Mindanao ‘breaks’ Guinness world record on tree planting

By MINDANEWS with PJ TREMEDAL, Misoc bureau chief KORONADAL City––Mindanao has unofficially broken a Guinness World Record for most trees planted simultaneously in multiple locations on Friday, but some participants ranted against the organizers for the unannounced grueling trek in the mountains that had some of them fainting due to fatigue.

As of 5 p.m. Friday, thousands of Mindanawons have planted 3,058,625 trees of various species in the six

regions of the island, according to the partial and unofficial results for the “TreeVolution: Greening MindaNOW.” The current world record for the most number of trees planted simultaneously at multiple locations was achieved in India on August 15, 2011.The world record of 1,945,535 trees planted was carried out by 340,200 participants across 408 locations.

Guinness will still have

to validate Mindanao’s tree planting feat.

TreeVolution organizers earlier targeted to mobilize 185,440 people who will plant 4,636,000 trees covering 9,200 hectares across Mindanao.

As of posting time on Saturday, the target was still short by 1,577,375 trees as counting was still in progress.

Legal manual for Muslim Filipinos out KORONADAL City––The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) has urged its constituents to avail a copy of a legal handbook primarily designed to help Muslim Filipinos increase their human rights knowledge.

NCMF Secretary Yasmin Busran Lao said the legal handbook is now available, after four years in the making, with the assistance of the European Union and other government agencies.

AGUM City - A group of medical specialists from Metro Manila is pushing to avert maternal deaths and reduce birth complications through early diagnosis by offering free obstetrical scans to pregnant women who are in their fifth to sixth month of gestation using a portable ultrasound machine integrated with a smartphone.

Approx i m at e l y 2 1 0 Tagumenyo pregnant women from the 23 barangays of the city availed of the free ultrasound through the Project iBuntis (Imaging Buntis) last September 2223, 2014, a project operated by the University of the Philippines Manila-College of Medicine and is funded by Grand Challenges Canada.

Tagum, along with the City of Parañaque in Metro Manila, were chosen as pilot cities for the said program in the Philippines.

Team leader Dr. Godofreda Dalmacion of UP Manila said they wanted to create awareness not only among pregnant women but also among government leaders on the importance of ultrasound testing as a key step in reducing birth complications and maternal deaths.

“They (government) have to put their money where their mouth is. If they want to decrease maternal mortality, they should sup-

Data released by the National Economic and Development Authority through its Fifth Progress Report on the Millennium Development Goals showed that while the Philippines is on track in achieving the goal of reducing child mortality, the country is still far from achieving the goal of reducing maternal mortality.

die from childbirth have not decreased and instead increased to higher levels than when the MDGs started in 1990. In 1990, the maternal mortality ratio was 209 per 100,000 live births. But in 2011, the figure had increased to 221, higher than the initial figure in 1990.

“This project is not only a search for new intervention but also makes available

a life saving test to 250 or more pregnant women who normally cannot afford the test,” she said.

GE Electronics provided the portable ultrasound machines for the project, which costs at around 450,000 pesos.

Women’s health advocate Margie Moran-Floirendo who was present during the launching is calling on the government to invest in this machine to help increase awareness in reproductive health care.

Hubbies in the upland village sell flowers for better lives

AYUGAN City - Husbands of the hinterland village of Pinagalahan of this city have literally surrendered their “masculinity” for the sake of growing and selling flowers.

But don’t get these family breadwinners wrong.

The men in this upland village just wanted to earn better in producing different kinds of flowers when they realized it yields well in their farm lands which is conducive to such products because of the cold weather the whole year round.

Since 1996, flower farming has been a major source of livelihood in the community of about 1,200 residents after the husbands realized that their wives earned more with flowers than their vegetables when they transport their produce along bad roads towards the market place at the town center.

Enrico Damulo, a father of six children, said he was a newly-married man, then when he decided to shift to raise high value flowers on several garden plots of his farm land after he found out there is a good market and command a better price.

“I used to grow bitter gourd and eggplants but only 25 percent of the goods I delivered to the public market were only left in good condition while my wife’s flowers were mostly intact even with the rugged roads before,” Damulo, a village councilman said.

The budding floral industry has bloomed and spread to other neighboring mountainous villages of Sta. Teresita, Magkiangkang and Mt. Carmel where residents also grow cutflowers and Anthoriums.

Residents of these upland villages were more encouraged to expand their floral farm lands after an allweather 11 kilometer farmto-market road was finished early this year through the Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan or PAMANA program of the Office the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process.

The P25 million road network project starts at the national highway village of Osmena and connects towards the upland villages of Sta. Teresita, Pinagalaan, Villa Undayon, New Salem, Mt. Carmel, New Lanao, Grace State and Mt. Olive, a large mountainous area where it was once considered conflict-affected by the atrocities between government soldiers and New Peoples Army rebels.

said their villages had virtually turned into “no man’s land” especially at the height of the atrocities in the 1980s that most residents felt the government had abandoned them.

Damulo who grows yellow chr ysanthemums or more known as golden yellow mums already earns P20,000 per quarterly harvest on his three-plot garden apart from the Anthoriums on his main farm land.

He said he could earn more if they will be tapped to supply and make flower arrangements for weddings , funerals and other special occasions. He charges P1,500 per flower bundle for funerals and P5,000 for flower arrangements at church weddings.

“We were a bit awkward to go into this kind of trade since this suit only for feminine tasks, but we find a way to make this a family livelihood among couples in the village,” he said.

Reynaldo Torres, City Agriculture Office Technician, said they has conducted several trainings on floral arrangements to add more value to the flourishing livelihood of home-based flower farmers in the neighboring hinterland villages.

He said there were more men attending the training, especially the high value cut flower industry that a male was chosen as chairman of Bayugan City Cut Flowers Association.

A housewife, Divina Hernan with eight children who chairs the Pinagalaan Cut Flowers Association, however, also earns well at P3, 500 per delivery of flowers at flower shops in the city.

She supplies f lowers thrice a week that she was able to send two children to college, one of which is a

daughter studying horticulture at Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology hoping she could develop more their thriving small-scale family business.

Like Hernan, the women in neighboring Magkiangkang village are leading a progressive cooperative of Cacao farmers which now produces “tableya”, cacao beans that are dried, roasted and grinded to form into chocolate tablets to make hot chocolates, chocolate candies and chocolate cakes.

The Magkiangkang Multi-Purpose which has been producing high quality tableya since 2000 is a recipient of PAMANA fund helping some 30 farmers grow high variety cacao to support the growing demand of tableya in big shopping malls in the city, Butuan and Davao.

Juliet Pielago, marketing officer of the cooperative, said there is a need for additional cacao beans after their processing plants has been receiving more purchase orders from Warehouse Club in their city, Robinson’s Mall and Gaisano Mall in Butuan City and Gaisano Mall in Davao City.

She said they now regularly deliver 1,000 packets of tableya a month each to Robinson’s and Gaisano malls in Butuan and Davao.

“Our customers especially in classy bakeshops prefer tableya than cocoa in making top selling chocolate cakes,” said Charlita Maratas, chair of the cooperative,. She said they are seeking more financial assistance from PAMANA to buy bigger grinding machines to cope up with the increasing market demand.

The PAMANA funded flower and cacao growing development projects were also anchored by the flag-

ship program of Gov. Adolph Edward Plaza called “Upland Sustainable Agriforestry Development (USAD).”

Plaza said with PAMANA and USAD going hand in hand, the farmers in these areas are no longer beneficiar-

ies of government programs, but are now enrollees.

“Before, at the start of the PAMANA program, they are beneficiaries because they are bound to receive. Now that they are the owners of their livelihood with easy access

to market and trade, they are called enrollees because many want to enroll and join the band to success,” Plaza said.

The governor aims to reduce the number of poorest of the poor residents in the province to 13,000 before his second term ends in 2016 with the intensified implementation of USAD. Oliver Banancilan, PAMANA Area Manager for ComVal, Caraga region and Central Mindanao, said even as the peace negotiations with the National Democratic Front has been stalled, the government did not stop to explore opportunities in the conflict-affected areas.

He said the PAMANA projects in these upland areas is a serious government effort in promoting human security to let people living with atrocities before lead a peaceful and progressive way of living.

“We just wanted the communities know that the government is present and working for them to focus their attention to the people in these areas,” he said.

Banning premature campaigns?

A veteran lawmaker has moved to “reinstate” the prohibition against premature campaigning and revive election offenses committed prior to the start of the campaign period.

HB 4105 prohibits “electoral campaign or partisan political activities except during the campaign period and providing a penalty therefor.”

But under the present state of our laws, there is no longer any prohibition against premature campaigning. Premature campaigning has already

been decriminalized in the 2009 case of Penera v. Comelec, et al, (G. R. No. 181613, Nov. 25, 2009, En Banc).

Based on the Penera case, the rule now is that two (2) facts must concur in order for a person or aspiring candidate to be liable to an election offense: first, he must have filed his certificate of candidacy; and second, the campaign period has commenced.

This means that a candidate in our (automated) elections could campaign much earlier than the start

of the campaign period and not incur any criminal liability for premature campaigning under our election laws.

To say that the legal conundrum arising from such a jurisprudential rule not only decriminalizes premature campaigning, but any and all election offenses committed prior to the campaign period as well is debatable..

Whether the majority of the Court realizes this grave implication from its ruling, it merely washes its hands by conveniently

stating that “the forum for examining the wisdom of the law, and enacting remedial measures, is not this Court but the Legislature..

Whether the fault lies in the flawed phraseology of the law on automated elections (as the majority seems to imply), or the infirm legal reasoning or interpretation of the ponencia (as the minority suggested), one thing clearly stands out – “there is an urgent need for remedial legislation in this particular area of our election law,” thus Congress should do something about it.

Statistical symposium to highlight celebration of stats month in NM

CAGAYAN de Oro City– –A statistical symposium will highlight the opening of the 25th National Statistics Month celebration in Northern Mindanao at Limketkai Activity Center on October 1.

Tabak tenders sendoff party for outgoing chief

ABANGAN, Zamboanga del Sur – The 1st Infantry (Tabak) Division on September 24 in the evening tendered a farewell party for Colonel Agapito Carmelo Nagrampa Jr., the outgoing chief of staff of the Philippine Army’s premiere division.

The party, which was held at the Tennis Court,

1st Infantr y Division, Camp Major Cesar Sanan, Pulacan was attended by the officers and men of the division led by Tabak commander BGen. Gerardo Barrientos Jr. including civilian employees and guests.

The 55 year-old military official served the 1st Infantry Division as chief of staff from May 23, 2013 – Aug. 30, 2014.

He was a former commanding officer of 55th Infantry Battalion in Oroquieta City, commanding officer of Division Training Unit, and executive officer of 104th Infantry Brigade based in Sulu province.

After serving a year at the 1st Infantry Division, Nagrampa would be transferred to the Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) in Davao

City. He will be replaced by Col. Manuel Felino Ramos.

BGen. Barrientos in his message said “we are here not necessarily to celebrate the departure of Col. Nagrampa but to pay tribute to the things he has done to the 1st Infantry Division and, at the same time, to welcome the new set of officers who are assigned in the division.”

“Coincidentally, in my 83rd day of service in the division, I happened to meet my classmates here,” Barrientos announced.

You did not tell us we still have to walk for two more hours to reach the main site,” he said in Filipino.

“The trek was really difficult. What you did was cruel. Many women fainted because of the punishing walk,” Hipolito added.

He also noted that there were no available bottled waters when they reached the planting site at around 8 a.m.

Hipolito said the bottled waters were distributed two hours later.

The TreeVolution was co-organised by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Agriculture and the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

Secretary Luwalhalti Antonino, MinDA chairperson, said the massive tree planting activity was part of the re-greening initiatives for Mindanao.

“While we are aiming to create a new Guinness World Record with Treevolution, what is more critical is for us to reforest Mindanao,” she said on Facebook.

“Let’s bring back what we took away from Mother Nature,” Antonino added.

Those who participated include soldiers, policemen, government employees, the religious and business sectors, students, non-govern-

ment organizations and even members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

The simultaneous tree planting lasted for an hour-from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. A pre-registration was required for the participants who must be 17 years old and above.

In Misamis Occidental, Governor Herminia M. Ramiro and Lt. Col. Gerry Besana of the 55th Infantry Brigade spearheaded the tree-planting inside the 15-hectare military reservation during the simultaneous holding of the 2014 Treevolution on September 26.

Aside from the 15 hectares, the towns of Plaridel and Sapang Dalaga committed five hectares for the activity.

For the record, 7,500 trees of various variety was planted within an hour in the military reservation of 15 hectares, while the municipality of Plaridel led by himself, Mayor Diego Ty explore its beaches and fish sanctuaries and planted 5,000 propagules of Mangrove trees by 200 planters, and the municipality of Sapang Dalaga contributed also for the province participation with 2,500 trees with its 5 hectares of non-bearing and bearing fruit trees with 125 planters from various sector of the society.

For her part, Ramiro thanked the 943 planters who joined the 2014 Treevolution.

1,500 Moro massacre victims during Martial Law honored GENERAL Santos City––The national government has finally recognized around 1,500 Moro residents of a village in Palimbang town in Sultan Kudarat province who were killed in a massacre 40 years ago as martial law victims.

Commission on Human Rights (CHR) Chairperson Loretta Ann Rosales personally gave the recognition on Thursday to the victims’ families in line with the 40th year commemoration of the infamous September 24, 1974 Malisbong Massacre.

She personally met with some of the survivors and relatives of the victims in a visit at a mosque in Barangay Malisbong in Palimbang town where the massacre happened.

Rosales said the government is mainly giving proper recognition and upholding the rights of all the victims of the gruesome massacre.

“Bibigyan natin ng dangal and bawat isa sa kanila because there is this measure of justice na bagamat hindi total justice ay nagsisiguro ng tinuturing nating hustisya (We will give dignity to each one of them because there is this measure of justice that, although not total, ensures some kind of justice that we’ve been hoping),” she said.

The CHR chief was referring to the enlistment or inclusion of the survivors and the families of the massacre victims as among the claimants of the P10-billion fund that was set aside by the government for the monetary remuneration of human rights victims during the martial law regime of the late President Ferdinand Marcos.

Such move was provided for in Republic Act 10368, or the Human Rights Victims Reparation and Recognition Act of 2013, a law recognizing and providing reparation to victims of human rights violations during Martial Law. CHR personnel facilitated the filing of the claims with the Human Rights Victims’ Claims Board of the Malisbong Massacre victims.

HRVCB personnel came to the city earlier this week to receive and process claims for martial law remuneration of victims coming from this city and nearby provinces of South Cotabato and Sarangani.

Former Akbayan partylist representative Mario Aguja, who helped lobby for the recognition of the Malisbong Massacre victims, said their inclusion in the martial law remuneration is a significant step towards “healing” of the wounds created by the incident.

“For the first time in 40 years, they have finally filed their claims.

This is not only monetary but part of it is the recognition from the government that they were victims of state-led atrocities during the martial law period,” he said.

The Malisbong Massacre is considered as among the worst atrocities that happened in southern and central Mindanao during the martial law period.

Based on accounts by the Moro Women’s Center based in this city, the entire Moro-dominated coastal village of Malisbong in Palimbang was razed to the ground by government forces and their allies.

“Moro men were shot to death while women and children were arrested and brought to a nearby Marines and Navy boat anchored on the sea shore that was constantly shelling the community,” the group said.

It said women aged nine to 60 years-old were raped while being detained at the boat overnight.

“About 3,000 detained women and children were later released and ushered to a community along the seashore. Most of them lost their sanity due to grave torture during interrogations,” it said.

Based on the group’s estimates, around 1,500 male Moros aged 11 to 70-years old were massacred inside the Malisbong mosque while some 300 houses were destroyed and burned by government forces.

State-of-the-art provincial hospital in Kapatagan town nears completion

LIGAN City - The highly anticipated ultra-modern Kapatagan Provincial Hospital will soon be opened for business to serve the residents of Kapatagan, Lala, Salvador, Sapad and Nunungan in the Province of Lanao del Norte.

“This modern 100-bed hospital is another flagship project of the province led by Governor Khalid Dimaporo, as he continues to improve the healthcare services here in Lanao del Norte,” said Project Director Dennis Aguipo.

During the coordination meeting between the provincial government and representatives from Mañosa & Company, Inc., and RRMD Construction and Supply, it was learned that more than 50-percent of the project have already been completed with 90-percent of the structural requirements already accomplished.

Mañosa & Co., Inc. was commissioned by Governor Dimaporo to design a

modern hospital that will seamlessly unify the artistic designs of the Maranao-inspired Gov. Arsenio Quibranza Provincial Government Center and the Mindanao Civic Center sports complex.

The new hospital is composed of two buildings that houses the offices, food service, housekeeping, and the fundamental in-patient care.

Contemporary designs of hospitals now elevate the patient-based design concept to a whole new level, by building medical facilities that resemble a 3-star or 4-star hotel and mimic a resort-like experience through the use of creative designs, advance patient care and amenity offerings.

Oroquieta City, now Red Orchid Awardee OROQUIETA City - The city of Oroquieta, the “City of Good Life,” has recently received the Red Orchid Award (ROA) from the Department of Health (DOH) in recognition of the city’s tough campaign against smoking.

The ROA is given by DOH to local government units (LGU) that meet the criteria for implementing a 100 percent tobacco-free environment set by DOH under the World Health Organization’s (WHO) framework.

Mayor Jason Almonte, who received the award, stressed that the city’s antismoking campaign is part of his administration’s 8-point agenda and that the city continues to strive for the good life of its constituents through healthy lifestyle.

NGOs-DAR sign contracts for farmers in Bukidnon MALAYBALAY City - The DAR Provincial Office of Bukidnon headed by Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer (PARPO) II Julio C. Celestiano, Jr. signed an agreement with two non-government organizations (NGOs) to train agrarian reform beneficiaries organizations (ARBOs) in the municipalities of Cabanglasan and Baungon.

The signing was held on Sept. 10, 2014, between DAR and Institute for SocioEconomic and Development Initiative (ISEDI) which will handle the ARBOs in Cabanglasan and Foundation for Rural Enterprise and Ecology Development of Mindanao (FREEDOM) which will take charge of the ARBOs in Baungon.

The NGOs won the bid to provide business development services (BDS) such as development of business

enterprise, market management, financial management and organizational management and governance for the ARBOs in the two towns.

The undertaking is a component of the Agrarian Reform Connectivity and Economic Support Services (ARCCESS) Project, one of the support services delivery mechanisms of DAR for the CARP beneficiaries nationwide to contribute to the overall goal of rural poverty reduction particularly in agrarian reform areas.

Celestiano said the support services intervention will benefit 10 ARBOs in Cabanglasan and three ARBOs in Baungon. These ARBOs will serve as hubs or center of support services not only for their own needs but also for other ARBOs and non-ARBs in the area.

The purpose of outsourcing BDS is to provide the

ARBOs with management skills trainings to fast-track the establishment of self-

terpart of P85,000. Both projects are to be completed in 50 working days.

DAR Assistant Regional Director Eliasem Castillo said the projects were approved under the Grassroots Participatory Budgeting (GPB) process, a strategy

in pursuing the Medium Development Goals of the government in reducing poverty as indicated in the 2011-2016 Philippine Development Plan.

Mayor Rodolfo Buray and vice-mayor Shirley Taroy signed the MoA for

the local government of Gitagum while mayor Roberto Lagrosas signed in behalf of the LGU of Manticao.

The infrastructure projects are expected to provide the farmers more access to the markets and various trading centers, as well as

easier to transport their farm produces especially during the rainy season.

Castillo expressed optimism that the MoA signing, the first under GPB in northern Mindanao region for this year, signals the successful partnership between

SSS to launch OFW contact center

T

he Social Security System (SSS) will launch on October this year a newly created OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) Contact Center Unit (OFW-CSU) to bring their services faster to the overseas Filipino workers.

In a news release, SSS Senior Vice President and International Operations Division Head Judy Frances A. See said the new unit will handle direct contact points for OFWs to allow for a more differentiated servicing and faster resolution of their SSS concerns.

For its initial operations, the OFW-CSU will provide dedicated e-mail

support and local call services from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm on weekdays.

In addition, a special assistance desk will be available at the SSS main office in Diliman, Quezon City for walk-in transactions of OFWs, such as registration and issuance of SS numbers, enrollment in Flexi-fund Program, and verification of SSS records. It will also provide OFW members assistance in filing their loans, benefit claims and other SSS applications.

Hot moments in classrooms is one incident that sometimes cannot be prevented especially when people’s feelings that are often conflictual threatens teaching and learning in a class.

This could occur during discussions that involve an issue which someone deeply so much about, or someone in class has mentioned something that challenged other person’s perception, principle and belief.

Fortunately, there are developed techniques available, enabling class moderators to handle hot situations that are often unavoidable.

Education research author Lee Warren said in his book that using such techniques can open doors to topics formerly avoided and classroom dynamics formerly neglected. Most importantly, exploring these tensions can lead to deep learning.

In dealing with hot situations, moderators are challenged to manage theirselves so as to make these techniques useful and to find opportunities to which he

could provide explanations and teachings, in order to help students learn in and from the situation.

The best strategy to this situation, according to Warren, is rested upon the assumption that it is the teacher’s responsibility both to help students learn something from the moment and to care for and protect all participants, perhaps the student generating the hot moment. Doing this does not assure that discomfort can be avoided, but fact be told, learning about hot topics is difficult and uncomfortable, but no one should be blamed of all conflicts.

Instead, all individuals involved should be protected in order for learning to be possible.

Learning is best learned in situations that appeal for learning. Hot moments is one of those. It is not only facts and ideas that are presented but also perceptions calling debates and opening discussions wherein good grounds for realizations and in entirety, higher learning.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) is now allowing the processing and deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and in Israel after it received the Department of Foreign Affairs’ communication lowering the alert levels in the three countries.

In a news release, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz, chairman of the POEA Governing Board said the DFA has officially

notified the DOLE that it has lowered the alert levels in the Gaza Strip from Alert Level 4 to Alert Level 2; in Israel, also from Alert Level 4 to Alert Level 2; and in the West Bank from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 1, effective 11 September 2014.

Baldoz said the Board has issued three separate resolutions on the processing and deployment of OFWs on the said countries.

to Gaza are temporarily suspended but the processing and deployment of returning OFWs are allowed, subject to compliance with documentary requirements.

On the other hand the POEA resumed the processing and deployment of newly hired OFWs to Israel and the West Bank.

“This development is a welcome sign for our OFWs abroad, for it enhances their safety. Although this may not be stable yet, we hope

this continues, if possible, until all the tension eases,” Baldoz said.

Despite the development Baldoz still urged OFWs in the concerned countries to be vigilant.

“Stay alert and monitor the events in those areas. If you feel that your security and safety is compromised, you can always go to the Philippine Embassy and our Philippine overseas Labor Office (POLO),” Baldoz said.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is now in search for the most qualified candidate for the top position of its Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) following the retirement of its Director, Dr. Nuna E. Almanzor.

The ITDI, the oldest DOST agency, is among the institutions that laid the groundwork for science and technology in the country way back in 1901. Today, it is one of the DOST’s research and development institutes, and it focuses on multidisciplinary industrial R&D, technical services, and knowledge translation or technology transfer and

Jasaan Focusing another second look on a place in the middle of Misamis Oriental

asaan town in Misamis Oriental is a home to me for 21 years of my life. This place spells my memorable childhood days. I have stepped my feet in various places around the town and all I can say is that Jasaan is simply amazing, and it is a hometown that I could always boast to my friends coming from other locations.

This peaceful town is situated along Macajalar Bay, in central coast of Northern

Mindanao, 30 kilometers east of Cagayan de Oro City.

It is bounded by the municipalities of Balingasag in east, Villanueva in west and Claveria in north.

The municipality of Jasaan sits in a location perfect for summer break and holiday getaways. It is known for its pool resorts, springs, rivers and beaches that attracts tourists from both nearby and far places.

It is also a home of Sagpulon Falls, referred to as

an acclaimed tourist attraction in the country. Jasaan is abundant in water resources which the town considered as an asset to be proud of, and might be the reason on the creation of a festive and colorful Katubigan Festival celebrated annually on the month of December.

This town, considered small though, has also embraced the culture of modernism, making it at par with other municipalities in the province.

Jasaan is one of the places not only rich in water resources but also tradition that has been preserved even its oldest form and cultural heritage that might reached not just centennial year. Town that considered “small” to some though, but I must admit that, a native Jasaanon as I am, I haven’t touched all its edges and corners. There are still some more doors to explore.

HISTORY Like other places, Jasaan has also its own noble history that can even traced in pre-Spanish era. In various records, Jasaan is already an existing municipality in 1803. It was reduced, however, to a barangay in 1903 and placed under the jurisdiction of Balingasag town during the times Americans has occupied the town, after Spaniards.

The name “Jasaan” was given by a Spanish missionary who chanced upon a native sharpening a bolo in Sapong Spring, now called Kota, Aplaya. The missionary asked for the name of the place. However, the native replied "Ag-hasaa" meaning, "I am sharpening my bolo." The missionary, thinking that he was answered correctly, called the place "Ag-hasaa." Unfortunately, he find the term difficult to pronounce, so he called it "Hasaan" instead. Later time, it was changed to "Jasaan."

The early Jasaanons struggled as heroes just to restore the municipal status of Jasaan. In result, President Elpidio Quirino issued an executive order no. 165, dated August 18, 1948, that this made Jasaan regain its municipal status. November 10, 1948 is engraved as a date when Jasaan has conducted a formal inauguration and first set of municipal leaders assumed office.

Jasaan, undergone changes and developments that its leaders has implemented over the years. Thus, from a so-called “sleepy and sparsely populated community,”

Jasaan developed into an agro-industrial town, one of the giant contributors for Misamis Oriental.

FAMOUS SPOTS Jasaan, as I mentioned before, is a place rich in terms of water resources. It is just also so fortunate for this town to be occupied by people who are naturally nature-loving and resourceful.

The resources are opted to be developed and its natural beauty is enhanced, reason Jasaan is one of locations in Misamis Oriental that excels when it comes to Tourism.

The Falls of Sagpulon is one of these sites. I remember during my participation of National Schools Press Conference last 2005, this falls is considered as one of the most visited spots in Northern Mindanao. Sagpulon is located in Jasaan’s barangay San Isidro, only seven kilometres away from the national highway. The falls has a height of 350 me-

tres. Tourists can never fail in expecting a breathtaking experience through the perfect panorama of the hanging bridge.

Untouched dimensions of the falls, such as small caves and cliffs, also awaits adventurers and travelers.

The unexplored rock formations invite some more tourists to come and enjoy the breath-taking scenery and adventure.

Agutayan Island, simply known as White Island to residents, is also a famous site found in the coast of Jasaan.

It has 5,000-square meter fine white sand situated on a three-hectare marine sanctuary, serving as breeding ground of marine species such as the giant clams, called as Taclobo. The white island also expose an amazing marine life. Under waters is a kingdom of Agutayan reefs.

Have anyone said hurtful words to you in the past?

I also had my personal share of trauma and emotional pain. It was when I fail miserably in my studies, and even dropped out from college. I was often reminded that I will be a good for nothing in life. I will never be successful, and will be poor since I do not have any degree to present.

People who said these words to me didn’t hurt me physically, but unconsciously hurting me mentally and emotionally.

Words may not hurt physically but it sure cuts emotionally.

The emotional scars of hurtful words are sometimes too damaging, it can cause emotional and mental stress.

This may happen to you a long time ago or while you were young.

But this is what I learned from becoming a victim of verbal abuse.

You may forget what exactly they said, but what you will not forget; is the feeling it gave you. Do you understand what I mean?

Let us not repeat the mistake of the people who hurt us in the past. And if you were hurt, it is time for you to get healed.

If you want to be healed from the pain of hurtful words, and trauma; you have to be brave. Do something that you have never done before. Are you expecting that time will heal your emotional wounds? No,

it will never heal. You will just forget it for quite some time, but if left unresolved, it will still come back to haunt you.

How Can You Be Healed?

ADMIT YOU’RE HURTING Admission is the first step to healing. Acknowledge that you are in an abusive relationship. Denial will not make it better, you will just make it worst. Admit that the damage has been done.

JASAAN | from Page C1 away, the place is a sole naked white thing having a lone cottage for the sanctuary outpost that stands on the side. Its blue-green and shallow clear-water, however, is a perfect venue for swimming, snorkeling and diving.

Immaculate Conception Church is also one of places cited as treasures of Jasaan. In fact, National Commission for Culture and the Arts recently visited it and declared the church as a cultural national treasure. The church is also beneficiary-site of Taoid Heritage Program, an annual heritage conservation program.

The Immaculate Conception Church existed for more than a hundred years already, reason it is declared as centennial treasure, as well. It is estimated to be completed between late 19th and 20th century. It stands at the middle of Barangay Upper Jasaan of the town. It is made up of bricks and wood. In 2001, National Museum of the Philippines declared it as National Treasure of the country and Northern Mindanao. In the mean time, the church is on the stage of on-going repair and restoration.

Aside from these three, Jasaan is also home of Mulawan Beach, Pablourdes Beach, Punta Gorda Beach, Rosa Beach, Liyang Beach, Corrales Spring in Barangay Corrales, Dumagooc River, Cabulig River, Kahulugan Spring, Mauswagonor Magallanes Cave in Barangay Bobontugan, Pinangosob Springs, Villabongga Cave in Barangay San Antonio and Agutayan Reef, among others. There are also old ancestral and antique houses, mostly are Hispanic-style houses, that can be found along the main streets of Jasaan and in its barangays just like in Bobontugan. To this time, a lot of sites have been developed and added to list of tourist destinations that can be found only in this town.

THE 66th FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY Every September first of the year, Jasaan commemorates the day this town has founded.

Fortunately, I came to witness this event.

This year, the celebration revolved in the theme “Ang panaghiusa mao ang kabilin sa paglambo sa Jasaan.” In the spearheading of the Municipal Mayor Grace A. Jardin, various activities have been organized to entertain town residents and visitors alike. These activities include sports festivals and tournaments, Wow Jasaan and Katubigan song composition contests, town parade, fireworks display, ‘Barangay Home-grown Festival’ Night presented by barangay officials and staff, Festival Queen search, Unity Run, ‘Festivals of the Philippines’ Night and Indak Pinoy presentation of Department of Education and Time Travel Night given by the local government unit.

There is also an Agri-tourism Fair held exhibiting the products of various barangays such as sweet potato, cassava, corn, banana and coconut,

among others. In addition, for coastal and upland barangays, the local government unit conducted an Agri-coco booth contest. Each booth is decorated with coconut materials being the main component of a festive agricultural motif. The exhibit exposes the resourcefulness, innovativeness and skills of Jasaanons for booths display quality Jasaan-owned products having proper grouping, arrangement and labels.

The celebration also enveloped the delivering of State of the Municipal Address (SOMA) of Mayor Jardin in front of witnessing Jasaanons and visitors. Cruz solar dryer, road-concreting projects, Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Project and several others.

Further, the mayor mentioned the on-going and future projects and also, her plans for the town.

The latest attraction of Jasaan came as highlight of this year’s celebration. Famous to the residents as Dancing Fountain of Jasaan, Mayor Jardin said that this fountain is made to give entertainment to Jasaanons, especially to the oldies. As what she said during her SOMA, “Ang kaligayahang hatid ng fountain na iyan ay hindi matutumbasan ng pera (The happiness brought by this fountain cannot be bought by money).” The construction of this project worth P 6.5 million coming from the town’s development fund, and in which the water source is the local government unit pipe. The fountain is more attractive at night, emitting different colors of dancing water. The best feature also of this attraction include the water lines dance while music is playing.

Jasaan is indeed a paradise full of beautiful creations that are truly blessing from above. The spots and facts mentioned in this article might be just few of the many trying to evoke interest, inviting adventure seekers out there. Truth be told, there are still some which are just quietly standing in the midst of this town, waiting to be explored.

Personally, I am a native of this town. I grow up here and explored so many things, that I found these all so interesting. Honest to say, however, I can say that each time I see news on TV and posts on social networking sites about Jasaan and its new innovations, I still can say that amazement still collides me. I still feel thrilled and surprised, making me realize that I do not know everything.

This realization came that seems eye-opener and encouraged me to discover more things about my hometown and other places in Misamis Oriental.

Long ago, in my younger years, I dreamed to visit far and new places, locations away from Jasaan, not knowing that there are still places in town that could be too new to me. Indeed, a lot of adventures just sit in the place where we are in. There’s more fun in 7,107 islands in the Philippines, but there are much more fun in this home Misamis Oriental!

Time to get geeky WHEN you hear the term “geek wars”, what comes to mind? Is it about bloody clashes between computer wizards, complete with swords and guns? Or maybe they use lasers, too. Maybe they are justs IT folks who idolize Game of Thrones.

Nah, neither of the above.

Geek Wars was actually an offshoot of Trivia Night CDO which abruptly ended in late 2012. But then again, what is Trivia Night? Trivia Night is the Philippine version of a quiz show made popular in nightspots in England at the onset of the 21st century. While specific formats vary, most pub

quizzes depend on answers being written in response to questions which may be announced by a quizmaster.

It is up to the contestantss to form teams (usually between six to ten), with each team occupying one table at the bar.

Questions are usually taken from a quiz book and are divided into three

NORTHERN Mindanao’s premier dance company Next Moves was already founded in 2004 but it was only in 2009 that it really took off under the very able tutelage of artistic director Roger Odron.

For five years, Mr. Odron has steered quite well the direction of Next Moves, reaping awards here and there. In September 2010, they represented Region 10 for the Globe Campus Connect Dance Showdown in Manila. In October 2011, Next Moves was a national finalist for the Shell V-Power Nitro+ Dance Supremacy, a feat that they repeated in August 2012. By July 2012, they also made it to the national finals of Smart Jump In Dance Off. By November this year, Next Moves will be the only dance group from Visayas and Mindanao to join the prestigious Ego Supreme Dance Crew in Araneta Coliseum.

It is thus only deserving that Next Moves reaped a concert all her own for the fifth anniversary of the

group’s tutelage under Mr. Odron. And what better date to choose the concert than on Intramurals Week of Next Moves’ home, Liceo de Cagayan University.

For weeks, Liceo students and dance aficionados alike have looked forward into Next Moves’ aptlynamed and highly publicized High Five anniversary concert that was to be held at Rodelsa Hall on September 23, 2014 for not just one but two shows – a matinee at 2:00 p.m. and a gala at 6:00 p.m. Next Moves certainly did not disappoint their fans.

As early as quarter to 2 p.m., the 700-seat Rodelsa Hall was already filled to the brim and the crowd was roaring with excitement, obviously couldn’t wait for the concert to begin. Then the video presentation rolled and the crowd roared some more. Finally the first batch of 46 performers unleashed with a string of modern contemporary routines – jazz, ballet, orthodox and then some.

One male performer in the group stood out because of his stunning likeness to celebrity heartthrob Enrique Gil. Every time 21-year-old Ken Escrin went on stage, the ladies in the crowd swooned wow and screamed for more. Ken is actually Next Moves’ own assistant director, second only to Mr. Odron. He is an HRM graduate of Liceo de Cagayan University.

Then the modern pop routine came next. The crowd cheered wildly as Liceo de Cagayan University’s most beautiful alumni - Miss Cagayan de Oro

2014 Beatrice Alvarez-Pohl and Miss Cagayan de Oro 2013 Amadea Piatti – made a cameo dancing with the Next Moves to the tune of Lady Gaga’s Applause...read this...in their stilletos! Five more modern pop tracks were executed by the dancers who are all full academic scholars of the institution. That means, according to Mr. Odron, that they have to excel in their academic studies aside from the four hours of practice that they do for six days a week. Man, if that ain’t a feat in itself, I don’t know how you call it!

The hiphop series came last. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a female dancer who moved so flawlessly she must have been a hiphopper since third grade. I didn’t guess wrong. Backstage, I would later learn that 20-year-old Kristelle Abang has already embraced the love of hiphop since high school and when she auditioned for Next Moves way back in 2012, she got accepted on the spot.

Kring2x as she is fondly called is adept in bboying, krumping and locking but she has me smitten on her waacking style – which is the rhythmic movement of arms over and behind the shoulder.

The two-hour concert left the audience simply in awe and looking forward for the next performance of Next Moves. For now, they will have to prep themselves for the November competition in Manila. And Ken, Kring2x and the rest of the crew will hug the limelight again.
