Roma ISD Breaks Ground on New Marching Band Practice Pad

Congratulations to the Roma ISD Mighty Gladiator Band Program on the groundbreaking ceremony for their new Marching Band Practice Pad! The practice pad will provide the students a replica of the Gladiator Arena

Field Turf on which they can practice their marching routines. This means they will no longer have to practice on the hot parking lot asphalt. The practice pad comes with lights and electricity, as well as a new direction platform.

“We are thrilled with this new practice pad, which will really solve many issues for our program,” said Director Dena Laurel. “We can’t wait to get ready for state marching band competition on the pad, which is

right across from the Band Hall. It will be more convenient and much safer for the students in many ways. We want to thank the Roma ISD School Board and Superintendent Carlos M. Gonzalez for moving forward with

this project, which will benefit generations of future Gladiators. This is certainly excellence in action at Roma ISD.” The Band Practice Pad is funded through Roma ISD’s General Fund monies.

Alexis Gallegos and Robert Bazan from Congressman Henry Cuellar’s Starr County office visited La Casita, La Grulla, and Rio Grande City to hear from the constituents and help with their concerns. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to stop by. Once a month, Congressman Cuellar’s staff will visit the community to offer assistance. For more information, please visit the Congressman Cuellar website or call the Rio Grande City district office at (956) 487-5603.

Youth Nature Photography Contest Sparks Creativity

Enter the FREE Photography Contest for Kids by August 1st and attend the FREE Awards Ceremony on August 17th at Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen. This summer, spark your child’s creativity and have them explore nature with the camera and/or smart phone. Quinta Mazatlan and The Valley Land Fund are hosting the annual nature photography contest for kids, Southern Exposures. The free contest offers prizes for every child that enters, including a photo feature in the Award Winning Exhibit plus a chance to win cash prizes.

Photographs should have a nature or wildlife theme and must be taken in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. “Observing and photographing nature is an enriching hobby that helps your

child learn in nature,” states Colleen Hook, Director of Quinta Mazatlan.

The contest is open to anyone ages 5 to 18 and contestants can enter up to six images by August 1st online (valleylandfund. com). One of their images will be chosen for the exhibit, to showcase their talent, at the Awards Ceremony on August 17th at Quinta Mazatlan.

All youth contestants will receive a free t-shirt, goody-bag and recognition in the exhibit thanks to the generous support of The Valley Land Fund, Quinta Mazatlan-City of McAllen, H-E-B, Magic Valley Electric Cooperative, and AEP Texas.

Parents, grandparents and friends can help foster a child’s love of nature and photography by taking them outdoors this summer

in the backyard, neighborhood and/or visit a nature center.

“There is an amazing network of distinctly different nature and birding centers along the 120mile historic river corridor in the Valley,” states Colleen Hook. Provide your kids new outings to photograph nature and help them find out the name of the plant, animal, body of water, or other to make it even more educational.

For additional support, Quinta Mazatlan is offering photography classes for kids on Saturday mornings. For more information, follow Quinta Mazatlan on social media, call 956-6813370 and visit online at the valleyland fund.com.

Eight tips to keep cool and comfortable during a Texas heat wave

Intense heat waves have Texans bracing for power grid instability. Regulators are predicting recordbreaking demand for electricity, and Texas residents were asked to cut back on power usage. It’s a scorching start to a long summer season - and a crucial time to prepare for potential outages caused by heat waves.

“To support your coverage of the current Texas heat wave, I can offer expert tips from a power outage response expert at global energy technology company Generac,” said Josh Anderson, on behalf of Generac Power Systems. A few key tips can help Texans navigate power outages in the heat, including:

– Wear light clothing and stay in the shade as much as possible.

– Drink plenty of fluids, and know the signs of heat cramps,

heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

– If you have a portable generator, fill gas cans to keep it running. Watch out for low oil levels if your generator is running continuously. Remember to check the oil level each day and keep extra oil on hand.

– Only use portable generators outdoors and away from windows, doors and vents. Keep at least 3 feet of clearance around the generator.

– If you’re relying on a standby generator when the power goes out, make sure it’s ready ahead of time. Clear debris and any obstructions away from the generator. Check your battery and air filter.

– Turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and keep them closed as much as possible.

Su generador portátil puede mantener a su familia a salvo

– Unplug small appliances in the rooms you do not plan to use.

– Charge cell phones and save your cell phone battery as much as possible. Equipped with expert recommendations on resilience amidst a power outage, Texans can face the hot summer ahead with confidence rather than concern.

Anything that takes a driver’s attention away from the road is considered a distraction. That includes adjusting the radio station, looking ahead at the route on a navigation system, reaching into the fast-food bag for a French fry, and answering a phone or responding to a text.

Distractions can be visual (taking eyes off the road), manual (taking hands off the wheel), and cognitive (taking your mind off driving). Whether it is good for people or not, multitasking is now commonplace. That means individuals are juggling two or more different tasks at one time,

Did you know?

even while driving. This propensity to try to fit more into a day may seem like it is improving efficiency, but certain studies show that multitasking often means the focus and attention to detail supplied to tasks isn’t as great when doing two things at once as opposed to focusing on one task at a time. In terms of driving while distracted by something else, the consequences can be great. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says about 3,000 Americans die in crashes involving a distracted driver every year. Younger drivers, or those

between the ages of 15 and 20, are more likely to become distracted drivers than other age groups.

The Canadian Automobile Association says drivers who drive distracted are eight times more likely to be in a crash or near-crash event compared with non-distracted drivers. Transport Canada’s National Collision Database indicates distracted driving contributes to an estimated 21 percent of fatal collisions each year and around 27 percent of serious injury collisions.

There is still work to be done to encourage drivers to be more attentive behind the wheel.
