THE VIRTUAL GLAMOUR OF

THE 15TH BRIAN JESSEL BMW CABRIOLET CHARITY GALA

S

triving to establish and improve the early detection of pancreatic cancer, the Brian Jessel BMW Cabriolet Gala commemorates this pioneering field’s resolution and commitment to research, community activation and advocacy. Being Vancouver’s signature charity event, the Cabriolet Gala has since 2004, raised over $2M in support of pancreatic cancer and other worthwhile charities. Mr. Jessel’s undertaking to pancreatic cancer research and funding became his only charity of choice, after Bernie Jessel, Brian’s father, passed from the disease in 2010. Through the funding and assistance of our sponsor’s caring passion and creative teamwork, the Cabriolet Gala has accomplished its mission of raising awareness and aiding families over the years. Brian Jessel, President, Jim Murray, Managing Director of Brian Jessel BMW, their team, and the volunteer committee have again led through their example and innovative program. challenge and the cancellation of the Gala encouraged the company into going the extra mile, thoroughly approaching the event from a virtual perspective. Despite this year’s unforeseeable yet remarkable transformation of our understanding and take on compassion and unity, the 2020’s Gala successfully raised $130,000 in support of pancreatic cancer while effectively adhering to current public health responsibilities. By continuing to provide this annual fundraiser, the Cabriolet Gala consolidates their collective vision and determination to keep fighting the fight against pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic Cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths, with a five-year survival rate, and less than 2% of government cancer funding. There is no means to detect it, and no known treatment to make a difference quick enough. Join us in continuing to advance the investigation and discovery of better treatment for patients worldwide, and significantly strengthening the reach of education, medicine, and most importantly, kindness and hope.

With home sheltering for months on end during the lockdown, many of us have quite simply got sick of the sloppy dressing and carefree hair and makeup routine. If you can afford to, continue to stay at home despite the Unlock, because the pandemic ain’t going away in a rush, but step up to the plate and take care of your locks.

Salon style hair at home W

e spoke to expert is Shilpa Joshi Halder, Hair Color & Care Development Manager South Asia for L’Oreal Paris for some do it yourself hair care tips with the help of an oil based serum so you can have shiny hair in an instant.

Effortless Styled Hair at Home With staying indoors, we all are on a lookout for chic updos for our zoom calls. You can try a sleek wrapped ponytail which is perfect for your office calls as well as your zoom parties. To accomplish this look, untangle your hair with the help of the serum, take a couple of drops and apply it the whole way across the length of your hair. Put your hair in a tight pony; take a strand

from the ponytail and fold it around the hair and then tie it with a rubber band. Set up those strands of the baby hair with a tiny bit of the hair serum, and voilà you’re ready!

Add a finishing touch If you have dry hair troubles and leave-in conditioners aren’t doing the job, an instant shine and smoothing serum is your BFF. Smoothing serums are also one of the most effective ways to manage your hair in humid climates. My recommendation is to go for a serum as it helps give an instant nourish to dry and frizzy hair. Take 3-4 drops of serum on the palm of your hand and rub it well to make it warm. Now, start applying serum to the back of your hair first and then come to the front and midsection of the hair so your hairstyle

stays intact.

Before a blow dry Before attempting a blow dry at home, it’s a good idea to pre-treat your hair with heat-protecting serum. Depending on your hair length take two to five drops of the serum in your palm and rub it well. If you have fine hair and wonder why it always struggles to hold a blow dry, I recommend using any serum which is enriched with a blend of natural oils. Such serums are specially curated for hair of all textures and are the perfect choice for a styling aid. The usage transforms the hair texture from the very first use, delivering extraordinary nourishment and protects the hair from heat as well. Source: IANS

Back Clinic Spinal Decompression Therapy in Vancouver & Surrey

Krishna Jeeja

(CEO MJ Physio)

What is Spinal Decompression Therapy? Spinal Decompression Therapy involves stretching the spine, using a traction table with the goal of relieving back pain and/or leg pain. At MJ Physio we own a robust decompression/traction table for spinal decompression therapy in Fleetwood, Surrey & Vancouver. The friction-free traction platform maximizes patient comfort and treatment outcomes. The angle of pull can be adjusted to selectively direct the decompression/traction force to where it is needed most.

Spinal traction stretches the spine to take pressure off compressed discs. This straightens the spine and eases the muscle. The theory is that this process creates a negative intradiscal pressure which is thought to have two potential benefits of a) Pulling the herniated disc material back into the disc and Promoting the passage of healing nutrients, into the disc. Indications for Decompression traction include:

Indications: 4Sciatica 4 Herniated (degenerative disc disease) 4Bulging disc 4Diseased spinal nerve roots 4Muscle spasm at the neck and low back

Five screen-free ways to consume content This year has been a rollercoaster ride and has seen most of us adapting to the “new normal”. Remote working has become the order of the day, and people are spending longer periods of time in front of a screen, be it for work or entertainment.

D

ue to this, screen fatigue has become a real concern, with experts suggesting that it is beginning to impact people’s health. In a recent report, a doctor practicing telemedicine said there was a 30 per cent increase in complaints of eye strain, dry or itchy eyes, headaches, blurred vision and physical and mental fatigue. The challenge is to able to learn some-

thing new, pursue a hobby and keep yourself entertained without straining yourself on a screen. Here are five ways to keep yourself occupied and productive, without being glued to your screens:

Marie Kondo your personal space Cleaning always comes across as a chore and we neglect it until that one chair can

no longer bear the weight of the pile of clothes. A fun way to look at cleaning is decluttering and redecorating. Choose one room at a time, pick up things that don’t bring you joy and throw them into a giveaway pile. Pick out reusable items like empty water bottles, plastic boxes, worn-out clothes, shoe boxes, tin cans, light bulbs with which you can make DIY decorations. Not only will you be proud of your own creations, your home just got a whole lot prettier at no cost at all.

Hands busy, mind free It is an established fact that listening to audiobooks is more emotionally engaging than watching TV or films. Whether you are looking for stories or simply want to experience some downtime, Audible and Audible Suno are the right places for you. Unleashing the power of the spoken word, these platforms offer an extensive library of audio books and audio series narrated by talented and celebrated personalities that are sure to inspire creativity.

Get active, get going The lockdown has everyone stuck at home, which has led to the discovery of innovative ways to keep ourselves healthy and active. Whoever thought that working out with basic household items at home can give you a full-fledged gym experience? Here are few ideas to make your home workout more fun and efficient:

10

OCTOBER 2020

4 Use cans and jars as small weights 4 Use stairs as a cardio machine 4 Use a bag of flour or rice as heavy weights 4A part from these, you can do yoga, stretching, crossfit (workouts using bodyweight), all from the comfort of your home.

Grow your plants, grow your soul To be closer to nature is to be closer with your inner self. Indoor plants don’t just look good, they make you feel good mentally and physically, too. Growing and taking care of plants is a worthwhile hobby for anyone who is wondering what to do to keep oneself occupied. It is a simple activity that decorates your house and gives you unadulterated joy in an environmentally-friendly way. Get creative while making your space greener -- think the kitchen slab, your window sill, the balcony, or even your bathroom where bamboo plants can be kept.

Awaken your inner Picasso One needn’t be a trained artist to create art. All you need is a canvas, paint, a few brushes, some free time and your imagination. There are no rules when it comes to painting to unwind yourself. It has been said that painting has therapeutic qualities and with no prior training, you can just let the brushes play with the colours. You never know -- you may just end up with something frame-worthy that brings you happiness and serenity. By: Siddhi Jain

CELEBRATE LIFE INSURANCE AWARENESS MONTH – PROTECT YOUR MORTGAGE WITH INSURANCE in case of any foreseeable circumstance. It may not be applicable if you do not have any dependents who would need to keep your home in such circumstances. Sandeep Ahuja

As an independent insurance advisor working through Punjab Insurance Agency, I deal with different insurance companies offering plans for different types of insurance. I can explain to you in detail, the insurance plan options and coverage that are suitable for your needs and resources. Besides, I can also help you to purchase mortgage insurance, super visa insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, extended medical plans, group medical plans, RESP, RRSP, travel insurance, TFSA accounts, health and dental plans along with estate planning suitable for your needs and resources.

Continue from last edition Portability of the policy

The insurance policy we offer you is portable and remains unaffected in case you relocate. But this portability is not provided by the financial institution. If you change your lender, the policy is cancelled.

Coverage stability

The coverage provided by mortgage insurance doesn’t decline unless you request. Even if you request for a decline in coverage, your premium decreases at a proportional rate. But in case of financial institution, the coverage amount is equal to the mortgage amount. With the gradual decrease of mortgage amount, coverage also decreases leading to a drastic reduction of your benefits, while your premium amount remains the same.

Retention of coverage

Insurance company allows you to retain your coverage after you pay off your mortgage. On the other hand, coverage obtained in insurance through financial institution terminates after you pay off your mortgage.

Protection against the effect of renewal

If you purchase mortgage insurance through us; once your policy is approved, you don’t have to face the hassle of renewing it as insurance can be done for a term of 10 years/15 years/20 years/30 years. But again, if you have done it through a bank, after a period of five years, the policy terminates and you have to renew it again, meaning thereby you will need to re-qualify and may eventually end up paying higher premiums. The above comparison makes it evident that buying mortgage insurance through a life insurance company is in every way more beneficial than buying it through financial institutions. However, due to lack of awareness, majority of people still find it convenient to buy it www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Covid-19 is here to stay, at least for a while. The work environment has changed, temporarily for many and permanently for few. Many things may never go back to the old ‘normal’ and it looks like working from home all the time is going to be one such thing. Remote working is all set to become the new norm. Offices will assume a new role of providing a base to connect with the rest of the team members, occasionally, to renew relationships and build new ones.

Remote work hacks: Should you assume or ask?

‘Remote Oriented’ Work - What will you lose? Even with the shift to remote working, the volatility in business continues, more than ever before. Therefore, most of the roles require you to learn new things every day to cope up with ever changing demands. And if you need to grow in your career, you will need to do much more than that. You need to excel at your work but also expand your scope by seeking new knowledge, new experiences, new insights, and new networks. When you were in office, and a new requirement came in, you could potentially get a chance to contribute. When a skill was required; you could potentially ask for help; when a doubt came up, you could seek some clarifications. The times you were going in a wrong direction, someone will spot you and help you course correct. It was alright to make some assumptions and start as soon as possible, while you knew that you have some help at hand. It was still okay to wait for opportunities to come and take your chances at them. With remote work, all this has become less plausible.

It is OK to ask To ask is to be human. As children we were relatively free with our queries; we asked a lot of questions but as we grew up, we became self-conscious. Asking in formal set-up became more complicated. To keep things simple, we started making a lot of assumptions, especially assumptions that were known only to us. This became a way of life and we started expanding the sphere of assumptions. The advantages of being in office and being surrounded with colleagues, who could help, is no longer there. The problem with assumptions is that now we may realise too late that we were wrong. The problem of waiting for things to happen to us, is that we may be waiting forever. So, take that bold step and ‘ask’ upfront: Clarify your doubts, ask for the help you need, seek opportunities for growth, and finally, seek time to ask for validation of direction that you are taking up. Remember, assumptions can have an impact on your career and organisation, so asking at the right time is an important skill to acquire. By: Siddhi Jain

Is your beard really baby friendly?

W

hile the world has been busy adjusting to the ‘new normal’ thanks to the pandemic, a few people have been blessed and celebrate the biggest highlights of their life at home. Many couples celebrated an engagement while other got hitched during the coronavirus. Some are revelling in the joys of parenthood as they welcome a new addition to their family. Once you become a dad, a lot of your life’s choices are dictated by your baby. For instance, you start seeing the world from a different perspective, by prioritising your baby over yourself. Upgrading or even creating an additional living space for your child. Along with your change in lifestyle, you also need to update your looks. Is if your beard really baby friendly? Mumbai-based celebrity stylist and Gillette Grooming expert, Aalim Hakim, says keep it simple, short, and soft to avoid any pain when your baby pulls your beard or causing micro abrasions from cuddles. It is important that your look is baby friendly. Father to two sons, Aalim has played a key role in styling and guiding the new dads and expectant fathers on how they must maintain their beard including the likes of Hardik Pandya, Sumeet Vyas and

Suresh Raina, who have all had to alter their looks to suit their new-borns. Aalim says, the easiest and the least time consuming is to go clean-shaven, since you can then feel your toddlers’ hands on your cheek, it is an unmissable experience. But if that is too much to ask, then men can look at maintaining a light stubble or a simple moustache. The celebrity stylist shares some secret hacks to get your beard right for the baby. To begin with, gather all your tools; pick up a good razor - depending on your skin and beard type. Along with this you will also need a comb, scissors, aftershave gel to get the desired style:

1. CLEAN SHAVE While everyone might not like to be clean shaven, it is one of the most recommend method of maintaining personal hygiene and getting rid of dead skin. This look is considered to be a confident and trustworthy look, because your beard can alter your face- structure. This look is an honest and open book. If you have good face structure like a sharp jawline and great facial features, why not flaunt it instead of covering up under facial hair.

The benefits of a clean shave are: 4 It keeps your child safe from bacteria residing in your beard 4 It can help remove dead skin cells (often the cause of acne and bad skin) 4It often makes you appear younger 4It will compliment a formal appearance

2. ANCHOR BEARD Use a scissor and comb to even out your beard hair length. Wash your face with hot water or apply a hot towel on your beard as it will help soften the facial hair as well as open the pores. Apply a shaving gel or foam and massage it in a circular motion all over the face and neck area to condition the skin for a smooth shave. To achieve this look, the soul patch and goatee at the chin will be connected to create an anchor shape. The corner of the anchor will be hugging the jaw line of the face keeping the length and shape as required. You can keep your moustache in a pencil shape, or a pyramid shape disconnected with your anchor beard. Shave with a light and gentle pressure to give yourself a close shave. After the complete process wash your face with cold water and apply after shave lotion or balm as it is the best possible way to close your pores, soothe the skin and smell nice

The benefits of an anchor beard are: 4 Keeps your cheeks clean, giving your baby room to feel your face 4 Gives you a sleek, sharp and confident look 4 It will compliment your formal appearance, if done regularly

3.BALBO BEARD Balbo beard is one of those styles that is a combination of both, the moustache and a goatee. This style is unique in its own way since the moustache and the goatee are not connected. The goatee is created in the shape of the letter ‘T’ where the letter

14

OCTOBER 2020

is inverted. Using your scissor and comb, reduce the density of the beard around your cheeks and disconnect your moustache with your goatee. Give yourself a clean shave with the best razor on the cheeks start shaping your goatee as an inverted T below your lower lip. It can be as thick/thin as you like. Create a straight line while you move your strokes downwards from the top. Ensure your strokes are extremely sharp & strong.

The benefits of a balbo beard are: 4 Keeps your cheeks clean, giving your baby room to feel your face 4 It avoids areas that commonly experience patchiness 4 It’s an easy style to pull off and one that transitions seamlessly from day to night 4 A great go-to look for men of all face shapes

4. HANDLEBAR MOUSTACHE Using your scissor and comb, bring down your overall moustache length to about 1/5 of an inch. Keeping it longer at the edges around your mouth. Start defining the shape of your handlebar moustache by following your lip line to the corner of your mouth and trimming in a downward direction, create clean edges and tidy up any stray hair around your handlebar moustache. Create a neat parting with rounded edges in the middle of your handlebar moustache. Give yourself a clean shave with the best razor on the cheeks, chin and neck, taking extra care around your moustache. Comb and re-shape the ends of your moustache by twisting the edges around your fingers into a curl you like.

The benefits of a handlebar moustache are: 4Keeps most of your face clean 4 Square and wide faces are typically better suited for them By N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

KidsPlay organises Summer Camp 2020

O

rganized sports are being used throughout the world as a dynamic mechanism of engaging youth of all races, genders, and classes. Organized sports programs are not the end all solution to youth crime, however, they can contribute to reducing youth crime by giving young people a positive identity of empowerment and by helping youth acquire leadership, teamwork and selfgovernance skills under adult supervision. Although there is limited evidence of a direct causal relationship between youth sport and youth crime reduction, there are several rationales as to why youth sport reduces youth crime, keeps young people busy and out of trouble, meets a need that youth have for excitement, makes young people feel empowered,

16

OCTOBER 2020

fosters teamwork, and develops self-esteem. It is on account of these above-mentioned factors that their team has been running various sports programs on their own time for the last five years. The bedrock and fundamental principle of all these programs is to establish a rapport with disadvantaged youth through the medium of sports. These initiatives provide the youth an opportunity to play in an organized sports tournament with the end goals being building a bridge between these youth and adults in a constructive manner and providing the youth an opportunity to learn and develop sportsmanship, teamwork and leadership skills. KidsPlay Summer Camp 2020 was a huge success. This was a great opportunity to learn about a vast variety of

sports featuring experienced coaches representing their respective sports. All the kids who participated showed great amounts of respect, discipline and excitement as they ran the camp during unforsaken times. The KidsPlay Summer Camp was an absolutely amazing experience for participants and volunteers alike. The competence and passion displayed by their volunteers, combined with the unfettered enthusiasm of the youth participating in the camp, further bolsters their efforts to provide similar resources and support in the future. “We would like to thank the children and their parents for participating in our camp as we hope to host many more events such as this in the near future.

9 ways to build resilience and tackle mental health problems Covid-19 has triggered a global financial crisis and due to strict adoption of lockdown measures, the magnitude of poor mental health is increasing across the world. The ‘New Normal’ hopes to bring a positive outcome, but the fear of contracting the virus is making it difficult for people to live through these times.

A

ll we need is to do is go back to basics and work on maintaining mental health by sculpting resilience on a daily basis. Resilience is a healthy pathway to cope with stress, fear and anxiety. It will make you, the people you care about and the community stronger. The bounce-back-ability is a kind of “miracle drug” personality trait, something that can heal all wounds and right all wrongs. It is a wonderful trait to have as it is related to a plethora of positive outcomes, and “perhaps most important of all” it can be improved.

essential elements:

Resilient outcome doesn’t come about as a result of something particularly earth shattering, it’s just everyday stuff, like getting a teacher to give a bit more attention to a particularly weak or disadvantaged student.

Analysing situations -- Resilient people are very good at analysing any negative situation and turn the situation into a positive phenomenon.

According to the research, resilience contains 5

Knowing your inner self - Your inner self is who you really are on the inside, to know your purpose, values, vision, goals, motivations, and beliefs. Your inner self is who you really are on the inside. Challenge - Resilient people encompass an adverse situation as a challenge and not as a paralysing phenomenon. They look at their failures and mistakes as lessons to be learned from, and as opportunities for growth in future. They don’t view themselves as a negative reflection on their abilities or self-worth.

Commitment - Resilient people possess a strong sense of commitment, they are committed to their lives and their goals. Commitment isn’t just restricted to their

work - it’s to their relationships, their friendships etc. Self control - People with resilience, focuses only on self-regulation and selfcontrol. They like to invest their time and energy focusing on situations and events that they have control over. They put their time and effort where they can have the most impact, they feel empowered and confident in.

Here are nine ways to build resilience: Cognitive Restructuring - Do you often find yourself “stuck in your own head,” caught in endless spirals of negative thinking? Try cognitive restructuring! It is a simple but powerful technique for identifying and undoing negative thinking patterns like worry and rumination. When thought patterns become destructive and self-defeating, it’s a good idea to explore ways to interrupt and redirect them. That’s what cognitive restructuring can do. Sleep is vital - Sleep is a vital component of every person’s overall health and well-being, often neglected. It reinvigorates the body and prepares it for another day. Getting adequate rest may also help prevent excess weight gain, heart disease, and increased illness duration. Poor sleep is linked to physical problems such as a weakened immune system and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Maintain perspective - Resilient people are well-versed with the fact that although a situation or crisis may seem overwhelming in the moment, it may not make that much of an impact over the long-term. Remind yourself of your priorities. Doing the “things that matter most” is all well and good but it requires actually knowing what your priorities are.

thoughts destroy their efforts. Instead they consistently work upon restructuring a positive mindset.

Empathetic and compassionate Resilient people don’t think of themselves as a victim. They don’t waste time worrying what others think of them. They maintain healthy relationships, but don’t bow to peer pressure. Balanced diet - A recent study found that a balanced diet (a diet high in vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, beans, cereals, grains, fish, and unsaturated fats such as olive oil.) supplemented with fish oil led to a reduction in depression among patients. To boost your mental health, focus on eating

plenty of fruits and vegetables along with foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon. Dark green leafy vegetables in particular are brain protective. Nuts, seeds and legumes, such as beans and lentils, are also excellent brain foods. Spirituality - Spiritual resilience comes by cultivating gratitude and counting your blessings. Be thankful for what you do have rather than focusing on what you’re missing. Build optimism and be positive, accept the past and focus on the future. By Dr. Payal Sharma Kamath

“Indoor vs Outdoor Cats”

W

hich cat lives the better life? An indoor cat, who stays safely inside your home and lives an introvert lifestyle; or the outdoor cat, who ventures out into the unknown and has a secret social life? Cat owners love to debate on this arguable question, in which both sides have validating points to convince their theories. In this month’s article, we felt we’d lay out the pros and cons of having an indoor cat vs an outdoor cat. We will cover the struggles that both type of cats may experience and what can be done to assist them with better living standards. It is known that indoor cats do show a tendency of having longer lifespans than outdoors cats. Statistically, indoor cats are recorded to live a mean average of 17 years of life; whereas, outdoor cats usually range from 2 – 5 years of age. This is because there are more potential dangers available outside than there are inside your home. Outdoors, cats can easily become targets of vehicles, bad weather conditions, animal cruelty, climbing trees, toxins, poisonous plants and predators (loose dogs and wild animals). They can also encounter unfamiliar cats, as well, who can expose them to feline viruses, parasites or lesions from feral cat fights. According to statistics, it is seen that more often an outdoor cat will need to visit a

20

OCTOBER 2020

veterinarian frequently than an indoor cat. Comparatively, indoor cats also have their own concerning apprehensions as well. Indoor cats that live in multiple-cat households are also exposed to certain feline viruses, such as FIV (Feline Im-

munodeficiency Virus). Therefore, it is important to vaccinate both your indoor and outdoor cats, in order to prevent them from being affected by such harmful conditions. Multiple-cat households can also cause felines to experience certain stress-related disorders from overcrowding. This is supported by the natural behavior of cats to be classified as solitary, independent animals. If a cat is experiencing a stress-related disorder, it may exhibit signs of aggressiveness, depression, anxiety, avoiding the litter box, self-injury, eating disorders, attention seeking, scratching and even withdrawal. More severe cases may also include diarrhoea, vomiting, excessive grooming of the coat that becomes patchy, runny eyes and runny nose. If staying indoors mostly, an immense challenge that these cats can face is lack of environmental enrichment. This means that there is not enough enrichment at home that allows them to mentally grow and stay occupied. The boredom can cause many behavioral changes overtime and discomfort to indoor cats. Ways to enrich your environment at home for your indoor cat are: usage of food puzzles (interactive toys or food balls); hiding food in different places in your home (in corners, behind furniture, on high shelves), which allows for a hunting or game like manner environment for food; provide access to high, climbing places within the household; provide access to windows for opportunity to be exposed to different mental and visual stimulations; company of other cats; allow scratching (scratch posts, cardboard); provide a properly shaped and reasonably sized litter box with appropriate litter; designate certain areas of the house where the cat can easily have access to and be alone, away from other animals within the household. Failure in providing good environmental enrichment can result in the development of psychological

problems, as mentioned above. The outdoors provides very efficient enrichment towards the development of a cat. It is the innate nature of a cat to be inclined to hunt for its food and to play with stimuli in the outdoors. Bugs provide great enrichment outside in being chased and eaten by cats! Their inherent predator behavior allows for them to develop more sharp skills and knowledge of their own mannerisms. Positive enrichment in the outdoors also permits cats to be more adaptable to stressful situations. There are studies in which it is seen that outdoor cats can appear to be braver in situations that indoor cats are also placed in. The constant stimuli experienced outside enables them to become more psychologically balanced. This occurs because they are persistently challenged with obstacles and riddles many times in a day while not being home. Similarly, as we say for children, as they grow, the more experiences they live through; the more knowledge they gain. Indoor cats are also known to experience less exercise than outdoor cats. Therefore, it is important to monitor the nutrition and body condition of indoor cats, in order to avoid obesity. Both scenarios of a cat being limited to indoors or outdoors has its own advantages and disadvantages. While being outdoors can provide good enrichment and promotion of inherent hunting skills; indoors can provide safety and a long prosperous life span comparatively. It is however important to keep in mind the concerning points of both situations and to consequently take any measures needed in order to prevent future harm to your cat’s physical and mental state.

All you need to know about the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji

I

MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

rritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine.

Signs and symptoms include cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhoea or constipation, or both. IBS is a chronic condition that needs patience & persistence. Only a small number of people with IBS have severe signs and symptoms. Some people can control their symptoms by managing diet, lifestyle and stress. Moresevere symptoms can be treated with medication and counselling. Symptoms The signs and symptoms of IBS vary. The most common include: Abdominal pain, cramping or bloating that is typically relieved or partially relieved by passing a bowel movement. Excess gas Diarrhoea or constipation — sometimes alternating bouts of diarrhoea and constipation. Mucus in the stool Most people with IBS experience times when the signs and symptoms are worse and times when they improve or even disappear completely. When to see a doctor See your doctor if you have a persistent change in bowel habits or other signs or symptoms of IBS. They may indicate a more serious condition, such as colon cancer. More-serious signs and symptoms include: 4Weight loss 4Diarrhoea at night 4Rectal bleeding 4 Iron deficiency anemia 4Unexplained vomiting 4Difficulty swallowing 4 Persistent pain that isn’t relieved by passing gas or a bowel movement Causes The precise cause of IBS isn’t known. Factors that appear to play a role include:

22

OCTOBER 2020

4Muscle contractions in the intestine: The walls of the intestines are lined with layers of muscle that contract as they move food through your digestive tract. Contractions that are stronger and last longer than normal can cause gas, bloating and diarrhoea. Weak intestinal contractions can slow food passage and lead to hard, dry stools. 4Nervous system: Abnormalities in the nerves in your digestive system may cause you to experience greater than normal discomfort when your abdomen stretches from gas or stool. Poorly coordinated signals between the brain and the intestines can cause your body to overreact to changes that normally occur in the digestive process, resulting in pain, diarrhoea or constipation. 4Inflammation in the intestines: Some people with IBS have an increased number of immune-system cells in their intestines. This immunesystem response is associated with pain and diarrhoea. 4Severe infection: IBS can develop after a severe bout of diarrhoea (gastroenteritis) caused by bacteria or a virus. IBS might also be associated with a surplus of bacteria in the intestines (bacterial overgrowth).

4 Changes in bacteria in the gut (microflora): Microflora are the “good” bacteria that reside in the intestines and play a key role in health. Research indicates that microflora in people with IBS might differ from microflora in healthy people. Triggers Symptoms of IBS can be triggered by: 4Food - The role of food allergy or intolerance in IBS isn’t fully understood. A true food allergy rarely causes IBS. But many people have worse IBS symptoms when they eat or drink certain foods or beverages, including wheat, dairy products, citrus fruits, beans, cabbage, milk and carbonated drinks. 4Stress - Most people with IBS experience worse or more frequent signs and symptoms during periods of increased stress. But while stress may aggravate symptoms, it doesn’t cause them. 4Hormones - Women are twice as likely to have IBS, which might indicate that hormonal changes play a role. Many women find that signs and symptoms are worse during or around their menstrual periods. Complications

Chronic constipation or diarrhoea can cause hemorrhoids. In addition, IBS is associated with: 4Poor quality of life - Many people with moderate to severe IBS report poor quality of life. Research indicates that people with IBS miss three times as many days from work as do those without bowel symptoms. 4Mood disorders - Experiencing the signs and symptoms of IBS can lead to depression or anxiety. Depression and anxiety also can make IBS worse. Diagnosis There’s no test to definitively diagnose IBS. Your doctor is likely to start with a complete medical history, physical exam and tests to rule out other conditions. If you have IBS with diarrhoea, you likely will be tested for gluten intolerance (celiac disease). After other conditions have been ruled out, your doctor is likely to use one of these sets of diagnostic criteria for IBS: Your doctor may recommend several tests, including stool studies to check for infection or problems with your intestine’s ability to take in the nutrients from food (malabsorption). You may also have a number of other tests to rule out other causes for your symptoms. Cont. in next issue www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Prepping children to help during a medical emergency It seems like one cannot get through a day without receiving messages or watching the news reports of an untoward situation evolving a medical emergency. For parents, their child’s health and safety is the number one priority and they are often worried about emergencies their child could face.

A

suggests that children above 14 yrs can be taught effective CPR and generate enough force to do cardiac massage on an adult in an emergency situation.

little training and understanding of emergency situations will help minimize the impact of an emergency on the entire family, whether at home or outdoors. Training and equipping children with appropriate first aid knowledge certainly comes in handy, so they are prepared irrespective of the presence of an adult. The first step is to prepare a family communication plan for any sort of emergency that parents and kids can tackle together and separately. Second is to prep your kids, and yourself to be prepared for an emergency in a way that it is easy to tackle the crisis when it occurs. Dr Gurudutt Bhat, Consultant Paediatrician, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan lists down what your emergency preparedness plan should look like: BEING ALERT: It is common to be easily distracted, one could walk right into a hazardous situation. First and foremost, it is important to limit the time we spend on our phones and be cognizant of our surroundings. Teach your kids to be alert of the people and situations around them; if they hear

or see any unfamiliar sounds or occurrences to make note and inform a family member. KNOWLEDGE OF FIRST AID KIT: Although some children may not be old enough to know how to use a First-Aid Kit, they can still be taught essential skills for when emergencies do happen. Show them where the First-Aid Kit is kept in your home. Give details of each item and purpose; have your children handle the items and use them in a demonstration, creating made-up scenarios that might warrant the used

of the supplies stored in the kit CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) TRAINING: It is never too late to learn lifesaving techniques such as CPR, and training your young ones could help save a loved one. Speak to them about how CPR can help someone and when to use it. You can use different props such as a balloon to make the training fun. Acting out potential emergency scenarios and challenging kids to problem-solve their way through them will make sure they can carry out the training when the time comes. Most of the studies

EMERGENCY CONTACT NUMBERS: While you hope your child never has to deal with an emergency medical situation, it’s important they know what to do in case they ever find themselves facing one. Talk to them about it and define what a medical emergency is. Explain to them that these are not things that happen on a daily basis and that they rarely happen at all, but that they need to know what to do in case something like one of the scenarios happens. Make them memorize a few emergency numbers/ write it down for them and teach them how to dial a phone. These are some measures which will go a long way to keep kids and adults safe in today’s chaotic world. Try not to over-prepare your child and always teach them to be hyper-vigilant. This way they will learn what they need to do if a real emergency arises and navigate it themselves, with little or no support from the adults. By Puja Gupta

All you need to know about PCOS

A

ccording to experts, one in five women can suffer from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS, which means, there may be several women around you at the risk of problems ranging from menstrual irregularities to complications in pregnancy. Gynaecologists stress on the importance of a healthy diet, exercise, and maintaining optimum weight to battle the condition. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a hormonal disorder in reproductive-age women. It is a common in women with infertility problems. “Women suffer from PCOS due to excessive androgen production which is a male like hormone and inefficiency of insulin hormone to process sugars. This gets triggered by stress, sedentary lifestyle and excessive carbohydrate and trans fats based diets, and indiscriminate

24

OCTOBER 2020

use of hormones. It can be heredity and is more prevalent in Asian ethnicity. The ovaries produce abnormally high levels of androgen, causing hirsutism and acne. Women having PCOS may suffer from diabetes, heart, and blood vessel problems. Irregular menses and having polycystic ovaries can be the signs of it. “Add fiber to your diet to lower the insulin levels and enhance the health of your gut. Eat seeds, berries, legumes, flax seeds, and whole grains. Opt for grilled chicken, salmon, fish, beans, tofu, shrimp, and tuna. Try avocado, quinoa, brown rice, kale, and spinach. Women with PCOS are at a higher risk of type-2 diabetes. A low-GI diet can help in weight loss and improve insulin sensitivity. Eat nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, and low-carbohydrate foods. Avoid sweets, processed foods, saturated and trans fats. Your doctor may prescribe medication to

reduce acne or hair growth and help you with PCOS,” said Dr Wagh. “Of all women in the reproductive age 18 to 35 years, 15-20 percent suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). While younger women age 15 years to 25 years, 25 percent may suffer from irregular periods, experience hirsutism (unwanted male-pattern hair growth) and obesity, in the slightly older age group, it may lead to infertility, risk of miscarriages, and pregnancy complications. Conceiving a baby and maintaining a pregnancy can be difficult with PCOS. Around every third woman who comes to seek help from a fertility expert, has a PCOS problem. It is also common in women suffering from obesity. An ideal Body Mass Index (BMI) is 25 but when one is obese, the BMI goes over 27-28 and this becomes worrisome. PCOS is a lifelong health condition but one can man-

age it with healthy eating habits, physical activity, and weight loss,” explained Dr Bharati Dhorepatil, Fertility Consultant, Nova IVF Fertility, Pune. Dr Dhorepatil added,”Older women suffering from PCOS may take a long time to get pregnant compare to other women. Being overweight reduces fertility and can contribute to women with PCOS taking longer to conceive. Fertility treatment can be helpful for women who want to embrace motherhood. In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is one of the types of assisted reproductive technology (ART) that is given using a combination of medicines and surgical procedures in order to get pregnant.” Women with PCOS should consult an IVF expert and choose the right treatment accordingly. LIFE OF AN

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT

T

he benefits of studying in Canada are undoubtedly noteworthy, including the endless potential for growth of an individual. However, we cannot deny the fact that these opportunities are accompanied by certain cumbersome challenges that student immigrants need to overcome while searching for the right job that matches their intellects.

Every year more than 50,000-60,000 new international students are being hosted by the CIC every year. An article, ‘A vicious circle’: Newcomers struggling to find jobs in Canada despite education, experience’ by CBC News highlighted stories about the challenges faced by immigrants from India. An immigrant, Jasleen Bindri had a teaching experience of more than 10 years from home country, but still found difficulty in getting a job. She said that in Canada while finding a job everyone wants the candidate that already has a Canadian experience. However, one must get into something in order to gain the Canadian experience. She is presently doing volunteer work in certain organizations in the hope of getting again into the teaching profession. Riddhi Sawant was also an immigrant from India and she is a master’s degree holder in game design and has experience in the same field too. She came to Canada with the idea of getting the same job as she was doing in her home country in the same field as that of

her master’s degree, but what happened with her was in total contrast to her expectations. Canada was not able to provide break in her career. Ryan Drew, a director with S.U.C.C.E.S.S. said that “some newcomers have barriers that need to be overcome such as non-Canadian credentials and not enough fluency with Canada’s official languages”. The Canadian government is even planning to open for new immigrants to keep the economy of Canada viable. But the people living here say that they are finding difficulty in getting employment even though they have enough experience and skills.

PICS names its Long-Term Care Facility as ‘Guru Nanak Diversity Village’

S

urrey- Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society (PICS) wishes to announce its decision to name the upcoming 125-bed, long-term care facility for South-Asian seniors after Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Guru Nanak is one of the greatest religious, political and social reformers who was advent in the middle of the fifteenth century; as many scholars have observed, ushered in a new era of renaissance that began to dawn upon the Asian continent. Guru Nanak initiated a movement to champion for human rights with a mission to denounce discrimination and espouse the doctrine of ‘Sewa’, meaning ‘selfless service’; which involves acting selflessly and helping the underserved without any reward or personal gain. This year is the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The PICS’ Board has passed a special resolution to name the building as ‘Guru Nanak Diversity Village’ to dedicate the facility to his ideals of “equality of all human beings, irrespective of birth, gender, caste or colour”; and his universal message that “there is one God and one human race.” The new name was announced at the PICS’ AGM on Sunday, Sep-

tember 27th and was unanimously acclaimed, approved and adopted at the meeting. “We asked everyone at the AGM to make pledges to name rooms within the ‘Guru Nanak Diversity Village’

building in the names of their loved ones and within 5 minutes we received pledges for more than $250,000” said PICS President and CEO, Satbir Singh Cheema. “PICS, in its service to the community for over three decades has strived to create a more inclusive and respectful society; it is a matter of immense pleasure and honour for us to name the PICS Diversity Village after Guru Nanak to symbolize our rededication to the commitment to continue to tread the path shown by him. I believe that ‘Guru Nanak Diversity Village’ is perhaps the biggest project to be built outside of the Indian subcontinent to commemorate Guru Nanak’s 550th birth anniversary.”

‘Guru Nanak Diversity Village’ located at 6471 175A Street, is a partnership between the Ministry of Health, Fraser Health and PICS, it will be a 3-storey, 125 bed, residential care facility that will provide culturally sensitive Long-Term Complex Care to seniors with a South Asian background. The facility will employ diverse staff to communicate with the residents in their mother tongue, the residents will be served familiar food, they will be able to practice their religion and celebrate their cultural events; and they will freely enjoy their normal activities as if they were living in their own homes. The total capital cost of the project is expected to be $58 million, with PICS providing $5 million in fundraising for the construction. Once open, the Ministry of Health, through Fraser Health will provide operational funding on an ongoing basis for care services.

Pooja Bhatt: As someone who drank openly, I chose to recover openly

I

n a long Instagram post, actress-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt talked of how she combated drinking issues, highlighting why speaking up about addiction is an act of courage.

“Three years and nine months sober today. One more quarter and I will be four. As someone who drank openly, I chose to recover openly. I truly felt it was important to share my journey to tell others, women especially, who might be struggling that they are not alone & if I could do it so could they. Was ridiculed by some but lauded for being courageous by most,” Pooja wrote.

Gwyneth Paltrow opens up on coparenting with exhusband Chris Martin

“I wondered why people termed speaking openly about addiction issues courageous. And also why there is an ‘anonymous’ attached to groups that help you recover. I understand more than ever today that it’s because people simplify/stigmatize addictive behavior and tend to criminalize it without attempting to understand why someone used a substance to begin with,” she added. Consuming alcohol was completely her choice,

she averred. “Alcohol is a drug, and was my drug of choice. Just because it is socially acceptable does not mean it is not. I have had to make more excuses for not drinking in the last few years than I ever have for drinking-to friends, foes and ‘well’ meaning acquaintances alike. A fractured society can only heal & evolve when we attempt to ‘understand’ instead of constantly standing in judgement,” she continued. “When we empathize instead of vilify. Until then and even beyond, I will continue to speak from a place of compassion & truth, in the hope that there is ONE person out there I could goad to start on their own journey of sobriety and stay on their path. So help me God,” she concluded. Ranveer Singh: Dream is to help secure better future for the deaf in India

A

ctor Ranveer Singh has pledged to constantly work with the deaf community, and he says his biggest dream is to help secure a better future for the community in India.

A

ctress Gwyneth Paltrow says co-parenting with her former husband Chris Martin is not as good as it looks at times.

During a chat with actress Drew Barrymore on “The Drew Barrymore Show”, Paltrow shared how she and the Coldplay frontman, who divorced in 2016 after 12 years of marriage, work together on raising their son Moses, 14, and daughter Apple, 16, reports people. com. “It’s like you’re ending a marriage but you’re still in a family. That’s how it will be forever. Some days it’s not as good as it looks. We also have good days and bad days, but I think it’s driving towards the same purpose of unity and love and what’s best for (our kids),” said Paltrow.

International Week of the Deaf commenced on September 21, and the community worldwide also celebrates International Sign Language Day on September 23. To commemorate the occasion, Ranveer released two sign language videos intended to increase awareness about Indian Sign Language (ISL). Ranveer has been campaigning to make ISL the 23rd official language of India. “I want to elevate the experience of music for the deaf community. This is my pledge. Our biggest dream today is to help secure a better future for the deaf community in India, and we can only ask for this through our art,” Ranveer said. He urged everyone for supporting the community.

“We have this idea that just because we break up we can’t love the things about the person anymore that we loved and that’s not true,” she added.

“But to make this a reality, we need your support. I urge my fellow Indians to support this cause and fight for a brighter future for our deaf brothers and sisters,” the actor said.

For Paltrow, one of the “interesting” parts of the whole process is that she feels “in a way” like “my divorce and my relationship with Chris now is better than our marriage was, so I think that it can be done”. Source: IANS

orn in Punjab, Ishana Kullar was always into sports and extra-curricular activities, lawn tennis being her favorite sport. She moved to Canada at a tender age and the new country threw many challenges at her. She spent a lot of time polishing her skills and started acting, modelling, and hosting events. With time, she started juggling the roles successfully, both in India as well as Canada. It was her enthusiasm and dedication that helped her bag roles in films like Asli Punjab, Delhi 1984 and Kin, an English short film. She has also appeared in multiple music videos and TV shows in both Punjabi and English. Not only this, Ishana has even hosted Dhee Punjab Di, a pageant show in Punjab. After her short stint in acting she decided to move back to Canada to pursue singing and rapping as a hobby. With time, as she refined her skills, this hobby turned into a profession. Now she debates between labelling herself as a singer or rapper because of the negative image people have of female rappers in the Punjabi industry. Despite this she wants to make her mark and pave the way for herself as well as future Punjabi female rappers. “It’s not easy to become a successful singer or rapper as a Punjabi woman

5 Beauty Tips To Get Your Skin Party Ready

T

he party season is close at hand and even though you’re excited about it, your skin might not feel the same way. We can see why. Wearing makeup daily, consistent late nights and plenty of alcohol and sweet treats through the holidays can leave skin feeling fatigued, looking dull and breaking out. That’s why before it even begins, get your beauty arsenal ready with these 5 skincare tips and products to keep your face looking fresh and feeling healthy through the season.

1. Never Skip Removal The importance of makeup removal can never be skipped past. No matter how late it gets, makeup must be removed, especially before sleeping otherwise it will accumulate on the skin which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. 2. Find The Right Fit Finding makeup that works for your skin type is incredibly important. Since you’re wearing makeup more often at this time of year, the right makeup will work more cohesively with your skin to last longer and feel more comfortable in it. 3. Hydrate A Little Extra To make good on the hours you aren’t hydrating your skin, make sure you give it an added dose of nourishment whenever possible. Do this by drinking a lot of water through the day, moisturizing before applying makeup and using a hydrating face mask when possible. 4. Wash Your Brushes As makeup is a constant companion during the holiday season, ensure it goes on smoothly and hygienically. Frequent usage of your makeup brushes means more makeup and skin cells being collected in them. The only way to reduce the risk of skin infection is by cleaning your brushes regularly. 5. Scrub Away It’s possible for excess oil, makeup and debris to get caught in your pores, even after you cleanse your face. You can fix this by scrubbing your skin thoroughly on a regular basis, depending on the type of skin you have. Now you can carry on partying without worrying about your skin too much. No Trick Or Treat? Get Creative To Celebrate Halloween Safely

T

he tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-ortreating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats. It is one the most awaited days of the year for kids who get to have loads of candy without any restrictions. But, this year the scariest thing on Halloween night will not be people dressed up in costumes to scare you off, but, it will be the invisible threat of COVID-19, and adults and children should change their plans to minimize that danger, according to new guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The top U.S. health agency issued a new set of coronavirus safety recommendations on its website in what it described as a “supplement” to existing safety measures in various states and cities. The guidelines are some of the first to emerge on a national level ahead of the Halloween season in the United States and Canada. “Many traditional Halloween activities can be high-risk for spreading viruses,” the agency says on its website. “There are

36

OCTOBER 2020

several safer, alternative ways to participate in Halloween.” The CDC is urging people to avoid some of the most beloved traditions of the spooky season, including trick-or-treating and indoor costume parties, due to the “high risk” they pose for spreading the virus. It’s also labelled haunted houses, hayrides with strangers, fall festivals outside your community, drinking and “trunk or treating” as higher-risk activities during the pandemic. (Trunk-or-treating involves handing out candy from the trunk of a car). The CDC recommended several lower-risk activities for celebrating the holiday with people in your immediate household, including carving pumpkins, watching movies and holding candy scavenger hunts. The agency also described some activities that are moderately risky, such as attending an outdoor costume party in a mask, conducting one-way trick-ortreating and visiting haunted forests while maintaining more than two meters of space from others. So, keeping all the risk factors in mind, it is only advisable to be careful, cautious and indulge in the fun but also follow all the precautions ensuring maximum safety. We hope you enjoy all these festivals, but, with love, care, and a lot of safety. With inputs from www.globalnews.ca

India a Civilisational State re-architecting the Republic’

I

ndia is a Civilisational State engaged in a “grand undertaking to re-architect” the Republic. It should make a “clean break” from its “socialistic, feudal past” to maintain the momentum and should stake claim to be a world power, says a new book on the country’s journey as it approaches the 75th year of its Independence, even as it calls for course corrections in the areas of governance, bureaucracy, foreign policy and the judiciary.

broadcasting secretary is shifted to personnel and training and the steel secretary has moved to the finance ministry. “Such a system, based primarily on generalists, does not allow officers to build domain expertise and is highly detrimental to the administrative efficiency,” the authors write. As for governance, the book states it rather pithily: “The truth is that almost India’s half of ministries could vanish tomorrow, and nobody would miss them”.

“India is today attempting to achieve economic growth with individual freedom-expanding social change in a grand undertaking to rearchitect the republic. This India will be more secure, equal and prosperous, seeking a greater sway in world affairs,” Harish Madhusudan and Rajeev Mantri write in “A New Idea Of India” (Westland).

Why has it come to such a pass? “Ministries have to be literally invented to accommodate leaders and, when required, coalition partners. This situation also arises as India’s polity is also restricted when it comes to internal democracy.” “Who Judges the Judges”, the book asks and points to the telling example of the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC), whose creation had been approved by both houses of Parliament, ratified by 16 state legislatures and finally assented to by the President of India. The Supreme Court, however, struck it down 4-1 on the ground that it violated the “basic structure” of the Constitution - but did not recommend or suggest a better framework.

Noted economist Sanjeev Sanyal, in the Foreword, has described the book as “an important stop in India’s intellectual evolution”, a process that for six decades “has been dominated almost entirely by ideas and ideologies derived exclusively from various shades of the Left”. The new way forward, the authors state, is a “clean break from the socialistic, feudal past” that is “just not the correct policy prescription for India but also makes for good politics”, something that “for reasons of dynastic politics and inertia”, most of India’s opposition parties have so far been slow to respond to the changed context”. Depreciating that a “section of the Indian intelligentsia” have “gone so far” as to proclaim that “India should not become a superpower”, the authors assert: “At home to a sixth of all humanity, India can and should stake claim to be a world power. For India to succeed and all Indians to thrive and prosper, it falls upon our leaders to both recognize that there is an intense desire for a better tomorrow among India’s billion plus people , and to draw lessons from the mistakes made in the past.” What then, are the course corrections required? In the area of foreign policy, the

38

OCTOBER 2020

book says, the size of the country’s diplomatic corps “is tiny” compared to its global ambitions - there are only 2,700 staff members and 912 Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officers, with countries like China (4,500), Japan (5,700), France (6,000) and the US (20,000) way ahead. Not only should India ramp up its diplomatic strength, the selection process needs to be revamped with a separate exam to select foreign (service) officers assessing them on “parameters such as international aptitude, curiosity about the world, knowledge or demonstrated interest in foreign affairs and communications skills”, as recommended by a parliamentary panel, the book says.

Then, the brief of the civil service is to execute the policy of the government of the day. “The argument that the bureaucracy acts as a check on the whims and fancies (even corrupt proclivities) of politicians isn’t sound. That’s not their job, but that of other institutions entrusted specifically with the task of maintaining transparency,” the book says. It also speaks of the need for bureaucrats to be given ample time to develop expertise based on their interest and governmental needs. For instance, after every bureaucratic reshuffle, it’s quite common, for example, that the urban development secretary has taken charge as the home secretary, the information and

The current Collegium system of appointments, the book says, “has given rise to nepotistic tendencies in the judiciary which the Constitution makers would never have fathomed - the rot is so deep that it competes with the scourge of dynastic politics, but while the latter has been widely critiqued and has to pass frequent electoral tests, the lack of public knowledge about the extent of dynastic sway in the legal world has saved the judicial establishment from scrutiny”. There have been rare instance, though. Of the 28 incumbent Supreme Court judges, Outlook magazine reported in 2016, 11 “had either judges or legal luminaries as relatives”. Read this book- it provides you much to ponder over. By: Vishnu Makhijani

Thanksgiving:

T

hanksgiving Day is observed in the month of October in Canada, in the US however, it is celebrated in the month of November. Even though the purpose of the festival remains the same almost everywhere, it is important that we celebrate the day by being grateful for a successful year and harvest. The Thanksgiving holiday tradition in Canada dates back to when the English explorer, Martin Frobisher, came upon the land we now know as Canada while searching for a Northern passage to the Orient. When Frobisher arrived in Canada on his third voyage in 1578, he held a formal ceremony where he gave thanks for surviving the long journey - one of his ships had been lost on the way. Frobisher celebrated with salt beef and peas. South of the border, it would be another 43 years before the Pilgrims sat down to celebrate their first Thanksgiving meal. Thanksgiving became a nationally recognized holiday in Canada in 1879. The date of the holiday has moved around a few times since then, and settled on the current date in 1957.

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Today, it is celebrated by gathering with loved ones and preparing the Thanksgiving Day meal, which usually includes turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and many other dishes. There are often regional variations on the meal. For instance, Newfoundlanders might hark back to Frobisher’s original feast and serve Jiggs’ dinner, a boiled meat dish often paired with a splitpea pudding. Instead of pumpkin pie, Ontarians often serve butter tarts, bite-sized pastry shells stuffed with a syrupy filling.

government offices are to be closed and so are many local amenities. Public transport is likely to run on a holiday or Sunday schedule. Banks are also closed along with the Toronto Stock Exchange.

In New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, where the day isn’t a holiday, employers aren’t required to pay their employees for the day off so families often celebrate their thanksgiving on the Sunday before instead. With inputs from: www.officeholidays.com

Sunny set our luggage. All were feeling hungry. I first had a shower and I felt a bit fresh. We all had brunch. I was feeling very sleepy. Baljit left for Jalandhar to attend his office saying that he would come back in the evening. “Mom, please take care of Nancy now. I’m going to sleep for a while.”, I said and went to sleep. Baljit’s visa Baljit and I went to Delhi for our interview. They interviewed us one by one separately. The lady officer asked me such questions that I was shocked. She asked me what had happened between Baljit and me the first night. What should I have said that there was no relationship between us? My heart was beating very fast. I concocted a story and told her. They asked both of us to wait in the lobby after our interview. He was also asked almost similar questions in the interview. He also had concocted a story and told him. I felt everything had gone wrong.

40

OCTOBER 2020

Baljit also got worried that they would consider us a fake couple and refuse immigration visa to Baljit. We planned to narrate a mixed story out of the two, in case we were called for an interview and asked again.

And they called Baljit in about two hours for a second interview. We had planned to narrate a similar mixed story in case they ask us again. Then, I was also called in half an hour. They repeated the same questions besides a few more. I answered our new story very carefully. After an one-hour interview, the officer asked me to wait in the lobby again. Baljit was already waiting there. They had asked Baljit the same questions again. We were hoping that Baljit would get a visa.

They called Baljit to wicket number four around 4:45 P.M. They handed over refusal papers to him saying that they felt our marriage was a fake one. We were very upset. We came out of the embassy. Baljit called Canada to tell about the refusal.

Both, Baljit’s mom and dad were upset. They asked us not to worry. They also asked me and Meenu to return to Canada soon. They said that they would appeal against the decision and I had to explain everything to the lawyer in Canada. Both Meenu and I booked our tickets for Canada. We did some desired shopping. Amrit had asked Meenu to bring her driving licence along with a letter from the insurance company that she had never taken any accident claim in India. He had also bought Meenu three-month medical insurance plan because Canada didn’t cover medical insurance of a new immigrant for the first three months. The day of our departure came and all came to see us off at the Amritsar airport.

Celebrate Switzerland’s 400 yr-old love affair with tourists Switzerland is a dream destination which features on every traveller’s bucket list, from around the world. In addition to the picturesque landscapes, majestic mountains and charming towns, what makes Switzerland stand out as a tourist destination is the exceptional experience that it provides. The well connected and convenient Swiss Transport System is a boon for every tourist while the welcoming hospitality of the swiss people leaves them with memories of a lifetime.

T

his World Tourism Day, it’s only apt that we explore the origins of tourism in Switzerland. In the early 18th century, followers of the Romantic movement travelled across Europe in an attempt to follow their own desires and regularly poured their experiences in their art and literature. A poem by Jean-Jacques Rousseau published as “La Nouvelle Heloise” (The New Eloise), which spoke of the untouched beauty of Lake Geneva encouraged thousands to flock to Chillon to admire this picturesque landscape for themselves. Years later, India would romanticize Switzerland similarly thanks to Yash Chopra and many Bollywood songs.

In the 19th century, the mountains proved strikingly fascinating to the young upper class men from Britain. The first guesthouses to accommodate these young visitors began to appear: Mount Rigi in 1816; Mount Faulhorn, the highest guesthouse in Europe, in 1823;

Wengernalp in 1835; Kleine Scheidegg, looking out onto the North Face of the Eiger, in 1838; and the Rothorn (Brienz) in 1840. Even today, the grand mountain peaks lure tourists to Switzerland, some of these summits are now the hub for adrenaline pumping adventure sports. The 1854-1865 period was considered the “Golden Age of Alpinism”, when members of the British aristocracy started conquering the highest summits of the Swiss Alps. In the mid 19th century, Switzerland also welcomed Queen Victoria and her entourage for a five-week getaway. It was the first visit to the Alpine country by a reigning British monarch. The trip left its mark not only on the Queen but also on the Swiss tourism industry. In present times, the resort

town- Gstaad, greatly appeals to the Indian royalty and the Bollywood elites Like Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Virat Kolhi among others! A belief in the Alps ‘as a place of healing’, made Switzerland the best place for treatment of lung diseases. High altitude fresh air had a therapeutic effect on patients and soon gave rise to health tourism in the country. The curative regime at the new health resorts involved drinking the spring waters, hydrotherapy, and, of course, inhaling the pure mountain air. Even today, Switzerland is a top wellness destination that houses beautiful spas with world class facilities! The launch of special coach services over the mountain passes, made the high peaks accessible to a wider public. Cog railways, invented in the mid-1800s climbed the steepest of mountains, proved to be a major advantage for Swiss tourism. The first cog railway in Switzerland, running from Vitznau to Mount Rigi, opened in 1871. And many more followed, to become what is now the most well connected and developed public transport system in the world, which can be accessed by Swiss Travel Pass- a popular service which encourages Indian tourists to opt for Switzerland as a destination, due to its con-

venience and ease-of use for tourists. In 1912, the highest train station in Europe, the Jungfraujoch (altitude: 3454m) opened. The latter half of the 19th century saw the arrival not only of trains but also of hotels and guesthouses, which were springing up across the country’s mountain regions to cater to the rising influx of tourists to these areas. To this day, Switzerland’s panorama train routes are among the most beautiful rail routes in the world. Passing through the most majestic mountain scenery, idyllic valleys and villages; along crystal-clear lakes and ice-blue glaciers, the trains like Bernina Express, Glacier Express and others have become a part of the country’s heritage and history. Switzerland- a small, prosperous and peaceful nation with a stable economy quickly emerged as a thriving tourist destination with a lot of things to offer- Snow-capped mountains, ravishing landscapes and pristine waterfalls along with rich cultural and traditional experiences, adventure sports, and varied gastronomy. At the turn of the 20th century the tourism industry in the Swiss Alps became an invaluable element in the national economy. Switzerland is now the most successful nation in promoting winter tourism which accounts for a substantial part of the total revenue of the country. Source: IANS

Chess: A road to make your child smarter? Chess is a game that you can learn with basic rules in about 15 minutes, but it has more combinations than atoms in the universe. I believe chess is a discipline masking as a game. You learn through failure, when you play chess and that’s empowering to know that you can make a mistake, you can study that mistake afterwards own up to it and then just get better from it.

the classroom. It is no hidden fact and has been proved in study after study that chess increases a child’s test scores in math along with improvement in problem-solving, critical thinking, reading, special reasoning abilities. This isn’t hard to understand just look at the board before even making a move, a kid is already learning graphical coordinates. But this is just cherry on the top. Chess teaches you life skills, things like devising strategy, tactics, patience, concentration and most important of all understanding the consequences of your actions and thinking ahead. In chess you are always thinking two, three, four moves ahead. Planning out your future and seeing all possible options. Chess teaches you to think before you move and in life that translates into thinking before you act.

P

eople often underestimate the game of chess and its power. They also suffer from a common misconception that only smart people play chess when in fact it is the other way around: CHESS MAKES YOU SMART. It imbues you with values and skills that you’ll use for the rest of your life both in and outside

Chess has it all patience, pattern recognition and memory. Chess is an equalizer: Age doesn’t matter, gender doesn’t matter, race doesn’t matter. It gives kids confidence, it raises their self-esteem, and it shows them that even if they don’t have the resources, they still have the potential to succeed. In recent years we’ve become so focused on quantitative measures and direct ways of getting to those quantitative measures that we’ve forgotten about indirect ways of getting there. Chess helps to increase those quantitative test scores but also gives kids more than that. Kids understand that they must move, they look at the board, they explore their options, they evaluate the consequences, and they act.

At what age can you begin to teach chess to a child? Children can learn chess very early, some even as early

as two years old! The key is to teach them in a childoriented way, instead of relying on standard methods for adult learners or for school children. Unfortunately, that’s how many children are taught and that might just be why some lose interest quickly! It’s too much for most young (or old) children to grasp in one sitting. It is important not to thrust all six pieces into a young child’s hands, explaining to him or her how they move in just a few minutes. Instead, it is a good idea to break up the lessons into segments, isolating the game into component parts. Achieving notable success in the field requires having a competent teacher to guide you in the right direction, help build on your strengths and work on your flaws. Well, if the intricacies of chess are something you’ve always wanted your kid to master. You can have an experienced teacher who can be the right person to train your kid. Joy is an International Chess Coach who has played many international matches and has many national accolades in his bag. He majors in Montessori coaching in Delhi as he believes directing a child in the right direction from the right age is vital for learning process. Utopia: Gruesome pandemic drama portant because they seem convinced that clues to global calamities such as Ebola, SARS and MERS were hidden in the artwork of Dystopia. They believe Utopia might have hints about possible horrors to come, as well as pointers on how to deal with them.

Utopia (series streaming on Amazon Prime) Cast: John Cusack, Rainn Wilson, Sasha Lane, Ashleigh LaThrop, Jessica Rothe, Dan Byrd, Desmin Borges, Christopher Denham Created by: Gillian Flynn Rating: * * * (three stars)

They soon realize there are many others like them who are after the manuscript, and many of them will stop at nothing.

A cult graphic novel seems to hold clues about viruses and other catastrophes that threaten to annihilate humankind. Fancy that as an eerie dose of entertainment in the time of pandemic. Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn writes and executive-produces eight episodes of the nihilistic action drama Utopia, based on the cult British conspiracy thriller series of the same name that launched in 2013. While the core of the original is retained, this new American recreation is predictably more formulaic in its bid to connect with a wider audience. A woman cleaning her late grandfather’s house finds the hand-drawn draft of a graphic novel. The pages, it turns out, are an unpublished manuscript of Utopia, a sequel to a bestseller named Dystopia that was published six years ago, but the author strangely never re-

leased a follow-up. Knowing that Dystopia has a fiercely loyal fan following, she decides to auction the manuscript to the highest bidder. The story then follows four Dystopia fans who have never met but have stayed in touch online just to bond over their favorite graphic novel. Upon hearing the sequel to Dystopia is up for sale, Sam (Jessica Rothe), Ian (Dan Byrd), Becky (Ashleigh LaThrop), and Wilson (Desmin Borges) decide to meet and pitch in with money to buy the book. For the quartet, buying Utopia is im-

The series unfolds with lots of violence often bordering on gore (there is at least one gruesome sequence in each episode), though it does not always have a thriller impact. Gillian Flynn goes lower on black humor than the original British series, which is not of much help considering the overall storytelling is not always engaging. Utopia would seem interesting in these times of Covid because the show talks of a virus that spreads through the air, of hotspots, lockdowns and quarantine, and mixes these with the plot of fan frenzy that a graphic novel might generate. The Covid parallels in the story are only too stark. The show’s big star attraction John Cusack as Dr. Kevin Christie develops a pro-

tein that some of the young victims had, and virologist Michael Stearns (Rainn Wilson) realizes these young victims display symptoms that were spotted years before in Peru. Yet, Flynn never really goes anywhere with such an interesting premise beyond using it for heightened, sporadic violence. Every time a plot point begins to seem interesting, the narrative loses and the impact gets diluted. Of the cast, John Cusack lends some Hollywood glitter while Ashleigh LaThrop’s Becky is well performed. Sasha Lane has a defining role as the antagonist Jessica Hyde, though for better effect the character needed to be fleshed out better. From rom-com (The Mindy Project) to thriller (Gone Girl, Sharp Objects) to action (Widows), projects bearing the Gillian Flynn signature have always had nuanced storytelling and characterization. Utopia could seem like an anomaly. Watch the show for a reminder of what we are living through, if you must. By: Vinayak Chakravorty
