Dear Readers, Every year that goes by brings new plans, new destinations and a fresh perspective on life’s challenges. For my part, I begin the new year in the desert. I set up camp in Dakhla, Morocco to take a short break between two stages of the Africa Eco Race – an exciting rally that Sunreef Yachts proudly partners. I enjoy a bit of silence on the shores of the Atlantic. I couldn’t think of a fresher perspective and a better place to reflect on the year that has passed. Last year was certainly a year of landmark projects for Sunreef Yachts. First of all, the 80 Sunreef Power debuted in Cannes. The positive feedback we received exceeded our expectations. The yacht’s Monaco showcase confirmed that the superyacht clientele regards big catamarans as an attractive alternative for monohulls. Up till now, when thinking of a superyacht, most people would usually picture a monohull. This point of view is about to change. Over the fall season we were entrusted to build the world’s biggest luxury multihull motor yacht, the 49 M Sunreef Power. I am confident that this project will shape a new perception of luxury crafts. One of the industry’s most inspiring trends is the search for more sustainability. Last year we launched our first fully-electric Sunreef 50 sail catamaran, followed by an exclusive electric Sunreef 60. Our R&D department’s main focus at the moment is to provide a responsible cruising experience to all our customers and expand our EcoElectric line of luxury crafts. Our main objective for 2020 is to seize on the momentum that has formed around Sunreef Yachts and to keep growing. We will introduce new models and aim to strengthen our position in the superyacht world. This will require effort and perseverance, but with your continuous support, we face our challenges with confidence. I want to thank you for being with us and wish you a wonderful year ahead.

Yours sincerely,

Francis Lapp President and Founder of the Sunreef Yachts Shipyard

IN POLE POSITION A LOOK AT INDUSTRY TRENDS WITH FRANCIS LAPP

Over 20 years of involvement with the yachting world I have observed many trends in the field of yacht design. Today, we are witnessing one of the most interesting evolutions of the industry: an increasing demand for voluminous catamarans. A part of the monohull superyacht market gradually shifts towards multihulls.

expectations

An interview with Rocco Sisto, Captain of the Sunreef 80 Above

We meet captain Rocco Sisto in Cannes on a busy day du r i ng t h e Ca n n e s Yachting Festival. The helmsman of the Sunreef 80 ABOVE tells us about his personal experience with Sunreef Yachts catamarans from a seasoned sailor’s perspective.

I was convinced the yacht’s overall design was mainly aiming at comfort. Everything I saw inside and outside suggested extreme comfort but I wasn’t sure about the performance. It was a very pleasant surprise when we finally got on board for tests. We enjoyed some really good performance under sail. The time I spent working on BLUE DEER made me realize keeping balance between luxury and good sailing is an art that Sunreef is very good at.

How long have you been sailing? I started out as a windsurfer over 30 years ago. From there, I went to racing on small fast boats like Hobie Cat, Flying Dutchman, Tornado, F18… I became captain in 2002, managing my time between working on luxury yachts and taking part in regattas on a maxi yacht and ORC class.

From helming a Sunreef 74 you switched to an even bigger cat, a Sunreef 80. Tell us about this transition. What were the first differences you noticed? The Sunreef 80 is a totally new model, in a totally new range, so the differences are easily spotted. The shape of the 80 is

Your adventure with Sunreef Yachts started with a Sunreef 74 a couple of years ago… What were your first impressions of the yacht? It was the Sunreef 74 BLUE DEER, a luxury yacht intended

more aggressive and the boat’s presence is quite imposing with the increased height and new bulwark design. The 74 was already extremely comfortable, but I have to say the 80 is a whole different story. The spaces you find on board are just incredible and hard to compare with any other yacht in this length range.

for high-end charters. I remember that when I first saw it,

Spring / Summer

155

What sails have you put on the Sunreef 80 Above? To me, the choice of sails is crucial. They are just as important as engines are for a car. I wanted ABOVE to perform, so I used special “engines”, with a 240m² square top main sail and huge gennaker of around 400m². All of this gives you nice sailing experience even in light winds. With 8 to 9 knots of wind you can reach 8 to 9 knots of speed which is impressive.

What about Atlantic crossings? I’ve done 20 crossings in my life, including 4 on board a Sunreef Yachts catamaran. Personally, the ocean is where I get the most fun sailing Sunreefs.

What makes Above stand out as a charter yacht? I think the question is not what makes ABOVE stand out in the charter world, the point is that there is no other valid competitor. It’s clear that there are lots of other catamarans out there, but none of them can compete with Sunreef Yachts. There’s something about the way they make you feel safe and stable without any compromise on luxury or good sailing. On top of that, the Owner of Above came up with a really nice layout for charters. The aft cockpit is amazing and we have Jacuzzi on the flybridge too. I have seen quite a few Sunreef Yachts catamarans and it’s always a pleasure to see how different they are from one another. It is hard to compare with any other catamaran brand – they are simply another level.

A tour of the Pontine Islands 160

Sunreef News Magazine #13

Relatively remote, quiet and laidback, the Pontine archipelago is a cluster of seven islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast between Rome and Naples. Stunning natural scenery, an authentic Italian atmosphere, cosy beach bars and great seafood, it is an oasis for visitors seeking peace and relaxation.

The journey starts in a picturesque coastal town of Gaeta, known as a land of legends

Gaeta

and history with origins going back to the Ancient Greek and Roman Empires reflected by the remains of gorgeous Roman villas, gardens and two castles that were guarding the town.

Ventotene

After a day and night spent in Gaeta, the luxury yacht takes guests to a small island of Ventotene. This picturesque islet used to serve as a place of confinement but is now known as one of the greatest scuba diving spots in Italy.

Zannone is the next island along the way that features stunning natural beauty

Zannone

and keeps dark secrets of Italian aristocracy who built a spectacular villa on the grounds of a medieval monastery. Thus from being a place of meditation, silence and prayer, the isle turned into a secret vacation retreat with masked parties, intrigues and scandals. It all ended in summer 1970 with the last owner of the infamous villa Marquis Camillo Casati’s tragic act of jealousy. The isle was then reclaimed by the state and is now home to hundreds of mouflon wild sheep which had been brought here for hunting and announced protected species afterwards.

Spring / Summer

Leaving Zannone behind, guests will enjoy a stunning sail to Ponza, a beautiful

Ponza

island shaped like a crescent moon. Almost unknown to tourists, this magical place astonishes with sandy beaches, white granite rocks, orange-purple sea grottos and pirates caves where scuba divers still search for hidden treasures. Stepping off the luxury yacht, guests can taste iconic Italian dishes and regional specialties in one of local restaurants.

162

Sunreef News Magazine #13

Having visited Ponza, the guests will head to a secret islet of Palmarola. This tiny

Palmarola

uninhabited island is a realm of myths and legends. This is where a Greek hero Odysseus was seduced by the sirens’ songs on his way back home from burning Troy and had to plug his ears and tie himself to ship’s mast to resist falling into the alluring waters. On Palmarola, there is an incredible cathedral made of rocks jutting out from the sea to the sky, like gothic spires. A majestic building hides mysterious grottos in the shadow of stone arches, which can be visited by boat or explored during a swim. The colours of the cliffs are mesmerising, like from a painter’s palette. The water is crystal clear and still, the rock walls are smooth and shiny, covered in blue-orange corals and sea anemones.

From Palmarola guests sail back to Gaeta, where the sailing adventure ends. There is

WHY PUT YOUR SUNREEF CATAMARAN INTO CHARTER? Interview with Aleksandra Chabros, Charter Manager at Sunreef Yachts Charter

In the midst of a busy Antigua Charter Yacht Show we meet up with Charter Manager Aleksandra Chabros. on the intensity of the commercial activity of the boat. The owners can decide how many weeks they want to use their yacht and how many weeks are available for customers.
