By Fran Galloway If you think you know Tybee Island and that you’ve seen it all on our tiny piece of paradise, you’re in for quite a surprise. Just ask Bonnie Hiers, granddaughter of George Jackson, Tybee’s last lighthouse keeper. “I was shocked! The houses on the tour were amazing. You can’t imagine what these homes are like until you go inside. And it’s incredible what people have done with those cute Tybee cottages. Love, love, love those funky Tybee cottages!” Yes, even locals are in for a pleasant shock when—only once a year--they get to explore hidden treasures on their island during the annual Tybee Island Tour of Homes. The 15th Annual Tybee Island Tour of Homes kicks off Saturday, June 9th from 10am to 4pm rain or shine. Nothing can keep fans of this popular tour from enjoying this festive architectural romp. Seven homes are featured that range from a Horsepen Creek marsh haven to a contemporary tree house. Two of the artfully restored cottages are from the 1930’s and will deliver the expected Tybee flair of color, creativity and funky fun. Even the old 1902 Ft. Screven morgue has seen dazzling new life, being connected

to the adjacent historic cottage a n d restored into a 2680 sq. foot home on its large, secluded lot with lush landscaping. The 1910

Beachview Bed and Breakfast reveals its gleaming, new restoration. And topping it off, is a stunning contemporar y built for entertaining on one of the highest elevations on Tybee that offers sweeping views. There’s something for everyone and surprises for all—local or just visiting— on the 15th Annual Tybee Island Tour of Homes, June 9th 10am - 4pm. Proceeds benefit the Tybee Rising Tyde Community Food Pantry and the Tybee Island Maritime Academy Charter School. Lunch is included and tickets are $30 donation in advance and $35 day of tour. “Tybee Road re-visited….!” By the time you read this the 2012 Beach Bum Parade will be history, even though Queen Wanda may still be wearing her tiara and we will still be raising toasts to Jiggs. Vacation rentals and tourist season will be in full swing and you will probably have only a few leftovers from your Marine Rescue Squadron Bar-B-Q Boston Butt sitting in the fridge. Our trips into town will be fewer and planned to avoid the daily beach traffic, but mostly our lives will go on as usual, hopefully without too many bumps in the Tybee Road. However, speaking of the Tybee Road, (glad you asked) there is one thing that I would like to challenge all of us to do something about. Let’s push the Local, County, State and Federal authorities to restore the landscape bordering Tybee Road to the beautiful historical tribute

to America’s war veterans (by cleaning up the overgrowth, replanting and restoring the palm tree and oleander colonnade) that it was designed to honor. I know that many of the new transplants and younger folk don’t remember the Tybee Road of the 1950’s – 1970’s, but all you have to do is picture Victory Drive in Savannah, except that the palm trees and oleander plants were lining both sides of the road instead of being in the center median. The palm tree colonnade was to Tybee Road, what the over-arching oak trees are to Victory Drive and Wormsloe Plantation. These are threedimensional icons the get burned into your psyche that remind you that you are back home if you live here or stay on as elegant memories if you just pass this way once…! Some of you may remember me writing an article about this, for the Breeze, last year. Five of the Breeze readers took the time to respond and offer to help; Henry Levy, Milton Coward, Catherine Smith, John de Jorge. Also, Councilwoman Wanda Doyle not only responded but contacted County and/or State Officials to get some advice on how to proceed. I appreciate the offers of support and inquiries by Ms. Wanda, however we will need a lot more local involvement to get this ball rolling. Also, I have eight selfish reasons for wanting the landscaping along Tybee Road restored. I want my grandchildren to have memories of crossing over the Bull River bridge and being mesmerized by the rhythm of the palm tree / oleander colonnade, the view and smell of the marshes, just like I was decades ago. So if you have interest in helping to restore the Tybee Road veteran’s tribute landscaping, please send me an email and if you want to checkout last year’s Breeze article log onto by blog. Remember: “If you’re lucky enough to live on Tybee, you’re lucky enough…! If you have any comments please go to my blog (listed below), sign up or send me an email and leave your, comments, complaints, etc…! Time to start tuning up for our annual Children’s fishing Tournament… Food, Fun, Prizes and Surprises will no doubt make this year’s event one to remember. Speaking of which… Remember any of these winners?

Not much to work with here (The Mission report has not yet been turned in.) Story goes along the lines of… Late night on Saturday we were called (I’m not sure by who) to help a small craft disabled in the mouth of the Savannah River. As more information became available this boat with children on board was out of gas IN the Savannah River channel. More information included that the Coast Guard refused them help (no emergency here, as they were anchored) and told this captain to call commercial assistance. Evidently he thought the price quoted was too much and somehow found out about us as a third option. The only problem here is we are like the coast guard… we only respond to emergencies and the captain has informed us they are healthy, anchored next to the jetties INSIDE the channel however, had him very “Nervous” (as it should). There was lots of discussion on the dock that night, which carried over to our last meeting; it has become obvious we have no SOP for this situation. We sent this to our Board of directors, and in the end several members went to their aid, saying “if something had happened to those children we couldn’t live with ourselves.” B y The time this is printed I should be THANKING all of you, who purchased a butt at our annual fundraiser, so… Thank You! 7 Tybee Breeze

STUFF IT FULL The trunk of your planning tree, the strength of your financial plan. That’s what savings is. Do you make saving money out of each paycheck a habit? You should because it’s only with a solid savings account that you can begin to invest and reach your dreams. You need to make saving for long-term goals part of your financial plan and part of your budget. For instance, if you’d like to buy a home and will need a down payment, or if you have children you want to graduate from college debtfree, or if you want to retire comfortably, you’ve got to start saving now. How much do you need to save? It depends on the amount you need and the length of time between today and when you’ll need the money. The math’s not complicated, although you do have to make an assumption about rate of return, but I can say one thing no matter what: if you start saving now, it will take a lot less per payday than starting sometime later. And if you have a longer time between then and now, you have the flexibility to take more risk with the money and hopefully achieve a higher rate of return, at least until the time you’ll need the money approaches.

Seems like everybody says they can’t save. If your job doesn’t look like it’s going to pay you more and you find it difficult to save, then think about the concept of “found” money. Let me give you one example. Forgo that $3.50 latte you buy every day. If you put that $3.50 in an account making 5%, guess how much that will be after 30 years. It’s not just $3.50/day X 365 days/year X 30 years, which is $38,325, a large amount of money by itself. After compounding annually at 5%, it becomes almost $89,000. And that’s just one cup of fancy coffee per day! How much could you save if you didn’t buy that $8.50 lunch every day but packed one instead? How about if you bought a less expensive car? Some call compound interest the 8th wonder of the world because it makes money grow like that. Your first goal in saving is to establish an emergency fund equal to a few months’ earnings, money you can put your hands on in an hour if a real emergency arises. Then start saving for other goals. At some financial institutions you can create separate vacation, Christmas, and other accounts, and often you can do this by payroll deduction so you never have your hands on the money. Some people find it harder to save if they ever touch the money. Stuff it full...your savings account, that is...and make it strong and straight...the trunk of your tree, that is. Save regularly and teach your children to save. This is one good self control habit you can pass along to your progeny. Delayed gratification is a good thing. So live below your means, save for a rainy day, and have some fun along the way. E-mail me at pefipl69@yahoo.com if you have questions. PFP (personal financial planner)

This month marks the official start to our summer season which means lots of beach time and fun in the sun for residents and visitors alike! Although summer is known as our peak season here on the island, Tybee has already welcomed many visitors for spring break and to attend one or more of the wonderful events that have taken place over the last couple of months. The Tybee Island Tourism Council (TITC) recently completed our “Less Than a Tank Away” contest based campaign which ran from April 20th-May 11th. The campaign was designed to increase awareness that Tybee Island is “Georgia’s Easy to Reach Beach” and less than a tank of gas away from our near drive markets. We received over 14,000 entries in the contest and gained 4,600 new subscribers for our monthly events e-newsletter. Our Tybee Island, Georgia Facebook page with over 108,000 likes continues to be an essential tool for us to reach those interested in visiting Tybee. We are able to promote Tybee events, answer visitor questions and engage our fans with fun and interactive messaging. Thank you to all of our “Less Than a Tank Away” contest partners: Ocean Plaza Beach Resort, Dolphin Reef Restaurant, East Coast Paddle boarding, MacElwee’s Seafood Restaurant, North Beach Bar & Grill and the Tybee Marine Science Center. Over the past two months, we have made strides planning this year’s Pirate Fest. The greatest of which is the newly formed TITC Special Events Committee. This committee is a mix of TITC board members, Tybee business owners, and industry experts all of whom are graciously volunteering their time. Together, we are committed to producing an event that engages and delights locals and visitors alike. With a budget approved and headliner booking underway, we are steadily crossing things off the to-do list. Most recently, we revamped the Tybee Island Pirate Fest website (TybeePirateFest.com). The new website is full of updated information as well as a few fun extras. Additionally, applications for vendors, entertainers, and volunteers are now available online. Finally, we are looking for volunteers to assist with the planning and execution of Pirate Fest. Our events are not possible without the generous help of volunteers. Whether you have worked the event for the past seven years or you’ve never been to Pirate Fest, we would love to have you on board. Volunteer positions range from seats on the Pirate Fest Task Force to event day assistance. Whatever your skills, whatever your passion, you can make an impact in the success of the event. If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity, please contact us or visit the Pirate Fest website for the application. We will soon begin our updating, design and sales process for the 2013 Tybee Island Vacation Planner and

TybeeVisit.com advertising. We print between 200,000250,000 vacation planners each year and they serve as our main fulfillment piece for the island. In 2011 we started offering advertising on TybeeVisit.com in the form of banner advertising and enhanced listings. Over the past year our advertisers on TybeeVisit.com have received positive and trackable results. We also offer pricing to work with almost any budget. Please indulge Ole Slo this month as I share a few random thoughts and observations of stupid stuff. First of all let’s talk about that insane stop sign at the corner of Strand and 18th Street. What in the world is up with that? Strand is a one-way southbound street. Eighteenth is a one-way westbound street. Just who are we supposed to stop for here? I know many of you will say, “The crosswalk stupid.” Well, if that’s the case, why wasn’t the standard and confusing crosswalk stop sign installed there? You know, like the ones that dot the entire length of Butler Avenue that cause everyone to stop every few blocks for no apparent

reason. Sixteenth and Butler is my all time favorite of that boondoggle. Traffic is a mess there on a good day. Add that crazy sign into the mix and it is a Sho-nuff recipe for disaster. Drivers are so busy waving other cars through the intersection that nobody is looking for pedestrians trying to cross the street. Just ask Ernie’s wife about that one. I have to mention Karaoke next. Some folks have no business getting up and performing in front of a crowd. I happen to be one of those people…I know what I’m talking about. And you 350 pound hotties who insist on wearing bikini bathing suits on the pier and beach, please quit! It’s very disturbing to young children, especially if they happen to be your kids. If you’re going to continue this, at least get acquainted with a razor. And, we still have a major problem with folks driving the wrong way up 16th Street. Joe Biden is an idiot. Til next month, be safe out there.

Just Thinking... Again By Judy O’Neill Sometimes I don’t have time to think, and that can be a good thing. And at other times, thoughts just pop into my head without my even trying to come up with a coherent idea. These are the thoughts I often share with you. Do you think that’s what Aristotle and Plato, Nostradamus and maybe even Ben Franklin and Will Rogers did? They were just sitting around or taking a walk and, VOILA! A thought. I’ve learned a great deal this year. I now know that you cannot party like a rock star if you’re a morning person and/or have a job. Even if you start before dark and try to get home before midnight. I’ve learned that I can’t proofread my own writing. I read it the way I thought it and not the way I wrote it. I’ve learned that if you finally have time for a little outside work around the house or office, it will finally rain. (Thank goodness because I am NOT a work outside type of girl.) I’ve learned...well, I already knew this...that if I decide to take a day to leave the island and do some things I’ve needed or wanted to do, twenty people will be looking for me. They’re usually the same twenty people I’ve been trying to talk to for days, even weeks, and given up on. I’ve learned that if we finally decide to try a new restaurant we’ve heard about, it will have just closed. I’ve learned that just when you’re able to see someone in a different light, the electricity will go off. I’ve learned that at your thirtieth (or is fortieth?) class reunion, all the guys you thought were too skinny and nerdy are now the hot ones and all the guys who were hot way back when are now bald and fat. I’ve learned that the amount of time it takes to do a job will always take to the last minute. I’ve learned that just when you think have some money to spend, property taxes are due. I’ve learned that the older you get the more likely you are to have a hangover if you have more than ONE glass of wine. I’ve learned that being with friends is better than a trip to Paris...and doesn’t usually cost as much. (That in no way diminishes my love for the Eiffel Tower or walks along the Seine.) I’ve learned that if I try to think, I’ll get a headache so now I just wait for thoughts to pop into my head. Until next time, if you have any thoughts I need to know about, let me know. Judy O’Neill has written for the Breeze for the past 11 years. She was named “Best Local Columnist” at the 2011, 2008 and 2006 Breezy Awards and “Best Local Real Estate Agent” at the 2005 Awards. Judy and her husband John have lived on Tybee since 1983 and own Tybee Island Realty. She can be reached for comment at tybeechick@aol.com.

Tybee Memorial Cemetery - Chapter 4 Edna Alpine Boyd Next to Alexander McKenzie’s grave, discussed in last month’s article, is the doll-sized grave of Edna Alpine Boyd. When researching the history for the restoration project, nothing could be found about this infant girl who died in 1911 at the age of seven weeks, nor about her parents, C.H. and A.E. Boyd. The stones marking her grave were in broken pieces and half buried when the restoration project began. The base of the head marker was unearthed, cleaned and found to be inscribed with “Safe now in the arms of Jesus.” William H. Clark When the restoration project began in 2004, W.H. Clark’s broken headstone was found near the McKenzie marker but there was no indication where it came from. That same year, city workers mowing the grass in the cemetery stumbled upon a piece of marble just below the ground level that turned out to be the top of a marker inscribed with the initials “WHC.” A burial ring of bricks was then unearthed defining an adult burial site without a headstone. One of the many mysteries was solved and the Clark headstone is now in its proper location opposite the footstone. A storm sand wash likely covered the brick burial ring and the footstone many years ago. This discovery which occurred days before the site would have been excluded by the new wrought iron fence led to the decision to do the ground penetrating radar survey discussed in Chapter 1. W.H. Clark was only 20 when he died in 1876. Not much is known about him but references have been found indicating he was a baseball team organizer and player and, for a one-week period, he was a Second Assistant Lighthouse Keeper in September of 1874.

The Rotureaus The more we looked into the mystery of the Rotureau “brothers who were washed ashore,” the better it got. In the inventory taken by Police Chief Lysaught in 1922, he lists three Rotureaus but calls it four graves. He provides no dates for the deaths of the three Rotureaus but later in his memo to the mayor says “The Eggert boy was drowned from a bark which was wrecked in 1876”… and “I am not certain but think the four Rotureau brothers were washed ashore from the same boat.” The Eggert boy clearly drowned in 1879, not 1876, and it was not from a shipwreck. In fact there is no record of a shipwreck anywhere in the vicinity of Tybee nor off the Georgia coast in 1876. According to family members of those buried here, they were not brothers and they did not die in 1876. Oral family history indicates that the graves were moved at some point in time from a close by location, probably when Third (now Jones) Ave. was cleared and paved in the early 1920s in anticipation of the first highway being brought to Tybee in 1923. Family witnesses to the relocation claimed that there was a man, a woman and a child combined into one grave and that the woman’s hair was as fine as when she died about 50 years earlier. The 1880 census lists a J.C. Rotureau living with his wife and four children “on the Islands.” The 1888 Savannah city directory includes a Caroline M. Rotureau, the widow of J. Rotureau. So J.C. must have died between 1880 and 1888. A funeral notice lists Caroline M. as dying in Savannah on March 22, 1890. “The friends and acquaintances of Mrs. C.M. Rotureau and family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral of the former from her late residence 14 Jackson Street to be buried at Tybee this afternoon at 2 o’clock.” A living great granddaughter recalls her mother telling of going on the trolley as a child with her mother to place flowers on the grave of her grandparents. Thus it can be said with almost certainty that Caroline M. and John Charles Rotureau are the C.M. and J.C. on the marker. The G. Rotureau child was probably a nephew who died in that time period. The descendants believe that a new marker stone was made based on the erroneous information given in the memo by Police Chief Lysaught. However, the “washed ashore 1876” has been so ingrained in the local lore and mystery of this cemetery, the stone was left as is. John Charles, being a ship captain at one time, has probably gotten a laugh out of the error. Bernie Goode has been writing for the Breeze for four years. Readers with questions or comments are encouraged to write Bernie at berniegoode@gmail.com

Many thanks to everyone who made last month’s Beach Bum Parade a success. It was bittersweet in the sense that it was the first Bums Parade without Jiggs Watson. But everything went well despite the rain. Thanks especially to our excellent police officers, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department and the Georgia State Patrol for making sure it was safe for all who participated and attended. Thanks also go out to Jack Boylston and his crew of volunteers for making it happen this year without our friend Jiggs… The City is working on its budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Our tax digest dropped again but not nearly as much as it has in recent years. The Chatham County Board of Assessors visited a recent City Council meeting to inform citizens of the sunset of a state-wide freeze in assessments. The end of this temporary freeze may signal an increase in tax bills for some. Overall, however, it did not lead to an increase in Tybee’s overall tax digest. As you know, we experienced the effects of the Atlantic’s first tropical system of 2012. It happened a few weeks before the start of hurricane season, something that happens once about every five years on average. Tropical Storm Alberto had minimal effects on Tybee other than a few rain showers, rip currents and larger than normal waves. Hurricane season officially starts on June 1. If you have not done so already, please make sure to sign up for the City’s emergency alert system for your mobile devices and e-mail. By doing so, we can make sure that you receive important messages about emergency situations including hurricanes, evacuation orders, etc. You can sign up by going to www.cityoftybee.org and scrolling down to the “Citizen Alert Notification Sign Up”. If you do not do this, we have no way of communicating important messages with you other than the land line phone numbers that we have as they are public record. We do not have access to e-mail addresses and cell phone numbers therefore there is a need for you to sign up for this service and provide us with this information. This will also be every helpful if we ever have to evacuate the Island as it will enable us to provide information about re-entry procedures and the status of the impact of a storm on Tybee. I also would strongly encourage you to buy a weather radio. We have an emergency warning system but it is designed for people who are outside and is not designed to penetrate to people inside homes and businesses. As you know, nearby tropical systems often bring tornado activity with them. As people in places like Joplin, Missouri learned last year, the warning time for such incidents can often be only a few minutes. Finally, the Chatham County Emergency Management agency maintains a phone line for people who want the latest information about impending storms. I would encourage you to save this number in your cell phone—201.4590. The City continues to work on making it safer for pedestrians to cross Butler Ave. and Hwy 80. A few years ago, we worked with the state Department of Transportation (DOT) to install signage in the middle of every crosswalk warning drivers to stop for pedestrians. The state DOT has now agreed to install warning systems on each side of every crosswalk that will allow pedestrians to hit a button

No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

which will activate lights warning drivers that pedestrians want to cross or are crossing the street. These will really help when cars are three or four wide on the road which currently creates a hazard due to blockage of sight lines caused by other cars. These will also be high enough so that they can be seen above trucks and SUV’s. We are optimistic that these will be in place before next tourist season. After Orange Crush, we have taken steps to ensure that should the event happen next year, it will not result in any problems like we encountered this year. We are meeting with some of the people who promote the event as well as Savannah State University officials to help provide some level of coordination and establish permitting procedures for future events. We also will continue to reach out to County and State police partners to ensure that this and other large-scale events are staffed with sufficient officers so as to ensure the safety of all involved. Have a great June! Mayor’s Night In will be from 6-8pm on Tues., June 5 this month due to a scheduling conflict I have on Tues., June 12. Please contact Clerk of Council Jan Leviner at 786.4573 ext. 103 for an appointment. Please don’t ever hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or suggestions. I can be reached on my cell at 844.8427 or via e-mail at buelterman@hotmail.com.

Nine-year-old Katie Spirides was awarded the Key to the City Nine-year-old Katie Spirides was awarded the Key to the City of Tybee Island at the City Council’s meeting on April 26. Katie, the daughter of Tybee Island resident and businessman Harry Spirides and his wife, Kerriann, was presented the distinguished honor by Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman and the City Council for her extraordinary efforts in gathering a very large quantity of food and donating it to the Tybee Island YMCA’s Rising TYde Community Food Pantry. At her recent birthday party, Katie, a third grader at St. Peter The Apostle School on Wilmington Island, requested that her guests bring non-perishable food items in lieu of birthday presents for her. As a result, Katie was able to make a large donation to the Rising TYde Community Food Pantry, which feeds Tybee Island residents in need. Katie was also awarded the YMCA Social Responsibility Award and the City of Tybee Island Certificate of Community Appreciation. “The Tybee YMCA is extremely proud of Katie and her dedication to social responsibility toward the Rising TYde Community Food Pantry and the Tybee community,” said Gina Casagrande, executive branch director of the Tybee Island YMCA. About the Rising TYde Community Food Pantry: The Rising TYde Community Food Pantry reaches out with help to those who live on Tybee Island. The group’s motto is “Tybee People Helping Tybee People.” Those wishing to make a cash or food donation to the Rising TYde Community Food Pantry and those in need of assistance are encouraged to call the Tybee Island YMCA at 912-786-9622.

The sun warms my heart as I walk thru the rising tides of our backyard pond (The Ocean). I enjoy this time year when spring turn to summer and our paradise island becomes a destination to so many. Say to yourself - this is going to be the best summer ever! I am going to dream bigger than I ever have in my life. I am going to do things I never thought I could. This peaceful journey is giving me opportunities to discover myself in a new way’s. The power for this available at this very moment. It can happen right now. Slow down take a breath and see the pleasures right in front us. We are not as limited as we may think we are. If I can think it I can believe it and if I believe it, I can achieve it! We have the power to take over the limitations that we have created in our minds and then we will see the unseen and know the unknown. Our true purpose will be revealed and everything will be exactly as it should be. We will realize that all our needs are met at this very moment and in the end we find that’s what we wanted all the time. Peace and Happiness. Keeping ourselves in this present moment of time has the power to unleash our real potential. Being in the NOW removes yesterday’s regrets and tomorrow’s fear’s. Whatever may happen today be at rest that we are not alone in this journey of living the dream. Become a dreamer - stare at the stars and look deep inside to embrace the presence of a power greater than ourselves. When we let go of it all we gain everything. Happiness is in our hands, we control the destiny of today. Seek it by yourself, try not to let others make your decisions. This is your path, your dream. What Goes Up – Comes Down… and It’s Not Good. Balloons are fun decorations. But releasing balloons into the air is littering. Balloons pollute the environment. Balloons that float in water can last up to a year before they lose their elasticity. Even when the label claims that they are biodegradable, it can take weeks or months to dissolve. Did you know that the mass release of balloons can also be deadly? Balloons are always found floating in our coastal waters and on our barrier islands. Jellyfish are a favorite food of dolphins, sea turtles and other marine life. When deflated balloons, especially those with attached ribbons, float in our coastal

waters, they look like jellyfish to marine animals. Dolphins, sea turtles and other sea creatures eat the jellyfish, choke on them and can die. The ribbons also create a danger for birds. The birds become entangled in the ribbons and become maimed or die. The mass release of balloons is now illegal in seven states. Georgia needs to be added to that list. Cameron a second-grader in Roswell, GA. started a petition requesting that the legislature ban the mass release of balloons in GA. Cameron n e e d s your help. Please go online and sign the petition: http:// www.change.org/petitions/georgiapoliticians-make-mass-balloonreleases-illegal. If you have a need to celebrate or memorialize an event, instead of releasing balloons, you can plant a tree or a garden, blow bubbles, light candles or make donations to charities.

Dear Fran, I try to read each issue of the BREEZE on line since I live out of town. I do have a question though that I can’t remember being asked. If Tybee has a Tourist Season, is it an open kind of thing or do you have to go to City Hall for a permit to hunt them?? Regards, Bill from Roswell Dear Bill, You have to have a permit. Experience Luxury, Oceanfront Style The roses are in bloom and gardenias share their sweet fragrance at the chapel this time of year. Weddings are scheduled throughout the year 2012 and well into 2013. Tybee Island is becoming an even more popular wedding destination! Many wedding Guests are choosing Tybee as their vacation destination while attending the upcoming weddings at the chapel, on the beach or at the Lighthouse. Romance is in the air! We are thrilled to announce that over 57 weddings have been held at Tybee Wedding Chapel! The beautiful brides and handsome grooms have been extremely happy with Ray Anaya, Director of Events for the chapel. He has earned 11 Five Star Reviews with The Knot! Carla Michael, his assistant, has enjoyed working with many brides who just love her! Carla and Ray show so much attention to detail while guiding the happy couple through so many available choices that they want to make for their perfect event. No, we are not wedding planners. However, being able to explain to the bridal party what works beautifully at the chapel takes a lot of stress out of the process. The chapel has hosted the Tourism Leadership Council luncheon for upwards of 120 Guests with a speaker from the Chamber of Commerce. This luncheon was quite an accomplishment! North Beach Bar and Grill served the food and it was very exciting to watch business leaders from all over Chatham County as they saw our beautiful chapel for the first time. Thank you Tourism Leadership Council for this opportunity. We want to thank everyone for your continued support of Tybee Wedding Chapel. Your words of encouragement are really appreciated. It is very cool to hear how many Tybee residents are encouraging friends and family to choose our chapel for their big day! No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

The Oceanfront Team and all of Tybee Island are ready for a really busy summer season. We are happy that most of our homes booked for the summer. We hope that all of the Tybee Island businesses have a great summer season. Vacationers arrived earlier this spring than usual hopefully this trend will continue into fall and winter. Most Guests are so excited about returning to Tybee (their beach town) for the yearly family vacation. Yes, our Guests consider Tybee their home away from home. Many return to the same home year after year. Others want to try a different part of the beach or a larger home. After our Guests return from vacation and tell everyone what a wonderful destination we are... their family members don’t want to be left behind for the next trip and start planning well in advance. It is also encouraging to see emails from all over the country (and a few from all over the world) requesting information on our island. Guests want to know about the South end of Tybee. Others want that quiet North end. They call and email enthusiastically wanting “local knowledge” and recommendations! It is wonderful to receive these inquiries and hear the good things that others are saying about our beautiful and unique island. Sea Kayak of Georgia has offered our staff kayaking adventures which we all enjoyed. It is so much easier to explain what it is like if you have enjoyed your day on the water. Lannie and I had never kayaked and we really enjoyed it. Captain Mike with Mike’s Dolphin Tours took us out to see the Tall Ships! What a fabulous experience. Tybee needed those new restaurants that have opened. Vicky’s is open across from the chapel. Wet Willie’s has opened on Tybrisa! As residents we are blessed with good restaurants on Tybee that make living on our island even more special and wish all the new businesses that are opening the very best. We want to thank the military families who bring their loved ones home to Tybee for that much needed reunion and time of reflection. As always, we try to make their trip very special and thank them for their service and sacrifice. Yes, we offer military discounts! Lannie and I look forward to seeing you around Tybee! Let’s have a safe summer and remember to be extra patient with those visitors who need a little help. Keep a sharp eye out for those pedestrians at cross walks! Tybee Breeze

We live in a crazy world, and our little corner of paradise is no exception. They say Tybee is like Gilligan’s Island on acid, but I prefer to say that we’re all here, because we’re not all there. That being said, hold on to your hat and take a walk on the wildside with me. May was Beach Bum Month, and the Coronation at Marlin Monroe’s kicked off the event in fine fashion. Jiggs was fondly remembered, but sadly missed. JFO was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Queen Roma. (Congrats to Jenny also for Fannie’s 20 year anniversary this month!) There was an extraordinary cast of characters present to celebrate the Coronation, as these photos depict.

This past month, I saw everything from “Cousin It” Donald Wayne, who is donating his hair soon, to wrestling midgets. I have never had so much fun in my

life! So where were all the “normal” people? Certainly not

The 2012 sea turtle season is underway! Tybee began the season with the 8th annual Turtle Trot. The 5K beach run was a huge success. We had almost 700 race participants! It was another beautiful day on the beach as the runners ran north, turned around a mock sea turtle nest, and headed south to finish at the pier. The sand on the beach was little softer than normal due to the tilling the week prior (because Tybee is renourished sand must be tilled every two to three year so that female sea turtles can dig their nests were entertained by the band, locally known, as Keith and Ross. What a delight they were! I want to give huge thanks to Mayor Jason Buelterman who was able to present the awards this year to our race winners. The overall male winner was Jesse Campbell and the overall female winner was Emma Phillips. Each year for the Trot, we hold a t-shirt design contest for students in grades K-8. The winning design is placed on our race t-shirts. This year the winner was Kaylie Odum, an 8th grader at Garrison. I would like to thank our many sponsors that sponsored the 2012 Turtle Trot. With your help and support we are able to put on this large event and support the Tybee Sea Turtle Project: Ocean Plaza, GA Sea Turtle Center, Fortune Recycling, GA Ports Authority, Latitude 32, MacAljon, Mermaid Cottages, Nexeo, Southeast Medical, Sting Ray’s, Doug, Allyson, Grace and Hank, Bernard Williams Insurance, Captain Mike’s Dolphin Adventures, Cumulus Broadcasting, Desoto Beach Hotel, Doyle Landscaping, Huc-a-Poo’s, John and Gail, Keith and Ross Band, Kroger, North Beach Bar and Grill, North Island Surf and Kayak, Ryan Captial Corp., Sundae Cafe, TIPSY Mermaid Ard, Tybee Beach Ecology Trips, Tybee Breeze, Tybee IGA, and Wayne and Rosie. I need to also thank Danny and his crew with DPW for assisting us with the fencing and getting Karen, the turtle, on the beach. Thank you to the staff at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center for allowing the “Trot” folks to disrupt the upstairs of the center. A final thanks goes out to the wonderful groups of volunteers that I depend on so much throughout the season. Thank you for assisting with the Trot and everything you do for the turtles throughout the season. Shortly after the race concluded, Dr. Terry Norton and the staff from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, were able to release “Karen”. Karen was a rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtle that had been trapped in a fishing net, off the

coast of Jekyll, and was treated at the GASTC. She weighed about 90 pounds and was very anxious to return to the sea. The events of the 2012 Turtle Trot and Turtle Release were a huge success. Thank you to the many folks who make this happen each year. Proceeds from the race support the Tybee Sea Turtle Project, the Lights Out Campaign, materials needed for nest management, the housing and maintenance of a juvenile loggerhead, and various educational materials. It is with great sadness, that I write this next part of the article. Almost two years ago, a baby loggerhead was found scurrying across the beach, during a rainstorm, by a lifeguard with the Tybee Ocean Rescue. This little guy had emerged during the day from a nest on the north end of the island. The decision was made, with the guidance of the GADNR that he was strong enough to be placed in the new 800 gallon tank at the Tybee Marine Science Center. All of us with the project, were so excited! Finally, we had a loggerhead to use for educational purposes. The name Salty was chosen because Tybee means “salt”. Below is the original notice sent by the staff at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center regarding Salty: Salty, a loggerhead sea turtle, was found by Tybee Island’s Ocean Rescue on August 23, 2010 during a rainstorm. He was a straggler, the rest of his nest had already made it to the ocean. The science center took Salty in and cared for him under the direction of Georgia DNR and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC). As Salty grew, we noticed deformities in the shape of his shell. We had his diet checked out and

No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

made sure he was getting enough calcium and UV light to grow properly. Despite our best efforts, these congenital deformities worsened. In November 2011 Salty began having trouble diving and started floating with his left side out of the water. Salty visited the GSTC many times for blood work and weight therapy. We started feeding Salty live crabs and jellyfish to encourage diving. We also built him a “playpen” so the fish in his tank couldn’t get to his food first. His shell deformities (crooked spine & bulge) continued to worsen through January and February 2012 and even the weight therapy stopped working. A CT scan showed that Salty’s lungs were skewed to his left side and probably creating his buoyancy issues. By the end of April, Salty constantly floated and his flippers often hung limp as if he were exhausted. The quality of his life was diminishing. Salty was euthanized on Tuesday, May 8, 2012. Despite his short life, he reached close to 70,000 students, parents, and island guests who visited him in our Coastal Georgia Gallery and learned about sea turtle education and conservation. For more info on sea turtles or the Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project please visit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center! The center is located at 1510 Strand Avenue. If you wish to donate, please call (912)786-5917, or visit www. tybeemarincescience.org. SEAFOOD CANNELLONI

Cannelloni is quite easy to make, and though you can use cannelloni or manicotti shells (round tubes), you can also use 5 X 5 inch squares of fresh pasta (wonton wraps), and roll them up around the filling. I prefer the fresh pasta. This recipe will make 6 servings. Ingredients: 1 box (8 ounces) cannelloni or manicotti pasta (about 12 shells) or 1 package of wonton wraps. 1 cup whole milk ricotta cheese 3/4 cup parmesan reggiano, plus 1/4 cup for sprinkling 1 egg yolk 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves 1 pound lump crabmeat 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 cup pepper (white if possible) Béchamel sauce, recipe follows Béchamel Sauce: 5 tbsp. unsalted butter 1/2 cup all purpose 4 cups whole milk, warmed 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper (white if possible) Pinch of nutmeg (fresh ground if possible) How to Béchamel sauce: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk until smooth, about 2 minutes. Gradually add the warm milk, whisking constantly until, until the sauce is thick, smooth and creamy, about 10 minutes (do not let the sauce boil). Remove sauce from heat and stir in the salt pepper and nutmeg. You can make the sauce as much as 3 days ahead. Cool then cover and refrigerate. how to crabmeat filling : Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook until tender but still a bit firm to the bite (al dente). Stirring occasionally, about 8 to 10 minutes. Drain pasta. In a large bowl, mix the ricotta, 3/4 cup parmesan, egg yolk, basil, crab, salt and pepper. Preheat oven to 350 °. Fill the cannelloni with the crab stuffing and place in a buttered baking dish. Top the cannelloni with the béchamel sauce and sprinkle with the remaining parmesan cheese. Bake until bubbly and the top is golden brown, about 15 to 20 minutes. Serve immediately. You can substitute any other seafood you like for the crab, to be more economical. Let me know how you liked!

car, Dad was asking us what we thought it was like when the station was running. We looked at the old signs. He showed us how much gas had cost back when the pumps pumped their last gallon. Dad’s Adventures took us on trails through the woods. To look at train tracks. To scoop tadpoles out of the pond behind his grandparents’ house. But no matter where we ended up, the first order of business was always exploring, asking questions, and laughing. I’m noticing more and more that those Adventures are a big part of who I am today. We never took books, but we learned about learning. We never did research, but we learned about history. We never prayed, but we learned about God. Adventures showed us that the world was so interesting and exciting and full of different things to do that there’s never a reason to be bored, close-minded, or scared of something just because it’s a little different than it is at your house. A few years passed and my brother and I outgrew road trips and fish sticks and toast with our initials in cinnamon. We got less and less close to our Dad, and I think sometimes he feels like he wasn’t the best father. It’s those times I wish he could be in the car with me when I roll down the windows and turn off the radio so I can hear the train go by. Or when I drag June 17th we will celebrate Father’s Day. Several years some poor friend to the back of a junk store to “check out this ago Stuart’s sons, Stinson and Andrew, gave him a special great old broken-down Coke machine.” Or when I just have the gift expressing their love for their dad. I hope you will enjoy lucidity to stop what I’m doing and relish the present moment, knowing that it’ll soon be gone. this essay and maybe it will bring thoughts of your sons. I don’t think many of the other kids got that at Little Road Signs League. Have a Happy Father’s Day! My Amazing Adventures with Professor Dad Behind Sears was always the best place to look. Sure there were a ton of boxes at the liquor store, but they were usually too small – and always too flimsy – for the task at hand. What we needed were the heavy-duty – corrugated –Maytag monsters that could really take the abuse. We were headed to the spillway for a day of hard-core hill sliding, and my Dad was lifting and tearing and shaking his way through the box-selection process. My Dad had box selection down to a science. My Dad had lots of things down to a science. He built the treehouse. He took us fishing. We carved the pinewood derby cars for Cub Scouts and the totem poles for Indian Guides. But what I remember most about being a little boy are the things my brother and I did with my Dad that none of the other kids did. Dad was the only one who really knew how to have a good time on a Saturday morning in October. As I got older and looked back, I figured my Dad was the only who really knew how to have a cheap time on a Saturday morning in October. But as I’ve gotten even older, I’ve realized that my Dad was teaching me probably the most important lesson I ever learned. I don’t know if he was doing it on purpose, but my Dad showed my brother and me that you don’t need video games or movies or the best bike on the block to have a good time. The world is so huge and life is so short, he seemed to be saying, that you’re wasting precious time when you’re not out looking and exploring and laughing and living. The low-cost Saturday outings eventually became institutionalized “Adventures” at our house, and nothing was as exciting as knowing Dad had an Adventure planned. Saturday would come and he wouldn’t tell us where we were going. We just piled into the black two-door Monte Carlo and rolled off to the Spillway. Or out into the county. Or up Highway 51. You never knew. I remember once he took us a couple of miles out of town to look at an old, abandoned gas station. It was a cool morning if I remember right, and as soon as I got out of the

Should I Be Alarmed?

The Tall Ships sailed into Savannah and we had a great day out on the water with Captain Jimmy Price as we watched the Tall Ships leave us on their way to Nova Scotia. Immigrating to this different country from southern Oregon I was completely caught off guard. If a tsunami, tornado, hurricane or earthquake was coming, everyone in Oregon would be completely unprepared. Grab your ass and kiss it goodbye would be all the time Oregonians would have. Thankfully, the big ducky O does not suffer any of those ‘circumstances of God.’ However, Tybee Island, GA certainly does. I have lived on this beloved rock for four years (two more and I’m officially a local ... yippee!). I have lived through one serious tornado watch. As most of the locals know, our alarm system has a monthly test on the first Wednesday of every month at noon o’clock sharp. They have even instituted a phone call warning to let you know the warning is coming. According to my most reliable source, the alarm only needs to sound for one minute. That tornado warning in March was easily five minutes. Every animal in the neighborhood was uncorked after the first two minutes. I was unhinged after the first three. Then nothing for several minutes as I held my breath … It did not help that Comcastic was intermittent. When the island alarm voice finally came on telling me a tornado was en route, and to “____________ immediately and to _______________ ,” I became alarmed. I honestly did not know what to do. If I left the island, I was sure to get bottle necked on 80 and get sucked into the vortex that is the Atlantic Ocean. Or if I ran to Fort Screven, I would never make it as I’m not quite sure where it is. Did I mention Comcastic was intermittent and only broadcast enough information to scare the crap out of everyone? What to do? Well, I grabbed a book, a bottle, and my cat and sat in my roommate’s bathtub. The cat was not pleased. So what do you do and when do you do it? I don’t know. What I do know is that the bathtub and a bottle was a great idea. When the alarm goes off on the first Wednesday, do not freak out. The alarm will sound, but the verbal warning will only come after you have already wet yourself and yanked your children out the ocean and half way up the beach. If it’s not the first Wednesday of the month and the alarm goes off, well, my bathtub can fit at least four. Bring your own bottle. No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze
