Even more, the cultural and career hubs of DC, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore are just a short ride away. Get ready for four years of great books, long conversations, and good friends. Initially founded as King William’s School, we were the first institute of higher learning in the then-colony of Maryland. Our history has been linked with America’s ever since. Four of the college’s founders signed the Declaration of Independence, and President George Washington himself expressed, “much satisfaction at the appearance of this rising [college].” Since then, we’ve undergone evolutions and revolutions. 1937 saw the adoption of the New Program, the original name of our Great Books curriculum. The college was among the first to welcome people of color, and today our student body is diverse in every sense: race, ethnicity, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, socio-economic background, faith, and political perspective. St. John’s is a center of independent thinking, civil debate, and contrarian ideas; a community that values great books and great ideas; and a college that sends into the world independent, creative, and compassionate graduates.

There’s no such thing as an average day in Annapolis, a city that’s been around since 1649 and is home to equal parts history, culture, and nautical traditions. Annapolis is best known for its colonial architecture, charming downtown, music and theater scenes, and, of course, incredible crab cakes. St. John’s is located at the center of the city, so you can walk and bike everywhere. Explore the brick-lined streets, go sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, or settle in to read in a nook at one of the many cozy cafés. Annapolis is both the capital of Maryland and 30 minutes from Washing ton, DC, so Johnnies are often change-makers who immerse themselves in politics, law, and journalism. From sea-side Annapolis to downtown Washington, you can take up an internship, visit the greatest museums in America, and find a caring community right back on campus.

There’s nothing like the feeling of belonging to a community. Our tight-knit campus — marked by elegant architecture, red brick walkways, and soaring canopies — is a welcoming mix of peers from across the country and the world. No one chooses St. John’s by accident, which means that each classmate made the decision to be there alongside you: reading, conversing, rowing, and waltzing for four of the most stimulating and enriching years of one’s life. St. John’s is a residential community where all freshmen and sophomores live on campus and eat in the dining hall. You’re never more than a two-minute walk from the center of campus, and whether your room looks out over the Quad, the Front Lawn, or College Creek, most dorms feature common rooms, laundry, and kitchens. You’ll find students love to gather together to read and chat on the Quad, in Randall Dining Hall, around the fireplace in the McDowell Hall coffee shop, among the stacks in Greenfield Library, and at the fishbowl in Mellon Hall.

Interested in learning how to play croquet? The St. John’s croquet team holds the most national titles in America. The team challenges the Naval Academy to the Annapolis Cup each spring, one of the most beloved campus traditions. We take croquet seriously, but that means we don’t take ourselves too seriously (hence the creative croquet uniforms you’ll find on the lawn). What most students take more seriously than croquet are the coed intramural sports. Just as students take the lead and support one another in classes, students of all levels and abilities energetically and amiably compete in the field and on the court. For others still, there’s fencing, sailing, and morning crew on College Creek. Beyond athletics, there are dozens of student groups. The largest is the community service organization, but some of the most popular include singing groups, theater, music, art, and study groups. However you want to spend your time outside the classroom — giving back, exercising your mind, or just plain fun — options abound.

WHAT MAKES ST. JOHN’S “THE MOST CONTRARIAN COLLEGE IN AMERICA”? — The New York Times

S T. J O H N ’ S C O L L E G E I N A N N A P O L I S

O N E G R E AT B O O K S C O L L EG E . T WO G R E AT C A M P U S E S . St. John’s was founded in 1696, making it the third oldest college in the U.S. — and we remain the most distinct. There is no college as rigorously intellectual as St. John’s. Our students share a common curriculum — they read and discuss over 200 of the greatest books of all time. Students learn from history’s most significant authors and artists: Plato, Austen, Bach, Einstein, Woolf, and Du Bois, to name a few. Discussion-based classes of 20 students or fewer explore philosophy, literature, science, music, language, politics, and more. Whether hiking in the mountain capital of Santa Fe, or playing croquet in the storied city of Annapolis, you will immerse yourself in a truly singular education — with peers who love to talk about ideas as much as you do. Four years here prepare you for anything, thanks to the depth and breadth of the learning. The careers of tomorrow call for exactly what St. John’s cultivates: self-driven inquiry and analysis, fearless examination of complex issues, interdisciplinary problem-solving, excellence in writing, and confidence in self-expression.  sjc.edu/academic
