Publisher’s Note

Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous. Love is never boastful or conceited. It is never rude or selfish. It does not take offense and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins, but delights in the truth. It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes.

Family and life are precious, so don’t wait for the 14th of the month to say it out loud. In this edition we also have some wonderful reads for everyone. Amid dhols, chants, rallies, Hindus across the world say ‘Jai Shri Ram’ my Hindu friends and my constituency and around the world. May you all be blessed,” Congressman Rich McCormick said in a statement, greeting the Hindu community. The event was broadcast live at approximately 300 locations across the US, including at Times Square which was lit up with vibrant colors and Lord Ram’s images.

A

mid the sounds of

dhols and firecrackers, distribution of sweets, rallies and chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’, Hindus in India and abroad came together to celebrate the ‘Prana Pratishtha’ ceremony of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya on January 22. The US, where Indian-Americans make up approximately 1.35 per cent of the population, kicked off the celebrations almost a week before the temple’s consecration with massive car rallies in Houston and California. Carrying saffron banners with images of Ram Lalla and the temple, more than 1,100 Hindus took part in a Bay Area car rally, and a huge crowd gathered at the iconic Times Square in New York, singing hymns in praise of Lord Ram. Laddos were also distributed as ‘prasad’ by the members of the ‘Overseas Friends of Ram Mandir’ at Times Square. In addition, the US Chapter of the VHP erected over 40 billboards in 10 states, including Texas, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and Georgia. Over 100 Tesla-owning Hindus gathered at Sri Bhaktha Anjaneya Temple in Maryland and arranged their cars in such a way that it formed the word “Ram’’ when seen from a bird’s eye view.

In Mauritius, where the population consists of around 48 percent Hindus the community came together to light ‘diyas’ at the temples and recited the ‘Ramayan Paath.’ In addition, the government also announced a two-hour off to Hindu officials on the day of the ceremony. Car rallies were also organized in London as well as Sydney, amidst chants and bhajans in praise of the deity. In London, the rally commenced from The City Pavillion on Collier Road and traveled through East London before returning to the starting point. January 22 was declared as ‘Ayodhya Ram Mandir Day’ in the towns of Oakville and Brampton in Canada’s Ontario province. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and his Oakville counterpart Rob Burton said the consecration “holds immense cultural, religious, and historical significance for Hindus worldwide, signifying the culmination of a centuriesold dream.” In the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, Hindus organized cultural events and sang hymns in praise of their deity. In France ‘Ram Rath Yatra’ started from Place De La Chapelle at 12 pm and culminated at the Eiffel Tower’s, Place De Trocadero, by 3 pm.The ceremony at the Ganesha temple in La Chapelle included an elaborate puja, aarti, prasad distribution, and a cultural show. In neighboring Nepal, Janakpur, which is considered to be the birthplace of Lord Ram’s wife Sita, was lit up and 1,25,000 lamps illuminated the Janaki temple along with ‘aartis’ in praise of Lord Ram and Sita. Ram Lalla’s idol was installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the grand new temple in Ayodhya on January 18, and the rituals which began on January 16, culminated on January 22, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other dignitaries attending the event.

hen applying for life insurance, you go through underwriting, which determines whether you can get coverage and how much it will cost. In this article, we’ll guide you through the eight simple steps to ensure your application goes smoothly.

Your guide to life insurance: Eight simple steps Life insurance is an essential tool for safeguarding your family’s financial future.

Step 1: Complete Your Application Accurately The first step is to fill out your application carefully. Being honest about your health, lifestyle, and medical history is crucial. I think it’s essential to provide accurate information. Step 2: Health Assessment Next, you may have a health check. This involves measuring your height, weight, and blood pressure. A blood test and urine check may also be performed to understand your health. Step 3: Reviewing Health History The insurance company might look at your medical history from the last few years using the Medical Information Bureau (MIB). They use this information to see what your previous applications said about your health. Step 4: Disclose Your Medications They’ll also check the medications you’ve been prescribed in recent years. It’s important to tell them about all your medications and medical conditions.

Just so you know, as an independent Insurance Advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I can help you explore various insurance plans and coverage options that are suitable for your needs and budget. Whether it’s life insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, or other types of coverage, I’m here to assist you in making the right choices. Step 5: Doctor’s Insight If the insurance company has more questions about your health, they may ask your doctor for a report. This report helps them understand your health better. Step 6: Your Driving Record Your driving history is also essential. They’ll review traffic tickets and accidents from the last seven years. Having a recent DUI on your record might affect your ability to get insurance. Step 7: Financial Check The insurance company will also check your financial stability. If you’ve had a bankruptcy, it might affect your

risk classification, making life insurance more expensive. Step 8: The Final Decision After all the checks and paperwork, the insurance company will inform you whether you’re eligible for insurance and how much it will cost. Conclusion Life insurance is a vital step in protecting your family’s financial well-being. Understanding these eight steps will help you navigate the process effectively. Please be honest and provide accurate information to get the best coverage for your family’s future.

Ayodhya ‘Pran Pratishtha’

F

rom snow-capped peaks in Kashmir to sun-drenched beaches in Kanyakumari, the echoes of Ram’s name have woven a tapestry of devotion across India. Now, this devotion is taking a tangible form in the shape of the historic Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The majestic temple stands tall as a symbol of India’s unity and devotion, not just in grandeur, but also in the tapestry of contributions woven across states and borders. PM Modi’s ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative resonates deeply with this notion and is a testament to the unwavering faith and generosity that transcends state borders, uniting a nation in the pilgrimage for a temple. The core of the temple stands majestic, covered in the pristine white elegance of Rajasthan’s Makrana marble. Karnataka’s Charmouthi sandstone, when it comes to the exquisite carvings of deities, takes center stage. While pink sandstone from Rajasthan’s Bansi Paharpur has been utilized in the entrance gate’s imposing figures.

divine bell, Gujarat also presents a 700 kg chariot carrying a special ‘nagada’ crafted by the All India Darbar Samaj. Black stone used for Lord Ram’s idol originates from Karnataka. From the Himalayan foothills, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura have offered intricately carved wooden doors and handcrafted fabrics, standing as gateways to the divine realm. The list of contributions doesn’t end here. Brassware, hails from Uttar Pradesh, while polished teakwood, arrives from Maharashtra. The story of the Ram Mandir is not just about materials and geographical origins. It’s about the countless thousands of talented craftsmen and artisans who have poured their hearts, souls, and skills into this sacred endeavor. The Ram Mandir is not just a monument in Ayodhya; it’s a living testament to the unifying power of faith. Every stone, every carving, every bell, every fabric tells a story of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ that transcends geographical boundaries and unites hearts in a collective spiritual journey.

The contributions go far beyond building materials. Gujarat’s generosity extends to the divine melody that will echo through its halls, giving a majestic 2100 kg Ashtadhatu bell. Alongside this

Why is the Ram Lalla idol at Ayodhya black in color?

long and patient wait for a Ram Temple at Lord Rama’s Janmabhoomi has finally come to an end on January 22, with a grand consecration ceremony. While images of the Ram idol that was installed at the temple were released earlier - both with eyes covered and uncovered, but devotees could see the actual idol on the day of the ceremony. The 51-inch tall Ram idol is made from black stone and depicts the deity as a five-yearold child in a standing posture. But, many might wonder: Why is the Ram idol black in color? The idol of Ram lalla, carved by Karnataka’s renowned sculptor Arun Yogiraj, is made of black stone. The black stone, known as Krishna Shila, was extracted from Gujjegowdanapura in Jayapura hobli in the Mysuru district. This Krishna Shila stone was chosen because it does not react to anything like acid. This means that when milk is poured on the idol, the stone will not react or corrode over time. Krishna Shila is bluish-grey and when you apply coconut and burnt cocoa powder, it turns black. Over the years, it hardens and does not react to anything. There are 5,000-year-old temples where idols have been made using Krishna Shila stones and have till now not reacted to any weather conditions.

the holiest of all,” he stated. PM Modi also praised the Indian judiciary, saying that they ensured justice, referring to the landmark judgment in the Ram MandirBabri Masjid dispute. “The legal battle over the existence of Lord Ram went on for decades. I would like to express my gratitude to the judiciary of India for doing justice,” he said at the event. He added that Lord Ram is the “spirit of Indian Constitution”.

O

n the day of the ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that after years of struggle, “Ram Lalla (child Lord Ram) is here”. Addressing a gathering of thousands of people in Ayodhya, following the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ rituals at Ram temple, he said that he is still “shaking” from the spiritual experience of the inauguration of Ram temple, which happened four years after the landmark judgment by the Supreme Court. The Prime Minister said that Ram is “not a dispute” but “a solution”. “I have firm belief and immense faith that today, the devotees of Ram are completely absorbed in this historic moment. The devotees of Ram, in every corner of the country and the world, are deeply feeling this. This moment is divine, this moment is

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Lauding the historic moment of the temple inauguration, the Prime Minister said that Indians have tackled a “complicated past” but the future looks bright from now on. He said that he is overjoyed that Lord Ram will no longer reside in a tent. “Today our Ram has arrived after generations of waiting. On this auspicious occasion, congratulations to everyone. There is so much to tell, but there is a lump in my throat,” he said. He further said, “January 22, 2024 is not merely a date but marks the advent of a new era. The legal battle over the existence of Lord Ram went on for decades. Ram is mentioned in the first verse in our Constitution, yet it took so many decades for this to

happen. That Constitution finally holds true to its mention.” “Today, I also apologize to Lord Shri Ram. There must be something lacking in our effort, sacrifice and penance that we could not do this work for so many centuries. Today the work has been completed. I believe that Lord Shri Ram will definitely forgive us today,” he said. The Prime Minister said, “I got the opportunity to travel from Sagar to Saryu. From Sagar to Saryu, the same festive spirit of Ram’s name is visible everywhere. Ram is not fire, Ram is energy. Ram is not a dispute, Ram is the solution. Ram is not just ours, Ram is everyone’s. Ram is not current, Ram is eternal.” He termed the Ram Mandir opening as a “humbling moment”. He urged all to light a Ram Jyoti at home. He also took a dig at those who questioned India’s social fabric. The Prime Minister noted that he heard many verses from the epic Ramayana while reaching the temple for the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony. After the Pran Pratishtha ceremony, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath presented a model of the Ram temple, made in silver, to Prime Minister and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.

Surrey Police Board Releases 2024 Provisional Budget

T

he Surrey Police Board is releasing further information on its 2024 Surrey Police Services (SPS) provisional budget to provide clarity, transparency, and accountability during the transition from an RCMP detachment to a municipal police department. The budget, provided to the City of Surrey on November 30, 2023, was developed with guidance from Jessica McDonald, Strategic Implementation Advisor, and with support from Deloitte, an independent accounting firm. The total 2024 budget is $141.5 million. Based on the City of Surrey’s current financial reports, the 2024 provisional budget fits within the City of Surrey’s financial framework and accounts for only 42% of their allocated policing funds. The 2024 provincial budget includes: 4 119.5 million for ongoing oper-

ations 4 $6.6 million for equipment and capital expenditures 4 $15.4 million for investments through the previously established Policing Transition Project Fund. Based on this budget, by the end of 2024, SPS will have 526 police officers, making up approximately 67% of the City’s targeted policing strength for 2024. “The budget is predicated on the growth of Surrey Police Service and the corresponding winding down of the RCMP. The efficient and orderly transition to SPS follows the guidelines set out by the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General and will reduce transition costs by eliminating the administrative overlap of running two police agencies in Surrey,” said Mike Serr, Surrey Police Board Administrator. “There is a lot of misinformation on the policing costs in the

City of Surrey, and I believe that budget transparency is important for the people of Surrey to understand the costs and the transition plans for SPS.” The budget was based on several key planning assumptions, including: 4 The same organizational structure and number of officers as is currently in place with the RCMP 4 Alignment with City policing objectives and performance measures 4 Cooperation from the RCMP to ensure that RCMP deployment and costs will reduce in tandem with the growth of SPS 4 Two-and-a-half years remaining in the transition period from RCMP to SPS 4 RCMP costs will be reduced as SPS operations are ramped up 4 Budget alignment with the current City of Surrey Financial Plan and on available onetime financial resources

SPS is currently made up of 346 police officers and the 2024 budget allocates a hiring target of 180 additional police officers, which would bring the total number of SPS officers to 526 by the end of 2024. “The Board remains committed to transparency and open dialogue and will take every step available to make sure people are heard and, most importantly, kept safe through this transition,” said Mr. Serr. “I have an open and standing offer to brief the Surrey City Council on this budget submission and to have open discussions about any amendments. To date, this invitation to discuss this budget proposal has not been accepted.” Of the 180 new police officers, SPS is targeting 135 experienced officers from across Canada and 45 recruits that will be trained at the Justice Institute of British Columbia.

stronger bonds.

Spread love to others. Actively taking the time to focus on being your best self and focusing on your family and friends enables you to be more compassionate and giving, and to love others in a better way. a delicate balance: Factors to create spaces high on positivity

O

ur mental space stands in direct proportion to our perception of physical space. Special cells in the Hippocampal regions of our brains are attuned to the geometry and arrangements of the spaces we inhabit. Read on to see the key factors that affect productivity and well-being, and how designers harness these factors to program these spaces creatively. Welldesigned spaces positively reinforce and address safety, social connectedness, ease of movement, and sensory stimulation. In addition, it has been found that the following 3 aspects greatly influence our built environment. Harmony “Architectural Cues can reinforce the desired behaviours that we would like to see enacted in specific place types,”says environmental psychologist and interior designer Migette Kaup. Harmony (or Decorum-as some architectural thinkers like to call it) is a key, albeit elusive principle that affects how spaces get perceived and inhabited. It is a complex mix of balance, proportion, symmetry and the rhythm of elements in the spaces we inhabit. Working from whole to the

part, Harmony-or the lack of it begins to affect us at the city level itself. In the design of cities and neighborhoods, it has been found that developing mental disorders like depression and chronic anxiety is because of “social stress”, because of the lack of social bonding and cohesion in neighborhoods. Urban planners nowadays use a principle called “triangulation”, where they arrange objects and artefacts in public spaces in ways that foster serendipitous interactions of people and spontaneous connections. In another study, it was found that people are strongly affected by building facades, and foster paths along routes that reinforce the positive feelings that these artefacts that line their travel path bring them. This could be used to re-look major road and pathway design and the land use patterns around them. In interior spaces, Harmony manifests in the following main ways: Size and shape of rooms, ceiling height and volume Arrangement and shape of furniture Openings to views

connecting the interior space to the environment. Ever wondered why in most offices the size of the CEO cabin/room is the biggest around? It might not be as undemocratic as you think! This has something to do with what Psychologists call “Construal Level Thinking”(CLT), where mental associations with physical environments catalyse creative thinking. For example, larger spaces with higher ceiling heights foster creative/high-level thinking and tasks the “30,000 ft view” on things, while smaller compact spaces foster focused and repetitive tasks. This could be a completely new way of looking at arrangements and programming of spaces in modern workplaces to optimise productivity and wellbeing. Color Color has a huge impact on the way a space behaves and the effect it has on the well-being of occupants. For example, Yellow, Green and orange- or “warm” colors, are thought to encourage communication and socialising. Purple, Deep Green, Red and Dark Green reflect a more pensive mood, but if applied in a minimal amount, can evoke a feeling of comfort. Optically, surfaces in cool colors seem to recede, whereas warm colors, such as orange and red, appear to be closer. Walls rendered in cool colors make the space feel like it’s expanding outward, while walls in warm hues can make the same space feel as if it were contracting. Designers use color to program spaces and zones contextually. An experiment conducted by the architect Shashi Caan at a trade show in New York in 2006 on the premise that color, creativity, and architectural space are interconnected, threw up some interesting results. Caan designed three rooms to be completely immersed in a primary color. She then invited show attendees to enjoy

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in any of the rooms. To make the color experience as pure as possible, she dressed her guests in achromatic hazmat suits, and even arranged for the food and drink to be white or clear. Among the things observed was that people in the blue room often gravitated toward the perimeter of the space during their stay, which is to say, they were motivated to explore boundaries, much as creatives do. Guests enveloped in red, on the other hand, tended to converge toward the centre, as if the walls were nudging them inward. Light Light is one of the most important aspects that affect how we perceive space, and can dramatically influence the way it is utilised and how effective it is. The source, whether artificial or natural, has a direct influence on our biorhythm and well-being. Color and Color temperature(measured in Kelvin-K), play an important role in how the volume of the spaces get perceived. The three main types of lighting that designers make use of- are ambient, task and accent. Ambient light is the general illumination surrounding the environment or subject. It is indirect and soft, reducing contrast and shadows and is achieved through natural and artificial light sources, as well as reflection from surfaces. Task light is that which illuminates a small, specific area. A good example of this is a desk lamp which allows one to add more light to complete a working task. Accent light is used to add highlight, drama and focus to interior spaces. This includes directional lighting placed on artwork, or recessed floor lighting to graze the surface of a textured material.

Recognizing the Signs: Is your furry friend trying to tell you something?

D

ogs are man’s best friend for a reason, and there is little we wouldn’t do for our four-legged family members. However, sometimes it can be hard to know when they need to see a vet because they can’t tell us when they are sick. If you’re concerned about taking care of your dog, here are signs to keep in mind that mean they need to see a vet. Their Eating Habits Have Changed Changes in the way your

dog eats are a sign that something may be wrong. If they are suddenly not eating food that they previously loved, it could be a sign that they are having some digestive issues that a veterinarian will need to diagnose. Drinking Too Much or Too Little Suddenly, drinking less water can also be a sign that there are digestive issues that our vet will need to take a look at. However, if your dog suddenly starts drinking

more or urinating more, your veterinarian should check your dog for kidney problems or diabetes, as both can cause increased drinking and urinating. Trouble Breathing or Rapid Breathing Many dogs pant when they get hot, but when they get overheated, their breathing could increase rapidly as they try to cool themselves off. The average temperature of a dog is between 101 and 102.5 degrees, and if you’re afraid your dog is overheating, you should bring them into a cool area and call your vet immediately. Similarly, difficulty breathing could signify that your dog is experiencing a cold or some kind of allergy. Your veterinarian will be able to diagnose the exact prob-

lem so that your pooch can get the treatment they need. Irritated Eyes While it may be irritation from an allergy or something that got into their eye, they could also have a scratch or injury to their cornea which will require a vet to diagnose. Dogs are more than just pets, they are part of the family. Keep these signs in mind so that you can know when your dog needs to see the vet so that you can keep your best friend happy and healthy for years to come. Note: This information is for general awareness only. Always consult with a veterinarian for personalized advice regarding your pet’s health.

pants, wear those instead of denim.

Consider a statement coat: If you’re going to wear the same winter coat every day, it should be something that makes you feel good. Instead of the same old neutrals, you might look for a puffy down jacket or classy wool coat in a bright color.

Invest in wool: Moisturewicking wool keeps you warm and dry all day. If you find wool itchy, consider merino and cashmere. Merino is a lightweight wool that’s great as a base layer: Try a simple merino turtleneck and leggings for the ultimate winter base layer. Cashmere is a soft wool that will keep you cozy. It’s a great option for work-friendly cardigans and comfy beanies.

Treat your hat, gloves, and scarf as accessories: If you wear the same winter coat every day, you can switch things up with a variety of scarves, hats, and gloves. A colorful cashmere beanie can add a spot of color to a dreary winter look. Plus, adding a hat is an easy way to keep your whole body warm.

Avoid cotton: Cotton is an amazing, breathable material, but it holds a lot of water, making it less ideal for winter weather. Save the plaid flannel shirts, corduroy pants, and college sweatshirts for fall and spring. If you have wool

Infertility and myths around food…

I

nfertility is a complex and misunderstood issue that affects millions of couples worldwide. It goes beyond the inability to conceive a child; it can be emotionally traumatic and socially isolating. Beyond physical limitations, infertility can take a toll on mental health, causing stress, anxiety, and depression. Factors such as age, lifestyle choices, and underlying health conditions can significantly impact fertility for both men and women. Women often find themselves bombarded with myths and misinformation surrounding infertility and food, leading to unnecessary panic and stress. One common myth is that eating certain foods can either prevent or cause infertility. This has led to a frantic obsession with fertility diets, with women feeling pressured to adhere to specific eating patterns in hopes of increasing their chances of conceiving. By dispelling these myths and focusing on holistic approaches to reproductive health, women can alleviate unnecessary anxiety about their dietary choices and potential fertility issues.

Myth #1: Eating the core of a pineapple is believed to assist with implantation

Myth #2: If the couple wants twins, they should eat yam Fact: Yam consumption is believed to play a role due to its natural hormone phytoestrogen, which may stimulate multiple ovulations. However, the high twinning rate is influenced by various factors, not just yams. Eating only yams may not boost fertility. Better to consult an expert instead of believing rumors.

Fact: Some claim eating the core of a pineapple right after ovulation can aid in implantation. Pineapple cores contain bromelain, a set of enzymes that acts as a blood thinner and has been found to possess anti-inflammatory properties. Nonetheless, there is no concrete evidence from studies to prove that the bromelain in pineapple cores helps with implantation. Nutrients to enhanced immune health in 2024 Start your new year on a strong note by making a new year resolution to attain better immune health.

W

hether you’re an adult aiming for optimal health or a parent looking to fortify your child’s immunity, incorporating essential nutrients into your daily diet is key. To help you attain better immune health, Dr. Ganesh Kadhe, Director, of Medical and Scientific Affairs, Abbott’s Nutrition Business shares important nutrients and their sources that can keep you strong: Adult Nutrition for Enhanced Immunity Proteins: They serve as the fundamental building blocks for every cell in the body, contributing to the development of vital components such as muscles, bones, hormones, and

antibodies. It plays a crucial role in fortifying the immune system by supporting the production of antibodies and providing essential amino acids as fuel for immune cells. Eggs stand out as an excellent protein source. Yet, a diverse range of foods, including chickpeas, cottage cheese, quinoa, Greek yogurt, peanuts, and almonds, also function as significant contributors to protein intake. Vitamin A: It helps regulate the immune system. Known as the “anti-infective vitamin, this nutrient keeps your skin, mouth, stomach, and lungs healthy so that they can fight infection. It’s also key for sharp vision. Consume it with some

fat for better absorption. Sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots, and spinach are loaded with Vitamin A. Vitamin C: It helps the body build healthy skin and connective tissue, which blocks the entry of foreign microbes. Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant protecting cells from damage. It also helps protect against anemia by helping us absorb more iron from plant foods. Oranges are best known as sources of Vitamin C. However, some foods power-packed with Vitamin C are kiwis, strawberries, broccoli, tomatoes, cauliflower, and red peppers. Vitamin E: It works as an antioxidant, protecting cell membranes from damage due to free radicals. Healthy cell membranes help keep foreign microbes out and support a healthy immune response. Vitamin E is a common nutrient found in most foods. Cooking oils, seeds, and nuts are exceptionally rich sources. Vitamin D: It is a multitasking nutrient that helps to activate immune cells and regulate

their function. Vitamin D helps our bodies absorb calcium and promotes a strong immune system. Few foods are naturally rich in vitamin D3, such as the flesh of fatty fish and fish liver oils, egg yolks, orange juice and cheese. Zinc: It is needed for cellular reproduction, which is important in the synthesis of new immune system cells. Zinc is critical for proper growth and development, especially during childhood and adolescence. Meat, especially red meat is an excellent source of zinc for those who prefer non-vegetarian food. For vegetarians, food like chickpeas, lentils and beans contain a substantial quantity of zinc. Seeds could also be a healthy addition to your diet. Colorful Fruits and Vegetables: Introduce a variety of fruits and vegetables to provide essential vitamins and minerals. Brightly colored produce such as berries, carrots, and leafy greens are not only visually appealing but also rich in nutr Source: IANS

Home remedies to fight hormonal acne W

hat happens inside our bodies is reflected on the outside and hormonal disbalances are one of the most prominent outbreaks that we can see on the skin. Our hormones keep changing and lose their balance due to age, and other factors that cause problems on the outside and one such problem is hormonal acne. Some people experience them during their periods, or pregnancy because those are the times when your body goes through major hormonal changes and hence the acne starts showing up. But how to get rid of this acne? Is there a permanent solution? Here are a few tips: 4 Start with washing your face multiple times because the dirt particles sitting on your face lead to hormonal acne. But if the outer layer of your skin is clean, the chances of getting acne reduces. Use a very mild face wash, and wash it at least 2-3 times a day. 4 Start using Fuller’s Earth (Multani mitti) because it cools your skin. You can find it easily at any departmental store. All you need to do is mix it with some rose water and apply the pack to your face. Apply it 2-3 times a week because it works great on hormonal acne. 4 Always use less moisturizer because your skin must be oily already. And use a gel-based moisturizer with a pea-size application. 4 Use retinol or retinoids, both derived from Vitamin A and great for the skin. It removes dead skin which causes hormonal acne and also increases skin cell turnover. They clean the pores and let the medication penetrate through the skin for better results. 4 Tea Tree is a holy grail product for all sorts of acne. It decreases inflammation on the skin that causes acne. Just take a drop of oil and apply it to the active acne. Don’t use the same finger on every acne to prevent germs transfer. The quantity has to be just one drop because tea tree oil dries the skin too fast and you don’t want that. So, go light on the quantity but use it every day, preferably in the night hours. 4 Always wear sunscreen whenever leaving the house. Your skin needs protection to stay away from more acne. Avoid excessive makeup as it leads to clogging of pores and elevates the chances of acne. Hormonal acne is unavoidable but still controllable. You can use these home remedies and make your skin look better this season! By N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

5 smart tricks to drive away dandruff this winter A dry, itchy scalp is the most common cause of dandruff in the winter. Dandruff can be caused by stress, a change in climate (severe heat or cold), an overabundance of fatty foods, a change in shampoo, excessive sweat, and even pollution. Dandruff flares up when Malassezia, a naturally occurring microorganism on the scalp, is worsened by any of these circumstances.

4 1 in 5 Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime. 4 About 20% of people with a mental disorder have a co-occurring substance use problem. 4 70% of mental health problems have their onset during childhood or adolescence. 4 Men have higher rates of addiction than women, while women have higher rates of mood and anxiety disorders. 4 More than 75% of suicides involve men, but women attempt suicide 3 to 4 times more often. 4 Almost one half (49%) of those who feel they have suffered from depression or anxiety have never gone to see a doctor about this problem. 4 Just 50% of Canadians would tell friends or co-workers that they have a family member with a mental illness, compared to 72% who would discuss a diagnosis of cancer and 68% who would talk about a family member having diabetes. 4 Nearly half of Canadians (46%)

32

think people use the term mental illness as an excuse for bad behavior. 4 While the majority (58%) say they would socialize with a friend who has a mental illness, the proportion who say they would socialize with a friend who has an alcohol (32%) or drug addiction (26%) is significantly lower – suggesting that the stigma of addiction is significantly greater than that associated with mental illness. 4 The economic burden of mental illness in Canada is estimated at $51 billion per year. This includes health care costs, lost productivity, and reductions in healthrelated quality of life. Symptoms Although depression may occur only once during your life, people typically have multiple episodes. During these episodes, symptoms occur most of the day, nearly every day and may include: 4 Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness 4 Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters 4 Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies or sports 4 Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much 4 Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort 4 Reduced appetite and weight loss or increased cravings for food and weight gain 4 Anxiety, agitation or restlessness 4 Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements 4 Feelings of worthlessness

or guilt, fixating on past failures or self-blame 4 Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things 4 Frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide 4 Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches Depression symptoms in children and teens Common signs and symptoms of depression in children and teenagers are similar to those of adults, but there can be some differences. 4 In younger children, symptoms of depression may include sadness, irritability, clinginess, worry, aches and pains, refusing to go to school, or being underweight. 4 In teens, symptoms may include sadness, irritability, feeling negative and worthless, anger, poor performance or poor attendance at school, feeling misunderstood and extremely sensitive, using recreational drugs or alcohol, eating or sleeping too much, self-harm, loss of interest in normal activities, and avoidance of social interaction. Beauty tohacks try in 2024 As we step into 2024, it’s the perfect time to shake up our beauty routines and embrace some innovative hacks that promise to elevate our skincare and makeup game.

F

rom timetested tricks to emerging trends, here are some beauty hacks shared by Dr. Blossom Kochhar, to incorporate into your regimen for a fresh and fabulous start to the year.

Multi-Masking Magic: Upgrade your skincare routine by embracing the power of multimasking. Different areas of your face have different needs, so use targeted masks on specific zones for a customized treatment that addresses various skin concerns simultaneously. The areas under your eyes and neck are susceptible so they need to be dealt with differently.

34

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Skinimalism Trend: Embrace the “skinimalism” trend by focusing on a simplified skincare routine. Streamline your products to the essentials, allowing your skin to breathe and naturally showcase its beauty. Use products that have hyaluronic acid which suits all skin types. Quality over quantity is the key to this minimalist approach. Double Cleansing Routine: Ensure your skin is thoroughly clean by adopting a double cleansing routine. Start with an oilbased cleanser to remove makeup and sunscreen, then follow up with a gentle foaming or cream cleanser to purify the skin. Haircare Overnight

Treatments: Give your hair some extra love with overnight treatments. Apply a nourishing hair mask or oil before bedtime, allowing it to work its magic while you sleep. Wake up to revitalized and hydrated locks. Monochromatic Makeup Looks: Simplify your makeup routine with monochromatic looks. Use a single shade for your eyes, cheeks, and lips to achieve a harmonious and effortlessly chic appearance. This timesaving hack is perfect for those busy mornings. Lip Stain for Natural Flush: Swap out heavy lipsticks for lip stains to achieve a natural flush of color. This lightweight option provides long-lasting pigment without the need for constant touch-ups, making it ideal for everyday wear. By: IANS

In this month’s article, we will delve into spreading awareness of the common situation that occurs with most dog owners. This situation entails the moment your dog engulfs that sweet chocolate bar you were saving for yourself as a snack later.

What to do if your dog eats

chocolate!

D

o not panic! Remain calm. We are here to share some facts and knowledge on how to deal with this issue properly and in an effective manner. Before we dive further into the details of how to address this problem, let’s focus on the facts that cause chocolate to be our dogs’ enemy. Chocolate contains a chemical component, known as theobromine. This chemical is considered to be highly toxic to our furry companions. Comparatively, humans are easily able to process this chemical in our bodies. For dogs, this chemical can affect either the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, or central nervous system. Since there are different types of chocolate available, there are different concentrations of theobromine present. The four most dangerous types of chocolate that are extremely toxic to dogs are cocoa powder, unsweetened chocolate, dark chocolate, and milk chocolate. Comparatively, white chocolate contains less amounts of

theobromine and is not as toxic as the others. In this case, it is estimated that approximately two to three standard chocolate bars are an extremely lethal dose for a small sized dog. In the United States, it is reported that an average of 76 cases involving chocolate poisoning are brought to a veterinarian’s attention each day. If your dog ingests chocolate, common signs you may see are vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, tremors, seizures, increased urination, high or abnormal

heart rate, collapse or even death. Dogs can show these signs up to 6 – 12 hours after consuming chocolate. If you feel your dog is displaying any of the forementioned signs, then please consider it a medical emergency and seek care from your local veterinarian immediately. In the case that your dog has ingested chocolate, there is no cure, but your veterinarian will have other tools to help facilitate the situation. Your veterinarian may induce vomiting to help remove the chocolate from the body, via activated charcoal. Your veterinarian can also choose to give the dog IV fluids to help stabilize the excretion of theobromine from the dog’s body. Please be aware that there is a 24/7 available Pet Poison Helpline, where you can call anytime at 855-764-7661, in case you are not able to reach your local veterinarian.

inger-songwriter Chris Young has been cleared of all charges from his arrest at a bar in Nashville last month. Nashville District Attorney Glenn Funk released a statement last month that read: “Regarding the Chris Young incident – After a review of all the evidence in this case, the Office of the District Attorney has determined that these charges will be dismissed.” The country star, 38, had been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, assaulting an officer, and resisting arrest following an alleged altercation at the DawgHouse Saloon last month, reports People magazine. He was taken into custody and later released on bonds of $250 for the disorderly conduct charge, $1,000 for the resisting arrest charge, and $1,250 for the assault charge. As per People, the arrest occurred after Young and his friends allegedly followed Alcoholic Beverage Commission agents from Tin Roof bar to DawgHouse.

He was then alleged to have “began yelling and screaming,” refusing to follow the directions of an agent speaking to him after the agent pushed him away. The video, obtained by People, showed Young reaching out to the TABC agent, who reacted by shoving the musician, causing him to lose his footing and fall backward over a table and chair. The singer is then seen standing up, putting his hands up, and backing away. By: IANS

‘Fighter’ high on adrenaline but jingoism pulls it down Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, Anil Kapoor, Rishabh Sawhney, Karan Singh Grover, Akshay Oberoi, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Talat Aziz, Ashutosh Rana Director: Siddharth Anand Rating: 2.5 stars The prime aspect that prevents ‘Fighter’ from being a bang on entertainer is excessive jingoism. This drama-in-thesky, part ‘Top Gun’, part ‘Uri’, and part other Siddharth Anand films, has enough wellexecuted action set pieces, filled with several effective flourishes from its lead actors, to have coasted through. Why didn’t the film have enough confidence in its USP: the brave boys, and girls, looping those loops?

work? Don’t know about you, but I’m tired of terrorists with kohled eyes, plotting in makeshift shacks somewhere in Pakistan, snarling and shooting and scooting. Even the new face as the antagonist, Rishabh Sawhney as the Lashkar mastermind Azhar Akhtar, blow-dried long hair reaching the chin, one eye carefully bloodshot, does old things: stomp on brave Indian soldiers, and spout melodramatic dialogues dripping with hate.

India’s most wanted ‘dushman’, as far as Hindi cinema goes, has forever and always been Pakistan. But didn’t we show them what’s what in the 2019 surgical strike, ‘Uri ’? Didn’t an ISI agent curl up and roll over in the director’s own 2021 ‘Pathaan’? I could go on, but you get the point.

Hrithik Roshan reunites with Anand after their ‘War’, this time as Shamsher Pathania, call sign Patty, as an ace fighter pilot — needless to say, he is ‘our best’ — who lays the table and washes up with as much dexterity as he flies his plane. Matching him on eye-candy stakes, is Deepika Padukone as helicopter pilot Minnal Rathore, aka Minni, who is as much an

So the first feeling when you hear pointed references to Pulwama, and a convoy being blown up, and ‘ghar mein ghusna’, is that of ennui. Why can’t Bollywood think of a new enemy? Or is that too much

expert on rescue missions as any man. There is the bonding with the other aviators, chiefly Karan Singh Grover as Sartaj ‘Taj’ Gill, and Akshay Oberoi as Basheer ‘Bash’ Khan. The latter is your token patriotic Indian Muslim; there’s also a Sikh officer who gets the ‘comic relief’ lines before his ‘action scenes’. A Sardar being the butt of jokes? What else? Last year, around the same time, we got from the same director, ‘Pathaan’, a spry spy saga. It was all about reclaiming ground that a long-time hero had to cede; it was also about the declaration that he wasn’t going anywhere. It was a lot of fun because it had the smarts to not take itself seriously. In ‘Fighter’, there’s an uneasy mix of wanting to be real in a plot awash with mainstream cliches: when the camera

lingers for a moment too long on a pilot, you know he’s in for the chop. You know which one will be sacrificed; you know who will come home. You know a pair of reluctant parents will become aware of their ‘mistake’, and more tears will be shed. After a point, everything feels like a stretch: Minni’s line about ‘men and women being equal in the sky’ makes you want to cheer, but not when it comes around again. This is one of those films that you wish that the desire to get the easy claps, with dialogues like ‘baap kaun hai’, and ‘har gali will become Indian Occupied Pakistan’, could have been kept at bay. A lot of effort has gone into keeping the proceedings at Air Force stations authentic, and there’s a great aerial sequence in the second half — I loved the snow whooshing off a row of fir trees — which can compare with the best of the ‘Top Gun’ flicks. Hrithik and Deepika make a great pair; Anil Kapoor, as fit as the hero, provides able support. Succumbing to the current atmosphere of hypernationalism leads to bombast, which in turn weakens a film. Baaps don’t go around declaring who they are. They just know.

Kevin Jonas calls Nick ‘Jiju’ for Indian crowd at Lollapalooza music festival T he American pop rock band Jonas Brothers took to the stage for the first time in India as they performed at the second edition of the multi-genre music festival, ‘Lollapalooza India’ in Mumbai.

One standout moment from the gig was Nick’s elder brother Kevin calling him ‘Jiju’ implying that Mumbai is home to him and the three brothers as Nick is married to actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Kevin called Nick, ‘Jiju’ prior to performing the song ‘Waffle House’ from their studio album. The organizers made a few changes this time with regards to the stage. The Lollapalooza India main stage this time had a ramp spreading all the way to

the pit unlike its predecessor.

Prior to the set, the organizers played ‘Galla Goodiyaan’ from the 2015 film ‘Dil Dhadakane Do’ which starred Nick’s wife Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

While Nick owned the stage with his vocals, he also shredded on stage as he joined forces with his brother on the lead guitar. The energy of the performers and the crowd was over the roof. The wind section was killing it right at the front of the stage with trombone, trumpet and soprano saxophone. They played the song ‘Play My Music’ from the film ‘Camprock’. Nick said, “As a family we have

a deep connection with this beautiful country. I’ve been waiting to be in India for a long long time”, before he pulled off a Vin Diesel as he said, “We

consider every single one of you here tonight as family”. Source: IANS

idyllic paradise is now more accessible than ever, beckoning travelers to explore its wonders. Let’s delve into why Lakshadweep should be your next travel destination, and how recent developments, coupled with better

connectivity, have made this hidden gem easier to access. Unrivaled Beauty: Imagine yourself on pristine beaches, the gentle waves caressing the shore, vibrant coral reefs teeming with life, and coconut palms swaying in the

salty breeze. Lakshadweep offers all this and more, untouched by the hustle of mass tourism. Dive into the crystal-clear waters to swim with dolphins, kayak through mangroves, or simply relax on the tranquil shores – nature’s symphony awaits your presence. Cultural Marvel: Beyond the breathtaking beaches, Lakshadweep boasts a vibrant culture woven with ancient traditions and warm hospitality. Experience the graceful movements of the Maldivian folk dance, savor the delectable flavors of locally spiced fresh seafood, and discover unique fishing techniques passed down

through generations. Easier Access: Forget about the days of limited travel options. Today, direct flights from India effortlessly transport you to Agatti or Bangaram islands, the gateways to Lakshadweep. Ferry services provide a scenic journey connecting the islands, while private yachts and chartered boats cater to luxury travelers seeking a bespoke experience. Network Connectivity: While basic 2G/3G services are available on some islands, high-speed internet access has always been limited. Recently, Indian telecom giant Airtel became the

first 5G network provider to the Union territory. Most of Lakshadweep islands have been receiving 4G work since 2019 but now the tourists visiting the remote islands like Agatti & Kavaratti can continue using high-speed 5G network on their devices for seamless connectivity on the go. Digital Detox, Natural Reconnection: Although network connectivity is gradually improving, Lakshadweep’s charm lies in its digital detox. Leave behind constant pings and notifications and reconnect with yourself amidst the breathtaking beauty. Embrace the silence, the starlit nights, and the rhythm of the ocean – a digital cleanse for the soul. Planning Your Paradise Getaway: Lakshadweep requires permits for Indian tourists, easily obtainable online. Choose from government-run beach resorts, private eco-friendly havens, or homestays for an authentic experience. Mind the local dress code and cultural sensitivities to ensure a harmonious visit.
