” asks Carolyn Olbum, whose sculptures of discarded tree limbs, rotten roots, and dried vines tell a story of regeneration. Abstract painter Raphaëlle Goethals challenges space and time with ethereal compositions that root us in a present moment of beauty. Olbum weaves nature and art together through organic forms and scavenged objects. She immortalizes and recontextualizes her findings by casting them in bronze to create visual poetry, or what she calls “sculptural haiku.” Olbum gracefully translates environmental fragments into a cohesive whole, which take on a life of their own. Raphaëlle Goethals is known for her signature layered encaustics and sophisticated minimalism, fusing to create nonrepresentational masterpieces. Her works are void of any sense of gravity, with emphasis on light, texture, and emotive color. Similar to Olbum’s ability to capture and freeze her subject, Goethals suspends the viewer weightlessly in front of her morphing galaxies.

Friesen+Lantz Fine Art

Turning Tides

First Anniversary Celebration | February 10, 5-7pm

Gallery Walk

February 17, 5-7:30pm

Friesen+Lantz Fine Art’s first anniversary exhibition will feature new work from environmentally conscious artist Steve Jensen. Based in Seattle, Washington, Jensen offers glimpses into our cultural past through found objects, recycled materials, and a deep desire to take what we discard today and make it sacred and beautiful for tomorrow.

Descended from a long line of Norwegian fishermen, Jensen uses the same boat-making tools of his forefathers when creating his work. As a result, his sculptures appear ageless, as if dredged from unknown depths instead of being made of recycled glass, metal, and found objects.

“I have been using recycled materials for over 35 years. I pick steel off the beach. I love finding salvaged boat materials, especially portholes and sailboat parts. It’s always exciting to figure out how to make something beautiful out of something that was discarded.”

The message of Jensen’s boats is cross-cultural and reflects the influence of his extensive travels, including in Egypt, Kenya, Tahiti, India, China, Thailand, Antarctica, and Iceland. As a result, those who view his work may recall their ancestry, regardless of the origin of their family line.

“For me, the boats are meant to symbolize a voyage or journey. Perhaps it is the voyage to the other side or the journey into the unknown,” he says.

Cultivating work that has a deeper meaning, whether by raising awareness of our environmental impact or celebrating the interconnectedness of the human condition, Friesen+Lantz vows to continue bringing insightful, personal, and powerful art to Sun Valley. The Color of Sound

Through March 18, 2023 191

The Color of Sound explores the relationship between art and synesthesia, the neurological phenomenon that allows some people to experience one sense through another. It features artwork by artists who are synesthetes as well as work by artists who, though not synesthetes, seek to create multisensory experiences for viewers. Synesthesia can take a wide variety of forms (perceiving letters or numbers as colors, for example, or associating a word with a scent or taste), but perception of sound as color or as shape has been particularly powerful for artists seeking to translate music into visual art form. The artwork in the exhibition ranges from paintings, drawings, and sculptures inspired by the synesthetic experience of music to film projections and an immersive installation.

Artist Brad Johnson has long been interested in creating multisensory experiences for viewers and listeners. For this exhibition, the Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) commissioned Johnson to create an immersive installation that envelops visitors in light and sound. Lost in Deep Time blends composer Andy Akiho’s 2017 piano quintet Prospects of a Misplaced Year with digital environments derived from photographs and scans Johnson has made in different Pacific Northwest landscapes, ranging from Idaho’s Black Magic Canyon to the glaciers of Washington’s Mount Adams. Johnson’s installation uses multiple projections and sound to engulf visitors in light, pattern, imagery, and music.

Two films by pioneering animator and director Mary Ellen Bute (1906-1983) translate the aural experience of musical compositions into visual animations. Rhythm in Light (1934) and Color Rhapsodie (1948) illustrate Bute’s creative range and development. She first filmed in black and white using objects like paper models, eggbeaters, and jewelry to create abstract patterns, and later made films using drawn animation cells in color.

In addition to Johnson’s immersive installation and Bute’s films, the exhibition includes three bodies of paintings, drawings, and sculptures by artists who draw on the experience of synesthesia as inspiration for palette, composition, and imagery. The prolific Colorado-based painter and synesthete Vance Kirkland (1904-1981) only publicly discussed his experience of synesthesia toward the end of his life. Throughout his career, his paintings reflected the fact that Kirkland, a classical music enthusiast, saw color when he listened to music. He spoke of “transposing sounds into colors” in his work—allowing the music to determine his palette—with a preference for unusual tonalities or the bright notes of vocal classical music. The exhibition includes seven of Kirkland’s paintings, from early watercolor paintings based on landscapes to late, abstract canvases inspired by a growing fascination with outer space and the cosmos.

The exhibition also includes three works by the painter Daniel Mullen, who collaborated with artist, writer, and filmmaker Lucy Cordes Engelman on a series of paintings that seek to convey Engelman’s personal experience of synesthesia. Made with thin layers of paint on exposed linen, these hard-edged geometric paintings use pattern and color to give viewers an experience that

is optically kinetic. Titled Future Monuments, the series “attempts to assign visual corollaries to the amorphous experiences of sound, movement, light, and shadow.”

Artist Anne Patterson’s practice ranges from works on paper to large-scale installations. A synesthete who sees shape and color when she hears sound, Patterson incorporates multisensory experiences into her work, combining architecture, sculpture, light, video, music, and scent in her most immersive and interactive projects. This exhibition includes three separate bodies of Patterson’s work: a set of her process drawings, which combine her notes with quick sketches and help viewers better understand the way her experience of sound informs her visual work; two sculptures made of steel, resin, and piano wire that become kinetic when hung in space; and a month of small watercolor drawings inspired by Clemency Burton-Hill’s book Year of Wonder: Classical Music to Enjoy Day by Day. A listening station accompanies Patterson’s Year of Wonder installation, allowing visitors to hear the music that inspired each of her drawings.

PIONEER SALOON

Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

THE SAWTOOTH CLUB

Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, and much more.

In the bar, enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 18 wines by the glass, and 12 icecold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this winter include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams, chicken Senegalese, mesquite rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, fresh steelhead salmon, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, wild west lasagna, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, roasted free-range chicken, fresh steamer clams, and seared ahi salad, to name just a few.

All of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood.

An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and cold winter nights around the large central fireplace are not to be missed! One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and “The Valley’s Best Bar!”

Top to bottom: Holiday cheer; mesquite-grilled Idaho ruby red trout; cozy fireplace with selections from our award-winning wine list; the Sawtooths in winter, our namesake mountain range.

MICHEL’S CHRISTIANIA

Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as

the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s extensive wine list.
