In addition to our volunteer run booths, the Oyster Bake Committee affords many St. Mary’s University student groups the opportunity to participate in the event and raise money for their organizations. Student groups gain “real world” experience by developing a business plan that includes profit/loss projections, contingency plans and operational details. This year, we will be able to increase the number of participating student groups from 31 to 36. The bottom line… The money raised at Fiesta Oyster Bake stays within our community and University. Realizing this year’s theme, “The World Is Your Oyster,” the Fiesta Oyster Bake Committee invites you to come and make the Bake your own by volunteering or attending the event to experience our enhanced entertainment and enjoy a mouthwatering Chicken on a Stick! Building on last year’s success, we will continue to rotate our stage genres a bit. On Friday, in our amphitheater-type area, located behind the baseball field, we will feature a national recording, Country music star during “family night.” On Saturday, we will continue with our Rock music featuring national, regional and local rock bands. Fiesta Oyster Bake is also a successful event because of the continued support from the

This event would not be possible without the Alumni Relations staff and all of their hard work and dedication, not just during the Bake, but also year round. The staff includes Pete Hansen (’88, ’04), Steve Rosenauer (’92, ’96), Fred Meyer, Andrea Carranco (’06), Norma Garza (’06), Brother Al Gillis and Ernie DeWinne (’70). Our Corporate Sponsors are an amazing and wonderful addition to our Fiesta Oyster Bake family. I encourage you to support our sponsors, such as Silver Eagle Distributors, and all our returning sponsors. This year’s committee has volunteered countless hours to produce a value added experience for our guests. The 2014 Fiesta Oyster Bake Committee is the following: Darrell Stewart (’92), Alumni Association President; Imelda Guzman (’01, ’07), 2015 Chair; Bob Mason (’68), 2016 Chair; Jason Longoria (’00), David Padilla (’01), Mary Almanza (’04, ’06), Paul Gittinger, Alfred Lopez (’86, ’93, ’97), Corinne Vela Zapata (’82), Chris Martinez (’00) , Mike Martinez (’85) and Steve Dziuk (’90). Chairing the Bake has been a dream of mine since I started volunteering at a Chocolate Covered Strawberry booth as an undergraduate. It could not be possible without the love and support of my wife, Melissa, and our baby on the way. It is truly a privilege to serve and give back to a University that has given me so much. Since “The World Is Your Oyster,” come out and celebrate. Viva Fiesta and Viva Oyster Bake!!! Chris Boone (B.B.A. ’01, M.B.A. ‘03) 2014 Fiesta Oyster Bake Chair

Because of our alumni support and volunteer efforts, Fiesta Oyster Bake is not your average run of the mill event. We are unique because the success of the event depends on the support and dedication of more than 7,000 volunteers. Many of our volunteers come back year after year, making this a family tradition and passing the volunteer responsibilities from generation to generation.

Message from the Association President Greetings from the Alumni Association! If you attended or received a degree from St. Mary’s University, you are a part of the St. Mary’s family. New programs, facilities and additions to student life are always being implemented to further the excellence of the University. We invite you to stay in touch as you go through life and rest assured we will welcome you with open arms and a smile. I hope you are looking forward to all our spring events! On March 21, the law school will have its annual homecoming and continuing legal education beginning at 8 a.m. On March 29 all are welcome to attend our annual Homecoming Oyster Bake, which begins after the Homecoming Mass. If you live out of town, look for a reception near you, or let us know when you will be visiting San Antonio. It is always great to catch up with fellow alumni! Our Alumni Association is strong, but we always need your support with time, treasure or talent. If you have a job opening or an internship opportunity, please inform the Civic Engagement and Career Development Center to help our students build their resume and skill set. As an alum, you can also seek employment assistance and/or help revising your resume. Volunteering your time at our events is also a way to provide both talent and time. Our biggest fundraiser, Fiesta Oyster Bake, will take place on April 11 & 12, 2014. If you are in the San Antonio

area, please consider volunteering at one of our booths. Thank you to all who volunteer, as it takes 7,000 of us, to make the event happen. The success of Oyster Bake and other fundraising events, such as the Oysters and Pearls Scholarship Gala, are the leading funding source for our scholarship endowment at St. Mary’s University. We are always seeking new sponsors and supporters of our events. Giving annually to the University not only provides funding for our programs, but also looks favorable when applying for grants and increases our alumni participation rate. National publications, such as U.S. News & World Report, consider alumni participation rates when compiling national rankings of all universities. If you have not yet made a gift to St. Mary’s University this year, please consider doing so. My two-year term as President of the Alumni Association ends in August, at which time Jason Longoria (B.A. ’00) will undertake this role. I am proud of the accomplishments we have achieved during my term and acknowledge that nothing could happen without a fine group of interested alumni. I will continue to attend our events, look forward to helping where I can, and will support Jason as we all continue on the path of excellence for the Alumni Association. Thank you alumni, for all that you do, and look for opportunities to help us! Darrell G. Stewart (J.D. ’92) Alumni Association President

Every Gift Makes an Impact The increasing cost of higher education across the country forces students and their families to make tough decisions when they consider pursuing an undergraduate degree. Even though tuition at St. Mary’s is priced below the national average for four-year private institutions, students must expect to make a significant financial commitment. Many students and their families are unable to fund the entire cost of tuition. In fact, 87% of students rely on scholarships and grants for support with tuition. The St. Mary’s University

Annual Scholarship Fund helps students meet the gap between their resources and the cost of the academic excellence St. Mary’s offers. Your contribution ensures our University remains a competitive option in an increasingly crowded higher education landscape. Consider making a gift today to the St. Mary’s University Annual Scholarship Fund. Visit www.stmarytx.edu/giving to make a gift today! Your participation truly has the ability to transform lives. No gift is too small, and every gift makes a difference.

Support Scholarships and You Could Be a Winner! The Sweepstakes for Scholarships program is underway, and Chris Boone (’01, ’03), 2014 Fiesta Oyster Bake Chair, will be picking one lucky winner on Saturday, April 12, to let him or her know that he or she have won $10,000 worth of credit toward the credit card of their choice. That call might go to you, but you can’t win if you don’t play. Please check your mail and enter the Sweepstakes for Scholarships by returning your ticket stubs and suggested donation of $5 per ticket to the Alumni Relations Office. More importantly, your support of the Sweepstakes for Scholarships program enables the Alumni Association to add to their scholarship endowment fund which this year has helped provide scholarship monies to more than 70 current St. Mary’s University students.

Support Undergraduate Research The University sponsors the annual Research Symposium and Creative Activities Exhibition, which gives students an opportunity to participate in undergraduate research and impact the world of science.

Presenters at the exhibition display an assortment of projects including scientific investigations, analytical reviews or projects, honors theses, senior projects, engineering projects and original works of art, poetry or writing.

2015: March 28 2016: April 2 Welcome Home, Alumni!

St. Mary’s University President, Tom Mengler, J.D., and his executive team. I would also like to thank the student workers, the University’s students, faculty and staff, University Police Department, University Park Neighborhood Association and the Fiesta Commission for their continued support.
