s the days grow warmer, our parks reach the pinnacle of their beauty and popularity. Meanwhile, our dedicated parks department staff has been working hard to prepare for spring and summer visitors. We are especially excited about our new Creve Coeur Park Soccer Complex. The complex is home to 13 artificial turf fields, including a standalone championship field with permanent seating for up to 500 spectators and two smaller, youth-sized natural grass fields. Eleven of the artificial turf fields are lighted. The facility includes concessions, restrooms and lighted parking areas. Another recent and popular addition at Queeny Park is our Native Tree Trail. As visitors walk the trail, they can learn about the trees along the way using maps provided at the park or by using their smart phones to scan information codes on signs next to the trees. These attractions follow the openings in recent years of the Pavilion at Lemay recreation center and pool and the Aquatic Center at the North County Recreation Complex. Swimming lessons are available at our rec centers. Of course, the County will again offer a wide compliment of summer activities, including day camps to keep children engaged and occupied during their summer break from school. I also encourage a visit to our recently opened dog park at Queeny Park. This five-acre space offers pets and their human friends a place to romp. The park includes dog agility courses and water features. For history buffs, we have assembled a compelling exhibit, “Over There: World War I from Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis & Missouri.” This second part of our World War I centennial exhibit runs through Dec. 30 in the Old Ordnance Room at Jefferson Barracks Park. It focuses on the role American soldiers played in the war and highlights how Missourians and St. Louisans of that time helped transform the 20th century. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Please see the special events section of this guide for a schedule of concerts at Faust Park and the dates of our Food Truck Fest at various County parks. Each of our 71 St. Louis County parks is a treasure and makes an invaluable contribution to the quality of life of County residents. I have made the enhancement and promotion of our parks a priority of my administration. I hope you will join my family and me as we enjoy the terrific amenities and activities at our St. Louis County parks this spring and summer. Yours very truly,

The Legacies of WWI

March 3, 1918: America is deeply entrenched in WWI, while women are waging their own war back home; holding their families together while their men are overseas, along with fighting for the right to vote! Come learn how St. Louis women were involved in this struggle, and how you can easily put together an era-appropriate outfit to join in upcoming events as we forge ahead to 2020 and the 100th anniversary of that hard won 19th Amendment! For information call (314) 615-8800 or email jmagurany@stlouisco.com.

The vast and diverse legacies of World War I made a tremendous impact on the world. In Europe, empires disappeared and new countries were formed. Technological, cultural and medical circumstances made radical changes on the world at large. Though separated by an ocean from Europe, the Great War left its mark on society in America as well as on the Doughboys that returned home. Exhibits & Exhibitions Over There: WWI from Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis & Missouri

Currier & Ives: Purveyors of Cheap & Popular

The second-part of our World War I centennial exhibitions, “Over There,” will bring the important battles of the Great War in 1918 to life. Focusing on the American soldiers, their deployment, their life in the trenches, their defeats and victories, and their role in ending the war, the exhibit will highlight the important role Americans, Missourians and St. Louisans played in transforming the 20th century. The exhibit will also examine the lasting impacts of the Armistice and the road to World War II.

In the mid-to-late 19th century few decorative items were more popular than a Currier & Ives print. The New York City based printmaker and publisher led by Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives produced more than 7,500 lithographs over 72 years of operation. Artists produced two to three new images each week and the business partners cranked out lithographic prints that were each colored by hand and sold for 25-cents to $3 to an eager public wanting to decorate their homes with a touch of sophistication, beauty, history, or humor. A few select original prints in the Bissell House collection offer a peek into the style and substance of Currier & Ives.

Farid Rasulov

Based in Baku, Azerbaijan, Farid Rasulov trained to be a doctor at the Azerbaijan State Medical University and has since become an artist. Rasulov draws his subjects from the traditional, cultural practices that slowly become erased from the Azerbaijani collective memory in the face of a rapidly modernizing and globalizing socialpolitical context. Rasulov’s project at Laumeier continues his current exploration in sculpture based on complex, cultural references from the Caucasus. Curated by Dana Turkovic. Visit www.laumeier.org for more information. Supported by an Independent Artist Project grant from CEC Artslink. Farid Rasulov: 1001 Skewers is a large-scale, sculptural installation inside the Aronson Fine Arts Center using more than 1,000 kebab skewers with configurations based on Azeri fairy tales. Bird #1, 2018, is a monumental, outdoor sculpture commission—the concrete artwork is a formal extraction of geometric, abstract shapes inspired by Asian carpet ornaments. Rasulov’s two installations are whimsical, humorous applications of design techniques inspired by Rasulov’s heritage in Azerbaijan.

Creve Coeur Park Soccer Complex

Paric Corporation is putting the finishing touches on the $13.8 million Creve Coeur Park Soccer Complex. The facility, set on the western edge of Creve Coeur Lake, is on pace to open this month with a host of St. Louis-area soccer clubs poised to call the complex home. When completed, the complex will be home to 13 artificial turf fields, including a standalone championship field with permanent seating for up to 500 spectators and two smaller, youth-sized natural grass fields. In addition to the fields, the complex will afford visitors ample concessions, restrooms and lighted parking areas throughout. Eleven of the artificial turf fields will be lighted. The project will bring more than a dozen soccer tournaments to Creve Coeur Park in 2018, drawing teams from all over the Midwest region. The highlight of first year is Creve Coeur Park Soccer Complex being named the host site for the 2018 Missouri Youth Soccer Association’s State Cup. This event is the culmination of the club soccer season in Missouri with more than 264 games scheduled over two weekends in June (June 2-4, 8-9). Youth players on teams ranging from U13 to U19 boys along with U13, U14 and U19 girls will compete. In addition to soccer the complex is able to host sports such as lacrosse, flag football and ultimate frisbee. For more information and rental inquiries please go to www.ccparksoccer.com.
