President’s Letter On behalf of the Board and membership of Delaware

We need you to join our organization, so ask for an application at our tent or find one on our web site. Membership entitles you to discounted prices at Delaware Friends of Folk events—we sponsor monthly coffee houses and special concerts. In addition, we hold an end of the year party in December and a pick-in most months. It’s a great organization with friendly, sociable members and we’d love for you to be a part of it.

Friends of Folk, welcome to the 24th annual Delmarva Folk Festival! Thanks to Pete Seeger’s pioneering efforts at putting on what is now called a Folk Festival over 50 years ago (Newport started in 1959), we are all here today, and we’re glad you came. We hope you enjoy our Festival as much as we enjoy presenting it. Again this year we have tried to live up to our “Support Local Music” slogan so all but one of our acts lives within 50 miles of Hartly. The line-up for Friday and Saturday represents a broad cross-section of the American folk music scene including blues, bluegrass, old-time, traditional and contemporary folk, and a few things that don’t fit anywhere except here. We plan this Festival to provide a rich musical tapestry so you can encounter music that you normally won’t find on commercial radio or at other local music venues. We are especially pleased to be welcoming Sankofa African Drums and Dance back to our stage.

And be sure to browse through the ads in this program. These are all local sponsors who have excellent goods and services to offer and who support this Festival with their advertising dollars. Because of their generosity, we are able to bring you quality music without blasting you with “corporate” icons. We also appreciate the special support of the Delaware Division of the Arts and Mispillion River Brewing. Finally, a very special thanks to Storm Longhauser for his wonderful job organizing the festival. He has managed a diverse group of people (see “herding cats”) to make this all happen. He and a few others have been preparing this Festival site for 2 months. They are a group of dedicated volunteers who Zeke Zeller has fittingly dubbed “Webbusters”. Without these folks’ work, you’d be sitting on greenbrier and stumbling over branches (especially after sundown). You wouldn’t have known where to park, the paint would still be in the can, you couldn’t buy anything from vendors, and you couldn’t hear the music. These fine folks are our volunteers, and this Festival happens because of their work and dedication. If you’d like to help out next year, see anyone with a staff badge and we’ll sign you up. It’s yet another way to enjoy this Festival.

We concentrate on making this festival friendly and congenial; laid-back if you like that term. Here in the shade of these great old trees on Lonnie & Sonja Field’s farm, you can enjoy an uncluttered, peaceful day (and night) of wonderful music. In addition, you’ll find yourself surrounded by friends, some you’ve known for quite a while, and maybe others you just met. Please make yourself comfortable, enjoy our festival, and do your part to make sure others can do the same. Obviously you are outside, and so are mosquitoes, bees, ticks, spiders, and poison ivy. We’ve done our best to clear the main Festival area, but if you decide to wander off the beaten path, please be alert, careful, and considerate of your environment. Take only pictures and leave only footprints. And parents–please keep track of your children. We love them all and don’t want any of them to get lost or hurt in any way, and we have lots for them to do in their own corner of the field.

Warm Regards, John Kidd, Board Chair Delaware Friends of Folk

You’re probably here for the music, but there’s more than music at our Festival. We have a number of food and craft vendors out in the field, so take some time to browse about and help support these fine folks. Andy Fox will offer a free guitar workshop at 4 pm Saturday near the southeast corner of the big field. Friends of Folk have a tent facing the stage, so pay us a visit too. While you’re there, be sure to pick up a shirt and get a few CDs. Many of our artists are selling their CDs today and this is one of the best ways to support these folks, some of whom try to make a living at this folk music business. For the youngsters among us we have games, paints, an authentic piper—Waylon Sprowl at 4 pm, and other neat activities.

Folk

Hero

Finals

We’ve been doing this since 2007! You can compete, yourself, in 2016!

Friday 7:20 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mike Liddicoat Mike Liddicoat is a folk artist from Dover Delaware. He plays

acoustic versions of rock and roll-covers, along with original (and often funny) songs. He accompanies himself with an acoustic guitar and a Woody-Allen style of humor. Mike is known for his countertenor vocal style, reminiscent of Alan Wilson from the hippie band Canned Heat. His musical influences are myriad and diverse, ranging from Warren Zevon to the Band. This wide array of influences help explain the uniqueness and strong individuality of his music. Mike is a faithful supporter of the Delaware Friends of Folk. He regularly shares his talents at Friends of Folk “Pick-Ins” and open-mics, and has competed several times in the Folk Hero Contest.

Friday 7:40 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Fried Okra While only a duo for two years Fried Okra brings almost a century

of performing acoustic music to the stage. Mike Quinn and Rick Hudson are both native sons of the South; both have spent their lives performing and collecting folk songs. They met at the Delaware Friends of Folk Pick-Ins and decided to do some collaborating. The music of Fried Okra is a fusion of old-time, country, bluegrass, blues, spiritual, and folk. Fried Okra performs every third Thursday of the month at the La Tolteca Mexican Restaurant in North Dover.

Friday 8:00 . . . . . . . . . . Danny Whitecotton Danny Whitecotton is an Americana singer-songwriter out of

Wilmington, Delaware. Preforming mostly solo acoustic and sometimes with a band, he delivers heartfelt songs about life, love 4

and wandering with a trademark laid back, folky, bluesy, country kind of vibe. Born and raised in Texas, he left a job in the corporate world to pursue music because he never felt like anything else truly fit. Writing and singing quickly became his therapy, and the road began to call. Touring took him across the United States from Maine to Texas and back again, finally landing him in upstate New York, where he stayed for several years before moving to Delaware. His first full-length album was released in 2012, titled Go On and Rain. His sophomore release, Love, War and Other Mistakes was released in 2013 to international acclaim, and 2015 calls its promise as the unceasing road demands more. Danny has performed on iconic stages all over the USA, and was a finalist at the long-running Delmarva Folk Festival in 2015, firmly cementing his place in the local Delaware music scene. Citing influences from artists as diverse as Willie Nelson, the Eagles and Buddy Guy, Dannyʼs style has admittedly evolved through discovering the music of Ryan Adams, leading him to find creative affinity with Jason Isbell, Bright Eyes, Ryan Bingham, Wilco and Townes Van Zandt. His songs have been described as ʻsad and sorrowfulʼ with a hint of lingering hope, which is exactly what he is trying to get across, stating that if someone else can feel as good as he does after getting the words off his chest, then thatʼll make him happy. Not too happy, mind you – heʼs been trading off sorrowful licks long enough for it to become a trademark, so there likely wonʼt be a lot of walking on sunshine in his foreseeable future. Keep up with Danny Whitecotton through his blog, or one of his many social networks. To be the first to know about new music, and to join the ranks of supporters, visit his Patreon site to be placed at the front of the queue.

Friday 8:20 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Hanna Paige Hanna Paige is an Indie singer/songwriter from Newark, DE. She

got her first guitar for Christmas 2012, when she was 13 years old, and taught herself how to play. She started singing shortly thereafter and had her first on stage performance in October 2013. In her short career, Hanna has several live performances and original songs to her credit. Her music has been featured on Live Radio. Gable Music Ventures predicts that Hannaʼs name will be “in the music scene for many years to come.” Her new EP, “Letʼs Run Away,” is now available for download on her website http://hannapaige.com/. 5

Friday 8:40 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Single Origin

Single Origin is an indie-folk-blues duo comprised of twin brothers Sean and Shannen Norris. Their sound exudes the class and sophistication of the caffeinated brew which is (in part) their namesake. Sean and Shannen Norris create a moody and sensuous atmosphere, transporting listeners to a realm of soulful transcendence. Their rich, smooth sounds consists of a bewitching strumming, beating, and bending of guitar chords paired with the intoxicating lilt of their vocal stylings. Single Origin has the rare quality of being urbane and yet entirely unpretentious. With influences as experimental as Bjork and Radiohead, they also draw inspiration from such crowd pleasers as Coldplay and The Black Keys. They maintain a busy performance schedule and are very popular in Dover, with recent appearances at Doc MacGrogenʼs, the Touchdown Lounge, and 33 West. While maintaining a distinctive voice, Single Origin truly has something for audiences of all walks of life.

Friday 9:00 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Todd Chappelle Todd Chappelle is a local comedy songwriter who does a mix of funny original songs and parodies. His music is influenced by such artists as Weird Al Yankovic, Tom Lehrer and Mark Russell. Toddʼs music has been heard on The Dr. Demento Show, CNN Radio, the BBC and Good Day Philadelphia, along with radio stations in PA, DE and NJ. He appeared in the 2015 PBS special “Dela-Where?”, and his song parody “Iʼm From Delaware” was used as the theme song for that program. Look for him to appear in the sequel to “Dela-Where?” sometime at the end of 2015. With a quick wit and a powerful voice, Todd is a dynamic live act who has performed his humorous music at the New York Funny Songs Festival, the Philadelphia Funny Songs Festival, the Chicago Comedy Rock Festival, and local venues such as World Cafe Live at the Queen, the Baby Grand in Wilmington, the Milton Theater and the Smyrna Opera House. Visit him at www.toddchappelle.com. 6

Saturday 1:00. . . . Me & My Friend Phyllis Me and My Friend Phyllis consists Phyllis and Michele have performed

of two great friends: Michele Green and Phyllis Dodd. Both have a long history as standard bearers of bluegrass music. Their music style incorporates songs and styles from string-band, gospel, country, and blues repertoires. They deliver a harddriving, powerful sound, featuring traditional bluegrass instruments and crystal-clear harmonies.

professionally with many regional bluegrass, folk, and country bands, including Free Range and Blue Crab Crossing. Along the way, they won audiences with their boundless energy and spirit. As confirmed “Jamaholics,” they also enjoy picking with friends into the wee hours of the night.

Saturday 2:00. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Shane Palko Shane

Palko is an alternative folk musician from Kemblesville, Pennsylvania, who currently uses Delaware as his home-base, from which to travel and record his music. His lyrics are largely inspired by traveling—which he does often. He has toured in the US, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Burma, Canada, South Africa, Swaziland, Ireland, Germany, France, Austria.

called introspective and reflective, light-hearted and thought-provoking, with underlying themes of social critique and the call of the open road.

Shane began writing songs when he was 6 years old, and has recorded several albums. His music has been

Saturday 3:00. . . . . . . . . . . . . Frog Protection Frog Protection is a loose allows in poisons, insecticides, and affiliation of long-time musical friends assembled to entertain and inform. Lonnie Field (guitar, vocals) and John Kidd (harmonicas, percussion, vocals) front the group, with Bob Hamel on bass and Jan Crumpley adding vocals, flute, whistle, and accordion. We may have a few guests sit in too. For the 24th Delmarva Folk Festival, weʼve picked songs from some of our favorite songwriters: John Prine, Warren Zevon, JJ Cale, Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia, Paul Simon, Greg Shrader, Mark Knopfler, and a few you may not know, but should. Weʼve got a brand new original too—“Frog Protection Blues” will make its world premiere today.

other nasties (not so good).

This past spring, Lonnie noticed a lot of frogs here on his property. Not just in the several ponds, but in his garden, in the wide open field, and even in the woods. Thatʼs good news, since it tells us that at least these 35 acres are in pretty good shape. Organic gardening can be tough, but there are some unexpected benefits. There are 18 different species of frogs in Delaware and they each have a distinctive call (or croak). The Delaware Amphibian Monitoring Program (get it?—DAMP) is part of a national effort to follow frog populations over a number of years in order to find variations that may indicate environmental changes.

Which brings us to the “inform” part of what we do. The “Frog Protection” name is derived from the recent oddly humorous credit card commercial, but there is a really serious side to the idea. Frogs (actually most amphibians) are used as “indicator” organisms— essentially they are the canaries in the coalmine that we call Earth. They are very sensitive to changes in their environment. Their presence indicates a reasonably healthy pond, marsh or stream, and their absence (or disappearance) usually means something is wrong. It works this way because amphibians live in two different places—water and land. They also have thin skin that allows oxygen in (good), but also

Want to help? Delaware needs volunteers to participate in this monitoring program, especially in Kent and Sussex Counties. They offer a free training CD that teaches you the calls of all 18 frog species. Once you pass the on-line test, you are assigned an area and times to survey and then enter your findings into an online database. They ask for a 3 year commitment to visit local assigned roadways 3 nights between February and July. Just go to the DNREC web site and search on “DAMP”. Youʼll be glad you did—and so will the frogs.
