Ladies of First Baptist Church Donate “Trauma” Bears

Police officers and other first responders often encounter children during some of the worst days of their lives. Accidents, domestic violence, child abuse, neglect, medical emergencies, among other things, can cause deep emotional suffering for everybody involved. For young children during times of crisis, having something tangible to hold like a teddy bear will not only have a physically and emotionally calming effect, but can often be used to distract children from potentially traumatic situations.

In an effort to help provide a feeling of love, safety, and comfort to the smallest members of their community, the First Baptist Ladies’ Group of Rio

Grulla Gator Band Newly Created Booster Club Elect Officers

Grande City packaged and donated over 90 Teddy Bears to local representatives of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Game Wardens, Starr County Sheriff’s Department, and Rio Grande City Police Department to carry in their patrol vehicles to help comfort the hurting children they will no doubt encounter.

The group hopes the success of this inaugural event will gain momentum and allow them to expand donations to other first responders across the area. For more information or ways you can help support the effort, please contact the First Baptist Church of Rio Grande City on Facebook Messenger.

On September 6th, the Grulla Gator Band held its meeting to elect officers to the newly created booster club and is pleased to announce the 2023-2024 Grulla Gator Band Booster Club Officers: Margarita Frausto, President; Mayra Cabello, Vice President; Zulema Garcia, Secretary; Mariana Flores, Treasurer; Perla Bazan, Reporter and Mari Lupita Romero, Parliamentarian.

The Rio Grande City Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) - the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week (FPW) for more than 100 years - to promote this year’s FPW campaign, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention.” The campaign works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take when cooking to keep themselves and those around them safe.

According to NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths.

“Year after year, cooking remains the leading cause of home fires by far, accounting for half (49 percent) of all U.S. home fires,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of outreach and advocacy at NFPA. “These numbers tell us that there is still much work to do when it comes to better educating the public about ways to stay safe when cooking.”

The Rio Grande City Fire Department encourages all residents to embrace the 2023 Fire Prevention Week theme, “Cooking safety start with YOU,” said Manuel Muniz, Fire Chief. “A cooking fire can grow quickly. I have seen many homes damaged and people injured by fires that could easily have been prevented.”

Rio Grande City Fire Department offers these key safety tips to help reduce the risk of a cooking fire.

1. Watch what you heat

Always keep a close eye on what you are cooking. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

2. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.

3. Have a “kid- and pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet (1 meter) around the stove or grill and anywhere else hot food or drink

is prepared or carried.

The Rio Grande City Fire Department is hosting a series of events in support of this year’s FPW campaign, including Fire Prevention Week education at Rio Grande City Elementary Schools, October 8-14, 2023.

To find out more about FPW programs and activities in Rio

Grande City, please contact the Rio Grande City Fire Department at 956-487-5312. For more general information about Fire Prevention Week and cooking safety, visit www.fpw. org. For fire safety fun for kids, visit sparky.org

How to get home insurance discounts

Do you want to lower your home insurance costs?

Make sure you’re getting all your discounts. Ask your insurance agent or company about possible discounts such as a:

•Safe home discount, especially if you have a security alarm.

•Smoke alarm or sprinkler discount.

•New home discount. If your home was built or renovated in the last five years, your insurance company might reduce your premium.

•Roof discount. Companies often offer discounts for roofs made of materials that help prevent damage or resist fire. Homes with newer roofs may get a roof age discount.

You also might get a discount

for having multiple policies with the same company. Also, shopping different companies could pay off. Get sample rates at the Texas Department of Insurance’s HelpInsure.com. Have a question about insurance? Call the Texas Department of Insurance at 800252-3439 or visit www.tdi.texas. gov.
