Men’s Basketball Gaining Momentum Corey Williams

Stetson’s youthful men’s basketball team spent the nonconference season gaining momentum and learning what it takes to succeed at the Division I level. The Hatters endured some heartbreaking losses (FIU), near-misses (FSU) and eyeopening individual performances over the season’s first two months. Head coach Corey Williams believes the Hatters are ready for the A-Sun gauntlet. “We’ve made some progress in the last few weeks,” said Williams. “Are we there yet? No. But I like the direction we’re headed in. This is when the real season starts. That’s not to say that the other games didn’t matter, but this is when we have to perform like a well-oiled machine. I like our attitude, and I like our persona. Our guys are starting to believe that we can win, but we still have a lot of work to do.” With eight newcomers on the roster– including seven scholarship freshmen – the Hatters were, not surprisingly – picked to finish eighth in the eight-team Atlantic Sun.

HATTERS EXTRA

Four of the five freshmen who have seen minutes this season have scored in double-figures at least once, and point guards Angel Rivera and Divine Myles rank in the A-Sun Top 10 in assists. While the freshmen get a lot of attention, the veterans have been providing leadership and production. Senior Kentwan Smith was named A-Sun Player of the week on Dec. 29 after scoring 21 points with seven rebounds and four assists in a narrow loss at Florida State. Fellow senior Kyle Sikora is enjoying the best season of his career, with a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) against Florida State and 15 points and eight rebounds against Florida Tech. Sophomore Brian Pegg has battled nagging injuries but was Stetson’s leading scorer entering league play. The Hatters host their first conference game of the season on Jan. 17 when they welcome North Florida to Edmunds Center.

Jama Sharp Scores Her 1000th Point

Jama Sharp Stetson women’s basketball senior guard Jama Sharp was hoping to reach the 1000-point milestone during a lateDecember homestand at the Edmunds Center. Instead, Sharp got to accomplish the special feat in her home state of Indiana during Stetson’s 73-62 win over Valparaiso on Jan. 3. After going 1-for-8 and scoring two points in the previous game against UNCW, Sharp finally had her wait end just 32 seconds into the Valparaiso contest as she drained a 3-pointer from the left side. “It felt good,” Sharp said. “I have been trying for three games. I would have liked to have had it last game, but now I am past it and can move on and get into conference play.” Sharp, a native of Mooresville, Indiana, was able to reach the milestone in front of several family members in attendance. She is the 21st player in school history to score 1000 points.

HATTERS EXTRA

“I am glad it is over, but I am very happy to see her get it,” head coach Lynn Bria said. “It is a great accomplishment. It is hard to do, especially when you play with other great players. It is not like she is taking a lot of shots every game. I am really proud of her, and it is very welldeserved. I am glad she got to get it here in front of her family.” Sharp finished the game with 17 points, six rebounds, and five steals as Stetson won its 11th game of the season. The Hatters have never won 11 regular-season nonconference games prior to this season. With the start of Atlantic Sun Conference play underway, the Hatters are looking for their first-ever regular-season championship and their third conference tournament championship in the past five years. All postseason games will be played at the campus site of the higher seed.

Softball Season Preview

Looking to defend its Atlantic Sun Conference crown, the Stetson softball team is seeking another successful season in 2015. The Hatters will open at home on Feb. 6 against Morehead State as part of the Westin Lake Mary Lead-Off Classic. The Hatters fall practice season included four scrimmage games in which Stetson scored a total of 57 runs. “I thought we scored a lot of runs, and I thought our defense played well,” Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said. “We had to battle through some injuries to our pitching staff. The big question in the spring is, ‘Are our pitchers going to be back and healthy and ready to go?’ I think everything else is in line to make a good season.” Senior Courtney Brandt (2-1, 3.92 ERA in 2014) will look to lead the pitching staff, along with fellow senior Taylor Cochran (01, 4.04) and freshman Chelsea Hostetler (Dayton, Texas). Last season, the Hatters posted 11 shutouts and maintained a 2.12 ERA. Offensively, the Hatters return seven starters, including all five infielders. First

baseman Kayla Drury (.297, 3 HR, 20 RBI) and second baseman Demi Meza (.333, 10, 46) each earned second team allconference honors last season. Shortstop Amanda Grimaldo (.265, 1, 25) had the championship-winning hit in last year’s A-Sun tournament, while Brittany Hawn (.248, 2, 12) has not committed an error over her past 100 chances at third base. Catcher Jessica Griffin (.265, 3, 34) started 52 games behind the plate and ranked third on the team in RBI. Rightfielder Jessie TenBroeck (.351, 1, 14) led the team in batting and stolen bases (30) while claiming a spot on the A-Sun all-freshman team. Brandt (.259, 8, 28) enters her senior season with 22 career home runs and 79 career RBI. Frank Griffin, a recent Stetson Hall of Fame inductee, returns for his 19th season at the helm of the program. He has won more than 800 career games. In all, Stetson will play 40 home games at beautiful Patricia Wilson Field in 2015. The Atlantic Sun Championship will be held May 6-9 in Fort Myers, Florida.

Transfer to Bolster Hatters for Spring Season

Kristine Odaiyar The fall season for the Stetson women’s golf team was largely forgettable for the Hatters. The combination of youth and injuries resulted in the Hatters having an uncharacteristically difficult fall. But, with the turn of the calendar to the spring, Hatters coach Floyd Kerr has renewed optimism that the Hatters will be in the hunt for a fourth Atlantic Sun title come April. Two of the main reasons for his excitement for the spring are the healthy return of sophomore Alessandra Kutz, who was plagued throughout the fall while recovering from wrist surgery. The 2014 A-Sun All-Freshman team member completed just three rounds in two events due to the injury. With time to rest and heal since October, Kerr expects Kutz to return to the form that resulted in three top 10 finishes last year. In addition to Kutz, Stetson sophomore Zsófia Szurovszki and freshman Carolin Schart also missed time with injuries and should be closer to healthy for the spring season.

HATTERS EXTRA

The other big reason for Kerr’s optimism for the spring is the addition of Kristine Odaiyar to the Hatters roster. A native of Ocala, Odaiyar transferred from UCF in December and is eligible to compete for the Hatters during the spring season. As a freshman, Odaiyar earned first team All-Conference honors from the American Athletic Conference. She competed in eight of 11 events during the 2013-14 season, posting a 74.4 scoring average, helping the Knights to a secondplace finish at the AAC championship by shooting 229 to finish seventh overall. Her best finish as a freshman was an 8-under-par 208 to tie for third at the Central District Invitational. She had her career low round of 68 in the first round of that event. “I have seen her play during her junior career many times,” Kerr said. “She is very focused on the golf course, is a very good competitor, and she has a lot of ability. She is not afraid to shoot low scores because she has some on her résumé. Odaiyar is a product of St. John Lutheran School, where she earned a

third-place finish in the state tournament as a freshman in 2009. She was twice named the Ocala Star-Banner Player of the Year – with those awards coming following her eighth- and ninth-grade years. She took her game to the state and national level during her final two years of high school – winning more than 10 individual titles over those two seasons, including three FSGA state championships and multiple wins on the Florida Junior Tour – while studying at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. “I think she will bring a lot of maturity and leadership to our program to help stabilize a young team,” Kerr said. “Even though she is just a sophomore, she has a lot of state and national experience. “The bottom line on Kristine is that she is a winner and she will bring that to our team.” Odaiyar and the rest of the Stetson women’s golf team will make their spring debut Feb. 22-24 at the Amelia Island Collegiate, hosted by Jacksonville at the Amelia National Golf Club in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

I am shooting to have the boys ready for a top five finish, or better.” The Hatters will host Liberty University at Victoria Hills on Monday, Jan. 19, and will then host Atlantic Sun Conference foe Lipscomb on Friday, Jan. 30. Women’s Lacrosse Season Preview

The Stetson lacrosse schedule features 10 home games under first-year head coach Christy Leach. The Hatters open play with an exhibition against the United States’ U19 team at Barron Collier High School in Naples, Fla., on Jan. 17, less than a week after practice begins. The regular season begins on Feb. 14 when the Hatters host Coastal Carolina at the Athletic Training Center. “I think it’s a pretty competitive schedule,” said Leach. “It’s a schedule that should allow us to have some success. It will allow us to focus on us, but our nonconference games will prepare us for league games.” The Atlantic Sun Conference has undergone some changes since the end of last season with the addition of Old Dominion, Mercer and Furman, while Elon departs. Stetson begins A-Sun play at Howard on March 27. “Every game will help us improve,” said Leach. “We don’t want to plateau in our last game in February. March will be a very trying time for us with eight matches in the

month. It’s going to be a character-building month. We just want to keep improving in every game we play, so when we get to the conference tournament, we’re ready to make an impact.”

Men’s and Women’s Tennis Season Previews Pierre Pilote

The Stetson men’s and women’s tennis teams open their spring season in January, both in search of the same thing: an Atlantic Sun Conference championship. The women’s squad is talented and young, but, despite their youth, Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote has high hopes for the Hatters. Freshmen Alizee Michaud, Ashley Dean and Arijana Korac spent the fall tournament season playing a significant role in Stetson’s success. Michaud regularly played as Stetson’s No. 1 singles player, while Dean and Korac played anywhere from two through five. Oregon transfer sophomore Maja Salibasic will also be a factor. Junior Eveline Lepinay and senior Rachel Luke are the team captains for this season. While the Hatters will need Lepinay’s leadership, her on-court performance will also be vital. Lepinay went 8-2 during the fall, winning the B Draw championship at the Wake Forest Invitational in September. She also reached the semifinals at the ITA Southeast Regional in October.

HATTERS EXTRA

Sophomores Carolina Meregalli and Isabella Fernandez will also be an important part of Stetson’s spring fortunes. The women open the spring season on Jan. 24 against Troy at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. On the men’s side, associate head coach Christophe Noblet has the Hatters primed for a run at the A-Sun title. The men return six letter winners from last season, and feature a pair of newcomers as well. Seniors Nathan Debut and Chester Espie will lead the way for the Hatters. They will be joined by juniors Laurynas Antropikas, Gonzalo Arroyo and Simon Julin. Sophomore Graham Ball, who enjoyed an excellent fall season, rounds out the list of returning players. Ball won his flight at the Bedford Cup in September. Freshmen Loic Blanco and Kevin Gonzalez provide the Hatters with depth and a glimpse of the future. The men’s team opens play Jan. 16 at South Florida. Their first home match is slated for Feb. 1 against Florida Southern. The tennis schedules can be found on Page 23.

Babs Steffens Hatter Cup Set for March 9

Each year, fans and supporters of Stetson University’s women’s golf program gather at Victoria Hills Golf Club to kick off the Hatters’ spring push toward a conference title while, at the same time, raising money to help fund the program. This year, the Babs Steffens Hatter Cup will be played on Monday, March 9. The event is named in honor of one of the pioneers in women’s collegiate golf at Stetson University. Steffens, who also has an endowed scholarship in her name awarded annually to a member of the Stetson women’s golf team, wanted to continue her support of the program by sponsoring the Hatter Cup. This is the second year of her sponsorship of the tournament. “I have a passion for golf and a passion for Stetson,” Steffens said from her home in Palm Desert, California. “I could not have attended college had it not been for my golf scholarship. Stetson got me started on what has been a most fulfilling life.” After her playing days ended, Steffens has remained an advocate for the

women’s pro tour. Even though she is no longer able to travel like she would like, she is a fixture each year at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, which is one of five LPGA Major Championships and is played annually at the Mission Hills Golf Club in nearby Rancho Mirage, California. Steffens said she still gets enjoyment from the accomplishments of the Stetson women’s golf team. “I do follow the Stetson girls, especially my scholarship recipient every year,” Steffens said. “It really gives me a spark to be involved with the team.” Registration for the Babs Steffens Hatter Cup continues through Tuesday, March 3. The cost to play in the event is $100 per person, or $400 per team. Hole sponsorships are also available for as little as $100. Contact Stetson Women’s Golf coach Floyd Kerr at fkerr@stetson.edu or by calling 386-822-8137 for more information or to register for the 2015 Babs Steffens Hatter Cup.

Bernecker Named Student-Athlete of the Month

Carmen Bernecker Getting a 4.0 at Stetson University is no easy feat. Add in a double major and participation in a varsity sport and it’s nothing short of incredible. Now, consider that all of this was done with English as a second language and, well, that is Carmen Bernecker. A native of Holzmaden, Germany, Bernecker came to the U.S. and to Stetson to join the women’s soccer team and get a degree in Spanish and International Studies. While the transition was tough and the language barrier often increased the difficulty level of her classes, she came with high expectations. “Getting a 4.0 is a goal of mine; I’m ambitious in school,” said Bernecker. “Since I was young, my mom has helped me to persevere and work hard for what I want to achieve. I learned that you have to take on challenges instead of running away from them. If you can do that, you will get good grades and succeed in life.” Women’s soccer head coach Manoj Khettry noticed Bernecker’s impressive mind, but was more interested in how she took things to heart.

HATTERS EXTRA

“If I could use a word to describe Carmen, it would be thoughtful,” said Khettry. “She lets ideas affect her. One of the things that has allowed her to grow so much is that she allows her ideas and her thoughts and her experiences to change her.” As a student, Bernecker has shown many of the same tendencies. Dr. Ana Eire, Spanish professor and advisor to the Madrid study-abroad program, said Bernecker not only stands out in her classroom this semester, but among all of the students she’s taught at Stetson. “Carmen is truly extraordinary,” said Eire. “I have been teaching at Stetson for many years, and I can honestly say she is one of the best students I have ever had. She is just outstanding in every way. Her Spanish is excellent, as is her work ethic.” While she has made it look effortless, Bernecker attributes her success to the support of those around her. “I want to thank all the people that have helped me along the way. My coaches have made me a better player and person. Without my friends and family, I wouldn’t have made it this far in life. I’m just very lucky.”
