The CATHEDRAL TIMES The weekly newsletter of the Cathedral of St. Philip · Serving Atlanta and the World · January 6, 2019

THE CHRIST IS BORN! THANK YOU! By the Very Rev. Sam Candler Dean of the Cathedral Thank you, thank you, thank you, for preparing the way for the Christ to be born! Yes, Jesus the Christ was born over two thousand years ago. But the way we celebrated that event here at the Cathedral prepared the way for the Christ to be born here in Atlanta, in the world, in our hearts. Christ was born, again and again, in the last two weeks here: in our celebrations, in our service to the world, in our pageants, in our conversations and songs and prayers. And, surely, in our giving. The Cathedral Parish of St. Philip serves and celebrates because people give here. We—you!—give a lot. That means time and effort and care and money—and then even more time. Every gift counts. Together, our gifts become a glorious proclamation that Jesus Christ is born and alive in the world today. Thank you! As we return to routines, in a new year, the Cathedral also resumes our work. Our new Cathedral Chapter goes on our annual retreat during the first weekend of January (4-6). But we will be back for the annual Epiphany party on the evening of January 6! We present the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra on January 11. Our youth go on a confirmation retreat at Camp Mikell on January 11. We are also preparing, quietly, for some other, special, January events. Finally, as the month ends, we will be starting our annual Cathedral Antiques Show (23-26). As the routines of 2019 begin, the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip continues to serve the gospel of Jesus Christ with grace, excellence, and hospitality. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for that service, and for your gifts. Christ is born in your giving!

THE GATHERING

ORGANIST NED TIPTON TO PERFORM ON SUNDAY

The Cathedral of St. Philip is only as fabulous as the people who create our community and make it sacred. Following Evensong on Sunday, January 13, we want to give thanks for our LGBTQ community. The day prior, we celebrate the feast of St. Aelred of Rievaulx, whose theological writings both shaped the church and lifted up the beauty of same-sex relationships. So on January 13 we’ll host The Gathering to give thanks for our gay friends! All are welcome—5:30 p.m. in the Gould Room. Gay, straight, questioning—just come as the fullest expression of who God created you to be. Contact Canon Lauren Holder, lholder@ cathedralATL.org, for more information.

On Sunday, January 6, we welcome organist Ned Tipton as our recitalist at 3:15 p.m. A double graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, Ned has a long history with the Cathedral of St. Philip. He has performed here on several occasions— including the Atlanta Summer Organ Festival—and served as the sabbatical replacement organist/choirmaster during Robert Simpson’s tenure here in the late 1980s. We are thrilled to have Ned back again, and we encourage everyone to come and hear one of the great 20th- and 21st-century American organists.

YOU ARE INVITED TO DINNER… WITH FRIENDS! A Chicago Dinner to facilitate racial healing and understanding Since 1995, the Chicago Dinners Project has been bringing small, diverse groups of people together through “Dinner with Friends” to foster community discussions about critical social issues and to create civic engagement through our communities. These facilitated conversations provide an opportunity, for many a rare opportunity, to sit down at the table with others who do not look or live like us and to talk honestly about important and often awkward subjects like race. The project is inspired by the belief that such informal conversations among people from different backgrounds are a vital step in healing our nation’s racial divide and helping us grow in understanding and acceptance of one another. The Cathedral is excited to partner with this project to host two dinners, Sundays, January 27 and February 24 at 6 p.m., and we hope you will join us for dinner and a conversation with others about our experiences around race. Register at cathedralATL.org/dinners — space is limited, so register soon! Contact Canon Cathy Zappa, czappa@cathedralATL.org, or Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL.org or 404-365-1031, for more information.

THRIFT HOUSE FOLLIES The Cathedral Thrift House is hosting the Thrift House

Follies in Child Hall on Thursday, February 21, from 6:30–8 p.m. A runway fashion show featuring models from the Cathedral and beautiful fashions from Thrift House donations, proceeds will benefit Respite Care Atlanta. J.S. Bach to Wolfgang Mozart

A Little Night Music

Friday, January 11 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Philip Saturday, January 12 4 p.m. at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Roswell Julie Andrijeski, artistic director and concertmaster with Jaap ter Linden, guest director and soloists Julie Andrijeski and Evan Few, violin; Adam Jaffe, harpsichord; Janice Joyce Robinson, flute Presented by the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra and Friends of Cathedral Music Although J.S. Bach and W.A. Mozart were not innovators of a new style, they both brought established styles to perfection and rightly remain among the most famous composers to this day. World-renowned Dutch cellist and conductor Jaap ter Linden joins us as guest director for this blockbuster program that features Bach’s virtuosic Fifth Brandenburg Concerto contrasted with his dark and soulful Violin Concerto in A minor, and Mozart’s famously effervescent Eine kleine Nachtmusik featuring a star-studded line-up of soloists. Advance tickets and Patron tickets are available online at atlantabaroque.org. For more information, call 678-3900657 or email info@atlantabaroque.org.
