When it comes to educational superpowers, minds often wander to Asian countries like Singapore, South Korea or the Nordic countries like Finland and Norway. This is because the students from these countries have outperformed all others academically for the longest time.

How Canada Has Come To Be an

Education Superpower

A

s time has passed we as the global community have come to observe a new trend, that is Canada receiving an educational superpower status after what it has successfully achieved with its school student population.

New tests show Canada’s teens better educated than the rest

International Pisa tests of the recent years have come to reflect a new trend: the teenagers of Canada are among the best educated in the world as per tests conducted by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Ritika Tiwari

Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

Canadians teens are stiff competition to peers in countries that have a reputation for being the best at subjects like science, maths, and reading. This is also reflected in the highest average percentage of working adults having high education qualification - a whopping 55% while other well-to-do countries in this regard are only at an average of 35% as evaluated by OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development).

Migrant students improving Canada’s status

Individual provinces within Canada have different policies, but across the deck have to have equal opportunities ensured for all students. Regardless of what is the status of migration and origin of students, state sponsored education is the reason be-

State shouldered efforts

hind this equity.

The provinces of Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia have the qualifications to leave behind big time leaders in science, namely Singapore and Japan, at the high school level. The education director of OECD, Andreas Schleicher observes that this has to do with the equity offered by Canada to its opportunity seekers. The largest number of students in Canadian schools are from families of migrants where both parents are from outside Canada. The migrants coming into Canada itself are relatively well educated and skilled. This results in a cultural focus from these families on the education of their children as they encourage them to grow further and partake in higher education to hone their skills furthermore than the parents did.

The state in Canada has stood for values like equality of opportunity and had laid a strong stress on literacy. This is reflected in Canada’s teachers being some of the most well paid in the world - an observation that sends its competitors running as they just cannot catch up. The schools are well staffed and libraries are well funded. It is safe to say that the low socioeconomic gap within Canada also helps with the cause of education. While France stands at a socio-economic gap ranging at about 20% and Singapore stands at 17%, Canada has a very low socio economic gap rate at just 9%. The consistency that the state is able to maintain across the board is the reason that Canada has successfully outdone other countries in terms of education, and is now looking at the status of an educational superpower.

This family - state balance is the optimum learning environment for students who get encouragement from home and opportunity from school. As is evident, the result is a very well educated well to do population of students that is doing Canada proud. The stress on fairequal access is so Pisa tests prove Canone of the few counmigrant children are at equal footing migrant children.

Being a harbinger of change

Message from the Founder:

As a high school student, I have noticed that the classroom setting is not always the safest place to share ideas and express ourselves as women. Even though it is the 21st century, women still struggle everyday to make their voices heard, to have rights and to be accepted not just as a woman but as a human being. I found myself asking the question, why are we not fostering a safe and inclusive environment where girls (and guys) can come together, and have inclusive discussions bringing awareness to women’s issues within our high school communities. This inspired me to start Girls Can Talk Society!

G

problems they face, but also with their daily lives in general. It aims to be a platform through which students can discuss freely about issues pertinent in their communities.

While Girls Can Talk Society may have been founded only recently, the organization has shaped and improved communities in several ways. Whether it be a bottle drive, a canned food collection, or a popcorn sale, the society is committed to raising funds and making donations to help improve the lives of women all throughout the province! Through small acts

irls Can Talk Society is a student-led non-profit organization that strives to foster a supportive and inclusive environment in high schools across British Columbia where students can come together and speak without stigma on issues that are relatable to women. It is a platform through which they hope to spread the ideas of inclusivity and discussion in areas where female issues may be looked down upon.

and determination, they hope to create big changes in the lives of many. As Girls Can Talk Society aims to operate amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, they continue to create opportunities for students to get involved. Not only do they welcome everyone, regardless of gender (not only women), race, sexual orientation, or socio-economic backgrounds to partake in the activities, but they also ensure that the work they do is going back into improving our communities. Some of their plans for the 2020- 2021 school year include : distributing self care packages to single mothers, hosting online webinars, and continuing our school clubs. However, they cannot do this alone – sponsors provide a crucial support and reinforcement for everything Girls Can Talk Society does. With a team of inspiring individuals, they are determined to change society, raise awareness and inspire the next generation of women to empower themselves and others. Be a part of their journey and help them bring out a change that is much needed.

How to Avoid Relationship Issues after having a Baby Ritika Tiwari

Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

B

ecoming a parent is an intense experience that changes the lives of all those who go through it. However, the charm of your exciting and loving relationship may begin to fade in the early days of caring for your infant. In a time like this, a couple that once was always excited and engaging in endless activities will have more responsibilities than ever before and not enough time to meet even half of them. In such a case, how should you avoid relationship issues after welcoming your baby?

1- Sympathize with the partner

Becoming a parent means to go through a profound identity shift for life. This is a stressful time for everyone, just like it was when you were teenagers. Such a time requires patience and kindness. It is important, then, to remember that both of you are going through the same experience but in different ways. You are the ones who understand each other the most in this time which is why your kindness to one another

10

SEPTEMBER 2020

means the most.

2- Take out time to spend with each other

Life is always busy, yet it is busier than it has ever been after you have a baby. Couples simply do not get the time to bond with each other anymore because a significant chunk of their time is spent in devotion to the new member of the family. This can alienate couples who were once well acquainted with each other’s daily routine and patterns. Hence, it is crucial to feel like you still know the other person and both of you evolve into your new personalities together.

3- Find healthy ways to communicate through your issues

Resentment can collect for a long time and there may be no seeming way of communicating effectively with one another. One person might feel overworked while the other person may feel left out. At a time like this, however hard it may seem, couples need to express their feelings to each other. This may be by writing each other a letter or simply going out on a proper date to discuss what each person is going through.

4- Engage in simple behaviours before the baby comes Before your bundle of joy arrived, you

probably had certain activities planned that would be time you would relax, unwind, and bond as a couple. For some couples this may be watching Netflix through the night, for others it may be gardening. Regardless of what it may be, it is important to engage in these activities in order to allow yourself to rebond with your partner over things you are both passionate about.

5- Practice parenting on each other to be better parents in the future

Parenting by no means is an easy task. And to be able to do it well with your child as they start to grow older, it is crucial to start practicing the habits of kindness, forgiveness, better listening, more compassion, and others. The best place to start is with your partner because it allows you to be better parents as well as better people, especially to the person who matters the most.

Conclusion

No turn in life comes smooth, most require hard work and perseverance. When it comes to a person you have shared your deepest darkest fears with and come so far as to have a baby, it is worth everything to push through the tough times and bring back the intimacy and affection that signifies your relationship.

CELEBRATE LIFE INSURANCE AWARENESS MONTH – PROTECT YOUR MORTGAGE WITH INSURANCE marketplace investigations.

Discounts for healthy people

Mortgage insurance through us grants healthy people lots of discount on the premium. You can use this saved money for any purpose, including fast payment of mortgage but financial institution does not offer this advantage; there is no waiver/discount for people in good health. The premium amount is the ‘standard amount’ for everybody- in good health or ill health.

Sandeep Ahuja

T

he month of September is celebrated as “National Life Insurance Awareness Month’. It awakens us to the need of having adequate insurance coverage for the financial stability of our family. Purchasing a home is an important decision and most of the times, may involve mortgage to ease your financial burden. Whenever you purchase a home with the help of mortgage, it is always advisable to secure your valuable property in times of any unforeseeable circumstance such as an illness or death so that you or your loved ones are not forced to part with your dream home or, at least are in a secure position to pay off the debts and other financial obligations. To safeguard themselves and their loved ones from undue financial burden and distress, most people opt for mortgage insurance. But while planning for mortgage protection, it is vital to choose the right institution which ‘actually provides’ financial protection as well as client friendly features; providing better value for invested money as well as safety of financial assets. Since banks are widely accepted reliable financial institutions which people extensively use for their financial needs, while procuring mortgage from these financial institutions, people feel inclined to buy mortgage insurance offered by them. Little do they realise that the very trusted financial institutions may not be the best source of every kind of financial need. It is imperative for the client to be aware of the pros and cons of insurance plans offered by different institutions so that he/loved ones may make the wise decision to get maximum benefit in times of need without falling into any financial trap. Besides banks/financial institutions, the other major institutions which offer mortgage insurance are - life insurance companies. As an insurance advisor having years of experience in this field, I would always advise my clients to buy mortgage insurance from life insurance companies if they want peace of mind in future. The reason is not simply because I am

working in this field; but is rather based upon considerable evidence which explicitly shows that insuring mortgage through us is in every way much more beneficial than insuring through other financial institutions. Following comparison between the features of these institutions will help you identify as to which of these institutions caters better to your needs:

Who is the owner?

which makes purchase of mortgage insurance through Life Insurance Company more desirable and secure is- the clarity of terms of insurance. Underwriting is done at the initial stage, and once approval is given, the protection is irrevocable, the only underlying condition being- payment of premiums. You don’t need to re-qualify at a later stage. But the disadvantage with the bank/financial institution is that underwriting is not done at the initial stage. They do post-claim underwriting, and there are chances that you may be denied the claim. Does it make any sense?? - Certainly not. But yes, this is true! It makes you vulnerable during times of need. And this fact is based upon real

The insurance company guarantees the same amount of premium throughout the period of insurance. But for policy bought through bank/ financial institution, there is no guarantee of the amount of premium. It can increase depending upon the claims experience of the insurance provider of the lending institution.

The mortgage insurance policy done through us (insurance companies) is ‘owned by the insured’ (you). It can only be cancelled by you-either by giving in writing or by non-payment of premiums. But in case of banks/ financial institutions, the policy is a group policy and you have no control over it. Strange though, but yes; you are not the owner.

Who is the beneficiary?

In case of mortgage insurance through financial institution, the lending institution is the beneficiary instead of your spouse or family member; while in case of insurance company, your spouse or family member is the beneficiary. Thus, insurance company allows the spouse/family member exercises control over the use of financial help. If the spouse/family member can pay off the rest of the instalments, she/he can use this financial help as per her/his need. Otherwise, he can use that whole amount or a portion to pay off the mortgage. But in case of financial institution, the money gets directly paid to the lender to pay off the debt; the spouse/family member has no control over this money and in case of absence of any additional income, may be left with no choice but to sell the home.

How wheatgrass can help you manage monsoon illnesses For many of us, monsoon is probably the most-awaited season of the year. Sure enough, the first drops of rains are rejuvenating, and provide us the muchsought relief from scorching summer heat. However, the onset of monsoon also means that your risk of catching a number of seasonal infections or diseases has increased considerably.

A

s “prevention is always better than cure”, having a robust immunity can help us stay protected against many monsoon-related infections and/or maladies. When it comes to the right diet for ‘Immunity Building’ or ‘strengthening our body’s internal defense mechanism’ over the long term, one of the less-talked-about yet highly effective immunity builders is wheatgrass (popularly known as gehu ki ghaas). Wheatgrass can be actively used as an everyday health tonic to prevent diseases, says Gurpreet Singh, Managing Director, Jivo Wellness. “One of nature’s finest medicine; it is also known as ‘Green Blood’ due to its exceptionally high chlorophyll content of 70 per cent. This natural, high chlorophyll content makes the wheatgrass juice uniquely greener amongst

other green juices with detoxifying, healing and strengthening properties. As a mocktail, wheatgrass and chlorophyll together serve as a powerful purifier and help build a healthy cardiovascular system,” he says. Here are a few more ways, deciphered by Singh about how wheatgrass can help you stay healthy and disease-free, especially during the upcoming monsoon season: Detoxification & Liver Strengthener: Wheatgrass is 70 per cent rich in chlorophyll, which is good for cleansing the liver Gall bladder and purifying blood by eliminating various harmful toxins. One wheatgrass capsule a day can will purify each and every part of your body. Isn’t that amazing? Relieves Acidity & Aids Digestion: Wheatgrass consists of enzymes that help in digestion by breaking down the food you eat. The fibre in wheatgrass improves our gut health. Regular wheatgrass consumption can be useful in managing minor gastro-intestinal issues such as stomach ache or diarrhea.Wheatgrass also helps relieve constipation, stomach ulcers. Anti-Infection: There is more than enough evidence that wheatgrass consumption helps to slow the growth of certain infections. It can be particularly helpful in curing antibiotic-resistant infections,or also help you to avoid harsher antibiotics for minor infections such as cold and flu. Innumerable Health Benefits: With a gluten-free, soy-free, entirely vegan profile and low in calories, wheatgrass is a healthy ‘superfood’.To name only a few health benefits- it stabilizes our blood sugar levels, lowers cholesterol, reduces fatigue, boosts energy and metabolism, and promotes formation of red blood cells. Studies have also linked active wheatgrass consumption to reduce the risk of chronic inflammation, diabetes, and even various types of cancer. As mentioned, scientific evidence shows that wheatgrass bestows vitality to our bodies and can contribute to our fight against various diseases/infections. Staring right now, it would be a good practice to begin your day with a glass of wheatgrass juice every morning. (Puja Gupta can be contacted at puja.g@ians.in)

7 Techniques to Help

Reduce Stress

In the fast paced life of today, few things are certain. However, one is consistent across the board for all- stress. It may be because of little things but as it collects, it centres itself across certain stress points in the body and slows down the mind.

Ritika Tiwari

Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

W

hile stress is not a phenomenon that can be avoided, it is definitely one that can be checked and kept under control. This is important since stress is the cause of long term health conditions and is responsible for accelerating the body’s aging mechanism.

What should one do to combat stress?

The first step is undoubtedly to accept that stress will inevitably come your way. But this acceptance is not intended to be complacent, it is to ensure that you take proactive measures to ensure your own well-being in the short and long term. This has to do with introducing lifestyle changes that can impact your mind and body in subtle ways but effectively improve the quality of your daily life. One such lifestyle change is meditation and relaxation techniques. These have the potential to thoroughly change your mood and physical upkeep, hence let us go over 10

14

SEPTEMBER 2020

meditation techniques that can help you reduce stress.

1- Guided creative visualization

Guided creative visualization involves following sounds and voice to create a mental image of a peaceful environment or retreat to help the mind relax. While it is advisable to start out with guided visualization, with time one can become independent and perform them entirely by themselves.

2- Muscle Relaxation

This technique involves progressively tensing up the muscles across the body one by one, and then gradually releasing the pressure you have been holding onto.

3- Simple Yoga

Yoga is often a word that makes people think they’re about to undertake an exceptional endeavour but yoga is rather simple as there are endless poses and just practicing a

If you are experiencing physical or mental discomfort, it is highly advisable to start with these relaxation techniques. And if you are feeling well, it is all the more reason to take more care of yourself and continue feeling great! few a day can help significantly bring down stress.

4- Tai Chi

Like many incredible Asian knowhows that come our way and transform how we live, Tai Chi has the potential to reform your life. It is a slow and rhythmic progression of body movements, similar to a dance form, which is truly meditative in nature.

5- Relaxing music

While rock music changed the world as we know it, it is a good idea to listen to some soft music, classic pieces by Ludovico or bach, or traditional instruments and folk songs. These often have a tendency to wash away what thoughts are in one’s mind and re energize them.

6- Deep Breathing Techniques

Deep breathing techniques arose as a part of yoga, but have come to find their own reputed place. Deep breathing while keeping the mind free of judgement or thought helps improve concentration, physical health, and has advantages of stress management.

7- Mindful meditation Mindful meditation has unmatched potential to lower stress by controlling the levels of the hormone cortisol in the blood. It involves an awareness of the present and denial to distraction such as thought of the past or future. It involves being aware of just the moment while breathing deeply and relaxing the body in a comfortable position.

n modern world, it is inevitable to escape mental and emotional stress. Busy lifestyle, workload, family or financial issues, inactivity and poor eating habits induce a lot of stress which may further lead to lifestyle-related diseases. So, there is a great need to maintain mental peace and by making small changes in diet can have a huge impact on your mood. “Happy hormone” or “serotonin’ is a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in many biological processes and in regulation your good mood as well. If one is in a stressed situation then, serotonin levels go down and lead to symptoms like anxiety, aggression, impulsive behaviour, digestive issues, decreased appetite or craving to indulge into sweet or refined carbohydrate-rich foods. Aman Puri, CEO and Founder, Steadfast Nutrition, suggests certain food options that can help boost serotonin levels.

For Late M.F. Hussain, Rahat Indori was ‘just the greatest’

R

ahat Indori was five-years-old when the much loved poet Majaz died of a stroke after he was found on the freezing terrace of a country liquor shop in Lucknow’s Qaisar Bagh. As someone born to a poor cloth mill labourer, Rahat’s nightmare of financial insecurity increased watching the economically circumscribed lives of Urdu poets. Majaz was only one of them. Rahat worked hard educating himself right up to PhD on a subject which was to stand him in good stead in subsequent years -- Urdu mushaira. And what a performer he became in mushairas charging up to Rs 10 lakh for an appearance -- quite unprecedented. A brief digression might help explain the phenomenon of Rahat Indori, the Urdu poet who died in his hometown on August 11, at the age of 70. Govind Ballabh Pant, UP’s first Chief Minister and Union Home Minister died on the same day as one of Urdu’s greatest ghazal writers of the 20th century, Jigar Moradabadi. But while Pant made banner headlines in newspapers, Jigar received a single column notice, buried in the inside page.

This is precisely the reason why Rahat’s dominance of the media space following his death is such a phenomenon. Andy Warhol’s observation is succinct: society has reached a point where everybody will have fifteen minutes of fame. But applying this quip to Rahat Indori would be an insult. Rahat had an extraordinary follow-

ing for decades. What will be Rahat’s place in literature? There is a singular lack of endorsement of a large swathe of contemporary Urdu poetry by critics, scholars, connoisseurs and those who have grown in an informed Urdu milieu. Ironically, this turns out to be in inverse proportion to the unprecedented popularity of poets like Rahat.

The danger of feudal patronage drying up was real but mostly in North India. The South remains much the more civilized thanks to such institutionalized treats in dance and music annually as “The Season” in Chennai. In the Hindi belt, just as the feudal patronage tapered off, enlightened business houses like the Bharat Rams, Charat Rams and the Sarabhais stepped in massively. They have now been superseded by the unbelievable explosion of music on the social media. Everything, from the earliest recordings in 1900, is available with the flip of a switch. Compared to music, the graph of Urdu poetry is more complex. After Partition, it was assumed that interest in Urdu would decline. Josh Malihabadi’s dictum that “a language which does not give you bread will die” did operate to the extent that the number of scholars, critics, indeed even university faculties dwindled. A more formal and educated appreciation of poetry was a distinct casualty. Highbrow literature did begin to make way for more popular genres. But Urdu was able to frequently shock those who had written its obituary. Never was this shock more

telling than during the unprecedented success of Jashn-e-Rekhta, a celebration of Urdu in all its forms, an annual carnival which fills up half a dozen venues at New Delhi’s National Stadium day and night for three days. This brainchild of a remarkable cultural entrepreneur, Sanjiv Saraf, is an unparalleled contribution towards uplifting the drooping morale of Urduwallas. Urdu’s demise, in any case, was prematurely predicted after the resilience it had demonstrated in Bollywood in the field of lyrics, diction, dialogues both, their content and delivery. Little wonder, Rahat became a sought after lyricist with music directors like Anu Malik and A.R. Rehman.

Remember how Habib Jalib’s “Main naheen manta” became an iconic song during the anti-citizenship stir? Equally evocative and direct was Rahat’s couplet: “Sabhi ka khoon hai shamil yahan ki mitti mein; Kisi ke baap ka Hindostan thodi hai” (The blood of all of us has mingled in this soil; Hindostan is not the property of anybody’s father)

Artist M.F. Hussain became one of Rahat’s obsessive admirers after watching him keep a packed hall spellbound during a poetic symposium in Qatar. They became close friends. In fact, the cover of one of Rahat’s collections, has been designed by Hussain. There is stunning irony about his death. Rahat wrote: “Waba phaili hui hai har taraf Abhi mahaul mar jaane ka naheen” (A pandemic is spreading everywhere This is not the proper season to die.) The poet who wrote these lines is declared Corona positive on the night of August 10 and is dead by August 11. Is there a galloping strain of Corona?

As we step into September, we have officially entered the Virgo Season! In this month’s article, we decided to come back in a fun way by shedding some light on our opinion about which dog breeds would match well with different zodiac signs! Virgo Starting off with Virgo, we chose the Great Dane. Virgos are known to be shy at first with new faces, but once they open up, they can be the life of the party. Great Danes are usually known to be very reserved in nature; however, once they feel comfortable they will be completely devoted and gentle towards their loved ones. Being one of the largest dog breeds, Great Danes can be quite prideful, similar to Virgos. Yet, the level of confidence in this pair is incomparable to any other. They both love to nap! Their overall friendly demeanour and devoted attitude makes the Great Dane and Virgo the most desirable friends to have on your side.

zodiac Signs and their Dog Breeds!”

Libra Libras are one of the most interesting zodiac signs. Their personality can be a combination of charming, quiet, sociable, attentive and playful. For this sign, we’ve chosen the Pug! Pugs can be docile, yet stubborn. This combination goes well with the traits that Libras can relate to. Usually Libras are not in favour of having to make most of the decisions. They are easy going beings that prefer to follow the lead of someone they can trust. Similarly, pugs are very wise and loyal. They have no problem with following directions and getting through their day happily. Capricorn The Chinese Crested Dog represents this zodiac sign, in our opinion. This breed is very lively, affectionate, sweettempered, playful and alert. Capricorns are known to be very ambitious with their life goals. They can be sensitive, yet realistic and practical. Both enjoy the nature of their sensitivity through touch and love cuddles! Both the Chinese Crested Dog and Capricorns are very disciplined in their routines and mannerisms. They both appreciate consistency in their day. They’re both overall happy beings and enjoy the small things in life.

Scorpio We decided to match the zodiac sign Scorpios with the Yorkshire Terrier! Scorpios are one of the most loyal and honest people you will meet. They’re very brave and do not have a problem with making bold decisions. Their ambition is always to the next level, hence they are known to be wise. However, they are also known to be jealous, resentful and easily irritable by others’ decisions that they do not agree with whole-heartedly. They both love to talk as well. Yorkshire Terriers are a small bundle of intelligence, boldness and independence. They can be overly confident at times, which makes them quite courageous. However, they are also known to become very jealous of their loved ones and demand loads of attention from their owners, since they are so prideful. Their arrogant attitude can often make them irritable as well. Pisces This zodiac sign is known to be the final of all. Therefore, it has embraced all the lessons seen by the others before it. Hence, they understand the pain and happiness of life well. Their level of compassion and empathy overflows. This sign goes well with the dog breed, Chow Chow. They are quiet and loyal dogs that are also quite independent and aloof. Both are very understanding of their loved ones and display a lot of affection towards nurturing others.

Aries Dachshunds, in our opinion, are a great match of the zodiac sign Aries. Both are very lively and have a big personality. They are fun, spontaneous and courageous. However, they can also be quite stubborn, along with clever. Their devotedness to their loved ones is incomparable. They both draw others to them because of their playful spirit. They are fearless when it comes to trying new things and seeing what life has in store.

Cancer This sign is known to be loyal, protective and caring. They can be overly sensitive and moody at times as well. Similarly, the dog breed, Golden Retriever, is a trustworthy, compassionate and reliable dog to have by your side always. His nature is kind, friendly and confident. Both the Cancer sign and the Golden Retriever breed can be known to love others to a fault and forget boundaries!

Leo Just like the king of the jungle that you are as a lion or lioness, your breed matches with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. These dogs love to receive all the attention they can get and enjoy bathing in the spotlight. Along with the limelight, these furry companions can be very affectionate and caring towards their loved ones. Their playful and fearless energy always assists them with standing out in a crowd. A Leo can be very sociable due to his quick nature of being quite adaptable. Similarly, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has bundles of love to spread and share with new faces, as long as they’re friendly!

Sagittarius For this zodiac sign, we chose the ever-loved German Shepherd breed. This pair displays a curious nature, along with confidence, loyalty, intelligence, obedience and courage. They both enjoy having a routine and structure to tasks and things in life. They both are very alert towards those that surround them and have a very accurate sense of knowing who to be vary of and who to give unlimited amounts of love to. Sometimes, they both have so much love to give that they can forget boundaries. For this, they are known to be very watchful and observative by nature. Sagittarius and German Shepherds are both very fun to be around and can be spontaneous, along with intellectual beings.

Aquarius Make room please, for Aquarius’ Poodle has arrived. Poodles are a very intelligent, instinctual, alert and active breed. Their independent nature matches well with the zodiac sign of Aquarius. Both are overall easy going, yet assertive beings. Aquarius is known to be a humanitarian at heart and analytical of others. Poodles always observe and analyze a new person before deciding if they should be placed in their trust circle or danger zone. They both are very smart, however neither likes to listen too much to someone else unless they see sense in it.

Taurus Taurus’ zodiac sign relates to the animal of a Bull. They are very strong headed people, known to be extremely stubborn! For this sign, we decided to pair it with the Greyhound breed. Both are very affectionate, intelligent and even tempered. They both enjoy being athletic and keeping fit. However, they can both be quiet and gentle when needed as well.

Gemini This zodiac sign is known for its friendly nature. Therefore, who better than to pair them with the famous Husky! Huskies are very vocal dogs. Their love to communicate verbally what they’re feeling and express everything overly. Gemini love to communicate their feelings as well and can be very gentle beings. Both are outgoing and love nature. They are intelligent, but not the best at observing others completely. They are very trusting and have lots of love to shower on those that they are close to. Both Gemini and Huskies love to be held and cuddled. They can both be very independent and stubborn as well.

The reason behind Labour Day celebrations Labour Day in Canada is celebrated on the first Monday of September. It originally gave workers the chance to campaign for better working conditions or pay. The day is now part of a long weekend for many Canadians.

T

he origins of Labour Day can be traced back to April 15, 1872, when the Toronto Trades Assembly organized Canada’s first significant demonstration for worker’s rights. The aim of the demonstration was to release the 24 leaders of the Toronto Typographical Union who were imprisoned for striking to campaign for a nine-hour working day. At this time, trade unions were still illegal and striking was seen as a criminal conspiracy to disrupt trade. In spite of this, the Toronto Trades Assembly was already a significant organization and encouraged workers to form trade unions, mediated in disputes between employers and employees and signaled the mistreatment of workers. There was enormous public support for the parade and the authorities could no longer deny the important role that the trade unions had to play in the emerging

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Canadian society. A few months later, a similar parade was organized in Ottawa and passed the house of Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John Macdonald. Later in the day, he appeared before the gathering and promised to repeal all Canadian laws against trade unions. This happened in the same year and eventually led to the founding of the Canadian Labour Congress in 1883. Labour Day was originally celebrated in the spring but it was moved to the fall after 1894. A similar holiday, Labour Day is held on the same day in the United States of America. Canadian trade unions are proud that this holiday was inspired by their efforts to improve workers’ rights. Many countries have a holiday to celebrate workers’ rights on or around May 1. Source: www.timeanddate.com

SPINAL MUSCULAR ATROPHY TYPE 1 Symptoms

Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji

S

MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

MA 1 is a progressive muscle disease which is caused by a genetic defect transmitted as Autosomal Recessive with incidence of about 1 in 10,000 births. Boys are slightly more affected than girls. Due to genetic defect in SMN 1 ( spinal motor neuron ) there is no signal from spinal cord to nerves hence wasting of muscles. If untreated, it leads to death with respiratory failure.

4 Floppy baby. No reflexes in extremities. 4 Muscle weakness which is progressive. 4 Difficulty achieving developmental milestones, difficulty sitting/standing/ walking. 4 In small children: adopting of a frog-leg position when sitting (hips abducted and knees flexed). 4 Loss of strength of breathing muscles. 4 Weak cry , cannot suck or eat well. 4T ongue twitching or fasiculations.

Cause

Genetic defect at Chromosome 5q13 area which is inherited as Autosomal Recessive

Diagnosis

The most severe manifestation on the SMA spectrum can be noticeable to mothers late in their pregnancy by reduced or absent fetal movements. Symptoms are critical (including respiratory distress

and poor feeding) which usually result in death within weeks, in contrast to the mildest phenotype of SMA (adult-onset),

where muscle weakness may present after decades and progress to the use of a wheelchair but life expectancy is unchanged. The more common clinical manifestations of the SMA spectrum that prompt diagnostic genetic testing: Progressive bilateral muscle weakness (Usually upper arms & legs more so than hands and feet). Flattening of the chest wall when taking a breath and belly protrusion when taking a breath in.

No Reflexes

EMG Electromyogram shows poor signals from spinal cord to muscles. While the above symptoms point towards SMA, the diagnosis can only be confirmed with absolute certainty by blood test to check chromosome defect (Genetic Testing), it takes about 2 months to get this report.

Management

In past only supportive treatment was provided, most children did not survive past their second birthday. CPAP / BIPAP ventilation G Tube feeding. Nutritional Support Few years ago Spirnaza was found to decrease progression of muscle atrophy It is given intrathecal ( in spinal cord area). First dose is about $ 800,000 then every 4 months dose is about $ 350,000 Last year Gene therapy came in to light in America. The medicine is called Zolgensma which is a one time dose given by Intravenous route. The cost is about $ 2.8 Million CAD. So far, it is sill not available in Canada. Parents do fund raising for this treatment currently. Although only a few children have been through this treatment, the results are beneficial. A lot of children did not need ventilation support. It works best if given as early as possible. It does not have benefit after age 2.

Tania reigns her way into the industry

SEPTEMBER 2020

The ‘Qismat’ fame star Tania is one of the actresses who has proved their mettle in the industry. Though the actress is just 2 years old in the industry, she has made sure to leave an impact with each of her performances. Thus, it would not be wrong to say that she is one of the Pollywood divas to watch out for.

T

ania always made sure that each movie that she picks is high on content. After ‘Qismat’, which was a romantic comedy, Tania got on board with ‘Son Of Manjeet Singh’. The movie was about father-son bond; it was an emotionally overwhelming subject. Tania knew that the movie doesn’t have her in the main lead, yet she chose to be a part of it, as she knew that it is good cinema. Her other movie choices - ‘Rabb Da Radio 2’ and ‘Guddiyan Patole’ also prove the very point. Following her debut on September 21st, 2018, she made the whole industry her own with her talent and innocence. Her versatility allowed her to successfully play all the different roles in unique projects. In one of her press conferences she said, “there is a difference between being a heroine and an actress and I’ll be an actress”. Her career line is very different and she is proud of it as she says, “I want to create my own foot marks”. She worked in 4 movies as the second lead, yet she still left her mark on the audience’s hearts. In her latest blockbuster, she proved that it’s only hard work that can bring you to the top. From dancing to acting, to dialogue delivery and beauty, to expressions and versatility, she has been

delivering everything while also setting a mark of quality. As per her few behind the scenes posts, we too have seen her giving her 100 percent in everything she does. With a charming face and unbelievable talent, she is surely going to attain great heights in the industry. Not only is she great with her acting skills, many of the people around the world go gaga when they see the character and persona she carries with herself. When once asked during an interview about what beauty means to her, she had the most heartwarming reply. She said, “Accepting yourself is beauty.” “It’s not a dialogue, this is out of my personal experience. When I was in school, that time I also used to think and pay heed to what others are wearing or how they are looking, but as I grew up, I learnt that if you can’t accept yourself, then no one else will. The world is already so frustrated that in order to hide their shortcomings they will point out your flaws. But then if you accept the way you are, that is beauty,” she added.

would have represented myself just like that, instead of getting them surgically removed. I have an overlapping tooth, I didn’t get it removed. Until unless it is not hurting me, I would not get it removed, at least not just for the beauty standards. And since I accept it on a public platform, people are also accepting it, they like it.” Last but not least, Tania wants to spread the word that beauty means to be comfortable in your own skin. And since she knows it is the teenagers who most undergo this pressure of always looking their best, she said “I know kids nowadays go through this extreme pressure of looking better than their peers. Thus, they tend to lean more on fashion. But if you want to look good, have a positive attitude, be beautiful and flaunt it your way.”

Tania also said, “My character in the movie has freckles, and if even in real life I would have had freckles, then I

Terry’s Marathon of Hope took place in 1980 with the simple objective of informing Canadians of the importance of finding a cure for cancer. With fierce determination, he ran an average of 42 kilometres (26 miles) every day for 143 days. Terry was forced to end his run on September 1, 1980 when the cancer spread to his lungs. By February 1, 1981, Terry’s dream of

raising $1 for every Canadian was realized – the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope fund totaled $24.17 million. Terry died in June 1981. Terry Fox is not just a Canadian hero. Countries around the world stage annual events in support of Terry’s dream of finding a cure for cancer. These projects are made through CGI U’s “Commitment to Action” model, pioneered by President Clinton and the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) in 2005. From 2005 through 2016, more than 3,600 commitments were made through CGI which have

improved the lives of over 435 million people worldwide. In addition to receiving seed funding from the Action Fund for their commitments, all selected students who are new to the CGI U program will receive invitations to participate in CGI U 2021. With a network of 10,000 alumni from more than 1,100 schools, 160 countries, and all 50 states, CGI U students have made more than 7,000 Commitments to Action, positively impacting their hometowns, their college campuses, and communities around the globe. Furthermore, Sukhmeet is working on another project known as ‘Translations 4 Our Nations’ with Harvard Medical Student Victor Lopez-Carmen, University of Toronto Public Health Graduates Thilaxcy Yohathasan and Sterling Kathleen, and youth from around the world to translate COVID-19 information into over 130 local Indigenous languages from across the world. KPU Researcher awarded Canada Research Chair in South Asian Literary and Cultural Studies

K

Dr. Asma Sayed

wantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) researcher Dr. Asma Sayed has been named a Canada Research Chair (CRC) in South Asian literary and cultural studies. This is a Tier 2 Chair position. The CRC Program supports more than 2,200 chairs across Canada in research and studies across a variety of disciplines. This grant will provide $600,000 to support Sayed’s research over the next five years, with KPU co-sponsoring the position. “With three out of five KPU campuses in Surrey, Asma’s focus on South Asian literary and cultural studies is highly relevant to our communities,” says Dr. Deepak Gupta, associate vice president of Research at KPU. As an English faculty member specializing in postcolonial studies, Sayed is one of Canada’s leading researchers in literary narratives of exile and displacement from South Asia and East Africa. She is also versed in feminist literary and cultural studies related to these areas and in Indian cinema, particularly Bollywood (India’s Hindi language film industry). “Being a public intellectual, I think it’s important to address social justice issues,” she says. “I do so through the lens of literary and cultural texts.” In her role as a Canada Research Chair, Sayed will lead projects that include digitally archiving South Asian artistic productions from 1910 to 2010, a period of historic importance concerning the South Asian diaspora in Canada.

roots for light-hearted entertainment in these trying times

She will translate works written by Canadian writers of South Asian origin in their heritage languages, such as Hindi and Gujarati, into English. “I want to make these writers more accessible to Canadians,” said Sayed. “There’s a fair bit of work that’s being done in all these languages in Canada, but it’s not an area much known in mainstream Canadian literature.” Her research projects will include working on a book about South Asian Canadian writers and their artistic contributions to social justice discourse, with a particular focus on issues of race, class and gender. “Dr. Sayed’s focus on South Asian literary and cultural studies, embracing digital humanities, and training students via the research program elucidates and reinforces the Faculty of Arts’ plans to expand academic excellence and community impact, and fosters a research-positive culture within the Faculty of Arts and the broader institution,” says Dr. Diane Purvey, dean in the faculty of arts at KPU. “We are particularly pleased with the opportunities the CRC provides to train students, advance their research skills, and deliver career-broadening opportunities.” “Her work exemplifies impactful, community-engaged research and scholarship,” adds Gupta. “It also expands innovative learning opportunities for our students that enhances their polytechnic university experience.”

ollywood superstar Akshay Kumar feels people are on a lookout for light-hearted entertainment more than ever before, amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“Movies like (‘Good Newwz’) remind me why I love humour and films so much. It is such a well-rounded, balanced of comedy, romance and drama -- a mix that I think everyone loves to enjoy. Especially in these trying times, a little bit of fun and light-hearted entertainment can lighten up one’s mood,” Akshay said. “This film is also special for me as Bebo (Kareena Kapoor) and I have come together after a while, and we had a blast! I also had the opportunity to work with Kiara (Advani) and Diljit (Dosanjh), both of whom are terrific actors,” he added. Also starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kiara Advani and Diljit Dosanjh, “Good Newwz” is about two couples who are trying to have a baby through IVF. Talking about the film, Kareena, who is expecting her second baby, said: “The ‘Good Newwz’ journey for me has been quite enriching as I got to portray varied emotions that are attached to motherhood, and bringing them alive on screen was a delight. It’s a happy-go-lucky film that can relate to people from all walks of life.” The film had its television premiere on Zee Cinema. Source: IANS

Jim Carrey admires Kanye West H ollywood star Jim Carrey says rapper Kanye West is one of the great characters of our zeitgeist.

Carrey opened up about his admiration for West in an episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher”, reports people.com.

During the conversation, the 58-year-old star spoke about his semi-autobiographical new book, “Memoirs And Misinformation”, which is about a character named Jim Carrey and includes other characters like Nicolas Cage, Charlie Kaufman and Gwyneth Paltrow. One of the characters is West, who speaks to Carrey’s character about an alien invasion. “At the end, Kanye West says, ‘You need not be afraid. They speak to me in supernatural voices. I am one with their jam’. And I am not sure he didn’t say that this week,” Maher told Carrey. The comedian laughed and said: “It’s a very strange thing where parody becomes very parallel with reality. But we’ve got to make these things, you know. (Kanye West) is one of the great characters of our zeitgeist at this moment and I wanted him to have a place in it.” “No matter what he’s doing. I can’t figure it out,” Carrey added. Carrey’s comments come a few weeks after West broke down in tears at his first presidential campaign rally. At the time, West also revealed he and wife Kim Kardashian West considered getting

an abortion when she found out she was pregnant with their daughter North in 2012. West later addressed his emotional reaction on Twitter, writing: “I cried at the thought of aborting my first born and everyone was so concerned about me.” “I’m concerned for the world that feels you shouldn’t cry about this subject,” he added. Last week, West, who has bipolar disorder, apologised to Kim on Twitter for publicly sharing such private details about their family. “I would like to apologise to my wife Kim for going public with something that was a private matter. I did not cover her like she has covered me. To Kim I want to say I know I hurt you. Please forgive me. Thank you for always being there for me,” he wrote. Source: IANS

Grandmother’s beauty tips a skin regime is similar to having a balanced diet for your skin. This way you can adhere to certain rituals for your skin that you must abide by every day before you head to bed or start your day.

L

ike every year, this new year also brought in a lot of resolutions that we promised to keep. One such common resolution was pampering our skin and while there is a huge possibility that we have done absolutely nothing towards it. But there is something about grandma’s tips that create a sense of credibility one could always fall back upon. One can easily follow tips which are simple and easy. Dr Nirupama Parwanda, Dermatologist & Founder - Zolie Skin Clinic, has curated the simplest and yet most effective tips for your skin.

Wash your face twice - Let’s start with the basics. To have a healthy and clear skin you must wash whatever has gotten accumulated on the surface of your skin. An unclean skin will block your pores and not only make it dull-looking but will also trigger problems like acne and allergies. While two is not a fixed number it is nevertheless the least you could do. Depending upon the kind of work you do and the kind of weather you are facing you can decide how many times you must wash your face.

Sleeping beauty - The consequences of your bad lifestyle habits are quite evident on your skin if you don’t improve. Having a sound sleep of 8 hours is the least one could do to have a healthy and glowing skin. Avoid having an erratic sleep pattern and do not let your work create a lot of stress for you either. Moisturize - Regardless of your skin type, this is something you can never avoid. Many men and women skip moisturizer just because their skin is oily. Having oily skin doesn’t mean you don’t need to moisturize. It simply means you need a moisturizer which is more forgiving on your skin. If you are someone who has dry skin, then moisturizing with coconut oil can be your best bet. Source: IANS

Use ubtan - Grandmothers during their times did not have a plethora of beauty products that we have today. Thus, there’s a huge part inside them that wants their children to abstain from chemical-based products. One such way is by using homemade ubtans regularly. One of the easiest and oldest ubtans in grandma’s book is: Besan curd pack - Just mix some besan (gram flour)

along with 2 tablespoons of curd and 1 tablespoon of honey. Mix it thoroughly and apply it evenly on your face. Once it has dried out, use some rose water to scrub it out from your face. This ubtan is so easy that you can easily prepare it minutes before taking a bath.

Eat healthy – ‘You are what you eat’. It’s as simple as it

sounds. All that caffeine that you think your body yearns to keep you awake is eventually going to take a bad toll on your skin. In fact, whatever you eat has a direct impact on your skin. Thus, eating healthy food and increasing your dependency on fruits is going to help your skin in the long run.

Drink loads of water- I cannot emphasize this point

enough. One thing that you cannot skip upon is drinking 3 litres of water each day regardless of the weather. Water is a boon sent from heaven just for your skin. Drinking water can help you flush out toxins which clear all the pimples and bumps from the surface of your skin. Trust me when I say this; water can bring a revolutionary change for your skin.

Pro-tip: Do not confuse sugary drinks for water. Sug-

ary drinks in no form are equivalent to water and in no way should be used to replace it.

Have a skin regime - Even if it just includes wash-

ing your face and moisturizing it have a skin regime. Having www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

A Girl in a Whirl Continued issue (Part 41)

I had learned many new English grammar rules, words and inspiring quotes during my study. I began reading ‘Marvelous English Speaking Course’ and my other English books very diligently. I really fell in love with learning English. My teacher recommended me that I get Cambridge books for IELTS with answers and also study from them. I also began reading English newspapers as we were also taught English in the class from them. I got a kind of busy. However, I was not able to attend my classes regularly for my depression. Baljit’s mom was taking care of me and Nancy so much. After about three months, Meenu got a call from Canada Embassy to appear for an interview. In about two weeks, Baljit also got a call from Canada Embassy. Baljit and I were asked to appear for an interview after three weeks of Meenu’s interview. It was the second marriage of Baljit as well as mine. The embassy was very strict with people marrying a second time and sponsoring them to Canada. They investigated very deeply whether that was a marriage of convenience. Meenu went for her interview and she got immigration visa without

any hitch. I was very happy. A week before our interview, I took Nancy with me and left for India. We reached Amritsar airport at 4 A.M. Baljit, Sunny, Meenu and dad had come to receive us. Dad and Sunny were very happy, especially to see Nancy. Nancy had a very fair complexion. She was roly-poly and looked like a Barbie-doll in her pink frock. I hugged Meenu. “Meenu, How are you, my chirpy sister?”, I asked. “I’m fine. How are you didi? How are all in Canada?”, Meenu asked me with a fake smile. She had changed so much. I wondered where Meenu’s all cheerfulness had gone. Sunny set our luggage in the car. Baljit was on the driver’s seat. Sunny was beside him. Dad, Meenu, Nancy and I were at back seats. What sort of relation I had developed with Meenu! How will the relation move ahead? The second one with Baljit! It was no less than a soap opera or a movie story. How different Bollywood movies are from reality? How beautiful dreams we weave watching those movies! All of a sudden, I felt anxiety and passed out. When I regained consciousness, my dad was sprinkling water on my face. Baljit had pulled over and stopped the car.

“Are you alright, Sonia?”, dad asked me. “Yes, I’m fine. I don’t know what happened, I just felt giddy and fell unconscious.”, I said. “May be, it happened due to change of weather for you.”, Dad said. He gave me a few segments of an orange with salt. I felt better. We reached Ludhiana without stopping at Baljit’s house at Jalandhar. I hugged my mom and we both couldn’t help crying for long. God knows what had happened to us, both of us wept unstoppably for long. Finally dad scolded and asked us to stop that. “Look, our Nancy has come. And Baljit is also here. Just welcome them too.”, Dad said to change the topic. My mom first cleaned my face with her dupatta, and then her own. Mom wanted to hold Nancy but Nancy resisted. I held Nancy from Meenu and Meenu Went to the kitchen to help mom. Continued in next edition

Traveling amid coronavirus pandemic: What you need to know Nikita Sharma

Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

b e co w

Over the last few months, novel coronavirus has been the hottest topic of discussion worldwide. Even now, WHO continues to recommend against the application of travel to countries experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks. But, in case you need to travel, be mindful.

C

oncerns over BY AJAY SURI COVID-19 mail@indusage.com.au are steadily growing now that the novel coronavirus has spread to every continent — with the exception of Antarctica. And as the virus grows globally, being smart about planning travel, be it domestic or international, and how to protect yourself is crucial.

Here are some helpful guidelines to follow. Do your research

Countries across the world have been updating their travel warnings as the virus continues to spread to regions across the globe. Many counties have declared emergencies and even closed their borders for travel. So, before planning your itinerary, check the health notices and the particular ountry’s travel advisories for any guidance on where – or where not – to visit.

Several airlines and cruise lines have also suspended or altered their service to specific irports and ports of call. Remember to consult h your travel providers to ensure there won’t be changes in service to your destination.

To avoid contact, do not touch shared or potentially germ-ridden surfaces and avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands. When you are able, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. mize your risk while flying, make sure to properly clean your plane seat by using a pack of antibacterial wipes with alcohol to wipe down everything in your personal area, including the tray table, armrests, seatbelt handle, air vents and call buttons. The same cleaning practice can be applied to train or bus seats. A 2018 study of aircraft cleanliness further suggested that seats’ headrests may be the germiest surfaces on the plane, with some testing positive for E. coli bacteria — so you may want to invest in a reusable seat cover that can be placed over your seat, and then thrown it in the wash after use.

Be careful what you touch

Respiratory illnesses, like coronavirus, generally spreads through contact with an infected person’s saliva or mucus. Droplets from a sneeze or cough can land on surfaces and potentially infect a nearby passenger sharing the enclosed space.

but you can at least keep your own personal items clean and disinfected to minimize your chances of infection. Always travel with disinfecting wipes and alcohol-based hand sanitizer, if possible, to wipe down surfaces and clean your hands if a sink is not immediately available.

Know the signs

If you do get sick while traveling, it is important to know the signs of coronavirus and seek immediate medical attention if you believe you have contracted the virus. Symptoms of the pneumonia like illness include fever, cough and shortness of breath. It is important to note, however, that the coronavirus symptoms are common to a number of viruses. If you think you may have been exposed, call your health care professional immediately and tell them your travel history. Calling first is important so they can be prepared. Do not go directly to the hospital, where you may infect other people.

Get travel insurance

Finally, consider travel insurance when booking your trip. Though most travel insurances only cover outbreaks in specific instances, having insurance coverage with a “Cancel for Any Reason” policy can help save you some money if you need to cancel your itinerary due to medical reasons or another emergency.

To avoid contact, do not touch shared or potentially germ-ridden surfaces and avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands. When you are able, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. You cannot always control your environment while traveling,

ost of the airlines across the globe are also exding travel waivers for ticketholders scheduled y to coronavirus-affected destinations, allowing m to rebook, or cancel their travel altogether, without incurring additional fees.

What to pack

Travel with all necessary travel documentation, including health insurance cards, a press release from AAA recommends. Also, plan ahead by packing extra supplies such as additional doses of medication or clothing in case your trip is delayed due to the outbreak.

Disinfect your plane seat

Even though all the airlines are conducting mandatory disinfecting of the aircrafts and routine cleanups, it is important to take necessary precautions at your end too. In order to mini-

Consider me retired:

MS Dhoni

bids adieu to international cricket Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on August 15, announced his retirement in an Instagram post.

D

honi posted a video montage with pictures at different points of his career along with a caption: “Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired (sic).” The two-time World Cup winning skipper didn’t give details of the development as to whether he is retiring from the game entirely or if he is only bowing out from international cricket. Dhoni is currently part of the Chennai Super Kings training camp at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and is expected to lead the team in the 2020 season of the Indian Premier League which is set to start on September 19. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan had recently said that the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman would be a part of the franchise, even for the 2021 and 2022 editions of the IPL. Dhoni’s last appearance in the blue jersey came in India’s semi-final defeat to New Zealand at the 2019 World Cup after which he took a break from professional cricket. In this time, Rishabh Pant and later KL Rahul took his place as wicketkeeper of the Indian limited-overs side. Earlier, head coach Ravi Shastri had said that Dhoni’s chances to make it to the Indian team that goes to the 2020 T20 World Cup - originally scheduled to be held in Australia in OctoberNovember this year - would depend on his performance in the IPL. However, both the IPL and the T20 World Cup were postponed due to the COVID-19

44

SEPTEMBER 2020

pandemic. Considered one of the most successful captains of all time in international cricket, Dhoni led the Indian team to victory in the 2007 World T20, which was also his first assignment as skipper of the team in any format, the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. As Test captain, he also led the team to the numero uno spot in the ICC rankings for the first time ever in 2009. He is also the only captain to win all three ICC trophies. He has also led India to victories in the Asia Cup in 2010 and 2016. Dhoni also holds the record for most wins as an Indian captain in ODIs and T20Is, and most back-to-back wins by an Indian captain in ODIs. He made his international debut in an ODI against Bangladesh in December 2004 and made his Test debut a year later against Sri Lanka. He amassed 10,773 runs in 350 ODIs and 1,617 runs in 98 T20Is. The wicketkeeper-batsman also has 229 ODI sixes - the most for an Indian batsman. Dhoni had retired from Test cricket on December 30, 2014 and in the longest format of the game, he played 90 matches and scored 4,876 runs at an average of 38.09. Source: IANS

“52 Red Pills” a hyper-learning journey

A

uthor, podcaster and blogger Fred Ferriss has famously said: “Forget New Year’s Resolutions and Conduct a Past Year Review instead.” Inspired by this, Eika Banerjee, a top honcho in the leadership development space, and her husband Siddharth, who operates in the marketing and IT sectors, while sitting amidst the "lush greens of a tiger reserve" on the New Year’s Eve of 2018, decided to take the bull by the horns as it were.

The outcome? “ Red Pills - A New Age Playbook To Become Healthy, Wealthy and Wise”. The authors have been together since reading for their MBAs at FMS-Delhi and are Chevening Scholars at Oxford University.

“When faced with a situation, both of us would always seek to enquire, learn, distil and then act (wisely or unwisely so), rather than wait to get answers from somewhere or to follow an existing paradigm,” the authors write. So, how did they take their journey of self-learning "into the next orbit” By embarking on a “52 Weeks Learning Challenge”, ambitiously penning down a long list of 63 actions or subjects they would cover across the 52 weeks of 2018, encompassing a vast gamut of ideas and themes, from the art of making fine coffee to mind maps, from how billionaires think or how pro-marathoners train, from mindfulness to ‘muay thai’ (kickboxing) and from ancient medicine practices to cutting-edge technology. To make all this possible in a disciplined manner, they had to ruthlessly prioritize their time, given their demanding corporate roles and the need to spend leisure time with their two daughters as well as family and friends. “Hence, we drew up a ‘Sacrifice List’ that basically axed certain activities to make time for this weekly discipline of self-learning. Binge-watching shows and movies on Netflix was now a thing of the past. We even cut down on attending corporate parties to once a week. And so on,” the authors explain.

They then pose five questions for you to define your learning journey:

4 What do you love most about yourself as an individual/couple/team/family? 4 What do you enjoy doing (alone/together) the most? 4 What are the themes (cuisines, travel, dancing, wines, movies literature and sports are a few examples) you want to explore (alone/together)? 4 How do want to explore yourself/your togetherness/your themes? For instance, would you like cook experimental meals, learn new dances, play sports, watch and analyze movies, explore newer workouts and so on? 4 What is your long list of seventy things you want to do, learn about, practice and/ or create? Thereafter, draw up a table to map out your resources and assign responsibilities. This is how it should look: S. No/Category/Expert/Resources/Responsibility.

Choose a day that suits you and then, at the end of every week of the coming year, do the following exercise:

4 Tick off the item/topic you covered from your list. 4 Create your own log and record of what you did, how you did it, what you learnt and what you would like to do again. 4 Maintain it also in the form of photographs, written experiences in your journal or diary, videos, on your social media feeds and/or at the end of every topic. Towards the end of the year, “you will have your own 52 RedPills journey compilation, filled with shared experiences and wonderful memories to keep you company as you evolve yourself” “Through the year, you will have learned, laughed, fallen, recovered, shared, created, danced, evolved and oh so much more.” “You will have explored. “You will have lived,” the authors write. How did the title come about? “We drew inspiration from Morpheous in the movie 'Matrix', who offers Neo the choice of taking the blue pill or the red pill. The latter denotes an adventure across uncharted paths, and so, we have named our hyper-learning journey across 52 weeks of 2018 as “52RedPills”, the authors write.

This is a book you ignore at your own peril. Happy 2020! Source: IANS

THE SILENT

PANDEMIC

Youth create a network of safe spaces for domestic abuse survivors “In this time of crisis, we must support those fighting the silent pandemic of domestic abuse happening behind closed doors.” says Vedanshi Vala, Co-Founder and Executive Director of BOLT Safety Society, a youth-run, federallyregistered not-for-profit. “Our new initiative, Safe Hubs, is about taking immediate action to support victims and survivors.” Domestic violence reports have surged astronomically as more people are home, isolated, in alignment with COVID-19 health guidelines. The Safe Hubs project collaborates with local businesses to create a network of safe locations, and is supported with a grant from TakingITGlobal, the Government of Canada, and Canada Service Corps. “Safe Hubs is the start of a community-wide movement to create awareness around the somewhat taboo subject of abuse, rape, and domestic violence. Everyone should be comfortable talking

about these issues, and Safe Hubs is paving the way.” says Ravi Nichols, Co-Founder, Financial and Human Resource Manager at BOLT Safety. Upon the launch of the pilot project on August 31st, Safe Hubs resources will be available for free to members who join BOLT Safety’s mobile platform (boltsafety.org/join). Members will be able to find safe locations on a map, get information on support resources, watch self-defense tutorials from community experts, and connect with their own network of ‘Safe Buddies’. BOLT Safety is continuously working on expanding their network of safe spaces, and currently has confirmed partnerships with the Sabzi Mandi franchise and Apple Farm Market. Interested businesses and community leaders are encouraged to contact BOLT Safety to support the initiative (boltsafety.org). “Safety is our common right, responsibility, and duty. Let’s create safer homes and communities, together.” says Vala.

The statement read: “It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman. Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016 and battled with it these last four years as it progressed to stage IV.” “A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy,” the statement said. “He died in his home, with his wife and family by

his side. The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time,” the statement concluded. He is survived by his wife, singer Taylor Simone Ledward. Boseman became a global star playing the titular superhero in the 2018 film, “Black Panther”. He also played the role in “Captain America: Civil War”, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”. His last release was Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods”, which opened digitally on Netflix on June 12 this year amid lockdown. Starting his career on television with shows like “Law & Order”, “CSI: NY” and “ER”, Boseman gained prominence with films where he played real-life figures, such as baseball great Jackie Robinson in “ 42”, and soul singer James Brown in “Get On Up”.
