Valentine’s The best gift to your beloved this

V

alentine’s Day is that time of year when romance reigns supreme. Candlelit restaurant dinners, candy, cards, gifts and flowers, people don’t leave any stone unturned to impress the love of their life. There is an endless expression of love seen everywhere.

I’m all in support of celebrating love, shouting out loud our obsession and devotion to one another. I love romantic dinners, cards, flowers, presents as well. However, what I most treasure as a gift, not just on Valentine’s Day, but every day, is the gift of my beloved’s presence. Because we live in times when everything is so “out there”, everyone likes to show the best version of their lives on the social media and there is a constant need to be the best out of the lot. This isn’t something that only you and I feel but many men and women go through the same dilemma. And in order to win this rat race of being the best,

sometimes, we lose out on a lot of stuff unknowingly.

Valentine’s Day is a reminder to celebrate, but every day is an opportunity to share the presence of your dearest partner. Try and begin by adding a few extra seconds to each kiss, to each touch. Create pauses in your togetherness, make time for when there is nothing to do, nothing to say. Abide in the love that circulates between you. Ask for, and give, the time necessary to make this a purposeful, daily practice. Listen to one another, listen with your heart. Look at each other in your moments of passion. Recognize and

appreciate that when you share your vital life force with another, a cellular transformation takes place that energizes you from the inside out. And, because we are all connected, our evolution contributes to the ongoing presence of love in our whole world. The giving and receiving of presence is truly a gift that should be encouraged. So, this Valentine’s Day, promise to celebrate and cherish the love you have, everyday. You might not realize but your relationship could bloom like never before and each day would then be the day of love for you.

How Loving

Yourself Can Strengthen Your Relationships

S

elf love has been talked about on the internet far more than ever recently, as more and more people are coming to realize that the only healthy way to live is via allowing yourself the space to be flawed and then work through these flaws. Self love is not to be mistaken for being self obsessed or being self important. Self love is acceptance of one’s inabilities as well as inhibitions, and then remembering that working on these is never easy. Self love requires patience and practice. Self love is important for anyone’s self esteem, and attempting to reach its zenith is the ultimate goal for a happy and fulfilled life. In order to function healthily in several aspects of your life and maintain interpersonal relationships, loving yourself is a mandatory. Loving yourself can help improve your relationships significantly; this is how: 1. People treat you the way you treat yourself In our attempt to be available, we end up being clingy as we seek validation from others. It is important to validate ourselves and feel important, and therefore worthy of attention. When we feel that certain sense of confidence about ourselves and our personality, others follow and

6

FEBRUARY 2020

for your

enable us to feel the same. After all, human beings do learn by imitation! 2. No one can love you adequately until you do the same You set your own standards for how you should be treated by the way you treat yourself. If you keep going out of your way to help the people in your life without

prioritizing yourself, they will start doing the same. Instead of being a cooperation that enables you to shine, such a relationship will continually drain you of all energy and leave you exhausted and never feeling enough. For your relationships to treat you the right way and make you feel important, it is a must that you prioritize yourself. 3. Allow yourself some flaws and failings so you can accept theirs Being unable to accept our own flaws suggests often point to insecurities; and when we cannot stomach our own shortcomings, there is no way to work on them and improve ourselves. When we do not give ourselves this room to grow, we are likely to fail to provide it to those in our life as well. Loving ourselves means

understanding that we are imperfect, and allow us to accept those we love as imperfect too. 4. Self reliance

own happiness is the only solution

Relying on other people for our happiness is a recipe for disaster; no one can live your life and consistently know how you are feeling or what you are going through. Processing our emotions by ourselves, seeking help when we need, practicing self reliance enables us to take responsibility for our happiness. Moreover, it helps us cheer up those we love when they are not feeling up to it, because love is more about giving than it is about receiving. 5. Loving yourself makes you a better lover When we practice kindness, patience, reliability, forgiveness, and acceptance towards ourselves, we become capable of providing others with the same. By holding together ourselves when we are not feeling okay, we can train ourselves to do the same for others by being sensitive towards their feelings, actions and reactions. Loving yourself is the answer If you seek love, then begin with providing yourself with that love. Being open and available to such feelings not only makes us better at our relationships, but also makes us better human beings.

Life with Invisalign:

What you need to know about caring for your aligners I’ve found when it comes to how to clean Invisalign, the best (and most affordable) thing to do is to just brush your aligners gently with a toothbrush and rinse them with lukewarm water. Skip the abrasive toothpaste, which can scratch the aligners, and the hot water, which can damage them. Brushing and rinsing usually does the job of keeping your aligners clear, and odor- and plaque-free. Clean them every time you brush your teeth and rinse them before putting them back in your mouth after eating or drinking. To be continued in the next issue Dr Vishal Sharma BSc, DDS, Cert. Ortho. FRCD(C), FCDS(BC)

Continued from last issue Invisalign and oral hygiene It’s not just liquids that can get caught between your aligners and your teeth. If you eat or drink something and don’t brush your teeth or at least rinse your mouth out before putting your aligners back in, food debris, sugars or starches can also do the same thing. The bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar and starches from food and release acids that eat away at your tooth enamel, which can lead to tooth decay. Usually, our saliva helps wash away some of the bacteria, food and plaque and also aids in the remineralization process. However, your saliva does not flow as freely under the aligners so it doesn’t have a chance to wash things away or remineralize the teeth. Instead, the teeth are exposed to whatever is trapped under your aligners for longer than they normally would be. This is why oral hygiene is important when you have Invisalign. You’ll be able to brush the same way you always have because there are no brackets and wires in the way. However, you’ll want to brush more frequently. Brush your teeth in the morning, after eating or drinking, and before bed using a fluoride toothpaste. Bringing a travel www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

toothbrush and toothpaste when you’re on the go is great way to make sure it’s always on hand. If you forget it, rinse your mouth out really well and then brush as soon as you get home. As for flossing, be sure to floss once daily. If you want a little extra smile protection, use a fluoride mouthwash before going to bed as well. How to clean Invisalign Now that you know how often to brush and floss, what about how to clean Invisalign trays? You’ve probably heard of the different Invisalign cleaning products like the Invisalign cleaning crystals. You put your aligners in a container with warm water, add the Invisalign cleaning crystals, shake the container and then let the aligners soak for about 15 minutes. It really does get rid of plaque and any bad smells. However, any of the cleaning systems are better suited to occasionally deep cleaning Invisalign retainers since you’re using them for a longer period of time. You only wear your aligners for a week or so before switching to the next set. You probably don’t actually need to deep clean them. By the time they have a chance to get a little gross, it’s time to move on to a fresh tray anyway. FEBRUARY 2020

Taking centre stage as Galt’s first Sikh mayor Pargat Sandhu has come a very long way in almost every way imaginable, not only was he the first Sikh to sit on and chair the Galt Planning Commission, he is the first Sikh councilman and now the mayor of Galt in California, USA.

orn in a small village of Basesharpur, in Jalandhar Punjab, India, Pargat Sandhu moved to the U.S. decades back. Unlike any other man, moving to a new country was overwhelming. Reminiscing the challenges he had faced back then, Sandhu said, “It was definitely a very big challenge coming from a different country. I came here to live the American Dream. I came here with nothing and had to start from scratch. Finding a job and a place to live were some of the biggest challenges”. But he didn’t give up. He landed a job with USPS, and later took an early retirement opportunity after 25 years of service from his

management position. After retiring from the USPS, he found more time to be involved in his community and in public service. That is when he started being more interested in politics. With a positive thought process, he feels “If we are involved, that is only way we can bring about change in our community.” And soon, things took a different turn for him. He began his journey. Having lived in the City of Galt for the past 25 years, he was involved in many organizations in the community. As per Sandhu, he became more involved when he was first appointed to the

some plans in his mind, “I will have just completed my election term as City Council. I plan to continue staying involved in politics, spending time with family, and my businesses.” Some of the biggest changes he wants to see in the whole world are improvements and better access in the education and health systems. “I would also like to see world peace.” With such a demanding job he tries and manages to devote time to his family. “Yes, I always make sure to spend quality time with my family. Family is very important and a great support system. My idea of a perfect vacation is going back to my homeland in India. In my free time, I like to spend time with my family, especially my grandchildren,” he said.

Planning Commission for the city in 2012. He served six years on the Planning Commission, as both Chair and Vice Chair. Then in 2018, he decided to run in the election for City Council. After winning the election and serving his first year as a council member, by unanimous vote, he was appointed as the mayor in December 2019. When asked if he was always interested in politics, Sandhu said, “No, after retiring from the United State Postal Service, I found more time to be involved in my community and in public service. That is when I started being more interested in politics. If we are involved, that is only way we can bring about change in our community.” Sandhu feels that a change is always needed in every domain of life in this ever evolving world. He feels that to bring about any change in a society, there is a need for transparency. “I believe everyone should be well-informed and have a good understanding on issues, so they have a better idea of where they stand on these issues. Any changes affect all of us on some level, so it is important to be involved and voice our concerns.”

With our planet facing such harsh conditions (Wildfires in Australia, in Amazon in past, and California as well facing fires and floods in 2019), Sandhu feels that the planet could be saved in various ways but primarily we need to all educate ourselves on ways to help save the planetwhether its recycling and reducing waste or reducing emissions into our air quality.

Pargat Sandhu the very lucky individuals who are privileged enough to have a life that can inspire others contributes to the development of his home town in India. “I contribute to both the village I grew up in – Basesharpur, and the surrounding cities. I try to go back once a year and help where I can. I

To be the best version of yourself requires you to practice self care on an everyday basis, and there is no better time to cultivate this habit than right now. Take the 7-day self care challenge and practice the following simple behaviors to care for your physical and mental wellbeing. 1. Give yourself one goal to accomplish Give yourself one small task to complete at the end of the day; this may be to water the plants or change the sheets- something you can do for no reward other than the satisfaction of doing it. Complete the task, and then take a minute to tell yourself

10

FEBRUARY 2020

you have done a great job, because you have. 2. Dress up and play nice Wake up 15 minutes earlier than usual, or pick out your outfit the night before; wear the fancy pair of shoes you reserve for special occasions, or take some extra time doing your hair. Give yourself just a few more minutes than usual to dress in a way that makes you feel beautiful and spoilt. Remember to look great for yourself, so you feel great. 3. Go for a jog, or just walk Move that body; exercise and get your heart pumping. Go for a jog at the park nearby or just take a walk to appreciate the flowers and trees and sky. Being outdoors is always refreshing for our minds that are generally contained within brick and mortar the whole day. If you get some sunlight, bonus point to you! 4. Meditate for just 5 Take no more than 5 minutes

out, anytime you like- when you wake up or before you go to bed, and meditate. This does not have to be yoga or guided meditation with an app. Simply sit back for five minutes to recount everything you’ve done throughout the day and what is on your mind. 5. Fix your sleep cycle No matter how tempting it may be to watch another episode in the night or hit snooze the next morning, choose to make the healthier choice by sleeping at the right time and then getting eight hours of uninterrupted sleep. 6. Don’t just drink water, hydrate The two sips of water when you are parched are not enough, you need to hydrate properly. Keep track of how much fluid you are consuming through the course of the day. Keep a water bottle next to you at the desk, and take a sip every time you see it. 7. Organize the space around you

Take a minute to fold the laundry, organize the papers on your desk, and put your essentials in the drawer after you are done using them. Disorganized and cluttered spaces around us are often the reason we cannot focus and our mind keeps on getting distracted, so clean up and allow yourself some mental peace. Are you ready to care for yourself? Making plans is one thing, living up to them is another. While it can be hard to be consistent, if you remind yourself of the reward at the end, you can keep going. If you can win the 7-day self care challenge, you can win at life by becoming your own best friend and being truly self reliant and self sufficient.

BUSINESS/KEY PERSON LIFE INSURANCE

Y

ou’ve worked hard to set up your business and are committed to achieve long-term goals for you and your family. We understand that running a business involves consistent efforts of key persons, along with investment of substantial capital. Whether you are running a business on your own or with a partner, for successful accomplishment of your goals, you need to ensure that your builtup wealth should remain protected against any unforeseen circumstance such as death or disability. Here, Business Life Insurance can prove a valuable tool to cater to your future financial needs. Meaning of Business Life Insurance Business life insurance is a term or permanent life insurance policy purchased on the life of the key persons upon whom the stable operation of the business rests. These primary stakeholders include the owner, his partner and the key employees. Usefulness Business life insurance can prove to be an immensely useful resource to tackle various financial needs such as covering mortgage or business loan, providing funds to purchase a deceased partner’s interest and ensuring your family’s financial stability by keeping your assets intact for your loved ones. Moreover, like other life insurance policies, it also helps to meet your future needs such as supplementing your retirement income, providing funds for a business opportunity besides enabling you to buy your partner’s interest when they retire. The great feature of business life insurance is that it helps you to accumulate savings in a tax sheltered manner, and in case you are no more to take care of your loved ones, the funds pass over to your heirs or estate which they can use as per their financial needs such as final taxes and settlement costs. How does Buy Sell Insurance work?

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

For Buy Sell insurance, first, you need to get valuation of your business done by your accountant (CPA) or professional tax lawyer, and for the insurance; you need to get a buy-sell agreement through a tax lawyer. The insurance will work as a tool to protect your assets in case of any unforeseen circumstance. According to a predetermined formula, the business partners sell their shares to the company. In case one of the partners dies, the insurance company provides death benefit to the deceased partner’s beneficiary/heirs and in turn, the deceased partner’s heirs relinquish control to the surviving partners. Also, if there is a key employee who is very vital for the organization, your clients are dealing with him directly and an immediate replacement is not possible; to avoid stress and financial setback, you can purchase Key Person Insurance. This will help you cover the replacement costs in case your key employee passes away.

of both the partners and their families remains secured. While the deceased partner’s family will get the financial support for their required needs and will be saved from financial crisis, the surviving partner successfully manages to keep the business in operation for which both the partners had worked so hard to make it a success. As we can see, Business Life Insurance is an extremely vital tool to safeguard the wealth of the company owners who have worked hard to build up their dream venture. So it’s vital that if you own a company alone or with a partner, save your wealth with the help of

Let us understand the concept with the help of an example. A company ABC having market value of $2 million is owned by two partners X and Y both aged 35 years. Both of them are non-smokers and healthy. They have purchased $2 million, 20-year Term Business, Joint Life First-todie Insurance with company as the beneficiary; and pay approximately $185 premium per month. We do pray that they remain in the best of their health. But God forbid, if X dies, the death benefit of $2 million will pass over to the company, who will pay the surviving spouse of X; and the other surviving partner Y will purchase the shares of the deceased partner X. The surviving partner will not face any financial hassle and won’t have any guilt regarding the spouse of his deceased partner; as probably, it may not be easy to get along with the spouse of his partner since she may not have any understanding of the business. Australian fires: Everything we know about the crisis

huge infernos. What is the connection to climate change?

B

ushfires have been ravaging the country for months, devastating towns, rural communities and livelihoods. Australia is facing an unprecedented national crisis, as bushfires tear through rural communities across the nation. Since September 2019, many lives have been lost and more than 2,000 homes have been destroyed. The scale of the threat is immense, and fires continue to burn, with authorities calling for people to evacuate their homes. Eerily, the bushfire season has just begun and Australia is bracing for continuous weeks of catastrophic danger. Here’s what we know about the ongoing fires and how you can help from Australia or afar.

What caused the fires? This is a complex question. Australia is a continent familiar with bushfires, bushfire management and the importance of fires in regenerating the land. The indigenous people who have lived across the island continent for tens of thousands of years have long known the importance of fire management and how it contributes to the health of ecosystems. Bushfires are a well-understood threat, but the

12

FEBRUARY 2020

fires now burning across the nation have been described as “unprecedented” in their ferocity and scale. Fires can start in a number of ways -- from carelessly discarded cigarettes to lightning strikes and arson -- but they’re fueled by a dizzying amount of factors. A lack of rain and low soil moisture can help enable small fires to grow in size, and coupled with the high temperatures and fierce winds that Australia has experienced in the last few months, these small fires can become

A greenhouse gas cannot start a fire on its own. Bushfires aren’t started by climate change, but they are exacerbated by the effects of global warming. The Climate Council, an independent, community-funded climate organization, suggests bushfire conditions are now more dangerous than they were in the past, with longer bushfire seasons, drought, drier fuels and soils and record-breaking heat. The link between bushfires and climate change has become a political football, but experts agree climate change explains the unprecedented nature of the current crisis. Notably, Australia experienced its hottest year on record in 2019, climbing 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than the average, according to a report by the Bureau of Meteorology. Rising temperatures increase the risk of bushfire, and in November, Sydney experienced a catastrophic fire danger for the first time ever. There is also a horrifying feedback loop that occurs when great swaths of land are ablaze, a fact the globe grappled with during the Amazon fires of 2019. Bushfires release carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. The gas, which makes up only a small percentage of the total gases in the atmosphere, is exceptionally good at trapping heat. In just

three months, Australia’s fires are estimated to have released 350 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. Experts warn a century or more will be needed to absorb the carbon dioxide released. What areas are affected? Fires are raging in every state, with some of the greatest conflagrations in NSW and Victoria. The Gospers Mountains fires, in NSW, have burned over half a million hectares, and scientists suggest it could be the largest single-ignition point fire in Australia’s history. The total area that’s been burned is rapidly approaching 8 million hectares (almost 20 million acres). That’s almost ten times the amount of burnt area the Amazon experienced in 2019 and about three times the amount burnt in California’s 2018 wildfires. When will they end? Another complex question. Predictions suggest they will stretch well into 2020. After all, Australia is only one month through summer and dry, hot conditions persist through March and April. Much-needed rain, which would help alleviate some of the uncontrolled blazes, is still forecast to be months away. How can I help? Donations can be made to several organizations working toward victim relief and recovery, including the Australian Red Cross, Salvation Army Australia, the NSW Rural Fire Service, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society Australia. You can also help the devastated animal population by giving to wildlife rescue and treatment groups like WIRES, the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, and Currumbin Wildlife Hospital. - With inputs from CNET.

“Gone Are The Days at JIFF”

J

aipur International Film Festival, also referred to as “JIFF”, ran a five day course from January 17 21, 2020 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The festival showcased selected films and documentaries, which were chosen based on the aim of revolutionizing the style of filming for the beginning of a new era. Dr. Hakam Bhullar, a local veterinarian practicing in the Lower Mainland of Vancouver, is known to have battled a decade long humans rights case with fellow IndoCanadian veterinarians against the BCVMA. A documentary, “Gone Are The Days”, displaying the struggles and conflicts of the case, filmed and directed by Paul R. Dhillon, was among the handful of selected documentaries chosen for the festival. At the festival, during the closing ceremony, it was awarded the second best documentary film out of over 240 films selected overall for the festival’s viewing.

Upon entering the opening ceremony, located at GT Bazaar INOX Theater in Jaipur, traditional garlands of various flowers and red pigmented sindoor tilak with rice was placed at the center of the forehead. Several traditionally dressed welcomers greeted each guest with love and respect while guided onto the red carpet event. Major stars like: Prem Chopra, a noted film actor; and, TP Aggarwal, a Bollywood film director and producer, were present amongst others. Participants and guests arrived from all over the world to view the festival, such as: Germany, Poland, USA, France, China, Japan, Canada, etc. The following three days of the festival were scheduled between two locations of the GT Bazaar INOX Theater and Amer Clarks Conference Hotel. Panels were held with well known directors, actors, producers and lyricists throughout the middle days with question/answer assemblies

taking place. Cocktail hours were provided and dinner was served in a grand buffet style by the pool side. Luxury buses and shuttles were provided by Amer Clarks Hotel to the theater location for viewing times of the short films and documentaries. After every viewing, members involved with the film were seated for a panelled question and answer section from audience members. When viewing this documentary, as a young generation veterinarian myself, I was brought to tears seeing the struggles of others in this situation of injustice. The blood and sweat that was put into fighting against racism in this age and day was inspiring, yet terrifying as well. To imagine that there are still those who carry such ignorant and constricting values and beliefs towards not only their colleagues but any other human being was disgusting and disheartening to witness to the core. The theater was full during the viewing, and sniffles were heard throughout. Viewers of the documentary were engaged in a roller coaster of emotions as the real life heart aches of fellow veterinarians was seen on the big screen. As a younger generation vet, I am so immensely proud of the work these vets put in towards creating a brighter future for vets such as myself. On the final night, the red carpet closing ceremony was conducted at INOX Theater. Awards were handed out for participation and category winners, from which Dr. Bhullar and his fellow veterinarians’ documentary was awarded for displaying the struggles behind creating a revolutionary change for future generations to come. The documentary was commended for its realist approach and unique filming style. Overall the film festival was a great success and gave film makers and participants a platform to learn and showcase their talent for the world to see.

Concussion management

A

concussion is a traumatic brain injury that affects your brain function. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance and coordination. Concussions are usually caused by a blow to the head, violently shaking the head and upper body either in sports or during a motor vehicle accident. Some concussions cause you to lose consciousness, but most do not. It’s possible to have a concussion and not realize it. Most people usually recover fully after a concussion. Our concussion trained physiotherapist at MJ Physio completes an Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT). A thorough cortical, vestibular, and visual assessment will be completed for the concussion and post-concussion syndromes. We are experienced enough to recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion, second impact syndrome, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Based on the assessment findings, a step by step process for graduated stages of recovery is planned. We integrate cortical and vestibular rehabilitation into a comprehensive concussion management program. Our approach at MJ Physio for concussion management utilizes interdisciplinary approach and following a “Start-to-Finish Patient Management.” Krishna Jeeja (CEO MJ Physio)

The importance of compassion and empathy in life

T

he great Dalai Lama has said, ‘If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.’

Compassion is the awareness of other people’s distress and pain, and the motivation to go out of your own way to ease or soothe them. Empathy is the ability to understand what a person is experiencing and being sensitive to their feelings. Compassion and empathy are life skills that all human beings should possess, and cultivate better. These are the foundation for being a good human being, and having healthy and meaningful relationships. Here is why it is important to be compassionate and empathetic in life

1. It leads to improved happiness

Compassion and empathy begin with yourself, and require you to be kinder to yourself. When you excuse the mistakes and have your expectations within check, you are less likely to be disappointed in yourself or in others. By being more understanding of human actions and reactions, and what causes them, you pave the way for a happier life that is free of negativity and stress. 2. It promotes healthier relationships Those closest to us are subject to our highest expectations of them, which can often be unfair. Understanding the unique experiences of your near and dear ones makes you more sensitive to what they are going through, no matter how small. This allows you to offer more support and warmth to them which strengthens your bond and reminds them that they can always count on you to share their feelings and confide in you. 3. It leads to higher patient survival rates Those who have the kind sensibility to be nice to others and wish them the best also happen to receive the same positive wishes and vibes. Moreover, the attitude of

being grateful and wishing well for all those around oneself have helped many patients heal and recover quickly as they are able to retain the healthy mindset which is mandatory for any physical healing. 4. It improves social and interpersonal skills

improve quality of life for multiple people.

Being more compassionate and empathetic enables you to be a better listener and share honest advice. It also allows you to admit to your own shortcomings and be open to criticism. This makes you a more likeable person overall and people around you find it easier to communicate with you. It also makes you a credible source and a reliable friend. 5. It promotes better parenting Parenting has been done wrong for a really long time, and is not limited to raising a child but also includes assisting others in your life to grow out of unhealthy behavioral patterns and traumas. The qualities of compassion and empathy allow others to be honest with you, including young ones, and let you share the genuine advice you have for them instead of harsh judgements. In conclusion Being compassionate and empathetic is crucial to be a well adjusted person, after all there are several professions which are based entirely on the practice of these emotions. Therapists, social workers, educators for special people are all incredibly respected for these exact skills, and while no one is guaranteed to possess them by birth these amazing skills can be cultivated and practiced to

the people of the region. • To inculcate entrepreneurial spirit among the girls belonging to rural areas. Golden era of a nation is earmarked by the establishment of higher education traditions. Indian subcontinent emphasized on all encamping knowledge, creation and its transmission of higher education and created the then world renowned universities and educational centers like Takshila; Nalanda; Ujjain and Kashi. Recognizing this fact the strength of a society lies in all-round development of its youth, Sant Baba Bhag Singh Ji adopted flash rivulet devastated rural area of Jabbar/Manko (Jalandhar). Baba Ji taught people to identify their problems and then solve by self-help. Baba Ji carried forward the mission of “NIRMALA PANTH” which was developed by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the Tenth Guru of Sikhs. It was visualized that education and self-help are the transforming force for the upliftment of common man. To achieve this, foundation was laid to encourage education for excellence of human development, knowledge, culture, information, wellness and spiritualism. In this direction, a programme of “Girl Education” was initiated in 1954 with a view that girl education empowers the family and hence the society. To begin with,

the government schools of this area were helped by strengthening its infrastructure like classrooms and laboratories. But it was realized that quality education was going out of reach for the rural youth. Hence, this flash flood prone area was developed by building “Bridges and Roads” through self-help and full participation of local public. Further, to inculcate healthy culture in the rural youth, sports were also encouraged. In the year 2000, Sant Baba Bhag Singh Memorial Charitable Society (SBBSMCS) was established to achieve the vision and mission of Sant Baba Bhag Singh Ji for quality education in technical and professional streams in Doaba region of Punjab by producing students with excellence in academics, sports, human values and other extracurricular activities. It is the strong academic heritage of the Complex, and adherence to principles that has seen it growing from strength to strength in such a short span of time to be a duly Punjab Government enacted University in 2014 which has been included in UGC list of universities. It gives me immense pleasure to record that Sant Baba Bhag Singh University is considered as first Rural University of Punjab offering internationally recognized courses in all streams of education. The courses are so designed that one gets not only degree but skill certification too.

Dream Project of the revered saints of Dera Santpura Jabbar, Sant Baba Bhag Singh Ji, Sant Baba Hardyal Singh Musarfir Ji and Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji was realised by establishment of Sant Baba Bhag Singh University vide Punjab Government Act 6, 2015. The journey started with primary education then moved ahead to secondary education followed by higher education in form of Colleges, Institutes and finally the University. The Founder Chancellor of the University, Sant Baba Malkit Singh Ji had noble and great vision of providing higher education to the poor rural students of the area who could not afford to go to distant places for higher education in different programmes and worked for establishment of the University. The University offers wide range of programmes of studies with diversified options for professional programmes and growth in the field of Engineering, Management, Sciences, Humanities, Commerce, Education, Sports, Rural Development and Agriculture. The programmes vary from Short Term Courses to Doctorate Level Courses. The University endeavors to attract students by providing liberal fee concession, calm and pollution free environment and maintenance of proper discipline. I feel privileged to be a part of the “Lead Team” of this Unique University with firm commitment towards achieving excellence in all fields. If you aspire for quality education in drug free environment the Sant Baba Bhag Singh University is the right choice for you. It will be warm pleasure for us to welcome you to the University.

A

you need to know about arthritis susceptible to environmental factors that may trigger arthritis.

rthritis is the swelling and tenderness of one or more of your joints. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsen with age. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis causes cartilage — the hard, slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones where they form a joint — to break down. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease in which the immune system attacks the joints, beginning with the lining of joints. Uric acid crystals, which form when there’s too much uric acid in your blood, can cause gout. Infections or underlying disease, such as psoriasis or lupus, can cause other types of arthritis. Treatments vary depending on the type of arthritis. The main goals of arthritis treatments are to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

Symptoms The most common signs and symptoms of arthritis involve the joints. Depending on the type of arthritis you have, your signs and symptoms may include: • Pain • Stiffness • Swelling • Redness • Decreased range of motion Causes

24

• Age: The risk of many types of arthritis — including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout — increases with age. • Your sex: Women are more likely than men to develop rheumatoid arthritis, while most of the people who have gout, another type of arthritis, are men.

The two main types of arthritis — osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis — damage joints in different ways.

of the connective tissues that attach muscle to bone and hold the joint together. It also causes inflammation of the joint lining.

Osteoarthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis

The most common type of arthritis, osteoarthritis involves wear-and-tear damage to your joint’s cartilage — the hard, slick coating on the ends of bones where they form a joint. Cartilage cushions the ends of the bones and allows nearly frictionless joint motion, but enough damage can result in bone grinding directly on bone, which causes pain and restricted movement. This wear and tear can occur over many years, or it can be hastened by a joint injury or infection.

In rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks the lining of the joint capsule, a tough membrane that encloses all the joint parts. This lining (synovial membrane) becomes inflamed and swollen. The disease process can eventually destroy cartilage and bone within the joint.

Osteoarthritis also affects the entire joint. It causes changes in the bones and deterioration

Risk factors Risk factors for arthritis include: • Family history. Some types of arthritis run in families, so you may be more likely to develop arthritis if your parents or siblings have the disorder. Your genes can make you more

• Previous joint injury: People who have injured a joint, perhaps while playing a sport, are more likely to eventually develop arthritis in that joint. • Obesity: Carrying excess pounds puts stress on joints, particularly your knees, hips and spine. People with obesity have a higher risk of developing arthritis Complications Severe arthritis, particularly if it affects your hands or arms, can make it difficult for you to do daily tasks. Arthritis of weightbearing joints can keep you from walking comfortably or sitting up straight. In some cases, joints may become twisted and deformed. Spreading awareness with great cinematic experiences

Aashish Chanana

It is said that cinema is a very powerful medium of expression and if used in the right way, it can do wonders and one filmmaker is trying to make all the difference with his approach towards cinema.

A

native of Mumbai, India, and now living in Vancouver, Canada, Aashish Chanana is on a journey to offer people some great cinematic experiences. He is an acclaimed director, producer and actor who has not only tapped on the social issues through his films, but, he also creates cinema that hits the soul directly. For Aashish making a film is more like a form of expression. “When real life stories start to bother you (religious and spiritual conflicts - war crimes - the dangers of terrorism or the dark side of multiculturalism), how do you deal with them if you’re not a politician or a religious leader but simply a filmmaker? For me the right way is by morphing them into a story - a story that is about you and me and the world we live in. However, the challenge is to include the audience as one of my characters so that more people can relate to it,” he said. His film Afreen has won close to 50 Awards and nominations and he is often told that no film till date has won such a big number of awards.

With the support of Jay Minhas, we caught up with him and here’s what he has to say about his journey till now. EM: What according to you is more difficult, working on an idea and shaping it into a script or the post- production? AC: Honestly when you love what you do - nothing seems difficult. Nevertheless to say that Afreen was one of my most difficult films for various reasons but at the end of the day, I am happy I accomplished what I aimed for and overall enjoyed the process. Whenever I find difficulty in doing something, I remember that my mom always told me, for a Punjabi, nothing is impossible. EM: You don the hat of many personalities, you are a producer, a director as well as a CEO of an international production company, which one of these roles do you enjoy the most and why? AC: Like I said above, I enjoy the entire process of film making and I am passionate about all that I do - or else - I wouldn’t pursue it. But if I had to choose one, I’d say being a director, as a film is the director’s vision and there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing your vision come through ‘on screen’. EM: Why according to you is ‘cinema’ a powerful medium of expression? AC: To answer this question, I’d like to pose a vital question to you and to my readers, with context to my recent film Afreen: I hope this would answer your question. • Should the challenges and perils of international

26

FEBRUARY 2020

terrorism be solely in the hands of politicians? • Should we, the film artists of the world, sit aside in our enclaves and watch it all burn? • Such questions surely resonate with the worldwide filmmaking community and prompt the natural following question: Are we doing our utmost to change the world for the better, if only on the scale of a drop in the ocean? Cinema surely is a very powerful tool to provoke thoughts and channelize people’s minds to constructively do something to change this world into a more positive world. EM: If you had to choose an alternate career, what would that be? AC: I can’t think of any other profession honestly - maybe designing cars - but I don’t think any other would give me this kind of satisfaction. EM: How did the shift of interest happen from automobile engineering to producing films? Would you say it was a wise decision? AC: Way back in high school (Modern High School - Delhi) I designed the first electric car in India - I totally enjoyed the process and surely all the limelight that I got right after. But as I grew up I wanted to do more - I dabbled into acting, producing and finally directing movies. Being a filmmaker is what I would do now - hence - yes, was

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

definitely a wise decision. EM: Your upcoming film Emily is still in works, what goes behind writing and producing a story? What after a draft is ready? Does it take long to get to the final draft? AC: I’m sure every film maker works differently and I respect their craft. When it comes to me, I follow a longer process in the beginning as I like to drown myself, totally immerse my soul, my consciousness, my whole being into the emotions of the script.

am not looking for money or fame or awards – all I want is to save the life of one girl, one child, that has been wronged by these inhuman elements of our society. Most people think that human trafficking is not happening anywhere near us - they feel it could be in far away countries. Unfortunately, it’s happening rights here in North America and you and I need to do something about it - NOW!!! EM: Films like Afreen are very hard hitting in general. Do you focus on making films for a niche audience? Or your films are even suitable for the masses? AC: Absolutely masses - I feel

that’s the difference between my films and the others who make films on subjects like these - they make great documentaries which are for niche audiences, while I like to make films that entertain and in the process - I ‘soft sell’ the ‘core’. EM: Name a few of your personal favorite directors that inspire you? AC: Being originally from Bollywood, my favorite directors would always be - Yash Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Raj Kumar Hirani. In Hollywood, I like Steven Spielberg, Michael Bay, Ridley Scof, James Cameron and Ang Lee.

makers, writers and actors. AC: I’m an optimist - I believe in positivity and love. That’s what I give and that’s the ‘only’ energy I absorb. Being a good person is where you start and either ‘do good’ or do nothing at all. Anything you do, do it with your heart and you’ll achieve your goals! He signed off! Nikita Sharma Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

EM: Message for budding film

So to start with I need to find a connection, a reason or a motivation and once I have that, nothing can stop me – nothing. No money, no fear, no obstacle as that becomes my sole goal in life. So if you were to ask me what is my motivation for my next film Emily – it is a crusade against, ‘human traffickers’ - I

Bharti Singh

has ‘a lot of fun’ flirting with Bollywood stars

C

omedienne Bharti Singh is happily married to writer Haarsh Limbachiyaa, but she admits engaging in fun flirting with top stars like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar on screen.

In stage shows as well as TV projects, Bharti often indulges in harmless flirting with male celebrities. Asked if her husband has ever asked her to avoid the trait, Bharti told in an interview: “He knows that I am an artiste and I know my limit. I have never crossed the limit. It’s not like I am not getting any response from the front (celebrity). They all are senior to me. Be it Akshay Kumar or Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan, it is a lot of fun to flirt with them.” “Girls are jealous of me. They say that they

crave to get a glimpse of Salman and I go about kissing him!” she quipped. After sharing screen space in shows like “Khatra Khatra Khatra”, “Khatron Ke Khiladi” and “Nach Baliye”, the couple will soon host “India’s Best Dancer”. “We, as husband and wife, are excited to do something that is different from comedy. We are working together and having lots of fun. We are more like friends than husband and wife,” she said. “India’s Best Dancer” will replace the singingbased show “Indian Idol” on Sony Entertainment Television. “We are excited because ‘Indian Idol’ is about to be over getting over and our show will replace it. ‘Indian Idol’ is a hit show, so we are also a little scared (about replacing it),” said Bharti. Incidentally, the couple had appeared in an episode of “Indian Idol”, as guests. Will they do all upcoming shows together? “Absolutely. Whenever I get invited along with Haarsh, I get excited, otherwise ‘dil nahi lagta’,” she said. Source: IANS

Pooja Bhatt appeals to Bollywood T

to clean Film City

he glitz and glamour of Bollywood creates a dream world in front of our eyes, but what is the reality? Long after a film has been released, long after the sets have been de-constructed, broken pieces of the set remain scattered here and there turning the place into a mess. This is exactly what actor-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt has pointed a finger at. Pooja took to Twitter recently to express how the Film City in Mumbai’s Goregaon is turning into a mess. She suggested that instead of waiting for the authorities to intervene, people from the film industry should take an initiative to clean it.

She tweeted: “Film City is bustling with activity. Shame that it is in such a mess. Debris from sets long de-constructed lie everywhere. The access roads are nonexistent. Why can’t we film folk clean up after we create these imaginary worlds on camera? Authorities don’t seem to care. But we must.” Reacting to Pooja’s tweet, a user urged

Priyanka adds a Bollywood dash to new Jonas Brothers music video

A

ctress Priyanka Chopra has added a dash of Bollywood to the new music video that her popstar husband Nick Jonas has released along with his brothers.

In the video, “What a man gotta do”, Priyanka features with the other Jonas wives, Sophie Turner and Danielle Jonas. The three wives had also starred in the Jionas brothers’ 2019 music video, “Sucker”. Priyanka took to Instagram in January to share the latest video with her 48.4 million followers. “OUT NOW. #WhatAManGottaDoVideo @ nickjonas @jonasbrothers,” she captioned the post about the video in which singers and brothers Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas recreate classic films with their wives. Priyanka even posted a brief video from the shoot. “Always need me some Bollywood #gotthewindinmyhair,” she wrote. superstars Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn to do something to clean up film city which takes an even worse shape in the prolonged monsoon of Mumbai.

The tweet read: “Why authorities to blame, take it on your own. From these sets you earn millions of rupees and thrown debris everywhere. This stretch becomes worst in monsoon. Sir @SrBachchan @akshaykumar @ajaydevgn plz look into and start swachchta Abhiyan in FC Goregaon everyone will support u.” Another user suggested: “Bollywood must act as an organization. Should have a monitoring body which ensure such things to be done by without fail by the concerned film crew.” While several Bollywood stars take part in beach clean up drives every now and then in Mumbai, it is now to be seen whether they will take up an initiative to clean up Film City or not. Shilpa Shetty awarded Champion of Change Award

A

ctress and entrepreneur Shilpa Shetty Kundra and her husband businessman Raj Kundra have been awarded the Champion of Change 2019 Award for their efforts towards encouraging people to take up the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan. Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee handed the award to Shilpa on January 20 in New Delhi. “I am really honoured to receive this award and I feel it is every citizen’s duty to keep their country clean. Cleanliness starts from the mind. When we keep our homes clean, then why not our country? This year I have planted 480 trees to offset my entire carbon footprint. It’s every citizen’s responsibility to take care of our precious planet not just for the present but also our future,” she said. Nandan Jha, chairman of Interactive

Forum on Indian economy (IFIE), said: “We are happy to announce that Shilpa Shetty Kundra has been selected for the Champions Change of Award 2019 for her contribution in the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan.” Known has a yoga practitioner and health enthusiast, Shilpa said small changes in our daily life can bring about big changes in the cleanliness of the environment. “The first lifestyle change that I flick the switch off as soon as I leave the room. I’m extremely mindful of that. The general tendency is to wait for someone else to switch it off. Also, don’t leave the water running when you’re brushing your teeth. A lot of people do this unknowingly. They don’t realise that turning the tap off between brushing and gargling can save so much water. These little habits can bring about a huge change,” she said. In Bollywood, she has started shooting for “Hungama 2” and will also be seen in “Nikamma”. Source: IANS

Paul Walker’s car collection auctioned for $2.3 million

L

ate actor Paul Walker’s personal car collection has been sold for over $2.3 million at an auction.

A part of a Barrett-Jackson bidding event in Arizona, a total of 21 vehicles owned by Walker was sold for that whopping amount, reports aceshowbiz.com. The biggest collections came from an Alpine White 1995 BMW M3 Lightweight, which collected $385,000. It was one of five white BMW M3 Editions being sold, with the others bringing in between $220,000 to $258,500. The auction took place from January 15 to January 18. Other vehicles auctioned included a 2009 Nissan 370Z, which made an appearance in 2011’s “Fast Five” as well as a 1989 Nissan Skyline R32. Both the luxurious cars were sold for $105,600 and $100,100 respectively. Barrett-Jackson’s chairman and CEO Craig Jackson compared Walker to “Steve McQueen, who lived his passion for racing in every aspect of his life.” He added that the actor, who died at the age of 40 in a car accident back in 2013, “has inspired entire generations of car lovers.” “We worked closely with a close friend of Paul’s who helped care for Paul’s collection following his death; he was responsible for consigning and prepping the vehicles for the auction. Paul’s daughter, Meadow, kept a few vehicles she had a connection with.” The proceeds from the auction will go to Walker’s daughter, Meadow Rain’s trust. She currently manages the Paul Walker Foundation and has even launched a campaign to build a school for underprivileged children. Source: IANS

Charlize Theron’s

kids consider Oscar nomination ‘ waste of time’

A

ctress Charlize Theron’s children are not hopeful when it comes to her chances of victory at the 2020 Oscars.

Theron is nominated for the Best Actress prize for her role in “Bombshell” but, after already losing out at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards, her children aren’t getting their hopes up for success, reports aceshowbiz.com. “It’s been a thrilling couple of weeks. I was nominated for a Golden Globe. I was nominated for a Critics’ Choice...Spoiler alert: I didn’t win,” she told the US late night host Jimmy Kimmel. Theron shared that her children felt “a mixture of super sad and kind of angry” when they found out she lost at both awards shows. She said: “They were upset. The little one was like, ‘Well, I really wanted you to win,’ like angry, and my eight-year-old was just pure disappointment. So when the Oscar nominations came in, it was the third time that they were like... now they’re suspicious... “They’re just like, ‘Will you win this time?’ And I said, ‘You know, listen, there’s a good shot I’m probably not gonna win.’ And my oldest just went, ‘Well, this sounds like a waste of time’.” The 2020 Oscars take place on February 9, 2020 in Los Angeles. . A Girl in a Whirl Continued issue (Part 39)

The same topic we discussed in our class-discussion session. “A Love marriage is better.”, I said. “Then why do more than fifty per cent love marriages end up in divorces in North America? Prof. Virdi asked us. “I don’t think love marriages end up in divorces.”, I doubted. On checking from google, we found that 40% married people fail to celebrate their first marriage anniversary together. They remarry a new partner and get separated again soon. “Then, what’s the right way to find a right life partner?”, another student asked. “Many universities are doing research on this issue. But most surveys have failed to conclude what the right way is to find a right kind of life partner.”, Prof. Virdi said. “Sir, what do you think is the right way for to find a right life-prtner?”, I asked. “How many of you like to go to work seven days a week?”, Prof. Virdi asked and everybody answered negative. “Why not?”, Prof. Virdi continued. Somebody said he had to buy grocery. Someone said change was necessary. Somebody said a break of one or two days was necessary to kill the boredom. “Who likes to have the same dish

38

FEBRUARY 2020

every day?”, Prof. Virdi continued asking question. Again, everybody negated. “Why not?”, Prof. Virdi continued further. “One would be fed up eating the same dish daily.”, a girl replied. “This very trait of a man doesn’t let a person lead a stable and happy long married life. He or she gets bored with any place or anything after sometime. The same thing is true with life partners whether one has a love-marriage or an arranged-marriage.”, the teacher replied and continued. “One speaks unpleasant things to one’s partner sooner or later inadvertently, however deep love they may be in. This results in differences between them. The differences, if not handled tactfully, may snowball into full-blown controversies. Eventually, things may go out of control and lead to separations. Therefore, ignoring minor things can lead to big problems. I mean to say we people invite problems in our married life unwittingly, and we think we have got wrong life partners.”, Prof. Virdi answered very convincingly. Our class was over. My mind was teeming with new ideas. I talked to my parents in Ludhiana and told them that I had started my study further. They were happy for me. But Meenu told me that dad was very upset those days because

we had lost our court case of sixteen acres of our agricultural land at our village. Our family-rivals had snatched that piece of land from us fraudulently. Dad was sick of attending the court dates and especially after meeting injustice. Moreover, my mom had fallen sick. Her medical tests and medicines were costing a lot. Dad told that doctors sent him to a lab of their choice. They marked several tests with special marks on particular tests. Labs were charging money for all the tests, but actually doing only a few required ones. Most doctors and labs were hand in glove in looting gullible and helpless people. Corruption had become rampant in almost every department. Inflation had risen too much to break the backbone of poor. Dad really wished that they all would be in Canada as soon as possible. I was very upset to learn about dad and mom. I told dad that we had filed Meenu’s papers. Once she reached Canada, we would apply for all of them at the earliest.

‘Dolittle’: Visual

treat that lacks novelty

By: Vinayak Chakravorty/IANS Cast: Robert Downey Jr. Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Jim Broadbent, Jessie Buckley, Harry Collett, Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, John Cena, Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer, Tom Holand Direction: Stephen Gaghan Rating:** & 1/2 Director Stephen Gaghan’s “Dolittle” is a fantastical adventure based on the eponymous central character of a series of children’s books by Hugh Lofting.

Doctor Dolittle (Downey) is a physician who shuns human patients in favour of animals, with whom he can speak in their language. He later becomes a naturalist, using his abilities to speak with animals to better understand nature and the history of the world. Impressed with his work the Queen of England (Jessie Buckley) gives him a manor in the countryside, which he uses to house all sorts of animals from far and wide. Over the years, the good doctor falls in love with Lily (Kasia Smutnaik), an adventurous explorer, and together they have adventures around the world. But when Lily attempts to cross the ocean all alone, she perishes in a storm. Dolittle retreats from the world and squirrels away in his British countryside manor. His lush, palatial estate soon falls into disrepair, overgrown

42

FEBRUARY 2020

with vines and greenery that provide a protective layer to shut out human company. The narrative propels into high gear after the eccentric Dolittle’s life of solitude is interrupted by Tommy Stubbins (Harry Collett), a young man compelled to become an apprentice, and Lady Rose (Carmel Laniado), the Queen’s daughter, who lands up at the doctor’s place to request him to attend to the Queen who is presumably on her deathbed. A reluctant Dolittle agrees to attend to the Queen after realising that his stakes are high. He undertakes a treacherous journey along with Tommy Stubbins and his coterie of animals, to fetch the antidote that will save the Queen. During his journey he fends off a rogues’ gallery of good-for-nothings, including the devious palace doctor Dr, Blair Mudfly (Michael Sheen), the crooked Lord Thomas Badgley (Jim Broadbent) and the conniving King Rassouli (Antonio Banderas) who happens to be Lily’s father. The performances are noteworthy and enticing, including those who have lent their voices for the animated characters. They pump life into their characters with gusto.

On the production and technical front, the outcome is flawless. The frames are visually bright and colourful. Also, the film boasts of fine and cute collection of computer generated creatures that deliver heartening messages about psychological trauma, and yet it tests your patience with overly complicated noisy scenarios caused by Craig Alperts’ edits. Sometimes the cuts are ruthlessly

abrupt and at times many dialogues and momentous situations are drowned by Danny Elfman’s overbearing score. Overall, the problem with “Dolittle” is its story. The plot is elaborately formulaic, repetitive and predictable. There is no novelty factor in the gimmicks or in the period, set-up.

Book Review:

Dilip Kumar:

Examining a colossus that strode the screen It was this grounding that would stand Dilip Kumar in good stead in his early years in cinema and beyond.

What’s behind the everlasting appeal of cinema legend Dilip Kumar? The principle reasons “are related to the myths or legends which have enveloped and continue to camouflage the flesh-and-blood form of the multi-faceted persona of Yusuf Sarwar Khan, alias Dilip Kumar. Dilip Saheb has, on one hand, projected a disarming personality both on and off screen to endear him to the masses and, on the other hand, equally charmed them with the aura of mysterious shroud cleverly disguising the man behind the megastar,” a new book on the icon says. Profusely illustrated and meticulously researched, “Dilip Kumar - Peerless Icon Inspiring Generations” has been authored by the fatherdaughter duo of Trinetra Bajpai and Anshula Bajpai. One of the biggest factors catalyzing the myths behind the man was that he “directed his own historic growth and engineered his own excellence. He harnessed his penchant for perfection to develop the most complex acting technique and mastered the art of unmatched portrayal of characters and their emotions”, the authors write. The result was the creation of a wide range of portrayals of human emotions which are still etched in the minds of his fans. “Dilip Kumar in that sense became an actor who was ‘felt’ by the cinemagoers. His acting style had evolved into an emotional experience, an intellectual exercise and an aesthetic delight-all at the same time. He gave torment

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

a face; grief a voice; and emotion a depiction which was beyond the level of a fine art. Even today, Dilip Kumar is the idol and inspiration of every aspiring undergraduate of acting,” the book states. The other factor contributing to the creation of the myth was that in his public appearances, interactions and orations, Dilip Kumar “exuded sheer honesty of purpose and utter conviction of siding with the correct. The man’s appeal was charmingly magnetic in every sense of the term. The mass adulation generated by the superstar was equally honest, sincere and deepseated,” the authors write. The story of Dilip Kumar “reads like a novel of a bygone age. As a child, Yusuf was a mischievous but natural leader. In his school, the children fell into two groupsone led by brother Nasir, and the other by Yusuf. Initially, everyone would join Nasir’s group. But, Yusuf would be so boisterous-inventing all kinds of entertainment-that ultimately, he would win them all over”, the book says.

“Dilip Kumar’s histrionic triumphs exuded a prismatic emotive brilliance in very carefully chosen roles. Dilip Kumar created a myriad set of vividly cubistic portrayals of utterly credible onscreen characters and engineered his own growth beyond perfection. He had developed his own brand of complex histrionics while mastering the art of spectroscopic projection of emotions. He gave emotions a color and humour a rare subtlety, raising the level of acting to a fine art. He is the actor of actors who personified the yearnings, joys and sorrows of the people to exercise a magnetic command on and off screen,” the authors write. Spread over 13 chapters and an epilogue, the first two deal with Dilip Kumar’s early years and his evolution. Chapter three is divided into six sub-parts from the Formative Forties to The Climatic Nineties into the Millennium. Subsequent chapters deal with issues like The Films That were Not To Be, Dilip

Kumar and Saira Banu: A Match Made In Heaven, Dribbling With Directors, A Sharp Musical Ear and The Terrific Trio (Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoormistakenly named as Raj Kumar on page 301). The artist, the man an the megastar has left indelible footprints on the sands of time. To say in terms of cinema, this “Mughal-E-Azam (1960) of cinema has had a unique “Andaz” (1949) and his “Aan”(1952) as an actor remains unmatched till date. The “Kohinoor” (1960) of cinema ushered in a “Kranti” (1981) through his “Shakti (1982) and “Karma” (1986) of exceptional acting by playing everything under the sun, be “Ram Aur Shyam” (1967). The “Saudagar” (1991) of cinematic dreams will remain “Amar” (1954) in the cineverse,” the authors conclude.

Kangana: Being an actor a privileged job, directors aren’t valued

B

ollywood star Kangana Ranaut says being an actor is the most privileged job in our country while filmmakers are not as valued as they should be. Kangana’s observation came while she was commenting on the controversy that erupted when she took over the directorial reigns of her 2019 release, “Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi”. She was in Delhi to promote her upcoming film “Panga”, directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. “There was no ‘panga’. The director left the film (and) I completed it. It was just that. If I helped my producer (and) studio, toh us cheez ke liye mera sammaan hona chahiye (I should be revered for that). People should see I am so responsible. I got many brickbats and I am shocked,” she said. She then added: “I think being an actor on set is the most privileged job. (Being) a director, I am sorry to say, and even Ashwiny will agree with me, is not as valued as it should be. Filmmakers in our country, unlike America, are literally de-valued. This industry is of the actors.” Kangana also said that she wants to pursue her moviemaking ambitions. “There is a part of me that wants to pursue my filmmaking ambitions but if you ask me, it is a privilege to be an actor on the set -- epecially if your director is sorted,” she added. “Panga” also features Neena Gupta, Richa Chadha and Jassie Gill. The film, slated to hit screens on January 24, revolves around a kabaddi player, played by Kangana, who wants to make a comeback in the game after marriage and motherhood. Source: IANS

Justin Bieber ‘asked to leave’ exclusive gym

P alone.

op singer Justin Bieber was reportedly asked to leave an exclusive gym because singer Taylor Swift wanted to train

Bieber and Swift have had beef in the past. The “Blank Space” hitmaker hit out at Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, who’s the official owner of all of Swift’s masters of every album she’s made bar one, reports mirror.co.uk. Swift accused Braun of “bully-

ing”, with Bieber wading into the fray by sharing a photograph of him on FaceTime call with Braun and rapper Kanye West, captioning it: “Taylor swift what up.” Now it’s reported that Bieber, along with the others at gym were told they needed to leave as Swift had made an appointment. TMZ.com reported that Bieber’s entourage insisted he stay and finish his workout - with it said Bieber was

none the wiser that it was Swift who had booked it up. A source told MailOnline that the “Baby” hitmaker had arrived at the gym without an appointment, and that he was asked to leave the gym “because they had other appointments.” The source added: “It is a private gym so everyone has their own time slots.” Source: IANS

Make-up mistakes we often make M

ost of us barely have time to spend even 10 minutes on our make-up every morning. Hence, it is important that we utilize those precious minutes like a pro and fix those make-up mistakes without making too much of a mess. Here’s what you can do... •M ore often than not, we end up with clumps of mascara on our eyelashes, which can be a pain to remove. Instead of trying to immediately remove it, wait a minute or two till it is dry and then peel off. This will prevent smudging. •N ot all of us are blessed with thick, dark eyebrows and have to use eyebrow pencils/ mascaras to make them darker. But we often end up overpencilling. Correct this by using a small eyebrow brush to comb your brows and apply the tiniest bit of concealer on the browbone and just above your brows. •W e’ve all been guilty of applying too much of blush. Fix this by using a small sponge to gently remove the excess colour from the apples of your cheeks. Remember not to dab too hard or you might end up smudging the blush, making it appear even darker than before. Cortsey: Source: TNN www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS - FEBRUARY 2020 Manish Kumar Arora, 91-9871062000

Aries (March 21- April 20)

It would good for you to take up a creative hobby or go somewhere new to relax. You need to keep patience and tackle situations with your intellect and tact. Use your intuitive abilities, increase your spiritual awareness, investigate dreams and the occult.

Leo (Jul 23 - August 23)

Artistic and creative talents, their development are likely focus of this period. Several aspects of life require your active presence so you might feel drained often. You should make serious efforts to take out time for yourself as occasional periods of solitude would help you calm down and find a way out.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 21)

You acquit yourself with pride and may find yourself quite an enthusiastic entertainer or host. Cooperation, diplomacy, and sociable dispositions make this a fortunate period for friendships, organizations and group activities. Your capacity for enjoyment is enhanced, but overindulgence is almost impossible to avoid.

What's your #Astrology sign? Select your Astro sign and read below.

Taurus

(April 21- March 20)

Creative juices flow and romantic adventures move into the real world. Artistic energies can be grounded, for you are imaginative and even inspired. However, curb your physical aggression and beware the consequences of overindulgence and risky adventures. Overworking your brain would only lead to exhaustion.

Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 23)

Gemini

(May 21-Jun 21)

Your mental processes are energized. Filled with many new ideas, you have an urge to read more, gather all kinds of information and learn new things. You really need to communicate, as planning projects, attending meetings, running errands and taking short trips occupy all of your time.

Libra (September 24- October 23)

The desire to pursue higher education or advanced training is stimulated, as is the urge to speculate, take risks and be more daring. You become more outgoing and assertive when travelling abroad, or dealing with those of a different race or culture.

You can use or develop skills to make you more independent in financial and other ways. Increased determination and willpower make you more demanding and critical. Romance through a chance encounter, or a sudden infatuation is very much a possibility.

Capricorn

Aquarius

( December 22 - January 20)

Your imagination and creativity increase, so if your work or career is in a creative field, this can be a period of great success. Relationships and contacts with children may be greatly expanded. Romance can blossom and enhance the quality of your life.

(January 21 - February 18)

You are apt to be swamped with information and ideas. Travel and transportation are highlighted. The energy is good to develop new skills with machinery or computers. A powerful network of relationships can help you become happier and more successful as an individual.

Cancer (Jun 22- July 22)

This is a favourable period -- not just for the potential success of your efforts, but because they are likely to produce meaningful, long-lasting accomplishments. It is an auspicious time to initiate projects geared towards bringing benefits at a later time in your life.

Scorpio (Octo. 24-Nov. 22)

You should experience the highest inspirations, as well as the kind of dumb luck that comes from just being in the right place at the right time. The magic of illusion and imagination, enhanced spirituality, or investigating the paranormal can be enjoyable.

Pisces (February 19 March 20)

You may be inspired at this time to rescue or restore heirlooms. If you have been thinking about a new business venture or achieving some physical goal, this is a time when you are likely to put such plans in motion.
