How many active parks and places do you think there are in Rio Grande City? Did you know there are at least 17? Did you know the city of Roma has at least three? Parks, schools, plazas and paths can provide most

people with a place to be active and spend time with family and friends.

Many people do not know about all the parks in their communities—even in smaller communities. According to Jamie

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension associate professor and urban and municipal park specialist, research says lack of knowledge is one of the barriers people report for why they don’t visit their local parks and active places.

Roma, Rio Grande City, and the city of Eagle Pass are working with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s Working on Wellness Environments (WOW-E) program to tie into the CDC’s Active People Healthy Nation (APHN) campaign. This campaign aims to get 27 million more Americans physically active by 2027. The goal of these local efforts is to make residents “in

the know” about parks and active places so more can visit and use them to be active, socialize, and enjoy time outdoors.

The campaign is in full swing; here’s what community members have said about it:

“[The billboard] is going to make people think, ‘I want to go find [the parks!]”

“It’s a great source of information and inspiration because people will want to go and find [the parks] and use them.”

Alcohol is among the most used drugs, plays a large role in many societies and cultures around the

world, and greatly impacts public health.

More people over age 12 in the United States have used alcohol in the past year than any other drug or tobacco product, and alcohol use disorder is the most common type of substance use

disorder in the United States.

Rates of underage drinking in the United States are high. Underage drinking can have severe consequences for children under 21, including the following: injury or death from accidents; poor school performance; and/ or poor judgement and decision-

making.

Parents / guardians have a significant influence in their children’s decision to experiment with alcohol and other drugs. It is important to start having ageappropriate conversations with children about peer pressure and alcohol use as early as elementary

school age and to continue these conversations throughout their development.

Although it may not seem like it, when parents / guardians talk about underage drinking, and substance use, their children do hear them.

Did you know?

High cholesterol levels are often associated with adulthood. However, children also may experience high cholesterol, which can affect their longterm health. Pediatric high cholesterol, like its adult counterpart, refers to high levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), also known as “bad” cholesterol.

Elevated LDL can lead to fatty deposits that cause hardening of the arteries. Complications such as heart attack, stroke and early severe diseases are possible, according to Children’s Health.

John’s Hopkins All Children’s

Hospital warns that heart disease has its roots in childhood.

Therefore, it is important to be aware of children’s cholesterol levels, as high levels can increase kids’ chances of heart disease and stroke as adults. Childhood obesity, eating a diet high in trans fat and saturated fat, and having a parent or close family member with high cholesterol are risk factors for children.

A pediatrician can be consulted and a lipid profile prescribed to check cholesterol levels.

Lipid profiles are recommended between ages nine and 11, and again between ages 17 and 21.
