We purchased Jetla as a bred heifer in January of 2009 and she has become one of our favorite cows. Back when we bought her, she had a lot of similarities to her daughter “Pleasure” here. These similar traits include long, deep bodies with a long dairy neck and great feet & legs. There is one major difference in the two though...you see, “Pleasure” is POLLED! Yep, NO HORNS-NEW & IMPROVED! She is due in January to Eraser P, so there could be a HOMOZYGOUS POLLED grand-daughter of Jetla in our future. That would surely spell “special” in any language! David & Anne Kulp at the DairyBullsOnline Booth at World Dairy Expo 2013 Kulp-Dale Farm / Kulp Genetics is located in the heart of Lancaster County in Manheim, Pennsylvania. David and Anne Kulp and family are the fourth generation on the farm. The Kulps are currently breeding Polled Holsteins, Red & Whites, Milking Shorthorns, Brown Swiss and Jerseys. Dr. Anne Kulp has an embryo transfer business and performs ET and in-vitro transfers on their own cattle as well as for clients. Their first Polled purchase was Golden Oaks Rdmn Rae2-Red-P-ET, a Polled Redman heifer from the Roxys. The Kulps purchased Rae2 because the Polled genetics were appealing as something different to market and Rae2 had a really good pedigree to boot. Her dam had been sold 3 times for over $20,000 each time. The fact that she was RED was icing on the cake! Rae2 recently turned eight years old and went Excellent at her last classification. The Kulps flushed Rae2 multiple times as a heifer and in subsequent lactations creating many polled offspring. Probably the most valuable daughter of Rae2 was Kulp-Dale Gold Rush-PET*RC, a Polled, Red Carrier Goldwyn that was the dam of Kulp Dale Golden-PP-Red. DairyBullsOnline leased the bull and semen is still available. He

was one of the first Red & White Homozygous Polled bulls on the market. David’s philosophy on breeding Polled is to try to make Homozygous Polled animals or higher genomic Polled females. Currently there are Ladd P, Overtime P, Transformer P, Shanosber P, Long P, Earnhardt P, and Ohio Style P Polled and Homozygous Polled heifers on the farm. Recent flushes have been sired by Eraser P and Home Run P. Although in the last five years there has gotten to be more Polled semen available, David would like to see more Red & White Polled bulls with higher milk production available. Many Polled animals have been bred using the Polled bulls on the top cow families in the breed. Hopefully this trend will continue to shape the future, as the Kulps see the future being POLLED. Breeding Polled genetics has proven to be a niche market that has been a challenging and exciting ride for the Kulps. POLLED JERSEYS Huffard Dairy Farms Virginia, USA

Huffard Dairy Farms is located in the southwest mountains of Virginia. James and his brother John and son Trey operate the farm along with several longtime employees. In the late 1990’s, they purchased a Polled heifer that proved to be a great brood cow. They had been using some Polled genetics along, but there were no really good Polled production bulls available. This cow produced a good bull, Fairway Topkick Deacon-P, which had a major influence in their herd as a Polled production bull. They have continued to try and incorporate the Polled gene on some of our other good cow families. Huffard’s breeding philosophy is for production and sound functional type. They try to infuse the Polled gene whenever possible without sacrificing profitability. Along with the Dally family, the Chill family is a leading source for Polled in the herd today. This family produced Schultz Legal Critic-P which is the number one daughter proven Polled bull in AI. Not only is he Polled with good production, he is the highest JUI (udders) bull in the top 40 bulls in AI today. They are using him on some other good cow families along with some of his best genomic sons now available. Critic-P, his sons and some of the higher genomic Polled young sires are currently used along with other top bulls in their herd. The availability of good Polled bulls continues to increase in the Jersey breed. Eclipes-P and Deacon-P were a few of the earlier Polled bulls making a significant contribution to their Polled program. “Polled will increase in popularity and acceptance. The availability of high production Polled bulls will be the key to rapidly increasing the Polled presence in the breed. Most breeders use genetics that will increase the profitability of their herds and many, I think, would like to eliminate dehorning at the same time,“ shares Huffard.

About Sea Breeze Holsteins Sea Breeze Holsteins was founded in 1960 by Frank & Carol Condon with the first animals registered under Sea Breeze Holsteins prefix in 1963. The farm is located at Gerroa on the New South Wales South Coast of Australia about a two hour drive from Sydney. The farm has a very picturesque setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Seven Mile Beach. Hence the main reason behind the naming of the farm and the prefix Sea Breeze Holsteins. The farm is operated by the Condon Family with Frank & Carol Condon and son Paul & wife Maxine. Paul is a 5th generation dairy farmer. The farm is 100 acres in size with a 50 acre block on the other side of town with another 100 acres leased nearby. They are currently milking 120 registered Holsteins. The farm is all dry land pasture based. With a relatively good rainfall and fertile red volcanic soils. The cows are milked all year round in a modern DeLaval double-8 herringbone parlor. Quality Cows Produce Quality Milk “Our main mission statement at Sea Breeze is, “We breed Quality Cows to produce Quality Milk.” To obtain these goals we start with breeding good cows. Strong cow families are very important. Our breeding goals are first and foremost udders; well attached good teat placement, then a good set of feet & legs, longevity, strength and very importantly, positive milk and components,” adds Paul Condon. “Some of our most successful cow families that go back to our foundation stock are the Folkje, Charm, Hague, Daphne, Star, Moya and May families. With the lack of choice in Polled Holstein bulls at the early stage in Australia, I contacted Bryan Quanbury from DairyBullsOnline wanting to know if and when their Polled bulls would become available in Australia. He informed me that something was happening soon. It was at this stage that Matt Seeliger formed Pole Position Genetics and started to import and market Polled genetics in Australia. So thankfully, this enabled me to access some of the better Polled genetics of which some of the first progeny of this shipment are starting to hit the ground. With my first Kulpdale Golden PP-Red daughters arriving and with some luck, my first Red Holstein. One thing that will become a unique part of our business at Sea Breeze is our heifer sales. Registered Holstein heifers are an integral part of our business. With this in mind, in the near future will we be in the position to offer the buyers the best Polled pedigrees available at Sea Breeze. Which is an exiting prospect! Now things have moved fairly quickly in two years with the availability of Polled genetics. AI companies have more Polled bulls to offer. Some progeny on the ground at Sea Breeze are

So as you can see, we have taken up Polled with a purpose! Bright Future with Polled My main aim is to breed the Polled gene into all of our cow families and we are well on the way with all but two families already having Polled progeny on the ground. All this in only two years. I think the future of Polled genetics is only positive. Polled Testing
There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf POLLED. #PolledPromoters Walter & Doug Schultz by Stephanie Stout
There are many great #PolledPromoters today, but there weren’t as many out there in the 1940’s. Walter Schultz of Nicollet, Minnesota was the true definition of a #PolledPromoter! He shared his passion for Polled with everyone including his son, Doug who still lives on the home farm. Although there are not Polled animals at the farm today, the presence of Polled lives on in the many scrapbooks and posters that have promoted Polled over the years. “A picture is worth a thousand words,” so I would like to share Walter & Doug Schultz’s Polled promotion story with you by using their photos, speeches and articles.
Walter Schultz was the President and Founder of the National Polled Cattle Promotion Club. He said his main goal in life is to “promote breeding the horns off the largest strain of cattle in the world, and that’s Holsteins.” His inspiration in breeding Polled cattle came in 1926 from a horned heifer that he was getting ready for the 4-H show at state fair. The horned heifer tossed her head and caught Walter above the eye and knocked him out. He then vowed that when he had his own farm, he would have cattle with no horns. She was bred to horned bulls to create Polled calves. Pictured here is “Old Muley” with Walter’s son Doug (Age 4 1/2 at the time). Doug continued sharing Walter’s passion for Polled and recently shared at the Nicollet County Holstein Meeting that, “The Polled movement is a sleeping giant that’s awakening.” My favorite quote from Doug is, “The best time to dehorn is at conception!” Listed here and on the next page are some of the Polled promotional material that Doug has used over the years along with one of his speeches.
The Cutting Edge of Polled Technology Dairymen who use bulls that sire Polled calves are putting themselves instead of their calves on the cutting edge of technology. It is time for more breeders to adopt a kinder method of dehorning: Using breeding instead of cutting or burning technology. My dad, Walter, told me many times, “If you want to work with cattle, you should be at least as smart as they are.” I sometimes felt insulted, but his point did sink in. Most people prefer to work with docile and hornless cattle. In order to accomplish this, they must put the animal through a traumatic event of dehorning. The animal is left with open bleeding wounds or burn scars for some time after and usually goes off feed for a period of time. Even when healed, the animal can be hard to handle and difficult to confine for a long period of time. Any work around the head - - ear tagging, head clipping, etc. - - can be difficult since the animal’s disposition has been perhaps permanently changed. The Polled concept is pure and simple. If you want docile and thrifty cattle: Breed the horns off rather than cut, saw or burn them off. Horns are an undesirable trait that are being eliminated in the gene pool of some beef breeds. The Polled gene is dominant and I think someday, Polled cattle will dominate.
