PUBLISHER NOTE Dear readers,

Thousands of years ago when humans did not form a settled society, the early men and women spent all day foraging for food. At the end of a tiresome exercise, it was their foodstuffs which comprised the high point of their entire day. They usually celebrated this excitement through a gala dinner among their group — or call it a harvest festival for every day!

Ansal Media Group Inc.

Such partying could well be the origin of many harvesting festivals that we now celebrate with great pomp and gaiety. The only difference being that unlike the daily Stone Age dinners, we now celebrate only the first crop harvest of each year.

April marks the beginning of the harvest season in India. To celebrate the crop and to thank the almighty for his blessings, many harvest festivals are celebrated. One such festival is Baisakhi, and like all things Punjabi, it is colourful, boisterous and necessitates food, music, and dance and is observed by the Sikh community in India and across the world. Through our special writeup, we have tried to explain the significance of this day. The Spotlight section talks about Dr Nisha Garg, a wonder woman who dons many versatile hats. We try to acquaint you with her professional and personal personality. We have many more exciting reads that will keep you entertained. I am thankful for your support and the love you have been showering on us. I would love to have your suggestions and recommendations to be better and grow with every upcoming edition. uman life is precious and it’s important to secure it. Insurance is a valuable product/service that saves us and our family from the financial constraints arising from an illness, injury or death. You must have often heard about insurance from your friends and financial advisors. To help you gain a basic understanding of the concept, I have explained below the common terms used in insurance. aisakhi is the Sikh New Year’s Day as it is not just a Springtime harvest festival but also a day that commemorates the formation of the Khalsa Panth of warriors under Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. The word Baisakhi comes from the Hindu calendar month of Vaishakh. It is the second month in the Hindu calendar that begins with the month of Chaitra and ends with Falgun or Fagun. This is the time when the farmers in the northern part of India have harvested the season’s crops and are gearing up for the next season’s sowing.

Guru Granth Sahib - the holy book of Sikhs. This religious procession is carried out by devotees chanting or singing holy hymns. The procession is always led by the Panj Pyare (the five beloved ones who form the central part of the Khalsa), dressed in saffron. They are followed by the holy book of the Sikhs, Guru Granth Sahib, and other members of the procession. Sewadars or volunteers help clear beforehand the road through which the procession is to pass. The procession arrives finally at the designated Gurudwara where Ardas or the prayer is offered. For the non-Sikh Hindus too, it is a holy day. Sadly, it is also commemorative of the day in 1919 when an uncouth British colonial officer General Dyer opened fire on thousands of Indians at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. The death of thousands of festive revellers by the haul of bullets shocked the world and set the narrative for independence from the foreign rule that ultimately came by in 1947. Managing exam pressure with a positive approach sleep reduces the brain’s ability to retain information. A minimum of eight to nine hours of sleep is required to ensure that the brain and the body get sufficient rest. Similarly, being on gadgets for too long before bed reduces the brain’s ability to read, retain, and recall information. It is crucial to program the body to sleep and wake up at the same time every day. This ensures higher productivity and sharper brain function.

Students in India are preparing for the upcoming exam period as schools reopen and resume preCovid activity. As they transition from remote examination methods to being physically present in the examination room, many students may experience stress or face pressure. Pressure is spreading from students to parents, affecting Indian households. The good news is that students, teachers, and parents are all in it together and can overcome exam stress. Eirini Petratou, Senior User Research Manager at BIC Cello, shares a few tips on how to manage exam anxiety: Create your own to-do-list/ study plan: Chart out your own unique study schedule to make exam preparation time easier to manage. Make sure that you plan your schedule in a way that suits your studying habits and ensures that you’re fully focused when studying/preparing. What works for you might not work for someone else. Your planning should include all requirements and materials needed for you to get the exercise done properly and reach new heights.

Write to Learn: Use the ‘write to learn’ method has proved to be one of the most effective ways to prepare for exams and retain information. As students go back to school for offline learning, it’s crucial that they get used to putting pen to paper, it helps in activating photographic memory. Remain active and healthy at all times: Leading a healthy and active lifestyle is said to reduce stress and anxiety levels as well as enhance brain function and activity. An unhealthy body

results in a lack of concentration which consequently elevates stress levels. Generally, and especially during exam period, ensure that you drink a lot of water, consume healthy food, and take part in physical activity daily. In its latest School Contact program BIC Cello emphasised how Hand Yoga can strengthen muscles used for writing reducing stress on hands and ultimately contributing towards a healthier and more relaxed body. Regulate your sleeping patterns: Sleep deprivation is worse than insomnia. Lack of

Adopt and maintain a positive mindset: Mental health and status has a detrimental impact on everything that we do. Maintaining a positive mindset and approach specifically during exam period ensures high levels of concentration and enhances mental abilities to effectively solve problems, think creatively, and cope with challenging situations. Exams, while sometimes stressful, help to develop discipline, sharpen brain activity, improve memory, foster a healthy competitive spirit, and boost self-confidence. Remember to approach this year’s exam period with a positive attitude and remain calm to ensure you ace them! By: Eirini Petratou

e usually come across kids who have this urge of knowing more and more, and Nisha in her childhood was just the same. She wanted to know-it-all. An enthusiastic reader and an avid sportswoman, Dr Nisha Garg, completed her schooling from Shishu Niketan School, Chandigarh.

Maybe it was destined in her stars or because of the innate affection in her personality, kind nature and calm behaviour — she chose to pursue the medical field and decided to study about the art of dental wellness. Being always focused on her work with a vision clear in her mind, she has been awarded with many Gold Medals throughout her tenure as a student. She completed her bachelors from BRS Dental College, Panchkula. Her interest further grew in providing pain relief to the patients and she chose to complete her MDS degree in Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics from Government Dental College, Patiala, Punjab, India. On the academic front she is an Ex. Resident, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research Chandigarh, and Government Dental College (Rajindra Hospital), Patiala. Writing always gave her wings and writing about her subject made her even more confident and helped spread knowledge to young dentists in a simplified form. Therefore, she embarked on a journey to become a well-known author. Dr Nisha has penned down many distinguished books on endodontics and operative dentistry. These books are globally acknowledged and published in different languages. Dr Nisha believes that learning keeps you updated to newer concepts and techniques, due to her passion for teaching, she runs app based academy “Dr Nisha Garg Dental Academy” where students get coaching and guidance for various competitive dental exams like NDEB, INBDE, NEET MDS and many more. Remember, there is no shortcut to success.” She owes her success to her parents and her husband Dr Amit Garg. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family. Her strength is her subject and the amassed knowledge she has. Her weakness according to her is her thrust to know more and that motivates her to keep learning. She emphasises on preserving the natural teeth and providing a smile with enhanced aesthetics and functions. She is acknowledged by patients for her painless ways of root canal treatment and giving them a chance to smile proudly as a result of her extensive experience in restorative work and root canal treatments. Dr Nisha is highly efficient at performing cosmetic dental works which focus on the beauty of smile and covers the treatments that enhance, align and whiten the teeth for a happy and healthy smile. all about the Separation Anxiety Treatment Plan

In last month’s article we discussed how separation anxiety is presented in canines and felines. As promised in the forementioned article, in this month’s segment we will be discussing a general treatment plan that can be implemented if you feel that your furry companion may be experiencing separation anxiety.

W

e highly recommend that you consult with your local veterinarian for a more specialized plan towards your specific situation; however, here are some general guidelines to help make this experience more comfortable for you and your pet. The most common method of treatment is known as Counter-conditioning. This process enables a dog experiencing fear, anxiety or aggression to become more relaxed, calm and happy. This is done by allowing your pet to associate good things that he or she loves with the triggering event that causes them discomfort. Eventually as this method is implemented, your pet begins to feel more at ease with being left alone due to the association of a good thing happening when this event that was previously seen as stressful, occurs. This is done by finding a good association, such as a certain favoured toy or food. Every time you leave your house, make sure that your pet is offered that favourite toy or given food at that time. This will allow your dog or cat to feel comfortable with the idea of your leaving, believing that in doing so they will receive a high valued treat in return. Some owners may prefer to give a treat-based toy, distracting their pet for a long period of time. An example of such would be a treat stuffed KONG toy. Other common, highly favoured treats are cheese, peanut butter, cream cheese, canned dog/cat food or kibble. However, it is im-

18

FEBRUARY 2022

portant that once you come back home, this favourite treat should be removed right away. This way you are sending the clear message to your pet that this treat is only available when you are not in the house. It is important to note here that if you witness that your dog is refusing to eat while you are not at home, then this may be a sign of a more developed stage of separation anxiety. In this case, a more specific plan for your pet may be warranted by your local veterinarian. We highly recommend that our clients stay well informed on the different types of anxieties that our pets can face. Being educated on such matters is a very detrimental step towards being able to even start a treatment plan towards helping them feel more at ease. Without having the accurate knowledge of what is required when starting a treatment plan, it is then very hard for the owner to follow through successfully and accurately follow the required steps. Certain anti-anxiety medications are also available in veterinary medicine; however, our primary priority is to assist in helping to solve the root problem at hand, before resorting to medications. Working together with your veterinarian and your pet is the key to finding success in this treatment journey!

Disaster preparedness 101 for pet owners

S

ince 2020 when the pandemic struck the world, we’ve been living in a lot of uncertainty. With people trying to reach their native places and losing jobs, globally people have been struggling to make ends meet and keep their near and dear ones safe, pet parents alike.

Instead of abandoning their furry friends in the challenging times, they went above and beyond to take care of them. While people were getting back to their normal lives with easing restrictions, another unprecedented tragedy takes over the world, the RussiaUkraine war. The unfolding humanitarian crisis has not only wreaked havoc on lives and livelihoods but also on numerous pet owners. Faizal Islam, Co-founder, Carry My Pet, shares how a pet owners can prepare to relocate with their furry friends during emergencies: The pet dilemma! Whether it is from war zones, natural disasters, or otherwise, the basic procedure to relocate pets is similar. However, every country has different sets of rules and policies around it, with some of them being really strict. Life is unpredictable; therefore, one must be prepared for the worst instead of getting nervous and panicking in troubling situations. Several pet relocation companies aid pet parents in safe and easy transportation. However, some basic preparation beforehand will make the process simpler, faster, and more convenient. Keep all relevant documents and emergency contacts ready To begin with, you can keep all necessary documents, ranging from the owners’ passports to the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from an authorized person, in place. The NOC can either be applied by the pet’s owner or the agency they hire. Keeping some emergency contact information handy is beneficial too and can lead to less chaos and confusion when relocating. The pet owners must have contact numbers of supply stores and veterinarians in the country they are residing in. Additionally, having the operational emergency contact of the Embassy of the country they are going to, is crucial. They must also have the address in case communication systems are affected, and there is a need to go and contact the www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

The Animal Quarantine and Certification Service (AQCS) helps the pet owners to get an advanced NOC from government authorities, without which the airline wouldn’t lift the pets (dogs & cats). The pet parents must have the department’s contact details, inform them at the earliest about the situation and give them the pet details.

Find the best way to exit the country

authorities physically. Updated pets vaccination books are crucial No matter the country, having an updated pet vaccination book is necessary. Therefore, to avoid the last-minute hassles, especially during tough times, it is better to update it regularly. Getting your pets vaccinated on time and keeping the record straight helps pet parents. Check microchip status Each pet is identified by a microchip containing 15 digits that should comply with ISO Standard 11784 or Annex A to ISO standard 11785. There is no other way of identifying a pet. Therefore, make sure that the microchip is in place, and if it is, check if the microchip scanner can read the unique number.

pet parents to have the contact details of the Embassy of your home country in the country they are residing in. As soon as the situation demands evacuation, they must contact the Embassy and stay in constant touch with them for a smoother process. It will help them remain calm as there will be other challenges too. Inform the Animal Quarantine and Certification Service (ACQS) office in India The NOC is one of the most documents when it comes to relocating to any country.

Depending on the distance and the worsening situation, the pet owners must figure out alternate options to exit the country, except the obvious ones. Knowing the route and mode of transport will aid them in preparing themselves better. The least they would want to do in an already distressing situation is get anxious even more. For pet parents, their fourlegged friends are family. While there are protocols in place, it’s always better to have your own to-do list and keep checking every task, especially for circumstances that can change overnight. By: N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

Ensure enough food supplies & medicines There is no way of knowing how long unforeseeable events like war or other disasters will last. In such a scenario, it’s imperative to arrange enough food supplies for the pets. In addition to it, the pet parents must have basic medication for them. Why? Because like humans, pets too get anxious in such distraught situations and might behave differently. Therefore, medicines that help them calm down are essential for your emergency kit. Arrange a pet crate If the pet parents are contacting a relocation agency, there is a high possibility that they will have their own pet crates. However, it will be better for the owners to have an IATA-certified pet crate of their own to avoid last-minute issues and safe relocation. Notify the Embassy As mentioned, it is crucial for FEBRUARY 2022

Adverse effects of changing seasons on skin

B

caffeine that drains water from the body. In addition, if you add an external barrier in the form of an emollient or cream to the outer layer of your skin, you’re making additional preparation to protect it from moisture loss.

esides being the largest organ, our skin is also quite adaptablewhen seasons gradually roll on from one to another, it acclimatizes to the prevalent one. But even something as adaptable can react adversely when faced with sudden, brutal climate changes. Blame it on climate change As a rule, a sizable variety of skin conditions and diseases are aggravated by climate change. Inflammatory skin conditions such as dermatitis or eczema are likely to flare up when air pollution or stress is on the rise, as is the case with skin allergies. So, how do you know if it’s dehydration that’s ailing your skin or dryness? Dehydration or Dryness?

Dehydrated skin is completely different from dry skin. The former only lacks water and is a condition, while the latter needs additional

natural oils or sebum to restore it to health and is a skin type. While dry skin is something you are usually born with, the prevailing season, hormones or the skin’s age may also play spoilsport and cause sebaceous glands to produce less than enough oils to keep it lubricated. Dry skin can also be a result of some health issues. If your skin is dehydrated, it can coexist with symptoms such as dullness, under-eye dark circles, itchiness, patchy skin along with the increased incidence of fine wrinkles. And if you are battling general dehydration characterized by dry mouth, lightheadedness, etc., then your skin is also bound to suffer from the same. Dry skin can show signs such as irritated red skin that is scaly with white flakes and is regularly associated with skin diseases such as eczema, psoriasis, etc. How to treat dehydrated and dry skin? Dehydrated: Dehydrated skin is in dire need of water; so increasing water intake always helps, as will reduction in consumption of diuretics such as

22

APRIL 2022

Dry: Dry skin type, on the other hand, needs intense care from within as well as on the outside and usually all year round. While during in-between climates, it fares more poorly, the skin type in general needs additional care. So, in the present climate, ensure that you keep your skin moisturized at all times and keep it away from too much water and definitely hot water. Absolutely nothing dries the skin out more than these factors and harsh chemicals. So choose only the heaviest emollients that are chemical-free. You may also consider adding a humidifier to the house during the winter months and this sometimes hot, sometimes cold climate. If you still feel the need for something extra, after the daily nighttime CTM regime, consider adding a gel mask to the bed. This will keep your skin cocooned in moisture all the hours you’re asleep and on waking you will find plump happy skin waiting to be revealed, In this weather, you will find plant, seed or nut oils such as shea, almond and coconut nourishing for dry skin care while lactic and citric acids work great for the dehydrated condition. Products that work for both conditions: Then there are those multitasking ingredients that work great for both, such as the ultra-nourishing hyaluronic acid and ceramide. Both seal in the oils into the skin barrier thus boosting its performance and preventing moisture loss. You can achieve healthy and glowing skin by adding a skin booster treatment or bio-remodeler to your regime, such as Profhilo, which is an ultrapure hydrating hyaluronic acid in a rich dose delivered directly to your skin and lasts long. It is because Profhilo is a bio-remodeler, it stimulates collagen production, which improves skin tone, radiance, hydration, and suppleness, making your skin looks firm and moisturized. And your damaged skin will be replaced by a healthy sheen. By: Dr. Chiranjiv Chabra www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

But he was ready to accept me in all circumstances. We went to his house. His house was twentytwo years old. There were two basements in the house. Sam also had about seventy thousand dollars in his bank account. He had a life insurance policy with over thirty thousand dollars in that account. He was taking job contracts from English companies and making pretty good money. “Aunt, I’ll leave no stone unturned to keep Sonia and Nancy happy. I have learned who is in my favor and who are not. I’ll do as you advise. I have neither any bad habit, nor any kind of other debt.”, Sam assured my mom-in-law. Sam sounded completely truthful to us. Mom blessed him very lovingly. After coming home, I took Nancy to my room, kissed and embraced her with utmost love. Hail the Lord! Baljit’s dad talked to a lawyer and set an appointment with him. The lawyer asked us to bring one witness from both sides. We went to our lawyer’s office. Our lawyer asked Sam and me to sign several papers to file our reunion case. He told us that we could start living as common-law partners. After completing legal formalities, we went to a Sikh Temple. Baljit’s dad explained to the priest and asked him to perform a prayer for our happy reunion. After getting blessings from the gurdwara, we

came to Amrit’s house. Meenu’s mom-in-law performed some rituals and saw me off with Sam. All of them came to Sam’s house with me. Baljit’s dad had already ordered food from a restaurant. All had food. Nancy was looking at me quizzically, but she was quiet and calm. After having a meal, all blessed us for a happy new life, and left. Sam kept playing with Nancy for a long time. Then Sam went to the washroom. “Who is this uncle?”, Nancy whispered in my ear. Continued in next edition

How a parent can help their child prep for a competitive exam One of the defining responsibilities of parents is to enable their children to realise their potential. Both the students and their families are inordinately anxious in the days leading up to examinations.

P

arents are concerned about their children’s academic achievement, the amount of time they spend studying, and the degree to which success or failure may influence their children’s future. In fact, parents frequently experience the same, if not higher, levels of tension and worry as their children during examinations! A parent should ideally serve as a facilitator for their kids

throughout tests, inspiring and helping them release tension when needed. Because they have more one-on-one time with their children, parents play the most important role in assisting children in dealing with examination stress. The following are some methods that parents may adopt to get constructively involved in their child’s academic life and help them prepare for tests better:

Building your Dream Kitchen? Let Us Assist At Fibretech we take pride in helping you find the right fixtures for your Dream Kitchen Project.

Positively motivate the kids: Although well-timed motivation and encouragement to perform well in the exam is beneficial, pressuring the youngster to study “more” or “better” is counterproductive. Exam anxiety is exacerbated by undue parental pressure. Parents who wish to help reduce test anxiety should understand how to motivate them appropriately. Avoid additional mental strain: Pressuring your children to achieve exceptional grades all the time may cause emotional pain. Maintain a cool and controlled demeanor as a parent and emphasise the importance of studying for them to attain their future objectives. If they are unable to concentrate and study, gently inquire as to why they are unable to do so and assist them in overcoming distractions and developing concentration skills.

them feel valued and appreciated. Assist in developing efficient exam strategies: help children develop a plan to finish their syllabus. If one approach does not seem to be working, try another. Do not force the kids to follow an unfavourable or unduly taxing regimen. Help children maintain a healthy daily routine: Ensure that your child maintains a healthy balance between his schooling and his recreational activities. This will help them get enough rest before they begin studying for their next exam. Encourage them to avoid late-night study sessions, but if they believe that’s

Give your children ample attention: Children, in many circumstances, do not communicate their worries to others and keep them to themselves. Hence, recognise the symptoms of discomfort and spend extra time with them to get a better understanding of their present state of mind. Assure them that they are consistently supported and motivated, making www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

when they’ll learn the most, go ahead and let them. Distractions should be identified and managed: every student is distracted in some manner; all you have to do is figure out what is interfering with your child’s education and solve it effectively. Rather than completely removing something your child likes. Pay attention post-exams: Listen to your child’s

work and let them discuss it without passing any judgments. Avoid being pedantic in pointing out errors. This is the time when your child needs someone to talk to about his or her thoughts, concerns, and anxieties. Ensure that your child maintains contact with his or her peers and relatives: Give space to your child if you think he or she shouldn’t be bothered. To some extent, this is true, but it is also critical for kids to interact with their peers and other people to keep their spirits up. Social isolation can be detrimental to children. As a parent, it is crucial to help children build a foundation of selfmotivation and self-reliance so that they can withstand greater challenges at different stages of life. By: Dr. Sridhar G

‘Parallel Mothers’: Ordinary story brilliantly told By: TROY RIBEIRO Duration: 123 minutes Director: Pedro Almodovar Cast: Penelope Cruz, Aitana SanchezGijon, Milena Smit, Israel Elejalde, Julieta Serrano, Rossy de Palma, Daniela Santiago Rating: ***1/2 While on the surface, director Pedro Almodovar’s ‘Parallel Mothers’ is an ordinary story of two women who became mothers on the same day at the same hospital and how their lives intertwine. But, if you look deeper into the narrative, you will find stories of many more mothers, including grandmothers, thus making the film rich and compelling. The film begins with Madrid-based Janis (Penelope Cruz), a middle-aged and successful professional photographer doing a photoshoot with forensic anthropologist Arturo (Israel Ele-

jalde) for a magazine article. After the shoot, she seeks his help in securing permits and funding from a histori-

cal society to excavate a mass grave in her ancestral village, where- according to her family- the body of her great grandfather was dumped during the Spanish Civil War. Janis and her relatives hope to exhume the dead to give them a proper burial. During this period, romance brews between Janis and Arturo, and an ecstatic Janis finds herself pregnant. She decides to go ahead with the pregnancy and be a single mother. In the labour room of a maternity ward, during the final stages of her delivery, she meets Ana (Milena Smit), a rebel teenager who, given her circumstances, is anything but happy about having a baby. Janis and Ana bond while their daughters owing to some health issues- are isolated in the observation room, after which they go their separate ways. Janis names her baby Cecilia after her grandmother. And Ana names her daughter Anita. While Janis has the support of her dear friend Elena (Rossy

30

APRIL 2022

de Palma) and an au pair, Ana has Teresa (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon), her actress mother, who promises to help raise her granddaughter. Janis and Ana lead their lives independently as conscientious mothers till fate reunites them to propel the narrative forward. Visually, in the maternity hospital, with tight closeup frames of the mothers in agonising pain, the film highlights the drama of birth. And similar to the drama at birth, the film ensures a rhythmic progression that leads to the inevitable resolution. But unlike the high-pitch drama of childbirth, the tension and suspense in the plot are subtle and low-keyed. Penelope Cruz is spot on as Janis, who is willing to bend her principles to protect her happiness. Similarly, Smit as Ana is commendable. She is radiant in essaying her role as a vulnerable and anguished teenage mother, who is all out to put her stamp on motherhood. Aitana Sanchez Gijon as Teresa is equally compelling, offering a different dimension to what a conventional mother should be. Rossy de Palma as Janis’ flamboyant friend Elena, and Israel Elajalde as Arturo are prominent despite having miniscule roles. Overall, ‘Parallel Mothers’ is an engaging film. You would appreciate it more, only if you knew the customs, traditions, and history of its cinematic universe. By: Troy Ribeiro

Consider this if you have a family history of oral cancer

In one’s daily life, it is not uncommon to spot images warning one of oral cancer -- on cigarette packets, precautionary adverts ahead of movies, and even on television. This major global public health problem, however, has a high incidence and is only growing.

A

s shocking as the statistic may be, oral cancer remains the major cause of death from oral disease worldwide. At the individual level, oral cancer can have multiple risk factors, some of them being family history. While being at-risk or predisposed may not always translate into a case of cancer, those with some family history of cancer are believed to be at high risk of cancer. Research also shows that globally, about four out of five people with oral cancer use tobacco, and about 70 percent are heavy drinkers. There are a staggering 274.9 million tobacco users in India, and as per the National Family Health Survey - 5, 18.8 per cent of all Indian men aged 15 and above consume alcohol, while 1.3 percent of women aged 15 and above consume alcohol -- adding up to paint a rather worrisome picture.

What is oral cancer ? It includes malignancy of the vermillion borders of the lips and all surfaces of the oral cavity including the anterior two-thirds of the tongue. These cancers occur predominantly as squamous

32

APRIL 2022

cell carcinomas, and are highly lethal, incapacitating, and disfiguring. Historically, the death rate associated with oral cancer has been particularly high due to latestage diagnosis and intervention. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), however, some of the most common cancer types, such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, oral cancer, and colorectal cancer, have high cure probabilities when detected early and treated according to best practices. Here are some key measures to consider when you have a hereditary in oral cancer cases: Certain factors and lifestyle choices can increase one’s susceptibility to oral cancer, including tobacco and betel nut or areca nut (supari) consumption, all forms of tobacco, including cigarettes, beedi, pipes, cigars, and chewing (smokeless) tobacco, keeping tobacco quid inside mouth and paan with betel nut/ areca nut (supari). Periodic oral checkups to assess the risk: Regular

checkups and other regular health tests by a doctor can help detect cancer early, making the treatment easier. Make regular appointments with your dentist. These days, early detection kits such as by Erly Sign can help assess a low, moderate or high level of risk, from the comfort of one’s home.

Limit excess calories, sugar intake and excess red meat: These exacerbate your risk of oral cancer and must be avoided. Red meats, such as beef, lamb and pork, have been classified as carcinogenic which means it probably causes cancer. Eating red meat also increases the risk of cancer.

Never ignore any smallest sign, symptom or discomfort in the oral cavity, lip, tongue, or throat while chewing or swallowing: Currently, a vast majority of patients are detected through a visual exam and/or are symptomatic, at which point they are likely late stage. As a result, oral cancer often goes undetected to the point of metastasizing.

Keep your distance from tobacco products and alcohol or keep it in moderation: If you don’t consume tobacco or alcohol, it’s a good idea to not start, and if you do, make efforts towards quitting. As per the WHO, while non-smokers are also at risk, smokers are up to 22 times more likely to develop lung cancer in their lifetime compared to non-smokers. People who use both alcohol and tobacco have a 5-fold increased risk of developing cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx and oesophagus compared to people who use either alcohol or tobacco alone. For heavy users, the risk is up to 30 times higher. This preventive approach must be followed especially by people above 30.

Always follow a healthy diet and dental hygiene: Good, balanced nutrition helps keep one’s body running smoothly and optimally. Ensure you are taking your daily allowance of all macro and micronutrients in your meals, along with taking in enough fruits and vegetables. Moreover, good oral hygiene is also helpful if one has a family history of oral cancer.

All you need to know about TUBERCULOSIS (TB) 4 Malnutrition or low body weight 4 Very young or advanced age

Other factors Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji

4 Using substances. IV drugs or excessive alcohol use weakens your immune system and makes you more vulnerable to tuberculosis. 4 Using tobacco. Tobacco use greatly increases the risk of getting TB and dying of it. 4 Working in health care. Regular contact with people who are ill increases your chances of exposure to TB bacteria. Wearing a mask and frequent hand-washing greatly reduce your risk. 4 Living or working in a residential care facility. People who live or work in prisons, homeless shelters, psychiatric hospitals or nursing homes are all at a higher risk of tuberculosis due to overcrowding and poor ventilation. 4 Living with someone infected with TB. Close contact with someone who has TB increases your risk.

MD,FRCP ( C ) Consultant Pediatrician Surrery BC

T

uberculosis (TB) is a potentially serious infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs. The bacteria that cause tuberculosis are spread from person to person through tiny droplets released into the air via coughs and sneezes. On March 24,1882 Dr Robert Koch of Germany first identified the bacteria which causes TB called Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. Medications started to be used after World War two, prior to that there were no Antibiotics which could kill this bacteria.

Complications

Daily 4100 people die due to TB world wide and about 30,000 get infected daily. TB is now fully Curable with Medications such as INH Rifampicin Ethambutol & few more. Once rare in developed countries, tuberculosis infections began increasing in 1985, partly because of the emergence of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. HIV weakens a person’s immune system, so it can’t fight the TB germs. In the United States, because of stronger control programs, tuberculosis began to decrease again in 1993. But it remains a concern.

Symptoms Although your body can harbor the bacteria that cause tuberculosis, your immune system usually can prevent you from becoming sick. For this reason, doctors make a distinction between: 4Latent TB. You have a TB infection, but the bacteria in your body are inactive and cause no symptoms. Latent TB, also called inactive TB or TB infection, isn’t contagious. Latent TB can turn into active TB, so treatment is important. 4Active TB. Also called TB disease, this condition makes you sick and, in most cases, can spread to others. It can occur weeks or years after infection with the TB bacteria.

Signs and symptoms of

34

APRIL 2022

active TB include: 4Coughing for three or more weeks 4Coughing up blood or mucus 4 Chest pain, or pain with breathing or coughing 4Unintentional weight loss 4Fatigue 4Fever 4Night sweats 4Chills 4Loss of appetite Tuberculosis can also affect other parts of your body, including the kidneys, spine or brain. When TB occurs outside your lungs, signs and symptoms vary according to the organs involved. For example, tuberculosis of the spine might cause back pain, and tuberculosis in your kidneys might cause blood in your urine.

When to see a doctor See your doctor if you have a fever, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats or a persistent cough. These are often indications of TB but can also result from other conditions. Also, see your doctor if you think you’ve been exposed to TB. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people who have an increased risk of tuberculosis be screened for latent TB infection. This recommendation includes people who:

4Have HIV/AIDS 4Use IV drugs 4Are in contact with infected people 4 Are from a country where TB is common, such as several countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia 4 Live or work in areas where TB is common, such as prisons or nursing homes 4 Work in health care and treat people with a high risk of TB 4 Are children who are exposed to adults at risk of TB

Risk factors Anyone can get tuberculosis at any age but certain factors can increase your risk, including:

Weakened immune system A healthy immune system often successfully fights TB bacteria. However, several conditions and medications can weaken your immune system, including: 4HIV/AIDS 4Diabetes 4Severe kidney disease 4Certain cancers 4 Cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy 4 Drugs to prevent rejection of transplanted organs 4 Some drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease and psoriasis

Without treatment, tuberculosis can be fatal. Untreated active disease typically affects your lungs, but it can affect other parts of your body, as well. Tuberculosis complications include: 4 Spinal pain. Back pain and stiffness are common complications of tuberculosis. 4 Joint damage. Arthritis that results from tuberculosis (tuberculous arthritis) usually affects the hips and knees. 4 Swelling of the membranes that cover your brain (meningitis). This can cause a lasting or intermittent headache that occurs for weeks and possible mental changes. 4 Liver or kidney problems. Your liver and kidneys help filter waste and impurities from your bloodstream. Tuberculosis in these organs can impair their functions. 4 Heart disorders. Rarely, tuberculosis can infect the tissues that surround your heart, causing inflammation and fluid collections that might interfere with your heart’s ability to pump effectively. This condition, called cardiac tamponade, can be fatal

Vaccinations In countries where tuberculosis is more common, infants often are vaccinated with bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine. The BCG vaccine isn’t recommended for general use in the Canada. Cont. in next edition www.entertainmentmagazine.ca
