Rio Grande City listed in Top 8 Small Towns to Retire in Texas

Rio Grande City was recently designed by worldatlas.com as one of the top 8 small towns in Texas to retire and we couldn’t agree more. Rio Grande City is the ideal retirement destination with no state income tax, housing that is 26% lower than the national average, and an abundance of modern conveniences found in any major metropolitan area.

“I am delighted to share the exciting news that Rio Grande City has been recognized as one of the top 8 small towns to retire in Texas,” said Mayor Joel Villarreal. “This recognition reaffirms our ongoing efforts to create a city that caters to the diverse needs and interests of our residents and visitors. Thank you to World Atlas for shining a spotlight on Rio Grande City. Let’s celebrate this recognition and look forward to a bright future filled with opportunities and joy for retirees in nuestro lindo Rio Grande.”

Residents and visitors can find a variety of dining experiences and indulge in the abundance of local flavors. Shopping opportunities range from multiple shopping plazas, major franchise chains, a ten-screen movie theatre, and downtown high-end boutiques. For couples looking for a nostalgic getaway, Rio Grande City is the perfect place with its Victorian ambiance, intimate dining, quiet courtyards, and live music at several distinct locations.

Retirees can flock to Rio Grande City’s Chachalaca Wildlife Refuge and Fordyce Nature Trails to see a variety

of bird and butterfly species gather along the Rio Grande River. For those seeking more adventurous activities, you can take advantage of the meandering trails for hiking and biking. And at a hop, skip and a jump away, you can find the World Birding Center on scenic bluffs above the river in Roma, Texas. If fishing is your angle, you can try your luck with largemouth bass and channel catfish at one of the best freshwater fishing lakes in South Texas. Explore, fish and bird watch along the trails and lakeshore at Falcon State Park. RIO GRANDE CITY, page 9

Memories

1st Anniversary Mass In Loving Memory of Silvano Saenz Jr.

We thought of you with love today but that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday and days before that too. We think of you, in silence we often speak your name, all we have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake with which we’ll never part. God has you in his keeping, we have you in our heart. No farewell words were spoken no time to say goodbye, you were gone before we knew it and only God knows why. If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever. God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen

Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at 10:00AM at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, La Casita, Tx.

Loving you always, your wife San Juana, Children: Silvano III, Hector, Belinda, Grandchildren and Saenz Family

Sunburns and Skin Cancer

Individuals are urged to guard against sunburns and skin cancer by applying a sunscreen. But what does SPF and the various numbers associated with it mean?

SPF refers to sun protection factor. The SPF rating, according to Verywell Health, refers to how long a person can stay in the sun without getting burned while wearing the sunscreen compared to how long he or she could stay

in the sun before burning without wearing sunscreen.

For example, if you normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun and you apply an SPF 15 product, it will take 15 times longer to burn in the sun, or 150 minutes (2.5 hours).

Wearing a higher SPF product doesn’t protect you better, it does protect you for longer durations.

Therefore, you could conceivably

wear an SPF 5 and with frequent reapplication, get the same level of protection as wearing SPF 45. Higher number SPF products may be preferable since people can easily get distracted or forget to apply sunscreen regularly while outdoors.

But experts recommend reapplication of sunscreen every two hours, regardless of the SPF number on your sunscreen bottle.
