“Tybee has music….!” “high tide, low tide, old boat, slow ride”….. “my mama’s like Brer Rabbit, sharper that a brier patch, she’s a hurricane with a southern drawl, Scarlett O’Hara meets Lucille Ball”….” love the life your living”. What’s that….don’t recognize these lyrics…? Well it’s the passion of Jefferson Ross and the S ava n n a h S o n g w r i t e r ’s Series to acquaint Tybee, Savannah and South GA with these and thousands of other original songs, laced with home-made lyrics. No store-boughtfried-chicken songs allowed….! T h e creation of the Savannah Songwriter’s Series was inspired by Jefferson’s wife Tami, shortly after the couple and their six-year-old daughter Peyton moved to Savannah from Nashville in July 2010. They loved Savannah, but missed the songwriting community they had left behind

in Nashville, so she suggested and nurtured the creation of a songwriter’s group in Savannah. From a start with local musicians/ songwriters including; Thomas Oliver, Stan Ray and Roy Swindelle, the group has grown to about 50 – 60 members, that meet twice a month, to share their passion for original music. In addition to local members, they have welcomed guests traveling to Savannah from Canada, St. Augustine, Atlanta, Augusta and Hilton Head. Ross brings a lifetime of performing and songwriting experience to the songwriting series, he played in bands, as a studio session musician, served a stint as a staff songwriter for Curb Records and toured as a road musician and background singer with, CCMA Entertainer of the Year, Terri Clark for ten years. Today his roots are firmly planted in the muddy marshes of his adopted hometown, but he still does some solotouring, from Texas to Nova Scotia and across the pond to Ireland. Jefferson, like Thomas, Stan and Roy share a passion for making original, organic music and he hopes that the songwriters series can not only bring together local talented musicians, Continued page 4 Tybee Breeze

but offer an “I see it…so I can be it” experience for the younger generation to carry on the passion of making original music….! The Savannah Songwriter’s Series meets twice-monthly; 2nd Sundays @ Doc’s on Tybee and 4th Sundays @ Johnny Harris’s in Savannah. So grab the old Martin dust it off and come join in. Next time you’re tempted to listen to some store-bought-fried-chicken music, instead take a tour of http://jeffersonross.com to learn more about Jefferson listen to original home-made music and find links to other original music sites. Also, many of the members of the songwriter’s group join in with Roy Swindelle for the “Acoustic Jam” held at Doc’s on Tybee, at 7pm on Tuesday nights. Tybee Marine Rescue Mission Reports By Joey Solomon Public Information Officer

All Quiet: There were no called missions since last month. Community service however was another story. Our skipper Elliott commented the other afternoon “The heavy lifting is over….its all down hill from here.” This was a reference that the BBQ and the Children’s fishing tournament (our two largest projects) were now history. Both were good events, and the treasurer was happy with the BBQ and 90 + young anglers had a blast on a beautiful Saturday morning. Thanks to all of you that made all of this possible, from BBQ purchases to Donating prizes for the Fishing Tourney. “It really is the support of these local Businesses, and Individuals who really make this possible,” says Belinda Flanagan, and the squadron agrees. This was the 26th annual tournament sponsored by The Crab Shack, The City of Tybee, Squadron 1-A and one BIG HEARTED community.

I was talking with a friend of mine several weeks ago and I asked her if she still went skinny dipping in the neighbor’s pool. She replied, “Of course, are you nuts?” Let’s face it, folks. It’s just plain fun to get nekkid with your friends, whether it’s in a swimming pool, at a bar-be-cue, or in public at any number of nudie clubs or other venues. I know many of you think I’m somewhat of a prude; but let me tell you, Ole Slo has been in the buff with the best of ‘um. One of my all time favorite spots was Atlantic Shores in Key West. Sorry to say it was bulldozed several years ago to make way for condos. You could see it all there, no pun intended. If you’re in Key West, make sure you stop by The Garden of Eden. It’s a quaint little clothing optional bar located in the heart of town on the roof of the Bull and Whistle. Yep, right on Duval Street. For those of you who prefer more of an exotic destination for baring it all, there is always St. Marten in the West Indies. Make sure you stay on the French side, however, as the Dutch don’t go in for the nude thing so much. (Even though murdering an American coed doesn’t seem to bother them at all). Club Orient is heaven for those of us who like to eat, sleep, and breathe “No Tan Lines.” The Rev says the temperature is always eighty-two; although, the last time I was there it was ninety-three. But the number one spot to view the locals in their birthday suits is still Little Tybee. Remember, if God had meant for us to wear clothes, we all would have been born that way. Until next month, strip and take the plunge!

Southern Dilution

By Judy O’Neill

I am a southern girl by birth and in attitude. My actions and reactions, not to mention my manners, are southern in nature. And although I’ve done a bit of world traveling, my inbred southern-ness pretty much remains a basic part of me. The older I get, the more I don’t mind that. When I was a teenager and made my first trip to New York City, I felt a little out of place because of my background. I stood out in a crowd. I sounded funny. I dressed a little differently. Waiters in restaurants kidded me about grits and my accent. I minded that then. I wouldn’t care now. And then, after being away from the Deep South and living en France for a while, I learned how to tone down my southern-ness. I could adopt the accent and some of the speech patterns of whatever place I happened to be in. I could go places and people would ask where I was from. I liked that for a while during my younger years. Now, I just stay southern. I like my southernness. I’ve begun to notice, though, that true southernness is being diluted, if not polluted. It’s inevitable. There are more people from “elsewhere” invading the South on a daily basis. Tybee is a tourist destination and Florida is just about full, so we get lots of those “elsewhere” folks. I have good friends from “elsewhere” now. Some are from above the Mason-Dixon Line, others from above the Fall Line (aka the Gnat Line), and some from across the state line. They may not like boiled peanuts or know how to pronounce pecan in the true southeast Georgia way, but they’re still my friends. I don’t hear as much of the “Old Fort” Savannah accent on 9th Street Beach anymore. And the old Geechee accent is fast disappearing. Among the things I would hate to see diluted is true southern hospitality and the accompanying code of manners and conduct. But, you know what? I have seen that good manners are good manners everywhere, just with a different accent. Gentlemen will still open doors for ladies, pull out their chairs, and help them with their coats. Ladies will still say thank you for that special and noticeable treatment. Please and thank you prevail in polite society. Anyway.... What does all this mean? Not much in the whole scheme of things. It’s just at this time of year on Tybee, I’m reminded that the insulated microcosm I know as the Deep South is changing, maybe disappearing, and progress is...well, progress. Tybee Memorial Cemetery - Chapter 5 I’ll now conclude the series of articles on the people buried in Tybee’s cemetery. Walter C. Mitcham Nothing is known about Walter Mitcham. The fact that his marker shows his death in 1920, yet he was not included in Chief Lysaught’s 1922 inventory, implies that his body or at least his headstone was moved here from another location. Willam A. Jennings After Police Chief Lysaught did his inventory in November of 1922, there is no record of anyone being buried in the cemetery for the next 30 years. While stories abound among Tybee old-timers about family members wanting to be buried here, no one knows why the town officials would not allow anymore burials after 1922. But the stories include a memory that those officials were adamant. An exception was made in 1952 when they reluctantly allowed William Jennings’ ashes to be interred. According to a daughter living in California, the city finally opened the cemetery for that one burial and then closed it again. According to other somewhat reliable sources, Walter Aloysius Harrison came to Tybee sometime in the 1920s to escape some sort of connection with a New Orleans mafia family. The story goes that he left his New Orleans residence so fast that he left his car keys, wallet, and other belongings in his room. So where was he to go to hide – why to Tybee Island, Georgia of course! He changed his name to William Andrew Jennings and was even declared dead by an ex-wife. According to

the daughter it took a “special, special permit” from the town for him to be buried here. But according to other sources, his ashes went unclaimed by his family after he died in 1952. They sat on a mantle in City Hall for some time before finally being laid to rest in the cemetery. The above paragraph is based on hearsay from several Tybee sources and must not be given any historical credence. Mr. Jennings was instrumental in establishing Memorial Park in Tybee’s public land in tribute to those Tybee soldiers who gave their lives during World War II. A newspaper article on the dedication of August 28, 1947 said that “all arrangements [were made] by W.A. Jennings, Director of Savannah Beach Chamber of Commerce.” A descendant claims it was Jennings who discovered the tunnel from the Savannah River to the Pirates House on East Broad Street. His involvement with the Chamber of Commerce and establishing Memorial Park is no doubt the reason the town made an exception to its no burial policy. For the next fifty plus years no one was allowed to be buried in Tybee’s cemetery. I have been told in recent years of requests for burials being denied, though it was not known by whom or for what reason. As I’ve said in past articles, I have yet to find any record or recollection of why Tybee has barred burials in its cemetery since about 1922. I did offer in an article published a couple of years ago my own theory on why the cemetery was closed. But with the interment of the cremated remains of former Councilwoman Anne Monaghan in 2010, Tybee’s cemetery is now open for cremains. The City has adopted procedures and fees for the placement of ashes and has provided a beautiful memorial wall on the west side inside the cemetery fence. I’ll conclude this series of articles on the cemetery with the moving words of the epitaph by H. Hurley inscribed on the memorial wall: “THIS IS MY OWN. . . THIS HALLOWED SPACE. THIS IS MY FINAL RESTING PLACE. . . THEN LAY ME DOWN WITH EARTH TO BLEND, ETERNITY IN PEACE TO SPEND. AND CAST MY NAME IN BRONZE I PRAY. . . TO TELL THE AGES I PASSED THIS WAY.” So far two bronze plaques tell the ages that Anne Monaghan and Jerry Dulohery passed this way. Bernie Goode has been writing for the Breeze for four years. Adventures of Steve & Jan Fox Hi everyone, We left home on May 15th in our new(er) RV and with Molly the cat for a three month trip up the Atlantic coast. We plan to go to Maine for two or so weeks before heading south again. Jan was born in Maine, as were her parents, so we will be visiting relatives while there. Our first stop was in Wilson, NC for three days of rain. While there, we drove to New Bern, which is where the royal governor lived prior to the Revolutionary War. His house, called the Governor’s Palace, is on several acres adjacent to the confluence of the Trent and Neuse Rivers. It included the usual accruements of royalty, including gardens, a stable, separate kitchen, and servants quarters. They did not allow photos, so none were taken. Interestingly, two days before the start of the war the governor disappeared, never to be found locally again. Apparently he decided to cut and run rather than stand and fight and returned to England without most of his possessions. Unfortunately, the house burned down in the 1800s, so the current palace is a recreation with much detail. Next we stopped in at the Cherry Hill Park just outside of Washington, DC to visit with my brother

Doug and camp in more rain. The highlight of the visit was a trip with Doug to the Air and Space Museum (part of the Smithsonian) adjacent to Dulles Airport in MD. Jan and I last visited the museum several years ago and a wooden mockup of the space shuttle was a part of their extensive exhibits. Recently the mockup was sent to another museum and Air and Space acquired the Discovery. It looks as it did when it landed from its last mission and was fascinating to see. Among other items on display at Air and Space are Russian and Chinese MIGs, one of the Concord SST airliners, a beautifully rebuilt Enola Gay, SR-71 Blackbird, several Mercury and other US space capsules, rockets, and a Boeing 707 (the first jet I ever traveled on). This is a fantastic museum and I highly recommend a visit. It’s just a short trip from Savannah to Dulles and you are there. The web site is http://airandspace.si.edu. We are leaving our current location (and more rain) in the morning – a KOA in Coatesville, PA. On Thursday we drove to Amish country to see how they live. The Amish community in this part of PA is 20,000 strong. The visit included an excellent mini-bus tour, movie, and home tour. I neglected to take any good pictures, but did get a shot of a great bumper sticker. On Friday we took the train and subway to downtown Philadelphia to see some of the historic buildings and the Liberty Bell. Since it was the beginning of Labor Day weekend, we couldn’t get tickets into some of the sites (unfortunately including Independence Hall) but we did see the original Supreme Court chambers (there were only six justices at that time), several meeting places, Benjamin Franklin’s grave, and we walked a few blocks to the Delaware River and explored a bit. Yesterday we visited the ruins of the Eastern State Penitentiary, which was the first “modern” prison built in the US and was opened in 1829. It truly was a gloomy place. I forgot to bring the camera, but you can see photos and learn about it at http://www.easternstate.org. Tomorrow, we head to upstate NY. More to follow. We hope everyone at home made it through the tropical storm without harm. No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

The 2012 sea turtle season got off to a great start and does not show signs of slowing down anytime soon. The first nest in Georgia was found at the end of April on Cumberland Island. Sea turtle nesting usually does not begin until May 1st. Tybee Island, which does not normally see turtle activity until late May, had eight loggerhead sea turtle crawls by May 30 this year. Four of those eight crawls were actual nest. The other crawls are what we call “false crawls. This means the female was deterred and did not end up leaving eggs instead just crawled back into the ocean. Our first nest found on the morning of May 22, was located at the high tide line near 11th Street. Due to the

location, the nest had to be relocated to a higher spot in the dunes. Eighty six eggs were safely moved to a new nest cavity. This nest will reach the hatching window sometime mid July. The second nest was found on May 24, in front of Officers Row on the north end. This nest also had to be relocated. The nesting female laid the original nest too low on the beach. With the dangers of high tides and water inundation, the nest was moved to the dune area. This nest contained 105 eggs that were safely moved. This nest will reach the hatching window mid July as well. May 30th was a very busy morning for us. There were three crawls that morning! Nest three and four were found and relocated. Nest three is north of 11th Street. This nest was a large nest, 138 eggs were relocated to a new nest area in the dunes. While Cheryl, a Tybee Sea Turtle Volunteer, was working that crawl, I was able to located nest four at Gullick Street. This nest was too low on the beach and the 97 eggs were moved back towards the dunes. Both nest three and four will reach the hatching window in July. The third area we worked that morning was a bit more challenging. The egg chamber was not found however, the area was staked off and will be monitored by our volunteers each morning. Nest five, found on June 11, is located south of 11th Street. This nest was deposited in an ideal spot and did not have to be relocated. The hatching window for this nest should be towards the end of July. On June 13, nest six was located between 12th and 13th Street. It too, was left in a good spot and did not need to be relocated. Nest seven, located at 8th Street was moved to a higher spot in the dunes. This nest contained 144 eggs. The eighth nest is located just south of 9th Street and was left in the original location. The hatching window for these nest will be sometime in August. The average number of sea turtle nest that Tybee has each season is about seven. We have passed that average and at the time of writing are not even half way through the nesting part of the season. Our highest number of nest in one season was 14, back in 1995. Maybe we will break that record this year. Statewide there are 963 sea turtle nest so far this season. We are hoping to finish the season as strong as it started. We could possibly have another record year nesting in Georgia. I would like to thank all the volunteers and the Tybee DPW for their help with nest surveys each day, monitoring of our existing nest and working with stranded sea turtles. I depend on each of you throughout the season. You can follow The Tybee Sea Turtle Project on Facebook. We keep updated information on new activity and will let you know when nest excavations are planned for later in the season. More information can be found at www.tybeemarinescience.org. cotton rabbits and ground squirrels. They can also transmit diseases to humans and many other animals. They are also jumpers.

Fleas Fleas have a tendency to occur in early spring and throughout the warmer months of the year. Their size can be about 3/16 of an inch long. They are known to jump many times their length. Some other characteristics of these insects include living and nesting in carpets, furniture, and inbetween wooden floor cracks and are considered to be blood sucking parasites. They have been known to feed on birds and other mammals. There are several diseases that can be transmitted from them, some of which are typhus and bubonic plague. They also carry tape worms from rodents, cats, dogs, and can transmit them to humans. Dog and cat fleas Dog and cat fleas are common in the same vicinity and these, as most types, rest within their cocoon stage until any vibration causes them to emerge. They can prey on these hosts and many other animals. There is a similar type called “Squirrel Flea.” These creatures that we so often think of as an enhancement to our surrounding, lilt and bounce around our trees and landscape areas as do many of our outside friends in the wild and can deposit many fleas and flea eggs for us and our domestic pets to be exposed to.

Shrimp Fleas Several years ago I was called to service one of my clients that had described their problem as strange unidentifiable insects. Upon my investigation I was a bit perplexed as these were new to me. I brought samples of these insects into the office and by chance there was an entomology friend of the company visiting and diagnosed them as Shrimp Fleas. They do look like a cross between a tiny shrimp and a large flea. They are reddish in color and can be found near ditches and low lying areas with standing water. They are basically controlled with a proper pesticide application with residual properties. I’ve not found them to be common in our area, but just the same, they do exist. Maintenance and control Flea control consists of a regimented program that includes a thorough inspection of the premises both inside and out for a proper evaluation. The most important factor is customer assistance. It is wise to incorporate rodent and flea control simultaneously. A spot treatment is also recommended inside of the home as well as a perimeter outside treatment. Pets should be treated accordingly by your personal veterinarian. It is most helpful for the homeowner to vacuum all areas and remove the bag to an outside garbage facility. Sanitation is most important in the control of these insects and a good carpet cleaning is also recommended before any treatment. We in the industry incorporate a flea egg growth regulator which can inhibit the young flea egg stage from the emergence of new fleas. This has proven to be most helpful in the control of these insects.

Oriental Rat Flea An original Until next time, rat flea differs Johnny “the bugman” Herald from dog Let’s work the bugs out! and cat fleas. They are most common with the Norway rat and can be found on this rat and many other species, including No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

Happy Fourth of July. Enjoy your time off and take a moment to remember what this holiday is all about. This is another reason to be proud to be an American. On June 11th I was pleased to present the Police Officer of the Year Award to Senior Patrol Officer Matthew Wilhoite of our Tybee Island Police Department. Matthew is an outstanding police officer and someone we can all be proud of. It was also with great pleasure that I presented Legionnaire Ronnie Tatum with our Legionnaire of the Year Award. Ronnie has worked very this year helping with our fish fries, steak dinners and a lot of work around the post. He definitely earned the title of Legionnaire of the Year. Our Father’s Day steak dinners gave Post 154 another chance to say thank you to our members and the City of Tybee Island. It also gave us a chance to thank our Dads for being Dad. As usual it took a lot of effort to make this a success and thanks go out to all of the Legionnaires, Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion members who helped prepare the meals, serve the meals, and wash the dishes and clean-up afterwards. It was definitely a group operation. Our meeting on July 9th will be to install our

Hello Auxiliary Members and Breeze Readers, The entire Auxiliary would like to extend extreme gratitude and appreciation to Debbie Motes, Past Second President, and Lynn Marston, Past Treasurer. Debbie has been a contentious leader for the Auxiliary. And Lynn has donated her time as our Treasurer for the last four years and instrumental in collating our recent cookbooks. We welcome Dianne Sasser as our new Second Vice President and Anne Miller will serve as our new Treasurer. New Officers will be installed at the July 9th regular scheduled meeting. Post activities for the month of June included a steak dinner honoring Father’s Day. Dads seemed to enjoy the attention (and the steak) and Mom enjoyed not having to prepare it. As usual, it takes a great deal of effort to make this a success and our thanks go out to Legionnaires, Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion members who helped

VICHYSSOISE A simply heavenly American creation...by a French chef, of course. In memory of the potato soup his mother used to serve him as a boy in Vichy, France, Louis Diat created it as a chilled first course-and originally (according to the famous food writer George Lang) intended to add a bit of tomato puree’ to it... though he succumbed to popular demand when the white version became the rage. Chef-writer Anthony Bourdain in Kitchen Confidential confesses that it was a bowl of Vichyssoise that determined his future: he had the nerve, as a child, to order it in a Normandy restaurant (his brother held out for Campbell’s Chicken-Noodle or nothing) and discovered there were taste dimensions in this strange looking concoction that were beyond anything he had ever had. Thus it is that Diat’s soup is fated to boomerang back and forth between France and the U.S. I also had this soup as a young child and the first spoonful from a bowl nestled in ice has lasted as a life-long culinary memory. Ingredients: 4 Cups chopped leeks, white part only 4 Cups diced potatoes 6 Cups (good) water, substitute a little vegetable or chicken broth for added richness, I prefer the water. 1/2 Cup heavy cream or sour cream, I like to make a blend, 2 to 1. Salt and white pepper to taste Chopped fresh chives Here’s what to do: In a 3 or 4 quart saucepan bring potatoes and leeks to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and partially cover for about 20 to 30 minutes until vegetables are tender. Puree’ the soup carefully. Taste for seasoning, sometimes I add a squeeze of lemon to give it a little zing. Chill soup for at least 2 hours, overnight is best. Stir in cream or cream-sour cream mix. Correct seasoning. Serve in bowls nested in ice, sprinkle with the chives. Hope you enjoy as much as I do. This will feed 4 people or 2 little piggies.

Hope you enjoy, Chef Espy Sighs or Moans ~ chefespy@bellsouth.net No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

Alone Time

Some people fear it, some crave it. For some too much time alone makes them feel lonely or unwanted. I guess too much time with your own thoughts can be a dangerous thing. It’s a time to get your thoughts together. To pray. To meditate. A time to breathe deeply and be at peace. Don’t let anger and regret fill this precious gift of time. “Why do nations rage and the peoples meditate a vain thing?” Psalms 2:1. Instead replace those thoughts with remembering good things. Those moments in your life that made you so happy that you took mental pictures. Use your time to envision more happy times ahead. See yourself achieving your life goals. Just because something isn’t happening for you right now, doesn’t mean that it will never happen. Remember to allow others their time alone too. Not allowing another their time because of your own insecurities is cruel. Use this time to think about God’s word. The simple beauty of a simple truth. Think about how He decided that you should be born in this world... how He created all this beauty of nature, of love so you could enjoy life here, enjoy His blessings upon your life. “This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.” Joshua 1:8 Meditation is a well spread concept in the world today and we all meditate on certain things whether we realize or not. Meditation is when you stop and think about the unchangeable things; we meditate (think deeply, make connections with their everyday life) upon Holy words because our Creator said that the Earth and Heaven will pass away but His Words will never pass away. Who would have believed that 2000 years later, this Jesus of Nazareth will have conquered the world with His life? He has, because He is the very essence of life! Love is: The Way, The Truth and The Life.

Peace… Mandy Alexander, Tybee Island Local Inspiration.

We have thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful weather of late here at The Lighthouse Inn. Even with the muchneeded rain we finally received, we and our guests have been able to spend many a peaceful evening relaxing on the porch here on our quiet corner of Tybee’s calm north end. In fact, a recent “birder” guest remarked on the surprising sighting of some of our more elusive species, including the Loggerhead Shrike, the Eastern King Bird, and Cattle Egrets. It’s always heartening to learn new things about Tybee from our guests. In other news, Stuart’s Father’s Day was made one of his best ever with the arrival of his sons, Stinson, who resides in Memphis, and Andrew, of New Orleans, for a weekend visit. Though we wish they could have stayed longer, we made many wonderful new memories as well as reminisced over plenty of old ones during their stay. Finally, we are honored to have been recommended for accommodations in the June 2012 issue of Southern Living in an article entitled “Find Your Perfect Little Beach Town.” Our response has already been phenomenal! We look forward to meeting each and every one of our new guests as they experience the Tybee that we all know and love. Comments: Thanks for being such great hosts. Very much enjoyed our stay and look forward to another visit. We are relaxed and refreshed! ~ Jim and Glenda, Brownsburg, IN It is a wonderful bed & breakfast inn you have. Snow White and the Huntsmen:

Charlize Theron is the Goddess of all mankind! She is so magnificent in this movie that all of the other actors could have sat there eating Frito’s and it would still be the best movie you have seen all year. I love that woman and she is PHENONMENAL in this movie!!!! She is evil, but if you don’t love her your heart is stone. Go see this movie in the theater. 3D if you can swing it. It’s epic and visually fantastic. Kristen Stewart (of Twilight blah) is good but there is something missing. She’s close, but she can’t quite get there. I can’t quite explain it, but something is missing with her. Helmsworth is decent, but if you got a good body and decent hair, whatever. This film is all Theron. Go see and come undone. Loved every second of it and you will too! I promise! I give this movie four bottles of Dom Perignon (because it is right next to the fantabulousness of Game of Thrones and Charlize is nothing short of stunning) and one bottle of Tattinger (because K. Stew was good but she wasn’t Dom P good).

The Grey:

Ah Liam. I love you. I really do, but you never listen to me. The Grey was similar to watching grass grow, but less exciting. On the cover of the DVD Rolling Stone called it “Terrifically exciting! And “Hold on Tight” It’s a true call of the wild.” Please. Rolling Stone must have been ‘rolling’ when they saw this movie. It took me three goes before I could finish the damn thing and it was tedious. All introspection and no action. Granted, there was a good deal of blood and goo (which I love) however, blood and goo can only get you so far. My boyfriend should be kissing my ass that I made him watch Hunger Games that day. Plane crash, survivors and wolves. I’m bored already. Liam, you get no more chances from me. I give this movie four bottles of Skol Gin (because it really did suck) and one bottle of

Tanqueray (because I do sincerely and will always love Liam Neeson and yes, I will watch you until the day I drop).

BUILD THAT PYRAMID, KING TUT Everybody afraid to invest raise their hand. Notice I didn’t say what to invest in, and the truth is nearly all of us invest in something. Many people are averse to investing in stocks, I know that; but the same people will invest in a house or business and not think twice, even though the risk of these investments can exceed that of the stock market, evidenced by the precipitous fall in house prices. Why are people afraid of the stock market? Statistically you have about a 70% chance of making money in it, and over long time periods no other investment has outperformed stocks. Stocks are very liquid too, meaning you can get in and out of them easily and quickly. I think people are afraid because of the most important factors in making money in stocks - selection and timing - and most don’t think they know enough to do this well. Selection is more important because good selection will overcome poor timing over the long haul, and that’s how you should be investing. Of course you can defer to the judgment of a professional manager on these matters by buying into mutual funds or hiring an investment advisor; but if you want to learn on your own, begin your studying right now, find a mentor who can help you, or join an investment club. Unfortunately, many people end up doing these things backwards because of what I call the next door neighbor syndrome. This is when you listen to your neighbors talk about a hot stock and how they’re making money hand over fist. Eventually you get sucked in and buy it too. What you didn’t account for is that your neighbor knows even less than you about the company and the stock market itself, but because you failed to do your due diligence, you ended up buying when the stock price was wildly inflated. I know many people who were living examples of this when the tech bubble burst a decade ago. They lost over 90% of their invested money. What’s the best investment? Everybody’s different and everybody has a different tolerance for risk, which I define as your ability to sleep without worry at night...and you need to follow the KISS principle with the first rule being don’t invest in something you don’t understand. The choices are huge: CD’s, bonds, stocks, real estate, art, commodities like gold, derivatives, collectibles, and many others. How do you build your pyramid? What you want to do, to increase your portfolio’s rate of return without unduly increasing your level of risk, is to put most of your money into relatively safe investments and then put less into the riskier ones until you reach the riskiest and put the least amount of money into that. This ends up looking like a pyramid if you make a stack of blocks, each representing how much you’ve invested at each level of risk starting with the least risky on bottom and the most risky on top. So live below your means, be like King Tut building that pyramid, and have some fun along the way. Contact me at pefipl69@yahoo.com if you have investment questions. Greetings from the Tybee Post Theater! We are delighted to bring you up-to-date as to where we’ve been, where we are and what lies ahead in the future. 2012 began as a record year for Tybee Island when we were officially awarded the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Gathering of People Wearing Swim Caps” as part of the annual Tybee Polar Plunge on January 1st. It was a beautiful, sunny and unusually warm day when 2,049 people stood within a fenced area on the south beach for over ten minutes, donning their swim caps and costumes, and tossing dozens of rainbowcolored beach balls up into the sky. Thousands more gathered on the pier and the beach to cheer on their

friends, family and neighbors. The 2012 Tybee Polar Plunge drew more locals from Tybee Island then ever before. We also welcomed visitors from thirty-six states and three countries and ended up raising over $25,000 for the Tybee Post Theater! If you didn’t get your official 2012 Polar Plunge and Guinness World Record longsleeve t-shirt, or would like to order more, they are still available for sale on our website! In April, the Theater hosted the 4th Annual Tybee Wine Festival, with four fun-filled days of wine and culinary events. This year we premiered “Seafood School: From Daufuskie to Tybee,” featuring five top regional cooks who shared recipes and their culinary expertise to an intimate sold-out crowd at the Tybee Lite Shrine Club. Other events included the ever-popular “Evening of Oysters & Wine,” hosted once again by Marlin Monroe’s Surfside Grill; the festival’s signature “Grand Wine Tasting” held on the beautiful grounds of the Tybee Lighthouse; and a scrumptious and relaxing Sunday Champagne Brunch. The 2012 Festival attracted visitors from 25 states and raised over $35,000 for the Theater. So, where is all of this money going and how is it being used? Over the last several years the theater installed a new roof, including wood decking and steel, hurricane rods for additional support and new window sills. We also installed new custom-milled windows and doors based on historic images, three new emergency exit doors, door hardware and thresholds and new louvered vents in the back of the theater to help with air circulation. This past May, we began construction on the interior of the theater. Our attention will be focused on ADA restrooms (yes, we are installing bathrooms in the theater!), HVAC in the lobby, a concessions space, a partial electrical upgrade, a wall that will separate the lobby from the auditorium, and preliminary work on the upstairs office space. Our goal is to begin work on a final electrical upgrade and HVAC in the auditorium by the end of this year. Our next event will be the first Tybee Bluegrass, BBQ and Craft Beer Festival, to be held in midSeptember at the Tybee Lighthouse! Please be sure to check our website for details about this and other upcoming events. Lastly, we are trying to gather oral histories for a documentary we are putting together in the early fall. Do you or anyone you know have a story to tell about the Tybee Post Theater in its early days? If so, we’d love to hear from you! Don’t forget - our website - TybeePostTheater. org - is available 24/7! There you can buy or renew your membership, purchase an engraved brick or star, sign up to be a volunteer or join our mailing list to receive information about what’s going on with the theater. Thanks so much and we look forward to seeing you at our next Tybee Post Theater event.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22) Talk about getting lucky! Fortune will smile on you, especially when it comes to making close connections with delicious new friends. Leo (July 23 - August 22) You’re a magnet. A veritable magnet for the attention of interesting, attractive others -- and that’s not all. You can’t turn it off -- but then, why would you want to? Virgo (August 23 - September 22) Still feeling lucky? You should, because luck is still on your side. That includes meeting just the right person at just the right time to help you get whatever you need. Libra (September 23 - October 22) Consider this an instant replay of an inspirational moment, without the confusion. You’re feeling renewed, and you have a clear direction. Decide what to do, and who you want to have by your side. Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) Freedom, independence and doing your own thing. That’s the deal now -- the only one you’ll be willing to make. Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) A family member who’s been there for you is in need. They may be too proud to mention it, however, so you’ll have to offer in such a way as to not bruise their pride. You can do it. Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) The sudden intensity of the emotions you’re going through is far less frightening than you’d ever imagined. You’re enjoying it. Pull out all the stops and let change take over. Aquarius (January 21 - February 18) Intensity is the name of the game, in every department. There will be no such thing as a lighthearted conversation, a casual glance or a comment that really didn’t mean anything. Look for the deeper meaning in everything.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20) If you’re not done with all your projects -- work-wise, at least -- don’t stress about it. Aries (March 21 - April 19) Pretend there’s a genie on duty with a limitless amount of wishes for you. Imagine everything you really want as already being true. Positive thinking can’t hurt. Taurus (April 20 - May 20) The universe has arranged for a benefactor of sorts to come your way, fully equipped with helpful hints, solid advice and a veritable stack of folks who can guide you along your way. Gemini (May 21 - June 20) You’re not used to hearing from folks who aren’t either right next door or from your immediate family. Well, prepare yourself for something different, because it’s en route via a long-distance call, visit or email.
