Artistic Holidays! Thanksgiving

and the year-end celebrations start the season of friendship renewals, gift giving, and an overall time to enjoy the season with parties and gala functions. Taylor is working on small collages, small framed items, and original paintings in a variety of sizes which are great stocking stuffers, party favors, or hostess gifts. Love is a recurring theme as she incorporates poetry and heartfelt sentiments into her work. She is also working on a series of collages with a special piece of Delaware history included within the works. All items offered this season are being created almost daily. That is one of the unique features of shopping at Parke Green Galleries which makes it so exciting as something new is always arriving daily because it goes right on the shelves or walls as soon as it is completed. Another great thing about stopping by is you can ask questions and learn

about the creative process and what other works are planned. You can ask what an item costs without a frame if you don’t like the frame it is in. If there is an un-framed piece, you can see what frames it may fit in and it could possibly be changed out. There are flexible terms on larger pieces or commission work if you are planning to buy an investment collector piece for yourself or a legacy piece for a child or grandchild. A great thing in buying directly from the artist is the interaction that develops and the confidence you gather in knowing that your purchase is authentic. While no one can guarantee what pieces will appreciate, you have assurance that the work is a product made here in Delaware by an artist who has developed a strong national following. It’s not every day you get to meet artists in their work environs. It’s sort of scary in some instances as the creative chaos is nerve wracking to those who work in a more orderly,

mainstream fashion. Be sure to stop by and see Jan in her new studio space and come observe guest artists Linda Chatfield and Maria Liberto Bessette who will be working on projects thought this joyous season. Taylor, as usual, won the messiest award so please try to avoid the paint and glue. Peace and glad tidings from all at Parke Green Galleries. Cheers.

Window on the Green Tom Smith

Looking out my window I see signs of late Fall;

magnificent trees with bare branches reaching for the cloudy sky, swirling leaves now brown, their bright colors faded and winds from the North. As I look out on this scene my thoughts turn to Bridgeville, my hometown.

Not So Long Ago

There were no big box stores

then, it was a term that had not yet been invented. We had a little downtown in Bridgeville and you could all of your Christmas shopping without ever leaving town. We were not a rich town but we had our own special town decorations. Rows of lights were strung over Market Street from Main Street to the railroad tracks; red, green, blue, and yellow. It was not fancy, but it was ours. We also had a Santa Claus who appeared on Friday and Saturday nights when the stores were open until 9 p.m. There once was a story circulating around town that Santa Claus had arrived one evening and appeared to be intoxicated and had “run a man up a tree” on Market Street in front of

surprised families and children. But the whole story is long and complicated, if true at all. When I was a teenager and able to earn some money I managed to always save some for Christmas presents. Shopping in Bridgeville was easy. I would go to J.P. Scott’s Store for Men and get a shirt for my father and one for my uncle as well. Jim Scott or his wife would select something that was just right, affordable, and wrap it up for me. Then I would go next door to the Nancy Lee Shop. Rachel Rudelmier worked there and she was a good friend of my mother. On file they had sizes for Mother and my sister and she would always remember what I got last year. Down Market Street I walked past

Scotts Furniture Store and in their large window was my Uncle Eddie playing Christmas music on his Hammond organ. I would stop and listen for a while, not just because he was my uncle, but because he was such a good musician. Next was a quick stop at James 5 & 10 and a visit with Dorothy Ryan and perhaps buy some Brach’s candy from their candy counter. In a couple of years I would be working at the 5 & 10 during Christmas, but that is a whole other story. Christmas week would not be complete with a drive around town to look at decorated houses. Up and down almost every street in town we would go. Sometimes there would be a house totally in red, or green, or blue, my favorite. That was a treat for my sister and I and it is something I still like to do. Is it entertainment or nostalgia that I still do that? I think nostalgia, because it just feels so good. Yes, it is nostalgia for a much simpler time. It was indeed safer, less complicated, and I suspect a happier time in many ways... in Bridgeville, NOT SO LONG AGO.
