Sunreef News Magazine #17

Dear Readers, Let me take you back to a milestone moment at Sunreef Yachts. A busy January afternoon begins in Gdansk, Poland as the team prepares for the launch of the all-electric Sunreef 80 Eco. Despite the snow and the cold, the operation runs smoothly and we soon see the hull hit the waters of the Martwa Wisła river. This is the starting point of a new journey. One that will shape the future of responsible yachting. We cruise into the new year on board an ultramodern solar craft with pioneering green tech. We are ready for another year of innovation and enter it with loads of green energy, that we want to share with all the Sunreef family across the globe. We look back at a dynamic and busy 2021. Our efforts in the domain of sustainability have been rewarded by an increased demand for the Eco range and international industry awards including the Green Yacht Trophy in Cannes, the Boat Builder Award in Amsterdam and the German Design Award. Pushing innovation forward requires dynamic synergies and meaningful partnerships. As partners of the Rosberg X Racing team, we were very proud to see them triumphing in the Extreme E. Being part of this wonderful initiative and being able to support the team’s sustainability action has been an honor. The Sunreef Yachts Eco range also certainly gathered great momentum when two-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso commissioned a custom 60 Sunreef Power Eco catamaran. Welcoming another outstanding sports personality into our family of ambassadors helps us move forward with even more confidence. With the 70 Sunreef Power recognized as Best Motor Catamaran at the World Yachts Trophies and the 100 Sunreef Power launched, I can proudly say our motoryacht range is enjoying a wave of success. At the same time, our fleet of sail catamarans gains a spectacular addition with the new Sunreef 43M Eco. All of this is generating plenty of optimism and positive energy. I truly hope and believe we all have a productive year ahead. I want to wish you all the best of health and many opportunities to go out into the sea and celebrate the lifestyle we all love.

Yours sincerely,

Francis Lapp President and Founder of the Sunreef Yachts Shipyard

What is your vision of a perfect day at sea? My perfect day at sea would not start too early. It would be a day off, starting with breakfast on board with friends and family. This would be followed by swimming and some water sports. After lunch, we would all relax, talk and enjoy the sun. Dinner would be a barbecue that we would prepare and cook ourselves and enjoy together.

Why did you choose to build an electric yacht? The world is moving in this direction. We are more aware and want more sustainability. We have seen important changes over the last years in global mobility, and to me it makes perfect sense to go for an electric catamaran. This type of vessel gives you a closer bond with the seas. The world is going electric and yachts should also follow.

Why did you choose to build your yacht with Sunreef Yachts? It was a very easy choice. Sunreef Yachts is known for high quality and has earned a great reputation over the last two decades. I really wanted to build a catamaran, because I wanted to enjoy more space and all the other advantages that multihulls bring. At the same time, my vision was to build a luxury craft of the highest quality. Sunreef Yachts matched all my requirements in terms of space, catamaran expertise, lifestyle and luxury. It was a no-brainer for me. 28

Sunreef News Magazine #17

Name 3 must-have accessories on your future yacht The first would be a barbecue, which is a must for me. I really enjoy long evening barbecue parties with friends and family, so this is essential to me. I would also like to have a good sound system as music will be an important part of the lifestyle on board. Lastly, I will certainly have some water toys on board so that we can enjoy both relaxation on the sunpads and sports.

Where will you take your yacht? I will be probably based in Monaco, where I live. I will cruise in the French Riviera, Corsica and Sardinia. Generally speaking, the south of France and Mediterranean will be my cruising area.

What do you expect from a yacht as an owner? This will be my first yacht, so I don’t have anything specific in mind. I want the yacht to always be ready to go. Sometimes I will go out into the sea spontaneously, so I want to make sure the yacht is reliable. I want a yacht that I can trust. I know the technology on this electric yacht is complex but I can also see the amount of effort Sunreef Yachts is putting into this, so I feel very confident. I am looking forward to spending time on board.

Climate change, species extinction and deforestation are the most pressing environmental threats today. Changing our everyday habits can contribute to a positive change and help our planet become a healthier place. The smallest gestures, if applied every day, can have the most important impact.

This is why together with Sunreef Yachts Eco brand ambassador Nico Rosberg, the company proudly joined Meat Free Monday - an inspiring initiative launched by Paul McCartney that encourages people worldwide to reduce meat consumption to help the environment and have a more sustainable lifestyle. The Meat Free Monday campaign encourages people across the globe to reduce meat consumption. One meat-free meal a week can truly make a difference. By introducing this small change to our diet, we can all help battle climate change while enjoying a healthier life. To inspire people to join the campaign, Sunreef Yachts asked one of Europe’s top chefs Tomasz Koprowski to prepare 4 plant-based culinary creations to be presented in a new video series. Members of various company departments prepared delicious meat-free dishes in each episode to promote the campaign. The video series mixing cooking and sustainability is named MARINADE: Meat Free Monday Edition. One day a week – that is all it takes to shape a greener future. INTERVIEW WITH CAPTAIN ELIOT

JOHNSTON Proud helmsman of 60 Sunreef Power OTOCTONE 60, Captain Eliot Johnston has been with the yacht from the very beginning - overseeing the construction process and her launch, taking her for her maiden voyage and operating her in the Mediterranean. In an interview for Sunreef News Magazine, he talks about his experience and walks us through the features of a perfect charter yacht.

Photography: Bartlomiej Checinski, Maciej Walczuk

Spring / Summer

167

Please tell us about yourself and your experience? Always passionate about the maritime world, I’ve been expanding my knowledge of the yachting industry for the past 12 years. I used to work in luxurious hotels and restaurants in Cannes which helped me to get into high-class service environment and understand its nuances. Since I started as a deckhand on a superyacht, it became clear to me that this passion will grow into profession. My involvement into every aspect of running a yacht evolved into the set of skills required to become a Captain.

What makes OTOCTONE 60 unique in your opinion? The yacht's large interior and exterior living spaces give a feeling of a significantly bigger boat than expected from a 60ft vessel. I had an opportunity to be actively involved in the production process of OTOCTONE 60 already in the shipyard. Having impact on the final design, materials used, decorations, as well as technical solutions available onboard that all in all create the most comfortable and welcoming atmosphere for passengers was a great experience. I am sure that the work put into the designing process is appreciated by the guests on board.

168

Sunreef News Magazine #17

What is a dream destination of yours where you would like to see OTOCTONE 60? Corsica, the Mediterranean jewel, remains the dream destination for OTOCTONE 60. The diversity of landscapes, the incredible number of small bays and coves with crystal clear waters and the old Corsican cities like Porto Vecchio or Bonifacio that deserve to be seen, make Corsica the best choice.

What makes OTOCTONE 60 a great choice for charterers? OTOCTONE 60 is a great option for many reasons: the stability and comfort of the boat while cruising or anchoring is beyond compare, there is a rich selection of water toys to choose from, including 2 seabobs, an electric foil, big donuts for kids, fishing and snorkeling gear, wakeboard, water skis (mono and duo). All of this managed by a professional and experienced crew - a Stewardess with professional hospitality background and 10 years of experience in the yachting industry, a Chef, who travelled to every part of the world, learning and mastering many cuisines as well as local flavours and, of course, myself.

Spring / Summer

169

Can you explain what the role of a Captain is when there are guests on board? Security of the passengers is on top of the list. The yacht has to be maintained in perfect condition in order to avoid any possible inconvenience that might interfere with the successful running of the charter. Moreover, Captain must be familiar with cruising area, activities ashore and high-quality local restaurants to be able to handle every request from the guests.

170

Sunreef News Magazine #17

What is the most rewarding part of your job? The most rewarding part of the job is the client’s satisfaction, in other words the successful completion of the charter. We appreciate repeat clients, who keep booking trips with us, with whom we share the passion for the sea and enjoy the hidden gems of the area.

172

Sunreef News Magazine #17

There are several levels of commercial compliance that need to be taken into consideration when operating a charter yacht. It starts with the yacht’s construction and registration, followed by selection of appropriately qualified crew and compliance with national laws and regulations for commercially operated yachts in a chosen area.

Spring / Summer

173

Once the yacht is commissioned and the plan is to operate her commercially, it is essential that the yacht is built in accordance with requirements of the chosen Flag State so that upon her launch, the yacht can be successfully registered as a commercial vessel. For instance, if you choose to register the yacht under Maltese flag, the yacht needs to comply with the Commercial Yacht Code which sets the required standards of safety, pollution prevention and crew welfare, appropriate for the type and size of the yacht. Upon satisfactory completion of the required survey and inspections, a yacht complying with the standards set out in the Code, is issued with a Certificate of Compliance to Trade as a Commercial Yacht which is a prerequisite for commercial registration. When it comes to selection of crew, in addition to their professional experience and skills, they are required to hold the necessary Flag State approved qualifications specific to their positions on board in order to be employed on a commercial yacht. Depending on the yacht’s flag and area of operation, the requirements towards crew certification may vary. The farther from safe haven you plan to operate the yacht, the more constraining the list of certificates gets.

174

Sunreef News Magazine #17

Additional constraints and requirements are caused by the fact that whenever the yacht holds a commercial status, whether or not commercial activity is conducted at a given time, she is required to comply with the requirements of the Flag State and local regulations applying to commercial vessels, including manning requirements. This means that at any point in time, whether the yacht is on a charter or is being delivered across the Atlantic with only professional seafarers on board, she needs to be equipped and the crew need to be qualified so as to carry passengers. On a case by case basis, yacht registries may issue exemptions for longer transfers, such as the Atlantic crossing, however, there is no guarantee that the exemption is granted each time.

Spring / Summer

175

Another level of commercial compliance are national laws applying to yacht’s charter activity in a chosen country. As a rule, the Mediterranean (the term used to cover the main European charter destinations, including Croatia and Greece) is the most complex region for operating commercial yachts due to application of VAT (different in each state) on yacht charter services. Each EU state has its own charter regulations, their own set of rules which need to be followed by owning companies, yacht managers and captains. Whenever a plan is made to operate in any EU country for the first time, formalities need to be taken care of well in advance. The time for VAT registration alone ranges from 2 days to several weeks depending on the country of application. Advance planning is also required for operating a commercial yacht in any non-EU country, be it in Europe, the Caribbean or more exotic destinations. Local charter regulations towards the yacht’s equipment and certification, her crew and charter itinerary must be taken into consideration when planning a booking calendar as well as owners’ use. 176

With all of the above in mind, it comes with no surprise that commercial compliance issues are best managed by a yacht manager experienced in operating commercial yachts in various destinations. It is the yacht manager’s responsibility to make sure that the yacht’s commercial status is obtained and properly maintained with no disruption for the owner’s use or charter calendar. Assistance provided by a yacht management company in scope of commercial compliance services also includes crew training on relevant VAT related matters and charter documentation, advice on and verification of records required to comply with commercial exemption rules in a given state, consulting local VAT agents on charter related matters, coordinating VAT calculation and payments to local tax offices. With a fleet of commercial yachts under management in the most popular charter destinations, Sunreef Yachts Charter team can be relied on for any commercial compliance aspects at any stage of the yacht’s commercial operation.
