Passionate Story Teller & Film Maker Harish Masand

E

xpressing himself through different art forms has been Harish’s endeavor for three decades. He carved his niche as a bilingual broadcaster at All India Radio Delhi in early 1990s. Soon it led him becoming a voice artist for dramas and plays. With expertise in diction, tone and dialogue delivery, doors opened in the world of stage and theatre. Three years with Barry John’s IMAGO theatre group in Delhi polished his acting skills, but under the wings of this maestro Harish realized his strength lied in writing and story telling. Masters in English Literature and passion for Hindi language gave him the freedom to express himself in both languages. He has been writing poetry, plays and short stories for many years and continues to do so till date. His poems have been part of many anthologies published all over the world. Harish migrated to Canada about a decade ago, but his journey of self discovery is still on. Hindi Literary Society of Canada B.C. released his first book in Surrey in 2017, a collection of short stories titled ‘Harf Adhure’ meaning Incomplete Words. He

gives full credit to his team and family, specially his wife Anupa Masand who believed in and supported his vision. His cast includes Jayesh Kodwani, Andy Kalirai, Chhavi Disawar, Nutan Thakur and Melanie Chevrier to name a few. He believes one doesn’t have to create stories, they are all around us, we just have to spot them and weave them in words. He is now preparing for his second film in Vancouver which is going to address the issue of intercultural integration and the challenges faced by the new immigrants, particularly the children. He strongly believes in promoting our local talent and soon will start auditioning for the roles. His team is in place and gearing up for the next venture. Recently Harish wrote the screenplay, produced and directed his first short film ‘The Lounge’ being showcased and receiving accolades in International Film Festivals across the globe. His profile on FilmFreeway with winning laurels as Screenplay Writer and Director has been noticed and he has been offered to work with ‘Lonely Wolf International Films’ in England. During his visit to India last month, Harish was approached by Mr. Prakash Bhardwaj from Mumbai Film Industry to explore the possibilities of working together. Mr. Bhardwaj has been working with Mr. Aamir Khan for 15 years as his dialogue coach. Mr. Bhardwaj also runs his acting and dialogue training classes in Mumbai. A mom who inspires to strike the Nikita Sharma

arpinder is a mother of three, works as a community shuttle bus driver in B.C and dons many other hats effortlessly. There are glitches at times, but wait? Who has a smooth sail all the time? Hailing from India, she had completed her studies from the prestigious Panjab University in Chandigarh. She moved to Canada almost a decade back and like any other migrant, the initial years were tough. She said, “the first two years were hard as I had to work for 16-17 hours sometimes, even more. It all

Life did reward me for all the hardwork and I am glad I put in all that effort back then.” Years later, she makes sure to keep her work and personal life balance intact. Harpinder said, “life was challenging initially as I moved here. Ever since I tried to follow the principles of self-management which includes emotional management, self-reorganization, time management and selfdiscipline, I have seen a tremendous improvement.” “Also, since I always desired to be a working and financially independent woman, the zeal to live a life on my terms kept me motivated. I started preparing a weekly schedule which was proportionally distributed to my professional hours and family hours, social interaction, and individual development. As I kept practicing this schedule, the routine settled into a more constructive manner facilitating my multitasking weeks”, she added. Talking about her strengths and weaknesses, “I recently read a quote that being a mother is learning about the strengths you didn’t know you had. It fits me appropriately, I feel. The hindrances that come with raising My kids have hit our family hard, however the challenges make the triumphs even sweeter. What is labelled as a weakness is accompanied by an amazing strength. And this is what I continue to learn every passing day”, she said.

Keeping herself motivated to take all the challenges that life throws at her every day, she tries to keep a positive approach. Managing a house, three kids and a job isn’t easy after all. She says, “a sense of duty to be true to each of the fronts keeps me motivated to contribute my best in all the directions.” Going on a picnic or a trip together are her favourite ways to have some quality time together with her family. She makes sure all the members of her family have at least one meal together. “Since we are in a foreign land, I feel it’s important to impart our cultural values to the kids so that they keep connected to their roots. My everyday lessons to my kids include practising love and compassion as well as instilling morals and cultural beliefs in them.” On being asked about what played an important role in her journey here in a different country, she said, “a spirit of self-exploration and through that to explore the newer ambience of the world was the mantra I followed. As I started practising these, it helped me strike a balance between my professional identity and family affairs which ultimately motivated me to look for a greener zone of settlement. She says if she could have one superpower, she would have caused miracles for women empowerment -- right from their education to their financial and personal independence. “I would also create this earth as a

heaven for children, especially those who are orphans and homeless, providing them all that is needed to lead a comfortable life. She says her teachers who have been guiding her through the years are her ultimate source of inspiration but the best teacher that exists according to her is – Life. “It teaches you lessons like no other and a wise person should always learn from their lessons and experiences.” Talking about her future goals, she said, “in the next 5 years, I see myself as a better individual as I keep reading books of the saner world. It has already started broadening my understanding of the constructed logics which keeps us busy in our day-to-day life. I feel five years down the line I would have saved a better balance of bucks for the greater comforts of my family,” she added. She signed off! Our brief conversation with Harpinder only made us realise that life is made of little experiences and bubbles of happiness. One must cherish those bubbles before they burst. She is not just a woman who is making the lives of people around her better, but also making this world a better place to live in. We wish her all the luck and happiness for her future endeavours. Surrey Police Service Visits Newton Gurdwara During Vaisakhi

O

n April 10th, members of the new Surrey Police Service – Chief Constable Norm Lipinski, Staff Sergeant Sukh Sidhu and Sergeant Jag Khosa – visited Surrey Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Sahib to celebrate Vaisakhi with the local community. Chief Lipinski spoke to those in attendance and provided an update on Surrey’s policing transition, and to share information on how he is building a community-based policing model that is tailor-made for Surrey residents. Surrey Police Service is striving to build a police service that reflects the community it serves. Understanding that Surrey is home to a large Sikh population and has many Sikh places of worship,

Surrey Police Service has equipped all of their police officers with head scarfs so they can remain respectful to the Sikh community when they attend Gurdwaras for community engagement or other policing duties.

Surrey Police officers deployed and actively responding to calls for service. This is part of the phased, integrated policing transition that has been approved by the three levels of government. Eventually, Surrey Police Service will become

the official police of jurisdiction for Surrey. While the timeline has not yet been set for the transition of policing command, Chief Lipinski and his staff are working hard to ensure they have the technology, equipment, and resources in place to make this a smooth transition for all Surrey residents.

Recognizing the importance of educating police officers to understand the communities they serve, Surrey Police Service trains all of their officers on the diverse cultural make-up of Surrey. All officers who join SPS are provided with cultural sensitivity training, which includes an introduction to South Asian culture. Surrey’s policing transition from the RCMP to Surrey Police Service is well underway, with 196 police officers now hired and over 60

all you need to know about Rabies Protocols In this month’s article, we will be discussing a disease in which many pet owners tremble at hearing its name, Rabies. This zoonotic disease, meaning that it is very transmittable between animals and humans, is reportable and therefore places your veterinarian in a very tricky situation, if your pet is exposed.

P

rimarily, it is carried within wildlife, especially bats, and then can be transferred to your pet during an encounter, where bites or wounds take place and saliva enters the site of impact. Similarly, if an infected animal were to bite a human, it would give precedent for possible rabies infection

spread. The most common physical signs that your dog or cat may display is behaviour change and increased vocalization. This means that your pet may show excessive aggressiveness, hiding constantly, irritability and even extreme excitabil-

ity. Your furry companion may show lameness in their gait. Depending on each animal, these signs could present themselves as very acute and quick to take place, or they could also take their time and progressively develop over a period. Classically, there are two main forms of this disease that are known to present within the patient. The first form is called the ‘Dumb Form’. In this, the patient mainly presents with salivating from the mouth excessively and may find it difficult to swallow in general. The second form is called the ‘Furious Form”. This form presents more behavioural issues of being very anxious and aggressive. These animals may also experience seizures and unfortunately, become paralysed in the process. Typically, if any animal is suspected to have Rabies, the ideal and standard method of diagnosing includes testing the brain and sending it to a laboratory for confirmed analysis. However, there are many different protocols set in place for different case scenarios for certain animals or pets that have been potentially exposed. If your pet is unvaccinated and has seemed to encounter this disease, the options are plain and simple. Depending on if any symptoms are present and the condition of the animal, either legally it will be euthanized and a brain sample will be sent for testing, or your pet will be placed in a quarantine situation for four months. However, they will be given a rabies vaccination upon their entry into this quarantine period. If your pet is fully vaccinated with the Rabies vaccine and is up to date with its current one, then a booster rabies vaccination will be administered right away, and the owner will be responsible for keeping their pet in quarantine and strict observation for up to 45 days. Any pets that have taken the rabies vaccine before,

however are now overdue for their current one during a situation like this, will need to show proof of such from their owners. Once proof of vaccination has been presented, the animal will receive a booster Rabies vaccination and again be kept under strict quarantine and observation by their owner for 45 days. Protocols also extend towards animals who may be exposed and have bitten humans. If that dog or cat is overall very healthy, whether it has received a rabies vaccine prior or not, legally it will need to be quarantined for 10 days. The 10day mark is important, as it is the average time in which aggressive signs of rabies in animals may present themselves. However, this healthy animal at the time will not receive any rabies vaccine. This incident will legally be reported to the local health department once any new symptoms, indicating Rabies, have taken place. If symptoms do arise, then euthanasia and a brain sample submission will be given. If the animal that bit the human is a stray or unwanted dog or cat, then immediate euthanasia and rabies testing will occur. We highly recommend that it is very important to always keep track of your pet’s vaccination status and have them up to date on all their vaccines. Unfortunately, in situations like this, the biggest regret that most pet owners will experience is not being up to date on their pet’s rabies vaccination and thus having the animal suffer the consequences.

‘Jersey’: Shahid delivers a knockout performance By: TROY RIBEIRO Duration: 176 minutes Director: Gowtam Tinnanuri Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Mrunal Thakur, Pankaj Kapur, Ronit Kamra, Rudrashish Majumder, Geetika Mehandru, Anjum Batra, Shishir Sharma Rating: ***1/2 Gowtam Tinnauri’s ‘Jersey’, a remake of a popular Telugu film by the same name, is about the struggle of Arjun Talwar, a gifted cricketer from Chandigarh, Punjab. It is his journey from being a successful batsman who throws in the towel and how, a demand from his son, who heroworships him, for the Indian jersey on his birthday, which he is unable to fulfil, makes him bounce into the cricket field, at the age of 36 with grit and determination, and earn one for his son, forms the crux of this narrative. The film is tediously long and delves too much into the intricacies of the cricket matches, although shot beautifully. One is almost transported to the cricket stadium, sometimes needlessly. The thrill and nail-biting excitement of a match are offered in abundance but not necessarily compulsory, as they do not propel the story forward. The story is narrated in a compelling manner, enough to keep you engaged. Yet, the first half encapsulating his life, romance, and entry as well as exit from cricket, narrated in a non-linear manner feels unduly long.

emotion on Shahid Kapoor’s distraught face with ease, as well as the finer nuances of the cricket matches, making them look larger than life. The film lacks drama, and except for an unexpected twist at the end it lacks the intrigue factor. There are poignant moments aplenty that tug at your heartstrings and make you empathize with Arjun, but high-octane drama and gripping moments, the plot is devoid of, making the graph of the film appear to be meandering on an even keel.

The film belongs to Shahid Kapoor, who delivers an outstanding performance as the frustrated and helpless Arjun Talwar, who has been written off by everybody. Shahid essays the character with the requisite maturity and restraint, exhibiting his emotions with subtlety, suppressing the raging volcano within. Pankaj Kapur as Arjun’s coach, mentor, and wellwisher, who believes in his talent, delivers a realistic portrayal, as does the little Kittu (Ronit Kamra), who is expressive and plays Arjun’s son. He is a natural, and the father-son bond is heartwarming.

Mrunal Thakur, as his wife Vidya, delivers her part effectively. The music complements the film but does not really stand out enough, to leave an impact. The film is beautifully shot by Anil Mehta, and his lens captures every trace of

Director Gowtam Tinnanuri extracts natural performances from each actor and handles the subject astutely but lays undue emphasis on the cricket matches. With a runtime of 174 minutes, the narrative tests your patience, but you hold on. Is it okay to leave to leave your tan untreated?

O

pting for a sunset tan to get that exotic sunkissed look is always in vogue. Tanned skin elicits attention as it gives a slightly flushed appearance too. Many celebrities have hopped on the tanning bandwagon, either naturally by exposing skin to sun or through various tanning procedure. However, does getting a tan have serious repercussions? Shahnaz Husain shares some expert advice on the matter.

Tanning is not only considered unsafe because it comes with the risk of getting a sunburn, which can directly contribute to skin cancer depending on the rate and time of exposure. Tanning is also problematic because the process of tanning involves ultraviolet rays piercing your skin and completely meddling with your DNA! Tanning exposes the naked skin (when it is not protected

by sunscreen or other skin care creams) to both UV-A and UV-B

rays. Both these are damaging in multiple ways, but UV-A rays in particular break down the natural collagen present in the skin. Collagen is a component of the skin that aids in strengthening the skin, tightening it and providing the hydration it requires. Once collagen production is affected, the skin will start appearing unhealthy and lose its sheen. Wrinkles and blemishes can also form faster as a result, thereby completely affecting the quality of your skin. Many people think that tanning helps them because it adds more melanin to the skin which can be protective in nature. This is a false and dangerous assumption. Yes, melanin acts as a natural sunscreen for the skin in normal cases; but it is produced in large quantities when tanning takes place on exposure to the sun. However, the striking difference is that melanin is produced after much damage is done to the skin cells. So, over-production of melanin can do you only so much good. Sun tanning for aesthetic reasons is not recommended for anybody in the long run as it can fasten the process of skin ageing. No amount of anti-ageing therapy or use of products can help reverse this after a point. The skin also has the chance of becoming dry and rough. Sun tanning also promotes pigmentation while darkening

freckles present on the skin. These effects may not show up immediately, but when they do, there is nothing much one can do at that point. Experts say that people can enjoy their time basking in the sun; however, they should only do so when the sun is not overhead during scorching summers. They should also make sure to use sunblock or sunscreen of at least SPF 40. Anybody and everybody is not safe exposing themselves to the scorching sun without applying and re-applying sunscreen a few times a day. In fact, people who claim to not have direct exposure to the sun should also do this because harmful UV rays can even pierce through the windshields of cars! Studies have shown that this practice of regularly applying sunscreen helps reduce the risk of skin cancer by a significant margin. One can also use natural or DIY methods to deal with a stubborn tan - you can rub raw potato peels on the skin or apply aloe vera gel right after exposure. These two methods cool the skin down and also prevent surface damage that may have been caused by harmful sunlight. However, to avoid internal damage, the preventive methods mentioned before may be more useful. After all, as the saying goes - prevention is better than cure. ictoria Day is celebrated across Canada in the month of May. The holiday began as a celebration to honor Queen Victoria, who ruled Great Britain and Ireland for most of the 19th century. Victoria Day has been observed since 1845, and it was officially declared a Canadian federal holiday in 1901 -- the year of Queen Victoria’s death. The holiday was originally celebrated on May 24, Queen Victoria’s birthday. But an amendment to the laws of Canada in 1952 established that Victoria Day be observed on the Monday, preceding May 25. When Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne in 1952, Victoria Day became her official birthday in Canada -- even though her actual birthday is April 21. The day unofficially signals the start of summer for many Canadians, and it is celebrated with parades and fireworks in some cities. Some Canadians get the day off from work.

Then she lay by my side quietly. Soon, she began snoring softly. Sam came and lay on the other side of Nancy. He had a fatherly gaze at Nancy. Then he closed his eyes for a moment, raised his face up, opened his eyes and kissed Nancy’s forehead. I wished if Sam had been so sane in the beginning, I wouldn’t have suffered so much. I was continuously looking at Sam. After kissing Nancy’s forehead, Sam began fingering my hair. I closed my eyes with a deep sigh of relief. I felt like a rudderless boat

had reached the shore. Though my eyes were seeing darkness, I was seeing a new happy morning. Suddenly, I recalled the pandit’s forecast that I didn’t have happymarried-life stars. But leaving such thoughts aside, I decided to live in my present.

We visited the CN tower. I was astonished to see its height. We went up there by an elevator. Nancy and I saw through the glass floor and saw people, vehicles and other places, looking like very small toys down on the ground. We were unable to believe our eyes.

From three to four Nancy and I began having a very blessed life. Sam loved Nancy so much that sometimes my eyes welled up with happiness. I often prayed to god that Sam and Nancy would not be adversely affected by even my pleasure that I was deriving from their love. Sam began caring and loving us so much that he made me forget all my past sorrows. Sam tried to give us time as much as possible. After two months of our reunion, it was summer time. Despite his busy work, Sam took a few days off and took us to Toronto by air.

The next day, we visited Niagara Falls. Its beauty was awesome. I remembered didi had told me that the water was coming from Lake Erie and going to Lake Ontario. We also had the ferry ride there. Nancy and I were very happy that day, and Sam was very happy to see us glad. Continued in next edition

Motherhood is not an easy job, and we must thank our mothers for giving their best without expecting anything in return.

How to balance your ‘doshas’ during summer?

‘Doshas’ are biological energies found in our bodies and minds made up of five major elements (Panchabhutas), which are linked to our five senses and subtle actions. Doshas govern our physical, physiological, mental, and emotional processes and define our optimal health.

Each of the ‘doshas’ - VATA, PITTA, and KAPHA - has a specific function in our body and is supposed to be present at an optimum level to determine perfect health, and any imbalance in these ‘doshas’ can harm our health. Below is how ‘doshas’ are formed from the five great

During this time, our digestive fire and vitality are also at their lowest. Because summer is the season of Pita aggravation, one should consume more pita-calming foods during this time. Foods that are cooling, liquid in consistency, sweet in taste, moist and oily are recommended to calm Pita. Avoiding foods that are spicy, hot, sour, or salty should be avoided. During the summer season, milk, ghee, naturally sweet foods, coconut water, jeera water rice preparation, and so on are recommended to balance the ‘doshas’.

Excess Pita ‘dosha’ is managed during the summer by foods with three prominent tastes in our food that

are sweet, bitter, and astringent in nature. Milk, root vegetables, most grains, fresh yoghurt, and other naturally sweet foods are excellent pita pacifiers. Aside from these bitter foods, other pita-friendly foods include kale, dandelion, dark chocolate, and spices such as cumin, neem leaves, turmeric, and others. The bitter taste is also very refreshing to the body. Bitter foods also benefit the blood, satisfy thirst, balance the appetite, support digestion, and absorb moisture and excess pitta. Beans, fruits, vegetables, apples, berries, broccoli, and other cruciferous vegetables, in addition to these, help to reduce summer stress. While we should focus on some of the foods listed above, we should also try to limit certain foods that can aggravate the summer’s predominantly high ‘dosha’. These foods are either overly pungent, sour, or salty. Foods like chillies, onions, and spicy spices should be avoided or limited. Fermented foods, grapes, pineapple, and foods that cause a burning sensation in the stomach should be avoided in our daily diet. Salad dressings containing lime, on the other hand, can be used in place of traditional salad dressings. Another element that can both increase and decrease inflammation in the body is salt. This has received a lot more attention since the COVID-19 pandemic, which made people realise how important it is to live a healthy lifestyle and eat well.

Obsession with good lifestyle choices or healthy eating, on the other hand, can have serious physical and emotional consequences. Eating healthy, nutritious food is beneficial to the body, but for those suffering from orthorexia, the harm outweighs the benefit (a term used to define an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating). It’s like pushing healthy eating to the point where it causes problems in everyday life, and the situation spirals out of control. One of the most important aspects of recovering from an eating disorder is learning to better manage one’s overall health, which is where alternative therapies can help. Meditation is the way to open the mind and navigate negative, judgmental thoughts about body image while remaining comfortable. Feelings and thoughts, especially negative ones, are the most difficult obstacles to overcome in life. Meditation practitioners are able to see beyond the nature of thought entirely. Vaccinations In countries where tuberculosis is more common, infants often are vaccinated with bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine. The BCG vaccine isn’t recommended for general use in the Canada. First nations living in bands are offered BCG as rates are high there. During the physical exam, your doctor will check your lymph nodes for swelling and use a stethoscope to listen to the sounds your lungs make when you breathe. The most commonly used diagnostic tool for tuberculosis is a skin test, though blood tests are becoming more commonplace. A small amount of a substance called tuberculin is injected just below the skin on the inside of your forearm. You should feel only a slight needle prick.

Blood tests Blood tests can confirm or rule out latent or active tuberculosis. These tests measure your immune system’s reaction to TB bacteria. These tests require only one office visit.
