The CATHEDRAL TIMES The weekly newsletter of the Cathedral of St. Philip · Serving Atlanta and the World · February 25, 2024

THE CATHEDRAL OF ST. PHILIP WELCOMES THE VERY REVEREND ROBERT WILLIS The Cathedral of St. Philip extends a warm welcome to the Very Rev. Robert Willis, Dean Emeritus of Canterbury Cathedral, this Sunday, February 25. He will preach at the 8:45 and 11:15 a.m. services, as well as lead the Dean's Forum in Child Hall during the 10:10 a.m. education hour. Dean Willis is known for being a theologian, hymn writer, and pastor. He served as Dean of Canterbury, running the mother church of the Anglican Communion and the King’s School, Canterbury (the world’s oldest school, founded by St. Augustine in 597) and advising three archbishops, from 2001 to 2022 following nine years as Dean of Hereford and five years as Vicar of Sherborne Abbey. A leading member of the General Synod for over thirty years and with oversight of the Deans’ council of England for two decades, he has also worked on numerous regional, national and international boards – including here in the US – of charities and associations ranging from the arts and music to homelessness and healthcare. He is most recently well known for the broadcasts of Morning Prayer that he and his civil-partner of 22 years, Fletcher Banner, made every day for 26 months from the Deanery Garden in Canterbury during the COVID-19 pandemic which attracted, and still attracts, millions of views from all over the world of people of all faiths and none, helping people through those dark years and bringing many back to faith. He has received doctorates from various universities, including Yale, and the rare Freedom of the City of Canterbury in recognition for his work, the Cross of St. Augustine from Archbishop Rowan Williams, and the gift of a relic from Pope Francis in recognition and thanks for his work in ecumenism and reconciliation. In January of 2023 he was named Dean Emeritus of Canterbury by Archbishop Justin Welby and since then both he and Fletcher have been working as ambassadors for the church and various charities all over the world. Welcome, the Very Rev. Robert Willis!

CHOOSE FROM ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS: Book Study with the Rev. Canon Julia Mitchener

The Myth of the American Dream: Reflections on Affluence, Autonomy, Safety, and Power by D. L. Mayfield Cathedral Bookstore Drawing on stories of her family’s life among refugees in Portland, evangelical Christian writer Mayfield invites readers to consider whether the core values of the American Dream are congruent with Jesus’ command to love our neighbors as ourselves. Says the author, “This is a book about paying attention. It’s about being fully alive . . . to the systems and structures and policies that dull our imaginations for a world that truly has hope and good news and beauty for everyone.”

The Nurtured Heart Approach with Mary Hunter Maxwell

Conference Room 239 The Nurtured Heart Approach is a relationship centered way of life that is built upon three stands: Absolutely No!, Absolutely Yes!, and Absolutely Clear! Join Mary Hunter Maxwell in an exploration of the Nurtured Heart Approach on Wednesday nights this Lent. Originally developed to support the parents and caregivers of the most challenging, intense children, NHA has blossomed into a powerful tool that empowers parents, teachers, grandparents, and other caregivers to recognize and celebrate greatness – or what we might call the image of God – in all children (and each other!). We will meet in Room 239 from 6-7 p.m. on February 21, February 28, March 13, and March 20. RSVP at cathedralATL.org/nurturedheart if you plan to attend – this will help ensure there are adequate materials and seating for everyone but last-minute additions are always welcome.

The Chosen Watch Party

Gould Room *Please note this program begins at 5 p.m. The Chosen! The Cathedral’s popular and deeply inspiring video discussion will continue in the Gould Room at 5 p.m., with a meal break at 5:30 for attendees who register for a Lenten dinner in the parish hall (Child Hall) next door. For Lent we will continue to view and reflect on this awesome series of scripture-based stories about Jesus and his first disciples that’s energizing viewers worldwide. Independently you may also watch the entire series or individual episodes at watch.thechosen.tv, download The Chosen app, or search the internet for many reviews and interviews that highlight one of the greatest breakthroughs in Christian media this century. To learn more, or to be added to The Chosen mailing list, contact The Rev. Dr. Thee Smith at tsmith@cathedralATL.org or 404-931-5062.

“Encountering the Holy Spirit in Everyday Life" Workshop with Lindsey Hardegree Walthour Library

During game night with your friends? Join us for a five-week workshop to discern the ways the Holy Spirit is moving in your life and how your ordinary, everyday activities further God's mission.

Robert Willis, Dean Emeritus of Canterbury Cathedral, England, for this special Dean's Forum in Child Hall. Join us! Living Faith 10:10 a.m., Room 239 Our topic through Lent is “What makes for a meaningful life?” Drawing on the book Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters by three scholars from the Yale Institute for Faith and Culture, we’ll reflect on some core questions of human existence within the context of our Christian calling and hope. All are welcome! Young Professionals Say it to God: In Search of Prayer (The Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent Book 2018) by Luigi Gioia 10:10 a.m., Room 368 In Say it to God, Luigi Gioia provides a welcome encouragement to all those who feel the need to freshen their practice of prayer. For Gioia, prayer is not about methods or techniques, but trusting that God is truly interested in everything that happens to us and wants to hear about it. This book leads the reader into the theological aspects of prayer and how it relates to Christ, to the Holy Spirit and to the Church. Enjoy Biblical Greek! 1:15 p.m., Room 239 and on Zoom Provided on a drop-in basis, first-time visitors need no previous knowledge of Greek. Please contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, tsmith@cathedralATL.org, for more information.

WOMEN’S LENTEN RETREAT: LIVING IN THE LIMINAL March 15-17, 2024 St. Mary’s Sewanee Liminal spaces describe times of transition—the threshold between what was and what will be. Our Women’s Lenten Retreat will explore the liminal spaces we inhabit (adding or losing a family member, starting or ending a career, moving to a new home or new town) and how Jesus meets us there. Whatever in-between space you find yourself in, come share it with the community, creativity, and quiet of the Women’s Lenten Retreat! All Cathedral women are invited to our annual Women’s Lenten Retreat at the beautiful St. Mary’s Sewanee retreat center in Tennessee. The retreat will be led by Canon Lauren Holder. The cost is $320 for a single occupancy and $260 for a double occupancy (price includes meals from dinner on Friday through breakfast on Sunday). STEWARDSHIP FEBRUARY STEWARDSHIP UPDATE Pledges through February 19, 2024 Amount: $2,509,373 Number of households: 495 Thank you, as always, for your responsiveness to the 2024 Stewardship Campaign! The parish has added 31 pledges totaling more than $125,000 so far for the first couple of weeks of February. We are almost $220,000 over our total amount pledged at this time last year. We will need to maintain this momentum to reach our Wildly Important Goal of $4,200,000 in pledges from 1,000 pledging families for the year. This year’s Stewardship Chairs are: Joan Gilbert, Bob Gilbert, Trish Lewis, Katie Rosengren, and Brent Rosengren. They have jumped in with enthusiasm to reach our goal! To stay on track (increasing rate and amount of pledging), we will need support from as many households as possible. Join the fun! Please make your pledge today at cathedralATL.org/pledge. Thank you!
