Jobanpreet Singh

and I am really thankful for that,” he said.

tarted as a theatre artiste, Jobanpreet Singh, the lead actor of the recently released movie SAAK is on the way to carve his name amongst the biggest names of the Indian film industry. His dedication, relentless effort and never give in attitude has already helped him score a few Punjabi movies with some big names of Bollywood and Pollywood. However, he aspires not only to become a top-notch actor, but, also wants to produce some great cinematic experiences for the audience. Even though his journey in this field of gltiz and glamour is not so old, he has managed to grab credits for being an actor, writer, producer, and even a casting director. Jobanpreet began his journey with theatre (Rang Manch Rangnagri, Ludhiana) and his love for the craft grew stronger with time. His voyage into the film industry came through his love for theatre that he developed via his recruitment into Punjab Police. His popularity soon grew across Punjab as an actor that eventually led him to the promising and ever growing Punjabi Film industry. His stints include a role of an Assistant Production Manager in Dangal starring Aamir Khan, and other significant roles in Pollywood films Rupinder Gandhi 2 and Kande. He landed in a lead role opposite Mandy Takhar in the movie Saak, which was highly appreciated by the audience. His real passion and goal is to first make it big in his native Punjabi film industry before taking over other genres and regions. For Jobanpreet, sports, physical fitness and his craft are very much the core of his daily regimen as he prepares to climb the ladder of stardom in a growing and very competitive industry. A fitness enthusiast, he makes sure to indulge in any physical activity like running, cardio and weights training etc. whenever he can make time. He keeps himself busy as a casting director and line producer, having these tasks on several major productions. Hailing from a small hamlet called Kuhli Kalan in Punjab, he is the youngest in his family, and feels

For his fans and audience in India, Jobanpreet had a hard hitting message, he said, “I returned to India from Canada early in November and I was shocked to see the alarming levels of pollution in the cities”. “I would urge everyone to invest sometime whenever they can and plant trees. This is the need of the hour, as if we don’t have clean air to breathe, how are we going to sustain the entire ecosystem here?” He revealed that gardening is one of his favorite hobbies and he wants to make this planet greener and livable by his continuous efforts. that without the support of his family, he wouldn’t have achieved such heights in such little time. “I have a habit of putting in my heart and soul into everything I do. During my theatre days, my days used to commence at 5. I used to go for my theatre workshops and practice sessions at 6 and only returned home after a rigorous session of 4-5 hours,” said Jobanpreet. “The hard work I had put in for those 3 years is definitely paying back now”, he added. He will be seen in the upcoming film, Train to Bikaner which is being directed by Dapinder Sandhu.

Before bidding good bye, Jobanpreet mentioned his love for Canada and how he feels it is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. “I can’t pick any one place if someone would ask me. From Vancouver to Victoria, British Columbia and Edmonton, every place is surreal and beautiful beyond words. The love I get from everyone in Canada can’t be compared

He is also working on a film, Jehan Khelan which is based on the rigorous training and the life of a police recruit. When it comes to his future plans, the 30-year-old wants to focus on enhancing his skills and also aspires to work with Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir Khan.

How to remove

Confidence is key no matter what situation you are in, and sometimes it can be compromised due to little things about ourselves. Dark circles can be one such issue, and other than making us self conscious they can also make us look tired, unkempt, and uninterested. If you often find yourself fretting over your dark circles, here are some things you should try out to reduce them.

dark circles from under your eyes

1. Cool down with cucumbers Cucumbers are 90% water, they are pretty much the best eye pack since they are primarily hydrating, and have an excellent soothing and cooling effect on the eyes. Cut some slices and put them on closed eyes and try to catch a nap with the cooling sensation permeating into your eyes. The very fresh and light scent of cucumbers adds a mild element of aromatherapy which makes it a favourite of those who like to unwind with a cool treatment for the eyes. 2. Heavy hydration Dryness can cause certain parts of your body and skin to lose their healthy colour and get strange pigmentation. The solution is to use a

moisturizing face cream or lotion under your eyes at least twice a day and wait for about two weeks to see the result. Another great way to ensure proper hydration is to keep track of how much water you are drinking and making sure you drink at least 10 glasses a day. 3. 8 hours, no less There is no alternative to getting a truly fulfilling eight hours of sleep every night. Understandably, this sleep is much harder to get than to talk about. However, you should aim to get as much uninterrupted sleep as possible every night, and thereby fix your sleeping cycle. The efficacy of this no-brainer trick will be visible in as little as four days. While other little tricks can assist you in dealing with

the issue of dark circles, getting proper sleep is a non-negotiable starting point. 4. Try an under-eye cream In case you are plagued by really deep dark circles and puffy eyes, you may want to consult a physician who can closely look into your body chemistry and lifestyle in order to analyse why you may have such a condition. Try a medicated under eye cream that is heavy on hydration and non-blocking minerals and see if that helps with your condition.

like tomato that is rich in antioxidants and gently lay it on your eyes for at least 15 minutes as you relax and unwind. Alternately, you can do this with tea bags of green tea soaked in cold water and let the high antioxidant content seep into your under eye area to brighten it. Remember that human bodies are beautiful and complex, and when you cannot treat an issue by yourself always get proper medical assistance. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the first step towards ensuring you are free of emotional and physiological stress.

5. Cold compresses Cold compresses can help greatly relieve stress and when you do it with the right apparatus, it is excellent for your dark circles as well. Use a fruit

Some provinces offer their own Grant programs in addition to CESG. The federal and provincial governments contribute the grants directly into the RESP, and these additions within your contribution can significantly increase your savings.

Who can open RESP? Parents, grandparents, maternal uncle, paternal uncle, maternal aunt and friends. Anybody can open RESP account for a child, and the same child can be the beneficiary of multiple RESPs. Who can be the named beneficiary? You can name any child as your beneficiary and you don’t need to be related to the child. After the plan comes into force, you still have the option to change the beneficiary. As per the age of the new beneficiary, you can continue contribution within the duration of the policy. How much money can you save? Diabetes Mellitus and its effects on your pet

I

n this month’s issue, we want to discuss with you the details pertaining to what happens when your dog is diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus. Before we dive into what you should be aware of in regards to this disease, let’s first discuss what it really is! This condition is related to an important organ in the body, known as the pancreas. This organ is responsible for creating cells that aid in making ‘Insulin’, a hormone; and, also to help your pet sufficiently digest his food. Therefore, when this condition occurs and affects the pancreas, your pet is unable to effectively regulate this hormone, insulin, in his or her body. As you read this title, you may be wondering, “Is my dog’s Diabetes the same that occurs in humans?” The answer to this is ‘yes’, there are many similarities.

One of the major signs you will see occur in your pet is weight loss, while still having a huge appetite. Insulin is needed in the body, because it helps regulate glucose into cells. Glucose serves as a source of energy to these cells. However, when insulin is not doing its job correctly, then glucose enters the blood stream instead of the cells. When your pet has high amounts of glucose sitting in his blood stream, he is then prone to events that can be very life-threatening, if not managed properly. Since the low insulin is causing his cells to feel deprived of glucose, these cells then need to find a different source of energy to carry out their functions adequately. They begin to target fat and protein, in the body, in order to compensate for their loss. This results in your dog experiencing weight loss, while having a huge appetite still! The dog then begins to pee out his extra glucose and thus, feels the need to drink more water too. Therefore, the major signs you will notice in your dog are: urinating frequently, drinking a lot of water, weight loss and increased appetite. If you feel that you have seen these signs occur in your pet, please take him or her to your local veterinarian immediately. It is not possible for your furry friends to regulate their body’s glucose without proper treatment being applied. When you bring your pet to their veterinarian, three major components will be taken into consideration, in order to determine if Diabetes Mellitus is the condition being dealt with. Do the clinical signs being experienced match with the case profile? Is there glucose

14

DECEMBER 2019

measured in the dog’s urine? Does the dog display high levels of glucose in his blood consistently? If all three answers are ‘yes’, then an appropriate management and treatment plan will be set into place. Treatment and management will consist of ensuring that your dog is being given his medication on time; he receives adequate amounts of exercise, as needed; he is living a lifestyle that is stress-free; and, that he is being appropriately fed with a special diet plan that suits his needs. This diet plan normally consists of giving food that is high in protein and fiber. However, this may depend on every individual case, concerning other medical history in the patient. Your veterinarian will discuss all options accordingly and present the best plan in your pet’s favor. A common treatment plan includes giving your pet injections of insulin at home. Information on the method of doing so and how to properly administer such a treatment will always be provided by your veterinarian. Dr. Hakam Bhullar (DVM)

The hottest Winter Fashion trends from head to toe

A

s the runways have revealed the best of fashion, the hottest winter trends are quickly making their way to racks and hangers at stores. To make the best choices and pick out the hottest trends of this season, here is a guide to tell you what is ruling the world of fashion in the fall and winter of 2019.

1. Puff up those shoulders Puffed powder shoulders and sleeves that are bold and extravagant reel in an element of confidence that you can never say no to. This trend can be embraced in any way, on

shirts, dresses, or on statement making blazers and jackets. Try this trend with some bright colours, especially bright yellow, which was also a hit this season. 2. The bigger the bag, the better Thanks to the popularity of tote bags in the last couple of years, the favoured types of bags are shifting from the smaller ones to big bags. These range from jumbo size hand bags to huge totes to also gym style duffel bags. Find the best match to your outfit and get strutting. 3. Show some skin (on the ankles) As the days and nights get colder, we often cover ourselves completely from head to toe, and for the right reasons. But the catwalks have inspired all of us to show some ankles by wearing hemlines on outfits, ranging from skirts to pants. This creates a very

18

DECEMBER 2019

graceful and elegant look, and you have to try it for your next dinner party! 4. Cosy up with the capes The retro vibe in latest trends has been undeniable, and this trend plays on the vintage vibe heavily by introducing rug like capes that keep you warm while giving your body a unique silhouette of straight lines. If you are looking for a new coat this season, our recommendation would be to switch to a cape altogether. 5. Need more neutrals Neutral colours like beige, nude, mild browns, and all their stunning varied shades are once again the talk of the town: but to do it right there is a catch. To do the neutral look, you have to commit to it entirely and only wear shades of neutral beige. So, have some fun and play around with different shades and tints of the same colour. 6. Sequins in the sequence

some sequinstudded attires in your rotation. The runways showed us the way and now the streets have caught up, sequins are the best way to brighten up the winters that can sometimes get lazy and boring. Jazz up simple outfits with a statement piece full of shiny sequins, or find yourself a bold showstopper piece. 7. Hotter with the headgear Hats and caps and scarves are all mandatory to finish your look this season because balance is key, and your look should be well put together and coordinated from head to toe. You can either go the basic chic route and coordinate your headgear, and if you want to be experimental you can make it the statement piece of your look. While the trends are always here to guide you, fashion is always personal and intuitive. Jazz up every trend with your personal style, and always express yourself with your clothing choices.

Joy to the

worldChristmas is here! Christmas is one of the biggest festivals celebrated across the globe by millions of people with great fervor. It is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration.

W

e’re all for snow days and cuddling up with loved ones by the fire, but the month of December is also prime time for traveling—mainly to see how the rest of the world celebrates Christmas. These cities are worth a visit any time of year, sure, but they seem to be exceptionally magical during the holiday season. Whether they’re European classics with storybook Christmas markets, Asian cities where you can see twinkling lights from a rooftop pool, or ski paradises right here in Canada or the U.S., some celebrations are worth the price of a plane ticket. From Cologne to Cape Town, here are the best places to spend Christmas this year. Cape Town, South Africa Why we go: If you’re looking to escape winter this Christmas, you can’t do much better than Cape Town—

22

DECEMBER 2019

it’s summer in the Southern Hemisphere, after all. You can even visit one (or several) of the South African city’s holiday markets without having to wear a coat and scarf. This one thing will really get you in the spirit: An outdoor screening of Home Alone at the beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on Christmas Day at 8:30 p.m. Quebec City, Canada Why we go: Quebec City is one of the oldest cities in Canada, and its colonial French architecture gives it an unmistakably European feel. The cobbled streets of the Old Town are packed with quaint shops and delicious bistros, all merrily decorated for the holidays. This one thing will really get you in the spirit: The toboggan run at Château Frontenac (open from mid-December to March), one of the city’s oldest traditions—and quite the thrill. Zoom down icy tracks overlooking the city on a wooden sled reaching

speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. Rovaniemi, Finland Why we go: Hugging the Arctic Circle, Finland’s Lapland region is the birthplace and home of Santa Claus. In the city of Rovaniemi, Santa Claus Village amusement park and resort creates an unforgettable Christmas experience for children with snow-covered cottages, reindeer rides, and a friendly staff dressed as elves who refuse to break character. This one thing will really get you in the spirit: An evening snowmobile trip to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights overhead (we recommend the Rovaniemi

Adventure program through Off the Map Travel). Sydney, Australia Why we go: You haven’t seen Christmas lights until you’ve seen Sydney’s Christmas lights. Plus, the holiday season lasts an entire month here (take that, 12 days of Christmas) with “Sydney Christmas,” an aptlynamed festival taking place from November 24 through December 25. The citywide celebration kicked off this year with a tree lighting at Martin Place, and continues with Christmas markets and nightly concerts. This one thing will really get you in the spirit: The 94,000 twinkling LEDs at the incredible Pitt Street Mall Boulevard of Light. Kennebunkport, Maine Why we go: Every December, this tiny New England town bursts with holiday cheer

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

during its annual Christmas Prelude, an 11day bash that’s about as New England as it gets (I mean, one of the main attractions is a tree made of lobster traps). The lobster rolls at The Clam Shack—considered to be some of the best rolls in Maine—will make you forget about gingerbread and sugar plums altogether. This one thing will really get you in the spirit: Santa Claus arriving to the Christmas Prelude on a lobster boat. (This year’s arrival already occurred on November 29, but the festival lasts until December 9.) Prague, Czech Republic Why we go: The Christmas markets in Prague are some of the best in the world and run a full month, with locals and travelers passing through for a dose of mulled wine, sticky pastries, and roasted ham. The main markets take place in the Old Town and Wenceslas squares, just five

Bruges,Belgium

minutes apart by foot—and set to the backdrop of some of the prettiest Gothic architecture you’ll ever see. This one thing will really get you in the spirit: The annual performance of The Nutcracker at the National Theater. Tokyo, Japan Why we go: The city turns the voltage up each year with its winter illuminations, with different districts competing with each other to create some truly sensational displays. This year’s illuminations include over 100,000 twinkly blue and silver lights at Tokyo Midtown and a massive Baccarat crystal chandelier at Yebisu Garden Place. And don’t worry if you can’t get there before December 25—the winter illuminations have become so popular that most remain up until February. This one thing will really get you in the spirit: The Blue Cavern (“Ao no Dokutsu”) illumination in Shibuya, an electric version of the blue grottos found in the Mediterranean.

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Why we go: Europe’s best-preserved medieval city oozes charm year-round, but is especially charming during the holidays. It’s hard to imagine a place more magical as you wander the cobblestone streets, admire the shimmering lights, and warm up with mugs of Belgian hot chocolate in cafes. This one thing will really get you in the spirit: Ice skating with someone special at the picture-perfect ice rink, located near the downtown Christmas market. Reykjavík, Iceland Why we go: Reykjavík shines on the streets and in the sky in December. Strings of glinting Christmas bulbs illuminate the city during its very long nights; and on the clearest evenings, the Northern Lights can be seen from the city’s darker streets. This one thing will really get you in the spirit: The 13 Yule Lads, a group of holiday trolls you’ll see about town who are—in local folklore— Iceland’s equivalent to Santa Claus (and have actually been around a lot longer than St. Nick).

Rome, Italy Why we go: The streets around town will be festively alight, sure, but the home to the seat of Catholicism is an excellent option for folks seeking a more sacrosanct Christmas experience. This one thing will really get you in the spirit: Midnight mass at the Pantheon, where you can hear hymns echoing off the walls of the 1,900-year-old architectural marvel. New York City Why we go: There’s no shortage of ways to make your New York City Christmas magical, whether it’s ice skating at Rockefeller Center, carriage rides through Central Park, or lurking around 34th street hoping to witness a miracle. “Overcome with sheer gratitude. @ deepikapadukone,” Ranveer captioned the image.

The film is an Indian remake of Tom Hanks’ 1994 classic “Forrest Gump”. In the Hollywood film, there is a scene where Hanks’ character is sitting on a bench. It seems Aamir wants Shah Rukh and Salman for the scene. “He is very keen to have a special appearance from the two. While Shah Rukh has agreed, Salman is yet to give his consent,” a source told BollywoodLife. Aamir is playing the role of a Punjabi for which he has undergone a physical change. Vaping: The good, bad and the ugly

Cont. from previous edition.

Why should I quit? Wanting to be the best, healthiest version of yourself is an important reason to quit vaping.

Others include: Unknown health effects: The long-term health consequences of vaping are not known. Recent studies report serious lung damage in people who vape, and even some deaths. Addiction: Addiction in the growing brain may set up pathways for later addiction to other substances. Brain risks: Nicotine affects your brain development. This can make it harder to learn and concentrate. Some of the brain changes are permanent and can affect your mood and ability to control your impulses as an adult. Use of other tobacco products: Studies show that vaping makes it more likely that someone will try other tobacco products, like regular cigarettes, cigars, hookahs Toxins (poisons): The vapor made from e-cigarettes is not made of water. The vapor contains harmful chemicals and very fine particles that are inhaled into the lungs and exhaled into the environment. Sports: You want to do your best in sports, and vaping may lead to lung inflammation (irritation). Money: Vaping is

www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

expensive! The cost of the cartridges over time starts to add up. Instead, you could spend that money on other things you need or enjoy. To go against tobacco company advertising: Many e-cigarettes are made by the same companies that produce regular cigarettes. Their marketing targets young people by making fun flavors for e-cigarettes and showing young, healthy people vaping and showing it as if it’s a trend that you must indulge in. They’re trying to make you into their new, lifetime customer.

How can I quit? 4 Decide why you want to quit and write it down or put it in your phone. Look at the reason(s) when you feel the urge to vape. 4 Pick a day to stop vaping. Put it on the calendar and tell supportive friends and family that you’re quitting on that day. 4Get rid of all vaping supplies. 4 Download tools (such as apps and texting programs)

to your phone that can help with cravings and give encouragement while you try

to stop vaping. 4Understand withdrawal. Nicotine addiction leads to very strong cravings for nicotine. It can also lead to: 4Headache 4Feeling tired, cranky, angry, or depressed 4Trouble concentrating 4Trouble sleeping 4Hunger 4Restlessness The signs of withdrawal are strongest in the first few days after stopping. They get better over the following days and weeks. Get rid of feelings, people, and places that make you want to vape. These are called triggers. If possible, avoid places and people that trigger the urge to vape. If you feel the urge to vape, try these things instead: 4Chew sugar-free gum or drink water. 4 Text, call or hang out with a friend who will support you. 4Listen to your favorite playlist. 4Go for a walk or jog. 4Try Meditation / yoga 4Take 10 deep breaths. 4Keep your hands busy with a hobby, like drawing or making jewelry. 4Go somewhere where no one smokes Consult your health care provider for further information and help.

Mr. Bachchan was surprised with the good work we have been doing educating more than thirty thousand ‘adivasi’ children as it is one of the most important things for an individual to grow.” Meanwhile, Taapsee is enjoying the success of her latest film “Saand Ki Aankh”, which is based on the lives of India’s oldest sharpshooters Chandro Tomar and Prakashi Tomar. ctress Yami Gautam, who has given a string of hits like “Vicky Donor”, “Kaabil”, “Uri: The Surgical Strike” and “Bala”, is very happy the way her career has shaped up and says it is not easy to be in Bollywood and be self made and make it on your own. Asked how does the brush with stardom feels like, Yami told in an interview: “I am aware of how I feel evolved as an actor... There’s ‘Vicky Donor’, ‘Badlapur’, ‘Kaabil’ and Sarkaar, it did not do well but it will still be a special film because of Amitabh Bachchan, then ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ and now ‘Bala’.” “Of course, I feel evolved

apper Badshah made his acting debut this year and he says now he has newfound respect for filmmakers and

Although the film “Khandaani Shafakhana”, which marked his debut as an actor, failed to create fireworks at the box office, his experience of working on it will “always be one of the biggest learning experiences of my life”. “I was lucky to be part of a tremendous team who were more of friends and made me feel very comfortable with what I was doing. It was amazing to be among such hardworking people as Sonakshi (Sinha). Playing Gabru was both, difficult and easy for me because I had seen so many Punjabi pop stars while growing up and I already had a character lay out in mind,” he said. “It was while executing it in front of the camera, with his own nuances and then the complete transition in the last courtroom scene, was the challenge,” he added. His co-star Sonakshi had played a “very important role” in helping him

decide and go ahead with the film. “She read the script first and had recommended my name. When I spoke to her, she made me go for it. I did not have to prepare much for the role. I had a certain image of Gabru in my mind from the moment I heard the script and I was just going with the flow. I definitely have a lot of newfound respect for filmmakers and actors after this experience. I think the whole process was a lot of fun,” said Badshah. “Khandaani Shafakhana” aired on Sony MAX on November 22. Source: IANS

ctor Ayushmann Khurrana’s “Dream Girl” will release in Hong Kong on December 5.

Zee Studios International, who distributed the film globally earlier this year, has partnered with MM2 to release the film in Hong Kong. In “Dream Girl”, a comedy drama directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa, Ayushmann played the role of a man with the talent of impersonating a woman’s voice. The comedy drama is coproduced by Ekta Kapoor, and also features Nushrat Bharucha

and Annu Kapoor. On taking the film to Hong Kong, Vibha Chopra, Head-Global Syndication & International Film Distribution, Zee Entertainment, said: “The quirky tale of ‘Dream Girl’ transcends boundaries! A film that has emerged to be one of the biggest entertainers of the year marks 5th Bollywood release in this non-traditional market after ‘Barfi’, ‘Dangal’, ‘Secret Superstar’ and ‘Hichki’. It’s always a great feeling to take such films to the unconventional territories and witness the diaspora’s reaction towards this film.” Source: IANS

Dwayne Johnson

set for superhero debut as ‘Black Adam’ in 2021

A

fter years of development, actor Dwayne Johnson says he will start filming “Black Adam” in 2020, adding he is elated that his superhero dream is turning into a reality.

Black Adam is Shazam’s arch-nemesis and a complex anti-hero with a rich history of his own. The film based on the DC villain will open on December 22, 2021, days after “Avatar 2” releases on December 17. Johnson announced the film’s release date on Thursday, reports hollywoodreporter. “Like most kids growing up, I dreamed about being a superhero. Having cool superpowers, fighting for what’s right and always protecting the people. It all changed for me, when I was 10 years old and was first introduced to the greatest superhero of all time - ‘Superman’. As a kid, Superman was the hero I always wanted to be. But, a few years into my fantasy, I realised that Superman was the hero, I could never be,” Johnson wrote on Instagram. He continued: “I was too rebellious. Too rambunctious. Too resistant to convention and authority. Despite my troubles, I was still a good kid with a good heart -- I just liked to do things my way. Now, years later as a man, with the same DNA I had as a kid -- my superhero dreams have come true. I’m honored to join the iconic #DCUniverse and it’s a true pleasure to become, ‘Black Adam’. ‘Black Adam’ is blessed by magic with the powers equal to Superman, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line. This role is unlike any other I’ve ever played in my career and I’m grateful to the bone we’ll all go on this journey together.” The New Line film will reunite Johnson with his “Jungle Cruise” director Jaume Collet-Serra and is a spinoff of Warner Bros. and New Line’s “Shazam!”, Zachary Levi’s superhero film that opened in April. Clive Owen to play Bill Clinton in ‘Impeachment: American Crime Story’

O

scarnominated actor Clive Owen will star as Bill Clinton in “Impeachment: American Crime Story”, the third season of the network FXs award-winning limited series franchise, which centers on the sex scandal that rocked the Clinton presidency. Owen joins Sarah Paulson, who will play Linda Tripp, Beanie Feldstein, who will play Monica Lewinsky, and Annaleigh Ashford, who will play Paula Jones in the limited series, reports aceshowbiz.com. The role of Hillary Clinton is currently being cast. “Impeachment...” is written by Sarah Burgess who executive produces alongside returning ACS team Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, Alexis Martin Woodall and Paulson. Feldstein, Henrietta Conrad and Jemima Khan are also producing. The limited series is based on Jeffrey Toobin’s bestselling book “A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President”. Toobin’s 1997 book The Run of His Life: The People v. O. J. Simpson served as the source material for Season 1 of American Crime Story. Filming on “Impeachment” is set to begin in late March. The limited series is currently slated to premiere on Sunday, September 27, 2020, about a month out from the next US Presidential election, but Murphy recently indicated the date may be in flux as the filming schedule has changed.

Owen’s casting comes in the midst of the impeachment hearing against President Donald Trump. Despite the confluence of events, the current impeachment proceedings are not influencing “Impeachment: ACS”, which chronicles events from two decades ago. Owen received an Oscar nomination for “Closer” and was most recently seen in “Gemini Man”. On TV, he headlined “The Knick” and will also star opposite Julianne Moore in the limited series “Lisey’s Story”. Source: IANS

Important to play an attacking game as opener in T20s:

Dhawan The first six overs in a T20 game is considered the most crucial as both the batting and bowling team look to grab early advantage and with the World T20 in Australia less than a year away, India opener Shikhar Dhawan is very clear that for him it will be all about attacking from the word go Down Under.

S

peaking in an interview, Dhawan said that even as every team and every individual is playing with an eye on the showpiece event, he doesn’t really have any special plan. All he wants to do is keep it simple and start on the attack before settling down and providing the middle order the perfect platform to finish with a flourish. “The plan is to play a nice attacking game as an opener in the first six overs and build a good total. I like to play aggressive and if some wicket is slow or if the ball is stopping on it, then obviously the plan changes accordingly. If we can manage to get say 50-55 runs in the first six overs, then the momentum is there for a good finish. My job will be to primarily start well and then score big. Smart and attacking game is my mantra for the T20 format,” he smiled. Asked if it will be about one between him and Rohit Sharma playing anchor as the other attacks, Dhawan answered in the negative. “Play as per the situation. If some day Rohit is attacking and I am not being able to connect well, then that is different. But otherwise, I don’t believe that only one batsman can attack. If your game is to attack, then you must stay natural. Also, when you attack from both sides then the pressure is on the opposition,” he explained.

36

DECEMBER 2019

A big area of concern in recent times has been the amount of focus on the young Rishabh Pant and the India opener believes that it is all about staying away from the glare and focusing on the job at hand. “I keep telling him that don’t see what is being said or written about you in the media. See, the point is that whatever you see or read will come into your mind. I don’t read any newspaper. I have trained myself that way because I know that if I have done well, they will write good things and if I don’t, they will write that. It is a journey. When I started, I also saw, but that is how you learn. Rishabh is a great talent and he will do really well in the long run,” he said.

their job very well,” he explained. While many look at India skipper Virat Kohli as the epitome when it comes to fitness, it all started with Dhawan discussing fitness with a young Kohli in the Delhi dressing room and also sharing protein shakes. Looking back, Dhawan is happy that from being a one-off, staying fit has now become a lifestyle.

“Fitness is very important and has become and a part of one’s daily While Indian teams over the years routine. I am always on for Test cricket and when I get the opportunity (in domestic cricket) I will be playing. I will play Ranji Trophy when I am free. I will not sit at home. When I am not playing all the three formats, I will definitely play domestic cricket,” he said. Asked if he regrets missing India’s maiden Day-Night Test, Dhawan said: “No regrets on missing out. Not there, so might as well accept it and move on. I have accepted it and am working hard to come back strongly.” Signing off, Dhawan said that Team India will be one of the favorites to win the trophy come the World T20 next year. “We are strong contenders. IELTS exam preparation All three of us, Amrit, Nancy and I, returned to Canada two weeks after others had left. I turned unhappier further. The only hope that my parents, Meenu and Sunny would come to Canada was soothing me a bit. Amrit held my hand in his hand for long during our flight. I made him understand that we had to respect our new relations. Bygone was our past. Reality was staring at us. “How could you be so hard on yourself?”, Amrit asked me. He knew I had truly loved him.

had told them how nice she was. Bhua was very happy from our marriages. She had especially congratulated my dad and mom on phone. After coming from India, Amrit and I filed sponsorships for Meenu and Baljit respectively. Amrit began studying for his life-insurance exam. I often felt very sad. Amrit and I hardly talked to each other. Sometimes, I talked to him, but he was always sulky with me. After coming to Canada, I began feeling very weak physically. My mom-in-law sent me to my family doctor. I told my condition to the doctor. He checked my vitals.

“One has to be hard on oneself to discharge one’s responsibilities.”, I tried to convince him unsuccessfully. I hadn’t shared Baljit’s condition with him or anyone, not even with my mom. In fact, I had become very hard on myself.

“Do you feel sexual excitement?”, the male doctor asked me. The doctors born here are so straightforward; they don’t even see whether the patient is male or female.

Well, we reached Canada. Baljit’s parents had come to receive us. They blessed me with lots of love. They were very happy because they had got a hope of Baljit’s coming to Canada. I moved from bhua’s basement to my new in-laws’. They invited bhua to their house very respectfully because I

“Sonia, I think you are under depression. I’ll write you some medication and take it regularly. Don’t miss even its single dose.”, the doctor told me.

“Not very much.”, I said bashfully.

“Alright.”, I said.

“Do you work?”, the doctor asked.

“No, I don’t. I look after my baby. She is very young.”, I replied. “Keep yourself busy in some hobby or passion. You will feel better. I prescribe you some medication. Take it and see me after one month.”, the doctor said. “All right doctor.”, I took the prescription and went to get medication from a pharmacy. After coming home, I told Baljit’s mom about my depression problem. She asked me to upgrade my qualification. I was feeling hopeless. I felt utmost strain in my eyes. I felt like sleeping more and more. Baljit’s mom took care of Nancy even more than me. She motivated me a lot and asked me to take up any course. I surfed various websites, but I was unable to get anything out.

‘Marjaavaan’: Mush, mayhem & retro mess

Article 15 By: Vinayak Chakravorty Cast: Sidharth Malhotra, Riteish Deshmukh, Tara Sutaria Direction: Milap Zaveri Rating:* * “Marjaavaan” was made with the primary intention of reprising the success of “Ek Villain” for Sidharth Malhotra and Riteish Deshmukh. The two actors have been struggling to survive new Bollywood lately, so they have gone old school with a vengeance. “Marjaavaan” reloads eighties style violence and melodrama, unleashing the combo for a loud potboiler impact. For obvious reason, the onus of unloading this all-out formula bag on the audience’s senses falls on writer-director Milap Zaveri who, in a short span of time, has established his status as Bollywood’s go-to guy if the loud action-melodrama cocktail is what you’re looking to serve. If Zaveri used the retro mayhem mantra to sell ‘deshbhakti’ in his last film, “Satyamev Jayate”, this time the formula is employed to carry forward a tale of mush. Zaveri does that keeping the template of “Ek Villain” intact. Sidharth, as the protagonist, is a bad boy with a heart of gold. Riteish, as the antagonist, is packaged as slightly ‘hatke’ from Hindi mainstream’s assembly-line bunch of baddies. In Bollywood’s (still very much) chauvinistic scheme of things, when it comes to adding novelty to a set-up that has already been tried, the casualty is normally the heroine. So, while Riteish and Sidharth get to keep their jobs in yet another love story laced with violence, Shraddha Kapoor

of “Ek Villain” makes way for budding Bollywood beauty Tara Sutaria in “Marjaavaan”. Like “Ek Villain”, too, a big factor of “Marjaavaan” is its music (the film boasts of three composers: Payal Dev, Tanishk Bagchi, and Meet Bros.). You spot a couple of hummable songs in the soundtrack, besides the mandatory remix dance number manufactured for Bollywood’s current item gig queen, Nora Fatehi. Like most of eighties commercial Hindi cinema, Zaveri’s script is an excuse to play out the songs, action, melodrama and bizarre dialogues. Sidharth and Tara are Raghu and Zoya, a local goon and the verbally-challenged girl of his dreams. Riteish Deshmukh is Vishnu the midget, son of Raghu’s gangster boss (Nasser). Vishnu hates Raghu because the latter has his father’s trust. Twist in the tale (if you can call it so) happens when Vishnu kills Zoya. Now Raghu guns for revenge. In Milap Zaveri’s world, every twist in the tale is always an excuse to let the narrative go over the top. Post his sex-com misadventure with the Sunny Leone-starrer “Mastizaade”, the writer-filmmaker realised his mojo lay in peddling heightened drama. Also, novelty in storytelling is evidently never important for Zaveri. Larger-than-life gimmicks soaked in old-style masala matters more. In “Marjaavaan”, a big part of the larger-than-life drama kicks with the midget Vishnu. Which in turn means Riteish Deshmukh gets to play out the villain of the piece with filmi swag. While it is not a

memorable role, it has impact enough to obliterate the fact that the film actually has nothing to offer. Tara Sutaria tries to add an element of mystique with her eyes, as the girl who cannot speak, but a lack of imaginative scripting reduces her role to a dumb protagonist. Zoya is mostly trapped in cliches and, literally and otherwise, Tara in her second release finds no voice to assert her stardom or talent. For Sidharth Malhotra, “Marjaavaan” points at a basic problem. He does a functional job portraying Raghu but his very average screen presence is not enough to pull off the dated gimmicks he gets

to play out. As Raghu breaks bones and mouths random cheesy dialogues (“Main todunga aur tod kar jodunga bhi”), you realise this unimaginative revival of the vintage masala movie inadvertently looks like caricature in circa 2019. The fact that Sidharth and Tara as Raghu and Zoya share near-zero chemistry does not really help matters either. Milap Zaveri has just served a very messed-up tribute to the Bollywood entertainers of yore. Come to think, that does not really work as ideal endorsement of the now-defunct masala genre for GenNow viewers. Source: IANS

‘Ford v Ferrari’ hits the right spot

Article 15 By: Troy Ribeiro Cast: Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Jon Bernthal, Caitriona Balfe, Tracy Letts, Josh Lucas, Noah Jupe, Remo Girone, Ray McKinnon, JJ Field, Jack McMullen Direction: James Mangold Rating:* * * and 1/2

B

ased on facts for the battle of supremacy in the mid-1960s between the two titular automotive giants, director James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari” is a one-dimensional, old-fashioned period sports drama that balances thrills, laughs and emotions, in equal measure.

One-dimensional because the film is much less about the fierce competitors and their vehicles, and more about the men who pilot the exceptional machines to greatness, and battle against short-sighted employers. The film is old-fashioned because it is a story about underdogs, instincts that cannot be taught, and impulses that cannot be denied — a fact that is deeply embedded in the fabric of every American mythmaking. Also, it is structured in a formulaic manner. The film adeptly chronicles both the era of racing and the legendary men of the races, Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles, who transformed it. Matt Damon plays Carroll Shelby, the first American driver to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sidelined by health issues, he joins Ford as an automobile designer, after the company fails to collaborate with Ferrari, who have been constant winners at Le Mans.

DECEMBER 2019

He ropes in Ken Miles (Christian Bale), a British émigré with extraordinary aptitude behind the wheel and a terrible reputation for being inflexible, obstinate and difficult to handle. How the two men work against the clock to develop a vehicle to compete in the race, which is less than 90 days away, while simultaneously battling Ford’s bureaucracy, forms the crux of the tale. Together Damon and Bale seem enthusiastically immersed in the colorful characters they play. They spar well together very engagingly, both when in cahoots and at odds. Damon effortlessly oozes the all-American charm, and resolve, of the very specific era that Shelby needs. Similarly, Christian Bale is mesmerizing as Miles, the lowly, rowdy, mechanic, constantly aware of his age and commitment to his family. He gives a humane touch to his character, especially when he is bonding with his son Peter. Peter tells him: “You can’t make every lap perfect.” He replies, “But I can try.” Only goes out to show that he is a go-getter who is not willing to give up easily. Caitriona Balfe as Miles’ spry wife Mollie and Noah Jupe as Mile’s concerned son Peter are natural and engaging. They add heart to the tale. Tracy Letts as Henry Ford Jr., gives one of his best performances to date as the egotistical and driven linchpin for this conflict. Josh Lucas as Leo Beebe, is typecast as the Ford executive who takes a strong dislike to Miles and can’t see

that success lies beyond brand consistency. The pace of the film is racy but the plot written by screenwriters Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth and Jason Keller, has some abrupt scenes that make the viewing a bit jarring, despite astutely maneuvering the story to convince us that it takes more than just a perfectly-calibrated, premium vehicle in order to win.

While the engaging, sharp human drama is key to establishing bonds, with characters risking their lives and livelihood to chase greatness, the film is primarily an inroad to the racing itself. This film reminds you of the 2013-released Ron Howarddirected, “Rush”. But unlike in “Rush”, the races here are disappointing because the adrenaline in the chase is missing. Source: IANS

clothing fits you well, and your shoes are shined. If you are unsure about what to wear, email or call the person who scheduled the interview and ask about the typical dress code. It is always a good idea to dress just a little bit more professionally than the dress code requires. Your goal is to make the best impression possible. How to Handle the Day of the Interview It is very important to be on time for the interview. On time means ten to 15 minutes early. If need be, take some time to drive to the office ahead of time or check out other options for getting there so you know exactly where you are going, how long it will take to get there, and what the transportation and parking situation looks like. If you’re running late you’ll be stressed, and that’s no way to start an interview for what could be your new job. Interview Etiquette Remember that it’s not only the hiring manager who makes the decision on who to hire. Be polite and gracious to everyone you meet from the time you walk in the door to when you leave. The people you meet could be your future co-workers, so make the best impression on them that you can. When you arrive, introduce yourself to the receptionist. Make sure you know the interviewer’s name and use it as soon as possible during the interview. If you’re not sure of the name, call and ask prior to the interview. Also, remember to take a extra copy of your resume, a list of references, and any work samples you want to show the employer. Bring a list of questions to ask the interviewer. It’s a good idea to bring a notepad and pen to take notes. Stay calm and avoid stress! Good luck! By: Kirti Bhasin
