Onlangs werd in De Loketten, de bezoekers- en tentoonstellingsruimte van het Vlaams Parlement, het designpaviljoen van Stefan Schöning en Guiseppe Farris in gebruik genomen. Daarmee kreeg het Vlaams Parlement een volwaardige brasserie, parlementswinkel en lees- en informatiehoek voor de bezoekers. De Loketten was van bij de ingebruikname van de parlementsgebouwen bestemd als ontmoetingsplaats. Een betere bezoekersinfrastructuur drong zich dan ook op.

Elk jaar organiseert het Vlaams Parlement in De Loketten ook een tentoonstelling rond een kunstenaar of discipline. Zo vonden er in het verleden al tentoonstellingen plaats rond Roger Raveel, Jan Fabre, Panamarenko, design in Vlaanderen, hedendaagse fotografie en Antwerpse mode. Daarmee hee het Vlaams Parlement zich onbetwistbaar op de kaart gezet als organisator van spraakmakende tentoonstellingen in Vlaanderen. Het ligt voor de hand dat dit niet de voornaamste taak is van het Vlaams Parlement, maar meer behoort tot de filosofie van dit Huis om een open huis, of beter een glazen huis te zijn dat naast zijn eerste opdracht – decreten maken, de Vlaamse regering controleren en de begroting goedkeuren – ook oog hee voor wat zich in de buitenwereld afspeelt.

Ook vandaag wordt de Vlaamse kunst wereldwijd bejubeld en geniet de Vlaamse hedendaagse kunst in al haar vormen en realisaties grote faam. Wij zijn dan ook tevreden en fier dat wij in De Loketten in 2010 de kunstenaarsfamilie Vermeersch te gast hebben met een tentoonstelling die niet in één zin te vatten is. De Vermeerschen beoefenen immers kunst in vele vormen, van schilder- en beeldhouwkunst over design tot woordkunst. Drie generaties Vermeerschen hebben zich in de nationale en internationale kunstscene weten te bewegen en te bewijzen. Zij vormen het bewijs van de appreciatie die men in het buitenland voor de Vlaamse kunstenaars opbrengt. Een tentoonstelling rond deze familie is in het Vlaams Parlement dan ook op zijn plaats.

Het organiseren van tentoonstellingen in deze monumentale zaal, en in de toekomst ook van andere evenementen, voldoet tevens aan een andere opdracht die het Vlaams Parlement zichzelf hee opgelegd : het samenbrengen van mensen rond artistieke en andere evenementen om hen zo kennis te laten maken met hun parlement en de werking ervan. Het streven naar een betere werking van het Vlaams Parlement is de eerste en voortdurende zorg van dit Huis en het samenbrengen van burgers kan daar een belangrijke bijdrage toe leveren.

Een tentoonstelling over het werk van de kunstenaarsfamilie Vermeersch past helemaal in het tentoonstellingsbeleid dat in de voorbije jaren voor het Vlaams Parlement is uitgetekend in samenspraak met de Commissie voor de Integratie van Kunstwerken, die onder leiding stond van Flor Bex en grote aandacht hee voor wat zich in de Vlaamse actuele kunstwereld afspeelt. Het was vanuit die visie een wijze beslissing om Pieter Vermeersch, een van de jongere telgen van de kunstenaarsfamilie en zelf een succesvol kunstenaar, als curator voor de tentoonstelling aan te stellen. Dit boek is niet zozeer een catalogus van de tentoonstelling als wel een inkijk in de wereld van de Vermeerschen, die elk op hun eigen manier met hun artistieke bevlogenheid omgaan. e design pavilion by Stefan Shöning and Guisepe Farris was recently inaugurated in De Loketten, the visitors and exhibition space of the Flemish Parliament. is gave the Flemish parliament a fully-fledged brasserie and a parliament store, as well as a reading and information corner for visitors. Since the inauguration of the parliament building, De Loketten was intended to serve as a meeting place. In this respect, an improved visitor’s infrastructure became imperative.

Every year, the Flemish Parliament organises a major exhibition on a particular artist or discipline in De Loketten. In the past, as a consequence, we have seen exhibitions on Roger Raveel, Jan Fabre, Panamarenko, Design in Flanders, Contemporary Photo­ graphy and Antwerp Fashion. is has put the Flemish Parliament firmly on the map as an organiser of famous exhibitions in Flanders. It goes without saying that this is not one of the Flemish Parliament’s primary tasks, but it fits rather well with the philosophy of this House to be an open house, or better still, a glass house that aside from its primary tasks – of making decrees, controlling the Flemish government and approving the budget – also keeps an eye open on what is happening in the world outside.

Today, Flemish art is praised worldwide and Flemish contemporary art in all its shapes and realisations enjoys a great deal of fame. We are therefore pleased and proud to welcome the Vermeersch family of artists to De Loketten in 2010, with an exhibition that cannot be described in one single sentence, since the different members of the Vermeersch family practise art in many forms, from painting and sculpture to design and poetry. ree generations of Vermeersch artists have been active and have proved themselves on the national and international art scenes. ey are living proof of the high regard in which Flemish artists are held abroad. It is more than appropriate, in this respect, that an exhibition that focuses on this family should take place in the Flemish Parliament.

Organising exhibitions and other future events within this monumental space also complies with the task the Flemish Parliament has imposed upon itself : to bring people together around artistic and other events in order to let them become acquainted with the parliament and its work. To strive for a better working of the Flemish Parliament is the first and ongoing concern of this House and the bringing together of citizens can make an important contribution in this respect.

An exhibition about the works of the Vermeersch family of artists also fits perfectly within the exhibition policy that has been elaborated by the Flemish Parliament in recent years in collaboration with the Commission for the Integration of Artworks, headed by Flor Bex, which pays great attention to what is happening in the Flemish contemporary art field. It was this vision that lay behind the wise decision to appoint Pieter Vermeersch, one of the younger members of the artistic family and a successful artist himself, to serve as the curator for this exhibition. is book is not so much a catalogue of the exhibition as a view into the world of the Vermeersches, who each express their artistic inspiration in their own way. Over het fenomeen ‘Kunstenaarsfamilies’ e ‘Artist Family’ phenomenon Francis Smets

Nemen we als voorbeeld het ‘geval’ Pieter Bruegel de Jonge (1564 – 1638), telg uit een dynastie van schilders die zich over meerdere generaties uitstrekt.1 Hij is de zoon van een beroemde vader, Pieter Bruegel de Oude (1525 ? – 1569). Deze laatste is gehuwd met Maria Coecke, dochter van zijn leermeester in Antwerpen, Pieter Coecke van Aelst. Dat wijst erop dat het kunstbedrijf in die periode een vrij gesloten wereld is.

De jarenlange opleidingen gebeuren in vaak grote ateliers waar op bestelling gewerkt wordt. De zonen van de meester die het atelier leidt, zetten de familiale broodwinning voort. Huwelijken tussen zijn dochters en zijn leerlingen vormen geen uitzondering.

Kunst is in veel gevallen een familieaangelegenheid. Het is in de zestiende eeuw de normale gang van zaken. Schilder wordt men van vader op zoon, binnen de strikte orde van het Sint-Lucasgilde. Pieter Bruegel de Oude is te jong gestorven om nog voor de opleiding van zijn zonen te kunnen instaan. Maar binnen het Antwerpse SintLucasgilde genieten zij als telgen van een erkende meester wel bepaalde privileges.

Het maakt het hun gemakkelijker om zelf meester te worden.

Pieter Bruegel de Oude ligt aan de grondslag van het artistieke prestige dat zich afspiegelt op zijn nazaten. Zijn andere zoon, Jan Brueghel de Oude (1568 – 1625), slaagt er bovendien in deze bekendheid in maatschappelijk (lees : pecuniair) succes om te zetten. De glorie van zijn vader straalt ook af op Pieter Brueghel de Jonge, die gretig van deze gelukkige omstandigheid gebruikmaakt. Hij verschijnt in de boeken van het Antwerpse Sint-Lucasgilde – de Liggeren – in 1584 – 1585. Overwegend komt hij aan de kost door het stelselmatig kopiëren van werken van zijn vader. Zijn atelier is een echte fabriek waar productie neerkomt op reproductie.2 Van Winterlandschap met vogelknip bijvoorbeeld realiseert hij meer dan vijftig exemplaren. Zijn cliënteel is niet het meest koopkrachtige. Maar door de grote aantallen die hij op de markt brengt, kan hij behoorlijk aan de kost komen. De roem van zijn vader is voor hem een zegen.

Take the example of the ‘case’ of Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564 – 1638), descendant of a dynasty of painters that spans several generations.1 He is the son of a famous father, Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525 ? – 1569). e latter is married to Maria Coecke, daughter of his master in Antwerp, Pieter Coecke van Aelst. is points to the fact that the artist’s practice was a rather closed world throughout that period. e year-long apprenticeships often took place in very large studios where works were made on commission. e sons of the master who headed the studio continued the family business. Marriages between the master’s daughters and his students were nothing exceptional. Art, in many cases, is a family affair. In the sixteenth century this is just the way things are. One becomes painter from father to son, within the strict guidelines of the Guild of Saint Luke. Pieter Bruegel the Elder died much too young to have been able to complete the training of his sons, but at the Antwerpbased Guild of Saint Luke, they enjoy certain specific privileges as sons of a recog­ nised master. It makes it easier for them to become masters themselves.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder lies at the heart of the artistic prestige that will reflect upon his descendants. His other son, Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568 – 1625) manages to translate this fame into social (read : pecuniary) success. e glory of his father also affects Pieter Brueghel the Younger, who eagerly takes advantage of these fortunate circumstances. He is published in the books of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke – the Liggeren – in 1584 – 1585. On the whole, he makes a living by systematically copying his father’s works. His studio is a real factory where production equals reproduction.2 In this way, he makes more than fifty copies of Winterlandschap met vogelknip. His clientele is not the most affluent. e large quantities of works he brings onto the market, do allow, however, for a decent living. His father’s fame is a true blessing for him. ings are quite different for Lucien Pissarro (1863 – 1944), son of the great Camille Pissarro (1830 – 1903). Camille, child of parents who ran an ironmongery on the Antilles, is the founder of a dynasty which will continue painting from generation to generation, even up to the present day with Frédéric Boni-Pissarro (°1964).

Camille’s five sons all become artists, but such a successful father is a handicap they try in vain to overcome. Ludovic Rodo disappointedly gives up and concentrates on archiving his father’s oeuvre. Georges solves the problem by adopting the name Manzana and switching to furniture design. Lucien is taught how to paint by his father and courageously carries on. Camille does everything to promote, recommend, and sell his son’s work, but it proves impossible to compete with the monument that is his father.

By the time Lucien starts his career, Camille Pissarro’s years of struggle have yielded results. As far as history is concerned, he can definitively be considered one of the pioneering artists of the nineteenth century. How is one to establish oneself as an innovator in the shadow of an original figure of this stature ? Lucien will never truly succeed, despite his talent and perseverance. Heel anders vergaat het met Lucien Pissarro (1863 – 1944), zoon van de grote Camille Pissarro (1830 – 1903). Camille, zelf een telg van ouders die een ijzerwinkel runnen op de Antillen, is de stichter van een dynastie die van generatie op generatie het schilderen voortzet, tot op heden met Frédéric Bonin-Pissarro (°1964). De vijf zonen van Camille worden allen kunstenaars. Maar een zo geslaagde vader is een nadeel waar zij tevergeefs tegen opboksen. Ludovic Rodo gee het ontmoedigd op en legt zich toe op het archiveren van het oeuvre van zijn vader. Georges lost het op door zich Manzana te noemen en over te schakelen op meubelontwerp. Lucien leert het schilderen van zijn vader en zet moedig door. Camille doet er alles aan om het werk van zijn zoon bekend te maken, aan te bevelen en te verkopen. Maar het is onmogelijk om tegen het vaderlijke monument op te tornen.

Tegen de tijd dat Lucien aan zijn carrière begint, hebben voor Camille Pissarro de jaren van strijd hun vruchten afgeworpen. Voor de geschiedenis is hij definitief een baanbrekende figuur uit de negentiende eeuw. Hoe wil men ten overstaan van zo een originele figuur voor zichzelf nog een plaats als vernieuwer afdwingen ? Het zal voor Lucien nooit helemaal lukken, hoezeer hij ook begaafd is en volhoudt. Hij realiseert mooie, postimpressionistische schilderijen. Hij maakt zich verdienstelijk als mede­ oprichter van de Camden Town Group in Londen. Maar toch blij hij eens en voor altijd een figuur in de schaduw. De naam Pissarro vormt een handicap.

Hoe komt het dat voor Pieter Brueghel de Jonge de afstamming een zegen is en voor Lucien Pissarro een vloek ? Waarom er de ene een voordeel en de andere een nadeel ? Wat is er veranderd tussen de zestiende en de negentiende eeuw ?

Ooit was het normaal of zelfs de regel dat het ‘vak’ van schilder of beeldhouwer van vader op zoon overging (uitzonderlijk van vader op dochter, maar dat is een ander verhaal). Hoe verder we in de tijd terugkeren, hoe gebruikelijker dit is. Het Oude Egypte kan hier als voorbeeld dienen. De tentoonstelling De kunstenaars van de farao’s wierp een interessant licht op de anonieme ‘scheppers’, of zeggen we beter ‘uitvoerders’ van de schitterende monumenten in de Vallei van de Koningen.3 De archeolo­ gische site van Deir el-Medina legde de overblijfselen bloot van het gesloten woestijndorp waar de kunstenaars gemeenschappelijk en samen met hun families verbleven.

Zij hakten de tombes uit in de rotsen van ebe en versierden de koninklijke graven.

Het waren nederige ambachtslui in dienst van een hogere orde. Zij waren radertjes in een gigantische machinerie die nooit mocht stilvallen. Daarom ging het vak generaties lang over van vader op zoon, en dat over een periode van meer dan duizend jaar.

Het was per definitie erfelijk. Er was nauwelijks een keuze.

Zolang het onderscheid tussen kunst en ambacht niet gemaakt wordt, behoren familiestambomen tot de geplogenheden. Door heel de westerse middeleeuwen heen is dat het geval. De schilders en beeldhouwers uit die tijd zijn overwegend anoniem gebleven, net zo goed als de andere ambachtslui, zoals de steenkappers, de smeden, de zadelmakers 3. Ik heb zoveel keren het verstand verwenst, maar ik kan niet zonder, want het helpt mij in mijn medische taak.

Daar moet ik voortdurend kennis verwerven om structuren te bouwen die mij rust en werkijver geven.

e homo ludens

Ik ben gekipt uit een bizar nest, een ras moeilijk onder te brengen in de typologieën van Kretschmer en Sheldon.

Tot het atletische of leptosomale type behoor ik zeker niet. Ik heb een licht verheven kromming boven de zware wenkbrauwen, schuin opstijgend en samenkomend in een stevige achterhoofdsknobbel, de protuberantia occiputalis externa genaamd.

Mijn schedel is dik, mijn oogkassen zijn breed. In die kleine ruimte van binnen, ergens verscholen in het limbische systeem zit een verbeeldend en naar buskruit ruikend vat, een borrelend recipiënt waarin de intuïtieve beroering, de alchemie van mijn geest neerslaat.

I have been cut from a peculiar nest, my race is hard to classify in the typologies of Kretschmer and Sheldon. I definitely do not belong to the athletic or leptosomic type.

I have a slightly raised arch above the heavy eyebrows, raising obliquely upward and coming together in a sturdy node at the back of the head, called the protuberantia occiputalis externa.

My skull is thick, my eye sockets are wide. In the small space inside, hidden somewhere in the limbic system is an imaginative vat that smells of gun powder, a bubbling recipient in which the intuitive turmoil, the alchemy of my mind condenses.

Met deze kei in mijn hoofd wandel ik in en uit mijn tent, mijn levenstotem.

De plek waar ik woon beschermt mij tegen schaamte en schijn. In dit labyrint herbron ik mij en kniel ik neer voor authenticiteit. Het leven stapt er vrij binnen en buiten.

Voor raadsel en verwondering staan alle deuren en ramen open. Mijn huis is als een seizoen, huiverend voor alles wat definitief is. De tatoeages van geboorte, leven en dood tooien de muren als voedzame herinneringen voor vandaag en morgen.

Mijn huis, ik verblijf er even, op weg naar de geprezen illusie : ‘het eiland der gelukzaligen’.

With this rock in my head I walk in and out of my tent, my life totem. e place where I live protects me against shame and pretence. In this labyrinth I become reinvigorated and I kneel before authenticity. Life walks in and out freely there.

All doors and windows are open to mystery and wonder.

My house is like a season, quivering before all that is definite. e tattoos of birth, life and death embellish the walls like nourishing memories for today and tomorrow.
