What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic Violence: Domestic violence is a pattern of controlling behaviors carried out by one person in an intimate relationship to maintain power and control over their partner.

out, drinking, or using drugs.

Abusers have learned to abuse, using their power to get what they want. The abuse may be physical, sexual, emotional, economic and psychological.

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put his arms around you and whispered, ‘Come with Me.’ With tearful eyes we watched you slowly fade away, although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us... He only takes the best.

On behalf of the Guzman family, we would like to thank everyone for your kind words, ower arrangements, food, phone calls, texts, masses and your presence at the wake, rosary, mass and burial. All those gestures have helped ease the pain of the loss of our beloved Virginia. We would like to thank Starr County Memorial Hospital, DHR, Rio Grande Regional Hospital, Ray of Light Hospice and Sanchez Funeral Home for all you have done for her. It has not gone unnoticed and is truly and humbly appreciated. May God continue to bless each and every one of you.

Guzmán & Garza Family

Partners may be married or not married; heterosexual, gay or lesbian; living together, separated or dating. Violence takes many forms and can happen all the time or once in a while. Abuse is not an accident. It does not happen because someone was stressed

“Domestic violence is a pattern of controlling behaviors, some of which are criminal, that includes but is not limited to physical assaults, sexual assaults, emotional abuse, isolation, economic coercion, threats, stalking and intimidation. These

behaviors are used by the batterer in an effort to control the intimate partner. ” Battering is a choice; it is used by one person in an intimate partner relationship to maintain power and control over their partner.

Domestic violence crosses all ethnic, racial, age, national origin, sexual orientation, religious, and socioeconomic lines. Domestic violence can happen to anybody. Studies suggest that one-fifth to one-third of all women will be physically assaulted by a partner or ex-partner during their lifetime. In heterosexual relationships, 95 percent of all victims are female; and 95 percent of all perpetrators are male. In same-sex relationships, domestic violence happens with the same statistical frequency as in heterosexual relationships. Women living in poverty experience violence by their partners at higher rates partially because they have fewer options.

What parents can do to prevent bullying

Bullying affects children from all walks of life. Whether the student is on the receiving end of bullying or is the aggressor, parents and other adults will sometimes need to step in to provide assistance. Although there is no magic formula to preventing bullying, parents can do their part to put a stop to such behaviors.

·Parent authoritatively: According to developmental psychologist Diana Divecha, contributor to Greater Good magazine, an authoritative style of parenting offers high levels of warmth, love and closeness, while at the same time providing clear limits and high expectations. Children who are raised with this type of parenting often fare the best with better mental health and stronger relationship skills. Children who are parented harshly may be more likely to become bullies or be bullied themselves.

·Be knowledgeable and observant: Parents, teachers and administrators should keep their eyes peeled for bullying behaviors and reactions. Various

signs indicate bullying is taking place, and these include being introverted, commonly reporting illness, withdrawing from daily activities, or having trouble sleeping.

·Nurture a positive household climate: Parents and other family members can work together at home to create an organized and predictable environment. Parents should model the type of behavior they want their children to express.

·Teach children coping skills: Practice scenarios at home where a child learns how to ignore a bully or develop assertive strategies for coping with bullying. Share who children can go to for help, apart from you, such as teachers or administrators, if they’re worried about being bullied.

·Set technology boundaries: Bullying can take place on social media, and by monitoring online activity, parents may be able to head off potential bullying problems. Document online bullying so it can be addressed with administrators or law enforcement.

6 ways to kick bad breath to the curb

Halitosis, which is characterized primarily by bad breath, can be an embarrassing condition. For some people, it is an occasional occurrence after eating a particular food. But for others, bad breath can be a persistent problem.

Getting to the root of bad breath can help people have a fresher mouth and avoid feelings of embarrassment. According to the Cleveland Clinic, halitosis affects one in four people across the globe. It may occur due to poor oral hygiene, but it also may be linked to dry mouth, heartburn, diseases elsewhere in the body, or eating foods like garlic and onions.

While some cases of bad breath may require specialized treatment, these six strategies may help people with more mild cases of

the condition.

1. Get routine dental cleanings at the dentist’s office. Brushing and flossing alone may not be enough to clear bacteria or properly clean plaque and tartar from teeth.

2. Saliva helps to wash out the mouth, and if the body isn’t making enough, it can lead to bad breath. Rewetting mouthwashes and drops may help.

3. Quit smoking, which can cause dry mouth and increase risk for gum disease.

4. Avoid certain foods, notably garlic and onions, and spices that may contribute to halitosis. After such foods are digested, they enter the bloodstream and are carried to the lungs, ultimately affecting breath, says the Mayo Clinic. Consuming these foods

in moderation may alleviate bad breath.

5. See a dentist if you suspect you have an infection. Infections in the mouth may lead to bad breath. These can occur from tooth decay, gum disease, mouth sores, or even surgical wounds. Getting infections under control will have a positive impact on breath.

6. Use decongestants and saline rinses when necessary. Upper respiratory conditions like allergies and colds could lead to post-nasal drip or infections in the throat that can contribute to bad breath.

Bad breath affects people for a variety of reasons. But it is typically preventable and treatable. Speak with a doctor if bad breath does not clear up with at-home remedies.

Establishing an online presence is one of the more effective ways to reach new customers and offer better customer service.

Eighty-one percent of consumers research a company before visiting it to make a purchase or engage in a service, says Blue Corona, a marketing solutions company. Ninety-seven percent of consumers go online to find local businesses or local services during their research. Lack of a website or social media presence could greatly hinder small businesses as they seek to grow. Although the numbers of small businesses with a website have grown, today roughly 70 percent have an online presence, says Zippia.

It is estimated that, 95 percent of all purchases will be facilitated by e-commerce by 2040, so it is important for small businesses to recognize the significance of enabling customers to buy online.

It was an eye-opening experience for the young minds as they learned about the dedication and commitment these brave heroes exhibit daily. Students witnessed some cool gear demonstrations and asked questions about being a firefighter.
