Letter from the
President
T
his yearly letter that I write for the Annual Report provides me with a great opportunity to reflect on where Saint Stanislaus is currently and where we’ve been in the recent past. I say it’s a “great opportunity” because invariably penning this letter turns out to be an overwhelmingly positive experience in writing about our beloved school and its continued long and wonderful history. At the very least, the 2014-2015 school year was another terrific year in the life of Saint Stanislaus, and there’s much that lies below the surface of that simple characterization. From its beginning to its end, the 20142015 school year was a tale of on-going successes, one seemingly right after another. Consider the following:
Brother Francis David, S.C. President
Construction
▶▶
The beginning of the 2014-2015 school year saw the end of the year-long reconstruction of the first floor of the Main School Building which had been heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The newly renovated first floor contains modern, attractive office space for admissions, finance, and advancement personnel; classroom and lab space for Marine Science; a rec hall for resident students; additional classroom space for a variety of subjects; an office for Camp Stanislaus; a beautifully appointed prayer chapel that provides a quiet, reflective oasis for faculty, staff, and students to meet the Lord in prayer at any time of the day; and a spacious, airy, and well-lit Student Mall that offers a wonderful area for our boys to relax in at those times when they are not in class.
▶▶
While the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year saw construction work on the Main School Building coming to an end, the renovation of Aurelian Hall, our dormitory facility, was just starting. Katrina had flooded the first floor of that structure, so with financial assistance from FEMA and our insurers, the entire first floor was refurbished and put back into service in relatively short order after the storm. The second and third floors, however, got little if any attention since they had sustained comparatively minor damage from Katrina’s ravages. Those two floors became the focus of the renovation work in 2014-2015 with every room on those two floors, student and prefect rooms alike, being stripped down to their bare concrete floors and block walls. All bathroom fixtures – showers, sinks, and toilets – were removed and replaced. All beds, desks, and closets were discarded or donated to charity, and all new furniture was put in place in each dorm room. Additionally, the HVAC system on all three floors was totally upgraded, and now each room has its own AC and heating unit. Finally, and perhaps most notably, a handicapped-accessible elevator was added that services all three floors of the dorm. The conclusion of this work in June 2015 gave Aurelian Hall its first complete makeover in its 50 years of existence, and now our boarders enjoy what is, for all practical purposes, a sparkling new dormitory.
Academics 2014-2015 was another great year for our students in the classroom. Near the beginning of the year, members of our 7th grade class showed their academic prowess by qualifying 40% of their class for the Duke TIP program. Twenty SSC 7th graders were recognized based on their standardized test scores as eligible for this prestigious talent search. At the senior end of our student body, especially noteworthy was the performance of an outstanding group of young men who made up the Class of 2015. Fifty-seven graduates were in the class and together they garnered $10.3 million in scholarship money to colleges and universities across the United States, as well as in Mexico and Canada. Together those fifty-seven graduates set an ACT benchmark of 24.5, a challenging goal which future classes will have to work hard to match or exceed. 6
Letter from the President
While writing about ACT scores, I must include a few lines about a member of last year’s junior class, Mitchell Walk, who achieved a top composite score of 36 on the ACT which he took in February, 2015. Nationally, less than one-tenth of one percent of students who take the ACT earns the top score of 36. Among test takers in the high school graduating class of 2014 for example, only 1,407 of nearly 1.85 million students earned a composite score of 36.
Athletics To say that we had a successful year in athletics is an understatement, with four state championships earned in 2014-2015.
▶▶ Football
The Rocks finished the year 13-2, losing only a single regular season contest in overtime to Poplarville and then marching all the way to Mississippi State’s campus for the Class 4A championship game against Noxubee County where the Rocks ultimately dropped a hard-fought contest 48-27.
▶▶ Cross Country
The cross country team brought home the State Championship, the program’s third in school history and the second in a three-year span. Sophomore Royce Garcia was the individual state champion in the three-mile contest.
▶▶ Soccer
The SSC soccer team had another extremely successful campaign, bringing home a second consecutive Class 4A state championship and the Rocks’ seventh overall after winning previous titles in 1996, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2010, and 2014. The team finished the 2014-2015 campaign with a 19-6-1 record and captured the state championship trophy with a 6-2 victory over the Kosciusko Whippets.
▶▶ Golf
At the very least, the “2014-2015 school year
was another terrific year in the life of Saint Stanislaus, and there’s much that lies below the surface of that simple characterization. From its beginning to its end, the 2014-2015 school year was a tale of ongoing successes, one seemingly right after another.
”
For the second straight year, a very young SSC golf team took home the MHSAA Class 4A State Championship trophy. Our golfing Rocks overcame a 4-shot deficit going into the final round of the tournament and ultimately dominated the field and bested the second-place team Caledonia by 17 strokes, an amazing 21-stroke turnaround.
▶▶ Baseball
The baseball Rocks seemed to be a team of destiny in 2014-2015 and captured its second Class 4A state championship since 2010 with a thrilling sweep of Houston. Our boys kept their fans on the edge of their seats in the second game of the three-game series, finally clinching the title with a spectacular and beautifully executed final out as right-fielder Adam Guillot hit his relay man, second baseman Noah Nicaud, who fired a strike to third baseman Patrick McRaney for the tag-out to end the game. The play was a fitting end to a baseball season that was truly a special one in the history of our school. 2014-2015 was surely another proud moment in our 161-year history, and it was made possible through much hard work on the part of our faculty, staff, students, administrators, and parents. It’s also true that successful years like this one are also made possible because of the generosity of countless benefactors who continue to support our efforts to form young men to be the people that God created them to be. On behalf of all of us at Saint Stanislaus, I offer a heartfelt thank you to all of you who through your donations to SSC helped to make a year like 2014-2015 possible. We are eternally grateful for your ongoing generosity. Gratefully,
Brother Francis David, S.C. President Letter from the President

Blessings of Generosity Gifts of all shapes and sizes are a true blessing to Saint Stanislaus, which relies on the support of its donors to grow and improve. Now in our 162nd year, SSC has been blessed with countless acts of generosity for the betterment of the school and our boys. One recent gift in particular has helped reshape our campus in a positive way. Dean and Marilene Taylor generously chose to pledge $500,000, over five years, to renovate the small and dated library which was constructed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The project joined the former Kleinpeter-Gibbens Memorial Library and the current Samuel L. Blanchard ’72 Technology Lab to create a combined useable space now called the Taylor Media Center, which will also house the school’s archives. SSC librarian Anna Brannin shared her excitement over the renovations. “Our library stays very busy, between classes doing research, students checking out books, chess games during lunch, and after-school events, there’s always something going on in here. The previous space was small and cozy, but could also get crowded at times. The expansion of the library has made it easier to accommodate more people and events, and in a beautiful new setting. It’s also exciting to now have a secure place to organize and store our archives.” The first archive display is now in the library just in time for our annual reunion. The renovation began on May 29, 2015 by Dan Hensarling Construction and was completed on schedule by the first day of school on August 10, 2015. Students were greeted on their first day back on campus by a library which was doubled in size and offered inviting space to study, read, and relax. In a conversation with Dean Taylor, Chris Mensi, Director of Advancement, asked how Dean and Marilene came to the decision to make this generous act of charity. What was your motivation and inspiration for wanting to make this gift? “Simply put, some of the best memories of my life come from Saint Stanislaus. From my days at the Back School in the 4th grade, to my departure from the school when we moved to Baton Rouge after my 7th grade year, the 4 years that I spent at Saint Stanislaus (1956-60) formed me for the rest of my life. The friendships that I made there, the time spent engaged in sports, the values of integrity and discipline, as well as the solid educational foundation shaped me into the person that I am. I’ll always be grateful for the efforts of those men and women at Saint Stanislaus who made that happen.” 8
Blessings of Generosity
What was is it about Saint Stanislaus that made you and Marilene chose to make your donation here as opposed to another charity or organization? “We certainly had other good causes to which we could have made a contribution, but my wife, Marilene, and I decided that SSC was the best option for making a significant contribution because we felt like there would be more benefit derived from our gift here than elsewhere. We felt we would be able to see the results first-hand, and that the bang for the buck, so to speak, would be greater at SSC than at other venues to which we could have made a contribution.” This gift was made in memory of your parents, can you speak on the impact they had on your life and how they inspired you? “We both felt that the opportunity to make a donation in memory of my parents was very attractive, in that they both had a great impact on both of us. They exemplified the qualities that we have most admired in our lives: goodwill, courtesy, hard work, integrity, generosity, and faith in our Creator.” What do you see when you look at Saint Stanislaus today? “Looking at the young men we see at SSC today, I see courteous, well-educated, mannered and dressed individuals who have the potential to be real leaders in today’s global economy. They are being prepared for the next step in their formation, their college years, by individuals of integrity, who exemplify the spirit of hard work and dedication necessary to survive and prosper in a world beset by challenges. Though SSC is sited in a small town, I believe that instills small town values of decency, integrity, hard work, courtesy and generosity that best prepares young men for the next steps in their formation, and that they are seeing those values practiced every day at SSC.” Dean and Marilene were involved throughout the entire design and construction process showing not only their dedication to the SSC community, but also their belief in the importance of high quality education. We are truly humbled by their love and appreciation of SSC and its mission. Blessings of Generosity

Ways to
Give Saint Stanislaus is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that relies on private donations to meet the annual, capital and endowment needs of the school. At a time when there are so many requests for your charitable dollar, you may ask: Why Saint Stanislaus? The answer is two-fold: Saint Stanislaus is worthy of your donation because it is an investment in the formation and future of a child. Secondly, in a school with our unique mission, your gift to Saint Stanislaus will truly make a difference. If you are interested in learning more about giving opportunities at Saint Stanislaus College, please contact Chris Mensi in the Advancement Office at 228-467-9057, ext. 255. Your gift sends a powerful message of loyalty and support and helps shape the future of Saint Stanislaus College.
Annual Fund
Our Annual Fund Program is necessary to sustain the life of the school through enriched academic, campus ministry, and student programs, as well as to provide faculty and departmental support. Your investment on an annual basis through a Saint Stanislaus Annual Fund contribution, at any level, will help raise necessary funds for important school objectives.
• Recruit and retain outstanding, experienced faculty
• Improve the academic programs and student activities
• Increase professional development of faculty
• Provide financial assistance for students
• Enhance spiritual formation opportunities for students
• Improve technology on campus
Endowment Fund
Endowed scholarship funds and endowed academic funds are often established to commemorate a deceased loved one or to honor a living person or family. These funds provide a lasting tribute to those who are so honored.
Designated Gifts
Contributions can be restricted for a specific purpose and applied to benefit a named department, extracurricular activity, or project as the donor specifies and the school approves.
Class Gifts
This is an opportunity for graduates of the same class to come together to create an endowed scholarship or other designated gift in the name of their class.
Matching Gifts
Many companies offer an employee benefit of matching contributions to a non-profit organization. To find out if your company matches gifts, contact your human resource department for the required form(s).

► The 2014 – 2015 school year enrolled 344 students and graduated fifty-seven seniors. Our efforts have doubled in student recruitment, however SSC still faces annual deficits due to low resident student enrollment. The 2014 fiscal year incurred a $788,641 operating loss comprised of outstanding FEMA reimbursements on completed projects. Additionally, a $494,061 shortfall was filled by an operation grant from the SSC Progression Corporation General Endowment. ► A traditional feeder for Saint Stanislaus has always been Camp Stanislaus. Due to the hard work of Camp Director, Sam Doescher, Camp Stanislaus has seen enormous growth over the past three years. Camp has expanded to offer a coed experience for young girls, and is now hosting international campers from Latin America and South America. Thanks to Camp’s growth, the rent paid to Saint Stanislaus’s operations has grown to $100,000. ► Increasing student enrollement will continue to be the highest priority to decrease the annual deficit. Currently, thanks to both recent academic and athletic success, our day student enrollment has seen remarkable growth in the incoming 7th grade class.
Reports ► Taking a look at SSC’s facilities, the year was filled with renovations. The Kleinpeter-Gibbens Memorial Library and the Samuel “Chip” Blanchard ’72 computer lab underwent major updating to create the new Taylor Media Center, made possible by a generous $500,000 pledge by Dean and Marilene Taylor. Also, the second and third floors of the dormitory were upgraded. The renovation costs were covered by FEMA and $402,635 was used from Capital Campaign funds to purchase new beds, desks and chairs for the rooms. Also, planning and fundraising has begun for the renovation of three science laboratories in the main school building. This construction will be funded entirely by the support of a private donor and will take place over the course of the next three years. Each summer, one laboratory will be renovated to update the current ones built in 1971. ► Planned estate gifts accounted for two large donations in the 2014-15 fiscal year. Mr. Jim Smith ‘45 and Mr. George Slade ‘49, through selfless foresight and planning, have cemented their legacies at Saint Stanislaus, and their gifts have had a tremendous impact on both the students and the faculty of SSC. Both men are members of the Society of 1854 and will be perpetually recognized for their generosity to Saint Stanislaus.

► The decrease in the price of oil showed a noticeable impact in the FY ‘14-‘15 Annual Fund. Gift sizes from royalty trusts and those employed in oil related fields were lower. Also, gifts designated for Capital Campaigns detracted from the Annual Fund. The total for the FY ‘14-‘15 Annual Fund was $222,896 compared to $286,578 in the year prior. ► Due to the investment returns from fiscal year 2013 and donations designated for financial assistance, the SSC Progression Corp. was able to offer $265,432 in financial aid to students and their families. This is the highest financial aid award the SSC Progression Corp. has ever made. ► The SSC Progression Corp. made an operational grant of $494,061 to offset the school’s operating deficit, a figure that is down from $643,500 in the prior year. Great efforts have been made by the SSC Board of Directors and SSC Administration to decrease the deficit through recruiting efforts and fundraising.

The
Society of
1854
S
aint Stanislaus College, the oldest existing establishment of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in America, boasts a long and colorful history dating back to 1854. Blessed with talented leaders and generous benefactors, Saint Stanislaus grew from its humble beginnings into an educational institution of great renown on the Gulf Coast. But it was not an easy task. The Brothers, lay faculty, and their students overcame major challenges including epidemics, Civil War, financial struggles, hurricanes, and fire. Without the perseverance and dedication of instrumental individuals, Saint Stanislaus would not be the school it is today. From its start in 1854, the history of SSC spans over a century and a half and includes over 7,000 alumni worldwide. Membership in The Society of 1854 is offered to all those who share the commitment to continuing the mission of Saint Stanislaus, and who, like the Brothers in 1854 and those who followed, affirm that commitment by means of a planned gift. To become eligible for the Society membership, an individual simply informs the school in writing that Saint Stanislaus has been included in his or her estate plans. The school also requires documentation of the planned gift, for example, a copy of the pertinent provisions of the individual’s will or trust, a copy of the life insurance policy which names the school as a beneficiary, or a letter from the individual’s attorney stating that he or she has, indeed, included Saint Stanislaus in his or her estate plans. Upon receipt of such documentation, participants are enrolled in the Society of 1854. Listed are the members of The Society of 1854 whom we are proud to recognize for their generosity in making a planned gift to SSC. 20

Moving Past Katrina
The past ten years have been plagued with the constant nagging of Hurricane Katrina’s memory. A first floor boarded up with plywood, constant meetings and endless paperwork with FEMA, and renovations that were simply unable to begin due to code restrictions and finances served as a reminder of the storms impact on SSC. A decade later, Saint Stanislaus has finally moved into a new era. The 2014-2015 school year was filled with renovations all across campus. Finishing touches were placed on the 1st floor renovation which began in 2013. Now students have a mall area once again to gather, “rec rooms to enjoy, and classrooms featuring a new marine science laboratory. The business offices are once again located at the front of the main building, which is a welcoming sight to visitors as opposed to the plywood boards that stood for years boarding up the building.
The dormitory was also a major spot of activity throughout the year. The second and third floors, which had not been renovated since 1966 when they were constructed, saw a complete upgrade. Along with renovations to every room, the main atrium received a new elevator to bring the building up to code. Also, the exterior stairwells received new hand railing, laundry rooms were installed on each floor, and thanks to the support of donors who contributed to the dorm’s capital campaign in 2007, over $400,000 was used to purchase new furniture. Each room received new closets, beds, desks, and chairs which were custom made by Halpern’s Furnishings in New Orleans.

COLLEGE READINESS
A successful college application rests on three main components:
1| 2| 3|
a strong academic foundation (solid grade point average in challenging classes) impressive leadership and involvement in extra-curricular activities (clubs, athletics and service)
►
50 students were offered scholarships amounting to $10,487,406.00
high standardized test scores (in our case, mostly through the ACT)
►
89% of the class were offered
Saint Stanislaus challenges each of our students to achieve his best academically through rigorous coursework. We also offer 30 clubs or sports for students to participate in, providing plenty of opportunities for growth as well as bolstering college applications. Saint Stanislaus continues to far outpace state and national scores, and we have increased results dramatically in the last decade. Saint Stanislaus has long benefited from not being required to administer state standardized tests, which can lead to issues of “teaching to the test,” and we intend to maintain that approach. We can do this and still meet our goals because the ACT tests what students need to know in English, reading, math, and science. As a result, our efforts are already efficient: we are providing students with the content and skills they need to do well on the ACT and, more importantly, to be successful in college and beyond. College readiness is a major factor in preparing our boys for the next step in life. However, that takes form in many different ways at SSC. Through the guidance department led by Mr. Jeremy Clark and Bro. Dwight Kenney, our young men develop in a variety of ways designed to engage their personal growth and character formation. Rock Workshops are once a week seminars that the entire

school participates in between 1st and 2nd period. Students report to an assigned group where teachers give presentations on topics such as intrapersonal communication, social etiquette, the history of SSC, the importance of honesty and integrity, and much, much more. These are out of the box group discussions where students can share and learn with teachers on numerous life experiences they will eventually face. Another effort to form our young men is Milestone Meetings, which are individual meetings with every sophomore and his parents to discuss where he is in his overall high school progress. A school administrator or staff member meets with the student and family in
order to gauge their experience at SSC thus far and to set goals and a game plan for the young man’s remaining time at Saint Stanislaus. Finally, Mr. Clark, with the help of our librarian, Ms. Anna Brannin, has teamed up to create three separate college information nights for sophomore, junior, and senior parents and students. These seminars are specifically geared for each grade level, and they are designed to help parents and their boys navigate the college selection, application, and admission process. Through these and other assemblies throughout the school year, students are prepared for more than just college, they are prepared for life and leave Saint Stanislaus as Men of Character.
