Cox Termite and pest control Service and management

A few questions have been asked pertaining to the monthly pest articles that we thought you would like addressed. We are sure many of you have given some thought of how our pest control company and technicians operate behind the scenes. First of all, we are given strict guidelines and standards that are to be followed as oer state regulations and state codes. We are required to attend many seminars and accumulate a certain number of continuing education hours furthering our pest knowledge and safety on a regular basis. The seminars that we attend not only supply us with valuable information but expose us to many experienced seasoned speakers whom are very interesting and informative. Another plus of our seminars are several introductions of updated products that are available to the industry. We also attend regular in - office safety meetings concerning things such as driving habits, school zone times, and any all all regulated products and procedures. This is vital information that not only helps the company and technicians, but keeps us in check with the whole industry and industry standards. We then can in turn, use this information along with our experience to service our customers with a better understanding of the type of pest control situation they may be experiencing. Our office personnel are very well versed in handing customer calls, as well as potential problem customer calls as they are up to date with all of your questions and what your problem pests may be. The technician specialist in that type of pest control will then return the customer’s call promptly and timely. All of these factors are designed for us to be the most productive and professional pest control service we can be our customers service and satisfaction as well as safety. The management and staff of Cox Termite & Pest Control would like to thank everyone for another great year and wish you all a Happy Holiday Season and Prosperous New Year!

Fall 2014….musing again about what makes Tybee a special place….? About this time last year I wrote a Breeze article about some of what makes Tybee a special place to many of us islanddwellers and land-lubbers alike. In the article I proclaimed, “Now that Mike Hosti has officially declared the end of summer, with the posting of the “back to normal” sign, we can all relax a bit and become reacquainted with this diverse dysfunctional extended family we call Tybee.” Some of those special features about Tybee that I listed were, “Home, family, community, vacation, beach house, ocean, solitude, beach, flip flops, bikinis, Coppertone, lifeguards, sea shells, turtles, dunes, sea oats, palm trees, fishing pier, resorts, rivers, marshes, tides, boating, fishing, crabbing, lighthouses, Fort Screven, parties, beer, wine, tequila, bar-b-que, festivals, parades, tourists, traffic, parking, fund raisers, weddings….? Well it’s that time of year again, however this year I am not thinking of Tybee just as the quirky little island off the coast of Savannah, but as the northerly most barrier island in the +/- one-hundred mile coastline from SC to FL. This coastal regional concept of the “One-Hundred Mile Coast” has been gaining popularity among some legislators, fishing/hunting groups, eco-tourist guides, real estate organizations and environmentalist’s groups, that are hoping to participate in the marketing of the “one-hundred mile coast” to promote their specific interests. If you “Google” the term you will see a mixed-bag of sources to follow-up on, which is what I did as research for this article. As a marketing concept, to call attention to this unique coastal Georgia region that we live in and to lure visitors and investors here, it could be a positive thing. However, this is not a “one-size-fits-all” regional area. Of the dozen or so barrier islands, only Tybee, Jekyll, Sea Island and St. Simons are currently developed and connected to the mainland by bridges and causeways. Also although developed, much of Jekyll is a state park and the barrier islands are governed under various types of ownership and management. So to look at this coastal region as some sort of marketing gimmick is one thing, but to try to use it as a “coastal overlay district” for land planning purposes is a concept that we need to diligently oppose. Also, the use of the “OnHundred Mile Coast” as a label to describe our coastal region is grossly inaccurate. If you were to calculate the entire coastline, including all the rivers, creeks, estuaries, etc. that are connected to the barrier islands, it probably totals fivehundred miles or more. Notwithstanding all of the above, we live in a naturally beautiful part of this country and should be diligent in protecting its natural resources. In last years article I had included a poem by a poet that has visited Tybee and I feel it captures the Tybee spirit….here it is again, a poem by Leisa Artus:

A long stretch of highway takes you there… Miles of marsh and salt-kissed air. Around the bend the lighthouse stands… Green gray water and warm white sands. Little houses, tropical hues… Brightly splashed, they welcome you ! Long walks, flip flops, sand and sea… Tybee simply let’s you be ! “The Power of Positive…” By Debbie Brady Robinson

It has been a long time since I have submitted an article for the Tybee Breeze. Recent events, however, have compelled me to once again hit the key board! Some of you may know of, or been following my face book posts about, Sammy Miller. Sammy is a young man, just 33 years of age, who has recently been literally, if the battle of his life! Husband, father, son, brother, nephew, friend, teacher, musician, devout Christian, and so much more - Sammy Miller is unquestionably loved by all. Seemingly in the peak of health, Sammy was stricken by two massive heart attacks nearly two weeks ago. The doctors told Sammy’s wife, Jenifer, that “for all intents and purposes Sammy’s heart was dead; there was no way it could sustain Sammy’s life!” The only hope was a heart transplant; a mechanical “Dick Chaney” style heart was being scheduled until a donor heart could be found for Sammy. Unfortunately, Sammy’s organs took a turn for the worse. A week ago the prognosis was very grim, . Sammy was on death’s door, and as Laura, Sammy’s mother said, “it’s between him and God Now…” Sammy’s friends and family, spearheaded by his sister Katrina’s “army of Prayer Warriors,” began an enormous prayer chain like none I have every witnessed. This huge “Army of Prayer Warriors,” that spans the globe, has been sending forth positive hope, thoughts, love and prayers for Sammy… and, as a glimmer of hope began to flicker, I began to think of something astonishing that I once experienced! Some years ago, in another life so to speak, I attended and enormous convention. There was a renowned motivational speaker there. I can’t really recall his name, but it was someone the stature of, (if not he) , Zig Ziggler, or Steven Covey, or the like. There were hundreds, maybe a thousand, of us sitting on the edges of our seats listening to this great orator! What I witnessed had great impact on my own personal life. I watched while the speaker scanned the audience, and summoned to the stage the biggest, brawniest man he could spot. Reluctantly this big burly young man made his way up to the stage. The speaker had someone escort the young man to another room where he couldn‘t hear what was about to be said. He began; “Most of you don’t know that young man, however, when comes back on stage, I want all of you to begin sending forth positive energy - in the form of good thoughts, nothing negative - just positive thoughts of any kind directed straight toward him. Please,” he added, “just continue to think nothing but good thoughts about him until I tell you to do otherwise.” The young man enters the stage. The speaker instructs him to hold out his arms, at shoulder length, as rigidly as he possibly could. He also instructed him to keep his arms stretched out no matter what happened. The speaker, diminutive in comparison to the huge fellow, tried with all his might to pull down those brawny arms. The speaker couldn’t do it; he nearly used the young man’s arms as a jungle gym and still couldn’t pull his

arms down beside his side! “O.K.,” I was thinking,” well he is a really big guy and in great shape!” The speaker asked the young man to leave the room again. This time he asked us to change our thinking toward the young . Now, we were asked to send forth nothing but negative thoughts, anything bad our minds could conjure up - keep those terrible thoughts streaming until instructed to stop! We all, hundreds if not more, began to send forth negative thoughts about this young man most had never met. The speaker, once again, asked the fellow to rigidly stretch out his arms. What happened next, totally amazed me! You guessed it, this time, the speaker was able to pull down the enormous young man’s arms - almost immediately! The power of positive thinking can be enormous! My husband’s late grandmother used to say, “desire is prayer,” and perhaps she was right! Sammy Miller, the young man fighting for his life, has had an enormous out pouring of positive thoughts, prayers and love. An unbroken chain and constant stream of nothing but “positivism” from near and far. Sammy’s students, and friends, started an around the clock unbroken prayer chain. People were signing up via face book for different hours of the day and night; I’ll take 2AM to 3AM one would say. I’ll take midnight to 1AM, said another, and so on and so on… The “Prayer Warrior” movement has been nothing less than spectacular - and it’s working! They pulled the plug (so to speak), on Sammy days ago - yet something miraculous has begun to happen. Sammy’s heart, you will recall, for all intents and purposes was “dead”, began to get stronger day by day. His other organs have begun to do the same. Jenifer, Sammy’s wife, shared some very good news just last night; “…we no longer talk about whether or not Sammy will survive. Instead, we are talking about weaning & managing all the things that come with laying in a hospital bed for this long…” Pray, if you will, or send forth a stream of positive thoughts for this wonderful young man his family. And perhaps you’ll take the lesson I learned so long ago with you in all that you, too; “the Power of Positive Thinking” IS ENORMOUS! Robinson, own and operate the Debbie Brady Robinson Signature Gallery and Hall of Frames custom frame shop on Tybee Island. Bundle up for winter fishing

Catching fish during our sort winter is easy, staying warm doing it is another thing. Over the years I‘ve learned a few things about fishing in January and February. First if you think you have enough clothes on you don’t. Second bring a few extras because if you don’t, someone who didn’t bring gloves will be wearing yours. A good base layer is critical, I like Under Armour cold gear it’s very warm, comfortable and does not make your skin itch. There are varying degrees of protection offered, keep in mind the warmer the base the less you have to wear over it. Keeping down the bulk makes casting easier. Spare no money when it comes to socks guys, cold feet make for a long day on the water. Spending twenty bucks on a good pair of Merino wool blend socks will make you happy, happy, happy. The wool blend keeps my feet dryer as they wick the moisture away from your skin. I’ve never tried the neoprene but lots of people like them. Water proof boots are a must to cover those socks. I have a leather boating boot made by Sperry, but they stopped making it. You can check out some sailing foul weather gear web sites and find some really nice boots. I just picked up a pair of white insulated neoprene boat boots, they look like shrimping boots but with non-skid bottoms, and that’s important. They also keep the toes nice and toasty. Don’t forget the head and neck gear, I use a variety of hats and neck wraps. Beanies, Balaclavas which is a full cover for head and neck protection, looks like a firefighters nomex hood, which I also use, they are very warm. Columbia has a nice balaclava for around thirty dollars. The ladies like ear bands so their hair stays in order. Gloves are a hard one to figure out, still have not found the perfect pair, but you got to have them for the boat ride. 12 No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

Winning redfish, Captain Stan , BFB and George Water proof and wind resistant are key words to look for when shopping. Just Google cold weather gloves, there are thousands to choose from. Outer wear tops everything off and again water proof and wind resistant are the keys words. I wear Bass Pros 100 mile per hour bibs and jacket, dry and warm. Check out snowboard bibs in off season for good deals on closeouts. A float coat which also serves as a personal floatation device is also a very good choice for your top layer, they start at 150 dollars and River Supply in Thunderbolt always has them in stock. All this adds up price wise, so shop smart, and build your winter gear collection so cold weather fishing is fun. Speaking of cold weather fishing we are going to be catching big redfish and going after some sheepshead inshore this month. The reds are bunched up and easy targets now, we’ll be throwing spoons, gulp baits and mud minnows at um. I like the big mud crabs during the cold months for the giant sheepshead around the structure. Stay warm and I’ll see ya in that cold river! —Capt. Tybee Island, GA – The Tybee Post Theater selected J.T. Turner Construction Co. Thursday as its general contractor and plans to reopen the historic 1930’s movie house early next year. Earlier this year, the Theater board of directors hired an architect and a pair of Atlanta theater design consultants, and announced a $100,000 donation to recharge the decade-long effort to restore and reopen the historic theater as a performing arts and cultural center. The selection of J.T. Turner, a prominent family-owned Savannah-based general contractor, solidifies the Theater’s goal of restoring and adapting the old Army base movie theater into a first-class performance and movie venue and begin showing movies – and staging plays, music and dance performances -- for the first time in more than half a century early next year. Turner has received more than 50 preservation awards from the Historic Savannah Foundation and 10 preservation awards from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and was involved in the restoration of the Tybee Island Light Station. Turner said the construction project will take about 100 days once permitting is completed. The Theater board has secured a $500,000 construction loan to cover this phase of construction, which includes heating and air conditioning, an electrical and mechanical upgrade necessary to operate state-of-the art sound, projection and lighting equipment. During this phase, a stage and permanent theater seating also will be installed. The funds are not enough to finish the theater with a proscenium, curtains and an elegant theatrical décor. But the infrastructure will be in place so that the Theater will get an occupancy permit from the city

and be able to show movies and stage live performances, according to Melissa Turner, executive director of the Post Theater. The Theater will likely have to rent or borrow theatrical lighting and a sound system for live performances, as well as a digital projection system and screen for movies. The organization hopes suppliers in the Savannah or Atlanta area will be willing to help with a short-term solution. The Theater, in partnership with the City of Tybee Island, also recently received a $20,000 grant from the state to rebuild the Post’s original box office and marquee. The highly competitive Tourism Product Development grant is awarded by the state Department of Economic Development and the Georgia Council for the Arts. The Theater will rebuild the box office and marquee, and install the commemorative engraved brick and stars plaza prior to reopening this spring.

Tybee Maritime Academy Sees Progress From Critz Tybee Run Fest Proceeds Due to the generosity of the Critz Tybee Run Fest Grant, Tybee Island Maritime Academy (TIMA) was able to add to the technology needs of the school by adding another Computer on Wheels (COW) with 32 computers. “This enabled us to have a laptop per child for the 2013-2014 school year. We purchased software programs and used the laptops in lieu of textbooks. The software programs are renewed yearly and our assessments for measuring student growth are all done online which gives teachers immediate feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of their individual students and their classes as a whole. Redirection and differentiated instruction can begin immediately! The students at TIMA have benefited from your contribution and will continue to benefit in the future. In times of limited resources, contributions such as yours make an incredible difference in what’s available to our students.”

To Go Order

By Judy O’Neill

Dear City of Tybee, When will the work on Jones Avenue be complete? Dear Maritime Academy Students, When you’re riding your bike or walking to and from school, watch for cars behind you too.

Dear Beach Goers, Thanks for a wonderful show this year. Lots of good looking By Judy O’Neill people on Tybee. And then there were some of you squeezing this year’s body into last year’s bathing suit. If you were born sometime last century, you may have learned and even practiced Dear Breeze Readers, Happy Holiday season. And keep reading. letter writing skills. The thank you note, the bread and butter note, the business letter, and Your friend, my favorite, the friendly letter. Judy O’Neill This year, I started several Friendly Letters. I never actually finished them or sent them. But the mere starting of them helped relieve some summer season frustrations. Here’s a sampling of those.

Dear Friend

Dear Bike Path Bicyclist Friend, Please remember that 2nd Avenue is also a street on which cars must travel. The dirty looks you give me when I’m trying to get home are most unfriendly. You might also want to think about riding single file if there’s a car approaching or following you. We do try to share the road with you, but that doesn’t mean we’re giving you the entire road. Dear Jones Avenue Biker, Walker, or Runner, Have you lost your mind? Get out of the way. Find another street. And take those damn ear buds out so you can hear cars coming. Dear Drivers on the Bike Path, Please remember that 2nd Avenue is a residential street with LOTS of bikers and walkers. Please slow down and share the road with them. Dear Drivers on the Tybee Road, For heaven’s sake, please go at least the speed limit. And quit speeding up when you get to the crazy misplaced passing lanes to keep me from finally getting around your slow butt. And, by the way, if you decide to then slow down again once the crazy misplaced passing lane ends, expect me to blow the horn at you.

The Tybee Arts Associtation of fers classes, workshops and Friday-through-Sunday art shows featuring our member artists working in a variety of media. See our Events Calendar to check out our classes, auditions, art shows and performances! Coming in November:

Dear Slow Drivers on the Tybee Road (and elsewhere), The new Slow Poke law went into effect July 1st. Please don’t hold up traffic by driving all the way to the Lazaretto Bridge in the left lane. Move over. Dear Doggie Owners, Please don’t let your unleashed dog run up on my porch and scare my princess of a cat who is minding her own business in her own little kingdom. And we won’t even discuss your unleashed dog’s use of my yard as his personal toilet. Judy O’Neill has written for the Breeze for the past 12 years. She was named “Best Local Columnist” at the 2011, 2008 and 2006 Breezy Awards and “Best Local Real Estate Agent” at the 2005 Awards.
