February 16, 2020 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary Truthfully, most of us aren’t cruel, at least not like a movie villain. However, we can offer a weak form of interaction with others, never engaging our heart and only trying to “check a box” to make sure we meet expectations. We can only truly be kind when we first see the worth of those around us. As Jesus describes it, we serve Christ by loving and serving others.

PRELUDE | Jubilate Deo Alfred Silver, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist OPENING PRAYER | From Proverbs 16:7 We have come for a glimpse of your kingdom of kindness, a world where love rules over all, a world where enemies embrace, a world where the distinctions between friend and foe evaporate in the light of your love. We now silently pray for our friends... And we now silently pray for those with whom we are at odds... Knowing you have the power to transform us, we give our lives over to you, body, soul, mind, spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen. *OPENING HYMN | How Can We Name a Love 111 | Terra Beata | Verses 1-4 How can we name a Love that wakens heart and mind, indwelling all we know or think or do or seek or find? Within our daily world, in every human face, Love’s echoes sound and God is found, hid in the commonplace. If we awoke to life built on a rock of care that asked no great reward but firm, assured, was simply there, we can, with parents’ names, describe, and thus adore, Love unconfined, a father kind, a mother strong and sure. When people share a task, and strength and skills unite in projects old or new, to make or do with shared delight, our Friend and Partner’s will is better understood, that all should share, create, and care, and know that life is good. So in a hundred names, each day we all can meet a presence, sensed and shown at work, at home, or in the street. Yet every name we see, shines in a brighter sun: In Christ alone is Love full grown and life and hope begun. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand *Please rise in body or spirit. 2

of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. CHILDREN’S MOMENT WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS MIDDLE HYMN | Jesu, Jesu 432 | CHEREPONI | Verses 1-3 Refrain: Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love, show us how to serve the neighbors we have from you. Kneels at the feet of his friends, silently washes their feet, Master who acts as a slave to them. (Refrain) Neighbors are rich and poor, neighbors are black and white, neighbors are near and far away. (Refrain) These are the ones we should serve, these are the ones we should love; all these are neighbors to us and you. (Refrain)

OFFERTORY | Fairest Lord Jesus Derek Hakes, composer | Chancel Choir Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature, O thou of God and man the Son, Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor, thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown. Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands, robed in the blooming garb of spring: Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer who makes the woeful heart to sing. Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight, and all the twinkling starry host: Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer than all the angels heaven can boast. +In this instance, catholic means universal.

*CLOSING HYMN | Blest Be the Tie That Binds 557 | Dennis | Verses 1-4 Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. Before our Father’s throne we pour our ardent prayers; our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares. We share each other’s woes, our mutual burdens bear; and often for each other flows the sympathizing tear. When we asunder part, it gives us inward pain; but we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again. *BENEDICTION I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside by thee. Exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, Let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. POSTLUDE | Sortie Christopher Tambling, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist New this last fall, Bell Blast is a mini-camp for 3rd through 5th graders. The idea behind the event is to give kids a project driven, bite size experience. In just 90 minutes, kids learn to ring bells, delve more deeply into music theory, care for the instruments, rely on each other in their music making, and, most importantly, contribute to worship. We are grateful to Lynn Hayes for bringing this vision to life! 4
