recalled, between harvesting seasons, he went to school and was proud to have been the first in his family to graduate from Roma High School. At all other times, he would hang out with his brothers and friends dusting up the countryside in the family’s 1953 Chevy pickup nicknamed, “La Aguacata.” On September 2, 1966, in true fairytale love story fashion, he married his high school sweetheart, the late Bertha Sandoval Gonzalez, and they lived happily together for fiftyone years until she passed away on October 27, 2017.

Adrian Gonzalez

May 27, 1940 † August 28, 2023

Adrian Gonzalez departed peacefully, at the age of 83, on August 28, 2023 in Kingwood, Texas. He now joins his beloved wife who preceded him to the afterlife.

Adrian was born on May 27, 1940, to Julian Gonzalez and Dolores Canales in Salineno, Texas. From humble beginnings, at a very young age and throughout his teenage years, he worked in farm labor alongside his parents and siblings to put food on the table. Despite the family’s trials and tribulations growing up, the memories of which he nonetheless fondly

Throughout his working years, Adrian was dedicated to public service. From 1962-1966, he served his country honorably in the United States Air Force as an Air Policeman. In 1994, he was elected as Starr County Commissioner for Precinct 2 and served his community for four years. Before and after his service as County Commissioner, Adrian worked in supportive managerial roles for the Roma Independent School District retiring at the age of 65 after many years of dedicated service.

Both Adrian and his late wife, Bertha, loved conjunto music and dancing cheek to cheek, never

missing a conjunto music festival or a favorite band’s performance, and we are confident they are finally dancing cumbias and boleros together again in heaven.

Adrian was personable, charismatic, and unfiltered, always in a joyful mood with a great ability to make others smile, cracking jokes for any occasion and in any company, and his glee and sense of humor will truly be missed.

Apart from his beloved wife, he is preceded by his aforementioned parents and his siblings, Manuela Luera, Cecilia Garcia, Pedro Gonzalez, Sylvia Longoria, Delma Gonzalez, Eva Ramos, and Julian Gonzalez Jr., whom he always cherished and missed dearly.

Adrian is survived by his children, Adrian Gonzalez, Jr. and wife, Rosario, Mario Gonzalez and wife, Mutsumi, and Lorena Ramos and husband, Ruben, his five grandchildren, Lei Gonzalez, Adriana Yadira Pena and husband, Jose, Leina Mabelle Gonzalez, Rudy Ramos, and Adrian Yamil Gonzalez, and his sole remaining sibling, Eloy Gonzalez, to whom he passed the mantle as the new patriarch of the Gonzalez family.

Abandoned Water Wells Are A Danger To Animals And Humans – And Texas Could Have Thousands Of Them

A recent incident in Bastrop County where three people died when they tried to rescue a dog that had fallen into an abandoned cistern highlights the dangers of abandoned or deteriorated water wells in Texas. Cisterns, which are not regulated in Texas, have solid bottoms and sealed sides so they can store water. Although cisterns are not wells, this tragedy shows how belowground water storage tanks can be just as dangerous as abandoned or deteriorated wells.

The three people were reported to be hog hunters who entered a cistern in a cornfield, trying to rescue a hunting dog that had apparently fallen into the uncovered cistern. The people were all overcome by toxic fumes that had built up in the cistern, according to law enforcement officials in Bastrop County.

There may be thousands of abandoned or deteriorated water wells in Texas posing safety hazards and contributing to groundwater pollution.

Anyone who is aware of abandoned or deteriorated wells is urged to report them to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) at https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/abwells/ default.aspx. When filing the report, please include an address or GPS coordinates, as well as any photos or video of the well, if possible.

Abandoned or deteriorated water wells can contaminate groundwater by providing a direct conduit for chemicals and other surface contaminants, such as animal waste and pesticides, to directly enter

aquifers. Uncapped wells also present a physical danger to humans and animals who can be severely injured or killed when they fall partially or completely into the well.

Landowners who are not sure if there are abandoned water wells on their property should look for plastic, steel, brick or concrete casing (pipe) that may extend above ground, or for a hole in the ground with no apparent bottom.

Some abandoned wells have concrete or brick casing extending above ground or a windmill with missing blades. Abandoned or deteriorated well casings or pipes may be cut off at ground level, posing an additional threat.

Wells are “abandoned” when they are not in use, as defined by Texas Occupations Code, Section 1901.255.

A “deteriorated” well is a well that is causing or likely to cause pollution of any water in the state, including groundwater.

Under Section 1901.255 of the Occupations Code, abandoned or deteriorated wells must be plugged or brought into compliance within 180 days of a landowner learning that they have an abandoned or deteriorated well on their property.

Landowners are responsible for abandoned or deteriorated water wells on their property. If a well needs to be plugged, they may plug the well themselves (in compliance with Title 16, Texas Administrative

Code, Section (76.104 Capping and Plugging Wells Standards) or hire a well driller or pump installer licensed by TDLR to plug the well or bring the well into compliance.

If a landowner chooses to plug the well themselves, they are required to plug the well in accordance with TDLR’s well plugging specifications ( https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/wwd/ wwdspecs.htm) and submit a State of Texas Plugging Report to TDLR within 30 days from the date the well was plugged.

To avoid problems in the future, landowners should install a locking well cap or sanitary well seal –not just a cover over the well – to prevent unauthorized use or entry into the well. Septic systems should be pumped and inspected as often as recommended by the local health department. Care should be taken when mowing or working near the well.

Strategies that can improve reading comprehension

Strong reading comprehension skills are one of the foundations of a successful academic career.

According to the Institute of Reading Development, students with strong reading comprehension skills get a big boost in all subjects, including math and science.

Though the benefits of reading comprehension are well documented, many students are struggling in this area of their academics. Officials with the National Center for Education Statistics note that, over the last decade, students have made no progress in reading performance.

That likely comes as no surprise to seasoned educators, as data indicates students are reading less outside of school than they have in years past. Data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress indicates the percentage of public school students who said they read 30 minutes or more a day declined by 4 percent between 2017 and 2019, dipping below 50 percent overall in the latter year.

There’s likely a multitude of reasons why students now read less than they used to. Parents concerned about their children’s reading comprehension can try these strategies to bolster this highly valuable skill.

· Let kids read what they like.

The tutoring professionals at Oxford Learning® report that 73 percent of students indicate they would read more if they found books they liked. Parents can address this issue by taking children to their local libraries and letting them choose which books to check out. The more

practice kids get with reading, the more their comprehension skills develop.

· Read aloud to children. Various studies have found that reading aloud to children significantly benefits literacy development. One study from the National Association for the Education of Young Children found that listening to others read helps children develop key understanding and skills, including how stories are written.

In addition, the Reading Rockets project, which aspires to bring reading research to life in the hopes of helping young children develop into strong, confident readers, notes that children can listen on a higher language level than they can read. That makes complex ideas more accessible.

· Ask questions when reading to children. When reading to children, parents can compound the benefits of this activity by asking youngsters questions about the book. Asking what, when, where, why, and how can encourage children to look for answers to these questions while they’re being read to. As students advance and then read more on their own, parents can encourage them to ask these questions of themselves (if they’re not already doing so on their own). Asking and answering these questions is a great way to strengthen reading comprehension skills.

Strong reading comprehension skills can help students reach their academic potential. Parents can employ various strategies to help children bolster those skills.
