Breeder Perspectives on POLLED This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to Terri Lawton for sharing your Polled story and views on the future of Polled Ayrshires! POLLED AYRSHIRES Oake Knoll Ayrshires Terri Lawton Foxboro, Massachusetts

Terri Lawton with her first Polled cow CR-Farm Pluto Hallelujah at a milking deomonstration

Farm Background During the past 11 years, our 275 year old family farm has developed a market for fluid milk, beef, veal and cheeses from our herd of 24 grass-fed milking Ayrshires. There are several components to the farm: milk production and animal care, cheese making, on-farm marketing and farmers markets. My parents, Ed and Nancy, manage day-to-day operations with 6 employees. I switched the herd from Holstiens to 100 percent Ayrshires about 8 years ago. Our customers say they prefer the taste of the Ayrshire milk, they find it easier to drink than other breeds. Ayrshire milk is highly sought after by artisan cheese makers because it has a higher yield and produces a higher quality cheese. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? I've been breeding Polled cows since 2010, but started to take it more seriously when I learned about CR-Farm Julio's Nerissa EX-91-2E. She is a Polled cow with more than 28,000 lbs. of milk in 305 days. She has made more than 173,000 lbs. of milk lifetime and her sons are producing milky, balanced daughters with excellent rumps and nice udders. Her pedigree is top notch. She combines some of the best breeding from Master Breeder Doug Shores and long-time Ayrshire breeder Lin Huntington. These two cowmen have been inspirational to me as cattle breeders. What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? We want to produce Polled, purebred, even tempered Ayrshire cows that can consistently milk more than 20,000 lbs. of 4% fat and protein and score over 85 pts as 2 year olds and breed purebred A2A2 Ayrshire bulls that sire daughters who out produce and out score their dams.

8 #PolledPlace

Who was your first Polled cow? My first polled cow was CR-Farm Pluto Hallelujah, who I bought as a bred heifer through the New England Quality Ayrshire Sale. She goes back to Sweet-Pepper Magic Hannabell EX-91, who was sired by Bonnie Brae Magic and bred by Craig Hawklsey. I'm not sure there are any other Polled cows that go back to Bonnie Brae Magic. Craig has one of the highest quality herds of any breed, and he has been very generous with helping me learn to think about selecting bulls and cows for my breeding program. Hallelujah's daughter, CR-Farm Ansel Honor was born a couple months after I purchased her dam, and when I noticed she was Polled, I was excited, but I was more excited when she scored EX-90 last October. I consider her a complete cow. She has lactations more than +1000 lbs. of 4.6% milk over herd mates, is easy to work with and has a very unique pedigree. She is at Kline Dell's donor housing in Meyerstown, Pennsylvania for this lactation. What cow families are you breeding Polled into? What do you have for Polled animals? We want to produce quality Polled animals from a variety of quality cow families, with different Polled bulls. I've been very fortunate to have many good cowmen teach me about good cow families and let me buy into some of the best in the breed. We are excited to have recently purchased CR-Farm Julio's Nerissa EX-91-2E, with lifetime production over 173,000 lbs. of milk. She is currently housed at Kline Dell's donor housing with CR-Farm Ansel Honor 90. The Klines are helping us to further develop these cows and meet international demand for high quality, A2A2, Polled Ayrshire genetics. We are also using Polled bulls on Wilshore Foxy Broxy VG-88, whose sire is a full brother to Hawksfield Bronara EX-94-4E, with 352,302 lbs. of 4.3% fat lifetime. Foxy comes from one of Master Breeder Doug Shores' best cow families, which produce quality cows generation after generation. Foxy was #53 on the Elite List in 2010. Her first daughter spent time on the Elite List, and another daughter scored VG-87 at 3-11. We recently got a Polled son from Foxy by Neville, for which we are waiting for milk casein test results. We bred the 2015 Eastern National Champion Ayrshire, Oake Knoll Burdette's Hideaway EX-90 at 3-10 and have been working with her owners to get pregnancies from her to Neville, one of Nerissa's Polled sons. We've also been working to get pregnancies from Legacy-Lane Avenger Jezabel EX-92-2E, Sunny Acres Modem Brinley EX-91-3E (also on the top 100 CPI List for 1.5 years) among other high quality Ayrshire cows to Nerissa's Polled sons. We would like to breed high quality Polled purebred Ayrshires from as many different cow families as possible. What Polled bulls are represented in your herd? Our Polled cows get their Polled gene from Bonnie Brae Magic and Otter Creek Count Lanser. continued on page 10

What Polled bulls are you currently using? Currently, we are using CR-Farm Santa's Neville, Hawksfield Justice P, Hawksfield Benedict P, Au Master Copy Major PP, Hawksfield Master Copy P, Hawksfield DoneDeal P and Hawksfield Great Adventure P.

Breeder Perspectives on POLLED Where do you see the future of Polled in your breed? I'm really excited about my Polled cows and their role in the breed. The Polled gene has real economic value, and there are some Polled cows and bulls available from outstanding cow families.

What are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls? There are a few good quality Polled cows available, and making more is one of my top priorities. Producing A2A2 Polled bulls that transmit quality genetics is another priority for me. I've been in the niche retail dairy business for more than 10 years, and it is a viable market for Polled genetics. It makes sense to focus on Ayrshires because they excel in the niche dairy markets. It is the best breed for the retail dairy sales and milk from Polled A2A2 cows already has marketing advantages, but because of the small cow population, semen distribution is probably a limiting factor. However, the beef industry thrives on private semen sales, and I think the Polled industry can too. What would you like to see available in the future? I would like to see more breeders using quality Polled bulls. We need to be using Polled bulls that improve our cows and their marketability.

POLLED GENETICS - UNLOCK YOUR POTENTIAL FOR A BETTER FUTURE!

#PolledPassport

A Focus on International Polled

Allstar Holsteins & Brown Swiss - Kevin Thomas - United Kingdom

Gellifelen Farm is located in South West Wales, in the Unuted Kingdom. It is run by myself with occasional paid help and the larger machinery work (foraging, slurry spreading, etc.) being carried out by contractors. In 2009, two Fullwood Merlin automatic milkers were installed and in late 2010, the 160 cow herd constantly had 120 animals in milk. They were yielding an average 31 kgs. (68.2 lbs.) and achieving 2.8 milkings per day. This was using grazing in daylight hours and housed with a PMR at night. An average yield of 35+ kgs. (77+ lbs.) was expected through the winter at over 3 milkings per day when they would be constantly housed. I spent many years using the old “breed for type, feed for production” adage, but came to realize that herds using high index sires were achieving higher and higher yields. Not prepared to sacrifice type for production I stopped using sires for the show ring and concentrated on sires which were reasonably high on type, but could also supply the higher yields. I always look for good udders, especially rear ligament, height and width. Good feet and legs are a must and wherever possible a deep and open rib. I avoid high pins and am willing to make allowances elsewhere. Cow families are very important so I use sexed semen on anything good enough to rear a calf from and use beef bulls on the rest. I use a conventional straw on something that won’t hold to sexed after a few attempts. I think any proper breeding program is unique to that individual if they are willing to put the time into researching sires and cow families. Maybe “different” would be a better word. What makes my breeding program different? My end goal is probably similar to many others, it’s the route which differs. Take care not to try to be too different, “I took the road less travelled.....and now I’m lost!!!”  I’ve probably used the odd Polled sire many times over the years, but finding a good enough bull was difficult. It has played a more prominent part in my program over the last 5 to 6 years in that I am always looking for a good Polled sire first. What inspired me to start breeding for Polled? For the same reason that I have used a lot of Red in my Holstein breeding, I believed there was a market for it. If you can supply what the market wants then you have the opportunity for profit. Don’t breed for the show ring, breed for the sale ring. With Polled, when you have good enough Polled sires you can then remove one job from your weekly routine.

Using Heterozygous Polled bulls meant that you had the lovely feeling of getting Polled heifer calves from your best cow families, but it also left you with horned calves and these calves would probably have been better quality calves had you used the best horned sires. For this reason I decided to focus on Homozygous Polled sires. If there wasn’t a Homozygous Polled bull, sexed and good enough to use then I would use horned. With genomics moving Polled forward so quickly, every proof run brought us closer to the right bull and after using Ems Red from the Frosty family, for 12 months now I have been using Basist from Switzerland on my Holsteins, both are Red and Homozygous Polled with high type and high production. Another bull will show up soon, but until then, I continue to use the current bull if he is good enough. Like this EVERY heifer calf is Polled. I used Vasient on my Brown Swiss, he was the first Polled Swiss with figures which I could accept and the calves look good. His sons are looking even better and I believe we are close to a good Homozygous Polled Swiss, most likely from Germany or Switzerland. Germany has been focusing on Polled for some time and Spermex have the Vasient son Vasan PP already Homozygous Polled and sexed. Switzerland saw the market a few years ago and immediately used Polled on some of their best cows. Just watch that space every proof run, it’s what I do. Current families I am working with in the Holsteins, I like the Renitas, based on a VG-88 Talent from an EX Rubens from Stelbro Renita Ranger-Red EX-94. There is a VG-88 Baxter from the Elegance family with 10 EX behind her from Krulls. Another Red family is the Liberty family with lots of EX and 2 Polled heifers by Basist born recently. In the Brown Swiss there are Jola, Snickerdoodle, Acqua, R Hart Christine, Top Acres B family (same family as Payssli), Victoria (Vigor), Fantasy Vix, etc. I use sexed semen on all the best families so expanding them nowadays is easier. Looking to the future, I expect to be moving farms later this year so some things are uncertain, but I hope to be able to continue doing what I enjoy, working with these cows.

Polled Testing There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED.
