TALK

There is no asifism without rabbitism. „riding the tiger, help people to help you by helping them do what they wanted to do all along“

Stitching Worlds Mi. 26.3. 路 19:00 ebrukurbak.net

TALK This talk focuses on an ongoing investigation, Stitching Worlds, which connects the shared artistic research territory between arts, design, open culture, digital fabrication, information technology and electronics to the engineering and scientific methodologies of textile technology. The project investigates textile technology as a controversial means for digital fabrication, particularly of the electronic object. We decisively question whether ‘what’ we make is really more important than ‘how’ we make things. Instead of introducing new products that meet new buyers, we explore new production procedures that call for new makers. This project , in collaboration with Irene Posch, has taken shape during residencies at international platforms such as the V2_ and Eyebeam, and has been recently granted with a PEEK artistic research fund from the FWF.

SPEAKER Ebru is an artist, researcher and educator, currently based in Vienna. She investigates critical research and experimental design as tools for artistic intervention. Her current work involves conventional textile production techniques as alternative means to create electronic objects from scratch. Ebru has shown her work in international platforms such as the Ars Electronica Festival, Siggraph and File Festival among others. ebrukurbak.net

TALK Deaf from birth, Christine Sun Kim has established her own “voice through experimentation on sound art such as score and transcript drawings, which raise questions on linguistic authority, ownership of sound, and oral languages as social currency. Those visuals and codes on paper are the result of her action of combining information systems and languages that are known to her and letting grammar rub against each other. Sun Kim has came upon more similarities than differences between music and American Sign Language, which will be discussed during her talk.

SPEAKER Christine Sun Kim, who was born in California, holds an MFA in Sound/ Music from Bard College and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts. As a composer and social practitioner, she uses the medium of sound through technology to investigate and rationalize her relationship with sound and spoken languages. Her art has been multi-categorized as drawings, performances, installations, workshops, and talks. Kim has exhibited and performed in worldwide venues such as Sound Live Tokyo; Recess Activities, New York; Plug In ICA, Winnipeg; and Calder Foundation New York. She has received numerous awards, including a Mellon Tri-College Creative Residency at Haverford College, a Residency at Southern Exposure, and a Fellowship at TED. christinesunkim.com vimeo.com/77957602 moma.org/explore/multimedia/videos/285/1366 vimeo.com/68027393 Bildcredit: Amber Mahoney

Mark Coniglio

Digital Reflection vs. Intervention Mi. 28.5. 路 19:00 troikaranch.org

TALK Pioneering media artist and Troika Ranch co-founder Mark Coniglio will discuss his current perspective on digitally enhanced performance: where we‘ve been, where we are now, and where we might be going. Specifically, he will contrast the dominant approach of the „digital reflection“ – where the media serves as a „mirror“ of the performers action – with the idea of a „digital intervention“ where systems or algorithms germane to digital technology are used to intervene and disturb the creative process.

SPEAKER Composer and media artist Mark Coniglio is recognized as a pioneering force in the field of interactive performance. He co-founded the media intensive dance group Troika Ranch in 1994, and later created Isadora – a software tool that provides deep interactive control over digital media. He recently received the World Technology Award, which recognized his influence and long-term legacy in art and technology. troikaranch.org

TALK Social networks have become the core of marketing and advertising. Brands use them as the fastest way of engaging their customers. Public events collect tweets, instagram pics and Facebook status in order to to describe their events with their visitors words. These and many other cases use the social network infrastructure as they are meant to, how can we hack this mechanism in order to generate new meanings? Can this huge amount of information, experiences and images generate new aesthetics?

SPEAKER Emanuele Bonetti, 1985. Co-founder of parcodiyellowstone graphic design and illustration. Born in ♼ with graphic design I‘m trying to combine my passion with open source culture, new media and design ethics. As parcodiyellowstone we deal with graphic design and visual communication, both on a traditional and on an experimental level. yellowston.es

TALK Präparierte Instrumente, Improvisation, Neue Musik - in Österreich, speziell in Wien gedeiht eine aussergewöhnliche Szene experimenteller Musiker verschiedenster Ausrichtungen. Ideen, Feldversuche, Erfahrungen, Korrelierendes aus darstellender und bildender Kunst.

TALK Schmiede is a network of people strongly engaged in various fields of arts, design, technology and performance with various professional competences. Members get together for intense experimentation for two weeks per year. Cooperations, network-activity and mutual support go on during the year through digital communication. Non-hierarchic knowledge transfer and interdisciplinary exchange plays a constituting role for Schmiede. Translocal communities of interest have gained importance as places of individual and collective resources for professional development. The talk discusses results of a research project about the sustainability of the semi-digital network for artist’s biographies. The research is embedded in international EU-Project “What’s the deal” about young urban cultures and sustainability.

SPEAKER Korinna Lindinger plays with aesthetics, electronics and materials - people call it art. She also works on comprehending causalities colleagues call it social science. And she likes to choose and frame art pieces and processes - bureaucracy calls it curatorial work. wtd.cavetec.tk maschen.at Bildcredit: Ela Grieshaber
