DOT Launches Visit Philippines 2015 in Normin T

By MIKE BAÑOS, Editor-at-Large

he Department of Tourism in Region X today launches 2015 as “Visit the Philippines Year” (VPY) in Northern Mindanao at the upscale Centrio Mall in Cagayan de Oro City. “This launch is a response to Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr.’s directive to move tourism out of Manila and urge people to visit other places such as Northern Mindanao,” said Catalino Chan III, DOT-X regional Director. Earlier Jimenez cited the key role of local government units (LGUs) in spurring tourism outside Metro Manila. "Kung saan masigasig talaga ang local [government], doon malakas ang tourism. Pag aktibista sa tourism ang LGU, magsa-succeed," Jimenez stressed. The DOT and the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), its marketing and promotions arm, launched its new campaign during the Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX) at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City last September 4, 2014. Jimenez said the new campaign will not replace "It's More Fun in the Philippines” but is meant to refresh

and sustain the original campaign. DOT also launched a microsite (http:// phl2015.itsmorefuninthephilippines. com/) as a directory of the various events around the country under the recently improved DOT website (http:// itsmorefuninthephilippines.com/). Domingo Ramon C. Enerio III, TBP chief operating officer said the agency will stress five main themes for 2015: 1) history and culture, 2) music and arts 3) lifestyle and entertainment, 4) business meetings, and 5) sports, adventure, and eco-tourism. To kick off History and Culture in January 2015 is Pope Francis’ 40-day pilgrimage to the Philippines. September will mark the 70th anniversary of the final battles of World War II in the country. For Music and the Arts, Enerio said some of the biggest acts in the entertainment world such as One Direction and Justin Timberlake will visit the country in March 2015 for live performances and shows. In the fields of lifestyle and entertainment, the Philippines will host Madrid Fusion Manila, billed as the biggest culinary event in the world, in April 2015. Enerio said this event would bring national and international DOT | Page B2

BAGONG TAON, BAGONG BUHAY http://www.chinkeetan.com/

TAN by CHINKEE

As we end the year 2014, lahat tayo ay may sari-sariling mga tradition at pamahiiin. Some celebrate it by lighting fire crackers para daw itaboy ang masasamang espiritu. Some are wearing POLKA DOTS, kasi it represents daw MONEY. More POLKA DOTS, more MONEY. In every family, meron silang sari-sariling tradition. Para sa amin it has been over 15 years that we practice a different kind of tradition. Nais ko lang i-sahre sa inyo kung ano ang aming ginagawa tuwing end of the year:

WRITE TEN THINGS THAT WE ARE BELIEVING GOD FOR Ginagamit namin ang pagkakataon upang isulat ang most IMPOSSIBLE things that we are believing God for. The things we write ay mga bagay na impossible, ika nga, sky is the limit. Turning dreams into reality does not depend on the size of your resources, but on the size your dreams.

THINK. REFLECT. APPLY. This is my DREAM CHALLENGE for you this year of 2015: Magsulat ka nang 10 IMPOSSIBLE DREAMS mo sa isang pirasong papel. ...DOT from Page B1

chefs, journalists, and food companies from all over which should encourage local tourism stakeholders to raise themselves up to global standards. By November 2015, the country would host Asia the Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meetings and Leaders’ Summit with over 25,000 international delegates expected to attend.

The APEC meetings would also be hosted by Boracay and Iloilo City in the Western Visayas; Tagaytay City in Southern Tagalog; Metro Cebu in the Central Visayas; Bagac, Bataan and Clark, Pampanga in Central Luzon; and Legazpi City, and Albay in Bicol. Not the least, the country will host international sporting events such as triathlons, martial arts, eco-marathons, yacht races, beach volleyball tournaments, and tennis exhibition matches. Among these is the international white water rafting competition to be hosted by Cagayan de Oro City, the Diving Resort Travel Expo in Manila in April and the Siargao International Surfing Competition in August. “What will truly sustain Visit the Philippines Year 2015 campaign are the people themselves. I enjoin the businesses, communities, and locals to play an active part in spreading and amplifying our messages, enticing would-be visitors to come visit our shores,” Jimenez said. The DOT already launched VPY 2015 at the Conrad Centennial Hotel Singapore on October 28 and at the Lotte Hotel in Jung-gu, central Seoul, South Korea last Nov. 4. The Philippines was one of only five countries (with China, Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong) which had over 1 million Korean visitors annually, with 1,165,789 Koreans arriving in 2013, a figure

ON this sixth day of January, I’m feeling devilish so I’m gonna write not just about the good but the bad as well. Never mind the ugly. Not if you count someone who looks like a frog. And I’m also feeling nostalgic today. So I’m gonna write about DJs of my favorite music station of yesteryears, Sandy 101. During my high school, college and early postcollege years, I used to juggle listening between Sandy 101 and 89.3 Killer Bee. You see, they basically had the same playlist. Their jocks could speak English well unlike sadly the DJs of FM stations today. They were competing but in a friendly way. Killer Bee had this Rick Dees and local Top 40 countdown Sun-

day mornings. Sandy would churn theirs in the afternoon. And the DJs…oh how I adore the lovely and angelic voices of their DJs! There was the very cool voice of Cloyd Phoenix. There was R-Funk. There was Yuki. There was Drue the Dude. There was Teeroni. There was Sexy Casey. There was the late Foxy Roxy. There

was the late Sgt. Stan. There was the late….oops he’s still alive…Mr. J. While they were bantering on air, you could hear the coolness exuding from these dudes and dudettes. And then Sandy 101 went off the air. Cloyd Phoenix became an award-winning indie filmmaker. R-Funk became a marketing expert. Yuki

became a successful woman in Cebu. Drue the Dude did what he does best…hardcore metal rock. Teeroni became a successful financial executive in New York. Mr. J became a…well, let’s save the worst for last. Now I’m going to write here about Sexy Casey. Just like Teeroni, Sexy Casey fled to NY after Sandy 101 went down. The lady was quite successful there. Sometime in 2014, she came back to the Philippines. To her beloved home city of CDO. On two conditions. She must fulfill first two of her dreams. And triumphantly she did. Sexy Casey was able to organize her very first fashion show in no less than Centrio sometime in September last year.

In fact, she had her own models under her wing aptly called Casey’s Concepts. The second dream she did fulfill last December. It was about organizing her own outreach in not just one but two venues….Tahanan ng Kabataan and Boys Town. More than 150 kids were given goods and drinks last December 20 at the said places. As Sexy Casey would say, “I love children and they ought to have a chance to have a better life. I have interviewed some of the cases – they are abused by their own flesh and blood. Some were abandoned, some have their parents in prison. As a broadcaster in the media, I found my purpose in life in fulfilling God’s will to share His love to these children.” In

2015, Sexy Casey is planning to put her own foundation here so she could sustain her vision. Wow what an adorable woman to emulate! Foxy Roxy and Sgt. Stan must be very proud of her from up there. I’m pretty sure they don’t feel the same way towards Mr. J.
