Tybee Breeze Established 2002

ALL HALE THE ‘BUMS!’

It’s that time of year again! That time when kids, from one to one-hundred, turn out for the annual Beach Bum Parade; a colossal water fight, and now infamous symbolic ritual, signifying the official date when the locals (aka; Beach Bums), turn the island over to the tourists for the season! 2013 marks the 27th Year for Tybee’s TO GET IN TOUCH: Annual Beach Bum Parade! “The Admiral” Jiggs Watson is no longer able to man the Call: (912) 257-2254 Subscribe: $29 to P.O. Email: sundi@tybeebreeze.com She aptly and proudly carries the torch for her beloved husband, and make no mistake Web: tybeebreeze.com Carrie, like Jiggs, organized and efficient, has LIKE US: it all under control! though,” recollects Nancy! “I think the home in town was sold in 1963 - and we were elated to be full time, on Tybee Time!” Nancy and Donnie share favorite memories of growing up on Tybee. “The opportunity to be a kid - and to just be able to ride a bike or walk wherever we wanted.” And, of course, (Nancy recalls) I was driving at eleven!” At least around the corner to Mike’s (Tybee Market) to get things for her Mom! Summers were spent all day in Horsepen Creek off of our dock.” Says Nancy! “Crabbing, fishing, swimming and the wonderful sandbar which was like our very own private beach! Naturally we enjoyed the beach and ocean as well, but the two were definitely both “creek rats” at heart! Nancy’s story is one of three girls; Cathy, Nancy, and (the late and much beloved) Susie Owen Cary - three daughters born to Jack and Corrine Brady Owen. It’s also a tale of two sisters for two brothers! “My sister Cathy started dating Donnie’s brother, Freddie. I was ten or eleven at the time; we were kinda sweethearts that first summer, even smooched once! (That’s making out to you ‘young’ folks!) Our friendship endured, not romantic, but very close,” describes Nancy. “In high school he had his girl and I had my guy, we all hung around together in a large group of friends.” Donnie and Nancy’s paths parted for a few years, but when Donnie returned home from the navy “we started hanging out,” declares Nancy, “and decided to get married! Cathy and Freddie celebrate 50 years together this year; and we just celebrated 41!” And, you wonder how that “Anderson clan” got to be so BIG! “Donnie started working on the Tybee Island Police Dept a month after we were married; I was working as Respiratory Therapist at St. Joseph’s Hospital. We purchased our home on South Campbell 3 months later. We have lived in the same home for 41 years! Donnie went to work for Chatham County Sheriffs Department, served as Undersheriff (Chief Deputy) for 36 years retiring in 2010. Nancy retired from her part-time hospital work in 1985. Started as a Realtor with Solomon Properties in 2002, enjoys this late in life career change. “I work retired persons hours now, Ha Ha Ha,” chuckles Nancy! Donnie, remembers the early Beach Bum parades when all the guys Donnie, Jack Yeomans, Charlie Brown, Jimmy Brown (and quite a few more!) who used to hang at Freddie’s in the morning on the way to work and always stopped there first coming back on the island after work. They called it, ‘Freddie’s Gentlemen’s Club.’ They decided to be in the parade and, for several years, would load a trailer with the couch and chairs from inside Freddie’s (thank goodness it was plastic upholstered),” says Donnie! “We all enjoyed this and had a lot of fun. Once the pressure washers, etc., started we stopped riding - just

too rough!” Donnie and I are honored to be Grand Marshalls,” gleams Nancy! “We are both excited, but not as much as our three sons; Dee, Brian and Fred! The Grands will be there for sure Amelia, Ruby, and Parker - all wielding the Super Shooters! See y’all there!” The Queen; Lady Abby Burke, who has reigned supreme over all of Tybee’s Sands for half a century - give or take! Born Abby Payne, an Army Brat, she first came to Tybee in 1945. Like so many, she and her family had both a house in Savannah and a summer house at the beach! Abby and her only sibling, a brother, Sonny Colly, lived for those summers at the beach! They loved the freedom of making the island their own, too. “We could ride our bikes, run, walk and play, from one end of the island to the other. There was no worry or fear of anything, in those days, says Abby! Her mother ran a restaurant, first in the old Tybee Hotel, then in Shorty’s Turntable. “My brother and I would go crabbing specifically to catch the crabs needed for my mother to make her delicious crab cakes that were served in the restaurant!” I’ve always worked, says Abby, sometimes I had five jobs at one time!” Abby attended both island schools. I attended “Tybee School” when it was just an old, one room school house! They left again, spent a few years abroad, but inevitably always came home to Tybee! Abby has the distinction of being in the very first class, at St. Michael’s School in 1948; two of her well known classmates, and local Tybeeites, were Mola Chu Jung, and Sally Bazemore; all (as cousin Nancy A. says,) “Tybee Lifer’s themselves!” Abby had a number of “loves” over the years; her first boyfriend was Casey Jones, the radio announcer! But, she

met the love of her life in 1970 - Jimmy Burke. Together they raised five children on Tybee. When asked what would you like people to know about you that might come as a bit of a surprise? Abby responds: “Well, to be honest, I’m Available!” Recently divorced after forty-two years of marriage, “it’s both scary and exciting to once again be in the ‘dating pool’ … especially at this age!” Says Abby. Life’s definitely an adventure! Together, Jimmy and Abby, along with five children, ran Burke’s Float stand for over four decades! Abby shares one of her most hilarious memories regarding the float stand. “I had this little table that was a bit low; it came up about so high,” says Abby, as she points to the top of her thighs. We used it as a sort of a “desk” at the float stand. One day, this stalky fellow, not too tall, and clad only in a thong, walked straight up to the little desk, where all of a sudden… well, Uhm… all I could see… you might say, were his crown jewels - sitting right on the table! Which prompted me to say, well hello “Mr. Holmes,” how can we help you today!” The Big Kahuna; The “Chairman of the Bored,” Mr. John O’Neill, Tybee’s uniquely own… voice of “Oz”! John O’Neill is a great choice for this year’s Big Kahuna! A larger than life character, John, with his famed “radio broadcaster’s voice,” can often be found presiding over the ‘Bored Meetings’ (along with some of his most infamous cronies) at Fannie’s on the Beach! Some of his most renowned fellow ‘Bored Members‘ are Roma, Whitley, and the Rev. Mike to name a few! John, along with his bride, Judy, have lived on Tybee for many years. “Both Judy’s family and my family had beach houses here when we were small cherin,” says John. “Judy and I moved here, year round, thirty years ago. I met Judy in the ‘70s when I was working as a Carey Hilliard’s manager. We have been together for 35 years!” John remembers the early beginnings of the Beach Bum Parade. “I‘m going to keep this short, says John, I know you‘re running out of space! Judy and I were a part of a handful of folks who started the Bum softball team, and the parade,” explains John. “I remember Bob and Betty Anne Davenport [then owners of the DeSoto Beach Club] as the first grand marshals and Sally Pearce [artist, and mother of artist/birdman Mallory Pearce] was the first queen.” The Bum Parade actually started out as our Homecoming parade, and it wasn’t until the second year that water was introduced. The Offshore Lounge, now the Rock House, fired the first water attack from the back of the parade to our float in the front using a three man slingshot. And the rest they say is history! Batman [Gordon Varnedoe] was the first Big Kahuna, and I intend to do my very best to live up to the expectations he set forth so many years ago. “I am humbled beyond words to have been selected for this ‘once in a lifetime honor; See you knuckleheads at the parade!” It’s hard to believe that it has been an entire year… Feeling a little under the weather; and perhaps coincidentally, a little retrospective; as this writer finds herself sitting here, peering at the computer screen, writing this particular Beach Bum article - I clearly hear a lone voice as if whispering in my ear. Ever so calm, ever so sweetly; (the very same thing he said every year) “Deb, honey, I’m so happy you’re writing the Bums’ article again this year. You always do us proud!” I hope so, Jiggs, I hope so. I can still see the twinkle in his eye, and that great big smile that could light up any room in an instant! Lord, Jiggs, we miss you friend; we all really miss you! SALUTE!

Dear Fran, I am so excited. I get to come to Tybee again and see the Beach Bum Parade. You might remember me from years ago when I got arrested for indecent exposure in one of the parades. I still don’t see what was wrong with me wearing my purple thong along the parade route. But, I’ve been rehabilitated and will do my best not to show all my endowments this year. Excited and ready, Seymour Butts Dear Seymour, I really thought part of your punishment involved never setting foot on Tybee again. I do hope you’ll behave this year because, believe me, your endowments aren’t that special and that thong is nauseating. Stay covered, Fran

If so, you probably need to get yourself to a doctor in a hurry. I don’t even want to think about where your tattoo is. And don’t scratch in public. It embarrasses the rest of us. Dear Fran, I have a big problem. Recently, on an unusually cold day, I was really chilly and a friend of mine was gracious enough to lend me his socks to wear with my flip flops. Now my Nana, who is from the Old Country, says we have crossed a line and the guy and I are officially betrothed and must marry. What should I do? I don’t want to offend Nana but I’m not marrying the guy just because I wore his socks. Can you help me? Wines from all over the world were provided by eight distributers and ten local Tybee restaurants served up delicious culinary wonders to the delight of the Tybee Post Theater supporters. In addition to the wine and eats there were live and silent auctions and musical entertainment provided by Georgia Kyle and Betsy Kingston & The Crowns. The silent auction had over forty items and the premiere live auction item was a ten day trip to Germany. The high bidders were Greg and Sandy Helmly. Another highlight of the festival was the day itself, what a spectacular day to be outside on Tybee….! Dick Smith, a member of the Tybee Post Theater Board of Directors, remarked that this year’s Wine Festival was the “best attended and best overall wine fest ever.”

Spring /2013: tragedy and rebirth

shed that winter fat....a sign of re-birth for the city and its citizens. The unthinkable tragedy that was wrought on Boston by two deranged brothers defies any logical explanations. At the time of writing this article, this horrific act of death and destruction is only six days past and it will take many days, weeks or months to get all of the facts of what would motivate two young immigrants to willfully plan and execute such a diabolical act. Boston, like Tybee has a big heart, great community spirit and will emerge from this tragedy stronger than before. However, everyone exposed to the videos, news accounts, and descriptions of this horrible-cowardly-act have lost some of the pure joy and innocence of watching and participating in festive and athletic events, without looking over our shoulders. It is unlikely that anyone of us could have stopped these two terrorists, but it should be a wakeup call to all of us to be more observant, vigilant and possessive of our heritage and traditions. Political correctness should take a backseat to common sense and never prevent us from reporting menacing actions, threatening conversations and/or alarming behavior from any person or groups of people. On a happier note, a clear sign of the re-birth of spring is the Third Thursday Concerts sponsored by the City of Tybee’s Better Home Town program. On the third Thursday of April, I had the pleasure of being outside, in shorts and flipflops under the oaks at Huc-A-Poos, listening to CC Witt serenade me and a hundred or so other Tybee folks with her original music. In May the Third Thursday Concert will be held at the South End Strand round-about at the end of 16th St. (Tybrisa for newbees and tourists). Please come out and support these concerts and bring your friends and neighbors. Remember: “If you’re lucky enough to live on Tybee, you’re lucky enough…!

GREETINGS! National Preservation Month is this month! Our partners with the National Trust for Historic Preservation encourage a more active approach to celebrating local history and historic places every May. This year’s theme is “See! Save! Celebrate!” Think creatively and share your stories, activities and photos with us so that we may let the nation know how much Tybee celebrates our history and historic places. Send your stories and photos to cmorton@cityoftybee.org or post them on the Tybee Island Better Hometown Program’s fan FB page. Third Thursdays on Tybee series - the annual “homegrown” concerts continue this month. We are looking forward to Alice & Albert performing Downtown at the Tybrisa / Strand Roundabout May 16 from 5:30pm until 7:00pm. Alice & Albert combine their heart and soul for folk music to provoke thought, provide hope and entertain. With ten (10) recorded CDs, Alice and Albert have been selected performers at a variety of

folk festivals in New York, Napa Valley, Portland, San Diego, and Savannah. Their sparkling harmonies, crafty guitar playing and sensuous bass, with a dash of humor, will delight concert goers throughout the evening. The Third Thursdays on Tybee concert series were created for those that live, work and play on Tybee. Bring a chair, stroll the shops and grab a bite to eat while you enjoy the music outdoors. Businesses in the corridor welcome you to stop in while you are enjoying the free entertainment. More information is available on the Third Thursdays on Tybee’s Facebook page. Sponsorships packages are available. Plus, donations are accepted during the performances to assist the BHT Program’s efforts to host community based activities throughout the corridor. With the coming of spring, guests to the island are arriving and the Tybee Island Information Provider Program begins again Memorial Day weekend. Thank you to those that have signed up to volunteer already! More willing locals (college age and up) are sought to share the wealth of information they have for this hometown with those that are visiting. Information Providers can either walk around downtown assisting visitors and / or provide info from the Info Booth at the Roundabout. If you are interested and can spare a few hours between Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, call the Better Hometown Program office at 4725071. Last year’s Golden Hat Info Provider recipient, Jim Glass (pictured to the left), will even show you the ropes! For more information about the Better Hometown Program, upcoming special events and “Door-to-Door Corridor News”, sign up for the monthly BHT Newsletter by visiting the BHT Program’s webpage (http://www.cityoftybee.org/BetterHometownProgram. aspx). The Tybee Island Better Hometown FB (fan) page is updated quite regularly as well with “news you can use”. We invite you to like it. Here’s to you and the nostalgia of Tybee! Conch Shells About fifteen years ago, we were out joy riding in Sonny Denmark’s pontoon boat when we saw an island that was deserted and stopped to take a walk. This island was off Tybee Island. As we walked along, I saw a beautiful conch shell and stopped to pick Judy Carter, Walter & Marguerite it up. The shell was in Mitchell, Jimmy & Lynn Marston the green marsh grass along the edge of the water. As I picked up the shell, I saw another one, and then another. I called out to my buddies and they came over and started picking up conch shells as fast as they could. Walter Mitchell said he would not be caught picking up shells on the beach like we were doing – EVER! We had no buckets to put shells in, so we ran back and forth to the boat and piled them in. All of a sudden, I see Walter picking up shells and I asked him what he was doing? Apparently he got caught up in the frenzy as much as we did. I have never seen as many conch shells in one place. When we got home that evening we counted over 200 shells. What a fun day that was!

Just Thinking By Judy O’Neill Thoughts sometimes just pop into my head. Some are profound; others are…well…let’s just say “interesting,” bordering on bizarre. I’ve recently given some consideration to things I could do without instead my usual thoughts of things I reeeaaallly want. I could do without… Drivers who poke along the Tybee Road and then speed up when they get to the passing lanes. Orange Crush and all the traffic and noises that come with it. Mosquitos and sand gnats. And flies, and fleas, and pretty much all buggy type critters. High humidity that makes my big southern hair frizz. Mud. There’s a story there but you’ll have to ask me about it. My husband’s dirty sox. Car trouble. Door bells. Bills, taxes, insurance premiums. Whiners and complainers, unless it’s whine and cheese time on the porch. Bicyclists, joggers, and walkers, especially those wearing ear buds, who have no clue that I’m about to run over them if they don’t get out of the middle of the street. And, of course, I always have to mention the idiots who decide Jones Avenue is the place to bicycle, jog, or walk. The police person who lies in ambush watching the stop sign at Jones and 6th Street. (Go watch the speeders in front of my office instead.) Drivers who don’t realize that on Tybee the left lane is not the express lane. It’s pretty much a left turn lane. Calories. Nothing should be fattening. Especially French fries, ice cream, and pizza. Mow, blow, and go noises early on the only morning I have to sleep late. People who don’t say thank you. The list could go on but I’d probably offend some people I know. So, I’ll try to quit all this thinking for a while and just get on with life on Tybee…the best place to live that I know of. Judy O’Neill has written for the Breeze for the past 11 years. She was named “Best Local Columnist” at the 2011, 2008 and 2006 Breezy Awards and “Best Local Real Estate Agent” at the 2005 Awards. 1912 Continues Following the sham elections of 1912 held – or at least declared – at Tybee’s Council meeting of April 11, 1912, the meeting continues with other business. “The Committee to whom was referred the matter of having adjusted, the freight rates in effect on the C of Ga Ry Tybee Division, reported they had arranged for a reduction in rates on several classes of shipment, such as Ice, Lumber, etc. Report received as information. “A petition from A.C. Harmon and others was read, requesting the Town Of Tybee to advance $1000.00 towards the cost of opening [illegible – maybe some crossovers], same to be paid back to the Town of Tybee by popular subscriptions. Petition laid on the table.” Next in the minutes was the endless annual rendition of the ordinances, licensing fees, taxation matters, appointments, etc. as well as who got licenses to sell “Non Intoxicants made from Cereals.” The list of these cereal merchants gets longer every year! – “Near Fort Screven Station [two sites], Hotel Tybee, Hotel Tybee Pavilion, Beach Lot #91 [south side of 15th Street – remember this Lot #91 as a future article will return here], South End hotel, South End Station Restaurant, Sea Breeze Hotel, Ocean View Hotel, Sea View Hotel, and Near Tybee Station.” Note the list goes beyond establishments licensed to sell this mystery “non–intoxicating” drink and adds sites apparently on vacant land “near” train stations. Whatever this drink was during Prohibition days, the Tybee folk sure seemed to like it. “The Mayor reported he was in correspondence with County Commission of Chatham County, and had made arrangements for the Chain Gang to come to Tybee for the purpose of opening and clearing ditches for the coming season. “Petition of Mr. J. M. Laney to widen present board walk on Chatham from his cottages was reported advisingly.” I guess that means what we say today as “taken under advisement” – either way, invariably means buried. Note what was stated above regarding Mr. Harmon’s petition: it was “laid on the table” where I suppose it still lies. At the next meeting of Town Council, held on Aug 14, 1912, Mayor Lovell submitted his Annual Report for the FY ending April 30, 1912. “As is customary, I have the honor of submitting for your information the following account of what has been done during the year ending April 30/1912.

No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

“The annual spring cleaning up has been done, fence repaired, buildings were washed, new curbing put alongside Grand Walk where needed, and Grand Walk hauled with sand where needed. All Plank Walks have been repaired, and the Plank Walk on Chatham Ave East was entirely rebuilt of new cypress planks and 340ft of plank out of the old walk, this all being 5 plank wide, the balance of the walk is of 3 plank and was repaired out of old material. “On 18th Street from the walk on Chatham Ave to the beach, a distance of 1072 feet, a 3 plank cypress walk was built and has proved to be of great convenience to the people of the neighborhood as it is much used. There has been built along the walk two fine cottages. “New cement corner posts have been placed along Main Street and on Inlet Ave. “On June 26/1911, the Chatham County Commissioners sent a gang of 37 convicts, to open up drains and ditches and also to do some underbrushing. A new Convict Camp was made on the west side of Main Street opposite 12th Street. [So I presume these 37 convicts made camp with tents on the west side of Butler Avenue in the vicinity of 12th Street and stayed for two weeks. This camp would have been across Butler from the Fresh Air Home which was actively providing summer camp for children at the time. No mention is made of security measures at the camp.] The Town authorities providing them with water and shower Baths. They came for two weeks and worked entirely under the direction of County Supt West. While they remained on the Island until some time in August, the Town was only given the two weeks promised, and in that time, all the ditching and underbrushing was done, the balance of the time devoted to work for other parties. [Hmm, I wonder who these other parties were.] “The Street Lighting was conducted in a satisfactory manner, we still using the old style Kerosine Lamps. We are indebted to the proprietors of Hotel Tybee for the use of Electric Lights at the Lockup [a holding facility on the south side of 16th Street between Lovell and 2nd Avenues.] Next month’s article will continue Mayor Lovell’s 1912 report on town accomplishments. Again I say we are indebted to Mayor Lovell for recording these detailed accounts.

Ole Slo would like to apologize for being absent these past few months here in the Breeze, but the fact is, I’ve been lazy as hell. It’s part of living on Tybee. Many of you are quite active in “social media” circles. Things like Facebook, Linked In, YouTube, and Twitter. Ole Slo is no stranger to the rage either. This month I thought I would share some posts of mine from Twitter spanning the last three years. “Just swallowed a fly. Happened so darn fast.” Election night, 2012: “Bit depressed after last night. Did watch CBS anchor, Scott Pelli (aka Butthead) have an orgasm when the election was called for Obama.” “Joe Biden is an idiot.” “How can someone breach airport security? Simple. TSA is too busy feeling up little old ladies and your children.” “Charlie Crowley informed me today that he is a secret agent. It’s now official. Tybee has more crazies than any other city in America.” “Congrats to the jury in the Jerry Sanbuttski trial. Good job!” “Congressman Hank Johnson is a complete moron.” And what about that nut from North Georgia who is concerned that if we send more troops to Guam, the island will tip over? Jezz. “BREAKING NEWS: Booger Song to top 100 views by sundown. Search YouTube for Tybidiot and enjoy!” “Happy Birthday Roma! Oldest living local in captivity.” “Baby coyote caught in trap at AJ’s.” “There’s been a lot of talk by some locals that the TIPD may have had a hand in murdering the coyote found on the beach.” “We need to test these Tybee coyotes for rabies, especially in light of the recently discovered rabid dog at a trailer park on Little Tybee.” “Please tell me the feds didn’t spend 1.5 million on a study to find out why lesbians are fat.”

Thanks to spring break travelers, and visitors coming to the island for such events as Mardi Gras Tybee, Irish Heritage Parade, and the Tybee Wine Festival we continue to see less of a gap between our slower winter season and the busy summer season. We are grateful to have these visitors on the island to extend our season which gives our Tybee Island businesses a much needed boost. Congrats to the Tybee Post Theater for a job well done on this year’s Tybee Wine Festival! Reports indicate that all of the week’s events were well attended. Spring is finally here! Oceanfront Cottage anticipates a healthy, busy vacation season. Homes have been freshly painted, new landscaping completed and upgrades finished in anticipation of our spring and Summer Guests. The Owners of the homes managed by Oceanfront Cottage Rentals, LLC understand that they are very much a part of the neighborhood. Although they live elsewhere and pay higher property taxes for these vacation rental homes than the locals they want to be an asset to their neighborhood and community. It is wonderful to watch the care that so many of our absentee owners take of their vacation rental homes. They arrive on Tybee for their “working vacation” enjoying repairs and improvement made while spending time in their home and getting a little “Tybee Time” in the process. Many of these property owners plan to retire Tybee becoming full time residents of our Tybee Island community. As a property manager it is important to help our Owners maintain their properties for many reasons. Well maintained homes encourage Guests to be more careful during their vacation stay. Homes that are well maintained welcome our vacationers to Tybee whether the home is a small bungalow or one of those fabulous signature homes of Oceanfront we are known for. Well maintained home hold their property value. When the Guests arrive we try to encourage them to be mindful that they are now a part of the neighborhood and to try to enjoy the peace and quiet of Tybee. We speak with every guest (sometimes several times) encouraging them to know what neighborhood they will be enjoying. This makes them better Guests and better neighbors if they understand that next door is a retired couple who like to sleep in and on the other side of the home is a couple that get up and start working in the early a.m. We wish everyone on Tybee a great spring and summer. Lannie and I look forward to seeing you around our great island! Best wishes from Stacye, Lannie & the Oceanfront Team!

APPETIZER of APPETIZERS - Spinach Cigars with Tzatziki!

By Kathy D. Salter, Vice President

On the early morning of Saturday, April 13th, the members of the Garden Club had their Spring Plant sale on the grounds of the Lighthouse. The sale was slated to start at 9:30am but customers arrived early ready to begin sprucing up their gardens with plants and yard art. The weather was great and location was even better. Planning for this sale began in December with deciding the items to grow. Heirloom vegetable seeds, herbs and flowers were planted in late January with the dreams that Savannah’s uniquely warm winter would be the norm but that was far from the way it was..... lot’s of cold, wind & rain! The seeds sprouted at a very slow pace but with the aid of heat lamps and lot’s of love, we saw growth. Various members had taken the opportunity of growing the plants and nurtured them like little children. On this particular Saturday, the plants were ready for release to new homes but the “mother’s” kept a watchful eye on their children making sure they were going to nurturing environments. In addition, so many friends of the club donated seedlings from their own plants along with a few local artists that supplied their unique “garden art” pieces. We had a raffle for either a Rabbit’s foot fern or a handpainted plate by our own, Joey Burel. We also had membership applications available and had 8 new faces join our group. By 2:30 pm, many items had sold out and the sale was over. We left tired but celebrating a successful event. Planning has already started for next year. All monies raised from the sale have been earmarked for the continued upkeep of our existing gardens on Tybee.....76 Polk Street (the Recycling Center), the Blue Star Marker in Memorial Park, the Guardhouse Memory garden, and the Seven Flags garden. The Tybee Island Garden Club is on facebook so “like” our page to stay up to date on what’s happening in the club or becoming a member. No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

A spinach and feta cheese filling is wrapped in phyllo dough, brushed with butter and baked to make the spinach ‘cigars’, which are then topped with a cool Greek yogurt sauce. The result is a yummy dish bursting clean and refreshing flavors. Makes eight. These little guys possess three qualities which I consider vital for any cocktail/dinner party appetizer: 1. They are tasty. 2. They’re attractive (particularly if, unlike me, you take the time to properly defrost the phyllo). 3. You can eat them with your fingers. Don’t be fooled by the seemingly long list of ingredients. This is not a super complicated recipe (although it’s a few steps above the onetwo dump and mix dip recipes). For the most part, it consists of a whole lot of mixing & chopping. Tzatziki=chopping & mixing. Filling=boiling water, chopping & mixing. The only possible snag is wrapping up the cigars, and even that isn’t too tricky. So if you are looking for an appetizer to impress the next time you have company, give these a try. ` Ingredients: 1 -1/2 Tbsp. finely diced hot house cucumber 1/2 Tsp. fresh garlic paste (from about 2 cloves garlic) 1/4 Tsp. ground cumin 2 Tsp. dill fronds (about 2) finely chopped 1 Tbsp. finely chopped yellow onion 1 Tsp. extra virgin olive oil 1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice, plus more to taste 3/4 Cup full-fat Greek yogurt Salt and pepper (white pepper if available)

Cigars: 4 Cups baby spinach, stems removed

1/2 Cup crumbled feta cheese 1 Tbsp. finely chopped shallots 1/2 Tsp. finely chopped garlic (1 or 2 cloves) 1/2 Tsp. finely chopped fresh dill 2 Tsp. ground sumac (if available) or lemon zest Fresh lemon juice to taste 4 sheets phyllo 4 Tbsp. clarified butter (butter warmed until milk solids sink to the bottom, poor off the clarified butter)

Directions: Make the tzatziki: In a medium bowl, fold the cucumber, garlic paste, cumin, dill, onion & lemon juice into the yogurt. Season to taste with salt & pepper. Make the filling: Bring a large pot of water to a boil, and in a bowl, prepare an ice bath. Blanch the spinach for 10 secs, and then transfer to the ice bath. Remove the spinach and place in a clean towel, and then squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Roughly chop the spinach and place in a medium bowl. Add the feta, shallots, garlic, dill, sumac (or lemon zest) and lemon juice, season with salt & pepper and fold to combine. Set aside. Preheat oven to 400° and warm the clarified butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Cut the phyllo sheets into 6-1/2 inch wide strips. Keep the strips covered with damp towels until ready to use. Place a strip of the phyllo on a cutting board and brush lightly with the clarified butter. Place a second strip on top & again brush with butter. Place 1- 1/2 Tbs. of the reserved filling on one end, keeping 1/2 inch bare on each side. Carefully roll the filling in the phyllo about 1/3 of the way. Fold the sides inward and roll the rest of the way. Brush the cigar lightly with the clarified butter. Repeat with the remaining phyllo & filling. Place the cigars on a baking sheet & bake for 6 mins. Rotate the sheet and bake 6 mins longer or until the cigars are golden brown. Serve warm with the cool tzatziki. Seems like a lot of ingredients and effort but once you get into it you’ll see that the recipe is more words than effort and product. Pour some wine and take your time, I know you’ll enjoy the results. Tybee Breeze

Permanent Spring Cleaning By Kelsey Bankert Because I just couldn’t stand it anymore, I finally started carrying a little plastic bag on my daily walks. I kept seeing it on every lawn, along every beach overpass, beside every sidewalk. It was taking over, so I decided to do something about it. I started to pick up trash. The funny thing about litter is that the more you pick up, the more you see. Stooping over to retrieve one stray cigarette butt throws into stark relief twenty others. Then, out of the corner of your eye, a smashed beer can. Even further up the road, a pile of old sandwich wrappers. Our little island, with the right eyes, can look like a dumping ground. Why, when the city puts garbage cans at the top & bottom of each beach entrance, will people throw fast food containers or broken flip-flops over the railing into the dunes below? Why do people drop their trash directly next to the public bins? Why, when given opportunities not to litter will people go almost out of their way to do it anyway? Things are getting busier on Tybee. With warmer weather come more tourists. I would not stoop so low as to presume these welcome souls are responsible for all the litter I see. Littering is an equal opportunity crime. I only use their transient arrival as a metaphor for a transient state of mind. A state that leads directly to little me, with little trash

No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

bags, stooping to pick up little cigarette butts. I’ll explain. The casual visitor may only see Tybee as it relates to their few days, weeks or months on island. As if the island simply disappears when they drive away and then re-appear upon their indefinite return. Dropping a soda can on the beach doesn’t matter in the long term, because for the transient guest, there is no long term. Alternatively, long terms residents may also feel this way. When their own 3 or 30 year tenures come due, the island, in a sense, ceases to matter, because they are no longer there to experience it. Those who will live there afterwards, perhaps a century from now, may not be of concern. This mentality is, to some extent, not only understandable, but a common product of healthy personal selfishness. But to turn inward too much is to miss opportunities for selflessness – the thing that make the lives we’ve nurtured so fulfilling. In all events there is a deep import to what you leave behind and a valuable reward inherent in acts of foresight. To clean things up, literally, we might eschew those transient mindsets. After all, this little island was here long before any of us showed up and will, hurricane willing, outlive us all. You may be here on a temporary visa for two weeks or twenty years, but the island is not a similarly fleeting aspect. When anyone, visitor or resident, drops trash on the ground without thinking, the island will remember. Long after we’ve forgotten about the beer can tossed into the dunes, the island will be sullied by it. Which is why I pick it up when I see it – the litter all around us. It doesn’t make me a saint; just a girl with a trash bag who has considered, more than once, how beautiful this island could be in another 200 years.

Hello from the Tybee Post Theater!

Life Is a Marathon We rolled into Savannah March 18, 1980, with 2 cats, a ‘71 Impala, a U-Haul full of friends’ cast off furniture, $500 in our pockets, and a promise of a job. We didn’t know how big St. Patrick’s Day was in Savannah, so we wondered, as we drove and through town why the place was so trashy and if we’d made the wrong move in coming. 30-something years later we’re living on Tybee Island, a little slice or paradise, and have enough in the bank, investments and retirement plans to retire comfortably. So how’d we get here? We rented a house to start and I reported to work. My wife started job hunting. She found a summer job and then found a permanent job teaching high school. We saved as much of our money as possible and began investing. Though some might argue, we were very fortunate to have our landlord, who described himself as “the biggest man in Savannah,” living beside us because he became my investment mentor. He talked to me about the stock market and gave me books and journals to which he subscribed to study. He advised me on the first company I invested in, and I put $1,125 dollars plus commission into 100 shares of their common stock. It paid a 3.4% dividend. I kept the stock for several years and made a large capital gain on the sale plus rising dividends. We lived in 3 other houses around southside Savannah since then, each of which we bought and a couple of which we were landlords over for about 10 years, continued to save and invest, sent our one child through college debt-free, and have retired to beautiful Tybee. We worked the 6 parts of our financial plan - budget, insurance, savings, investments, retirement, and taxes - simultaneously and gradually and educated ourselves on how to get what we needed out of each. By budgeting for all the things we needed, including our investments, retirements, and child’s college, and living below our means, we got everything we had to have and some of the nicer things we wanted to have. As our income grew, our expenses grew too but not as fast. What this looks like graphically is two lines, income on top, expenses below, that are both going up from left to right over the years with the distance between the two lines growing larger all the time. This distance between the lines, or the difference between income and expenses, is what I call potential savings. And that was the beauty of the plan - i.e., ever increasing savings that could then be put into investments after a rainy day fund had been established. None of this is meant as bragging but only to demonstrate that financial independence can be achieved even on modest incomes and starting from nothing. So to me the lesson to be learned is live below your means, make a financial plan for you and your family and stick to it because life is a marathon, and have some fun along the way. Contact me at pefipl69@yahoo.com if you have any questions, or just come on over for a visit if you want.

Julia Sierra, who grew up on Tybee, was joined in holy matrimony to Rudolph Reyes, in a formal morning Episcopal ceremony at Christ Church Savannah on historic Johnson Square. 300+ guests from two different continents traveled to attend the service. The Bishop of Georgia, the RT, Rev Scott Benhase performed the service. He and his lovely wife hosted the rehearsal dinner the night before at their lush Savannah garden estate. The menu was African/ Mexican fusion their son is a world-class chef. After the nuptials the couple, family and close friend headed to Tybee for a Traditional African wedding ritual, Broom Jumping Celebration at Tybee Shrine Club. Music by Randy “Hat Man” Smith, food by North Beach Grill-owner George Spriggs present. The food and music was excellent. All in attendance had a wonderful time. Many guests were unable to attend due to OC=Orange Crush, a flash mob event of black college students from across Georgia and North Carolina. Traffic was a snail pace from Bull River Bridge to Tybee. Bob Bryson, Tybee Chief of Police and his officers did a good job in an overwhelming situation. The happy couple will live in Georgetown, South Savannah after a honeymoon trip to Hawaii. Mallory Pearce’s son James Pearce (on the left) ran in the Boston Marathon. He was present at the terrible bomb explosion at the finish line. Three people killed over seventy hurt. James a resident of Santa Monica, California was unharmed. Our prayers and thoughts are with Boston and the grieving families. May is National Military Appreciation Month. National Military Appreciation Month: What’s It All About? National Military Appreciation Month started as a simple idea; to gather America around its military family to honor, remember, recognize and appreciate those who have served and those now serving and to know the history behind it all. Subsequent formal legislation informs our service members that their country has set aside an entire month to honor, remember and appreciate them. In 1999, legislation passed in the U.S. Senate designating May as National Military Appreciation Month, with the support and sponsorship of Senator John McCain and Representative Duncan Hunter of San Diego and over 50 veteran service organizations. In April 2004 more comprehensive legislation was passed by unanimous consent of both Houses of Congress, H. Con. Res. 328, that May is National Military Appreciation Month and urges the President to issue an annual proclamation calling on the American people to recognize this special month of May through appropriate ceremonies and events. Post 154 is proud to present 2nd Sundays with the Songwriters Series. An evening of live, original acoustic music by local artists. Doors open at 5pm. This is a no smoking, all age’s event. The “Queen” of selling the most ticket for our “Easter Raffle Basket” goes to Nancy Lafavor!! Boy can she sell tickets!! “Memorial Day” the custom of placing flowers on the graves of the war dead began in 1866 and in 1868 General John A Logan declared May 30 would be a date to decorate with flowers the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country Let us remember these freedoms were bought and paid for by the lives of others few of us actually knew. They came from all walks of life and regions of the country. But they all had one thing in common…… love and loyalty to country. By honoring the nations war dead, we preserve their memory and thus their service and sacrifices to the memories of future generations. Tybee Breeze

Getting Better Missed you all last month (April) due to being out of town. I was kinda glad because March 2013 was not a very productive fishing month. Cooler than average air temperature (10* below normal all month) resulted in water temperatures to dip to 50*, the coldest of 2012/2013 winter. Pair this with horrendous winds that rotated around the clock weekly and it spelled disaster. The fish and guides were stunned. Good news is that two weeks into April the air temperatures are up which has translated into a rapid rise in the inshore water temps. Winds have calmed a bit and the bite is getting better by the day. Baits are starting to become plentiful. Mullet and a few menhaden are starting to flicker in the rivers and bait

shops are stocking live local and Florida shrimp (Call for availability.) Mud minnows have been easy to catch and our little glass minnows have shown up. Impossible to catch and keep the glass minnow alive but they are the key indicators where the fish will likely be in the spring. Here’s your hint, one word. Birds! Another mild winter (other than March Had a blast with from hell) has allowed our trout population Bill, John and Pete. to continue its recovery and the bite has been good when you locate fish. We have caught and released some nice two and three pounders. There seems to be a good crop of 15 to 17 inch fish. DOA and mud minnows have gotten the bite for us. Redfish have stayed in their tight packs due to the wrath of March but will begin to Pete put on a clinic! spread out into smaller schools this month. 12 pound red. Mud minnows, cut mullet, Gulp shrimp, jerk baits, flip tail shad, and spinner baits have all been productive in April. I really like my spinner baits in May. Small composite sharks have moved inshore. They include Atlantic sharp nose, Spiny dogfish, and Bonnet head (or shovelnose). My favorite, Bonnet head, feeds primarily on crabs and shrimp. These gals get up to 46 inches and over 20 pounds. I do best rigged up Carolina style with a 30 lb. leader. Hard bottoms near the sounds are a good start and farther inland I do well at the mouths of medium size feeder creeks. Cobia will start making their spring migration out front and into the Broad River just north of Hilton Head this month. Live crabs, eels, and menhaden are baits needed on every trip as they can be picky eaters. Capt. Brian Woelber does an awesome job offshore whacking the big ones and Capt. Greg Davis gets it done inshore in the Broad River. Call them direct or call me and I’ll get ya’ hooked up. Whiting fishing has cranked up and big numbers are being landed in the sound and rivers. Small circle hooks and a pinch of dead shrimp or squid get it done here. They must be 10 inches long but there are no limits. Keep as many as you like. Kids enjoy the fast bite and they make great table fare. See ya’ in the river! Capt. Cicadas, Scale, Aphids and Hoppers Members of this group are large and distinctive and are unlikely to be confused with many of their kind of insects. Some of the hoppers cand tend to fold the appendages of their wings in a down slanting position. Because they are jumpers, these hoppers might also be confused with the common grasshopper. Some of these groups do not look like insects at all. Their histories are difficult to stereotype as there are approximately 6,500 species that occur in North America. Cicadas - These are best known for their unusual life cycle and ‘sons.’ They are known to have a unique appearance. You are most likely to hear them than see them. There is a buzzing sound produced by the males through July and August which is a resounding vibrating type of resonance. Their nymphs, or young ones, can drop to the ground soil areas and feed on any roots for two to five years. Mature nymphs can crawl out of tree trucks and emerge to their short life cycle within these trees. They can occur in great numbers every 17 years in the northern states and every 13 years in the southern states. They can damage very young trees, but in general, they are not serious pests. They are popularly called “Locust,” but the name is mostly applied to a certain group of grasshoppers. Treehoppers - Treehoppers are mainly recognized by the distinct shape of the top of their head to the tip of their abdomen that gives them a humpback appearance. They can resemble plants, thorns and blend in with many wooded stems. They can be brown or green and most feed on plants. Froghoppers, Spittle Bugs and Leaf Hoppers - Mature froghoppers and leafhoppers are very alike

in appearance. Froghoppers can be usually green or brown. Leaf hoppers are mainly slender and tapered in appearance and have several colors. Both of these species are less than one half inch long. There can be many species of froghoppers that feed on a wide variety of plat life. Some are serious agricultural pests. Plant Hoppers - These insects are small jumpers and are usually 3/8 inches long. Most are likened to leaf hoppers and froghoppers. They are most distinguished in appearance because of the location of their lower antennae which is behind their eyes. Eggs of this species are laid in or on plants and the young as well as adults feed on most plant juices. They are a large group but on the whole are less common than most of the more prevalent hoppers and none are known to be serious to our general cultivated plants. I’m Just Saying By Alaina Loughridge There comes a time in the life of every phrase or current saying that it is time to go away quietly and die. You hear it so many times and from a variety of different people that it eventually loses its oomph and just becomes ugh. The English language is the hardest language in the world to learn. Why do we complicate it and make it more difficult with strange turns of phrasing that just become overused and irritating? Noah Webster probably turns over in his grave on a daily basis. For instance the word ‘amazing’; when I first heard how amazing something was I thought what a cool new word that is. Now amazing to me is just ordinary and not that great. Amazing has been dulled down to not something even interesting. When someone tells me how amazing something was, I’m already bored. Then there is ‘literally.” OMG I literally almost died! The next time I hear that out of someone’s mouth I am going to say, “I wish you had.” Literally is followed by ‘epic’, ‘awesome’, ‘like’, ‘OMG’, ‘seriously?’, ‘really’, ‘over it’, ‘f***k my life’ (honestly you are only allowed to say that if you are working Pirates Fest, St. Patrick’s Day and Orange Crush at a bar), and ‘ish.’ What does ‘ish’ mean? If my computer doesn’t know, then I don’t either. Equally over phrased phrases are ‘not so much’, ‘uh … no’, ‘I mean’ and ‘for reals.’ The worst offender being, ‘I’m just saying.’ Well if you’re just saying you just said it and I heard you the first time. I’m not stupid, but you appear to be because you keep repeating yourself. So like seriously. Before you literally die over something epically amazing, get over it. Really? I’m not so much feeling over phrased phrasing and I mean … for reals? OMG! Its all so ish! I’m just saying. Let’s move on to something else. Like ‘rad.’ Tybee Breeze

Spring is is the time for sea turtles to return to our the coast for mating. They have officially arrived. During this time, the male and female sea turtles will remain in the Pelagic area, the Greek word for “off shore.” Although they are a good distance off shore, this is a vulnerable time for them because they can be found in the shallower waters and close to the surface. This vulnerability can directly affect the sea turtle nesting population. Last season, more than 50% of sea turtle mortality, was caused by boat strikes. As a boater it is important that you are aware that the turtles are back in our area. Sea turtles, like humans, need to surface to breath and often times surface very quickly. Incidental catches, while fishing, accounted for more than thirty seven percent of sea turtle mortality last season. Shrimp trawlers, fishing within waters off the United States, must be equipped with the turtle excluder devices (TEDs). The turtle excluder devices are sewn directly into the fishing net near the middle. The set of grid bars acts like an escape door for turtles who are accidentally caught while trawling. The TEDs allow the captured turtle to slip out the opening in the net, while allowing smaller animals, like shrimp, to continue through the bars into the bag at the end of the net. There are regulations for size and location

of the TEDs, please check with the GADNR to make sure your fishing trawler in in compliance. Human interaction within the habitats of sea turtles also had an effect on the sea turtle mortality rate. Litter, is a huge issue with the sea turtle population. Plastic bags and such can be mistaken for food which becomes difficult for sea turtles to digest or even cause suffocation. Fishing line left on the shore or thrown in the ocean is a nuisance for the turtles in our area. The line can become entangled around a turtles’s neck, flipper or midsection. This could prevent the turtle from swimming, surfacing properly or even eating normally. Help the turtles by disposing of discarded fishing line properly. Hooking a sea turtle while fishing is common in our area. Many folks cut the line leaving the hook and trailing line stuck in the turtle’s mouth. While in most cases, a hook that is aluminum will eventually rot itself out, stainless steel hooks won’t do that. The trailing fishing line can become trapped around a sea turtle or cause the sea turtle to become tangled in under water obstacles and unable to surface for a breath. If a sea turtle is hooked while fishing, please notify GADNR at or myself at 912-484-3416. We can advise you of what to do. Enjoy our sea turtles! Tybee had a record number of loggerhead sea turtle nests last season and are hoping for a large season this year. Keep our beaches dark and free of littler so that our turtles have healthy habitat during the nesting season and all year long. The 2013 sea turtle season runs from May 1 through Oct. 31. Remember, “Sea turtle dig the dark.” More info. about nesting sea turtles in Georgia can be found by visiting the TIMSC or going to www.tybeemarinescience.org.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20) The future holds great things for you. It’s just that whenever you get close, the future snatches them behind its back and shouts “Na-na-na-nana.” Gemini (May 21 - June 20) A small packet containing 7 oddly-colored bean seeds will arrive in the mail. There will be no return address, nor any indication of what they are. Only one way to find out... Cancer (June 21 - July 22) You will walk into a door frame today, and people will smirk. Remember though, they’re smirking with you, not at you. Leo (July 23 - August 22) Try being positive and future-focused. Virgo (August 23 - September 22) Pretend you don’t speak English.

Libra (September 23 - October 22) Family problems again. It’ll be just like that Rolling Stones song, about how you “Can’t Always Get What You Wa-ant”, except that in your case, you can replace one of the words with “Ever.” Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) You will angrily tell someone that you are more than just a name and a number! You are also punctuation! Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) You will spend this week trying to get to the bottom of things. The good news is you will succeed! The bad news is the bottom of things is sometimes ugly, and often smells bad.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) You will put your foot down, regarding your turn at dinner preparation versus dining out. In other words, “if you aren’t broke, don’t fix it.” Aquarius (January 21 - February 18) Wink slyly at people, just as they are turning away. When they look back, smile innocently. Pisces (February 19 - March 20) Your concern about the International Space Station may not be one that NASA has considered, despite how obvious it seems to you. Aries (March 21 - April 19) Excellent day to crouch behind furniture, and peer over the top. If you can do that while wearing one of those Groucho Marx noses, so much the better.
