But there still exist a number of borders, which are a stumbling block for travellers, moving from one country to another. The idea of removing these barriers may seem shocking to some people, but…. Just imagine travelling around the world without any restraint, staying where you want to, and following your heart while choosing where to live! Fortunately there are some things which transcend the migration laws and customs rules. Creative activity, music, literature, fashion…And these roads are endless. Albert Camus wisely considered travelling to be the greatest and most serious science, which helps us find ourselves. The Island of VIP shopping: Louis Vuitton Maison The creative director of Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, and one of the most fashionable designers, Peter Marino, created a heavenly place for fans of this high-end famous brand. In the center of Singapore next to Marina bay Sands, you can see a building which may remind you of an ocean liner, surrounded by water. The architects chose to construct it from steel and glass. The boutique has become the biggest shopping center of the brand in the Asian region. On the territory of the island-boutique there is also a gallery of modern art. Lots of events devoted to modern culture are to be held there. After passing through the gallery you arrive at the Louis Vuitton bookshop, where you can buy books on design, art and culture. Within the walls of the boutique, there are numerous halls for various festive and ceremonial events.

Islands of miracles in Dubai The Palm Jumeirah in Dubai is the first, large-scale project of creating artificial islands. Skiing 900 km across Antarctica to the Terrestrial South Pole – this was the itinerary of Stephanie Solomonides, a member of the Kaspersky Lab Commonwealth Antarctic Expedition in 2009. The 25 year old Stephanie was the first Cypriot to have stepped onto the continent of Antarctica. With a lifetime challenge fulfilled, Stephanie moved to London where she currently works in banking. But the endless energy pushes her forward. “I’d love to climb Kilimanjaro, she says. It would be a huge challenge for me as I am afraid of heights”. This is just a part of her plans though, with an expedition across Greenland, winter camping on Lake Baikal in Russia and hiking in Alaska being amongst them. 5 essentials for a trip: 1. Passport. 2. iPod. It provides a soundtrack to my travels, which is a great way to revisit memories at a later date. 3. Camera. My trusty Panasonic Lumix has a quick shutter speed, which is a very handy feature, especially in Antarctica. 4. Map. Even though mobile phone tech nology is so advanced now, the battery can always run out and leave you stranded. 5. Swimsuit. You never know when a swim might seem like a good idea! 44 | S

Everyday he searches for solutions to give the correct answers to what may seem like hopeless situations to others. Sometimes, however, this world of numbers, analysis and business transforms into something entirely different. Business consultant Vasiliy Hlobystov, prefers to engage in active leisure pursuits, although these activities contradict his image of starched shirts and reports in leather portfolios. “There is certain energy in these life projects. It keeps pushing me further. It is in moments like these that you don’t pretend to be someone you are not. On a hike you cannot think about anything but hiking. All your problems and wicked thoughts fade away”, –Vasiliy tells Status.

After leaving Russia in 2010, Olga Voronaya has lived in Ecuador for a year and a half, in Uruguay for five months and in Brazil for three months. She has travelled over Peru, Bolivia and Argentina; she is exploring Chile now, with Columbia being the next planned destination. “On the one hand I would like to settle down and have my own cozy living place. But how can you find such place, when you have seen so little? Well, I’m still on the way”, – she confessed. 5 essentials for a trip 1. Laptop. For communication, work, pastime, information, planning. It would be impossible for me to travel without it. 2. Camera. My old Canon 400D has always been my faithful companion in my travels. It withstood the salty sprays of the Caribbean Sea, the hot wind of the Nazca desert and the burning cold of Tierra del Fuego. 3. Driving license. Nothing is better than travelling by car. For the time being though, I don’t rent a car very often. 4. Vacuum bags. They are really convenient for packing things and saving space. 5. A coffee making set. A cezve (Turkish coffee pot), ground coffee, a collection of field spices and a tourist gas burner. No matter where I wake up, I know that I will enjoy my coffee in the morning. ‘‘Five Fingers” of Astana The world’s capitals can migrate like people. This was the one and only shift of capitals in the post-Soviet countries. The capital of Kazakhstan was shifted from Almaty to Astana on the 10th of December 1997. Astana was initially known as Akmolinsk, then as Tselinograd, later on as Akmola. Here, on the right bank of Ishim River lies the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation. The building resembles a pyramid and is conceived as a global center for religious studies and tolerance. There is a concert hall inside, as well as multiple art galleries. One can try the national dish of Beshbarmak in Astana. The term Beshbarmak means “five fingers” when translated from the Turkic languages. The nomadic peoples of steppes, ancestors of modern Kazakhstani, did not know the cutlery and ate with their bare hands, or, more accurately, with fingers. The dish is essentially boiled meat mixed with noodles. Everything is diced in thin slices and… If you know the secret, then you can claim to know Astana like you know your own five fingers.

Don’t rush into such conclusions after you have visited the most popular places of interest described in the guide books. I am sure there are lots of fantastic places yet to be discovered, those which will excite and intrigue you with their historical background. The Venetian Walls of Nicosia are one of the top attractions. The Medieval Period, when the island was under the rule of the city state of Venice, left a unique imprint on the history of Cyprus. This fabulous and breathtakingly beautiful city on the water became a symbol of power and wealth in the medieval times, conquering many other Mediterranean countries. The Venetian rule of Cyprus did not last long – only 80 years. It began after the abdication of the last Queen of Cyprus Caterina Cornaro, when Cyprus came under the jurisdiction of the Venetian Republic of St.Mark. Caterina was born in Venice and crowned in Famagusta in 1472. However, long before that she had been engaged by proxy to the Frankish King of Cyprus James II de Lusignan, otherwise known as James the Bastard. They had been married for about a year when James II died suddenly. Only two months later, Caterina gave birth to the heir to the throne and began to act as regent. The baby did not survive even a year, and after his death, Caterina became the ruling Queen of Cyprus, and reigned until 1489. In 1489 she ceded her realm to Venice and returned with great honors to her native country.

Cyprus Department of Forests has created a “path of Venetian bridges”. It is 17 km long and covers part of the former camel road “Kamilostrata”. You can travel there on foot, by bike, by horse or quad bikes. Of course you may go by car, but your trip will not be as unforgettable and impressive. When in Rome, do as the Romans do
The Venetians bent over backwards to stay on the island as long as they could. Watchtowers were built everywhere, some of them are well preserved even today. By the end of their rule, the Venetians had completed the Venetian Wall in Nicosia to protect the city from invaders. At the same time the mountain regions of Cyprus witnessed a massive looting of natural resources. Camels were used to carry copper ore to the sea, following the so called camel route “Kamilostrata”. Caravans were huge, utilizing up to half a hundred camels each. On the way to the sea, camels had to cross mountain rivers, which were much deeper at that time, and so crossing became a real challenge. Thus Venetians had to build several bridges. Those bridges, with their curved arcs, reminiscent of a cat’s back, were too grand for the forest and mountain wilderness, but nevertheless they excelled at their task.

Today, after five centuries we can still admire these well-preserved bridges. The building skills of Venetians were really magnificent, and the bridges withstood earthquakes and the test of time. It should be noted that at that time wooden bridges were also built above the canals in Venice, but were quite often burned or ruined by nature. As the longer-lasting stone bridges appeared much later, the bridges in Cyprus maybe even more ancient than those in Venice!
Where to find the Venetian Bridges?
Unfortunately the guide books do not give much information about the Venetian bridges. Although there are three, which can be found quite close to each other in one of the Troodos regions. The smallest one, called Eleia, is situated halfway between Paphos and Nicosia, not far from the village of Foini. The Eleia bridge was built above the inflow of the Diarizos river. In hot seasons the water below it practically dries out. The Tzelefos bridge is 2-3 km away from Eleia. It is much bigger in size. The Diarizos river with its clear and swift waters flows under the arc of the bridge, which is 11 meters high. In winter the river is full flooded; but in summer, when the river dries out, it is possible to cross it by car. It’s such a pleasure to relax under the shade of the trees by the river even on hot sunny days. One can see small fish and fresh water crabs there. The Roudia bridge is definitely the hardest to get to. A very complicated road, running through the Turkish village Vretsia, leads up to it. The village is uninhabited as it was abandoned in 1974, during the military conflict. The Roudia bridge was built above the Xeros river, is considered to be the largest and most beautiful of all bridges. There is also a three arc Ana bridge not far from Peristerona, and another small bridge in Kalopanagiotis, not far from Nicosia, which deserve to be mentioned. Some Cypriots state that the total number of Venetian bridges on the island is 13. Why not take the opportunity to explore and enjoy? [S]

В тени деревьев возле воды приятно находиться даже в жаркие летние дни. До третьего моста Рудья добраться труднее всего. К нему ведет сложная, запутанная горная дорога, пролегающая через турецкую деревню Вретсия, покинутую жителями во время военного конфликта 1974 года. Мост Рудья стоит над руслом реки Ксерос. Считается, что он наиболее красивый и большой из всех названных выше. Кроме трех мостов известны также трехарочный мост Ана в Перистероне, недалеко от Никосии, и небольшой мостик в Калопанайотисе. The renowned Greek pianist and composer Yiannis Hryssomallis, or Yanni as he is known, performs all over the world delighting the crowds and filling stadiums and concert halls to capacity; his enraptured audience, embracing in their opportunity to enjoy his charming piano ballads. Yanni has more than 20 albums, 15 CD collections, several singles and a Grammy Award. During his last world tour, the pianist found time for an interview with Status magazine and told us a wonderful story about the world without borders and his love of the motherland.

You named your recent tour "World without Borders". What is the significance of this title to you?

One of the great advantages of having career in music is an opportunity to travel all around the world and come into contact with so many different cultures. Travelling gives you a fantastic chance to learn new things. From my own experience I can say that we are all the same throughout the world. The lines which separate different peoples are artificial. They do not really exist. This tour has been about going to many different countries and realizing that love for music has no geographical borders: we perceive the music in the same way and share the same emotions. This is something I always see in my listeners’ eyes.
Один из самых больших плюсов музыкальной карьеры – возможность путешествовать по миру и знакомиться с культурами разных стран. Во время путешествий узнаешь так много нового! Исходя из своего личного опыта, могу сказать, что люди из разных уголков планеты одинаковы. Те границы, что разделяют народы, были искусственно созданы, на самом деле они не существуют. Love for music has no geographical borders: we perceive the music in the same way and share the same emotions. This is something I always see in my listeners’ eyes.

You have an international team of Armenians, Japanese, Paraguayans… How does this affect your music? We have 11 different nationalities in the band. Each person brings in his or her very unique manner of performance, enriching our team with a part of the musical heritage and tradition of the respective musicians’ native country. When we all get together, we can learn from experiences from all over the world. This has made our orchestra very unique. When I first put the orchestra together, I was simply trying to find the best musicians anywhere in the world, and it happened to result in our little “United Nations” on stage.
You are a Greek national, living in the USA. Why did you leave your country? What values did you take from your homeland? I left Greece when I was in my late teens to study in the university in the United States. I graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in psychology. Of course I brought all my early life experiences with me and especially the lessons and the philosophies taught to me by my parents, who were very open-minded and supportive. When I came to America, I had to learn to understand the new culture I was living in and accommodate to the new environment. Now, as an adult person, I am still striving to learn something new, meet new cultures, during my travels. Books and movies alone cannot give you this knowledge; you must experience something by yourself. If you saw a safari on TV, it doesn’t mean you saw a lion. Thus, if the lion turns up next to you, your emotions and reaction will be quite different. You should never stop learning.
У вас интернациональная команда музыкантов – армяне, японцы, парагвайцы... Как это отражается на вашей музыке? В составе моей команды – представители 11 национальностей. Каждый привносит свою уникальную манеру исполнения и вместе с тем свою частичку мирового наследия. Когда мы собираемся вместе, то вбираем самое лучшее из опыта других стран. Именно это и сделало наш оркестр таким уникальным. Когда я впервые собрал всю команду, я постарался найти лучших в мире музыкантов, а в результате получилась такая маленькая «Организация Объединенных Наций» на сцене.
По национальности вы грек, но живете в США. Почему покинули Родину? Какие ценности взяли с собой? Будучи подростком, я поехал в США поступать в университет. Окончил Университет Миннесоты и получил диплом психолога. Естественно, весь мой предыдущий опыт жизни в Греции всегда был со мной, особенно те жизненные уроки, которые я усвоил от родителей. Они люди широких взглядов и всегда оказывали мне поддержку. Переехав в Америку, я начал постигать новую культуру и учиться жить в новой среде. Я продолжаю постигать новое и сейчас – нельзя все почерпнуть из книг или фильмов, что-то нужно испытать на себе. Если вы видели сафари по телевизору, это не значит, что вы видели льва. Вы испытываете ностальгию? Как справляетесь с ней? Я всегда был тесно связан со своей семьей и теми родными местами, откуда я родом. Я чувствую, что они – часть меня, и это дарит мне ощущение спокойствия и принадлежности на протяжении всей моей жизни.
Насколько нам известно, вы мечтали вернуться в Грецию и выступить в Акрополе. В 1993 году ваша мечта осуществилась. Какие чувства вы испытывали в тот момент? Это были невероятные ощущения. Было нелегко и очень волнительно по многим причинам. Я впервые играл перед моими родителями, возможно, именно это было самым трудным. Выступать на сцене и видеть среди зрителей собственную семью – потрясающий опыт! Самое сложное для артиста – это вернуться домой и играть на Родине.
Do you feel nostalgia? How do you overcome it?

I am always connected to my family and the place I come from. I feel that these elements are always inside of me and never leave me; therefore, I have always been able to enjoy a real sense of peace and belonging throughout my life.

You were said to have dreamt of returning to Greece and performing in the Acropolis. In 1993, you made this dream come true. What were your feelings at that moment? It was incredible. It was a very difficult concert to put on and it was very emotional to return home for many reasons. Perhaps the greatest anxiety was that I would be playing in front of my parents for the first time in my life. It was a wonderful experience to perform there and see my mother and father in the audience. Performing at home is always an artist’s toughest challenge. 84 | S

How would you describe your audience? Passionate. I feel a connection with my audiences; I understand that those who gather to listen to my music and I have many things in common. And it doesn’t matter which part of the world we perform in.
You also performed in Taj Mahal and the Imperial Palace in the Forbidden City in China. How did you realise such a great project? Both these events were the dreams I had had for a long time. It involved some real hard work and required quite a bit of faith and passion for these dreams to come true. There were many roadblocks that came up and we spent a lot of time navigating around them. If I didn’t have the passion and the focus, these events would

Your tour countries list doesn’t include Cyprus. Do you plan to visit the island?
I hope to perform in Cyprus one day. The main reason for not being able to visit all countries is because we have to adhere to the pre-planned tour schedule. There are many places that we have not yet performed, and I know we will visit them one day.
Do you think that a musician should have classical music education? I am really glad I have never studied music, because I have no idea what it should be like. Music, like water, may assume any form, there are no rules here. It is great to have a good teacher in the beginning. But one day he will leave and you will face the unknown. You have to create something new, something that nobody has done yet. I don’t think music schools can teach you that.
Have you ever been a street musician? No, but I had been a musician without money for some 15 years. I tried to survive playing with rock bands in small clubs. Ironically, rehearsing in the basements helped me develop my skills.
What does money mean to you? My father, who has, unfortunately, left this world, had a good answer to this question. He used to say: “If you feel unhappy with money, you will feel the same without it”. And my answer was: “If I am to be unhappy, I’d rather be unhappy with money”. Money is good, because you can help others with it. There is a huge gap today between the rich and the poor. This is wrong. We all live on a small planet, which is not getting any bigger, while the population is growing. This is why we have to learn how to coexist, to share, to love each other and to be tolerant.
Would you describe yourself as a citizen of the world? I am a very fortunate man to have the life that I do. I travel the world doing what I love to do most. I have met so many wonderful people, learned from so many amazing cultures. As I get older I realise how much I still have to learn. There could not have been a better life for me. [S]

Once the therapist touches your body with his soft, magic hands, covered with warm fragrant oils, you will immerse yourself into a world of relaxation for the next 60 minutes of pure bliss. Он же улучшает кровообращение, усиливает лимфоток и зашитную систему организма, и это далеко не все. На протяжении тысячелетий массаж использовался как часть врачебного искусства среди разных народностей и культур. Еще на заре развития цивилизации целители стали применять различные техники прикосновений - растирание, разминание, поглаживание, - для облегчения болей. Что неудивительно, ведь прикосновение – это инстинктивная реакция человека на раздражение и боль. Прикосновение успокаивает, несет тепло и неосознанное чувство безопасности. В зависимости от силы и интенсивности прикосновений появились различные техники массажа. Одни помогают в лечении хронических заболеваний и травм, другие призваны освободить тело от напряжения. За профессиональной консультацией по техникам массажа Status обратился к Анне Павловска, опытному спа-тренеру отеля Аматус в Лимасоле, которая рассказала, что нужно знать, записываясь на сеанс.

For thousands of years, massage has been part of medical art among various cultures and nationalities. As early as at the dawn of civilization healers began to resort to different techniques of contact with the body – rubbing, kneading and tapping – to reduce pain. No wonder they helped, because touch is a natural human reaction to pain or irritation. Just think about the last time you were affected by pain – what did you do? Rubbed the painful area, right? Touch gives you warmth, calms you down and brings a feeling of calmness and safety on a deep, subconscious level. Thus, different techniques of massage gradually appeared, depending on the intensity of touch. Some of them help in treating chronic diseases and traumas, others offer relief from stress and tension. In search of a professional consultation as for the massage techniques, Status turned to Anna Pawlowska, an experienced spa trainer, working at the Spa and Wellness centre of Amathus hotel in Limassol. She told us what is necessary to know when you apply for massage.

The philosophy of ancient Indian medicine is hidden beneath Ayurvedic massage. It brings a rejuvenation of life energy, restores the balance of the mind and body and helps to restore nighttime sleep patterns. Shirodhara brings relaxation to the mind and body; people enter a meditative state. Hot stone massage is a very old healing technique which has been used for millennia. It is especially popular in Cyprus during wintertime. Stone therapy uses lava stones which absorbed the four elements: Fire, Water, Earth and Air. The volcanic rocks deeply absorb warmth, releasing it slowly later on. The warmth penetrates into the body tissues as deeply as four centimeters. Thanks to the specific energy of the rocks lava stone therapy alleviates stress and strain, neutralising negative energy in the body. Those who prefer a more vigorous type of treatment, often go for deep tissue massage in spa centres in Cyprus. It is very effective in cases of connective tissue deformation in problem zones. Deep tissue massage is particularly appropriate for sportsmen who are engaged in hard physical activity on a regular basis, while it is also the best option for those who suffer from muscle pain or other related injuries.

You can feel the rejuvenation effect of massage even after the first treatment; the feeling of relaxation envelops your body, while your mind is restored with energy for new projects and undertakings. In some cases, however, it is important to have massage on a regular basis. In order to get rid of muscle pain and tension you need up to 10 regular treatments of therapeutic massage. Some discomfort may appear during the first sessions, depending on how neglected your body is, how tense your muscles are, and how many knots you have inside of your muscles. But gradually the pain will subside and massage will become a pleasant and enjoyable experience. The efficiency of massage depends entirely on you. It is highly recommended that you take a hot shower or visit a sauna before the massage, as this will warm up the muscles and increase your blood circulation. Another piece of advice – don’t eat too much before the massage, but afterwards drink a lot of herbal tea and herbal mixtures, which are usually offered in the spa salons, as liquid helps detoxification of the body.

4. Golf ball massage

Cosmetologists have come to the conclusion that these balls work wonders for those who need deep tissue massage, thanks to their uneven surface. 5. Creole massage
If you want to indulge yourself with exotic aroma of essential oils and ethnic rhythms, alongside getting unbelievable energy, you should go to the island of Mauritius. The highlight of local spa salons is the Creole massage. It is performed with two hollow bamboo sticks, half filled with grain, and is accompanied by rhythmic national Creole music. The therapist bumps the body up to 120 times per minute. It is a very effective way to fight cellulite and excess weight. Indeed, bamboo is a traditional symbol of gracefulness and longevity.
6. Elephant massage
Thai massage is not the only treatment of which Thailand can boast. Locally trained elephants have also mastered the art of massage and are happy to demonstrate it on the brave, with the help of their trunk and their feet. According to those who “survived” such massage, an elephant, weighting about three tons, can give a sense of deep relaxation and lightness to the body. Who would doubt it!
7. The fire massage
“Fire Dragon” therapy helps to burn excess weight, quite literally. Being a unique ancient technique from Tibet, it was later used by the Chinese massage therapists. The Asnières workshop is unquestionably the nerve centre of Louis Vuitton. For more than a century, from 1859 until 1977, it was the company’s sole production facility, before growing demand from new markets and for new products meant that additional workshops had to be brought on stream. Asnières remains, however, very much the living symbol of Louis Vuitton’s unique combination of tradition and innovation. It is at Asnières that all the company’s hard-frame luggage continues to be made, as well as special orders, exotic leather bags and limited-edition bags for the fashion shows. The Asnières workshop was itself a response to burgeoning demand when, just four years after the company was founded, the spectacular success of the Vuitton flat trunk forced Louis Vuitton to look beyond his original workshop in central Paris. With considerable foresight, he decided to move production out of the city to Asnières. The Asnières workshop reopened in January 2005 after extensive renovation lasting a year. Though their working environment has evolved beyond recognition, most of the tools and techniques used by the 185 craftsmen at Asnières remain virtually unchanged since the beginning. Another aspect of continuity is the time-honored practice by which the workshop’s master craftsmen train their apprentices in the skills they need, ensuring that Asnières’ proud tradition of creativity and craftsmanship is constantly renewed. 136 | S

In these days of modern travel, what does your suitcase say about you? Do you prefer a well-worn, but much loved vintage case, or a modern ultra-light case made from the newest technological advanced materials? With the advent of excess weight charges, many of us now opt for convince over classic style; but for travellers in earlier ages this was definitely not the case! The first domestic suitcases appeared with the advent of travel as a pleasurable pursuit in the 1800’s. At this time a lady would never travel without several members of staff, who would be placed in charge of her luggage. Without weight restrictions to consider, for a long journey such as a voyage on a steamship cruise, a lady would be accompanied by a huge variety of luggage such as: a campaign bag, a carpet bag, a coach bag, a dressing case the size of a wardrobe, several hatboxes and a couple of steamer trunks, as well as the humble suitcase. The journey of the suitcase mirrors the progression of travel as a source of entertainment and pleasure. The earliest cases were made from leather or cow hide stretched over a wooden frame. It was the French who radicalised the design of the suitcase in the 1850’s by changing its shape to a flat top, which meant that many trunks could be stacked on top of each other, thus needing less space and less staff to manage them. As time progressed in the 20th century the use of staff declined and the need for smaller and more personally manageable luggage arose; and so the modern, lightweight suitcase was born. The ad138 | S

vent of personal motor vehicles and aeroplane travel continued this trend towards durable and convenient suitcases. Naturally paintings and sculptures are far more often brought to different museums to be exhibited there, but sometimes they “migrate” from one private collection to another. By Anastasia Davydova If you are a connoisseur of art and are keen on bringing home not just a fridge magnet, but a painting which you have bought in a local gallery or antique shop, you should be prepared to face some problems. In order to take such a purchase out of the country, you have to prove that the canvas or sculpture is not of cultural significance and thus prohibited for export. If a piece of art is older than 50 years, it is considered to be antique in most countries. There are of course some exceptions to this rule. In Russia a balalaika or a button accordion are not antiques, even if they are more than 50 years old. But a viola or a double-bass are very hard to be exported, were they made more than half a century ago. 140 | S

Anna Chistoserdova, art director of an art gallery, says that a piece of art must be subjected to examination by the Ministry of Culture before being taken out of the country. Besides, state tax is to be paid before the procedure. In most cases experts examine the painting or sculpture, plus two photos of the given pieces, on which the author of the work, its size and technique are specified. The experts will give you a certificate, to show to customs officers. You may then get a temporary export permit (for an exhibition, etc.) or a permanent one. When it is necessary to transfer pieces of art from one museum or gallery to another, people often resort to the services of logistics companies. In such cases valuables are usually insured, and the insurance cost will depend on the value of the collection. Sometimes the insurance sum can be very high. In 2011, for example, Leonardo da Vinci masterpieces were exhibited in the National Gallery of London. The nine unique canvases were insured for more than 2.4 billion dollars!

Don’t send paintings in a wooden frame to Canada. It will be returned to you and you will have to pay the posting expenses. Or the frame maybe placed in quarantine, with the microbiological analyses of the wood being paid for out of your own pocket. Forget about bringing a “girl with an oar” figurine to Egypt, if the oar is the only thing covering her modesty. If you do insist on taking this into the country, you will not only face a fine but you will also have the opportunity to find out if staying in an Egyptian prison lives up to the horrible image we have seen in films. You had better not export antiques which are older than a century from Russia, even if they are personal belongings, like photographs. It is very unwise to export anything from Italy by yourself. As for England, you can import works by Charles Dickens, published during his life. You won’t have to pay any tax; but silver tableware is a different matter – fees are inevitable. If you dare bring paintings into South Africa, you will have to pay import duty and taxes which may be much higher than the real value of the painting. While importing art pieces made by modern painters or sculptors in France, you may be asked to present a document proving that you have paid a 5% tax which is used as an extra payment, added to the pension of the present day artists living in France. 142 | S

Providing documents which have been correctly written and signed can save you time, money and stress. It’s much easier to avoid awkward questions of customs officers, than to prove that you didn’t kill an elephant; or that you are not planning to corrupt the Egyptian people with the help of a harmless figurine. It’s wise to bear in mind that modern databases with information concerning works of art and their value are available at every customs office; so your feeble story that you bought this “trifle” at a flea market for next to nothing will not allow you to avoid paying customs duty in the country of your destination. He gives a radiant smile, when he greets you and immediately joins the conversation. Greek by origin, French by style and living in Russia, he previously resided in Greece for 17 years, having spent just as long in Paris, and for the last 15 years he has been living in Moscow. His life story seems intriguing, and so we decided to learn more about him. Moscow is not an easy place in which to live. The city moves to its own rhythm; it is full of vibrant energy and crazy speed. It may accept or reject you. Since you have lived here for 15 years and have made a successful career as a manager in a foreign country, – Moscow has accepted you! I can tune up to any rhythm; it is no challenge for me. I love big metropolitan cities, I feel at home there. Life is dynamic, nothing stands still, and something is happening all of the time. Besides, I came to Moscow in 1955, when I was 30. I was young, ambitious, and eager to learn. It was not only a matter of money. I wanted to develop my abilities, to go up the career ladder. Moscow was an ideal place for realising my aspirations.

Грек по происхождению, француз по стилю и русский по месту жительства, 17 лет он провел в Греции, столько же – в Париже, и вот уже 15 лет в Москве. Его биография говорит о многом, но нам захотелось узнать больше. Москва – непростой город, сильнейшая энергетика, бешеные скорости, кого-то принимает, кого-то нет. Судя по тому, что вы здесь уже почти 15 лет – успешный менеджер в чужой стране – вам удачно удалось вписаться в московский ритм. Я подстроюсь под любой ритм – это для меня не проблема, я люблю большие города, мегаполисы, мне в них комфортно. Жизнь кипит, все время что-то происходит, ничто не стоит на месте. А потом, я приехал в Москву в 30 лет, в 1995 году. Совсем молодой, хотелось много узнать, достичь, добиться. Это касается не только денег, нет, мне была очень важна самореализация, потенциал, и, конечно, карьерный рост. А Москва в то время давала невероятные возможности. S | 147

Не было ощущения «куда я попал»? Было! Первое время, конечно. Все новое – язык, культура, менталитет. А потом еще и грянул кризис в 1998. Но мне повезло, я приехал сюда в дружественную мне российскую компанию. Многие неудобства компенсировались интересной работой и поддержкой моих друзей Михаила Куснировича, его супруги Екатерины Моисеевой и коллег. И еще очень важный момент: я попал в Россию в то время, когда посты крупных менеджеров занимали молодые ребята-самоучки. Они много работали, быстро все впитывали, ловили на лету, а потом учили других, как работать методично и правильно. И я, по сути, оказался в числе этих менеджеров. Ставил систему и методику продаж.
Didn’t it feel strange? Sure, especially in the beginning. Everything was new: the language, mentality, culture. And then a crisis broke out. But I was lucky; I came to work in a friendly company. A lot of inconveniences and problems were compensated by the support of my friends: Mikhail Kusnirovich, his wife Catherine Moiseeva, and my colleagues. Another important factor is that I came to Russia at the time, when positions of top managers were held by young, self-educated people. They worked hard, gained experience and were quick to grasp new ideas. And then they taught others how to work properly. In fact I was one of those managers. I worked out the system and technique of sales.
So, I can say, that you went to Moscow with a certain mission – something like “I will teach the Russians how they should work and dress in style”. You see, all foreigners, who came to Russia with such an attitude, didn’t stay there for long. They had to close down their businesses and return home. You can’t be a businessman in a foreign country while not taking a different mentality into account. Russians are not ignorant; on the contrary, they are well educated people with a rich historical background and a great soul. We, Greeks, have a lot in common with Russians – we have common cultural roots; the Mediterranean people and the Slavs are very close to each other. The Greeks are emotional, the French – independent, the Spanish are vibrant…
And the Russians? The Russians are very inquisitive minded, and this particular trait turned them into sophisticated fashionistas. If compared to Europeans, the Russians spend much more time and money on shopping, clothes, services and travelling. In Europe these expenses take up about 15-20% of the income, while in Russia they amount to 50%. Russian men are no longer fat, with huge bellies and golden watches, – they are fit, and their watches are made of white gold. They look after themselves.
Working in Russia has taught you a lot, hasn’t it? What is the main conclusion, which you have drawn for yourself? The less you talk – the better. In the Mediterranean countries people love talking; they are very emotional and gesticulate a lot. But in business it is the strategy and the method that count, and emotions are a hindrance. Russia may discipline you to some extent. 148 | S
То есть вы приехали в Москву с некой миссией? Сейчас покажу русским, как правильно работать и как одеваться стильно. Все иностранцы, кто в свое время приехал в Россию именно с таким «взглядом», долго здесь не продержались, уволились или закрыли свой бизнес и вернулись домой. Невозможно работать в России и не учитывать менталитет страны. Здесь нужен правильный подход. Не нужно ничего навязывать, нужно общаться. Русские – не темные люди, они очень образованны, с богатой культурой и широкой душой. Нас, греков, с русскими роднят общие культурные корни: средиземноморский народ и славяне очень близки другу другу. Греки эмоциональны, французы независимы, итальянцы очень яркие…
А русские? Русские очень любознательны, и эта любознательность сделала из них осведомленных модников. По сравнению с европейцами, русские тратят куда больше времени и дохода на покупки, одежду, услуги, путешествия. Если в Европе это 15-20 процентов дохода, то в России – может, все 50. Русские мужчины уже не лысые и пузатые и с золотыми часами — они подтянутые, следят за собой, интересуются новыми тенденциями, и часы у них теперь из белого золота…
Работа на российском рынке многому вас научила? Какой главный принцип усвоили для себя? Меньше слов, больше дела. Жители Средиземноморья любят поболтать, они много жестикулируют, эмоциональны. Но в бизнесе прежде всего важна методика, стратегия, а эмоции отходят в сторону, они только мешают делу. Россия дисциплинирует в какой-то степени.

Does it refer to clothes as well? Does the work influence your style? Yes, naturally. I have to know all about fabrics, accessories, design. I need to keep an eye on the latest trends and tendencies. I keep doing it all of the time, since we must know what we are offering to our customers. In our business every small thing, each tiny detail is highly important. As for the style, it is a very subjective notion. It’s up to people to judge whether a person is elegant or not. Style can be much better assessed from afar. I stick to the sense of moderation. I don’t like to be too fashionable. When some pieces of clothes are out of place or look exorbitant, they are not stylish.
Have you ever faced the situation of having nothing to wear, but when you look into the wardrobe, it is so heavily packed with clothes, that it won’t close? I am neither a shopaholic, nor an icon of style or an it-girl, who would pack three suitcases, when going for holidays. I am more of a gourmet. Like those who prefer delicious food, I love elegant clothes, but everything depends on

Я не «шмоточник», не икона стиля, не it-girl, которые, собираясь на отдых, пакуют три чемодана с вещами и переодеваются несколько раз в день. В одежде я скорее похож на гурмана. Есть же люди, которые любят вкусно поесть. А я люблю стильно одеться, но все зависит от случая. Если бы я работал в банке, я был бы вынужден иметь синий костюм и не смог бы щеголять в офисе в футболке Bosco, джинсах и кедах, например. the occasion. If I had worked in a bank, I would have been forced to follow the dress code, a blue suit, for instance. I wouldn’t have been able to show off, wearing a Bosco T-shirt, jeans and trainers.
Is there anything in your office that reminds you of Greece? And what Greek things do you miss most of all? There is nothing Greek in my office except some symbols of the Olympiakos team, I support. I miss Greek cuisine most of all. It is really amazing, but there are no Greek restaurants here. There is a Cypriot one, but its owner is Russian.
Do you ever feel sorry for not living in your motherland? No, I don’t. This is my choice and my experience. My work and my family are here. Besides, I go to Greece quite often, to see my parents and my brother. The only thing I am really sorry about is not having been able to see everything my native place is rich in. Piraeus region, Moschato, is unbelievably beautiful, and I always think about the time I lived there with great warmth.
Finally, what would you wish to the readers of Status magazine? I wish that Cyprus would get out of the difficult situation it is currently in. Cyprus industry does exist and it is in great demand not only at the local market. Cyprus can offer more than just beaches. I wish Cypriots success. Entrepreneurs should pluck up courage and come to the island not only for holidays, but for business. As for Russia, it is a very interesting country, very rich and impassioned! [S] 150 | S

В Москве не хватает больше всего греческой кухни. Это удивительно, но здесь отсутствуют подобные рестораны, их нет вообще, есть только один кипрский ресторан, но и он создан русским.
Сожалеете ли временами, что не живете на малой Родине? Нет, это мой выбор, мой опыт. Здесь у меня работа, личная жизнь. А потом, я часто бываю в Греции, там живут мои родители и брат. И единственное, о чем жалею, что в свое время не успел объять всего, чем так богата моя малая родина. Пирейский район Мосхато – удивительно красивое место, и я с большой теплотой вспоминаю то замечательное время.
И напоследок. Что бы вы пожелали читателям журнала «Status»? Я желаю Кипру поскорее выйти из тяжелой ситуации, в которой он находится сейчас. Реакция на эти перформансы оказалась совершенно непредсказуемой, как и бывает с истинным искусством. Несколько лет спустя, когда скандалист обратился к иммиграционным властям с прошением о гражданстве, власти, ища стандартный повод для отказа, заглянули в архив налоговой инспекции и были так потрясены увиденным, что на месте выдали мсье Котлярову удостоверение французской личности. Конверты с почтовыми отправлениями Толстого вызывали оторопь у почтальонов. Причудливая вязь из собственных штемпелей, монет, картинок и фотографий, вклеенных и вверстанных в холст конверта, – все это придавало письму необыкновенную значимость, выходящую за рамки эпистолярного – и вообще вербального жанра. Хотелось забрать конверт в рамку и поместить на стене. Что я, собственно, и сделал. Наиболее ярким представителем пост-арта остался сам Толстый. Это искусство только-только стало утверждаться – в России, Японии, Франции и других странах прошли вернисажи Толстого, но тут сама бумажная почта, вытесненная электронной, приказала долго жить. Interracial marriage, like any other union, has its advantages and disadvantages. Olga Konovalova, a practicing psychologist, gave us some comments regarding this topic.

future of the children. Sometimes, one spouse may be living in a foreign country with the children, while the other remains living in the home country; this situation can cause distress for the entire family.

She is married to Jean Cupré, a French citizen, and now lives in Nord Pas de Calais, in the northern region of France. – My sister introduced me to my future husband. She had been married to a French man for three years and lived in France. Our romance developed very quickly and dynamically, and four months later we were married. I had been to France before and I cannot say that I dreamed of moving there. Naturally lots of things seemed weird to me, and some of them still amaze me. I found out that the French are very excited about food. In most cases their meals include an hors-d’oeuvre, a main course, cheese, vegetables and dessert. Eating frogs and foie-gras is a tradition. The French buy it for Christmas, although it is not an everyday food – it is far more often served for guests.
