a Tierra del Encanto, or the Land of Enchantment, is New Mexico’s well-earned moniker. Santa Fe, the oldest capital city in North America, is a jewel among the mountains. This is where you’ll find the younger of St. John’s College’s two campuses, built right into the Rocky Mountains. Gazing out on a Santa Fe sunset or sunrise from one of our many balconies is an ideal setting to contemplate the timeless questions of the great thinkers you’ll be reading every day. The fragrant pines and peaceful lull of the hilly campus create a haven for deep thought and bonding with new friends. When you’re here, you are surrounded by nature and able to enjoy the natural beauty without needing to leave campus. You and your 400 or so classmates will build community through a wide range of clubs and extracurriculars — from snowboarding to mock trial, from Amnesty International to archery, from tai chi to t able tennis. Plus, almost the whole student body lives on campus, so friendships blossom from class to dorm life to meals in the dining hall. Arts and music events h appen on campus regularly, providing easy access to culture. Art lovers and foodies who want to venture beyond

campus will delight in Santa Fe’s cultural offerings. Galleries and restaurants range from traditional to contemporary. You can easily access the city, as campus is just a few miles away, but you’ll be secluded enough that you’ll never struggle to find a quiet moment. Beyond the city limits stretch miles of mountains, forests, and rivers waiting to be explored. These scenic lands are rich with the history of their original stewards: the Jicarilla Apache, Pueblo, and Jumanos Peoples. You can head to the Atalaya trailhead right off campus, or head further afield to the Santa Fe Ski Basin or places for water sports, rock climbing, and mountain biking. Even if roughing it isn’t your thing, you can hop in a car with a few friends and hit the open road. If this blend of culture, tranquility, and adventure sounds enticing, then St. John’s College in Santa Fe might just be the perfect place for you.

Resting in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Santa Fe is the highest-altitude city in America. A prime destination for skiers and boarders, hikers and backpackers, mountain bikers and climbers, the city sits at 7,000 feet — and delivers 5,000 feet of elevation gain between downtown and the Santa Fe ski basin, which towers over Santa Fe at a rarified 12,000 feet. The result? Santa Feans enjoy two worlds in one: the warm, sunny environs of the city itself, and the pine forests with their snow-covered peaks up above. With so much natural beauty to soak in, your weekends will be filled with vitamin D and rejuvenation. If you’re primed for adventure, there’s no end to what you can explore. Santa Fe County boasts more than 470 miles of hiking, biking, and backpacking trails. If you get your kicks on water, the Rio Grande river awaits rafters and kayakers alike, with a steep, 800-foot gorge that will take your breath away. There’s even a plethora of outfitters to set you up for a horseback adventure. Ride safe, cowpoke.

HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO EXPLORE THE GREAT AMERICAN WEST?

Ever wanted to hit the open road in search of something you didn’t know you were searching for? Look no further than Santa Fe, where Johnnies roadtrip throughout the great American Southwest. Route 66, known as the Mother Road, was one of the first highways in America and ran just south of Santa Fe. Today, Santa Fe continues to draw roadtripping explorers, eager to experience the rich cultures that thrive here. New Mexico isn’t just a physically beautiful place — it is one of the most culturally diverse states in the nation. Indigenous Peoples hailing from 19 Pueblos mix with Latinx communities and others to create one of the only majority-minority states in the country with a flavor all its own. The diversity of the state and the unique diversity of our student body enhance the St. John’s College experience, as students hail from a multitude of races, ethnicities, gender and gender identities, sexual orientations, faith traditions, socio-economic backgrounds, and political perspectives. We are also one of the most international colleges in America.

Most buildings on our campus feature balconies. This includes dormitories — 85 percent have at least one balcony that students can access. This creates a campus-wide culture of gatherings high in the sky — from reading groups and dinner parties to band practices and tutor-student gatherings. There’s nothing better than access to fresh air and magnificent vistas. The blazing, technicolor New Mexico sunset will touch your very soul. Balconies are just one feature that makes life on campus so appealing. Most students live in single rooms within small adobe-style buildings, which makes for tight-knit dorm communities. The dining hall commands stunning views of mountains and forests, so you’ll dine in style on a healthy, evolving menu designed for every diet. You’ll spend cool fall nights and brilliant spring afternoons exploring every nook of campus. And to unwind, you can head to The Cave, our student-run cafe featuring game nights, open mic nights, and more.

200 ART GALLERIES S A N TA F E A R E A

As the artistic capital of the Southwest, Santa Fe is known for its Spanish colonial heritage and Native American culture, its massive arts market and robust film sector, its pioneering role in science and alternative medicine, and its celebrated food culture. The art scene is expansive, with more than 200 art galleries throughout the city. The intersection of contemporary, abstract, modern, and expressionist styles with Native American and western traditions creates an art scene unlike any other. This art culture thrives on campus as well. Roll up your sleeves and create something of your own at our pottery studio that is free to all students. Or get involved with theater, dance, or music and perform for your peers at our biannual college-wide event, Collegium. Arts and music events occur throughout the year, capped off by the openair Music On The Hill, a summer tradition that brings students, staff, and community members together for a day of music out in nature.

WHAT MAKES ST. JOHN’S “THE MOST CONTRARIAN COLLEGE IN AMERICA”? — The New York Times

S T. J O H N ’ S C O L L E G E

O N E G R E AT B O O K S C O L L EG E . T WO G R E AT C A M P U S E S . St. John’s was founded in 1696, making it the third oldest college in the U.S. — and we remain the most distinct. There is no college as rigorously intellectual as St. John’s. Our students share a common curriculum — they read and discuss many of the greatest books of all time. Students learn from history’s most significant authors and artists: Plato, Austen, Bach, Einstein, Woolf, and Du Bois, to name a few. Discussion-based classes of 20 students or fewer explore philosophy, literature, science, music, language, politics, and more. Whether hiking in the mountain capital of Santa Fe, or playing croquet in the storied city of Annapolis, you will immerse yourself in a truly singular education — with peers who love to talk about ideas as much as you do. Four years here prepare you for anything, thanks to the depth and breadth of the learning. The careers of tomorrow call for exactly what St. John’s cultivates: self-driven inquiry and analysis, fearless examination of complex issues, interdisciplinary problem-solving, excellence in writing and confidence in self-expression.  sjc.edu/academic
