Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction, but hardly ever as much fun…! Joe Inglesby and his Tybee Island Bomb Squad are about as much fun as you can have on Tybee, with your clothes on or should I say your bomb squad shirt and hat on. Sitting at the Tybee Island Bomb Squad headquarters, located at AJ’s Dockside restaurant along the Back River on Tybee, I asked Joe to tell me about his organization. “Well it all started”, he said, “from a dream that I had about ten or twelve years ago, there I was wrapped around this 7,600 lb. Mark 15 hydrogen bomb, plunging down towards Tybee. The bomb had been dropped from a U. S. Air Force B-47 Stratojet at 7,200 feet and then right before I was about to hit the water and undoubtedly buried deep into the murky bottom I woke up, to my great relief, realizing that it was only my pillow that I was wrapped around..!” He told his friend Hugh Mahany about the dream and Hugh told him that when he was a skinny kid of fifteen, back in 1958, there really had been a bomb jettisoned from a B-47 near Tybee and it disappeared, they think, into Wassaw Sound. Thus began Joe’s quest to find out everything he could about the Tybee Island Bomb. During the past decade, in addition to Joe’s exhaustive scholastic research, others have written books

and articles that have appeared in the Times of London, Savannah Morning News, LA Times, Time and too many other newspapers and magazines to list here. Joe’s enthusiasm about uncovering the mysteries surrounding the Tybee Bomb was, in a word, intoxicating and soon the Tybee Island Bomb Squad was born, along with a band of loyal supporters. His bomb squad hats and tee-shirts often prompt the question, “is the bomb squad for real…?” “Of course”, he answers, “why do you think I would be selling these trademarked hats, tee-shirts, sweatshirts, fleece jackets, windbreakers, koozies and bumper-stickers, if the bomb squad was not for real…!” “Well do you have regular meetings?” is usually the next question… “Yes indeed, here at AJ’s on Tybee we have weekly meetings and very often will meet up here between meetings and research the likelihood of ever again, getting bombed on Tybee…!” On leaving, Joe suggested for everyone to do a Google search for the “Tybee Island Bomb” and follow the links to Continued page 4 Tybee Breeze

discover all of the fascinating history of this mysterious Tybee story and he also invited anyone interested in the Tybee Island Bomb Squad to stop by AJ’s and purchase a Tybee Island Bomb Squad hat, tee-shirt or sweatshirt, and bumper-sticker and wear them proudly to show your support for this “stranger than fiction”, Tybee institution…! Remember: “If you’re lucky enough to live on Tybee, you’re lucky enough…!

We have outlined our key initiatives for 2012 and are enthusiastic about all that is in store for us this year! Our 2012 key initiatives were based on the marketing efforts we’ve seen the best results from in the last couple of years and ones that we see a lot of growth potential moving forward. This year we plan to expand our online marketing efforts through social media outlets, online banner advertisements and the addition of our new mobile app. for Tybee Island! We will also continue working on our Tybee video series, our Tybee PR campaign with Abshire Public Relations will expand to include efforts at more national coverage for Tybee Island, and one of the most significant is the addition of our Special Events segment of the Tybee Island Tourism Council. We’re ready for the challenge at hand and will be looking to the Tybee business community for support of our efforts to ensure that Tybee events continue the same positive, forward momentum that we’ve seen over the last several years. On the networking front, The Islands Networking Group held their monthly social at the Tybee Social Club on December 13th from 5:30-7:30 PM with a great turnout! This is a great networking event for islanders hosted each month by Scott West and Bunny Ware to include business folks from Whitemarsh, Wilmington, Talahi, and Tybee Islands! Sari McAfee helped organize the event and did a great job! The Savannah Chamber of Commerce will hold its first Small Business Council SMART Lunch Series on Tuesday, January 10th at 11:30 AM, Savannah Morning News Auditorium, 1375 Chatham Parkway. Our industry is the 5th largest employer in the state of Georgia with a total impact of $33.67 BILLION, supporting more than 391,000 JOBS, or 10.4% of all payroll employment in Georgia! It is more important now than ever to showcase Tybee Island and the surrounding area and stress the importance of the travel, tourism and hospitality industry in the state. Tourism & Hospitality Day will be hosted by the GA Department of Economic Development Tourism Division, GA Association of Convention and Visitors Bureau, GA Chamber of Commerce Tourism and Entertainment Committee, GA Hotel and Lodging Association and the GA Restaurant Association. Anybody got any extra sky aerodynamics, air speed, lift and whatever else, miles they aren’t using? etc., etc., etc. Judy O’Neill has written for the Breeze for the past eight years.

The Mysteries of Flight

Anyway! Let’s get to the point. If you’ve flown (by plane), you have had good experiences and bad experiences. Recently a friend of mine who shall remain nameless (Joe S.) had to make a cross country trip. And, of course, due to circumstances beyond his control, he ran into a few delays, as in everybody had to de-plane. (I like that term. Reminds me of Fantasy Island where we all already live and work.) At least, we’re pretty sure he wasn’t the reason the flight was cancelled or whatever.

She was named “Best Local Columnist” at the 2011, 2008 and 2006 Breezy Awards and “Best Local Real Estate Agent” at the 2005 Awards. Judy and her husband John have lived on Tybee since 1983 and own Tybee Island Realty. She can be reached for comment at tybeechick@aol.com.

When his lovely bride questioned why the flight was not to be, my friend who shall remain nameless gave her all the excuses he knew of. And although I respect the privacy of my friends, I had to share the excuses with you, my favorite readers. Here’s what I overheard...well, actually secretly read when I looked over her shoulder to see who she was getting text messages from: The flight was cancelled because... The drink cart had a wobbly wheel. The pilot forgot his flask. The turn signals malfunctioned. The windshield wipers fell off. They forgot to refill the wiper fluid. The horn broke. There were too many overweight people on board. The no-smoking lights wouldn’t come on. No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

1910 Elections Tybee’s first council meeting of 1910 was held on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. At that meeting a petition from R.C. Mcfadden (owner of the Seabreeze Motel) and others was presented “requesting that 16th street be opened from Main Street to the beach. After a general discussion, it was moved and carried that the petition be laid on the table, pending a more suitable time to arrange for Chain Gang labor in which to do the necessary work required.” My guess is that some winter storms had washed some sand up onto 16th (now Tybrisa, but needs to be changed back to 16th) Street. I’m also guessing that “opened” meant open to any wheeled vehicle desiring to drive on the beach including any automobile that might have existed on the island – my final guess is that there were none until the road arrived in 1923, though it would have been possible I suppose to bring one on the train or a floating vessel. “E.B. Islar presented a proposition, to donate to the Town of Tybee a strip of land lots 98 and 99 [between 16th and 17th Streets east of Main Street] for the purpose of making a street through same, provided the Town of Tybee would open and build and maintain said street. On motion it was moved and carried to decline Mr. Islar’s proposition.” Time will tell whether Mr. Islar will ultimately get his way with Council. As most of you know Izlar Avenue now exists one block south of 16th Street running from Butler to the Strand. We may also learn how the s in Islar changed to a z – may just be a misspelling in the minutes. “A resolution was passed authorizing the sale of 550 ft. from West to East of the beach in front of beach lots #95 and #96 to W.M. Bohan owner of beach lots #95 & 96 where the Central of Georgia Ry Pavillion now stands – for one hundred and ten dollars.” At the next Council meeting of April 4, 1910:

“Mayor Lovell appointed this day Pat Grogan, John Naylor, and F.W. Storer Managers of the election for a Mayor and six Councilmen to be held this day – they were duly sworn as such in accordance with the law. “The reports of the Managers of the Election held this day for a Mayor and six Councilmen, to serve for the ensuing two years, was read as follows: By virtue of the statute in such case, made and provided, an election was this day held in the Town of Tybee for a Mayor and six Councilmen, thereof, and we the managers of said election, do certify that upon counting the votes polled, the following is the result.” Lovell got all 11 votes to continue as mayor. Councilmen Kehoe, Dixon, Stillwell, Palmer, and Harty also got all 11 votes to continue for another two years. Ambrose Ehrlich got all 11 votes to replace Councilman Blun. You long-suffering and dedicated readers will recall my report four years ago on the first election on Tybee, April 7, 1890. There was a great deal of hoopla surrounding that first election. There may have even been a yard sign on two. But the notable thing was the fact that three Tybee citizens who were not either candidates or election managers – J.T. Ryan, Wm Campbell, and Peter Smith cast their ballots. For the next 20 years Tybee elections would be quite pro-forma with no indication of participation by the general citizenry. Back to the 1910 election - “We further certify and make known, that at the election for a Mayor and six Councilmen for the Town of Tybee to serve for the ensuing two years, held this 4th day of April 1910 - [the seven are named here] received a majority [as in all!] of the votes polled on said date and are therefore duly elected.” Oaths, appointments, ordinances, taxes (remained 1% of assessed value), license fees and similar business were then conducted. Licenses included hotels, boarding houses, billiard and pool tables, rifle ranges, games or ball ranges, show or amusement places, moving pictures shows, skating rinks, bowling alleys, photograph and picture galleries, lunch or ice cream stands, bakers, bread or cookie shops, grocery stores, provision or meat stores, water, ice, or lighting companies, bath houses, soft drink “other than non intoxicants made from cereal” stands, flying horse exhibitions, itinerant shows, restaurants and eating houses, telephone and telegraph companies, and my favorite and most costly license - the selling of non intoxicants made from cereal - for which the license fee was set at $100. The Mayor and Council would meet 11 days later to consider a petition to rebuild Hotel Tybee. Stay tuned.

I am happy to get back to providing monthly updates on the City’s activities. I have in the past not submitted articles during election season due to the possibility of the articles being perceived as political in nature. First off, I’d like to thank all of the candidates who ran for office this year. This year’s campaign, much like the 2009 elections, largely steered clear of ugly personal attacks and stayed focused on the issues. The next round of elections in 2013 will be for three council seats and four year terms. Secondly, many thanks are due to those council members who will not be serving on this council. Both Kathryn Williams and Shirley Sessions have represented our community as elected officials for many years and we all thank them for their hard work on behalf of our community. We look forward to honoring them for their service at the first Council meeting of the year. I have asked each of the incoming Council members to prepare a list of their top priorities for the next two years. We will work over the first few months of the year to come to a consensus on a few goals that we all want to see accomplished along with a timeline and some measure of accountability so that we can see these through to fruition. This will all be done in a way that allows for citizen participation in the process as we have always sought to ensure. Several projects that were budgeted in the current fiscal year still need to be completed. As you know, the City’s budget cycle runs from July 1 to June 30. These include the expansion of the fire bay to accommodate the additional equipment we have acquired for our increasingly busy little island, the paving of the bike path through Memorial Park, and several road paving projects. We hope to see that work is done on these projects prior to the beginning of the spring and the arrival of the tourists. Our Audit was recently finalized and can be viewed on the City’s website. We were very, very pleased with the results of the Audit as we continue to work through the downturn in the economy which has been ongoing since late 2008. We were able to add over $100,000 to our fund balance this year. We hope to continue to build this account while at the same time providing quality services and maintaining a low property tax rate. At the same time, funds from the county-wide Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax have been flowing into the City and will allow us No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

to continue to invest in public safety, infrastructure and recreation. Many of you may recall that when the Census results were issued last year, many with the City objected to the supposed decrease in Tybee’s population. We are at this time determining whether or not it is worth City tax dollars being expended to challenge the results. I will provide more information about this process soon. One of the reasons this is so critical is that the next Local Option Sales Tax (the 5th percent of the sales tax that we pay on most goods and services) distribution calculation will be made soon. This tax is a 10 year long county-wide tax which is set to expire soon. In the past, a City’s population determined what percentage of the tax proceeds it received from the County and we expect that this will once again be a primary driver of the calculation method. The difference between having 1.2% of the County population and 1.4% is very significant when we are dealing with potentially over $1 billion in county-wide collections, hence the importance of the 2010 Census results. Mayor’s Night In will be on Tuesday, January 10 from 6-8 PM at City Hall. Please contact Clerk of Council Jan Leviner at 786.4573 ext. 103 for an appointment. Thanks! Please don’t ever hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or suggestions. I can be reached on my cell at 844.8427 or via e-mail at buelterman@hotmail.com.

“Peaceful Journey” Happy “Your” Year Welcome to 2012! It’s a new year… a time of new beginnings. We have a new year to make right whatever was wrong the year before. I find myself contemplating change. When I need to think, to have contemplative time … to find myself again … I head to the beach. It’s my peaceful place. We were talking the other day about our peaceful places… you know… the places where we can go to remember why we’re here … what we’re doing … to slow down the craziness of it all … and get back in touch with ... who we really are. For some, the peaceful place is the mountains with lush greenery and babbling brooks. Others have back decks surrounded by a thousand shades of green. Or a church filled with pews, stained glass, and ritual. Bars filled with laughter, partially filled glasses of beer, sounds of pool sticks hitting balls, and friends greeting each other with slaps on the back. For me though, it’s the beach….walking in the sand (barefoot is best so I can feel it beneath my feet), the sun raining down beams to create sparkling diamonds on the waves, seagulls flying in formation as they retreat from my intrusion on their beach-sitting, the wind blowing my hair and caressing me with her gentle arms as she sings wordless hymns in my ears. Life gets in the way though. I cannot spend all my time on the beach… so I find other peaceful places too. My friend’s kitchen where we share innermost thoughts and secrets, hopes for the future, a love of music, good food, laughter, wagers on future possibilities, smiles, and hugs. Or my favorite Tybee Island bar that turns into a place of worship each Sunday morning, filled with words of encouragement, smiles, hugs, music, and prayer. Those are my peaceful places. Where are yours? Find them. Revel in their healing. Immerse yourself in your peaceful place and enjoy being…. you … the special thing that God created for this moment in time. This year is your year. So Happy “Your” Year … a time for new beginnings! A time for new journeys! A time for peace and peaceful journeys! I’m going to enjoy mine. Enjoy yours.

The Move By Alaina Loughridge

I have heard that the three biggest stressors of your life are: Death, taxes and moving. Well, I could add a few more to that, but let’s take a looky loo at moving. After hearing about a couple of friends moving recently and acquiring roommates, it got me to thinking about my own moving and roommate experiences. So one day I sat down and calculated my past scene. Holy crap! Not pretty. Over the past 20 years, I have moved 24 times and had 27 roommates. That averages out to a whole lotta hot mess right there - said hot mess not being me. Based on that extensive experience, I know what I’m talking about. Let’s start first with the move: It’s not as easy as it sounds and if you don’t take it seriously, locating emergency items can be a mission. Let’s start with what not to pack first: This is if you start at least two weeks in advance: 1. Do not pack your hard liquor, wine or beer. You will need it. 2. Do not pack your tax files if buying your new house – your binder will lose your documents faster than Shaq at a free throw contest. 3. Do not pack your corkscrew. Refer to item one. If you’re not a wine drinker, you can always use it to kill your significant other after they pack your favorite shoes. 4. Do not let your significant other anywhere near your closet. You will be going to work naked for two weeks. The alternative being wearing your “skinny” skirt with the half wooly sweater that makes your hair static out to electrocution stage five and then trying to mix and match with your fat pants and a tank top. 5. Do not pack your hand guns, war clubs, swords or machetes until the bitter end. Refer to item 3: available kill weaponry. 6. If you have friends of your significant other’s coming over, pre-pack your lingerie. There is nothing quite like the experience of hearing the giggles and backslapping coming from the closet. In that same vein, do pre-pack the stuff you want no one to see, i.e. sex chair, toys, etc. 7. Do not forget Item 1. 8. Do not pack your address book. For some reason sudden nostalgia can be overwhelming, making you want to call everyone you know. What the hell. Good time as any and you will have something to talk about. Additionally, it will be your good deed and their responsibility to call next time. One more thing to mark off your list. No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

9. As far as the list thing goes, it is a good thing. Unless you decide to make numbered boxes that correspond with your numbered list and of the items contained therein. It may sound like a good idea at the time, but it is not. Too complicated. Label your boxes with the main gist. No need for a novel, but get the guts of it. Arrows help too because if your movers open their beer too early, they will have something to focus on as they throw your fine china into the back of the U-Haul like it’s a box of pillows. 10. I shouldn’t have to mention it, but do not pack your Xanax and other important prescriptions … like Valium. That’s over preparation and you will kick yourself in the ass for it later. As for the roommates, well there is no top 10 for that. I have had both good and bad from Oregon to Slovakia. Some of the good looked like serial killers and some of the bad looked like Harvard grads. Just know no matter where you go and who you live with, there you are. All you can do is use common sense, hope for the best, expect the worst and keep your stuff buried in the backyard. That is the top ten and I do speak from experience. Although after reviewing my roommates and addresses I am all about Rule 10. That and the next time I move, it is definitely going to take more than a writ from the Sheriff’s Department. I reiterate: It’s not me! It’s them!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TYBEE!

n-Stroll winners! Year-round it is important to and appreciated when you shop locally. There are many Tybee businesses that provide services and goods to the community. We are extremely fortunate. Remember, the Locals Appreciation Card program continues to be strong. If you have not yet obtained your card, feel free to stop in the Better Hometown office located in City Hall’s Community Development Department. Please remember to bring your driver’s license showing your 31328 address. Many activities are coming up this year. Right around the corner is the Critz Tybee Run Fest February 3 – 4. This is the first year runners have the opportunity to run for two days! Multiple races / routes are planned and if all are completed, a full marathon is accomplished. We are looking forward to having everyone here! Also, please note that the spring and fall Third Thursdays on Tybee series planning is underway. Check out the Better Hometown webpage for submission information if you or someone you know is interested in being considered to perform. On another topic, efforts to Keep Tybee Tidy continue. Did you know that all marine debris comes from one source? The source is people. Many of you do your part to dispose of trash / recycling properly, but we need to get others to do the same! The bulk of marine debris comes from land and blows into the waterways which directly affect our ocean. Some things you can do to prevent marine debris are: reduce- reuse- recycle, pick up litter if you see it, dispose of all trash properly and get involved when cleanups are happening in the area. Let’s all work together and encourage others to Keep Tybee Tidy! Feel free to contact members of the Better Hometown Board of Directors or me with suggestions, concerns, or to help with committee goals. Here’s to you and the nostalgia of Tybee.

The Holidays flew by and hopefully you, as I, have wonderful memories of the Holiday celebrations. This year even more decorations of the season were seen throughout the island as celebratations were had with family and friends. Everyone that put on events and hosted parties with family and friends is one sign that Tybee is such a wonderful paradise to live, do business and play! The first weekend of December was filled with community spirit! Lights On for Tybee was purely delightful with the lighting of the tree, complementary refreshements along Tybrisa, Mr. Manucy directing The Christmas Choir, and the Gretchen Green School of Dance students preforming. Then the Christmas Parade continued the holiday traditions with so many festive participants leading Mr. & Mrs. Claus to the YMCA for their activities and photo time! Along with these events the first weekend of December, the organizations that participated at the Park of Giving are grateful for those that gave to help others. You make a difference! Many more activities contributed to the holiday spirit and hopefully your memories will continue to bring a smile to your face. A huge THANK YOU goes out to everyone that helped make Tybee for the Holidays a celebration for all. The month was wonderful and we are looking forward to next year’s celebrations! Thank you also for shopping locally for your holiday gifts. Plus, congratulations to all of the Holiday Shop- 16 Tybee Breeze

Tybee Marine Rescue Mission Reports By Joey Solomon Public Information Officer

There were 3 rescue missions in November & December. One was “Non-Called” in which our Skipper was off and handled it him self. AND these two: Chuck was out of our “standard report forms” and submitted this at the last meeting. I saw no need in changing a thing. Thanks for the afternoon off… I spent it in the river!

God bless a man with a flashlight! Tuesday, Nov 22, 7:46 PM: We got a call that three men were stranded, and out of fuel somewhere (Don’t you love it?) around Lazaretto Creek. We met up at Chimney Creek and set out with four boats. There was no moon and broken overcast, so it was plenty dark. The Skipper thought he knew where the lost ones might be, so we headed to Bull River. The skipper and Armon headed for Shad River for a look. The tide was going out. Man it was dark! Captain Jack and I headed

toward Wassaw Sound on a hunch. The Skipper thought he saw a strobe flash, but nobody else did. Captain Jack and I proceeded up Pa Cooper Creek, as it winds around toward the Shad, and were in the area where the skipper saw the strobe. The tide was about 2/3 out. I don’t remember Pa Cooper being that long. There they are! About 50 yards before rounding a curve, we saw the strobe through the marsh. It was a good strobe, but it was lower than the marsh. It took two hours to find them, and they weren’t anywhere near Lazaretto. A quick radio call brought the skipper who had the foresight to bring 5 gallons of gas, and in about fifteen minutes we had a five boat flotilla under way to Lazaretto boat ramp. I’ll save the story about me running aground in Lazaretto for another time. Thanks to our skipper for the assist. Lesson 1: A light isn’t much use unless you can raise it above the marsh. That strobe was invisible below the marsh. If you want to be seen, put your light on a pole. Lesson 2: No matter how many times you try to train it, that Evinrude isn’t going to learn to run without gas. Lesson 3: Lazaretto’s channel is narrow and shallow. Saturday morning, Dec 10, 4:07 AM. Who in the world is calling my cell phone? I stumbled out of bed, and looked. It was the skipper, and he doesn’t usually call to chat at 04:07. I called him back. The worthless bum said he was at the hunting camp in Screven County, a likely story since it was about 50 degrees and raining. He spun a sad tale about two guys stranded on a tiny island with two cedar trees near Wassaw Sound, and their boat had floated away. At least it was a full moon, and the heavy overcast was pretty bright and we could see enough to avoid hitting the lost boat. The skipper gave me their cell number. With two boats, we set out for Bull River. Bobby told me he had brushed his teeth, so we designated him the official kisser in case any kissing was appropriate. Near Pine Log we stopped and called the number. A happy man answered the phone, and within about thirty seconds he could see my Q-beam, and I could see his flashlight. God love a man with a flashlight! That flashlight was worth several hours of painful searching. They were on a 20 yard long oyster shell pile with two cedar trees. We picked up the guys, found their boat, and again made that run to Lazaretto creek. Lesson 1: A Flashlight can be a miracle tool. It sure made a difference that night. Lesson 2: There’s a reason those things on a rope are called anchors. Do yourself a favor. Make sure you have a flashlight, an anchor with a long rope, and a charged cell phone battery in addition to the required safety equipment.

Experience Luxury, Oceanfront Style The wedding chapel has enjoyed a busy first year. 32 fabulous weddings and receptions, several parties and a wonderful Grand Opening. The Chapel was just awarded by The Knot “Best of Weddings for 2012”. This is a wonderful accomplishment and should help Tybee Island become an even greater wedding destination. Mr. Ray Anaya, our Director of Events earned this award. We are so proud for Ray and his team. We have become members of the Better Business Bureau, as well. The Teddy Bear Tea Party was a huge success. Our friend, Suzanne Painter, hosted this event on behalf of the Georgia World Organization of Porcelain Art School. Here are some great photos of the children painting their “teddy bear” plates for Christmas. The most amazing thing was how beautiful all the children (and adults) were dressed. I have never seen such lovely manners during any event. The face painting was a huge success, as well! The food was great and the children had a really good time.

The year is winding down and it has been enjoyable driving around Tybee at night seeing our beautiful Christmas lights. Tybee is cheerfully welcoming to everyone this time of year. It has been a good year

for Tybee. The island enjoyed a busy spring and summer season. We enjoyed the lighting of the Christmas tree on Strand, carolers, the music, seeing Santa and Mrs. Claus during this festive night. The young dancers were especially joyful to watch. They were talented and so excited to show their beautiful routines. Many friends on Tybee are finding ways to enjoy the season. Lannie and I have attended a few very nice Christmas parties. We thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas boat parade and party at The Crab Shack. Our bookings for Oceanfront Cottage Rentals, LLC are good for New Year’s. The famous fireworks and related festivities are a huge draw for our small island. The Polar Bear Plunge on New Year’s Day is going to be so much fun. Remember to wear your We are looking forward to bathing cap so that Tybee can win the Guinness Book

more weddings and other events in 2012 and for years to come. Please keep us in mind for parties, anniversaries, wedding and receptions. If you have a moment take a look at our new web site. We are going to be able to add vendors to the site without having to contact a designer. We are excited about the new site and our being able to post events daily by our staff. www.tybeewedding.com Everyone is welcome to tour the chapel. You may call our office for an appointment. Monday January 16th is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It is a National Holiday since 1983 when President Ronald Reagan signed the bill creating the federal holiday. It has become marked by a week of service. Anyone interested in attending the Savannah parade can carpool from All Saints Episcopal Church, Tybee to St. Matthew Episcopal on MLK in Savannah. This year Tybee has a place of honor in the parade. All Saint’s Episcopal will have the first float in the parade. That is a big deal... the parade has over 75 entries. Winter is coming and where have all the loggerhead sea turtles gone? Being reptiles and cold blooded, they must head to warmer climates for the duration of the winter months. Loggerheads, as well as other sea turtle species, are solitary animals and can migrate for hundreds of miles. Most of the loggerheads that visited Georgia waters during the nesting season will migrate south towards Florida and Caribbean waters. The Atlantic loggerhead population may spend the winter in the Atlantic, Pacific or Indian Oceans. Leatherbacks, the largest sea turtle, can regulate their own body temperature which allows them to remain active in colder waters. After a long season of courting, mating and nesting female sea turtles need to replenish themselves. Male loggerheads have been on the move since mid spring when mating was complete. Hibernation is not uncommon in the Atlantic loggerhead population. To hibernate, a sea turtle will bury itself in the silt, sand or mud at the bottom of the sea. Cooler water temperatures will affect the metabolism rate of the loggerhead. By reducing their metabolism, sea turtles can stay submerged for forty minutes up to five hours if they are not active.* During the colder months loggerheads will continue to forge on their favorite foods, crabs, horseshoe crabs and jellyfish. A danger that all sea turtles face in the winter months is cold stunning. This occurs when the water temperature drops quickly to 50 degrees Fahrenheit or below, sea turtles that are still in the area will most likely become cold stunned making them lethargic and floaters. Being unable to dive can put the turtle at risk for catching pneumonia. Many loggerheads and green sea turtles were “cold stunned” in 2009, when Florida had record low temperatures during January. More than 5,000 sea turtles were affected by this event. Many were able to be rescued, rehabilitated and released back into the oceans, although further south to warmer waters. Cold stunned turtles are treated by warming up the body temperature and then placing the turtle in to a warm salt bath. Each turtle was examined and treated for injuries and illness before being released back into the wild. You can follow the migratory patterns, of several Georgia sea turtles, this winter at www.seaturtle.org. For more information on our Georgia turtles please visit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center.

WHAT’S NEW AT THE Burton 4-H Center By David Weber It’s been a busy fall at the Burton 4-H Center. We have set an attendance record for our school environmental education program. Over 3,000 public, private, and homeschooled students attended from all over Georgia and the surrounding states. During their three day stay we teach classes on the local ecology including the beach, salt marshes and maritime forests. You may see our yellow school buses and white mini-buses that read “UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA” taking kids to our beautiful classrooms. No, there are not university students in those buses; those are school-aged kids learning with the Burton 4-H Center. We also lead other fun outdoor classes like orienteering and an after-dark night walk on the beach. Other unforgettable marine related classes include squid and shark dissection and seining in the ocean. Sound fun? Call us up. Our minimum group size is 10 people. During the overnight trips, sometimes parents leave the kids with us and their teachers and go out to eat on Tybee to look for some fresh local seafood. The Crab Shack, AJ’s and Sting Rays were popular choices for over 70 parents that were able to get away this fall. We also hear many chaperones say they’ve never been to Tybee before but are really impressed by its charm. We hope they will return again with their family. December is a slower month for us so we were catching up on a little remodeling. Our property was once part of the U.S. Army’s Fort Screven, and some of our buildings date back to that time. We took over in 1947. With over 8,000 people visiting our education center every year, buildings experience wear and tear. We have eight dormitories for groups to stay in. We are replacing the floors in two of these and updating the bathrooms. We have also added attic insulation to six of the dorms to help reduce energy costs. We are so happy to be a part of the Tybee Island Community. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

Rats and Mice

Now that we are into the colder months there will be an influx of rodent activity looking for harborage and a place to nest for warmer domiciles including our homes and outside structures. This can include all outside creatures by the coastal parameters that we live by as well as inland areas that are common breeding places for these rodents. In our general area the most common of these rodents are roof rats, Norway rats, deer and common house mice. They are known to squeeze through an opening as small as a ½ inch gap. Anything smaller can be chewed or gnawed upon forging an entrance to any structure. Marks left by house mice are less noticeable than rats. Any food products including pet foods should not be stored in accessible areas. Rats and mice are nocturnal and can be more active in the fall and winter when they look for a place of harborage. They are known to feed at dusk and dawn. It is best to inspect your home and outer buildings for access to entry points that they may enter into. This includes eves, dormers, any damaged wood areas and dryer vents.

Control

A successful program of rodent control begins with a through inspection of the property, which includes identifying signs of any infestation occurring with bite marks, tracks, rubs marks, droppings and damaged goods. Once the inspection is complete proper measures are necessary in order for control. Rats and mice can be caught with snap traps that can be placed near walls and vertical runs where they travel. They are known to be wary of any new elements in their environment, thus any new objects should be left dormant for a time before and after a bait system is introduced. There are several anticoagulant rodenticides that are effective for control including pellets, packets, and bait blocks. Bait stations that are tamper resistant and inaccessible are helpful also. Any and all water sources available to them should be eliminated as well. Rodents mainly rats and mice are responsible for at least 500 million to one billion dollars of damage incurred on properties per year in the United States. These figures are attributed to many fires that are caused from gnawing of rodents on electrical lines and can destroy millions of dollars of food products. They can also carry many diseases that can have an impact on humans as well as other animals. Until next time, Let’s work the bugs out! Johnny “the bugman” Herald, Cox Pest Control

Once again another “New Year” is here and we at American Legion Post 154 hopes that it’s a good year for everyone. There will once again be a “Super Bowl” party at the Post on Super Bowl Sunday. It was loads of fun last year and the food was great. Our big screen television is alive and well, so come and be with us for the game. Our Veterans Circle of Freedom War Memorial is slowly but surely being completed. We still have a ways to go but with the help of your donations and our volunteer workers it will be completed. The monument is in place and Old Glory is flying along with flags from all branches of our armed forces and merchant marines. Bricks have been laid but there is still plenty of room for more. An engraved brick placed at the Monument is a great way to thank a family member or friend who served in our armed forces. Order forms are at the Post. A reminder, our legion hall is available for

rent. If you would like to have a birthday party, wedding reception or family event contact Wanda Kindrick. She can be contacted thru the post at 786-5356. Horseshoes on Saturday nights are on hold for now but we plan to start back in early March. Bingo is on Fridays at 8:00pm. Cards go on sale at 7:15pm and the public is welcome. The “Big Game” is for $500.00. We continue to look for new members. If you’re interested in the Legion, Ladies Auxiliary or Sons of the Legion call the Post (786-5356) for information. The Legion and Auxiliary meet on the second Monday of the month, with social hour (and food) starting at 6:00pm and the meeting at 7:00pm. The Sons of the Legion meet on the third Monday at 7:00pm. As always, Linda or Patti will have the canteen open at 5:00pm every day except Sunday. We close on Sunday’s unless there is a special event.

Take My Hand By Alaina Loughridge The chili cook off held on December 9th at the Wind Rose to benefit a local woman with Crohn’s Disease was a phenomenal success! I have never lived in a community that is so supportive and proactive. Tybinean’s are all of that and so much more. Not to mention we can party like no one on earth and have livers of stainless steel! 110% of the registered chili cookers showed up, which is downright unheard of! With 14 chili’s to taste, the judges were placed in a tight spot, but performed admirably with the help of Kiah Polk, the chili man with the master taster plan. Top bragging rights for Chili God of the Universe goes to Joel Addis. Beegee came in second, and Mark Klein came in third. The winner of a night at the Sea & Breeze was local dude Brandon Coleman, who was a very happy guy as he toted his champagne basket out the door claiming he had never won anything in his life. Congratulations to everyone! There are so many people that helped with this benefit that it would take pages to list everyone, but Take My Hand would especially like to thank John Yarbrough and Andrew Poulis at Spanky’s, Leonard at Sea & Breeze, Eric Thomas at Huc-aPoos, Mark and Nell Klein at Wind Rose, Peggy Stone at Doc’s, and Sherri at Good Vibrations. Special thanks to Sam Adams, Monty Parks and Gordy for playing hours of excellent acoustical jams. Having had such a successful pajama pub crawl last year (from what we can recall), Roguewave Productions in partnership with Take My Hand presents the Second Annual Pajama Pub Crawl to be held on Friday, January 13, 2012. With a year to ponder and improve a good time, this year’s event is going to be monumental! So, slap on your pj’s and cruise the boulevard to Spanky’s for the kickoff at 6:00 P.M. They will be hosting a kick ass happy hour to get your game face on and a group photo will be taken before your game face starts to slip to the left. After Spanky’s the crawl will head to Tybee Time, Wind Rose, Rock House, Nikkie’s, and the final stop will be held at the Sand Bar. Each bar will offer a different game or event. Games to include speed drinking, pass the orange, belching, best pajamas, best bar fly and last man standing. Good times right there! Medals and trophies will be awarded to all winners. One of the best things about wearing your pajamas for a night of debauchery, mayhem and drinking is that you don’t have to do much when you get to where you are going to bed. Everything is already done for you. To assist you with that, Sea & Breeze is offering discounted rooms to anyone wearing their pajamas. You just gotta love this island! In partnering with Take My Hand, Roguewave Productions will be holding a 50/50 raffle (which is always fun because for $1 you can win who knows how much), as well as a raffle for a basket of cheer. Yippee to that!! Naturally, the proceeds go to an excellent cause. I know you aren’t doing anything on Friday, January 13th so put on your jammies and come enjoy the festivities. Let’s keep it at least PG 17, but if you are brave enough to face the cold wearing something skimpy, well the next shots on the guy sitting next to you. Cheers and I hope to see y’all there. Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) Don’t be shy. It’s never been something you were any good at anyway. Just say it, whatever it is. Even your family will applaud you for having the guts to get this out in the open. Aquarius (January 21 - February 18) If something surprising has recently come out into the open, don’t blame yourself. Every now and then, it’s time for secrets to be revealed. It’s necessary to clear the air. Pisces (February 19 - March 20) It’s time to take a break from the world. You’re famous for being the very soul of sociability, but at the moment, you’re intent on keeping that date with the couch. Enjoy it. Aries (March 21 - April 19) After days of announcing your presence to the world, you’re suddenly in the mood to curl up, snuggle up and disappear. Hibernation is necessary every now and then. It’s your turn. Taurus (April 20 - May 20) This is one of those days that often goes down in the books as ‘interesting’ for a variety of reasons. Take the best of it, and let the rest go. Gemini (May 21 - June 20) Finding a happy medium between what you want and pleasing the ones you love won’t be easy, but stand your ground (who’s better at that than you?), you can pull it off. Cancer (June 21 - July 22) This is one for the record books. Startling news this morning could well lead to a major decision tonight. Fasten your seat belt. This just might be a rather bumpy ride. Leo (July 23 - August 22) About that advice? It’s time to ask for it. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you can go it alone now. You need the input of an objective third party -- someone who’ll be willing to tell you the whole truth. Virgo (August 23 - September 22) Whoever is in charge doesn’t seem to be taking their job seriously, at least not in your book. That might mean it’s time for you to take over. Libra (September 23 - October 22) Surprising news could leave you feeling like you’ve been forced into making a very serious decision. You’ve got quite a day on the menu. Better take your vitamins. Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) Talk about interesting. You’re due for a surprising call, email or personal visit. Thinking about what to do next. Don’t worry. You’ll come up with the right answers. Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) You’re focused on personal relationships more than anything else. Fortunately, they’re just as focused on you. So if you have to make a major joint decision, don’t worry about it turning out badly.
