A Focus on International POLLED
Gubelmann Brown Swiss - Stefan Gubelmann - Walton, Ontario, Canada My wife Rita, our children Katrina 14, Courtney 13, Simon 12, my parents Ernst and Yolanda and myself (Stefan) own and operate Gubelmann Brown Swiss in Walton, Ontario, Canada. We have a 64 cow tie-stall barn, and milk 100% Registered Brown Swiss. Our current classification is 22EX 38VG 10GP (the GP are all 2 year olds). Our herd averages around 12,000kg 4.2% fat 3.6% protein in 305 days. We had 10 cows produce over 80,000kg milk lifetime production in 2018, two of which cleared 100,000kg. We have had the highest production herd in our county many times over the last 15 years over all breeds, as well as highest production in Ontario in 15 of the last 22 years in the Brown Swiss breed. Our herd has the highest herd average LPI index of all Brown Swiss herds in Canada. I have been interested in Polled since the Oaklot Dispersal in 1997 where I purchased a horned granddaughter of Meadow View King Ronnie NP, the dam of Meadow View Rendition NP, the foundation sire of the Polled Brown Swiss population in Germany. Our breeding philosophy for Polled is the same as horned, we look to breed cows that can produce lots of high component milk for many years to pay the bills. To do so, we look for bulls with high fat kg and %, protein kg and %, mammary system, feet and legs and low SCC. I bred the first cows to a Polled bull from Germany called Promo-P in 2012, resulting in two Polled heifer calves and a Polled bull. Both cows are still milking - Gubelman Polled Dice P VG85 is currently dry after a finishing her 3rd record at 3-10 305 day record of 14,556kg milk 4.0%fat 3.5% protein (365days 36,599lbs of milk 1475 fat 1314 protein), Gubelman Polled Diamond P was sold to another farm fresh in her 2nd lactation and is currently in her 4th lactation. Gubelman Promo Dimes-P NP was purchased by Select Sires after we used him a bit here first. We currently have six Polled heifers in the top 60 gPALPI heifers in Canada. Our first Polled cow, Diamond P, was the dam of Gubelman SSB Devon P VG88 3 year old EX90 MS, the #1 gLPI cow of the previous two proof rounds in Canada (pictured right). From the Gubelman Gordon Dora VG87 128,000kg 4.4% fat 3.8% protein life time production (All Canadian 3 year old 2002) family, we currently have Dice P and her daughters Gubelman Purpur Hanna P (#57 gPALPI @1794) and Gubelman Biver Heidi P VG85 1-10 305d 9,529kg 4.2%F 3.7%P as well as Heidi P’s daughters Gubelman Dynamite Hazel P (#58 gPALPI @1792) and Gubelman Assay Hope P (#30 gPALPI @1885). Gubelman SSB Devon P's daughters, Gubelman Cadence Diligence P (gPALPI @2385) and Gubelman Falco Dorina P (gPALPI @2286), are the #1 and #2 gPALPI heifers in the breed. Gubelman Dimes P Arielle P VG85 2-09 303 days 10,785kg 4.6%F 4.1%P and her daughter Gubelman Cadence Alana P

(#17 gPALPI @1977). Arielle P was the first Polled Brown Swiss exhibited at a show in Canada, when we took her to Kincardine Fair as a junior calf in 2015. Alana P did very well as a 4-H calf last year, always placing in the top 4 in both Brown Swiss shows and all breeds 4-H shows. We also have Polled heifers out of the Gentle Breeze Matt Christine EX-3E(All American 4 year old 1987) family and the Gubelman Earnest T Willow EX942E (All Canadian Mature cow 2005) family. We have daughters in our herd from Promo P, Canadian P, Viper P, Van P, Car P, and Dimes P. Currently, we are using Vipro P, Vision P, Vivaldi P, Vipster P, Sax P, Kade NP, and Victor P. Many of the Polled bulls today fit our breeding strategy, but they are all still genomic bulls that need to prove themselves first before we use too many doses of one bull. When these genomic Polled bulls available today are able to hold their numbers and turn into reliable proven Polled bulls with high fat and protein kg and %, great feet and legs and udders with low SCC. The challenge will be to breed top end Homozygous Polled bulls before AI companies are allowed to use genetic modifications to get there. Using GM in cattle breeding will eliminate the cattle breeders as we know them today! Polled is just starting to come up, yet we already have breed leaders that are Polled. It is just a matter of time before Polled hits mainstream Brown Swiss breeding. Our Gubelman SSB Devon P VG88 3 year old EX90 MS was the #1 gLPI cow the previous two proof rounds. She is the complete package - high index, high production, great type and low SCC. Both of her daughters are already following in her footsteps as the #1 and #2 gPALPI heifers in Canada!

Holterholm Farms - Ron Holter - Maryland Farm Background Holterholm Farms is located in the rolling hills of central Maryland. We are about 40 miles northwest of Washington, DC. The farm has been in our family since 1889 and I am the fifth generation to own and operate the farm. My son, Adam, my wife, Kathy, and I are in partnership in Holterholm Farms, LLC with Adam and I taking care of the daily business of farming. In 1995, we converted our confinement herd of registered Holsteins to a grazing program, and in 1998 we went spring seasonal with our calving. After selling the half of our cows due in the fall and winter, we purchased registered Jerseys to replace them. We soon found that the Jerseys far exceeded the Holsteins in grazing ability and breed-back and by 2002, we were all Jersey. We certified organic in 2005 and stopped feeding grain in 2007. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? We have been breeding for Polled since the early 2000s. As soon as we purchased Jerseys, we began to breed to New Zealand sires to improve the grazing ability of our cows. After a couple of generations, we wanted to add some more strength into our cattle and found out about the Northcoast Group from Ohio whose breeding philosophy was to breed a trouble free cow living to 15 years giving 15 times her body weight in milk yearly with high butterfat and Polled heads. They relied heavily on aAa and breeding with balanced bulls from great maternal lines of long-lived cows. I also liked the fact that I didn’t have to dehorn calves, which was one of my least liked tasks on the farm. What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? We have developed a herd of beautifully adapted grazing Jerseys that are Polled and have great dairy strength and capacity. We are line breeding to develop Homozygous Polled grazing genetics with high butterfat and longevity. Beledene Dukes Landy is the sire that we are line breeding with even though he was a horned bull. He is considered to be the bull with the best grazing abilities from New Zealand that has been used in the USA to date. We have developed a sire line from Landy with Polled heads and now seeing some Homozygous sires coming along.
cow was Ray-mar CRW Marylou 53-P (bottom left). She was a cow that we purchased in 1997 when we purchased our first Jerseys. I didn't know that she was Polled, so when she had her first calf and there were no horn buds, I called US Jersey to find out what this could be. As it turned out, Marylou-P lived to be 17 years old and really taught me a lot about Jerseys and their durability. The majority of our herd of 150 cows traces back to this great cow. What cow families are you breeding Polled into? We are breeding Polled into every cow family on the farm. Over 60% of our mature cows are Polled and over 80% of the calves born in 2018 were Polled. What Polled bulls are represented in your herd? The greatest influence is by Holterholm Lieutenant-P (left), a son of JPR Sunarchus-P from the Northcoast Group and a Landy daughter who is a great-granddaughter of Marylou-P. We have many young daughters of Holterholm Landy 21st-P Blackjack (below) who traces twice to Landy and has Marylou-P as his fifth dam on his sire’s side. What Polled bulls are you currently using? We are currently using only our own Polled bulls. The bull that is generating the most excitement is Holterholm Lou-P who is a Homozygous Polled, A2A2 Lieutenant-P son out of Marylou-P’s 13 year old daughter. Lou-P’s aAa is 426 which works well on many of our cows. We are also using two Polled Landy sons out of Lieutenant-P dams and Blackjack-P is still being used lightly as well. continued on page 7

I think that there are very good Polled bulls available that will help improve cows and farms much more than high index sires. We just have the wrong mindset in sire selection. We, as farmers, have been brainwashed into thinking that indexes should be the main criteria in sire selection when longevity, efficiency, reproduction, and health will profit us more than mere numbers.

What would you like to see available in the future? I would really like to see daughter to dam indexes come back in some way. Our index system, and now genomics, are ruining dairy cattle. Sires should be chosen only from cows with at least 5 lactations, that have calved every year, mated to bulls that will work well on the cow. Where do you see the future of Polled in your breed? In the Jersey breed, I see Polled becoming much more popular as labor and animal welfare become even more important to selling milk. Polled genetics are being discussed more and more all the time in livestock journals. However, I must admit that I love to see the 50 to 100 year old photos of the Jersey show cows with the beautifully trained horns adorned with chains.

Polled Testing There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf POLLED. One copy of Polled-Celtic and 1 copy of Polled-Friesian molecular markers are present. All offspring will be polled.
