THIS IS MY SONG

by the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral This is my song, Oh God of all the nations, A song of peace for lands afar and mine. This is my home, the country where my heart is; Here are my hopes, my dreams, my sacred shrine. But other hearts in other lands are beating, With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine. My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean, And sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine. But other lands have sunlight too and clover, And skies are everywhere as blue as mine. Oh hear my song, oh God of all the nations, A song of peace for their land and for mine.

This month, my favorite song is Lloyd Stone’s simple poetry, in the song above. He wrote the verses in 1934, between the two world wars, and meant them to be sung to the tune “Finlandia,” by Jean Sibelius. (Read the words again, and try to hum them!) The hymn is not printed in every hymnal; but it is in The New Century Hymnal at #591. There, the editors note that the hymn can be associated with Psalm 82:8, “Arise, O God, and rule the earth, For you shall take all nations for your own.” What if we could all sing with such double intention: pride and thanks for our own country combined with appreciation and honor that “other hearts in other lands are beating with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine?” The poet here sings of a harmonic tension that rings through modern civilizations: the tension between the local and the global. All of us have local attachments. They are where we learn and love. We honor the sacred shrines there. But each of us, one day, begins to realize that we need global and worldwide relationships, too. God, and God’s world, is always larger than we thought! Most community traditions carry this tension easily. Consider the birth of a child, for instance. “Our new baby is the most beautiful child in the world,” we exclaim. We know that the statement is both true and misleading, at the same time. It is certainly true for our local family (until the next baby arrives), but we have no intention of conducting a global contest for most beautiful child. The tension between local and global also exists in the best religious traditions. For instance, the phrase “God’s chosen people” is used in both Jewish and Christian communities; and the doctrine of “election” suggests that God chooses people. Lloyd Stone’s poetry acknowledges that God does choose people and lands; but that choice is not exclusive! God can choose two people at the same time. Because God has chosen one people does not mean that God rejects another people! Because God has chosen you, does not mean necessarily that God has rejected me. This tension between local and global will always exist in the healthiest religious traditions. It is the source of occasional disharmony; local and global threaten to separate from one another. But I believe this tension can be resolved, like the harmony in any great song resolves itself. Sometimes, two notes sounding together in a song strikes us as discordant; but, later, what sounds unusual is exactly what gives our song its identity. “Lift every voice and sing,” wrote James Weldon Johnson; and his song, too, has also become one of the great hymns of our time. May each of our great religious traditions, around the world, lift their particular voices. It is not disharmony. God, the great conductor, can draw out the best melodies from every tribe and nation. God can blend them together in a harmony of peace and truth. I hope we can join God in this endeavor.

Cathedral FARMERS MARKET

The main goal for the Cathedral Farmers Market online auction is to continue purchasing fresh fruits and veggies from local, market farmers to donate to the food pantry at Intown Cares. This season, from March through September, the market has spent over $22,550 and purchased 7,800 pounds of fresh produce to donate to our neighbors in need. Please consider buying raffle tickets, or bidding on items to support this ministry.

Adult EDUCATION ADULT EDUCATION THIS SUNDAY Old Fashioned Sunday School 10:10 a.m, Child Hall In May of this year, Dr. Vivek Murthy, the United States Surgeon General, issued an advisory calling attention to the public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection in our country. The Rev. Samuel Wells has argued that the first step we might take in dealing with this predicament is to change the way we think about God from one who works for us to one who wants to be with us. Canon George Maxwell leads a discussion that looks more deeply at Murthy’s diagnosis and the healing remedy that Wells prescribes. All are welcome. Living Faith 10:10 a.m., Room 239 Our topic this week is “What makes for a meaningful life?” Drawing on the book Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters by three scholars from the Yale Institute for Faith and Culture, we will reflect on some core questions of human existence within the context of our Christian calling and hope. All are welcome!

Adult Confirmation Class 10:10 a.m., Room 319 (Chapter Room) Our Adult Confirmation classes run through November 26, preparing for a Diocesan Confirmation service in December. Contact Canon Lauren Holder, lholder@cathedralATL.org, with questions. Young Professionals: Seeking God in Our Daily Lives 10:10 a.m., Room 368 Each Sunday, our Young Professionals group gathers for our formation offering: “Seeking God in Our Daily Lives.” During our time together, we explore the story of our Christian faith and how we participate in that larger story. Enjoy Biblical Greek! 1:15 p.m., Room 239 and on Zoom Provided on a drop-in basis, first-time visitors need no previous knowledge of Greek. Please contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, tsmith@cathedralATL.org, for more information.

SPIRITUALITY ADVENT QUIET DAY How Can It Be? Entering the Mystery of the Incarnation An Advent Quiet Day Saturday, December 2, 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. An angel appears to Mary and reports that she will give birth to the Son of God. Before she can make her transformative declaration, “Let it be me,” Mary first asks, “How can it be?” Zechariah, the shepherds, and others in Scripture offer similar questions when confronted by the mystery of God. How can it be? How can it be that the God of the universe chose to become human? How can it be that this baby is God Made Flesh, God With Us, the Messiah? It’s such an honest, human question. We try so hard to understand God with our rational minds. Yet God is Mystery; it’s not possible to comprehend God and God’s ways. The invitation, then, is first to allow compassionate space for our questions and doubts. Then we can let our minds rest and enter into Mystery; we can follow the example of Mary and others and let go, trust, and open ourselves to a Love that is beyond anything we could ever hope for or imagine. Join us for our annual Advent Quiet Day as we sit with the mystery of God’s incarnation. Using a variety of spiritual practices, we’ll hold space for our questions and doubts, sit with the mystery of God, and prepare to receive the marvelous, unfathomable gift of God’s Son this Christmas. The day will be led by Kristen E. Vincent, an author, spiritual director, and retreat leader who holds a Master of Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School and is a graduate of the Academy for Spiritual Formation. The Quiet Day will take place in the Lanier House on the Cathedral campus, 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, December 2. The cost is $20 and includes lunch. Please register at cathedralATL.org/quietday before November 29. For more information contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL.org or 404-365-1031.

OUTREACH HABITAT CHRISTMAS BASKETS The Habitat Christmas delivery committee will again be creating boxes of goodies for 27 of the families for whom the Cathedral has helped build homes. As in the past, we are hoping to gather tins of cookies, loaves of bread, nuts, and fruit to fill the boxes, and we have also added a few new options for other donations to our list this year.

VOLUNTEER AT RESPITE CARE ATLANTA Respite Care Atlanta is seeking volunteers for its weekly respite program assisting adults living with mild-to-moderate dementia. Volunteers get to share their ideas and talents while helping to provide a safe and stimulating environment for program participants. The next volunteer session is Monday, November 13, from 10-11 a.m. Contact Jane Brann at jbrann@spdl.org to register and learn more.

If you would like to contribute items for the baskets or be present for the fun of delivering baskets this year, sign up at cathedralATL.org/habitatbaskets. Donations for the baskets should be dropped off in conference room 239 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, December 8. Basket delivery will take place on Saturday, December 9. Contact the Rev. Julia Mitchener, julia.mitchener@ cathedralATL.org with questions. Please consider contributing to this joyful event!
