Annual

Report 2013

Letter From The President As I’m sure all of you who are close to Saint Stanislaus know, I’m a relative newcomer to SSC, having been assigned here as the successor to Brother Bernard Couvillion, the person who served as our president from 2010 through 2013. Brother Bernard did a truly outstanding job in that role, and I am grateful to him for all that he did for SSC during his presidential tenure, as well as for what he did to prepare me to assume the same role that he so ably filled. I call myself a “newcomer” because, in my 48 years as a brother, this is the first time that our province has asked that I serve here at Stanislaus. And, what a blessing for me this assignment has been thus far! In the past year and a half, I’ve begun learning first-hand about the rich tradition of Saint Stanislaus College. From its very humble beginnings in 1854, our school has matured over its 160 year history into a place sacred to the Brothers and to the lay men and women who have served here, as well as to the thousands of men who have walked its halls and who today proudly call themselves SSC alums. Throughout all of those 160 years, though, one very important aspect of SSC has never changed: we have always seen to it that any boy who wanted to be a Rock-a-chaw would have that opportunity, regardless of his financial status in life. One of the most precious gifts any of us can receive in life is the gift of a Catholic education, especially one obtained through the ministry of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and their lay partners. Once a young man completes his SSC education, it’s something that can never be taken from him. It’s part of him for the rest of his life. The formation that a student receives from us, a formation that helps him develop from an immature boy into a self-confident young man ready to meet the world is, to use the tag-line of a familiar television commercial, “priceless.” The “forming” and the “informing” that an SSC student acquires in his years here are more “priceless” than ever in today’s society. My four decades of work in secondary education have taught me that the educational mission of a place like Saint Stanislaus is more critical today than it has been at any other point in our school’s history. And, it’s for that reason that we make this annual appeal to you – to help us perpetuate that mission for today’s young men. In the early 1960s, when I myself was a student in a Brothers’ school in Alexandria, Louisiana, tuition was a modest $15 per month, but only because nearly all of my teachers were Brothers who, as I came to learn later, were working for slightly more than $2,000 annually. But today we aren’t able to make SSC’s tuition come anywhere near $15 a month and still pay a just wage to our faculty and staff, or provide the kind of 21st century education that our young men need and deserve. One word that we don’t ever want attached to Stanislaus is the word “elitist.” In the truest sense of the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, SSC has to remain a school that is open to all comers, regardless of where they’re coming from or what their socioeconomic status in life is. We want to provide an educational sanctuary that will help a boy mature into a young man ready to meet the academic challenges of college and further prepared to meet and clear the hurdles that life itself will present to him. So, I ask that you join with us and make a donation to this year’s Annual Appeal. Last year we set a goal of $275,000, and through the wonderful generosity of hundreds of you, we didn’t just meet the goal but exceeded it. This year our goal is again $275,000. I have every reason to believe that this goal is again well within our reach, especially considering the selfless gift-giving that we experienced from our donors in last year’s appeal. Father André Coindre, the founder of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, lived by the motto, “Courage and Confidence,” and it is a spirit that he has passed on to us, his Brothers. I have every confidence that the goal we’ve set for this appeal will be met, and that SSC will continue to courageously meet the daunting task of preparing young men for leadership in today’s world. I thank you in advance for your generosity to us so that our mission might continue. Sincerely,

Brother Francis David, S.C. President

Letter From The Principal In 1929, Saint Stanislaus students declared that they would henceforth be known as “The School of Character – The above is our accepted motto, and we do our utmost to uphold it while we are at school and hope to practice it when our campus days are but memories. Each and every individual who has ever attended Stanislaus is well aware of the meaning.” That statement is as true today as it was 85 years ago, just as the same charism that sent Brothers of the Sacred Heart to the Bay 160 years ago remains the foundation of our efforts at forming young men currently. As I begin my tenth year at SSC, I continue to be struck by how relevant the virtues extolled at this school in the previous two centuries are to the development and success of our boys today. A place like SSC, a sanctuary that both seeks to protect its boys from the negative influences of the world while preparing them for the battle outside its walls, is evermore necessary in our social, economic and spiritual climate. Our mission stands in stark contrast with the expectations of our culture: to be willing to do the right thing, in spite of public pressure; to stick with a task through to completion no matter the obstacle; to show compassion and restraint, even in positions of authority and power; in short, to be a man of character and integrity. Beyond the practical knowledge that we offer our boys, these are the qualities that are in demand. Our aim then is not simply to field great athletics programs or to produce elite academics, but rather to use those as avenues for our boys to discover and develop their God-given gifts and practice the character traits required to be great at them. In doing so, our young men come to learn of God’s grace at work in their lives as they maximize their talents and, finally, turn from fulfilling themselves to men of service. Part of an educator’s challenge right now is the cultural apathy that has claimed the futures of so many promising young men who stall out soon after high school. They know neither where they want to go nor how to get there even if they did. And so, rather than rising to a challenge to better themselves, they wallow in no-man’s land, waiting for opportunity to strike them. As a consequence, many in our society have written the next generation off, hoping perhaps that the next batch of boys will do better. At Saint Stanislaus, we remember the Gospel and its resounding message of Hope. We echo through the ages what our boys said in 1929 – boys who, by the way, were on the very precipice of the Great Depression, and yet, through their tenacity and hard work, saw us through that dark time and into prosperity. They passionately advocate for our “‘never say die’ spirit [which] actuates all activities at school be they in the classroom, on the campus or upon the athletic field. That spirit prevails all about our institution; you breathe it, you live it – it is ‘the stuff ’ which has made Stanislaus what it is today.” What our school brings, as it does at every place that holds fast to the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, is a forceful rejection of the pessimism that says our boys cannot and will not succeed. In every facet of their experience at SSC, our young men are formed to see themselves not just as men of the world, but men with eternal destinies, who are called to lead and called to serve. These rare men, a number of whom have returned to Saint Stanislaus to lead and serve, are the shining cities on a hill, who argue, without saying a word, that America and our world still need men of character. Our mission is nothing less than standing against the tide and holding fast to the values of our God and our country; and in doing so, offering hope to all. I pray that you see this idea emerge in this report, but also when you visit our beautiful campus or peruse our new website and find us on social media. We look forward to hearing from you and your stories of character and resiliency! Ametur Cor Jesu!

Patrick McGrath Principal

SSC had a budget shortfall in the 2013 fiscal year due mainly to a trend of declining enrollment. Fifty-six seniors graduated in May of 2014. Recruiting continues to be a major priority. A second admissions team member was brought on to focus on recruiting day students from local public and private feeder schools. We have seen large success with this. Resident student recruitment for both domestic and international remains a major focus moving forward. Major campus upgrades and renovations began to take place in the 2013-2014 school year. Most notably was the first floor renovation to the main school building, which was completely washed through in Katrina. Construction was completed in August of 2014 and essentially doubled the size of the schools usable space. Even in the best years, tuition does not cover all expenses. The “gap” that income did not cover for the 2013 fiscal year was covered by an operational grant of $587,710.72 from the SSC Progression Corporation’s General Endowment. Fundraising has been critical in defraying the total cost of education as well as ancillary expenses incurred through running a school.

The 2013 fiscal year was a positive year for fundraising at SSC. The Annual Fund exceeded its goal once again of $275,000 by raising $286,578.81. Donations to the marine science program, computers for the technology lab, new classroom multimedia equipment and a Class of 1964 gift for new baseball bleachers were a few of the largest designated gifts received during the 2013 fiscal year. Additionally, a $50,000 donation to continue growing the already established Marine Science Endowment brought the endowment’s total to $250,000. Revenue from twenty-three endowed scholarships contributed $197,77.62 for needs-based financial assistance. Investment performance had one of the best years in history with a total return of $1,208,740.27 for both unrestricted endowment funds as well as restricted scholarship and departmental endowments. A capital campaign for the renovation of the school library was started with a goal of $900,000. This campaign began with a lead gift of $500,000 in the form of a four year pledge. The current Samuel “Chip” Blanchard ‘72 computer laboratory and the Kleinpeter-Gibbens Memorial Library will be joined together to form the Taylor Media Center which will open facing the Resource Center.

Society of 1854 St. Stanislaus College, the oldest existing establishment of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in America, boasts a long and colorful history dating back to 1854. Blessed with talented leaders and generous benefactors, St. Stanislaus grew from its humble beginnings into an educational institution of great renown on the Gulf Coast. But it was not an easy task. Major challenges overcome by Brothers, lay faculty, and their students include epidemics, Civil War, financial struggles, hurricanes, and fire. Without the perseverance and dedication of instrumental individuals, St. Stanislaus would not be the school it is today. From its start in 1854, the history of SSC spans over a century and a half and includes over 7,000 alumni worldwide. Membership in the Society of 1854 is offered to all those who share the commitment to continuing the mission of St. Stanislaus, and who, like those Brothers in 1854 and those who followed, affirm that commitment by means of a planned gift. To become eligible for the Society membership, an individual simply informs the school in writing that St. Stanislaus has been included in his or her estate plans. The school also requires documentation of the planned gift, for example, a copy of the pertinent provisions of the individual’s will or trust, a copy of the life insurance policy which names the school as a beneficiary, or a letter from the individual’s attorney stating that he or she has, indeed, included St. Stanislaus in his or her estate plans. Upon receipt of such documentation, participants are enrolled in the Society of 1854. Below are the members of The Society of 1854 whom we are proud to recognize for their generosity in making a planned gift to SSC.

Great Wall of Rocks

works to Saint Stanislaus in order to beautify the campus and so that the arts program at SSC may be sustained.

The St. Stanislaus Cafe was the setting for the inaugural Great Wall of Rocks for the Arts on Friday, March 14, 2013. Mr. Patrick Martinez, SSC class of 1999 and Alumni Association President, shared the purpose of the Alumni Association sponsored event. It is to recognize, honor and celebrate those individuals or groups who, through their personal accomplishments in the field of art and music and their dedication to the Mission of Saint Stanislaus, serve as role models and sources of inspiration for the young men of SSC.

Mr. Gerald Bienvenu with classmates

We congratulate these two talented artists on this tremendous achievement and are grateful for the profound impact their talents have made on the Saint Stanislaus community.

Brother Carl Bouchereau, S.C., former teacher at Saint Stanislaus and current Guidance Counselor at Brother Martin High in New Orleans, introduced Brother Hilbert Mooney, S.C. the first inductee into the Great Wall of Rocks for the Arts. Brother Hilbert spent 48 years of religious life as a Brother of the Sacred Heart, the last 19 of which were spent at Saint Stanislaus. Brother Hilbert taught art to the students at SSC and offered pottery lessons to adults in the Gulf Coast Community. The Saint Stanislaus Art Room is named in honor of Brother Hilbert. A talented potter, Brother Hilbert took just pride in his creative works, which earned him a coast-wide reputation as a gifted artist. Brother Hilbert was inducted posthumously into the Great Wall, so Brother Francis David, S.C., current President of Saint Stanislaus, accepted the honor on behalf of Brother Hilbert.

Mr. Chris Mensi, SSC class of 2001 and Advancement Director at Saint Stanislaus, introduced Mr. Gerald Bienvenu, the second inductee and a 1955 SSC graduate. Mr. Bienvenu grew up and spent most of his life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He is a self-taught artist whose goal has always been to help students quickly become proficient in their art. Mr. Bienvenu’s style and competence in the difficult medium of watercolor has earned him national acclaim. He donated his life’s

College Readiness As you may know, a successful college application rests on three main components: •

a strong academic foundation (solid grade point average in challenging classes)

impressive leadership and involvement in extra-curricular activities (clubs, athletics and service)

high standardized test scores (in our case, mostly through the ACT).

Saint Stanislaus challenges each of its young men to achieve his best academically through rigorous coursework and offers 30 clubs or sports for him to participate in, providing plenty of opportunities for growth and content for college applications. In the third component, Saint Stanislaus continues to far outpace state and national scores, and we have increased results dramatically in the last decade. We believe, however, that more can be done. Saint Stanislaus has long benefited from not being required to administer state standardized tests, which can lead to issues of “teaching to the test” and we intend to maintain that approach. We can do this and still meet our goals because the ACT test questions are directly related to what students are learning in

English, reading, math and science. As a result, our efforts are very efficient: we are providing students with the content that they will need for college while also enabling them to acquire the skills they need to succeed on the ACT. We believe that more of our students have the potential to gain college scholarships with additional targeted effort. That’s why we’re announcing the launch of a new effort which will engage our students in a three-part initiative to accomplish our goal of improving college readiness skills and raising ACT scores even more: •

We have purchased and will administer two retired ACT tests (one on September 9th and another early in the second semester) to this year’s juniors in order to give them maximum exposure to these high stakes tests.

Through a new partnership with Cambridge Educational Services (CES), we will use data that CES returns to us within a week of testing to engage in professional development for all of our teachers. They will learn how to implement lessons that specifically respond to the needs of our students based on analysis of the test data.

Two of the main tools we will use to implement this program are Victory for the ACT Student Text, 12th Edition and Essential Skills for the ACT Student Text, 12th Edition. Each junior will have the option of purchasing a set of these texts for use in the classroom and at home.

t. Stanislaus is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that relies on private donations to meet the annual, capital and endowment needs of the school. At a time when there are so many requests for your charitable dollar, you may ask: Why St. Stanislaus? The answer is simply two-fold: St. Stanislaus is worthy of your investment because it is an investment in the formation and future of a child. Secondly, in a school with our unique mission, your gift to St. Stanislaus will truly make a difference. ANNUAL FUND Our Annual Fund Program is necessary to sustain the life of the school through enriched academic, campus ministry, and student programs, as well as to provide faculty and departmental support. Your investment on an annual basis through a St. Stanislaus Annual Fund contribution, at any level, will help raise necessary funds for important school objectives.

Recruit and retain outstanding, experienced faculty Improve the academic programs and student activities Increase professional development of faculty Provide financial assistance for students Enhance spiritual formation opportunities for students Improve technology on campus

ENDOWMENT FUNDS Endowed scholarship funds and endowed academic funds are often established to commemorate a deceased loved one or to honor a living person or family. These funds provide a lasting tribute to those who are so honored. DESIGNATED GIFTS Contributions can be restricted for a specific purpose and applied to benefit a named department, extracurricular activity, or project as the donor specifies and the school approves. CLASS GIFTS This is an opportunity for graduates of the same class to come together to create an endowed scholarship or other designated gift in the name of their class. MATCHING GIFTS Many companies offer an employee benefit of matching contributions to a non-profit organization. To find out if your company matches gifts, contact your human resource department for the required form(s). If you are interested in learning more about giving opportunities at St. Stanislaus College, please contact Chris Mensi in the Advancement Office at 228-467-9057, ext. 255. Your gift sends a powerful message of loyalty and support and helps shape the future of St. Stanislaus College.
