Governor Abbott Extends Virtual Education Options For Texas Students

On June 12, 2023, Governor Greg Abbott directed Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner Mike Morath to waive specific requirements for school districts or open-enrollment charter schools to be able to continue offering virtual instruction options for students in

grades 3 through 12 through the Texas Virtual School Network (TXVSN) for the next two school years. “Texas wants to see all of our children succeed and receive the best education possible,” said Governor Abbott. “Many parents across our state have found that the best fit for their child’s education is through virtual instruction. Today, I am directing TEA to ensure thousands of Texas students enrolled in virtual school programs can continue to receive the education that best fits their needs until a more permanent solution is adopted during the next regular legislative session in 2025.”

Under current state law, Texas schools may offer virtual instruction through a patchwork of several different statutes. One statute authorizes schools to receive full-time funding for students enrolled in local, virtual learning programs through TXVSN.

At Governor Abbott’s direction, TEA’s waiver authority will allow school systems providing full-time virtual instruction to receive full funding for each student in grades 3 through 12 who successfully complete the school year. TEA will provide communication this week to school districts around the state who have provided virtual instruction under other statutes to continue their virtual instruction under the authority of the TXVSN.

DHR Health To Host the Purple Project 5K: A Uniting Run for All Cancers in Celebration of “National Cancer Survivors Month”

DHR Health is thrilled to announce the Purple Project 5K: A Uniting Run for All Cancers event, scheduled to take place at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 25, at the scenic Edinburg Municipal Park located at 714 S. Raul Longoria Road.

This highly anticipated event aims to raise cancer awareness and support while aligning with the significance of June as “National Cancer Survivors Month.” DHR Health invites cancer survivors, caretakers, family members, and friends to participate in this empowering event that unites individuals from all walks of life, honoring survivors, remembering those who have battled cancer, and demonstrating unwavering support for those currently fighting the disease. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Renaissance Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization of DHR Health, dedicated to assisting underserved cancer patients

with various financial needs and assistance.

“This event will provide a platform for cancer survivors, patients, families, and the community to come together and share their stories, experiences, and hope. Plus, it’s all for a wonderful cause as the monies we raise go back to help cancer patients from throughout the Rio Grande Valley,” said Evelyn Saenz, Executive Director of the Renaissance Cancer Foundation.

Registration is now open.

To register, simply visit the event’s official website at www. dhrhealth.com/purpleproject5K.

The registration fee is $15 for cancer survivors and $25 for runners/walkers. Additionally, the first 300 registered participants to cross the 5K finish line will receive a commemorative medal.

“The atmosphere will be filled with encouragement, compassion, and the shared goal of raising cancer awareness and

support,” said Clara Chapa, DHR Health Advance Care Center Community Outreach Coordinator.

According to the National Cancer Institute, an individual is considered a cancer survivor from the time of diagnosis through the balance of his or her life.

Each survivorship experience is unique, as survivors may face various challenges during and after treatments.

“I am grateful for a second chance at life and for the opportunity to celebrate hope and improved health at the Purple Project 5K,” said Lydia Molina, a cancer survivor, who plans to bring her family to the event. For more information about the Purple Project 5K or to make a donation, please contact Evelyn Saenz, Executive Director of the Renaissance Cancer Foundation, at 956-362-2114 or via email at ev.saenz@dhr-rgv.com.

More Than a Half Million Texan Children At Risk of Losing Health Insurance

Texas Medicaid is in the process of re-checking Medicaid eligibility for millions of Texans. The state started with people most likely to be ineligible (i.e. adults) but are moving on to the next cohort this summer, which includes many children.

Experts estimate that 3 in 4 children who lose Medicaid in the process will still be eligible for Medicaid. This is because families are rusty at completing their paperwork, and many have moved during the pandemic, so the state will not know where to reach them.
