County Council As the days grow warmer, our parks reach the pinnacle of their popularity. Our dedicated St. Louis County Parks and Recreation Department staff has been working hard to prepare for spring and summer visitors. We are especially excited to be introducing new fishing programs in partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our region’s participation in the Urban Fishing Program. The federal government initiated the program in 1969 with the goal of bringing the pleasure of fishing to urban communities. A special Family Fishing Day will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on May 4 at Suson and Bella Fontaine parks. The MDC will stock the lakes with fish for this free event. St. Louis County Parks and Recreation will also hold Discover Nature Fishing programs that will include lessons for all ages. These events will be held on June 1 at Tilles Park, July 13 at Bee Tree Park and Aug. 10 at the North County Recreation Center. The classes are free and bait and tackle will be provided. This year’s popular Mud Mania, featuring a mud pit and obstacle course for children, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 28 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 29. Tickets are $10 a person and can be purchased in advance through a link on our County website or by calling (314) 615-4386 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. A new feature at Faust, Jefferson Barracks and Laumeier Sculpture parks allows visitors to take a digital tour of the parks’ historical elements. While strolling through the parks, visitors can use their smart phones to scan information codes along the way to learn more about homes, barns, monuments and other features. These attractions follow the openings in recent years of the Pavilion at Lemay recreation center and pool, and the Aquatic Center at the North County Recreation Complex. Swimming lessons are available at our rec centers. Of course, County Parks and Recreation will again offer a wide compliment of summer activities, including numerous camps to keep children engaged and occupied during their summer break from school. I also encourage a visit to our dog park at Queeny Park. This five-acre space offers pets and their human friends a place to romp. The park includes dog agility courses and water features. For history buffs, we have assembled a compelling exhibit, “Looking Back from 75: The Liberation of Northwestern Europe.” This special exhibit reflects on the liberation of the region from Nazi tyranny 75 years ago. It runs through Dec. 30 in the Old Ordnance Room at Jefferson Barracks Park. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. And please see the Special Events section of this guide for a schedule of concerts at Faust Park and the dates of our Food Truck Fests at various County parks. Each of our 73 St. Louis County parks is a treasure and makes an invaluable contribution to the quality of life of County residents. I have made the enhancement and promotion of our parks a priority of my administration. I hope you will join my family and me as we enjoy the terrific amenities and activities at our St. Louis County parks this spring and summer.

Yours very truly,

Trail Watch

Trail Watch is a volunteer program in which hikers, cyclist, skaters and equestrians assist park rangers in monitoring the many trails in our St. Louis County parks. There are more than 144 miles of trails in St. Louis County Parks & we need your help monitoring them! As a Trail Watch Volunteer, you’ll assist Park Rangers in keeping our trails safe and enjoyable for all. Volunteers, ages 16 years and older, must attend an initial two-hour orientation (one held every fall and spring) where Park Rangers teach trail etiquette & reporting procedures. Trail Watch Volunteers serve as ambassadors, but do not intervene in dangerous situations (only report them). Advance registration required by calling (314) 615-8822 or emailing sbell@stlouisco.com. Military Miniatures: Toy Soldiers from the Collection

Toy soldiers have been used for centuries as playthings and as tools of military planning and strategy. Their popularity grew in the early 18th century due to the campaigns of Frederick the Great. These modeled figures offer tremendous detail depicting actual soldiers and specific units of various armies of the world. The exhibition will feature toy soldiers from the Daniel Bissell House Collection. Schedule a visit to learn about these toys and the time period they represent, including where the units they portray served and what battles that they participated in the past, as military historians describe their uniforms and provide insight into their history. How We See: The Materiality of Color Indoor Exhibition / March 2 – June 30, 2019 Laumeier Sculpture Park, Aronson Fine Art Center

We can understand color in an approximate sequence of Newton’s spectrum. We know what a color does to excite us but it is hard to tell what it is. These artist’s colored materials, however, are the product of modern technology in material sciences. Their very choice does more than show that the artist’s creations have beauty, but rather suggests that the artist’s production of endless color variations is not unlike nature’s manner of reproduction. The selection of sculptural work for How We See, will be viewed on one level as an undemanding chromatic display, but with further investigation each artist uses color to reference and amplify its “objectness” and choice of material or surface. Some deal explicitly with color and its possibilities in mapping space, and the difficulties that arise in understanding the origins of chromatic experiences in post-industrial objects. Others are subversive and political that play with the power of perception. A few of these sculptural works are simply relational and activate the science of color, implicating the viewer while heightening their sensibilities using light and dust. Each, not unlike those experiences found in nature, but also not unlike the utility of color and the precise interplay of the natural with the unnatural. Organized by Dana Turkovic, Curator

Looking Back From 75: The Liberation of Northwestern Europe

As a reflection on the liberation of Northwestern Europe from Nazi domination, the events of 1944 will be the focus of the Old Ordnance Room in this, their 75th anniversary. Starting with the events of the spring and summer of 1944, the initial exhibition will focus on D-Day and the Battle of the Hedgerows. General Information & History

Thornhill Grounds: Built ca. 1819 for Missouri’s second governor, Frederick Bates. Thornhill is the oldest standing governor’s home in Missouri and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The estate consists of a number of restored and recreated structures, including a detached kitchen and three barns. History The house was designed in 1950 at the request of St. Louis artist Russell Kraus and his wife Ruth who lived in the home together until Ruth’s death in 1992. A nonprofit purchased the home from Russell in 2001 and donated the house and property to St. Louis County.
