February 23, 2020 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary The issue of humility is difficult because we think we are greater than we are, at the expense of recognizing the greatness of God, or we think we are lesser than we are, at the expense of recognizing the person God made. Jesus, having all the power of God, did not exploit that to become greater on this earth, instead becoming a servant. Conversely, Isaiah initially tried to evade the call of God.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Processional March in A Major Alexandre Guilmant,, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *CALL TO WORSHIP I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory! The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens! Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? *OPENING HYMN | Holy, Holy, Holy 64 | Nicea | Verses 1-4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *Please rise in body or spirit. 2

+In this instance, catholic means universal.

*DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. CHILDREN’S MOMENT WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

*SENDING FORTH God asks us, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Here am I; send me! God asks us, “Who will visit those who are in prison and advocate for a justice system that is fair and restorative?” Here am I; send me! God asks us, “Who will welcome the stranger and recognize as family all who call on God?” Here am I; send me! God asks us, “Who will heal the wounds of slavery, break the bonds of prejudice and oppression?” Here am I; send me! God asks us, “Who will care for the earth and model a lifestyle rooted in stewardship, that shares and protects the goodness of creation?” Here am I; send me! Lead us, Spirit of God! 3

*CLOSING HYMN | Here I Am, Lord 593 | Here I Am | Verses 1-3 I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin, my hand will save. I, who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Who shall I send? Refrain: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord. If you lead me. I will hold, your people in my heart. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain. I have wept for love of them, they turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send? (Refrain) I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame, I will set a feast for them. My hand will save. Finest bread I will provide, till their hearts be satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? (Refrain) *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Paean Oliphant Chuckerbutty, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist
