s the days grow warmer, our parks will reach the pinnacle of their beauty and popularity. Meanwhile, our dedicated parks department staff has been working heard to prepare for spring and summer visitors. We are especially excited about our newer park features, including the county’s first dog park at Queeny Park. This five-acre space offers pets and their human friends a place to romp. It includes dog agility courses and water features. And for dog lovers, it is ideally located on the south side of another popular site, the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog. Another recent and popular addition at Queeny Park is the park system’s first Native Tree Trail. As visitors walk the trail, they can learn about the trees along the way using maps provided at the park or by using their smart phones to scan information codes on signs next to the trees. I encourage history buffs to visit a new exhibit, “Jefferson Barracks and World War I,” opening May 20 in the Old Ordnance Room at Jefferson Barracks Park. This exhibit marks the centennial of America’s entry into the “Great War.” It explores the events that led to the declaration of war on Germany in 1917 and the conflict’s impact on Jefferson Barracks, the St. Louis region and the nation. Exhibit hours are noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday - Sunday. These attractions follow on the openings in recent years of the Pavilion at Lemay recreation center and pool and the Aquatic Center at the North County Recreation Complex. And of course, the County will again offer a wide compliment of summer activities, including numerous camps to keep children engaged and occupied during their summer break from school. Each of our 71 St. Louis County parks is a treasure and makes an invaluable contribution to the quality of life of County residents. I have made the enhancement and promotion of our parks a priority of my administration. I hope you will joining my wife, children and me as we enjoy the terrific amenities and activities at our St. Louis County parks this spring and summer. Yours very truly,

Did You Know? Swimming uses every one of the body’s major muscle groups and is a fantastic aerobic activity to get your child’s heart pumping. Plus, it’s a low-impact activity that increases flexibility (while also improving balance and posture!) and remains the sport least likely to cause injuries in kids.

Exhibits & Exhibitions Drawing from the Collection: 40 Years at Laumeier

Laumeier presents a selection of works from the institution’s extensive collection of preparatory drawings, prints, works on paper, collages and photographs in celebration and commemoration of the organization’s 40th Anniversary year. The exhibition demonstrates leadership in the area of contemporary public art by drawing on the breadth and depth of the outdoor collection and the many ways in which artists have approached temporary and permanent sculptural commissions throughout Laumeier’s history. The exhibition features works by internationally renowned artists including Vito Acconci, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Andy Goldsworthy, Donald Judd, Cildo Miereles, David Nash, Valeska Soares, Ursula Von Rydingsvard and Meg Webster, among many others. Opening Reception: Saturday, April 1, 2017 / 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Free to the public Whitaker Foundation Gallery, Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center

Sculpture of John Rogers John Rogers (1829–1904) was an American sculptor who produced very popular, relatively inexpensive figurines in the late 1800s. His small genre sculptures, popularly termed “Rogers Groups”, were mass-produced in cast plaster. A total of 80,000 copies of almost 80 Rogers Groups were sold gracing the parlors of homes in the United States and as far away as Chile and Australia. Lt. Col. George Custer and his wife had one when they lived in the Dakota Territory. Often selling for $15 apiece, the figurines were affordable to the middle class. Rogers was inspired by popular novels, poems and prints as well as the scenes he saw around him. Tours scheduled by advance reservation only. Call (314) 615-8800 or email JMagurany@stlouisco.com. Military Collectors In the last decade or so the collection of military items has increased. Perhaps this is due to the 50th and 60th anniversary of World War II, the 100th Anniversary of World War I, the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812, et cetera, or possibly, because of popular movies such as Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers. This exhibit will explore the reasons why some collectors collect what they do and what they have learned about history while doing so. Learn their stories and study their approach to history. Dates

Raging in Europe since 1914, the “War to End all Wars,” threatened to draw America across the Atlantic Ocean and into a bloody and stalemated global conflict. This centennial exhibition explores the events that forced America’s entry into the “Great War” and the resulting preparations impacting Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri and the nation. Learn about Missouri’s own Gen. John J. Pershing who led the American Expeditionary Force and the thousands of “Doughboys” who brought the American fighting spirit to the battlefield. “Over Here” will be followed by “Over There” in 2018 which will highlight the actions of St. Louisans, Missourians, and Americans during World War I in Europe and the war’s lasting impacts. The St. Louis Carousel is an original 1920s carousel from the Dentzel Co. of Philadelphia. The carousel was installed at the St. Louis Highlands Amusement Park in 1929. After a fire in 1963 destroyed the park, the carousel was moved to Sylvan Springs Park and operated there until 1979. The St. Louis County Historic Buildings commission and the Faust Park Foundation raised funds to restore the Carousel, bringing it to Faust Park.

General Information & History Thornhill Grounds: Built ca. 1819 for Missouri’s second governor, Frederick Bates, Thornhill is the oldest standing governor’s home in Missouri and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The estate consists of a number of restored and recreated structures, including a detached kitchen and three barns. Historic Village: The Historic Village at Faust Park includes four homes and 14 additional structures representing a variety of building and architectural styles, from log to brick. All of which have been saved from demolition and preserved by Park staff. Spanning a period from 1840 to 1910, the Village provides a context in which the lifestyles of the settlers of St. Louis County and the skills they used to survive are illustrated.

Educational Programs & Activities The history staff at Faust Park offers a variety of educational programs and guided tours for all ages and abilities. Our most popular program is the fourhour “Farmsteading at Thornhill”. Many students call this their favorite field trip despite the fact that they are performing physical chores expected of a 19th century child.

Hours & Pricing General park hours are 8 a.m. – 30 minutes past sunset, when all buildings can be viewed from the outside at no cost. Informational brochures are available in our office, and online to aid in a self-guided tour. Guided tours of historic areas are $4.00 per person (minimum of 10 people) and are available on weekdays by appointment only. Call (314) 615-8336 or email THoff@stlouisco.com for more information.
